- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories of the day.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Patz.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Not so fast, my friends.
- 0:18Speaker 2: All right, welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff.
- 0:20Speaker 2: He's Paul Paps. Paul, we made it two nights without football.
- 0:24Speaker 2: We're back, baby.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Yeah, no matching yet. Not till October. But tonight, you
- 0:28Speaker 3: got much more football. You got some college. You got
- 0:29Speaker 3: some pro. You got Syracuse Pit. We'll take a little
- 0:32Speaker 3: sprinkle of that.
- 0:32Speaker 2: I don't know if that makes my TV with a
- 0:35Speaker 2: new stadium in Buffalo. Not to mention a great game.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Bills and Lions. We'll get into that in a second. First,
- 0:40Speaker 2: if you watch the DP show. LSU Ole Miss, shenanigans
- 0:44Speaker 2: of football.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Yeah, alleged shenanigans with LSU Ole Miss. The backstory is
- 0:48Speaker 3: one of the prime games of the year in college football,
- 0:51Speaker 3: and LSU suddenly, on their injury report, Sam Leavitt, the quarterback,
- 0:56Speaker 3: is on it. Not even details of how he got
- 0:57Speaker 3: on it, where he got on it, but Wednesday night,
- 1:00Speaker 3: they listed Sam Leavitt as doubtful. Now, instantly, everyone thought, well,
- 1:04Speaker 3: this is clearly Lane Kiffin playing with this, because nobody
- 1:07Speaker 3: saw Sam Leavitt get injured last week against La Tech,
- 1:09Speaker 3: even though it threw three picks. And I think we
- 1:12Speaker 3: all assume this is gamesmanship. How do you feel about
- 1:14Speaker 3: that right off the bat?
- 1:15Speaker 2: It's Lane Kiffin. Of course it's gamesmanship. Assumed gamesmanship. And
- 1:18Speaker 2: I was shocked. On the Dan Patrick show, Dan and
- 1:22Speaker 2: everybody else thought it was gamesmanship. But you thought maybe
- 1:24Speaker 2: there is a real injury here?
- 1:25Speaker 3: I think I went counter just to be counter a
- 1:27Speaker 3: little bit on this one because I don't think you
- 1:29Speaker 3: put someone on injury report unless it's real in college
- 1:31Speaker 3: football these days. The SEC, well, the SEC has rules
- 1:35Speaker 3: about this. You have to turn your injury report in
- 1:37Speaker 3: on Wednesday night. So he didn't have to tell the
- 1:39Speaker 3: media on Monday or Tuesday that Sam Leavitt is injured. Now,
- 1:42Speaker 3: they have to do an updated media report of injuries Thursday,
- 1:47Speaker 3: then Friday, then 90 minutes before game time. According to
- 1:50Speaker 3: SEC rules. If you're listed as doubtful, that means 25%
- 1:53Speaker 3: chance or less of playing in Saturday's game.
- 1:56Speaker 2: Paul, the average college coach lies for a living. That's
- 1:59Speaker 2: how you get recruits. Lane Kiffin is much worse than
- 2:02Speaker 2: the average coach. Obviously, he's been moving around, and he
- 2:05Speaker 2: gets a lot of flack for that. I don't have
- 2:06Speaker 2: a huge problem with him going to LSU, but I
- 2:09Speaker 2: don't trust him.
- 2:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Okay, is the move then, as gamesmanship, are you trying
- 2:14Speaker 3: to convince Ole Miss to prepare for another quarterback? Their
- 2:16Speaker 3: backup quarterbacks are Landon Clark— A transfer from Elon. Elon
- 2:21Speaker 3: was good football last year. Not to be confused with
- 2:24Speaker 3: Landry Clark, the wide receiver on Friday Night Lights.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Or Landry Jones, the backup quarterback in the NFL.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Yeah, Jesse Plemons played Landry Clark. The other quarterback, redshirt
- 2:32Speaker 3: freshman quarterback, Houston Longstreet, another great name. Transfer from USC.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yeah, no, he's a five-star recruit. People were surprised that
- 2:39Speaker 2: he wasn't the backup after they were blowing out Clemson.
- 2:43Speaker 3: But you don't buy any of this.
- 2:44Speaker 2: No, we're going to see Sam Levitt. First of all,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Sam Levitt's shoulder is the issue. He has not really
- 2:48Speaker 2: been throwing the ball that much. He's been running like crazy.
- 2:51Speaker 2: LSU put up 300 yards against Clemson on the ground.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I think they want to run the ball anyway. What
- 2:56Speaker 2: do you need a shoulder for for that?
- 2:58Speaker 3: Yeah, you need at least one shoulder to take the snap.
- 3:00Speaker 3: I will say that's a really interesting point is that
- 3:02Speaker 3: Sam Levitt, I think people assume when he came from
- 3:05Speaker 3: Arizona State, it's going to be just like James Daniels.
- 3:08Speaker 3: He came from Arizona State, plays well, wins a Heisman.
- 3:11Speaker 3: Sam Levitt, good-looking kid. Good quarterback. He's going to ball out.
- 3:14Speaker 3: What if they don't have their quarterback? Not just injured,
- 3:16Speaker 3: but not great.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Well, the thing about Sam Leavitt at Arizona State, he's
- 3:20Speaker 2: a gamer. Fourth quarter, he's tough. He's competitive. You know,
- 3:23Speaker 2: to me, there's only one real great Lane Kiffin quarterback
- 3:27Speaker 2: in this game, and that's Trinidad Chambers. Your boy. Yeah,
- 3:30Speaker 2: Kiffin's a great OC. I don't know if Leavitt can
- 3:32Speaker 2: run the offense that Kiffin wants, but I think he
- 3:34Speaker 2: can scramble, which would be the key factor there. You know,
- 3:37Speaker 2: the spread I'm seeing is now at two and a half. LSU.
- 3:40Speaker 2: Favorite for LSU. Okay. I said, like, LSU because of
- 3:42Speaker 2: the ground game. Now, Ole Miss had some trouble with
- 3:46Speaker 2: Louisville in week one. Remember, they went to the very
- 3:49Speaker 2: end with that. Yeah, it was a battle. Save their bacon.
- 3:51Speaker 2: This is going to be a very interesting game, and
- 3:54Speaker 2: I am almost positive that Sam Leavitt will be there, Paul.
- 3:57Speaker 2: Can we do a show bet? Because at least you
- 3:59Speaker 2: have a question mark. I don't even have a question mark.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Now, I'm not rooting for myself to win, but I'll
- 4:03Speaker 3: do a little keep it friendly on Sam Leavitt starting.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Started. I hope he doesn't come off the bench. If
- 4:09Speaker 2: he's ready to go, he better be in there from
- 4:11Speaker 2: the first play of the game.
- 4:12Speaker 3: They shoot him up at halftime and be like, North
- 4:13Speaker 3: Dallas 40, get him in there. The one last thing
- 4:15Speaker 3: about Lane Kiffin, tonight he has his coaches show. You
- 4:18Speaker 3: know they do that coaches show with the boosters and
- 4:20Speaker 3: the crowd. That's tonight at 7 o'clock local time, so
- 4:23Speaker 3: I'm sure you're going to get more about this injury.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Are you so sure about that? I don't know. Again,
- 4:28Speaker 2: it's Lane Kiffin. He could definitely go no answer on
- 4:32Speaker 2: that one. He's like, I don't want to talk about
- 4:33Speaker 2: a player's health.
- 4:34Speaker 3: All right, tonight we got the big one. This is
- 4:36Speaker 3: a really nice Thursday night matchup. You got Bills at
- 4:38Speaker 3: their new stadium, the Highmark Stadium, hosting the Lions. Both
- 4:41Speaker 3: teams won week one, but both teams escaped with a
- 4:45Speaker 3: win in week one. How do you look at this one?
- 4:47Speaker 2: Oh, I like the Bills. Okay, so there's a ton
- 4:49Speaker 2: of emotion, obviously. The new stadium's getting a lot of hype.
- 4:53Speaker 2: But the Bills last week played a much better team
- 4:56Speaker 2: than the Lions did. The Lions beat the Saints. Right.
- 4:58Speaker 2: The Bills took the best defense in the NFL to
- 5:01Speaker 2: task last week. Josh Allen dominated that game in the
- 5:05Speaker 2: air with his feet. I was incredibly impressed where Detroit,
- 5:08Speaker 2: on the other hand, snuck past New Orleans. To me,
- 5:13Speaker 2: this is a pretty lopsided game because Detroit's got a
- 5:15Speaker 2: lot of injuries, Paul. Two linemen and their entire secondary out.
- 5:18Speaker 3: I'm not giving them my pick yet. Our picks, we'll
- 5:20Speaker 3: do them in about a half an hour. But I
- 5:22Speaker 3: will say this, this is like a double pressure game.
- 5:24Speaker 3: Pressure of opening a stadium, you're going to have like
- 5:26Speaker 3: Bruce Smith back in the house and all these old
- 5:28Speaker 3: players back in the house. And sometimes that sets up
- 5:30Speaker 3: for disappointment. The energy and then it just falls. I
- 5:33Speaker 3: think there's a lot of pressure on the Lions to
- 5:35Speaker 3: have a statement game. Going into the season, I don't
- 5:37Speaker 3: think a lot of people predicted the Lions to get
- 5:39Speaker 3: back to where they were two years ago. And they're
- 5:42Speaker 3: like barely on the radar as a contender. And they've
- 5:45Speaker 3: got all the talent back. But if they could win tonight,
- 5:48Speaker 3: national TV, big crowd, away... Make a statement. They need
- 5:51Speaker 3: that one.
- 5:51Speaker 2: I don't think they need it, Paul. It's out of conference.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And they're getting a lot of guys back in about
- 5:57Speaker 2: four or five weeks.
- 5:57Speaker 3: I'll say it's a perception need, not a math need.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Well, maybe because it's a national game. I don't know.
- 6:03Speaker 2: I think Detroit is going to be a different team
- 6:04Speaker 2: by the end of the season. I think Buffalo has
- 6:07Speaker 2: all the pressure. Know what it reminds me of? Coach
- 6:09Speaker 2: K's last game at Cameron.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Oh, that's a good poll by you.
- 6:12Speaker 2: Remember Duke had all that pressure a few years ago.
- 6:14Speaker 2: Then North Carolina whooped them. So that'd be my fear
- 6:18Speaker 2: if I was Buffalo, that it becomes too much.
- 6:19Speaker 3: But I don't know what they're going to have there
- 6:21Speaker 3: at this new stadium. Maybe a new tradition. You know,
- 6:22Speaker 3: they ring the bell at some places. Seattle does that thing.
- 6:26Speaker 3: If they bring out like Jim Kelly or Andre Reid
- 6:28Speaker 3: or guys like that and they start ringing bells. You know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: breaking tables.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Well, that's their thing, breaking tables. You can't come up
- 6:35Speaker 2: with another thing. That thing is so famous now.
- 6:37Speaker 3: So what would you have there? Would you have some
- 6:38Speaker 3: type of permanent broken table thing at the start, and
- 6:41Speaker 3: they just throw a lucky fan through it? If Jim
- 6:43Speaker 3: Kelly threw me through a table, I'd be honored.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Well, are you talking about pregame? Because there's probably been
- 6:47Speaker 2: hundreds of fans who've already gone through tables in the
- 6:49Speaker 2: parking lot.
- 6:50Speaker 3: They're conditioned for it.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. It's kind of obvious. I hope
- 6:53Speaker 2: they come up with something a little more original. But
- 6:55Speaker 2: it does have a feel of a celebration for Buffalo football.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Remember they did Hard Knocks there a couple years ago? Right.
- 7:00Speaker 2: You've got to admit, Bill's fans are as loyal as
- 7:03Speaker 2: any fan base.
- 7:03Speaker 3: All right, what do you want to go to next?
- 7:05Speaker 3: You want to go to 0-1 teams?
- 7:06Speaker 2: Yes, 0-1, because do you have any stats on what
- 7:09Speaker 2: 0-2 teams need to do? Usually about 85% of them
- 7:12Speaker 2: will not make the playoffs.
- 7:13Speaker 3: It is the most popular stat in all of sports media.
- 7:15Speaker 3: 0-2 teams, their chance of making the playoffs is usually low,
- 7:18Speaker 3: but we're going to be way ahead of that on
- 7:19Speaker 3: Not So Fast. The 0-1 team that most needs a
- 7:23Speaker 3: win this week, and I'm going to let you go first, Pearl.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Well, I think it's obvious because of the preseason narrative.
- 7:27Speaker 2: The Los Angeles Rams better win this week. They face
- 7:30Speaker 2: a resurgent Giants team, but the Rams were everybody's Super
- 7:34Speaker 2: Bowl pick, dream team. They looked nothing like that in Australia.
- 7:38Speaker 2: And there was this narrative that, hey, we're going to
- 7:40Speaker 2: fly into Australia at the last minute, so at least
- 7:42Speaker 2: we're ready for week two. So they get an extra
- 7:45Speaker 2: day here. It's on Monday night. They better be ready
- 7:48Speaker 2: to go. No Miles Garrett. Matthew Stafford did not look
- 7:51Speaker 2: good at all in the season opener. To me, that
- 7:54Speaker 2: is the most pressure by far around the whole NFL
- 7:57Speaker 2: because of all the preseason hype.
- 7:58Speaker 3: And it's national TV again. Then you've got the Broncos,
- 8:00Speaker 3: which should clean things up. The Eagles are always tough.
- 8:03Speaker 3: That's really tough for the Rams because... I still think
- 8:05Speaker 3: they'll be there at the end, but you don't want
- 8:06Speaker 3: to get in a position where you're looking up in
- 8:09Speaker 3: that division going, we're not going to have home field.
- 8:11Speaker 3: Because if there's any year for the Rams to have
- 8:13Speaker 3: home field, nobody has to leave. Aaron Donald could stay
- 8:16Speaker 3: at home. You play the Super Bowl at home.
- 8:17Speaker 2: That's a great point. And, you know, remember they went
- 8:20Speaker 2: to Philly a couple years ago and it snowed. Yep.
- 8:22Speaker 2: And they almost beat the Eagles, but that is not
- 8:24Speaker 2: a situation they want, especially their old Paul. You know
- 8:26Speaker 2: old people don't like cold weather and snow. Me neither.
- 8:29Speaker 2: old people.
- 8:30Speaker 3: They're 36 years old. My 0-1 team that really needs
- 8:33Speaker 3: a win, I think this is biggest of all. I
- 8:35Speaker 3: would say it's the Green Bay Packers. Their head coach,
- 8:39Speaker 3: Matt LaFleur, he's catching a lot of heat this week.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Sometimes national heat and local heat is different. I haven't
- 8:44Speaker 3: seen a lot of national stories about Matt LaFleur and
- 8:47Speaker 3: what's going on there and the way he's letting wins
- 8:50Speaker 3: go away, not closing victories. They had a couple last year,
- 8:53Speaker 3: especially against the Bears, which are a big deal. That's
- 8:55Speaker 3: like a double loss. If they lose this weekend, it
- 8:58Speaker 3: just starts traction. It starts this traction that can't be
- 9:01Speaker 3: back from. Losing to the Jets is way worse, believe
- 9:04Speaker 3: it or not, than losing to Carson Wentz and the Vikings.
- 9:06Speaker 3: At least the Vikings are a decent team. Then you
- 9:10Speaker 3: look at their schedule coming up, it gets much tougher.
- 9:12Speaker 3: The Jets is supposed to be your easy win. So
- 9:14Speaker 3: I look at the Packers. If they lose this, not
- 9:15Speaker 3: just the math of staying in that division for even
- 9:18Speaker 3: a wild card, now your head coach is kind of
- 9:20Speaker 3: on the clock. And when they do those things, who's
- 9:23Speaker 3: most on the hot seat? I think his name would
- 9:24Speaker 3: go to number one if they lost this weekend.
- 9:26Speaker 2: True, although the schedule dictates a pretty strong start. They
- 9:30Speaker 2: couldn't come out of this 3-1. Could be.
- 9:32Speaker 3: I'm just saying the worst-case scenario.
- 9:34Speaker 2: I think that they really got to focus on holding
- 9:36Speaker 2: on to leads, and that means running the ball. Obviously,
- 9:38Speaker 2: they don't have Josh Jacobs. That's a problem. But to me,
- 9:41Speaker 2: it's a perception of are they a tough team? Are
- 9:43Speaker 2: they a mentally tough team?
- 9:44Speaker 3: Can they close?
- 9:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think they can right now, but I
- 9:47Speaker 2: think they'll be okay against the Jets.
- 9:48Speaker 3: Jordan Love, though, he's the kind of guy, like, I
- 9:51Speaker 3: love him for three quarters. I don't know I love
- 9:53Speaker 3: him in the fourth quarter. Caleb Williams is kind of
- 9:55Speaker 3: the opposite. Sometimes Caleb Williams in the first three quarters
- 9:57Speaker 3: is like, are you going to get it together? And
- 9:59Speaker 3: then the fourth quarter, he's Superman. Jordan Love sometimes is
- 10:02Speaker 3: the opposite.
- 10:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and Bo Nix is another guy who will kill
- 10:05Speaker 2: you in the fourth quarter, doesn't do anything in the
- 10:06Speaker 2: first three quarters. But that's not Jordan Love's fault. Last
- 10:09Speaker 2: week he was getting demolished by those Vikings. No doubt.
- 10:11Speaker 2: All right, we're going to turn to running backs in
- 10:14Speaker 2: our next segment. Can Derrick Henry reach the NFL rushing record?
- 10:18Speaker 2: Will he break Emmitt Smith's record? It's possible. That's next.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Not so fast.
- 10:25Speaker 3: Here we go, Pearl. Pabst and Perloff, not so fast.
- 10:27Speaker 3: The midday pick me up. Not a shocker here. Bang him.
- 10:31Speaker 3: That's one. Yeah, you don't throw that weak cheese to
- 10:34Speaker 3: my boy, Pete Crow Armstrong. And then for those who
- 10:38Speaker 3: were in the bathroom, he said, I'll just do another
- 10:40Speaker 3: one later. Two home runs for Pete Crow Armstrong. No
- 10:43Speaker 3: steals because He's always rounding the bases, rarely stopping at
- 10:47Speaker 3: first base.
- 10:47Speaker 2: Go ahead, Farrell. All right, we've done 14 episodes of
- 10:50Speaker 2: Not So Fast.
- 10:51Speaker 3: That's right.
- 10:51Speaker 2: And the midday pick-me-up has been PCA seven times fall.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Six, seven, yeah, that sounds about right, but it's not
- 10:58Speaker 3: my fault he's awesome.
- 10:59Speaker 2: You know, he better do something in the playoffs because
- 11:02Speaker 2: we were giving him a lot of love. I think
- 11:03Speaker 2: the MVP race is over. It's over. Not to put
- 11:06Speaker 2: pressure on you and your buddy PCA, but after all
- 11:09Speaker 2: these midday pick-me-ups, I want to see at least one
- 11:12Speaker 2: series victory.
- 11:13Speaker 3: In my mind, Pete and I are good friends. Pete,
- 11:14Speaker 3: keep it up. All right, back on Not So Fast, Pabst,
- 11:17Speaker 3: and Perloff. It's time for some warm takes. And now
- 11:19Speaker 3: I'm going to go first, and I'm really excited about
- 11:20Speaker 3: this one because it's the Buffalo Bills' new stadium. I
- 11:24Speaker 3: love their new stadium. I love the look of it,
- 11:26Speaker 3: the colors of the seats, the grass. This grass... And
- 11:29Speaker 3: it pops, and there's no top on it. There's no dome.
- 11:32Speaker 3: You know, it's really cold in Buffalo and very snowy,
- 11:34Speaker 3: as everyone knows. And their fans said, no, we love this.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Here's a couple reasons they went this way. They're not
- 11:40Speaker 3: getting a Super Bowl, so they didn't even try to
- 11:41Speaker 3: have a Super Bowl by putting a top on this.
- 11:44Speaker 3: You know, I don't think Buffalo would ever get a
- 11:45Speaker 3: Super Bowl because of the infrastructure of the town or
- 11:48Speaker 3: maybe visitors coming in. They're just like, fine. If I'm
- 11:51Speaker 3: a Buffalo Bills fan, I don't want a Super Bowl.
- 11:53Speaker 3: I want my team to be in a Super Bowl.
- 11:55Speaker 3: And the best way is to have a home field advantage.
- 11:57Speaker 3: And they still have it here. I am so sick
- 11:59Speaker 3: of these cookie-cutter stadiums that are being built. The Bears
- 12:02Speaker 3: are probably going to go with a top, which is
- 12:04Speaker 3: just disgusting. The Browns, it looks like a mall. The Titans,
- 12:07Speaker 3: they're going to have a top on that. The Washington
- 12:10Speaker 3: Commanders are going to have a glass top. So you
- 12:11Speaker 3: can look outside and see the elements. You just can't
- 12:14Speaker 3: feel them. I once went to a Texans game, and
- 12:16Speaker 3: the tailgate was fantastic. I want to compliment the Texans tailgate.
- 12:19Speaker 3: But then I went inside, and it was 71 degrees,
- 12:22Speaker 3: and there was no air moving whatsoever. And it was
- 12:24Speaker 3: a nice scene, and it felt nice and comfortable. And
- 12:27Speaker 3: I didn't have to put a jacket on. I didn't
- 12:30Speaker 3: get sunburned. I didn't have anything poured on me by
- 12:33Speaker 3: rain or a gutter. I want stadiums like this. And
- 12:36Speaker 3: I think I'm afraid that we're in the cookie-cutter, mixed-use
- 12:38Speaker 3: stadium era, and open-air stadiums are just going away, and
- 12:42Speaker 3: the bills are an anomaly.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I've got to ask you about the home field advantage, though.
- 12:46Speaker 2: It seems to me the Bills are built for a dome.
- 12:49Speaker 2: Their best player is a quarterback. They've just got a
- 12:51Speaker 2: great receiver, D.J. Moore. The outside team is the Chicago
- 12:54Speaker 2: Bears in 85, a great defense. That's not the Bills.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But I thought the Bills drafted. I remember watching the
- 12:59Speaker 3: draft when Josh Allen came out of Wyoming, and they
- 13:01Speaker 3: said he's the perfect outdoor bad weather quarterback. He played
- 13:04Speaker 3: at Wyoming.
- 13:05Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's from the sunniest part of California, Fireball, California.
- 13:10Speaker 2: I know you're saying he's big and he can deal
- 13:11Speaker 2: with the weather, but they are generally not a team
- 13:14Speaker 2: that has an advantage in the snow. They'd be probably
- 13:16Speaker 2: better off playing indoors.
- 13:17Speaker 3: I could stay at home and watch football indoors and
- 13:19Speaker 3: have it 72 degrees. I want to go to a
- 13:21Speaker 3: stadium and get a little rain, get a little snow,
- 13:23Speaker 3: get a little atmosphere and wind and see what happens.
- 13:26Speaker 3: The Minnesota Vikings have a very cool stadium. You and
- 13:28Speaker 3: I were there. I thought it was a pretty cool stadium,
- 13:30Speaker 3: but the idea of being outdoors in Minnesota... I think
- 13:33Speaker 3: that could really help that team. I think it's too late.
- 13:35Speaker 2: That's a team that is. They had Kirk Cousins a
- 13:37Speaker 2: quarterback for five years. That's a passing team.
- 13:39Speaker 3: He loves it indoors.
- 13:40Speaker 2: Forget it. All right. Well, you're just being a tough guy,
- 13:42Speaker 2: which I appreciate. Yeah. Okay. I want to talk about
- 13:45Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers. And the reason I want to talk about
- 13:47Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers is because we keep forgetting to talk about
- 13:50Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers. This is a man who three years ago
- 13:52Speaker 2: controlled the entire narrative of the NFL. Every morning he
- 13:56Speaker 2: came into work and said, what did Aaron Rodgers say now?
- 13:59Speaker 2: This year, Aaron Rodgers is not even near the top headline.
- 14:03Speaker 2: I can't remember one thing he's done or said that
- 14:06Speaker 2: has captured everyone's attention. Now, he did rip some former teammates.
- 14:09Speaker 2: He said some outrageous things about his ex-girlfriend this summer.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Nobody cared. I think Aaron Rodgers needs some attention. Then
- 14:17Speaker 2: he plays on Sunday against Atlanta. Now, on Sunday ticket,
- 14:20Speaker 2: you can do a quad box, Paul. That's the four
- 14:23Speaker 2: top games. Nobody puts Steelers Falcons in their quad box.
- 14:26Speaker 2: It was totally unwatchable. And that's who the Steelers are
- 14:30Speaker 2: with Aaron Rodgers right now. They're not really an interesting team.
- 14:34Speaker 2: They did throw the ball a lot. They didn't throw
- 14:35Speaker 2: the ball downfield. I think we're getting really used to
- 14:39Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers on the Steelers, and I don't think people
- 14:41Speaker 2: care anymore. He has become, Paul, late career Matt Ryan. Wow.
- 14:46Speaker 3: I see what you're saying. I can't tell. Are you
- 14:47Speaker 3: advocating for more talk about Rodgers because he's still pretty
- 14:50Speaker 3: good on the field, or just about media fatigue with
- 14:52Speaker 3: this guy?
- 14:53Speaker 2: I'm just sort of saying tongue-in-cheek Aaron Rodgers needs more
- 14:56Speaker 2: attention because it's unbelievable to me that people just don't
- 15:00Speaker 2: really care anymore.
- 15:00Speaker 3: The other thing I like what you mentioned about the
- 15:02Speaker 3: quad box. I use the quad box at home, and
- 15:04Speaker 3: it's an absolute fan judgment of the game.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 15:07Speaker 3: I'm sure they could do this. Imagine if you had
- 15:09Speaker 3: feedback of what gets quad boxed the most because sometimes
- 15:13Speaker 3: I'll look at a game and go, That's not even
- 15:14Speaker 3: making an octobox if there is such a thing.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, how much time did you spend on Atlanta-Pittsburgh?
- 15:19Speaker 3: Not a lot.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah, there was nothing to watch.
- 15:21Speaker 3: As much as I like a Cooper Rush game as
- 15:22Speaker 3: much as the next guy, I can't watch that.
- 15:24Speaker 2: Now it's Patriots-Steelers this weekend. I don't think people are
- 15:27Speaker 2: fired up. That should be a premier matchup, and it's
- 15:29Speaker 2: at 1 p.m.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Good take by you. All right, my next warm take
- 15:31Speaker 3: is a bit of chatter lately about Derrick Henry, the
- 15:34Speaker 3: great running back. Everyone loves Derrick Henry. Some topics lately
- 15:38Speaker 3: about him competing for Emmitt Smith's rushing record down the line.
- 15:41Speaker 3: And I was like, okay, that makes sense. Derrick Henry's
- 15:43Speaker 3: having a first ballot Hall of Fame career. So the
- 15:46Speaker 3: past four years, let me give you some numbers here
- 15:47Speaker 3: with Derrick Henry. All records are made to be broken,
- 15:50Speaker 3: and we like that. We kind of, I think, would
- 15:51Speaker 3: root for this record to be broken, unless you're a
- 15:53Speaker 3: Cowboy fan or MS's family. Derrick Henry's at 13,162. MS
- 15:57Speaker 3: Smith is at 18,355.
- 15:59Speaker 2: That is a gap.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Derrick Henry's 32. The past four seasons, he averaged 1,600
- 16:03Speaker 3: yards per season. He would need to do that for
- 16:09Speaker 3: four more seasons, and he'd be 100 yards short. He'd
- 16:13Speaker 3: also be 37 years old. I'm hopeful. This guy's a monster.
- 16:16Speaker 3: He's in great shape. There are some things you need
- 16:19Speaker 3: in your 30s to run for 1,500 yards. You need
- 16:22Speaker 3: to be in perfect shape without injury. He's that. You
- 16:25Speaker 3: have to have a good quarterback so people can't focus
- 16:28Speaker 3: on you. He has that. You have to be on
- 16:30Speaker 3: a good team that features the run. He has that.
- 16:33Speaker 3: He is in position to finish up his career, his 30s,
- 16:36Speaker 3: maybe better than even Walter Payton, who had a great 30s.
- 16:39Speaker 3: But Derrick Henry, a long way to go, but a
- 16:42Speaker 3: breakaway back that also has power with Lamar Jackson. I
- 16:45Speaker 3: could see two more 1,500-yard seasons, and then the chase
- 16:48Speaker 3: is on.
- 16:48Speaker 2: Well, he's got an extra game, more than Payton had
- 16:52Speaker 2: or Emmitt Smith had. I don't see this happening. Even
- 16:55Speaker 2: Marcus Allen, who was fantastic in his mid-30s, was nowhere
- 16:58Speaker 2: near that many yards. So it's going to be tough.
- 17:00Speaker 2: And I know Derrick Henry looks like he's 22, not 32.
- 17:03Speaker 2: But when he's 35, he's not running for 1,500 yards, Paul.
- 17:07Speaker 3: I look at this, and I think he's going to
- 17:09Speaker 3: have two more monster seasons, and then we can revisit
- 17:11Speaker 3: this and say, do you want to stick around and
- 17:13Speaker 3: pick off a couple— 900-yard seasons and chase this title.
- 17:17Speaker 2: Yeah, I think Derrick Henry's already done enough. I think
- 17:19Speaker 2: his legacy is set. Obviously a Hall of Famer. Okay,
- 17:22Speaker 2: for my second warm take, I'm going to turn to
- 17:25Speaker 2: college sports. And if you've been following the Protect College
- 17:27Speaker 2: Sports Act, Congress is all up in the business of
- 17:30Speaker 2: college sports. But I'm not sure they're focusing on the
- 17:33Speaker 2: right thing. Now, last fall, my guy Michael Baumgartner of
- 17:36Speaker 2: Washington introduced a bill that would limit coaching and AD
- 17:41Speaker 2: pay around the sports. He said schools have published contract
- 17:44Speaker 2: data for their head coaches have amassed a one point
- 17:48Speaker 2: seven billion dollars in potential liabilities. This season alone, colleges
- 17:52Speaker 2: are on pace to pay for one hundred sixty nine
- 17:54Speaker 2: million for coaches not to coach. It's unbelievable. And that
- 17:58Speaker 2: was last year. And the numbers are just going up.
- 18:00Speaker 2: We're going to see Lane Kiffin coach this weekend. He's
- 18:03Speaker 2: getting paid a ton. I think that there is a
- 18:06Speaker 2: longstanding tradition in college sports. that the young athletes get
- 18:11Speaker 2: some money, but most of the money goes to the adults.
- 18:14Speaker 2: And I think the adults are more interested in protecting
- 18:16Speaker 2: their money than actually making college sports fair. Another thing,
- 18:20Speaker 2: everyone's saying college sports is out of control. Guess what's
- 18:22Speaker 2: out of control as well? The TV ratings. Those are up.
- 18:25Speaker 2: And meanwhile, everyone's going after the student athletes, or... The athletes,
- 18:30Speaker 2: let's be honest here. Nobody is talking about coaching pay.
- 18:32Speaker 2: It comes up when there's a massive buyout like Jimbo
- 18:36Speaker 2: Fisher at Texas A & M. But it should be
- 18:38Speaker 2: on people's minds. And people don't know, 80s are starting
- 18:40Speaker 2: to make a lot of money, Paul. Yes. Trev Alberts
- 18:42Speaker 2: at Nebraska is making over $ 2 million. They haven't done anything.
- 18:45Speaker 2: They haven't won anything. The guy at Texas is getting
- 18:48Speaker 2: over $ 4 million next year. I could run Texas sports.
- 18:51Speaker 2: It's Texas sports. But the coaching is crazy. Obviously, these
- 18:55Speaker 2: are potential buyouts. I don't think Kirby Smart's going anywhere,
- 18:57Speaker 2: but Georgia could be on the hook for over $ 100 million.
- 18:59Speaker 2: All we're hearing about is, oh, we're overpaying for this
- 19:02Speaker 2: tackle or that tackle. To me, coaching pay is something
- 19:05Speaker 2: to watch as well because the public is paying for
- 19:07Speaker 2: some of that money. Some of it is tax dollars.
- 19:10Speaker 2: That's not really the case for the players. So if
- 19:12Speaker 2: we're going to put all this energy on limiting all
- 19:15Speaker 2: the players' money... We should also talk about the other people.
- 19:17Speaker 3: I can tell you you're spot on. I love that
- 19:19Speaker 3: you called Michael Baumgartner the representative of your guy. You
- 19:23Speaker 3: guys know each other.
- 19:24Speaker 2: You're tight.
- 19:25Speaker 3: I think that the coaches would fight this one more
- 19:26Speaker 3: than anything. They will never cap their pay. And these
- 19:29Speaker 3: state schools, state schools, not just private schools, are paying
- 19:31Speaker 3: these monstrous buyouts, and they have to make cuts in
- 19:34Speaker 3: other departments because of this. It does feel like a
- 19:36Speaker 3: bubble that has to burst, this buyout culture. When A &
- 19:39Speaker 3: M gets rid of their head coach, Jimbo Fisher— They're
- 19:42Speaker 3: still paying for that. They're going to pay for that
- 19:43Speaker 3: for decades. So it's really, really ugly.
- 19:45Speaker 2: You saw what LSU did when Lane Kiffin kind of
- 19:47Speaker 2: became available. They threw all the money they could. In
- 19:50Speaker 2: the 90s, the NCAA tried to limit coaches' pay. And
- 19:53Speaker 2: guess what? The court said that's totally illegal, which is interesting.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Now they're trying to limit the players' pay, and the
- 19:59Speaker 2: courts are sort of sitting there. I'm curious if you
- 20:01Speaker 2: can do that. Something called capitalism, Paul.
- 20:04Speaker 3: I've heard of it. I read about capitalism somewhere. All right,
- 20:06Speaker 3: it's time for a little game. Let's lighten the mood here.
- 20:08Speaker 3: You're hot and heavy there.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Good for you. A little warm.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Let's play a little bit of who said it, Pearl.
- 20:12Speaker 3: You and I are tied at three quarters of a
- 20:14Speaker 3: point in three weeks of this show. It's embarrassing. Who
- 20:16Speaker 3: said this? I would have bet every asset that I
- 20:19Speaker 3: have in my family's name that we would have come
- 20:21Speaker 3: out in the second half and played a hell of
- 20:23Speaker 3: a lot better than we did.
- 20:24Speaker 2: We didn't.
- 20:25Speaker 3: That seems like Ryan Day of Ohio State, right?
- 20:28Speaker 2: That's good. Another blown lead, Matt LaFleur of Green Bay.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I'll go with LaFleur.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Let's see who said it. I would have bet every
- 20:36Speaker 3: asset I have in my family's name that we would
- 20:38Speaker 3: have came out in the second half and played a
- 20:39Speaker 3: hell of a lot better than we did.
- 20:41Speaker 2: We didn't.
- 20:42Speaker 3: Robert Sala, the Titans. You know, he should have made
- 20:44Speaker 3: that bet. If he really believes it, he should have
- 20:46Speaker 3: put all his chips in, or his family's chips, and said, hey,
- 20:48Speaker 3: let's spend some dough.
- 20:50Speaker 2: My challenge is Robert Sala didn't play well in the
- 20:52Speaker 2: first half, so I'm not quite sure why he would
- 20:54Speaker 2: say that about the second half. He had a lot
- 20:56Speaker 2: of problems.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah, I would like to make some bets with Robert
- 20:58Speaker 3: Sala because clearly he's not confident in his football team.
- 21:01Speaker 3: All right, let's go next one for who said it.
- 21:03Speaker 3: Here we go, Pearl.
- 21:04Speaker 2: Ready?
- 21:04Speaker 3: Here you go. Let's get this one. Speaking for myself,
- 21:07Speaker 3: I felt like crap all weekend. We had two days off,
- 21:09Speaker 3: and I did not feel right. Took a couple days.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I was good by Monday talking to some of the guys. Okay,
- 21:15Speaker 3: this clearly is a Rams player. I'm going to go.
- 21:20Speaker 3: It can't be Matt Stafford.
- 21:21Speaker 2: He wouldn't do this. I'm going to go.
- 21:25Speaker 3: Devontae Adams?
- 21:26Speaker 2: I'm going Sean McVay, head coach.
- 21:27Speaker 3: Sean McVay.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 21:30Speaker 3: Speaking for myself, I felt like crap all weekend. We
- 21:33Speaker 3: had two days off, and I didn't. Did not feel right.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Took a couple days. I was good by Monday. Talking
- 21:38Speaker 3: to some of the guys. Some guys felt fine right away.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Some went through the same stuff. But I think we're
- 21:43Speaker 3: definitely all good by now. That is 49ers head coach
- 21:45Speaker 3: Kyle Shanahan. We should have guessed that one because after
- 21:47Speaker 3: the win, you could admit that the travel bothered you.
- 21:50Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. No one has a problem with Kyle Shanahan
- 21:53Speaker 2: feeling bad. Sean McVay looked even worse. Not his hair.
- 21:56Speaker 2: I think I get half a point for that because
- 21:57Speaker 2: I had a coach who played in Australia.
- 21:59Speaker 3: You've got to score somewhere, so maybe a half a
- 22:01Speaker 3: point for that. All right, coming up. Let's talk more
- 22:03Speaker 3: about Lions Bills and the brand new stadium. Chris Brown,
- 22:06Speaker 3: their play-by-play man on radio, will join us to talk
- 22:08Speaker 3: all things Bills and the new Highmark Stadium. Stick around.
- 22:11Speaker 3: Not so fast.
- 22:13Speaker 2: Welcome back. Not so fast. Perloff and Paps. Paul, I'm
- 22:16Speaker 2: getting so excited. I'm abnormally excited for an early season
- 22:19Speaker 2: Thursday night game.
- 22:20Speaker 3: Yeah, no weather up there at Buffalo, but the new stadium,
- 22:22Speaker 3: all the shiny stuff, some former Bills in the building,
- 22:25Speaker 3: no doubt.
- 22:26Speaker 2: Yeah, and a great game. And who better to talk
- 22:28Speaker 2: about than Chris Brown, the voice of the Bills on
- 22:30Speaker 2: Bills Radio Network. Chris, how fired up are we? Are
- 22:33Speaker 2: we ready to go?
- 22:34Speaker 4: Yeah, it's going to be something.
- 22:38Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of pomp.
- 22:39Speaker 4: And circumstance involved for tonight's game, and we'll get to
- 22:42Speaker 4: witness all that on prime video. And then we'll have
- 22:47Speaker 4: a lot of, I would say, people are going to
- 22:49Speaker 4: be surprised by how loud this stadium is going.
- 22:52Speaker 2: To be tonight.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Chris, let me ask you something about the new building.
- 22:55Speaker 3: I'm a big fan of outdoor stadiums. When this started
- 22:58Speaker 3: a couple years ago and they started doing renderings and
- 23:01Speaker 3: things like that, was there ever talk of a dome
- 23:03Speaker 3: or a cover, and what was the fan reaction of that?
- 23:06Speaker 4: Yeah, there really wasn't any talk of a dome because
- 23:08Speaker 4: I think the cost was going to get too cost
- 23:10Speaker 4: prohibitive for what the state and county were willing to
- 23:15Speaker 4: commit to the project. And that combined with the money
- 23:19Speaker 4: that the Pagoulas put in It wasn't going to be
- 23:22Speaker 4: a realistic option, I don't think. And I think there
- 23:25Speaker 4: was also some preference to maintain the weather element here
- 23:30Speaker 4: in Buffalo.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I lost you there for a second, Chris. Maybe it's
- 23:37Speaker 2: snowing in Buffalo.
- 23:40Speaker 3: It's good to know that they never really considered. That's
- 23:42Speaker 3: understandable because I could see the fans saying, that's a no-go.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I mean, that's our brand.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Oh, absolutely. I mean, they love those stories where the
- 23:48Speaker 2: fans come out and shovel snow, get paid a little
- 23:50Speaker 2: bit by the Bills, get hot chocolate.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Would you do that if you had a day off?
- 23:53Speaker 2: Yes, absolutely. Chris, you back with us? I'm here. Yeah.
- 23:58Speaker 2: We might have had some weather interference in Buffalo. Chris,
- 24:01Speaker 2: I have a question about the way the Bills have
- 24:02Speaker 2: been built over the years. They actually haven't built the
- 24:04Speaker 2: roster necessarily for cold weather. They're a passing team with
- 24:08Speaker 2: this great quarterback. Is there anyone who's ever said, you
- 24:11Speaker 2: know what, we need to be more defensive-oriented and more running-oriented,
- 24:15Speaker 2: although they are running the ball, to sort of fit
- 24:17Speaker 2: the elements late in the year?
- 24:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, they did lead the league in rushing
- 24:21Speaker 4: last year. I mean, James Cook was the number one
- 24:23Speaker 4: rusher in football, so they can do that if they
- 24:25Speaker 4: need to. I kind of sense that Joe Brady wants
- 24:29Speaker 4: to lean into Josh Allen's arm a little bit more
- 24:31Speaker 4: here and throwing it through the wind was never a
- 24:33Speaker 4: problem for Josh in the old place. And with the
- 24:36Speaker 4: contour of this new stadium having a higher profile and
- 24:40Speaker 4: incorporating what the engineers call wind confusion, the wind in
- 24:46Speaker 4: the stadium is going to be far lesser than it
- 24:48Speaker 4: used to be. They believe they've cut it by more
- 24:52Speaker 4: than 50%.
- 24:53Speaker 2: So even when it's.
- 24:54Speaker 4: Windy outside, it's not going to be windy in there.
- 24:57Speaker 4: And I did a tour last October, and it was
- 25:01Speaker 4: a windy day when we went over there. And you're
- 25:04Speaker 4: leaning into the wind gusts to get into the stadium.
- 25:07Speaker 4: Then you get inside, and it's barely discernible. So the
- 25:11Speaker 4: engineers got it right. Wind is rarely going to be
- 25:14Speaker 4: a factor in this stadium anymore.
- 25:16Speaker 3: Chris Brown, Doppler 4,000. Good breakdown there, Chris. I love that.
- 25:19Speaker 3: I didn't know that about the win. Let me ask
- 25:21Speaker 3: you about Joe Brady. You mentioned he's the new head coach.
- 25:24Speaker 3: I think a lot of people still remember him at
- 25:26Speaker 3: LSU in 2019 with Joe Burrow and how much success
- 25:28Speaker 3: he had there. We only have one game. You see
- 25:31Speaker 3: the team much more than we do. Do you expect
- 25:33Speaker 3: the offense to look different and in what way or
- 25:35Speaker 3: more similar than last year?
- 25:37Speaker 2: I think there's going to be more downfield passing.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I mean, Josh's yards per attempt went down to the
- 25:42Speaker 4: lowest they've been in his entire career last season. And
- 25:45Speaker 4: it's because they really didn't have a true outside X receiver.
- 25:48Speaker 4: They didn't have downfield threats they could count on week
- 25:52Speaker 4: in and week out. That was due in part to
- 25:55Speaker 4: the fact that Josh Palmer was nicked up all last
- 25:57Speaker 4: season after the hip drop tackle in week six at Atlanta.
- 26:01Speaker 4: He wasn't right the rest of the year. Couldn't really
- 26:03Speaker 4: run well. He's healthy now. You've added DJ Moore, who
- 26:07Speaker 4: I think proved he can be a downfield threat in
- 26:09Speaker 4: his debut performance last week.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Five catches, 100 yards, and a touchdown.
- 26:13Speaker 4: And you couple that with Khalil Shakir and a healthy
- 26:18Speaker 4: Dalton Kincaid who can get downfield. I mean, Dalton Kincaid
- 26:21Speaker 4: averaged 26 yards a catch last week. He has one
- 26:23Speaker 4: of the best defenses in football. So I think the
- 26:26Speaker 4: downfield element is going to be far more present in
- 26:28Speaker 4: this passing game now.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Chris, talk about tonight's matchup. The Lions have injuries on
- 26:33Speaker 2: the offensive line, and we know a lot about their
- 26:35Speaker 2: injuries in the secondary. When the Bills are scouting this game,
- 26:39Speaker 2: I know you've done it all week, where are they
- 26:41Speaker 2: trying to attack Detroit?
- 26:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, I think they want to start with
- 26:45Speaker 4: the run game, much like they did last week. I
- 26:48Speaker 4: think they want to just stay in favorable down and
- 26:50Speaker 4: distance to leave Joe Brady's playbook wide open. Because third
- 26:54Speaker 4: and longs are not fun with Aiden Hutchinson coming screaming
- 26:57Speaker 4: off the edge there. So I think they just want
- 26:59Speaker 4: to stay in manageable down and distance so the full
- 27:01Speaker 4: menu is open. But with the success that this passing
- 27:05Speaker 4: game had last week against the number six defense against
- 27:09Speaker 4: the pass in the league last year, and knowing that
- 27:13Speaker 4: The two starting safeties for this Detroit Lions team, they're
- 27:16Speaker 4: on PUP right now. Brian Brandt not playing, Kirby Joseph
- 27:19Speaker 4: not playing. No offense to Avante Maddox or to Chuck Clark,
- 27:23Speaker 4: who had a pick last week against New Orleans, but
- 27:26Speaker 4: they're not those guys. So I think the middle of
- 27:28Speaker 4: the field is going to try to get exploited by
- 27:30Speaker 4: this Bills passing game.
- 27:32Speaker 3: Chris, I want to go back briefly before we let
- 27:33Speaker 3: you go to the stadium. I know you've got to work.
- 27:35Speaker 3: You're working right now. What is the coolest thing inside
- 27:38Speaker 3: or outside the stadium, tailgate or inside? And the obvious
- 27:42Speaker 3: question is, at the concession stands, which I know you
- 27:44Speaker 3: can't really go to, are wings available for the fans?
- 27:48Speaker 2: Yes. Yes, they are.
- 27:50Speaker 4: That's kind of a major obvious one there. But I
- 27:52Speaker 4: understand why you're asking it. Yeah, they're going to have those.
- 27:56Speaker 4: I don't think there's any question about that. I think
- 27:58Speaker 4: the coolest thing is some of the technology, because Bills
- 28:00Speaker 4: fans have been without a lot of the modern amenities
- 28:03Speaker 4: that a lot of other fans around the league have
- 28:05Speaker 4: enjoyed in far newer stadiums. And they have one of
- 28:08Speaker 4: these checkout areas where you literally just walk in, you
- 28:11Speaker 4: pick up whatever you want, and electronic cameras see what
- 28:15Speaker 4: you're picking up, and you just have your card, you
- 28:18Speaker 4: walk out with it, and you're good to go. They
- 28:20Speaker 4: want to get people back in the seats as quick
- 28:22Speaker 4: as they can because they want fans in the seats
- 28:25Speaker 4: to make it as loud as possible watching the game.
- 28:27Speaker 2: Chris, have a great time tonight. Good luck with the
- 28:29Speaker 2: new stadium. It sounds awesome. We'll be watching. Yeah, thanks, guys.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Enjoy it. Yeah, I know exactly what he's talking about
- 28:35Speaker 2: on the sort of self-checkout That's really cool. You know,
- 28:39Speaker 2: I've been to Buffalo a few times. He's right. That
- 28:41Speaker 2: old stadium was not much to look at.
- 28:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and the wind thing being down, that's the thing
- 28:44Speaker 3: I did not know about. I had to ask about
- 28:46Speaker 3: the wings. I know it's an obvious answer, yes, but
- 28:49Speaker 3: wings at a football game, that's a messy dish. Usually not,
- 28:52Speaker 3: except for Buffalo, you know, a lot of napkins, you're
- 28:55Speaker 3: on your lap. That could be a disaster. But people
- 28:57Speaker 3: in Buffalo know how to handle them.
- 28:58Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, let's turn to college football. There's some
- 29:01Speaker 2: news out of North Carolina. There's always news out of
- 29:03Speaker 2: North Carolina. Assistant coach Steve Belichick has officially resigned, Paul.
- 29:09Speaker 2: Is that the word?
- 29:10Speaker 3: Yeah, he resigned. They're wrapping up their self-investigation. There's another
- 29:13Speaker 3: investigation by a local TV station going on with UNC football.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Michael Lombardi, the GM, a couple weeks ago, goes. Steve Belichick,
- 29:20Speaker 3: a lot of smoke around him, no pun. And they
- 29:23Speaker 3: said now he is resigning as defensive coordinator of the program.
- 29:27Speaker 3: And what's interesting is they're 2-0. They're 2-0 with two
- 29:31Speaker 3: nice wins, the TCU win. And they're at Clemson this weekend.
- 29:35Speaker 3: If somehow UNC football can beat Clemson, and then you
- 29:38Speaker 3: get a week off, then you're Notre Dame, home, national TV,
- 29:42Speaker 3: two undefeated teams. They could still win their way out
- 29:45Speaker 3: of this. When I say they, I mean Bill Belichick.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Absolutely. You know, I don't love the Nepo baby narrative
- 29:49Speaker 2: all the time. Steve Belichick really felt like an Epo baby.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Did they really need him? If you have the dad there,
- 29:55Speaker 2: what do you need Steve there for?
- 29:56Speaker 3: It's hard to know how much he did or didn't do,
- 29:57Speaker 3: but the fact that he's resigning and his father is
- 30:00Speaker 3: letting him resign for the good of the program shows
- 30:03Speaker 3: how tenuous this situation is.
- 30:04Speaker 2: Yeah, Bill Belichick obviously now has to answer to higher powers.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Bill Belichick had won a lot last year. I think
- 30:11Speaker 2: he would do whatever he wanted, but that is not
- 30:12Speaker 2: the case.
- 30:13Speaker 3: Clemson this weekend. All right, before we go, we like
- 30:14Speaker 3: to do the rando. Something we saw on the Internet,
- 30:16Speaker 3: and everyone saw this one on the Internet, Let me
- 30:19Speaker 3: throw you out to Hudson Speedway in New Hampshire, Pearl.
- 30:22Speaker 3: Check out what's going on here. A truck with a
- 30:24Speaker 3: trailer and other random cars. I think that's like a
- 30:28Speaker 3: Honda Civic trying to get on the back of the
- 30:30Speaker 3: trailer in real time.
- 30:32Speaker 2: Incredible.
- 30:32Speaker 3: This is called King of the Hill Trailer Race Hudson Speedway.
- 30:36Speaker 3: I watched this probably 30 times yesterday. Your thoughts?
- 30:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, there's talk of it becoming the new
- 30:40Speaker 2: national pastime. It's so popular. People love this clip more
- 30:43Speaker 2: than anything. Do you think you could do it, Paul?
- 30:45Speaker 3: You know I like to think I can drive and
- 30:48Speaker 3: I'll throw around my relationship with the great Tony Stewart. Yes,
- 30:51Speaker 3: I would like to do this. I would volunteer. I
- 30:52Speaker 3: would pay the entrance fee. I have an old F-150.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I think I could get up there. That's a nice
- 30:58Speaker 3: effort right there.
- 30:59Speaker 2: I'm a good parallel parker. I think that skill would
- 31:01Speaker 2: come in. I'm not a great driver per se. Yeah,
- 31:04Speaker 2: this is incredible. This probably is the biggest social media
- 31:08Speaker 2: clip of the year. It's incredible. Everywhere I look.
- 31:09Speaker 3: You know, we have to do a show. Otherwise, I
- 31:11Speaker 3: could just watch this over and over and over again.
- 31:13Speaker 2: All right, coming up next, Jason Tatum was on the
- 31:16Speaker 2: Dan Patrick show. He had an interesting comment on his
- 31:19Speaker 2: former teammate, Jalen Brown. We'll get into it. Not so fast.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Why have an oversight committee if you don't have any power?
- 31:31Speaker 4: Right?
- 31:36Speaker 1: I don't understand this. This is really, really simple. You
- 31:40Speaker 1: added one second. You shouldn't take away the one second.
- 31:45Speaker 1: You take away the one play, and we know the result.
- 31:48Speaker 1: That's it. This is the one case where you can
- 31:51Speaker 1: say with absolute certainty, we added a second, shouldn't been there.
- 31:56Speaker 1: They shouldn't have gotten another play. It's like, let's say
- 31:59Speaker 1: you turned in a project and the teacher said, no,
- 32:03Speaker 1: you turned it in too late. I'm sorry. I'm going
- 32:05Speaker 1: to have to give you an F. And then you
- 32:07Speaker 1: find out, no, you actually turned it in on time.
- 32:10Speaker 1: I'm sorry. I already ruled. I don't have the power
- 32:14Speaker 1: to overturn this, but I agree with you. I agree
- 32:17Speaker 1: with you.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff, NBC Sports
- 32:21Speaker 3: Now and Peacock. I love this clip from today because
- 32:24Speaker 3: I saw this last night and I texted over to Dan.
- 32:26Speaker 3: I said, did you know there was an oversight committee
- 32:29Speaker 3: still looking at the Western Michigan, Michigan ending? He goes,
- 32:32Speaker 3: oh yeah, what'd they decide? I go, yeah, they said
- 32:33Speaker 3: they can't do anything about it. And he texted me,
- 32:35Speaker 3: he goes, what do you mean they can't do anything
- 32:36Speaker 3: about it? Why have a committee if you can't do
- 32:38Speaker 3: anything about it? And then he just took that and
- 32:39Speaker 3: did down there. And I think that was one of
- 32:42Speaker 3: the things Dan does so well is kind of take
- 32:43Speaker 3: the voice of the everyman fan. He's Dan Patrick, but
- 32:46Speaker 3: he says like, you have an oversight committee. In general,
- 32:49Speaker 3: that's to fix things that are problems. I think that
- 32:52Speaker 3: holds in general of oversight. And if you can't fix it,
- 32:55Speaker 3: why hold the hearing?
- 32:56Speaker 2: Absolutely. Dan talked me into this one. I had no
- 32:59Speaker 2: inclination to say that Western Michigan should have won the game.
- 33:03Speaker 2: And now I'm all about it. Or at least say
- 33:05Speaker 2: both teams get a tie. Because Dan nailed it exactly.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Why have the committee if you're just advising and you're
- 33:10Speaker 2: not even going to take the advice?
- 33:11Speaker 3: And he added that this is the one situation where
- 33:14Speaker 3: you can look at this situation and say, That untimed
- 33:17Speaker 3: down was unfairly given. Let's remove it. The result is
- 33:20Speaker 3: a Western Michigan win. And I think everyone would be like,
- 33:24Speaker 3: this is the right decision, this specific. And I don't
- 33:26Speaker 3: think it opens up a can of worms. You're not
- 33:27Speaker 3: going to go back to a play in the first
- 33:29Speaker 3: half and say, oh, the ref made a bad call
- 33:31Speaker 3: in the first half. Let's overrule it. No, this is
- 33:33Speaker 3: a very specific end-of-game situation that was fouled up.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Yeah, a caller tried to insert that. Hey, let's look
- 33:38Speaker 2: at every call in the game. This is totally unique,
- 33:41Speaker 2: and it's simple. It's not that complicated. Western Michigan won
- 33:45Speaker 2: the game.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Western Michigan. I did have an idea. What if Western
- 33:48Speaker 3: Michigan gets one untimed down going forward? Like if they
- 33:51Speaker 3: get in a tough game in a max situation, and
- 33:53Speaker 3: at the end of the game they lost, we get
- 33:54Speaker 3: one more down. We're owed one more down. Just a thought,
- 33:57Speaker 3: warm take, bonus call.
- 33:57Speaker 2: But then the other team gets screwed.
- 34:00Speaker 3: Warm take bonus coverage. All right, here we go. Jason Tatum.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Jason Tatum, the great player for the Celtics was on
- 34:05Speaker 3: the Dan Patrick show. And I think Dan mentioned this
- 34:07Speaker 3: was the first time he was ever a guest on
- 34:09Speaker 3: the show. I'm not sure. And he talked about different things.
- 34:12Speaker 3: We talked about some fun stuff. And then we got
- 34:14Speaker 3: to his relationship with his former teammate, current Sixer, Jalen Brown.
- 34:20Speaker 5: I love that guy.
- 34:23Speaker 3: Well, we were able to.
- 34:25Speaker 5: Accomplished together in nine years right went to the conference
- 34:27Speaker 5: finals five times we went to the championship twice we
- 34:31Speaker 5: won the championship um we've shared all-star games together you
- 34:35Speaker 5: can't talk about him without talking about me and and
- 34:38Speaker 5: vice versa right the success that we've had as just
- 34:41Speaker 5: two young kids growing up in this league unfortunately the
- 34:45Speaker 5: the business of basketball is always going to play a
- 34:48Speaker 5: part um you know nobody has ever played together forever
- 34:53Speaker 5: um But it's not like a thing to be sad
- 34:59Speaker 5: or upset about. It's a thing to celebrate what we
- 35:03Speaker 5: were able to do.
- 35:06Speaker 2: Wow. So we had a big debate in the control
- 35:09Speaker 2: room over this. Was Jason Tatum overcompensating? Because Jalen Brown
- 35:13Speaker 2: had some somewhat critical comments about the situation in Boston.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Tatum went full force positive there. We don't all buy it.
- 35:21Speaker 2: We think that he's just trying to say the right thing.
- 35:23Speaker 3: No, I think that's a veteran on a big national
- 35:25Speaker 3: radio show saying all the right things or things that
- 35:28Speaker 3: are the most palatable on a situation that probably wasn't
- 35:31Speaker 3: that great behind the scenes. It feels like two guys
- 35:33Speaker 3: who both think they are and are the alpha dog,
- 35:36Speaker 3: not exactly figuring out who is going to be the
- 35:38Speaker 3: double alpha dog. And now that he's gone... There's no
- 35:41Speaker 3: upside for him to say anything negative. He can do
- 35:43Speaker 3: it on the court. He's going to get a lot
- 35:44Speaker 3: of chances to do it on the court.
- 35:45Speaker 2: And he is right. They were awesome together on the court.
- 35:47Speaker 2: That's the bottom line. Overall, I think we'll get into
- 35:51Speaker 2: it later when we can get Dan back here. The
- 35:53Speaker 2: Tatum interview, there was a lot of work going on there.
- 35:56Speaker 3: Maybe we'll have Dan pop in tomorrow to talk about
- 35:57Speaker 3: the Tatum interview because it took a lot to get
- 35:59Speaker 3: to that point. There was some ramping up involved.
- 36:01Speaker 2: Yeah. All right. We got another great clip. Oklahoma, of course,
- 36:04Speaker 2: lost to Michigan last weekend. So Baker Mayfield had to
- 36:07Speaker 2: pay off a bet with his head coach Todd Bowles.
- 36:09Speaker 2: Watch this. That hurts.
- 36:15Speaker 4: That hurts real bad.
- 36:17Speaker 3: It's been a rough couple days.
- 36:21Speaker 2: Oh, damn, Todd.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Can you explain that for us?
- 36:24Speaker 3: Oklahoma versus Michigan.
- 36:26Speaker 5: Yeah, Todd's son was on the winning side of it.
- 36:30Speaker 2: The Sooners were not.
- 36:30Speaker 3: And so, therefore, I squeezed into this little tank top.
- 36:35Speaker 3: That is fantastic. I think that's one of the reasons
- 36:37Speaker 3: people like Baker Mayfield, that he's the kind of guy.
- 36:40Speaker 3: He doesn't look like an NFL quarterback. He looks like
- 36:42Speaker 3: he's in a TV show about this wild, crazy NFL quarterback.
- 36:46Speaker 3: He's got the hat on back, or it's the beard,
- 36:48Speaker 3: the arms, the flair, and But he paid up on
- 36:50Speaker 3: the bet, and that's good TV.
- 36:51Speaker 2: Yeah, and it's funny. Coming out for week one, he
- 36:53Speaker 2: was a wild man on the field against Cincinnati for
- 36:56Speaker 2: good and bad. He is never boring. We were talking
- 36:59Speaker 2: earlier about how Aaron Rodgers is getting a little boring.
- 37:01Speaker 2: Baker Mayfield is getting a lot of that Aaron Rodgers
- 37:03Speaker 2: attention because he's so interesting.
- 37:05Speaker 3: You know what about Baker Mayfield? I still can't tell.
- 37:07Speaker 3: He kind of reminds me of the modern-day Brett Favre.
- 37:10Speaker 3: He's going to take some risks because Brett Favre had
- 37:13Speaker 3: a lot more physical ability, bigger, stronger, bigger arm. But
- 37:16Speaker 3: Baker's just not scared. And I don't think he's the
- 37:18Speaker 3: most talented, not even the top 10 most physically talented
- 37:21Speaker 3: quarterbacks in the sport. I'd say he's at the bottom
- 37:23Speaker 3: 10 in physical skills. But his bravado, his not being
- 37:27Speaker 3: afraid to run. He's the kind of guy you'd want
- 37:29Speaker 3: as your quarterback, no matter what the price is.
- 37:31Speaker 2: Well, yes and no.
- 37:32Speaker 3: Not compared to Josh Allen. I'm talking about that next tier.
- 37:35Speaker 2: But I did bring up a real football conversation. The
- 37:38Speaker 2: Bucs are committing to him for likely two to three
- 37:39Speaker 2: years more. What's the ceiling with a Baker Mayfield? Grit
- 37:43Speaker 2: can only get you so far, Paul. It's not getting
- 37:44Speaker 2: them to the Super Bowl.
- 37:45Speaker 3: Well, see, I disagree from the standpoint of I think
- 37:48Speaker 3: in a tight playoff game, he'll do whatever it takes.
- 37:50Speaker 3: And I know they'll all do whatever it takes. but
- 37:52Speaker 3: I like him in a tight situation.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that he plays beyond his physical abilities,
- 37:57Speaker 2: which is good, but it gets you 10 wins at most.
- 37:59Speaker 2: It doesn't get you to where you want to be.
- 38:02Speaker 2: I'm worried about the Bucs with Baker because I know
- 38:04Speaker 2: they're going to make the playoffs here in the NFC South,
- 38:06Speaker 2: but are they going to take the next step?
- 38:07Speaker 3: All right, our last clip, and this seems to be
- 38:09Speaker 3: Groundhog's Day here on Not So Fast. Deshaun Watson, the
- 38:12Speaker 3: quarterback of the Browns, they let him talk again, and
- 38:15Speaker 3: here's how that went.
- 38:17Speaker 6: I think the media has this expectation that I'm supposed
- 38:20Speaker 6: to throw 400 yards and five touchdowns every week. Until
- 38:24Speaker 6: that happens, I guess it's going to be the same situation. Again,
- 38:29Speaker 6: my job is to make sure I'm operating well so
- 38:31Speaker 6: we can try to get a win and keep moving
- 38:34Speaker 6: forward from there.
- 38:35Speaker 3: A couple things, Pearl. I did some research and I
- 38:37Speaker 3: looked up how many times Deshaun Watson threw for 400
- 38:40Speaker 3: yards and five touchdowns. None times as a Brown.
- 38:42Speaker 2: None.
- 38:44Speaker 3: I think they'd be fine if he threw for 200
- 38:45Speaker 3: yards and two touchdowns in a game. And I'm being
- 38:49Speaker 3: barely kidding.
- 38:50Speaker 2: Well, the funny thing, though, in Houston, he did throw
- 38:52Speaker 2: for those. Oh, yeah. So where's that guy?
- 38:54Speaker 3: I don't know where that guy is. I know he's
- 38:56Speaker 3: had injuries, but before those Achilles injuries, he started stinking.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I think that's why the media expects him to throw
- 39:02Speaker 2: for 400 yards. They've seen it before. He's getting paid
- 39:05Speaker 2: for those kind of performances, and he's not getting anywhere
- 39:07Speaker 2: near that.
- 39:07Speaker 3: He is a weird character because they stick with him.
- 39:10Speaker 3: I think it's a financial decision. I think it's coming
- 39:12Speaker 3: from up top, and Browns fans have to be If
- 39:15Speaker 3: they could be more frustrated than they were last year,
- 39:17Speaker 3: they are this year.
- 39:18Speaker 2: Yeah, if he plays badly this week, he might be
- 39:20Speaker 2: out by week three.
- 39:21Speaker 3: Okay, and not so fast, just like you at home,
- 39:22Speaker 3: we love sports movies, and we have some sports movie
- 39:25Speaker 3: updates for you. We all know that the John Madden
- 39:28Speaker 3: film is coming out. That's nicholas cage as john madden
- 39:30Speaker 3: which is wild and christian bale that's a big-time actor
- 39:33Speaker 3: yeah as al davis the former uh raiders owner.
- 39:37Speaker 2: Yeah they look like their parts they're christian bale of
- 39:39Speaker 2: course from england playing al davis i can't wait to
- 39:41Speaker 2: see that.
- 39:42Speaker 3: No british accent there i think people are excited about
- 39:44Speaker 3: that so here's the next one the pete rose biopic
- 39:47Speaker 3: which is in in initial stages being played by actor
- 39:50Speaker 3: Marky Mark, Mark Wahlberg. Your thoughts?
- 39:53Speaker 2: Well, I saw a photo of this. Turns out it
- 39:54Speaker 2: was AI. I got fooled again.
- 39:56Speaker 3: It's okay.
- 39:56Speaker 2: But I think he's going to be amazing as Pete Rose,
- 39:59Speaker 2: and there's so many different parts of the story. He
- 40:01Speaker 2: was on the Rich Eisen show. He said he wanted
- 40:02Speaker 2: to do when he broke the hit record, and then
- 40:04Speaker 2: when he was a manager, got busted for gambling. I
- 40:08Speaker 2: can't think of a more interesting sports story. I'm in
- 40:10Speaker 2: on this.
- 40:11Speaker 3: Now, if you're Mark Wahlberg, are you going to cut
- 40:12Speaker 3: your hair into the Pete Rose bowl of the 70s,
- 40:15Speaker 3: or do you do a wig?
- 40:16Speaker 2: Are you kidding me? You've got to do the bowl.
- 40:17Speaker 2: How hard is it to do a bowl haircut?
- 40:19Speaker 3: But then you have to live with that for months
- 40:20Speaker 3: of shooting.
- 40:21Speaker 2: But Mark Wahlberg had that in Boogie Nights. Think back.
- 40:23Speaker 3: Yes, he did have a bad haircut in Boogie Nights. Well,
- 40:26Speaker 3: awesome haircut in Boogie Nights.
- 40:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't think Mark Wahlberg actually has to strain
- 40:30Speaker 2: that hard to play Pete Rose. Believe it or not,
- 40:32Speaker 2: I think they're very similar.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Low center of base, about 5'10, kind of jacked.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Yeah, competitive.
- 40:37Speaker 3: All right, the last movie, and this is a weird one,
- 40:39Speaker 3: the Tommy Lasorda movie being played by Robert De Niro.
- 40:42Speaker 3: I honestly don't know if this is real or not.
- 40:44Speaker 3: I saw some websites that said this is. Is there
- 40:46Speaker 3: a big call for a Tommy Lasorda biopic? Have you
- 40:48Speaker 3: been hearing this?
- 40:49Speaker 2: In the Lasorda family, there might be. I guess De
- 40:53Speaker 2: Niro is Italian and Lasorda was Italian.
- 40:55Speaker 3: That's confirmed.
- 40:56Speaker 2: My favorite part of Tommy Lasorda's whole career, I know
- 40:58Speaker 2: he's a great manager, when he got into an actual
- 41:00Speaker 2: fight with the Philly Fanatic, he got fed up with him.
- 41:03Speaker 2: Maybe they'll have that in the movie. I'm into that.
- 41:05Speaker 2: But generally, no. No, I don't need a Tommy Lasorda movie.
- 41:08Speaker 3: I'm going to call my shot here. I know nothing
- 41:10Speaker 3: about this movie, but the payoff has to be the
- 41:12Speaker 3: Kirk Gibson home run. It all swirls around his whole
- 41:16Speaker 3: life to putting Kirk Gibson in the game for that
- 41:18Speaker 3: home run.
- 41:19Speaker 2: Love it. That's great. I mean, listen, Pacino played a
- 41:21Speaker 2: football coach, so maybe De Niro is jealous.
- 41:23Speaker 3: That's not bad either.
- 41:24Speaker 2: Play a manager. All right.
- 41:25Speaker 3: That's pretty good.
- 41:25Speaker 2: All right.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Coming up next, constructive criticism and, oh, America's excited and
- 41:29Speaker 3: the football players are excited. Superlatives with our guy, Andrew Perloff.
- 41:33Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 41:34Speaker 2: Superloftives.
- 41:35Speaker 3: Superloftives. Apologies to you and America.
- 41:37Speaker 2: All right. Welcome back to Not So Fast. Three weeks
- 41:42Speaker 2: in a row now, the superloftives is catching fire, also
- 41:45Speaker 2: known as the endomic and superloftives. Got a lot in there. Okay,
- 41:49Speaker 2: so today we're going to do, Paul, the most overhyped storylines.
- 41:54Speaker 2: Storylines we talked about way too much this offseason that
- 41:57Speaker 2: turn out likely not to be true. And I'm going
- 42:00Speaker 2: to start in L.A. with the former San Diego Chargers.
- 42:03Speaker 2: They're playing like the bad San Diego Chargers, of course
- 42:06Speaker 2: the L.A. Chargers. I bought into Mike McDaniel as a
- 42:09Speaker 2: new offensive coordinator. I bought into two left tackle, I
- 42:12Speaker 2: mean two tackles coming back. I bought into everything Charger-wise.
- 42:16Speaker 2: Week one, it was not there. So we said to
- 42:19Speaker 2: ourselves right before the season started, we're not going to
- 42:21Speaker 2: get fooled by these Chargers again. We think they're different.
- 42:24Speaker 2: They're not. Now, to be fair, it does take a
- 42:26Speaker 2: little while to get used to a new coordinator, but
- 42:29Speaker 2: I just did not see the juice there. Justin Herbert
- 42:31Speaker 2: does not fit Mike McDaniel's offense. That stuck out to
- 42:34Speaker 2: me the entire time. Chua ran that offense way better
- 42:38Speaker 2: than Justin Herbert. So when you're in the NFL, it's
- 42:40Speaker 2: the marriage of the offensive coordinator, play caller with the quarterback.
- 42:43Speaker 2: Week one, it was not there. I am really worried
- 42:45Speaker 2: about this Charger team moving forward. It is funny.
- 42:47Speaker 3: In the offseason, there was such a great storyline of
- 42:49Speaker 3: Mike McDaniels. He is a character. And the opposite, he
- 42:54Speaker 3: looks like the young IT guy, and Jim Harbaugh looks
- 42:57Speaker 3: like a guy who doesn't even own a computer and
- 42:58Speaker 3: uses MySpace.
- 42:59Speaker 2: Absolutely. All right, my next super loftive is also in L.A.,
- 43:04Speaker 2: and everyone knows about this. All summer long, we hyped
- 43:07Speaker 2: up the Los Angeles Rams. One weekend, we feel like fools.
- 43:11Speaker 2: Let's be honest. We thought Miles Garrett in L.A. would
- 43:13Speaker 2: just be unstoppable. Obviously, the word dream team was brought up. Okay,
- 43:18Speaker 2: I'm not even talking about the injury, Paul. Now that
- 43:19Speaker 2: he's hurt, he's out. When he was on the field,
- 43:22Speaker 2: he was easy to work around for the San Francisco 49ers.
- 43:25Speaker 2: Turns out he's not going to be able to transform
- 43:27Speaker 2: the entire defense. You know, you can always win if
- 43:30Speaker 2: you have a great quarterback. You can't always win if
- 43:32Speaker 2: you have a great defensive end. I know that because
- 43:34Speaker 2: Miles Garrett always lost in Cleveland. We were way ahead
- 43:38Speaker 2: of our skis. with the L.A. Rams defense. Now, do
- 43:40Speaker 2: I think that they're going to struggle all year long
- 43:43Speaker 2: or are they out of the Super Bowl picture? Not
- 43:44Speaker 2: at all. But I think that we overhyped specifically that D-line.
- 43:48Speaker 3: Yeah, what's really confusing is I don't think Myles Garrett
- 43:51Speaker 3: got old in one offseason, but maybe there's an injury
- 43:53Speaker 3: that's been brewing or maybe there's a knee situation that's
- 43:55Speaker 3: been a little cloudy down there and he needed a
- 43:58Speaker 3: cleanup and he didn't realize he needed a cleanup until
- 44:00Speaker 3: he got on the field against a great offense tackle
- 44:01Speaker 3: and said, oh, if I'm going to compete against Trent Williams,
- 44:04Speaker 3: I need to get this looked at now, and I
- 44:06Speaker 3: may miss September.
- 44:07Speaker 2: Yeah, and again, 30s, not young anymore.
- 44:09Speaker 4: Right.
- 44:10Speaker 2: But did we see any of this coming? And when
- 44:12Speaker 2: I say we, all of NFL Nation?
- 44:13Speaker 3: No, we thought it was going to be the greatest
- 44:14Speaker 3: defensive tandem ever. And the first week, Aaron Donald's not there, understandably.
- 44:19Speaker 3: I'm going to let this play out to about Thanksgiving,
- 44:21Speaker 3: but by Thanksgiving, there's no excuses.
- 44:23Speaker 2: Okay. My last super loft to let's go up to Minnesota.
- 44:26Speaker 2: We spent a big chunk of August worrying about Kyler
- 44:30Speaker 2: Murray versus JJ McCarthy. Turns out we probably aren't going
- 44:34Speaker 2: to see either of them necessarily. So most overhyped storyline,
- 44:38Speaker 2: it's got to be Kyler Murray. The injury concerns. In 2023,
- 44:41Speaker 2: he played eight games. 24, 17 games. 25, he played
- 44:45Speaker 2: five games. I don't know how good he's going to
- 44:47Speaker 2: be when he's out there in Kevin O'Connell's offense in Minnesota,
- 44:50Speaker 2: but I do know that you have to worry about
- 44:52Speaker 2: this guy's health every time he runs around, which is
- 44:55Speaker 2: his strongest skill, is scrambling. But he has not been
- 44:58Speaker 2: able to stay healthy. We saw week one concussion. I
- 45:02Speaker 2: don't see a future for Kyler Murray in Minnesota, and
- 45:04Speaker 2: I'm already ready to say that.
- 45:05Speaker 3: I love this one by you because we spent so
- 45:07Speaker 3: much time on these two quarterbacks, and it's Wentz. And
- 45:09Speaker 3: then we spent so much time on Penix and Tua,
- 45:11Speaker 3: and it's Cooper Rush.
- 45:12Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, this whole segment, I'm just mad at
- 45:14Speaker 2: the time we wasted in August. And I feel pretty
- 45:17Speaker 2: confident that after week one, we know enough to claim
- 45:20Speaker 2: these as super lofty.
- 45:21Speaker 3: All right, in a couple minutes, we'll get to our
- 45:22Speaker 3: Bills-Lions pick. But let's do a little constructive criticism, feedback
- 45:25Speaker 3: from the fans. From our friends, whatever it may be,
- 45:28Speaker 3: let's look at the first one, Pearl. Constructive criticism for
- 45:31Speaker 3: you and I on Not So Fast.
- 45:33Speaker 2: Here we go.
- 45:35Speaker 3: Oh, our buddy Ross Tucker tweeted, Friendly reminder, the Bill's
- 45:38Speaker 3: policy of emailing the press box menu ahead of time
- 45:41Speaker 3: so I can plan my other meals accordingly should be
- 45:43Speaker 3: standard around the league. You may think this is a
- 45:45Speaker 3: joke by Ross Tucker, but this is absolutely true. Second
- 45:48Speaker 3: to you, Perloff. No one plans meals more than me, you,
- 45:51Speaker 3: and Ross Tucker. But look at the press box dinner.
- 45:54Speaker 3: We've got to go up there for a game.
- 45:55Speaker 2: I almost feel like they're playing to Ross with this
- 45:58Speaker 2: because we know he loves sausage. When he gets host
- 46:00Speaker 2: for Dan, he will put five sausage into a beer
- 46:03Speaker 2: cup and take them to the car.
- 46:04Speaker 3: With mustard, that's an absolute serious thing. Good job by
- 46:06Speaker 3: Ross Tucker and great job by the Bills there.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a very solid menu. We might have
- 46:10Speaker 2: to get to Western New York.
- 46:11Speaker 3: All right, this next one, Constructor Chris, is a fan
- 46:13Speaker 3: of ours, Undisclosed Location Crisp. He had to work yesterday,
- 46:17Speaker 3: so he couldn't watch the show, but he found a solution.
- 46:20Speaker 3: Here's how that went. His actual name is Chris, but
- 46:26Speaker 3: he goes by Russ on Twitter.
- 46:27Speaker 2: That's fantastic. I love that guy wearing the little medallion
- 46:30Speaker 2: so he can hear the show and doing some work like.
- 46:43Speaker 3: Kind of working out that's our kind of fan.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah i'm not sure how technically savvy is you could
- 46:47Speaker 2: do just earbuds.
- 46:48Speaker 3: Oh i'm not gonna make fun of it anyone who's
- 46:49Speaker 3: kind of half doing work so they listen to the
- 46:52Speaker 3: show that fits our brand.
- 46:53Speaker 2: Yeah he looked like he was having a good time
- 46:54Speaker 2: out in the outdoors doing his job.
- 46:56Speaker 3: Maybe a little light raking that is a lovely.
- 46:58Speaker 2: Way to spend an early afternoon.
- 47:00Speaker 3: Why wouldn't you want to do that all right it's
- 47:01Speaker 3: time pearl off for the feel good the feel good
- 47:03Speaker 3: something you like something you don't like hopefully it's something
- 47:06Speaker 3: that keeps your day Let's throw it out to Sleepy
- 47:09Speaker 3: Hollow High School in Sleepy Hollow, New York. You kids
- 47:13Speaker 3: don't be scared in the stands. That is not an
- 47:15Speaker 3: actual headless horseman. But that is a great mascot.
- 47:18Speaker 2: That is a killer mascot, especially for a high school team.
- 47:22Speaker 2: I still want to know how they pulled it off.
- 47:23Speaker 2: I guess it's some sort of see-through thing.
- 47:25Speaker 3: I hope so. I don't think they actually found a
- 47:27Speaker 3: person with no head who knows how to ride a horse,
- 47:28Speaker 3: but we're checking into it. I know some kids might
- 47:31Speaker 3: be terrified, but they're used to it. This is the mascot,
- 47:33Speaker 3: Sleepy Hollow High School, coming out the day. light color
- 47:37Speaker 3: in the background, the sun going down, the headless horseman
- 47:39Speaker 3: scaring people to death, I'm all in.
- 47:41Speaker 2: I'm going to date myself on this one. The scaredest
- 47:43Speaker 2: I ever was as a kid, the Scooby-Doo episode with
- 47:46Speaker 2: the headless horseman. I think about it all the time.
- 47:50Speaker 3: I think scaredest is a word.
- 47:51Speaker 2: Yeah, it turns out, though, it was the guy who
- 47:53Speaker 2: owned the grocery store down the block.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Also scary. All right, Perloff, before we get done, Bills, Lions,
- 47:59Speaker 3: a little keep it friendly, who you got? I'm going
- 48:01Speaker 3: to go first.
- 48:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 48:02Speaker 3: I am going to take the Lions outright, not even
- 48:04Speaker 3: the point. I think this is a mandatory win. I
- 48:07Speaker 3: think the getting charged up about the new stadium will
- 48:09Speaker 3: be counterproductive to the Bills players, and all the pregame
- 48:13Speaker 3: hoo-ha will actually delay their preparation.
- 48:15Speaker 2: I'm on the other side. Josh Allen was incredible against
- 48:19Speaker 2: the Texans. Detroit's not even close to the Texans' defense.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Allen is going to own the day.
- 48:24Speaker 3: I'm probably going to eat this. All right, last thing.
- 48:25Speaker 3: If we were up there for a tailgate, And a
- 48:27Speaker 3: bunch of fans said, hey, it's the Not So Fast guys.
- 48:30Speaker 3: Jump through a table. Are you doing that?
- 48:32Speaker 2: Of course. And I'm wearing this sweater. This is my
- 48:34Speaker 2: jump through a table sweater.
- 48:35Speaker 3: That's your jump through a table sweater. I knew there
- 48:36Speaker 3: was a reason for it. If we ever get up there,
- 48:38Speaker 3: we will do so. That's it for Not So Fast.
- 48:41Speaker 3: Tune in to the Dan Patrick Show tomorrow, 9 a.m.
- 48:43Speaker 3: on NBC Sports Now and Peacock. Right afterwards, Pabst and Perloff,
- 48:46Speaker 3: right here, every day, noon Eastern.
