- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So let's talk about time sucks. Oh God, this is just such a big
- 0:36subject for people. Such a big subject because
- 0:40everybody has a different opinion on where they lose their
- 0:43time. What sucks up your time?
- 0:46And for most people, the initial word that I hear most of all is
- 0:50well, work sucks up so much of my time.
- 0:52Work just sucks up my time. And it may be very true that you
- 0:56have lots of things you have to do at work.
- 0:59But the question is, are you doing them and being proficient
- 1:03so that you can get your chores and your tasks done as quickly
- 1:07as you possibly can and then gain back some of your sanity
- 1:10and some of your time? And that is where the question
- 1:14lies. It's that these moments, these
- 1:17little things that we do, that we know are taking away from our
- 1:22productivity, grabbing the phone and scrolling on social media.
- 1:28Now I'm the first person to tell you I don't hate social media.
- 1:32I think it's wonderful. I have friends all over the
- 1:34world that I made while I worked for Tony Robbins for so long,
- 1:37and I will tell you, for me, that is such a great way to
- 1:41connect with them. The other night I had such a
- 1:43gift because I got to connect with somebody who commented on a
- 1:47post of another person that we both mutually knew.
- 1:50I saw his name. I immediately thought reach out
- 1:53to him on Messenger and he's all the way on the other side of the
- 1:57planet. And before you know it, three
- 1:59days later we're on Zoom having a call and he's talking to me
- 2:03about the podcast and everything else.
- 2:05And it was just such a gift. And it was a gift made possible
- 2:09by social media. And I love that aspect of it.
- 2:14Now, do you have to control the amount of time you stay on it?
- 2:17Yes. Do you have to put timers on
- 2:20yourself? Yes.
- 2:21Do you have to say I choose not to go down a rabbit hole and
- 2:24never come back out? Yes.
- 2:26Because you can't stay out there all the time because you're a
- 2:29real world. We don't live in a virtual
- 2:31world. We live in a real world.
- 2:33And that's what we want to make the best we can make it be.
- 2:36We want to curate things that are just wonderful for ourselves
- 2:39because none of us are guaranteed a certain amount of
- 2:41time. So we have to make sure that
- 2:44we're doing an excellent job eliminating the time suck of
- 2:48being on social media. Now, at the same time, our
- 2:51phones are our productivity piece for so many of us.
- 2:54For me, certainly it is. It's where I meet all my
- 2:56clients. It's where I record the podcast,
- 2:58it's where I video. I do everything from this phone,
- 3:02so the phone is always in my hand.
- 3:04I have to be very conscientious though, of what apps I'm going
- 3:08into and what's taking me away, where am I giving up my time?
- 3:12So if you've never done the time study, it's an excellent little
- 3:15thing to do. Now obviously the phone will
- 3:18give you that because you can look in your settings and
- 3:20everybody has different phones. So I'm not going to go through
- 3:23how to get there, but you can go through and it will give you
- 3:26where you spent, where you spent your time on your phone.
- 3:30Droids are different than iPhones, different versions of
- 3:32iPhones with different software. You have to make sure you go and
- 3:35look, but it will give you the whole layout of where you've
- 3:38spent most of your time on your phone and how many text messages
- 3:42you mean. You can find out everything
- 3:44about yourself and for those of us who not like to nerd out, it
- 3:47is really, really useful. So highly recommend doing that
- 3:52just as a check, But I also recommend sitting and writing it
- 3:55all down on a pad, because it gives you an idea of exactly
- 4:00what you're doing, and you can set a timer for yourself, and
- 4:04when the timer goes off, you're done.
- 4:05You walk away from it because there are some apps.
- 4:08Game apps are absolutely addictive, and while some puzzle
- 4:12games are excellent for your brain, at a certain point they
- 4:15take away from your connectivity of other people.
- 4:17So it's important to remember I don't need to constantly be on a
- 4:20puzzle app. Maybe I should put a puzzle on
- 4:22my table. Maybe I should do something
- 4:25different than just staying stuck in this flat.
- 4:29You know, as my Auntie Annie falls at the flat phone, you
- 4:32know, she's, she's in her 80s and she's just the flat phone
- 4:37and I love that when she says things like that.
- 4:39So being stuck there, yes, not a good thing all the time.
- 4:44Now again, we go back and say, well a lot of these electronics
- 4:48help us because I have an iPad with an I pencil and I draw into
- 4:51it and I use that pencil for taking notes and other things
- 4:55handy. But again, be aware this
- 4:59conversation is all about taking away the things that suck away
- 5:03your time and don't make you feel better at the end of it.
- 5:07Just like if you've got chores that you know are not the best
- 5:11use of your time and they make you stressed out to do them
- 5:14grocery shopping, One of those big things.
- 5:17A lot of people hate it. I personally don't mind it, but
- 5:19some people hate it. So go online and order your
- 5:22groceries and they'll have them all set for you.
- 5:25You pull up out front and they put them in your car.
- 5:27That time suck is gone. Make it happen.
- 5:30If you are privileged enough to be able to pay, to have somebody
- 5:33come and help you clean your house or work with things, do it
- 5:37because it is a huge help. It is a huge help.
- 5:40So you're not putting your time into something and you're also,
- 5:44you know, making somebody else's life better by helping and
- 5:48hiring them and letting them be exposed to somebody as wonderful
- 5:50as you and helping take care of them.
- 5:52So never mind doing that. I mean, that is just one of
- 5:55those things. I have some people coming to
- 5:56help me put irrigation in at the farm.
- 5:59I love that. Could we do it ourselves?
- 6:00Yes. But we're also helping them and
- 6:02they'll be regular help out here for me, do any time I need to
- 6:05hire somebody. And they're so excited about it.
- 6:07And I'm so excited about it. So find your path to getting rid
- 6:12of the time. Sucks, because I promise you,
- 6:14you will be happier. OK, my friends, I will see you
- 6:17tomorrow. Have a blessed day.
- 6:19Bye.
