- 0:00Yo, what's good fans? It's your boy chance here, and
- 0:03you're blocked into another episode of bullying nostalgia.
- 0:06And then if you've been following the show, you already
- 0:09know what we're about. We take those memories, those
- 0:11embarrassing, cringey. Oh my God, why did I ever think
- 0:14of that kind of moments and flip them?
- 0:16You hear me? I hear you.
- 0:21Thank you, thank you, thank you. So many.
- 0:24Of our favors to watch. Oh look, now they're being
- 0:28bashed. I guess.
- 0:30That's what we should expect on the Bullied Nostalgia Podcast.
- 0:38As Chance so eloquently said before the drop, we're the
- 0:42Bullied Nostalgia Podcast and we revisit the movies and TV shows
- 0:47we loved from our childhoods only to tear them apart like
- 0:50diamond filled chipmunk dolls as adults.
- 0:53I'm Tim and well, you've already heard from Chance.
- 0:58We're joined by John and Kai. What?
- 1:02A weird obsession with diamond filled chimpunk dolls.
- 1:06If you somehow stumbled onto our podcast and this is your first
- 1:09time with us, yes, Chance always talks like that.
- 1:13We do a monthly podcast and we have a pretty deep back catalog.
- 1:18At this point, there are almost 50 episodes available for you to
- 1:21peruse that range from Canadian TV shows for kids to Earnest,
- 1:27Scared, Stupid. For those of you a few episodes
- 1:30deep thinking this show can be better, please e-mail us
- 1:34feedback and ideas to bulliedpod@gmail.com.
- 1:39We answer every e-mail that comes through.
- 1:42Lastly, if you're a die hard and have been with us through thick
- 1:46and thin, you can spread some bullied nostalgia love with some
- 1:51of our merch found by searching Bullied Pod on redbubble.com.
- 1:58Speaking of our merch, in celebration of our upcoming 50th
- 2:02episode, I added a new design to our available shirts.
- 2:07And John, I also took down heavy eggnog, making you the only
- 2:15owner of that shirt in the world.
- 2:18Oh my goodness, the value. Sky.
- 2:21I thought it was already priceless, but now it's
- 2:25something else. The reason for taking it down,
- 2:29it was just we were making too many sales.
- 2:31No, you're the only owner in the world I.
- 2:34Wonder why nobody bought that? Does that mean people have been
- 2:37buying our other shirts? Yeah, it's scary.
- 2:40I. Wonder why someone would wear
- 2:41that heavy eggnog shirt? Dad, what's her best selling
- 2:44shirt? Oh, the best selling shirt is
- 2:46definitely nicotine colored glasses.
- 2:50But yeah, we're slowly adding to the library and if people have
- 2:53any quotable quotes or things that they want to add to the
- 2:58merch store, anything that shows up on this podcast is fair game.
- 3:02Oh my goodness, Tim, I'm looking at your new shirt.
- 3:04Oh, this is fun. Thank you.
- 3:07Yeah, for our listeners, there's Lex Luthor's Tinder account on a
- 3:12shirt, and it outlines his age. I never knew Lex was 41 years
- 3:17old, but it does say that he likes money, power and Mozart
- 3:22and dislikes animals and children.
- 3:25Common knowledge Common. Knowledge.
- 3:27Yeah, that's pretty good, Tim. That might be my favorite design
- 3:29yet. Thank you.
- 3:31Honestly, every time I go through an episode I'm like, oh,
- 3:34that could have been a T-shirt. That could have been a good
- 3:36quote. We're slowly building up.
- 3:38Lists of things that we could do, but they all look terrible
- 3:42on shirts. Yes, I showed Kai the other day.
- 3:45I have a list of probably 50 quotes from episodes of our
- 3:50podcast. They're all very funny, but a
- 3:53lot of them I don't know how to make into a T-shirt.
- 3:55So we'll see. We got hung up.
- 3:58You can. Also do like mugs and stuff.
- 4:00What would big mug? I don't know of anything we've
- 4:03said, but I really want a mug that says World's greatest mug
- 4:06on it. Done.
- 4:08I'm sure that exists already. OK, well let's jump into today's
- 4:13episode. The movie we watched today was
- 4:17one that is very near and dear to my heart.
- 4:20It is 1987's The Chipmunk Adventure.
- 4:26Before we talk about what the movie is though, what are
- 4:29initial thoughts? Had people seen this movie
- 4:31before? Did you remember it?
- 4:33Did you enjoy your viewing? Yes, I've seen this movie
- 4:38before. I think we owned the DVD event
- 4:40when I was younger, but this movie is ups and downs families.
- 4:44I had no recollection of watching this movie and I
- 4:47generally say that that was a good thing.
- 4:50It was good that you didn't remember it.
- 4:52Or what did that mean? Yeah, if I had seen it.
- 4:55Good thing I forgot it. Yeah, as Chance has kind of
- 5:00inferred, a lot about this movie has not aged well, but I'm sure
- 5:06we'll get into that stuff. I can't help but love this
- 5:10movie, though. There's so many things that I
- 5:13absolutely adore about it, so it's one of those things where
- 5:16I'm willing to look past some of the problematic stuff.
- 5:19John, do you have a hot take before we get into it?
- 5:22Oh yeah, without giving too many spoilers away, I do remember
- 5:27watching this movie a lot. Enough that I feel like maybe we
- 5:31owned it on VHS in the big case. But yes, there's a lot of fond
- 5:36memory that goes along with it, and now watching as an adult, I
- 5:40feel like I'm able to appreciate or criticize things in a
- 5:43different way. Yes, we did own this VHS and
- 5:47chance is also correct. When I got married I upgraded to
- 5:52the DVD and I gifted the VHS to a friend.
- 5:57So the DVD probably still exists out of On the Farm, which means
- 6:02that we had to find some way of watching this digitally and
- 6:06there is not very good options out there on the Internet.
- 6:09Right now, 800 ads. To be clear, the website where
- 6:13we watched it, what was it? Every minute and a half you had
- 6:17to watch an ad. It was 2 minutes, 2 minutes.
- 6:19OK, Yeah. It's free.
- 6:21On Billy Billy with no. Ads.
- 6:23Oh nice. I do also have an ad blocker.
- 6:25Yeah, it's too bad to find out that there was a way I could
- 6:28have watched this without seeing the same Walmart Ad 40.
- 6:34It was really bad. It was a lot of ads.
- 6:36It was a lot of ads. OK, there's too many the.
- 6:39First surprise for me watching this as an adult was the
- 6:44realization that most of these songs are original songs and a
- 6:51lot of them are really good. A lot of them slap.
- 6:55I don't agree with you, OK. OK, even the girls and boys of
- 7:00Rock'n'roll, you didn't like that.
- 7:02I think the music is fine, it's just the chipmunks have the most
- 7:07grating voice in the world. Yeah, that's kind.
- 7:10Of with regular human voices that song would sound great.
- 7:14With chipmunk voices it sounds really bad.
- 7:17OK, well that's kind of the point.
- 7:19That's their whole shtick. Yeah.
- 7:22Maybe you have a badge? Dick.
- 7:24For those who don't know, Alvin and the Chipmunks, whether TV
- 7:28shows or movies, incorporate a musical component.
- 7:32So this movie's music felt like they had come up with an album
- 7:38and then had to somehow make the movie fit that album, but do it
- 7:43in a really poor way. So it's a lot of really odd
- 7:48lyrics for these little chipmunks to be singing to these
- 7:52adult women or these chipettes to be singing to snakes when
- 7:56they are in Mexico. They are singing to adult to
- 8:00women. I like you to hold me tight.
- 8:03You are too divine. If you want to be in someone's
- 8:06arms tonight, just be sure the arms you're in are mine.
- 8:09I like your lips. I like your eyes.
- 8:11Do you like my hips to hypnotize you?
- 8:14So that was the song, the infants or the small shoulder?
- 8:19Yeah, very odd. Chipettes, which are the girl
- 8:22chipmunks, sing to some snakes. Give me a clue.
- 8:25Tell me what I need to do to get lucky with you.
- 8:29Getting lucky, getting lucky is really what it's all about.
- 8:34I mean, to be fair to the chipmunks, they aren't really
- 8:37children, and they aren't really chipmunks either.
- 8:40I don't really know what they are.
- 8:42For all we know, it's fine. Balls of play DoH.
- 8:45Yeah, they kind of look like an unfinished Muppet.
- 8:48Kai, you're proposing that this distinction between adult and
- 8:53child doesn't really apply to them, but.
- 8:55We don't know what vast storage of years of knowledge these
- 8:58aliens have because. They're like a.
- 9:02Trillion years old. Along with the fluffy.
- 9:05Yeah. I mean, they kind of look a
- 9:06little similar. They do like a sub.
- 9:08Species. The subspecies.
- 9:11It's like how? Ants.
- 9:12Will have drones or soldiers. Exactly.
- 9:16So the most famous song sung in this movie and one that is not
- 9:22an original for this movie is the one sung by Miss Miller who
- 9:27sings Witch Doctor and I have a sneaking suspicion that some
- 9:33people did some homework or some studying.
- 9:36So does anyone want to tell us why that song is in the movie?
- 9:42Can't you take this or me? I did not study this.
- 9:47Isn't Witch doctor a month song? Kind of, yeah.
- 9:51So what happened was a guy named Ross Begdesarian sang the song
- 9:58Witch Doctor back in the 1950s and he wanted to give a fun
- 10:05sound in the background so he speed up his voice to make
- 10:10himself sound funny for the Ting Tang Walla Walla Bing Bang.
- 10:17And it had this weird high pitched sound when he speed it
- 10:22up. So he thought it would be funny
- 10:25to make songs entirely in that voice.
- 10:29That's where he burst the concept of the Chipmunks, so in
- 10:351958 used a synonym for his own name, calling himself Dave
- 10:42Seville. He created a band called Dave
- 10:46Seville and the Chipmunks where he got way more notoriety and
- 10:51fame altering his voice than he ever did as a traditional
- 10:57musician. So the song Witch Doctor is
- 11:01actually, if you want to get real technical, the first Alvin
- 11:06and the Chipmunks song. Weird, weird, Weird.
- 11:10So yeah, he created them back in 1958.
- 11:14And you guys, there is so much chipmunk stuff, like all the
- 11:23research, you could do a ton of deep dives.
- 11:25We could do an entire season on chipmunk content.
- 11:31So I'm not going to go too deep into it in case we ever revisit
- 11:37something else this Alvin and the Chipmunks.
- 11:39I don't want to do what I did with the sequels to Land Before
- 11:43Time, where I did all my research and burned through it
- 11:47all in Land Before Time 3, only for us to go back to that well
- 11:52over and over again. Do you know why they switched to
- 11:55Alvin and the Chipmunks instead of Dave Siddell?
- 11:57I think it was just overtime they took the focus more and
- 12:02more off of him. Like a John Arbuckle Garfield
- 12:06situation. Yeah.
- 12:08A lot of the other things too, like the Ghostbusters were very
- 12:12famous when I was young, but then they got their own cartoon
- 12:17series called The Real Ghostbusters and a couple
- 12:20seasons in it was renamed Slimer and the Ghostbusters.
- 12:25They would find out what was actually popular about these
- 12:28properties and shine the light on that.
- 12:31Realistically, Dave's character was just the straight man, and
- 12:36so he became less and less necessary as time went on.
- 12:41For people that have an understanding of what Alvin and
- 12:43the Chipmunks is, if they've never heard of it before, is it
- 12:46a cartoon? Is it live action?
- 12:48Oh well, you know what we haven't done at all is we
- 12:50haven't done a summary of this episode.
- 12:53So, chance, do you want to tag in and tell us what the Chipmunk
- 12:57Adventure is? Sure, I can do that.
- 13:00The chipmunk adventure stars are 6 protagonists, Calvin,
- 13:05Theodore, Simon, Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor, two
- 13:08different trios, boy chipmunks and female chipmunks.
- 13:12They are approached by two villainous ne'er dwells, Klaus
- 13:15and Claudia, who are essentially getting diamonds across the
- 13:19world and getting their money and using these six children to
- 13:23be their Gopher without realizing it, and they tricked
- 13:26them into doing this by staging a race around the world.
- 13:29However, partly through, the chipmunks realize their
- 13:32situation and then have to defeat Klaus and Claudia before
- 13:36they continue on in their villainous crimes.
- 13:38To be clear, these six childlike chipmunks are anthropomorphic.
- 13:44They wear clothing, glasses, have hairstyles.
- 13:49But everyone else in the movie apart from a pet dog who acts
- 13:54like a regular dog and doesn't talk English, everyone else is
- 13:58human beings and no one really treats the chipmunks like
- 14:02they're different. It's not like, oh this is weird,
- 14:05the chipmunks just are treated like regular human kids.
- 14:08I don't even know if they're referred to as chipmunks other
- 14:11than a title like they are the chipmunks and the chip ads.
- 14:15I don't think anybody ever says, oh, look at those chipmunks.
- 14:18That's an interesting point, John.
- 14:21They aren't like the other animals in this world.
- 14:26Like there's a Penguin, there's a lot of Penguins, but even
- 14:30though they can make snowballs, that is the closest thing that
- 14:34they are to anthropomorphic. Like you said, there's a shark.
- 14:39There's various creatures in the world, but none of them can
- 14:44speak or wear glasses. So it does beg the question,
- 14:49what are these creatures and if they are chipmunks?
- 14:54Chipmunks, how old do they live? Like 5 years?
- 14:57Six years typically, and they're quite small.
- 15:01These creatures are the size of small children, so they must
- 15:06they. Don't have tail.
- 15:07At least they don't have right. They aren't chipmunks, whatever
- 15:11these things are. They've been lying to us.
- 15:15They have my number one note in my notes list.
- 15:18It just says do not look like chipmunks in all caps.
- 15:22Maybe it's like like the Transformers arrived and this
- 15:25was the way they were able to camouflage.
- 15:28Oh, look at that normal chipmunk child.
- 15:30Yeah, of. Course.
- 15:32In real life, there are chipmunks walking all around us
- 15:34and we have no idea. Yeah.
- 15:36Is that the implication? I think this really more begs
- 15:38the question who the real villains of this movie are,
- 15:42right? Klaus and Claudia have been
- 15:44fooled just like the rest of us. Yeah, I think the chipmunk trio,
- 15:50Alvin, Simon and Theodore, I think they make for a really fun
- 15:55collection of personalities. I agree.
- 15:58Alvin likes to get into trouble. He's always seeking attention
- 16:02and excitement. Simon is kind of the intelligent
- 16:07one, but also sarcastic. He tends to say what the
- 16:10viewer's thinking and all the worst stuff happens to him.
- 16:14Or Theodore is just like a little cute butterball.
- 16:17Cute, but kind of useless otherwise.
- 16:19And a poker. And I actually thought, I don't
- 16:23know why this came to my mind. I was explaining the movie to a
- 16:26friend and I was like, I don't know.
- 16:27The Chipmunks are kind of like Bart Simpson, Martin Prince, and
- 16:32Ralph Wiggum from The Simpsons. That would actually be a fun
- 16:36lineup though. Can you imagine if they did
- 16:39Simpsons episodes about those three together all the time?
- 16:45I mean, it's been out for a long time.
- 16:47They probably have. You know there.
- 16:48Might have been an episode where they went camping together.
- 16:51Ralph is one of my all times from Simpsons, so that does
- 16:56speak really highly of Theodore. He's just a little porker who
- 17:00just can't get the food that he wants at any given time.
- 17:05Honestly, Simon was my favorite. He was hilarious and I couldn't
- 17:11help but laugh at everything going wrong to him.
- 17:14He's like the responsible one who seems to get all the
- 17:17consequences of his brother's actions.
- 17:20He's such a stick. It's like if Leonardo got pied
- 17:23in the face every time he. Yeah, and I think you hit on
- 17:28something there, John. There's a lot wrong with this
- 17:31movie. It meanders in some weird ways.
- 17:35There's a lot of stuff that if this movie were made now, would
- 17:40straight up be considered racist.
- 17:45These creatures, whatever they are in some weird ways with the
- 17:50music, but 100% Simon, Theodore, and Elvin in this movie are all
- 17:57very funny and very fun to watch.
- 18:00I might be romanticizing this a little bit, like I'd have to
- 18:04watch some of their other stuff nowadays, but I think that this
- 18:08movie does those 3 the best of any movies that have come out.
- 18:14All three characters are very likable for different reasons.
- 18:18Yeah, I thought that was a hilarious moment where they're
- 18:21traveling between these different countries and in this
- 18:23one country, Theodore, the most simple minded one, gets elevated
- 18:28to God like status for a time. And then Alvin and Simon are
- 18:32forced to worship and follow his commands, which I thought was
- 18:35just like a really fun way of positioning the characters.
- 18:38Yeah. Did you guys notice anything in
- 18:42the quality of animation? I thought it was surprisingly.
- 18:45Good, I actually had a note about that.
- 18:47I liked a lot how active everyone was.
- 18:50They were very expressive. The chipmunks, of course, have a
- 18:54lot of movement. But like, I just liked.
- 18:56Looking at Klaus and Claudia the whole time, it was almost a
- 18:59different animation. Style for the humans.
- 19:01Yeah, Klaus and Claudia look so slimy and just the worst, but
- 19:06they look so good. We're doing it.
- 19:08Yeah, it was really good. I already mentioned that the
- 19:10character designs are a little unsettling.
- 19:15They look very. Strange, I would argue bad.
- 19:18But the emoting that happens, the character expressions and
- 19:23stuff that the chipmunks were making, I was just blown away at
- 19:27how good the animation was. And I was like, there's
- 19:31something going on here. And sure enough, this blows my
- 19:36mind. It all comes back to 1 moment,
- 19:40one pivotal moment in the 80s. If I could remind you guys, take
- 19:46you back to the Black Cauldron. If you remember, Don Bluth got
- 19:53really upset that the animators at the time were not trying new
- 19:59ideas. And so he said, OK, I'm going to
- 20:03start my own studio. If anybody wants to come with
- 20:06me, let's go. Do that.
- 20:08And so a bunch of the young artists left Disney and created
- 20:13Don Bluth's animation Studios. And that really derailed Black
- 20:19Cauldron. Black Cauldron was in limbo.
- 20:22It took something like 6 years to make that movie and then by
- 20:27the time it came out, it was a huge flop.
- 20:30And so Disney has to unload their art department.
- 20:36They fire most of the the artists and where do they go
- 20:40this movie? Alvin and the Chipmunk.
- 20:42Yeah, that is wild to me. I was like, there's no reason
- 20:47why the animation is this good. I just couldn't wrap my head
- 20:50around it. It turns out it's because it's
- 20:52Disney animation, just not under the Disney umbrella.
- 20:57Just really cool. This movie is such a strange
- 21:02situation to me because I can see stuff that's glaringly bad
- 21:06about it, but then also there's so many unusually strong
- 21:11redemptive qualities that I just really love.
- 21:15Yeah, I have a couple facts left, but is there anything
- 21:18anybody wants to talk about? It was a really weird choice to
- 21:23put them in hot air balloons because I don't know if you guys
- 21:26know this, but hot air balloons are really hard to fly.
- 21:29And there no way to control where they go you.
- 21:31Can control where they go. Essentially wind changes
- 21:35direction at different elevations.
- 21:37So in order to go a consistent direction, you need to manage
- 21:41your height in which direction the wind is blowing.
- 21:44And so with the Coriolis effect, usually in the northern
- 21:47hemisphere you can only head east.
- 21:49Usually in the southern West there is a lot of room where you
- 21:52can, it's just a lot more difficult and a lot slower.
- 21:55I plotted the points as best as I could and they go 51,433
- 22:01kilometers in this movie. Checking normal hot air balloon
- 22:05flight, 40 kilometers is what I understand to be fast. 10
- 22:10kilometers is what's used for commercial flights.
- 22:12There's no speed limit to hot air balloons because they just
- 22:15go as fast as the wind can. But if they were going 40
- 22:19kilometers an hour, it would take them 53 days.
- 22:22To be fair, there is a longest flight light record for hot air
- 22:27balloons that goes 40,000 kilometers and that took 21
- 22:31days, which means that on average they were going 80
- 22:33kilometers an hour. So maybe, but it would be very
- 22:37difficult for them to get anywhere on a hot air balloon.
- 22:41Well, the hot air balloon is just the beginning of the
- 22:44problems with Klaus and Claudia's plan.
- 22:47They decided to give dolls full of diamonds for these chips to
- 22:54deliver. In a pirate ship shredded by
- 22:58sharks, these might be the most complicated drop off points of
- 23:03all time. I like the one that was in a
- 23:06blade of a windmill that takes some precision hot air
- 23:11ballooning. I want to point out that they
- 23:14show up to the House of Klaus and Claudia and they have dolls
- 23:17for them. I guess they made a whole bunch
- 23:19of dolls overnight. But then they fly Cuba and some
- 23:23ancient man who's like, take this doll that looks exactly
- 23:27like your friend. Where did he get that doll from?
- 23:29Did he make it? Did everyone make dolls?
- 23:32Because the point of the kids is to have Klaus and Claudia get
- 23:36the stuff because they can't deliver it.
- 23:38So they didn't deliver the dolls to everyone else.
- 23:41Everyone had to make their own dolls.
- 23:44The chipmunks are world famous because they're hideous freaks
- 23:47and everybody is so confused. You do make a good point chance
- 23:51that for people to exchange their dolls with these dolls,
- 23:55how did they get the plans to make those dolls?
- 23:58Or who shipped those dolls to them?
- 24:00Maybe Klaus and Claudia sent a whole bunch of empty dolls
- 24:04because that would go under the radar.
- 24:07Imagine going to the post office.
- 24:09I would look like to ship 80 boxes of empty dolls, 80 boxes
- 24:13of dolls to 80 different locations.
- 24:16In the midst of this big enemies master plan, it seems like
- 24:21there's another enemy in the midst, a guy named Jamal who
- 24:25sends his hench men to try and get these dolls.
- 24:29But it's revealed at the last moment in this movie that
- 24:33Jamal's actually a police detective, and these are good
- 24:37guys who are chasing the kids with their golden teeth and evil
- 24:41smiles. It's just like, what?
- 24:43Why? Whoa, whoa.
- 24:44Why is gold evil? What decides if someone has an
- 24:49evil smile? You think the movie was trying
- 24:52to imply that those were good guys all?
- 24:53Along well, I'm just saying if you can't look past their smile
- 24:57or their dental work, that seems like a you problem.
- 25:01Chance is it a me problem? I'm on your side, jawed.
- 25:06They did seem pretty aggressive also.
- 25:08They were really weird about it. If I was an Interpol agent and I
- 25:12saw some kids who have some diamonds, they've diamond dolls
- 25:16in their hot air balloon. If I saw them get off their hot
- 25:18air. Balloon go into.
- 25:19The water I don't know, I would check in the hot air balloon for
- 25:22the other diamond dolls and just wait on the surface OK and not
- 25:26go down to the shark infested. Water.
- 25:28I understand that, but what if in?
- 25:31School, an air tank and scuba gear so that he could go down
- 25:35underwater and not see any of the evidence.
- 25:38You said what if I saw some kids get out of a hot air balloon?
- 25:43Now I understand what you're saying, but what if instead you
- 25:48saw some weird anthropomorphic aliens climb out of a hot air
- 25:52balloon? And I would not get anywhere
- 25:55near them. I would not go into.
- 25:57The water seems like a dead trap.
- 25:59Sorry man, it's aliens. I'm not a doing this.
- 26:03There was another set of characters, the Penguin family.
- 26:07Oh my gosh, this. May be the most useless side
- 26:10plot of all time. I guess it's about the Chipettes
- 26:15finding their conscience, but they're captured by this Arabian
- 26:20Prince who's like 6 years old or 8 years old and.
- 26:23Then Eleanor decides she wants to eat a Penguin.
- 26:26Sandwich, yes. So as it's part of a pre
- 26:32marriage gift, they get a Penguin that's been kidnapped
- 26:36from its parents. And we know this because the
- 26:39Penguin has a necklace with a picture of its parents in it,
- 26:45who took that picture of these Penguins and put it in that
- 26:48necklace. I was going to.
- 26:49Say that some poacher was like, Hey.
- 26:52You know, be really funny. What if we took a?
- 26:55Picture of this Penguin's family kidnapped it and then made it
- 26:59wear the picture. You're right, that is really
- 27:06funny, right? So dumb.
- 27:11So anyways, the movie spends a good 15 minutes trying to rescue
- 27:15this baby Penguin back to its parents.
- 27:17No relation to the bigger plot, but they do get to sing a song
- 27:21about motherhood. Yeah, well, we don't know if
- 27:24they have mothers where they come from.
- 27:27Tim, I'm getting the vibe that you're we're in some rose
- 27:30colored glasses. I already identified that
- 27:33there's a lot of problems with this movie.
- 27:35That doesn't mean I don't still love it.
- 27:37I feel like Dave, that human who's kind of their adopted dad,
- 27:44he calls them sons, but they call him Dave.
- 27:49That is a step dad thing to do for sure.
- 27:55He really took a back seat in this movie.
- 27:57He was hardly in it. My favorite thing?
- 28:01Is when Dave sees a boy with a red shirt walk past him and he's
- 28:06like. That looks like my son.
- 28:08He runs halfway across the city and then when he ends up at a
- 28:11location where 2 hot air balloons fly away, he's like
- 28:14man, I guess he wasn't here. The guy is so committed to
- 28:18searching for his son in a location that should not have
- 28:21him, and then the moment that he sees something weird happen, he
- 28:25was. I guess it wasn't true.
- 28:27John, I cannot get over your statement about how he calls
- 28:31them son and they just call him Dave.
- 28:34Legit, that really does feel like he's trying to give dad
- 28:42energy and they're just like, no, you're not our dad.
- 28:47Someone made the comparison earlier to John Arbuckle and he
- 28:51does have that same kind of patheticness to him.
- 28:56Oh, John Arbuckle. Another side plot is that
- 29:00Claudia has a pet dog that doesn't really like Klaus.
- 29:05So these are the two villains. It's a very pampered little dog,
- 29:09and every time we go to see Claudia and Klaus, Klaus and
- 29:14this little dog have some kind of interaction where they show
- 29:18how much they hate each other. It never really pays off.
- 29:21It's just for the kids who are really bored of bad guy talk.
- 29:26Stupid mod ha ha ha which? To be fair, I feel like is a
- 29:34thing that happened in cartoons in the 90s.
- 29:38Whenever there's some kind of heavy plot conversation or the
- 29:41adults are talking and kids under 8 wouldn't understand the
- 29:45dialogue, the cartoon movie has someone being silly in some kind
- 29:50of way so that the adults can listen to the plot and the kids
- 29:53can watch the funny cute animal people have thoughts about Miss
- 29:58Miller, the babysitter of the chipmunks did like the.
- 30:01One conversation she has with Dave, I think that's funny.
- 30:05I just. Came to check up on the boys
- 30:07like can I? I don't know, can you?
- 30:10Yeah, because they're out on an adventure and she thinks that
- 30:13they're with Dave. Dave, get some sleep.
- 30:16But Dave thinks. That they're with her.
- 30:18Has anyone seen the live action chipmunk movies?
- 30:21I saw the first one. Sure I did when I was younger,
- 30:24but I. Think I've probably seen one.
- 30:26Tim, have you binged them? I would have taken chance to see
- 30:31the first one in theaters. I remember going to see it at
- 30:36the Lyric Theatre in the mall. Beyond that, maybe I saw the
- 30:42second one too actually in all honesty.
- 30:45But they pale in comparison to this.
- 30:49Yeah, I was doing a quick Google search of them and they're
- 30:52Rotten Tomatoes scores in their four live action movies range
- 30:57from 10% to like 21%. That is worse than I expected
- 31:05you to say, actually. Yeah, I just pulled up Chipmunk
- 31:09Adventure on Rotten Tomatoes and it's sitting at a clean 75.
- 31:16That means you could add up the scores of all of the live action
- 31:21Chipmunk movies and not. Oh my goodness, I'm doing that
- 31:26right now. Oh my goodness.
- 31:30They got the scores of 16/10/21 and 28.
- 31:35Totalling 75. That's incredible.
- 31:40With your powers combined. This movie became fractured and
- 31:46then the live action movies were made.
- 31:48They split up the Infinity Stones who had to be sacrificed
- 31:53to get the Soul stone for this. A good question or Penguin?
- 31:59Which Penguin had to be sacrificed for this movie?
- 32:04So John, you were correct. Production delays in this movie
- 32:08resulted in a number of additional stops in the tour
- 32:12around the world being cut. And that means the songs from
- 32:17each of those stops still made it onto the film's soundtrack.
- 32:22So if you're chance and you're like, how can I get more
- 32:25chipmunk music in my life? OST, there's lots more there.
- 32:31I've seen some people use an image from this movie as like a
- 32:35reaction image, which is wild to me.
- 32:38I've seen images from this movie before.
- 32:41This movie was not a success. We only know that it made $6.8
- 32:48million at the box office. We don't know what the budget
- 32:51was, but we do know that that was considered a flop for
- 32:55whatever it did cost. And I think that that's probably
- 32:58straight up because this was a Disney animal information studio
- 33:02doing the work It probably did balloon and cost.
- 33:07The only saving grace to this movie is that when it made its
- 33:11way to VHS, it sold very well. It did well enough.
- 33:16And in the home market, it opened the door to be able to do
- 33:20the modern garbage chipmunk movies that John already
- 33:24mentioned. All right, let's wrap it up.
- 33:27AI chance, What did you think about this movie?
- 33:30I watched this movie as a kid, so it was weird seeing things I
- 33:33recognized. It's like wasn't a super
- 33:36pleasant experience. I put this as a three or A2.
- 33:40If I put it as a three, I'm required to call it a good
- 33:43movie, which I don't think it is.
- 33:45Today I'm going to give it a two.
- 33:47I agree with John that Simon is probably the most.
- 33:50Fun character in the movie. He's a line.
- 33:53He's like, park the balloon next to the fountain and crash into a
- 33:56tree and he goes, like I said, park it in the tree.
- 33:59It's a fun joke. I usually like his dialogue
- 34:00dialogue. But the music is so grating and
- 34:05for as much as I like the animation and Klaus and Claudia,
- 34:08the movie is weirdly racy at times and just uncomfortable to
- 34:14watch. But I mean, you were gonna look
- 34:17for something to make fun of. I think you would have a gay old
- 34:19time. Kai, what about you?
- 34:21Yeah, it doesn't do anything better than other movies.
- 34:25Go watch something else. If I were to fix this movie,
- 34:28there would be a lot that I would need to do.
- 34:31You'd need to get rid of all the race stuff, fix up a little bit
- 34:34of the loose ends with the characters.
- 34:35I do think Simon is great. Theodore fills his role, but I
- 34:39think everybody else is just kind of there.
- 34:41And then finally I would make the music less annoying to
- 34:45listen to. John.
- 34:48This movie has a lot of really cute moments and fun ideas, and
- 34:54I think it came out at a time when stories didn't really have
- 34:58to make sense. People weren't really critically
- 35:01thinking, or maybe I wasn't critically thinking because I
- 35:04wasn't an adult yet, but ridiculous evil villain plots
- 35:09that don't make sense and ridiculous police plans that
- 35:13don't make sense, and nothing really makes sense, but
- 35:17everyone's OK with it. I think that's kind of fun.
- 35:20So I like that this movie just does whatever the heck it feels
- 35:24like, and it's really silly and it's really dumb, but I had fun
- 35:28watching it. Emily fell asleep.
- 35:32Thank you for adding that. Yeah, I mean, I've made my
- 35:35stance on this movie pretty clear, actually.
- 35:39John, you stole a ton of what was going on in my brain.
- 35:44So all I'll really say is that I think I disagree.
- 35:47Kai, if you take away all of the weird stuff about this movie, it
- 35:53kind of becomes a nothing movie. I actually like that it makes no
- 35:58sense that the characters have no rationale behind what they do
- 36:04and the science and the logic is all out the window.
- 36:08This is one of my all time favorite 80s animated movies
- 36:13simply because it is so weird. Pretty much what you said John.
- 36:18I appreciate that. They're just like, you know
- 36:20what? These are the rules of our
- 36:22universe. No ones going to tell us
- 36:24otherwise. Let's just have fun with it.
- 36:27I do love this movie across the board.
- 36:30The movie doesn't age well, but there's something special about
- 36:35it that I still absolutely love. And you can tell that care was
- 36:40put into it and that still holds up.
- 36:43So yeah, you can say whatever negative stuff you want about
- 36:47this movie. I acknowledge it and I agree.
- 36:50But also, I would watch it again in a heartbeat.
- 36:54So just some housekeeping stuff before we go for today.
- 36:59Our 50th episode is right around the corner, so we're trying to
- 37:04do as many fun things as we can to celebrate it.
- 37:08A friendly reminder that we have a pull up that is a head to head
- 37:13battle to help us figure out what the community's favorite
- 37:17episodes were. So feel free to hop on that a
- 37:21couple times and choose your favorite episode.
- 37:25Our next episode is our Christmas episode and we will be
- 37:31doing Miracle on 34th Street. I'm honestly not sure how it's
- 37:37gonna go. This is probably the most
- 37:40serious movie we have tackled for the podcast and so that will
- 37:46either go very well or not at all.
- 37:52Yeah, well, and to clarify, there was a 1947 movie of the
- 37:57same name, but we're watching the 1994 version.
- 38:01That's correct. This is our nostalgia, not our
- 38:04great great great grandparents nostalgia.
- 38:07This is our nostalgia, not the aliens who are pretending to be
- 38:12chipmunks Nostalgia. You know where people can.
- 38:15Watch that, do you? I'm looking it up.
- 38:18OK. Disney Plus.
- 38:20OK. All right, lookout for weirdos
- 38:24who are trying to trade you the opposite gender chipmunk dolls
- 38:29for the ones that you're trying to give them.
- 38:31Raise Beethoven. Don't forget to breathe in and.
- 38:35Out adventure, Jamie. Hold on, I was gonna say, have
- 38:40you seen my childhood? Well, thanks everyone for tuning
- 38:46in and we'll see you next time for Christmas Times.
- 38:51Bye, bye, bye. Bye.
