- 1:25Okay.
- 1:25All right.
- 1:26So before we do that,
- 1:27can we introduce your mom?

- 1:32Okay.
- 1:32All right.
- 1:32We're going to come back to you.
- 1:34All right.
- 1:34All right.
- 1:35I love it.
- 1:36Caitlin,
- 1:36thank you for coming to hang out with
- 1:37us today.
- 1:38Thank you for having me.
- 1:38We appreciate it.
- 1:40So now you are from Middle Tennessee.
- 1:44Basically.
- 1:45Okay.
- 1:46I've been here a long time.
- 1:47Been here a long time.
- 1:48Okay.
- 1:49Did you go to high school here?
- 1:50I did.
- 1:50I went to Segal High School.
- 1:51Oh, wow.
- 1:52Yeah.
- 1:52Okay.
- 1:53Oh, you like local, local.
- 1:54Yeah, and Murfreesboro.
- 1:55I mean, Segal Middle, too.
- 1:58Oh, yeah.
- 1:59Okay.
- 1:59So I've been here for a man.
- 2:03I'm not gonna when I was going to
- 2:04school that wasn't built yet.
- 2:08Wasn't even in the plans.
- 2:11You didn't have to make a sound so
- 2:12old so fast.
- 2:13So I'm gonna I gotta tell you a
- 2:16story about how old I am.
- 2:18I'm in the restaurant yesterday talking to
- 2:20an individual about schools here in
- 2:22Rutherford County.
- 2:24and and I said that I said that
- 2:29Murfreesboro is divided up into four areas
- 2:33and I said you got black men and
- 2:36then you got the VA side and then
- 2:38you got Church Street and
- 2:43and the oakland side and he goes he
- 2:46goes you graduated from oakland didn't you
- 2:48and i went yeah why because that's not
- 2:50i wouldn't break it like that either but
- 2:52go ahead and he goes well because you
- 2:54didn't call church street riverdale side
- 2:57and i went oh yeah we don't mention
- 2:58those words yeah that's fine but also you
- 3:00said the va side oakland and the va
- 3:03are on the same side of town
- 3:05yeah but it's like the va seagull kind
- 3:07of area that's still the north part of
- 3:10town yeah but oakland's farther south sure
- 3:13so i just you're trying that section
- 3:15whatever oakland you got downtown you got
- 3:20downtown church street blackman and the
- 3:22north end of town that's what you got
- 3:24i was referring to it as because this
- 3:27has always been the blackman area and then
- 3:30that has been whatever
- 3:34I'm right thanks you're welcome you're
- 3:36always right no not always sometimes we're
- 3:39good let's get to Caitlin too much Patrick
- 3:42going back and forth all right so you've
- 3:44you you grew up in the area yeah
- 3:46so have you always wanted to do the
- 3:48music side of stuff
- 3:50Oh, yeah.
- 3:50I've been singing since I was, well,
- 3:53I've been singing since I was like three.
- 3:55But from what I recall,
- 3:57six years old is when I started singing.
- 4:00And I actually did like this recital thing
- 4:04when I was younger.
- 4:05I remember getting a like a little solo
- 4:09and I stepped out on you know the
- 4:11stage the front of the stage and the
- 4:13little lights hit me and you couldn't see
- 4:14anybody but I did my solo and it's
- 4:16just I swear I remember that moment and
- 4:18it's just it's what I when I realized
- 4:22that yeah I definitely want to do music
- 4:23for a very long time until I'm ninety
- 4:29very specific age and then we got Jonah
- 4:41the man the myth the legend all right
- 4:44what do you think about your mama singing
- 4:48She's a great singer.
- 4:50Yeah?
- 4:50She's a great singer?
- 4:52Mm-hmm.
- 4:53So can you remember a time that your
- 4:55mama sung to you when you were just
- 4:58a little fella that means more to you
- 5:02than anything else?
- 5:03Um...
- 5:06I mean, I don't really remember.
- 5:09No, you don't remember.
- 5:11Okay.
- 5:12I was trying to give you a heartfelt
- 5:12moment there.
- 5:13Yeah, I know.
- 5:13He's probably like, well, I mean,
- 5:15she sings every day.
- 5:17It's kind of annoying.
- 5:19Does she sing every day?
- 5:21Is your mom one of those singers that
- 5:23just sings all the time?
- 5:25Yeah, definitely.
- 5:26So do you, do you, do you,
- 5:31do you like her singing?
- 5:35Yeah.
- 5:37Pause.
- 5:39He had to think about that one for
- 5:41a minute.
- 5:42No, see, I know what that is.
- 5:43As a kid,
- 5:44he was finding the moment of like,
- 5:46do I, the song I like, yes,
- 5:48I like that one.
- 5:49But then there's that moment when he's
- 5:51trying to video game and she's
- 5:52interrupting and he doesn't want to
- 5:54acknowledge it,
- 5:54but he doesn't want to say her singing's
- 5:55bad, but it's like,
- 5:57I can't hear the TV right now.
- 5:59So I get where he's at with that.
- 6:00So that's fair.
- 6:02So yeah, I'm right.
- 6:03That's right.
- 6:04I'm around kids too often.
- 6:04I know it wasn't a bad thing.
- 6:06It wasn't a bad thing.
- 6:07Not at all.
- 6:07Not at all.
- 6:11Love it.
- 6:11So Now Johnny you do some singing
- 6:14yourself, right?
- 6:15Yeah, you do more rapping than singing,
- 6:16right?
- 6:17You don't like singing So why do you
- 6:19not like to sing your mama likes to
- 6:20sing?
- 6:21Why don't you sing?
- 6:22Oh, I mean,
- 6:23I don't really know I don't like to
- 6:25sing but I guess it's kind of cuz
- 6:28I just like rapping better When did you
- 6:30first start rapping?
- 6:32um since like i would like um go
- 6:36on youtube and search up like beats and
- 6:38i would freestyle and then my song came
- 6:41out in so hang on can i ask
- 6:46how old you are i'm ten
- 6:48I love the fact that he's referring to
- 6:50the years like, I was doing like, yes,
- 6:54that is great.
- 6:55It wasn't,
- 6:56I was six looking on YouTube back in
- 7:01the day, such a appropriate.
- 7:03So thought response, you,
- 7:07you learned how to wrap off a YouTube.
- 7:10well no i kind of learned it like
- 7:12myself but i would like turn on beats
- 7:15on youtube and i would like to freestyle
- 7:17since he was very little we'd be in
- 7:19the living room and he'd put on a
- 7:21beat that he found off youtube and he
- 7:23would freestyle and it'd be so funny
- 7:26because every once in a while i'd be
- 7:28like oh
- 7:29Bars and then he would start spitting.
- 7:31I was like And then sometimes he'd say
- 7:34some crazy stuff and I'd be like, okay,
- 7:36yeah, yeah, and then he got good Yeah,
- 7:39it's so good.
- 7:41Like the song that we did together.
- 7:43He freestyled his part on my live video
- 7:48on tik-tok and I went and listened back
- 7:51to it and I was like that was
- 7:52so good and we wrote down the lyrics
- 7:54and then we went to the studio like
- 7:56I think the next day and
- 7:58okay yeah so that's a freestyle well i
- 8:01was going to ask whose idea was to
- 8:02come up with that so it really just
- 8:03kind of worked out to be a very
- 8:05organic experience yeah we were on my tick
- 8:07tock live and he was doing some freestyle
- 8:10stuff and then somebody commented you
- 8:12should do one with your mom and so
- 8:15i said okay well i have this song
- 8:16that i've been writing i had a verse
- 8:18and a chorus i said there's an open
- 8:20spot let me do my part and just
- 8:22freestyle
- 8:24then he ended up freestyling that and it
- 8:26was so good so it's we went back
- 8:28we listened to it we wrote down the
- 8:30lyrics went to the studio he he literally
- 8:32took one take i was like okay wow
- 8:34i've been singing since i was six years
- 8:35old i can't even do one take in
- 8:37the studio but cool and yeah this is
- 8:41crazy knock it out if you're good you're
- 8:43good so what's the name of the song
- 8:46it's called survivor survivor yep okay now
- 8:50and is that your current single
- 8:52Uh,
- 8:53it's one of my singles that is going
- 8:55to be on my country album.
- 8:57Okay.
- 8:57Um, but we released it in,
- 8:59I think January.
- 9:00Okay.
- 9:01Okay.
- 9:02And then you have a new album that's
- 9:03coming out.
- 9:04We'll,
- 9:04we'll get into that in a little while,
- 9:05but, um, let's, I gotta,
- 9:08I gotta hear it, man.
- 9:09Now,
- 9:09do you need your mom to sing and
- 9:11to start it out?
- 9:14You got it.
- 9:14Or you just want to just drop it?
- 9:16I'll get you a tag.
- 9:18I'm a survivor.
- 9:18Do it now?
- 9:18You ready?
- 9:23They all looking down at me.
- 9:24They said I couldn't do it.
- 9:25I'm going to keep on going.
- 9:26Now I bought an airplane.
- 9:27I just flew it.
- 9:28I don't even need another dollar,
- 9:30dollar or a bargain.
- 9:31I just keep on moving.
- 9:32Honestly, won't beg your pardon.
- 9:34Let's just keep on going.
- 9:35Now I'm running to the top.
- 9:37They can't even stop me.
- 9:38They're not even my real ops.
- 9:39And don't you forget this time,
- 9:41because I don't know their name,
- 9:42but they sure know mine.
- 9:44That's fantastic.
- 9:46I love it.
- 9:47I love it.
- 9:48Man.
- 9:49High five, man.
- 9:51That's awesome.
- 9:52That is great.
- 9:53Didn't miss a beat.
- 9:54She's just like,
- 9:55here's a little intro and go.
- 9:57So you freestyled that right off the bat?
- 10:00Yeah.
- 10:04well man all right there's just some
- 10:06people got more talent than others that's
- 10:08all there is to it i'm over here
- 10:12just cooking just cooking brisket big hunk
- 10:14of meat on the smoke it's so wild
- 10:20where do where do you where where does
- 10:22that come from
- 10:25Really know you don't know God God comes
- 10:28from God.
- 10:29Yeah, okay now You said country album.
- 10:34Yes, I
- 10:35Meaning there's other genres.
- 10:38Oh, yeah.
- 10:39There's a lot of other genres.
- 10:41It means there's not a non-country album.
- 10:43That's what you're looking for.
- 10:44So the question,
- 10:51are you breaking into the countryside and
- 10:54you do more pop, hip-hop styles,
- 10:59or are you always been country and just
- 11:03now really kind of calling it that?
- 11:05yeah i mean i started um so when
- 11:09i was little you know it was shania
- 11:12twain martina mcbride you know keith urban
- 11:16that was kind of what was on repeat
- 11:18and in my mom's car on the way
- 11:21to school and then when we would do
- 11:23karaoke i would do like martina mcbride
- 11:25songs and one of them was um broken
- 11:28wing and then uh
- 11:32Concrete angel.
- 11:33Oh my gosh.
- 11:33Those are my favorite to sing.
- 11:35So I've always really liked country music,
- 11:38but I Loved writing pop songs.
- 11:42So my first album was a pop album
- 11:45and
- 11:46you know,
- 11:47it did really well and I enjoyed doing
- 11:49it, but just,
- 11:49I kept having that little flashback of
- 11:52country music, you know,
- 11:53singing at the bars when I'm nine years
- 11:55old,
- 11:55my mom brings me into a bar and
- 11:57I'm doing karaoke and there's, you know,
- 11:59so I decided to lean into that.
- 12:02Um, and it, it was just,
- 12:05it started going really well.
- 12:06And I, I'm starting to like find,
- 12:08you know, what my, you know,
- 12:10voice can do and all that.
- 12:12But I also do, um,
- 12:14you know,
- 12:14rock songs like rock covers and stuff like
- 12:17that.
- 12:17So I don't really say that I would
- 12:19have a specific genre,
- 12:21but the one that calls to my heart
- 12:22the most would definitely be country.
- 12:25Okay.
- 12:26So, and that comes from your mom.
- 12:32Is she musically inclined as well?
- 12:34No.
- 12:35Okay.
- 12:35My dad's not either.
- 12:37Where does the music come from?
- 12:39God.
- 12:40Okay.
- 12:42To be honest.
- 12:43All right.
- 12:44Thank you.
- 12:45I love it.
- 12:45Yeah.
- 12:45Praise the man.
- 12:47He's the one that takes care of it.
- 12:48Right.
- 12:49Okay.
- 12:49So you started in pop.
- 12:53going towards country you got some rock
- 12:57you just posted something the other day uh
- 13:00you did a rock version yeah um love
- 13:05the way you lie and I was going
- 13:06to ask about that like okay first of
- 13:08all hugely iconic song I love it everybody
- 13:12knows that song you don't even have to
- 13:14be a Rihanna or Eminem fan and you
- 13:15know that song right
- 13:18What is the excitement or intimidation in
- 13:22approaching such a big song?
- 13:24And then when it starts to get a
- 13:26little traction, because I mean,
- 13:27like you're starting to get, you know,
- 13:29some views and stuff are really getting up
- 13:31on that.
- 13:32How...
- 13:34again because it's just an iconic song so
- 13:36so where where's that factor of i'm really
- 13:38gonna try to do this with a a
- 13:40rihanna song you know what i'm saying yeah
- 13:42so well i mean rihanna's one of my
- 13:45favorites too um i'm such a rihanna fan
- 13:50you know back from the ponder replay days
- 13:52all the way to uh lift me up
- 13:56so i really like her music a lot
- 13:58um
- 13:59And I think I would take it more
- 14:00of like as an honor to get to
- 14:02re envision somebody else's song that I
- 14:04really like.
- 14:06And of course,
- 14:06I hope I do it justice too,
- 14:07because what I don't want to do is,
- 14:09you know,
- 14:10not do what I feel like it deserves.
- 14:11So I don't really get, you know,
- 14:16scared to do it or anything like that
- 14:17sure some people might hate it and some
- 14:19people really love the fact that it's an
- 14:21iconic song that is re-envisioned into
- 14:23something different you know right so it's
- 14:25just like a different feeling um that the
- 14:28original song is very heartfelt you know
- 14:32um and then this one is kind of
- 14:33like we're gonna scream it in the car
- 14:34yeah you know so it's just different
- 14:36feelings to it what about the people that
- 14:40don't know that it's remake
- 14:42Because there will be people that don't
- 14:44know.
- 14:44Yeah, I've seen some comments.
- 14:45Right.
- 14:45Okay.
- 14:46They're like, wow, this is a hit.
- 14:49I'm like, oh, yeah.
- 14:50Yeah, it is.
- 14:53Here's your sign.
- 14:55You get a lot of songs.
- 14:56I don't want to say a lot,
- 14:57but there are songs out there that people
- 14:58play.
- 14:58Oh, listen.
- 15:00Greatest example I can think of just right
- 15:02off the top of my head.
- 15:03Tennessee whiskey, Chris Tableton.
- 15:05So many people thought that was his song.
- 15:07And what cracked me up was people would
- 15:08correct him.
- 15:09Like, no, it was George Jones song.
- 15:10And then you have to be like, no,
- 15:11no, no.
- 15:12It was a David Allen co song.
- 15:14And so like, you know,
- 15:15it went through all those, those levels,
- 15:16if you will.
- 15:17And so that's the unique,
- 15:19the first time I heard love the way
- 15:20you lie.
- 15:21I was like,
- 15:21that's the first it's very well done.
- 15:23And then you,
- 15:25you sit there and you think about it
- 15:26from the aspect of somebody's been here
- 15:28for the first time and not know that
- 15:30this is a, a, uh, right.
- 15:33A cover.
- 15:33And so it just is absolutely,
- 15:35it blows my mind from that aspect.
- 15:37But, um, I don't know.
- 15:39I've tried to dabble in like making songs,
- 15:45my own that are big songs.
- 15:46Yeah.
- 15:48It's hard to do.
- 15:49I think it's hard to do.
- 15:51It is for sure.
- 15:51Because you always hear the original.
- 15:53You know what I'm saying?
- 15:55So for you and your team,
- 15:57well done on that.
- 15:58Thank you.
- 15:59Because that's tough to do and to take
- 16:01it where that aspect is.
- 16:04Yeah,
- 16:05that's one thing that I try to do
- 16:07when I do covers.
- 16:10So I...
- 16:12did a cover of whiskey lullaby with drew
- 16:14jacobs and it was a rock version as
- 16:15well um and if you listen to it
- 16:19i really completely changed the melody of
- 16:21it i did it like a lot different
- 16:24um because i don't like to i guess
- 16:27do things the same because i do want
- 16:29to at least give it my own you
- 16:31know um
- 16:33I want to give it something that would
- 16:34be true to me too.
- 16:37So I do try to change a couple
- 16:39melodies here and there.
- 16:40This specific one,
- 16:42the team that I did it with,
- 16:43they kind of wanted it to be more
- 16:46of the original.
- 16:46So I, you know,
- 16:48I compromised a little bit.
- 16:51I was able to do that,
- 16:52but then I did some crazy stuff too.
- 16:54So, you know,
- 16:54I was able to give them a little
- 16:55compromise.
- 16:57That's awesome.
- 16:57Let's take a quick break.
- 16:58And then I want to,
- 16:58when we come back,
- 17:00I want to talk about
- 17:02a little bit of technology because I was
- 17:04in the barbershop earlier today and they
- 17:09had an AI station playing.
- 17:12Oh, stop.
- 17:14That will frustrate me too.
- 17:16Like they were taking some classic.
- 17:19No, just don't do it.
- 17:21And turning them in.
- 17:22You're just going to upset everybody.
- 17:24Yeah.
- 17:24All right.
- 17:25So when we come back,
- 17:26we'll discuss further.
- 17:30Hi, welcome back, guys.
- 17:31I'm your man, Charlie Eblen.
- 17:33As always,
- 17:33we have our illustrious co-host, Mr.
- 17:35Derry Wells, with us today.
- 17:37You're about to push the hot button.
- 17:39And I am about to push the red
- 17:41button.
- 17:44Sorry,
- 17:45we don't normally talk about politics.
- 17:47It's not nuclear codes.
- 17:47Did you see?
- 17:50You just hit the red button.
- 17:52It made me laugh.
- 17:53Did you see where Vance was talking about
- 17:58uh trump talking to somebody and he kept
- 18:00hitting the red button no when he was
- 18:03saying basically saying don't mess with us
- 18:05we're gonna blow you up and then he
- 18:06was hitting the red button and he kind
- 18:09of pushed the mic to the side and
- 18:11he said don't worry it's just a diet
- 18:13coke button oh stop and somebody showed up
- 18:16with the diet coke right as he was
- 18:18saying it you said hit the red button
- 18:21yeah anyways long story short go back to
- 18:25the ai so
- 18:27I'm in a barbershop and they're like,
- 18:29I caught it.
- 18:30Like I, I heard, you know,
- 18:33when you listen to Dr.
- 18:34Dre or M and M or some guys
- 18:38that have been in the business we grew
- 18:39up on, I mean, yeah,
- 18:41that's for years and years and years,
- 18:42decades.
- 18:43And you hear the beat.
- 18:46you you automatically know what it is
- 18:48right right and then you start listening
- 18:50to the the words and it's some soulful
- 18:56fifties you know soul music that's that's
- 19:02singing chronic how did this happen
- 19:09That's what it should be though.
- 19:11It should only be for comedic purposes.
- 19:13It, it frustrates me.
- 19:16And I, I had like, I'm, I'm,
- 19:19I'm already getting worked up.
- 19:20I see it.
- 19:21It frustrates me because when you do that,
- 19:24when, when,
- 19:25when you step in with AI for any
- 19:27sort of artistry, whether it's we're,
- 19:29we're talking graphic arts, painting,
- 19:32anything like that, music,
- 19:35anything where the talent has to be
- 19:36developed, grown, whatever.
- 19:38You're taking away from what the heart of
- 19:40it all is.
- 19:42And that just, and, and I don't.
- 19:45I don't get paid for it.
- 19:46I'm not trying to make a living doing
- 19:47it.
- 19:49I am like,
- 19:50it frustrates the heck out of me.
- 19:53I think there's a comedic level.
- 19:55Like if you could take, you know,
- 19:56a barbershop quartet and mix it with Ozzy
- 19:58Osbourne, that's hilarious.
- 20:00I don't want to see,
- 20:01as you put it,
- 20:02an AI station running this stuff.
- 20:06And because there,
- 20:07there are already bands popping up on
- 20:09Spotify that are fully AI and they're
- 20:12getting millions of streams.
- 20:15And here's how I think about it from
- 20:17the hospitality industry.
- 20:17All right.
- 20:19What are the servers going to do when
- 20:21we have a fully automated line?
- 20:22That's just dropping food at a table.
- 20:24You know what I'm saying?
- 20:25Your hospitality goes down.
- 20:27You can't talk to anybody.
- 20:28You can't greet anybody at the door.
- 20:29It's just, you show up,
- 20:30you tap on a screen,
- 20:32your food arrived at the table, you leave.
- 20:34And like, you see what I'm saying?
- 20:36And I know that's a little bit of
- 20:36a fetch, but like, how much of,
- 20:39how much of the,
- 20:40of technology do you see changing music?
- 20:46I mean, you know,
- 20:47there was an AI artist that got a
- 20:50record deal.
- 20:51You know, it's crazy.
- 20:52It's an R&B singer,
- 20:54and it makes me mad because, you know,
- 20:56obviously I do know a bunch of incredible
- 21:01singers who, you know, won't even get the,
- 21:04you know,
- 21:05the light that they deserve with their
- 21:07talent,
- 21:08and then you have a robot coming in
- 21:10and taking over.
- 21:10So I don't know.
- 21:12That's a topic for me, too,
- 21:14that gets me worked up,
- 21:15and I don't even like thinking about it
- 21:17because it will eventually –
- 21:21take over and then it takes out the
- 21:23creativity.
- 21:24I love making music.
- 21:25I write my own music.
- 21:26I can hear melodies.
- 21:29So, you know, that comes from something.
- 21:32That comes from something that gives you
- 21:34these, you know, creative thoughts.
- 21:36And to just let that be taken away
- 21:39by a machine, I don't really agree with,
- 21:42but, you know.
- 21:43Is there AI technology?
- 21:45And I don't know enough about the music
- 21:46business.
- 21:47Derry's way more versed in music than I
- 21:50am.
- 21:50And I think we're both extremely amateurs
- 21:51compared to Jonah, let alone yourself.
- 21:54Yeah.
- 21:56facts you know jonah's killing it right i
- 22:00can't string three words together that
- 22:02rhyme you got a whole bar like what
- 22:05am i um are there things out there
- 22:08that that that help you
- 22:13With writing,
- 22:14with coming up with a different melody,
- 22:16with whatever it may be that are needed
- 22:23versus where people are creating an AI
- 22:26that are getting contracts with labels
- 22:29that any of us in the room could
- 22:32have done.
- 22:33No,
- 22:34I don't think that there's anything that
- 22:36you need AI for in music.
- 22:38Unfortunately, yes,
- 22:38people do use it all the time,
- 22:41but there's nothing that I would think
- 22:44that you would need.
- 22:45I mean, when you're writing,
- 22:47you have somebody who's incredible on
- 22:49guitar and they can do a guitar lick
- 22:52and that will bounce off the next person
- 22:55who's like, oh, well, I just heard that.
- 22:56What about this melody to go with that?
- 22:58And then you hear a melody and you
- 22:59say, oh, well,
- 23:00these words would fit really well with
- 23:01that.
- 23:01And then that's how the song gets created.
- 23:04And there's really no need for artificial
- 23:06intelligence to come in and, you know,
- 23:08have any part in that.
- 23:10So do you play as well?
- 23:12Not really.
- 23:13No.
- 23:15Beyond the ability to have like editing.
- 23:18And I will give some of that credence
- 23:20because it can.
- 23:21feather out some of those timing issues or
- 23:24some stuff like that and i'll give you
- 23:25that maybe just a little maybe for
- 23:27production sure production uh but beyond
- 23:29that um like she's saying because so many
- 23:32of those sessions where those writers are
- 23:34coming in or just people who learn how
- 23:36to jam
- 23:38It's just,
- 23:38somebody's just playing a lick and then
- 23:41all of a sudden one looks over and
- 23:42he plays on top of that.
- 23:44And there's a whole song built because
- 23:45somebody was just hitting a little thing
- 23:47on a tune.
- 23:48And it's a beautiful thing too.
- 23:49You know,
- 23:50it's like so cool to watch it come
- 23:53to life.
- 23:54yeah I have a friend of mine he
- 23:56actually created the intro music to our
- 23:59show he's been on the show he's a
- 24:01producer here in town his name's Tim Hill
- 24:04he's the guru I love him to death
- 24:07Tim's amazing he's probably one of my best
- 24:09friends he's awesome he's really good dude
- 24:14I'll see him in the morning I will
- 24:21I called him and said, Hey, man,
- 24:24I need some intro music to my show.
- 24:27Can you create something for me?
- 24:29And he was like, Yeah,
- 24:30what do you want?
- 24:32And I said, I'm thinking like, Eminem,
- 24:37Johnny Cash, and ESPN, all mixed together.
- 24:44And he says,
- 24:46okay can you imagine give me three things
- 24:50that are not related and i'll try to
- 24:52make them fit right i love it but
- 24:54he did it but he came back it
- 24:56sounds so good right like ten minutes
- 24:59later it was like here you go yeah
- 25:02literally i mean he sent me he sent
- 25:04me something back ten minutes later and
- 25:05was like how's this sound
- 25:07Okay.
- 25:09And I'm like, oh, okay.
- 25:12But it's his mind works differently.
- 25:16Right.
- 25:18And I can hear it catching.
- 25:19That's right.
- 25:19And we talk about it all the time.
- 25:21Like the technology today has changed so
- 25:27much to where.
- 25:30our new generation are coming up,
- 25:33and I would have never at ten gotten
- 25:36on YouTube.
- 25:38I mean, YouTube wasn't a thing then, but,
- 25:41you know.
- 25:43Make us sound older, Charlie.
- 25:44We had the yellow pages.
- 25:47Yeah.
- 25:48But back when AOL dial up was still
- 25:51coming around.
- 25:51That was, that was, yeah,
- 25:55they finally cut that off like a month
- 25:57ago.
- 25:57I heard.
- 25:58Yeah.
- 25:58They, they finally, so, um,
- 26:01and run two sticks,
- 26:02get somebody's attention question for
- 26:04Caitlin here.
- 26:05Okay.
- 26:06When it comes to the AI and maybe
- 26:07even you from the technology standpoint,
- 26:09cuz I got it from the ethics side
- 26:12of it.
- 26:13Who owns the AI,
- 26:15who owns that artist that comes in,
- 26:18who owns the rights to that music?
- 26:20You see what I'm saying?
- 26:21Because it,
- 26:22or is it just from a created?
- 26:24Okay.
- 26:25But you have to tell the AI what
- 26:26you want.
- 26:27I understand that.
- 26:28But my point though,
- 26:29in that comes to this,
- 26:31she owns a song.
- 26:33She owns all the rights to her own
- 26:34music and she can make money on that.
- 26:37And now we have an AI artist is
- 26:39just generating money for whoever.
- 26:43And so that comes to begs for me
- 26:46the question of when you have the
- 26:48creativity,
- 26:49when you have the things that are being
- 26:51built again, she,
- 26:53you said they've already got a record deal
- 26:54or whatever it is.
- 26:55How many people have been beaten down the
- 26:58streets of Nashville for ten, fifteen,
- 26:59twenty years?
- 27:01And they're still playing for five hundred
- 27:02bucks a night because they can't quite get
- 27:03that one little thing to catch.
- 27:05And, you know, and.
- 27:07Look,
- 27:07the music business is you think the
- 27:10restaurant business is hard.
- 27:11Oh, I can't imagine.
- 27:11I absolutely cannot imagine.
- 27:13Bless your heart.
- 27:14Yeah.
- 27:14How long?
- 27:16No, you don't work.
- 27:17as far as like a job's concerned, right?
- 27:19The music is your job, right?
- 27:21Yeah, I used to sell cars.
- 27:24But in twenty twenty, I thought, well,
- 27:27now is the perfect time to dove all
- 27:30into, you know, doing music.
- 27:31So twenty twenty,
- 27:34I just went all in for music.
- 27:37And twenty actually the end of twenty
- 27:40twenty was when we dropped God,
- 27:42we need you now.
- 27:43And
- 27:44um it became a gold record so it's
- 27:46a great song it's crazy so um oh
- 27:50yeah no i love it you know uh
- 27:51it's funny when he first sent me that
- 27:53we had you booked i was like
- 27:55don't know that i've ever really heard of
- 27:57a whole lot of her stuff and so
- 27:59i went and started listening i was like
- 28:00holy crap so now and that's actually a
- 28:04question i was going to ask i do
- 28:06almost all my streaming on one specific
- 28:09platform so i don't hear anything that
- 28:12comes on the radio anymore right i
- 28:14couldn't tell you the last time i turned
- 28:15the radio on
- 28:17uh you know what i mean so when
- 28:19you get a and we play every saturday
- 28:22morning on the radio that's great i do
- 28:25it through my app you stream it i
- 28:26i stream it yeah that's my point like
- 28:28that's what i that's what i was going
- 28:29to say so i go listen to our
- 28:31show that is my on the stream i
- 28:34listen to the stream and when our show's
- 28:36over i turn it off i'm talking about
- 28:38just having a radio on so you're getting
- 28:39new content right so new exposure
- 28:43how do you get a gold record on
- 28:45something like that if you're not sure if
- 28:47it's out there because i mean there's a
- 28:48lot of us that are starting to go
- 28:49towards just the streaming route how do
- 28:51they determine that gold record how do
- 28:52they find out hey there's this this girl
- 28:55coming up on the scene with we're not
- 28:57hearing new stuff streamed that way
- 29:00So that song just happened to be like
- 29:03a very lucky thing.
- 29:05It had a very important message and it
- 29:07came out at the perfect time and it
- 29:09ended up going viral on TikTok.
- 29:11Okay.
- 29:12So a lot of my songs that do
- 29:13really well are because they go viral on
- 29:18TikTok.
- 29:19I work the heck out of my TikTok.
- 29:21um god we need you now millions and
- 29:24millions of people use that you know song
- 29:27and heard that song um i had a
- 29:29song called you lied that one um resonated
- 29:32with a lot of people and it ended
- 29:34up going viral on tiktok it's fine it
- 29:36resonated with a lot of girls yeah no
- 29:39no it actually okay so when i wrote
- 29:42you lied
- 29:44It was, to me, like a heartbreak song.
- 29:48But the amount of people that took the
- 29:52message from that song as paying respects
- 29:57to somebody that actually passed away,
- 30:00insane.
- 30:00Because I didn't think of it when I
- 30:02was writing that.
- 30:04And it started, you know,
- 30:06I started watching people make videos to
- 30:09the sound and it was like in memory
- 30:11of this person.
- 30:12And I was like, oh my gosh, wow,
- 30:13they're taking this as a, like, you know,
- 30:16if I had one more day with this
- 30:17person.
- 30:18That's deep.
- 30:19Yeah.
- 30:19I never would have.
- 30:20That's how crazy music is.
- 30:22You just changed my whole day.
- 30:25Because like I said, I told,
- 30:26I was like, girls did that.
- 30:27You lied.
- 30:28Like you, you know, that's,
- 30:29that's exactly where, yeah.
- 30:30Yeah.
- 30:30Like you just, but you just nailed it.
- 30:32Like music is so interpretative and what
- 30:37one person will take something as another
- 30:40will take it totally different.
- 30:41Right.
- 30:41Exactly.
- 30:42that's crazy um you say you work in
- 30:46your TikTok and those that go viral what
- 30:49does that I'll say what does that look
- 30:51like we know what it looks like but
- 30:54when you're out there thinking hey if I
- 30:56can get this to go is it just
- 30:58a matter of post repost repost repost
- 31:01always include the sound always include
- 31:03the audio or is it hey
- 31:06here's me with my feet propped up after
- 31:08breakfast, listen to my song.
- 31:09You know what I'm saying?
- 31:10And like that kind of thing is a
- 31:11little bit of both.
- 31:12Is it just you?
- 31:14Like, it's funny because on your story,
- 31:17you posted while you're waiting right out
- 31:18here.
- 31:18Yeah.
- 31:19You know what I'm saying?
- 31:20And so like,
- 31:20so you start seeing these things as they
- 31:23come about.
- 31:25So,
- 31:25because there are some of us trying to
- 31:27get up and going and get to some
- 31:29of the, like,
- 31:29you've got quite the following.
- 31:31And I went and compared you and the
- 31:34followers that you have to some of our
- 31:35others.
- 31:37that we've had on the show.
- 31:38And you're one of our higher end as
- 31:40far as the people we've had.
- 31:42And so like,
- 31:43we're obviously trying to grow this and
- 31:46he's working the heck out of making reels
- 31:48and all that kind of stuff.
- 31:50How do you say,
- 31:51so when you say I'm working the heck
- 31:53out of my TikTok, what is that?
- 31:56it means a lot of trial and error
- 31:57okay it means that you never know what's
- 32:00gonna you know end up going viral because
- 32:03my song that i just released w made
- 32:05i was like oh yeah people are gonna
- 32:06love this they're gonna eat this up and
- 32:09you know it didn't do really well on
- 32:10my tick tock um and i posted it
- 32:13i got a thousand pre-saves like i worked
- 32:16that yeah and um
- 32:19And it didn't end up going viral.
- 32:20I mean, it did well,
- 32:21but it didn't go viral.
- 32:22And, you know,
- 32:23viral is millions and millions of views.
- 32:25Look, when I heard it,
- 32:26I would have thought it was going to
- 32:27go viral.
- 32:27I'm biased, but I like all my music.
- 32:31No, I really liked it.
- 32:32Oh, I did too.
- 32:32Look,
- 32:33I'm very skeptical on when people come out
- 32:35with new stuff, right?
- 32:36Because it's your brain, right?
- 32:39So what you think is in the moment
- 32:43really is,
- 32:44and please tell me if I'm wrong,
- 32:45but it has a lot to do with
- 32:46where you're at
- 32:48personally.
- 32:49Right.
- 32:49So what's going on in your life during
- 32:51that time?
- 32:51What's, you know,
- 32:53at least the artist that I've met in
- 32:54the past.
- 32:55Right.
- 32:55And please tell me.
- 32:56But, you know, like,
- 32:57where does where does a lot of your
- 32:59inspiration come from?
- 33:00Yeah, I mean,
- 33:03Sometimes it's about things that happen
- 33:06other times, you know,
- 33:09specifically for W made.
- 33:11Um,
- 33:12I was in a room with Ned Cameron,
- 33:15my producer struggle Jennings, um,
- 33:17Cole miracle and Bo Bailey.
- 33:19Those are, I mean,
- 33:20that is a room to be in so
- 33:22much talent in that room.
- 33:24And, um,
- 33:26And probably some hilarious conversations.
- 33:28I love it.
- 33:29And Cole had this idea of, you know,
- 33:32like, what about this song?
- 33:33Like, you know,
- 33:34don't put a girl through hell if you
- 33:35can't deal with the devil you made.
- 33:37I was like, sold.
- 33:38Let's write it right now.
- 33:41Did you hear it just go right then?
- 33:42Me and Struggle looked at each other like,
- 33:44that's insane.
- 33:45Let's write it now.
- 33:47So we ended up writing that song and
- 33:49it, you know.
- 33:50it was an incredible song i mean i
- 33:52have not dated anybody in a very very
- 33:54long time so there really wasn't anybody
- 33:56that hurt my feelings but it was just
- 33:57a great song you know no that's great
- 34:00i love that where uh uh where does
- 34:08the drive for you making music come from
- 34:11like where does that inspiration from like
- 34:14me growing up music for me was
- 34:19it was a place of escape, right?
- 34:21It was a soulful experience.
- 34:23It was a self-reflecting,
- 34:26and it still is to this day.
- 34:27When I'm,
- 34:31you ever see me in the gym,
- 34:33most of the time you'll see me with
- 34:34a hoodie on,
- 34:36I'm face down like I'm not here to
- 34:39talk to you.
- 34:39Right.
- 34:40Right.
- 34:40Right.
- 34:41I'm here to reset my brain for the
- 34:43day.
- 34:43You know what I mean?
- 34:44Like,
- 34:44let's get back to normal so I can
- 34:46go go people.
- 34:48But, you know,
- 34:50so where does yours come from?
- 34:52Where's the inspiration?
- 34:53What's the music side that really drives
- 34:55you?
- 34:56I just really like doing this.
- 34:58I can't explain it.
- 34:59I mean,
- 34:59I've wanted to make music since I was
- 35:03very, very little.
- 35:05And
- 35:06You know,
- 35:07I tried out for every singing show that
- 35:09you could possibly imagine from the time
- 35:11that I was sixteen years old till I
- 35:13was twenty two years old and I got
- 35:15told no, no, no.
- 35:16But I am so stubborn and I know
- 35:17when I like love something like I will
- 35:21figure it out no matter what.
- 35:23Maybe it's just because I'm stubborn,
- 35:25but I really love music and it's just
- 35:28what I've always wanted to do.
- 35:29Like, I don't see any other outcome,
- 35:33you know?
- 35:34If somebody said, what's your plan B?
- 35:38I don't know.
- 35:38I'll figure it out if that was the
- 35:40case, but I don't see a plan B.
- 35:41I just really like making music.
- 35:43Somebody text me this week.
- 35:44I just won't take no for an answer.
- 35:46Right.
- 35:46And when you realize that that's where the
- 35:49drive is,
- 35:51I think that has to do less about
- 35:53what the outcome is, whether it's music,
- 35:57hospitality, whatever.
- 35:59And I think it becomes more about the
- 36:01passion and where you're focusing in your
- 36:05attention is because how many of us are
- 36:07willing to be like, well,
- 36:10I was trying this and the, you know,
- 36:13and the third time you fail and there's
- 36:15no plan B or whatever, but you know,
- 36:17and so, um,
- 36:19that has really been resonating with me a
- 36:21lot here lately of just that idea of,
- 36:24I don't have a backup plan.
- 36:26Like, this is what we do.
- 36:27This is, you know, full-fledged ahead.
- 36:29And so I commend you on that because
- 36:33I can only imagine as having a,
- 36:37being a young mother and you're looking at
- 36:39all this ahead of you and you're thinking,
- 36:41all right, it's sink or swim right now.
- 36:43Like there is no, like, I mean,
- 36:45it just, it's easy when I say easy.
- 36:47I just, it is not easy,
- 36:49but you know, when you've got a wife,
- 36:50you've got a support system, you've got,
- 36:52you know, whatever.
- 36:53We are.
- 36:54It's easy.
- 36:55I wake up in rainbows and unicorns.
- 36:57You've never had a bad day, have you?
- 37:02Until the soda salesman shows up.
- 37:05I don't want to touch a nerve there,
- 37:06but anyway, so, but you know, it's there,
- 37:11there's just a different struggle if you
- 37:12will.
- 37:13And so I think that too many times
- 37:16we look at people and say, oh,
- 37:18well they're,
- 37:18they're internet sensations or they're
- 37:20social media sensations,
- 37:21or they've got this, or they've got that.
- 37:24And they don't see what all was going
- 37:27on behind the scenes.
- 37:28Why that was built.
- 37:29Because I mean, just like you, I mean,
- 37:30how you've just shared with me sometimes,
- 37:34but how many times it's that just soft,
- 37:37gentle rejection.
- 37:37Well,
- 37:38that's not quite where we're going just
- 37:39yet, you know, and,
- 37:40or you're about to sign the paperwork and
- 37:42somebody else swoops in and you're just
- 37:44like,
- 37:44you want to need a long bike ride
- 37:47that afternoon.
- 37:48Right.
- 37:48So I feel like he's telling my life
- 37:50story right
- 37:51But I mean,
- 37:53and so I think that's what interests me
- 37:55when you say there is no backup plan.
- 37:58Like this is what I want to do.
- 37:59I love it.
- 37:59And this is where I go.
- 38:01And so you're going to make it happen.
- 38:03And there's a beautiful element in that to
- 38:07want to stay in that.
- 38:08Yeah.
- 38:09And you got to love what you do
- 38:10too.
- 38:10There has to be some like love for
- 38:13what you do also, or else you would,
- 38:15if you didn't love what you did,
- 38:16you would not.
- 38:18you know go for it one hundred percent
- 38:20right even when all odds are against you
- 38:22and everybody's you know like oh no now's
- 38:25not the time or you're not ready you're
- 38:26not good enough you're not this you're not
- 38:28that but you have to believe in yourself
- 38:31so much that everybody there could be a
- 38:34thousand people telling you no but you
- 38:36know you know so i don't think i
- 38:40don't think you have a chance of being
- 38:41successful if you're not there
- 38:44If you're not at that point,
- 38:46there's a difference in being talented.
- 38:52and dabbling in something and trying to do
- 38:55it and it's not i paint a little
- 38:57bit but i'm not a painter right you
- 38:59know what i mean like because the
- 39:01difference in in you know i put it
- 39:04to you this way gentleman walked up to
- 39:06me yesterday i'm saying it's a smoker and
- 39:09he left and and as he's walking walking
- 39:12out of the restaurant he comes up to
- 39:13me and says you know what can i
- 39:15pray for you for
- 39:18And that's great.
- 39:18And I'm so blessed to have people that
- 39:22come in my restaurant that want to pray
- 39:23for me.
- 39:25But I simply looked at him and said,
- 39:26I said,
- 39:26the only thing I want you to pray
- 39:27for me for is for me to be
- 39:29able to continue to do what I love.
- 39:32Because if I can continue to do what
- 39:34I love every day, then I'm not working.
- 39:39I'm being able to make that positive
- 39:40impact in people's lives every single day,
- 39:42every day I wake up.
- 39:43And that's amazing.
- 39:46that's why i'm doing what i'm doing not
- 39:48to be rich not not to have some
- 39:51hang on but be famous or whatever right
- 39:54do you realize the wisdom of that answer
- 39:56though because in that think about what
- 40:00you do do the number of lives impacted
- 40:06whether you are, I mean, I,
- 40:08I know you had an event today with,
- 40:10uh, uh, Redstone and, and the,
- 40:13the first responders and stuff that they
- 40:14did, the veteran meetups that you do,
- 40:18the bite night rallies, what we did, uh,
- 40:21for the two young men with minutes wisely
- 40:23fleet, this is all, uh, you know,
- 40:26all rooted in and based around the fact
- 40:30that you own a restaurant.
- 40:33The wisdom in your answer there,
- 40:34I need you not just to flippantly let
- 40:38that go.
- 40:38The wisdom in your answer,
- 40:40I need you to pray that I can
- 40:41just do what I love,
- 40:43continue to do what I love.
- 40:46There is a level there that most people
- 40:48will never understand because they are
- 40:51still searching for what they love.
- 40:53I think that's the point, D.
- 40:54I think that's to Caitlin's point.
- 40:57If you're not there...
- 40:59If you're not to the point to where
- 41:01that means damn near everything to you,
- 41:05right?
- 41:06You know,
- 41:06like the only thing that means more to
- 41:08me than what I get to do every
- 41:09day is my wife and kids, right?
- 41:12Like it's wife, kids, work.
- 41:15And then everything else, right?
- 41:17Like that's life for me.
- 41:19And, you know, just like her,
- 41:20I'm sure the only thing that means more
- 41:22to her than music is Jonah.
- 41:24You know, like...
- 41:26You know, he's pretty cute little fella.
- 41:27She's got a little soft heart.
- 41:28Every time, she's like, oh, hey,
- 41:29you're such a mom.
- 41:31Yeah, it's great.
- 41:31I love it, man.
- 41:35Just wait.
- 41:35There'll be a twenty-one and not text you
- 41:37back for too long.
- 41:37I know.
- 41:37My poor mom deals with that.
- 41:40She'll text me and it'll be like three
- 41:42weeks before I answer.
- 41:43But I do call her every day, though,
- 41:44so.
- 41:45that you're fine then you're covered in
- 41:46that but like i literally last night i
- 41:48texted my kids and i was in a
- 41:49funk they one of them looked at me
- 41:52at mom's house and looked over go why
- 41:53do you look so angry and sad and
- 41:56i said i'm just over it all and
- 41:58like what and i said it
- 42:00all of it and i was just done
- 42:02right and they were wanting me to get
- 42:05specific i was not going to get specific
- 42:07i just it was a day and uh
- 42:09so we all hang out we do tuesday
- 42:10night dinner at my mom's house every
- 42:11tuesday so we're all hanging out we're
- 42:12doing the thing whatever and after
- 42:15everybody left hey guys love y'all thanks
- 42:19for hanging out it really helped me feel
- 42:20in a better mood appreciate it
- 42:23one daughter hearts it and that's it
- 42:25nobody and I was like Right and my
- 42:30oldest daughter hearted it nobody else
- 42:31anything and I was like,
- 42:32all right I'm a dad to young adults
- 42:35that I understand this That's a beautiful
- 42:45thing
- 42:46All right,
- 42:46we every show we do a segment.
- 42:50Okay, and in this segment,
- 42:53it's a this or that segment.
- 42:55And it's, it's called Mac, or beans.
- 43:00Okay,
- 43:00so you can't answer at the same time.
- 43:03Got to give separate answers.
- 43:06But when you go to a barbecue restaurant
- 43:09or really any restaurant,
- 43:10you get a choice,
- 43:11but barbecue restaurants, you always,
- 43:14you're either going to pick the Mac and
- 43:15beans or the Mac and cheese or the
- 43:17Mac or the, the smoked beans, right?
- 43:20Some barbecue baked beans.
- 43:23Which one would you pick Jonah,
- 43:25the Mac and cheese or the beans?
- 43:28Definitely the mac and cheese.
- 43:29Definitely the mac and cheese.
- 43:31You like the mac and cheese.
- 43:32Okay.
- 43:32I got you.
- 43:35All right.
- 43:35And you?
- 43:36Yeah, the mac and cheese.
- 43:37Mac and cheese.
- 43:38It's a twofer today.
- 43:39It is.
- 43:40We don't get many.
- 43:43Well, yeah.
- 43:45Oh yeah.
- 43:45Yeah.
- 43:45I was like, what,
- 43:46who are you counting over here?
- 43:48You've been involved in your messages too
- 43:49hard.
- 43:50Lightning fingers over there.
- 43:51I hear pick your paper and I'm like,
- 43:53what's going on behind you?
- 43:55You didn't know it.
- 43:58There are three bags waiting outside.
- 43:59So never going to live that down.
- 44:03Oh man.
- 44:08mac and cheese clean sweet i love it
- 44:10i love it especially it's good stuff if
- 44:14you do go to his restaurant you got
- 44:17to try the beans though like i just
- 44:19yeah anytime come on
- 44:23So with that being said,
- 44:27the other side of the Mac and beans
- 44:29is when you're making music in your
- 44:32careers thus far.
- 44:35Do you you said you liked writing pop
- 44:39songs to begin with?
- 44:41At this point,
- 44:42now you've dabbled in a lot of different
- 44:44genres.
- 44:46Is your favorite the pop or country?
- 44:51it's definitely country definitely come
- 44:53yeah definitely country I love I love all
- 44:56music it doesn't matter what it is I
- 44:59listen to a lot of like gospel music
- 45:03but for me yeah country music who's your
- 45:06favorite gospel okay so my favorite song
- 45:09is holy forever okay and I also like
- 45:14what an awesome God so probably Chris
- 45:17Tomlin I would say
- 45:23Was that you?
- 45:23Yes.
- 45:24You sure?
- 45:25Yeah.
- 45:26Okay, just making sure.
- 45:27From a pure talent standpoint,
- 45:31in that realm, that genre, if you will,
- 45:33CeCe Winans.
- 45:34Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 45:38Lady Cassine.
- 45:38Absolutely.
- 45:39She was gifted and blessed.
- 45:42Another amazing artist,
- 45:46Tasha Page Lockhart.
- 45:49If you haven't heard her, wow,
- 45:52incredible singer.
- 45:53Tasha Page Lockhart.
- 45:54I gotta take notes.
- 45:55Yeah, Tasha Page Lockhart.
- 45:56Here's how I take notes.
- 45:57I open up my Spotify,
- 45:59do a search so it saves the search,
- 46:01and I'll go back and look at it.
- 46:04So I will tell you,
- 46:08Jelly's new song or Brandon Lake's new
- 46:11song with Jelly Roll turned me on to
- 46:14Brandon Lake.
- 46:15Yeah.
- 46:17And I went, geez,
- 46:21probably months without even batting an
- 46:23eye and didn't even think about Brandon
- 46:25Lake.
- 46:25Right.
- 46:27And over the last few weeks,
- 46:28I started pulling up all of his stuff.
- 46:31He's a really good singer.
- 46:33holy cow the guy's got a set of
- 46:35pipes on him he can wail i i
- 46:39just was i was really kind of blown
- 46:40away at how like because look when you
- 46:44have a guy um that gets a cameo
- 46:48from an artist as well known as jelly
- 46:51is now right
- 46:54One,
- 46:56Jelly has a special place in my heart
- 46:58from long ago,
- 47:01so I listen to anything that he puts
- 47:03out, but then to have this guy,
- 47:06and it's totally opposite of anything that
- 47:09I would have ever thought Jelly would have
- 47:11done, sparked interest, right?
- 47:14But I was shocked at how good of
- 47:17an artist he is.
- 47:18Like Brandon Lake can,
- 47:19he's got some stuff.
- 47:20If you like that one too,
- 47:22if you like the hard fought Hallelujah,
- 47:25you will also love Jelly and Struggle did
- 47:29a song called Only God Knows.
- 47:33And I think like both of those,
- 47:35like the one with Brandon and then the
- 47:36one with Struggle,
- 47:37those are both two like incredible songs.
- 47:40Yeah.
- 47:41Struggle,
- 47:42I don't think Struggle gets the kudos he
- 47:45deserves.
- 47:46He's so talented, dude.
- 47:48His brain...
- 47:50one of the best writers ever like it's
- 47:52crazy he's crazy now he comes from a
- 47:55lot of bars he comes from a line
- 47:58of of pretty talented people right but um
- 48:02um his his his voice is just so
- 48:06unique yeah it's just uh and it's just
- 48:12it's just a very unique style you know
- 48:14i i love the music
- 48:16I think part of going to Brandon Lake
- 48:20and Jelly Roll and even yourself,
- 48:23a lot of these artists are beginning to
- 48:26not pigeonhole themselves into just one
- 48:29genre.
- 48:31And I think that
- 48:33think back ten fifteen years when Taylor
- 48:37Swift started to go from the country to
- 48:39the pop and everybody's like oh my
- 48:41goodness they're playing her on the pop
- 48:43station here in Nashville she's always
- 48:45been the country station girl and whatever
- 48:48and it was kind of this big deal
- 48:49and even back if you can go this
- 48:51far back I don't know if you can
- 48:53but like you know Garth Brooks tried to
- 48:55do the the Chris Gaines crossover thing
- 48:57right is that a jab
- 48:58No, you've made references that were old,
- 49:00twelve times a day.
- 49:01I figured out the one in there.
- 49:02All right.
- 49:03But anyway, but, you know,
- 49:06like there's been this where it was always
- 49:08a crossover, right?
- 49:09You had to do one or the other.
- 49:11You couldn't do.
- 49:12And now I think a lot of artists,
- 49:14generally speaking,
- 49:15but definitely some of these more
- 49:17mainstream artists are holding their own.
- 49:22doing a little bit of both and dabbling
- 49:24I mean cuz I've never understood why we
- 49:26why we've always put people like I mean
- 49:29look I think I think the industry forced
- 49:32it I think that's what happened and I
- 49:33think now you've got people who were
- 49:35saying wait a minute I'm a creator let
- 49:37me create don't don't tell me I have
- 49:39to do this it's like people like Caitlin
- 49:41that I mean her your voice is amazing
- 49:44and can go across multiple different
- 49:46genres without an issue right
- 49:49you know, I think, you know,
- 49:51like there's people,
- 49:52I do think there's people out there that,
- 49:54They're probably gonna be, you know,
- 49:56Tim McGraw is probably gonna stay in the
- 49:59countryside.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:00Yeah.
- 50:01Conway Twitty is probably gonna be
- 50:03country.
- 50:04Well, he, he's no longer with us.
- 50:05So you're probably right.
- 50:06So yes, you understand.
- 50:07I don't think he's putting out any new
- 50:08music.
- 50:09Jeez.
- 50:09That's fine.
- 50:13I had Conway Twitty pop up like three
- 50:14times in my playlist today.
- 50:15I was like, yes, well done Spotify.
- 50:18Like finally, but you,
- 50:20you look at guys like Morgan Wallen.
- 50:21Here's what I think is funny.
- 50:23you can have someone like him who'll have
- 50:24at one time ten songs on the billboard
- 50:26and like he's just crushing everything he
- 50:28touches and then you get somebody like
- 50:30eric church who is one of my favorites
- 50:33but because his crossover is more rock and
- 50:35not more pop he doesn't get a whole
- 50:37lot of the the fanfare the flair you
- 50:39know what i'm saying and but it's still
- 50:41quote a crossover and so i think some
- 50:43of these guys are real unique also there's
- 50:47a part of me that gets
- 50:50doesn't appreciate the,
- 50:53that everybody has a collab or feature.
- 50:55Oh, so-and-so featuring so-and-so.
- 50:58And part of me wants to say, well,
- 50:59you're just trying to be relevant.
- 51:00You're trying to bring somebody on or try
- 51:01to do this, try to do that, whatever,
- 51:03which I get.
- 51:03But also the flip side of that,
- 51:05I look at Zach Bryan.
- 51:06He had a couple of like, well,
- 51:08he had a war entreaty.
- 51:10and like i can't remember the guy's name
- 51:12from warren treaty but that man can sing
- 51:16the phone book yeah for as far as
- 51:18i'm concerned and you know so there is
- 51:21a lot of this this they don't want
- 51:23to be defined because ultimately they're
- 51:26artists they want to create whatever your
- 51:30heart your mind your soul is putting out
- 51:32why does it have to be here
- 51:34If you write a song, you know,
- 51:35based on what was in a conversation,
- 51:38a struggle, you know,
- 51:39in the record studio or the one where
- 51:42I got this bad breakup,
- 51:44both of those are just as equally.
- 51:49I agree.
- 51:49Content creating, you know, if you will.
- 51:52So no, I definitely agree with that.
- 51:53I think, you know,
- 51:55I don't think anybody should be put into
- 51:56a box unless that that's what they want
- 51:58to do is they want to only make
- 51:59country music.
- 52:00But for, you know,
- 52:04struggle, rap, now country.
- 52:08Jelly Roll, incredible.
- 52:10He was rapping country music.
- 52:11He did rock, I believe.
- 52:14So I like to do all genres.
- 52:18I don't know.
- 52:18I think it's just fun.
- 52:19I think it's more of like you get
- 52:20to experiment with different sounds and
- 52:22different instruments and different
- 52:25melodies.
- 52:26So whatever you're feeling.
- 52:28Some days I like to sing really,
- 52:29really low and I don't want to hit
- 52:31a high note.
- 52:32And then other days I want to sing
- 52:33like Amy Lee, you know?
- 52:35Amy Lee.
- 52:35There's going to be people who don't know
- 52:39who that reference is,
- 52:40and that makes me feel good.
- 52:42That's awesome.
- 52:42All right, Jonah,
- 52:43you said earlier that you like to rap
- 52:47more than anything else.
- 52:48Yeah.
- 52:48All right, so who's your favorite rapper?
- 52:52Oh.
- 52:53Good question.
- 52:55I mean, I kind of like Kendrick Lamar.
- 53:00you like Lamar okay who do you think
- 53:02is the best rapper of all time probably
- 53:10like
- 53:13Snoop Dogg.
- 53:14Snoop.
- 53:14All right, little Snoop Dogg.
- 53:19All right.
- 53:20Okay.
- 53:21Now, do you?
- 53:23I see that you're wearing a Patriot shirt.
- 53:25Yeah.
- 53:26So you like football?
- 53:28Yep.
- 53:28Basketball?
- 53:30No.
- 53:31No.
- 53:32All right.
- 53:32He's a big football fan.
- 53:34Big football fan.
- 53:34He's so smart.
- 53:36Like he can name like almost any stadium.
- 53:38It's crazy.
- 53:40really okay stadium with the lowest
- 53:43attendance currently this year wow it's
- 53:48easy it's the time it's easy it's the
- 53:49titans that's the closest one it's the
- 53:52titans gosh man yeah that that and mtsu
- 53:55they're they rival each other that'd be a
- 53:58heck of a football game those two need
- 53:59to play each other right now hey i
- 54:01wonder if we called derek no don't no
- 54:04just and then who's the who's the the
- 54:07titan they don't have one
- 54:09Trent,
- 54:09it may as well be it could be
- 54:13right now.
- 54:13I mean, hey, there's an opening.
- 54:15There's an opening.
- 54:17So like smart with this game,
- 54:20they might like actually get some wins.
- 54:22Who's your favorite football player,
- 54:23buddy?
- 54:24Justin Jefferson.
- 54:25Yeah, all time Tom Brady.
- 54:27All time Tom Brady.
- 54:28Okay,
- 54:29why do you like Tom Brady so much?
- 54:31Um, because he was he was the goat.
- 54:34Yeah, but he, like, started out with,
- 54:36like, he wasn't good.
- 54:38Nobody thought he would be good.
- 54:40Sixth round in the draft.
- 54:43But then he got seven Super Bowls.
- 54:45So he's an underdog.
- 54:48He likes an underdog.
- 54:48Oh, he absolutely was.
- 54:49I mean, he wasn't a starter at Michigan.
- 54:51Nope.
- 54:51Was the third-string quarterback,
- 54:52I believe,
- 54:53at New England until Drew B finally got
- 54:55hurt.
- 54:55The sixth round?
- 54:56Yeah, sixth-round draft.
- 54:58Drew Brees gets hurt.
- 54:59It's the only reason he ever gets to
- 55:00go in the game.
- 55:01Bledsoe.
- 55:02not bruce it was a drew b yeah
- 55:04but drew bled so breeze was at uh
- 55:07new orleans well at that time he's in
- 55:09san diego listen he's gonna tell you all
- 55:16right well my time here is done were
- 55:19you looking for a co-host position you
- 55:22just talked yourself into one all right so
- 55:24uh
- 55:30what is your mother's favorite song that
- 55:32she sings what is your favorite song of
- 55:35your mother sorry i said that wrong um
- 55:37well it's one that's not out yet it's
- 55:42one that's not out yet yeah well said
- 55:44friend can he tell me which one it
- 55:46is yeah you could say the name of
- 55:53it i don't know the name of it
- 55:54i just know it's my favorite mom's
- 55:55favorite song i like um
- 56:00remember what like the words are god we
- 56:04need you now is cool you like that
- 56:06one yeah like that one that one's out
- 56:07okay all right um do we get a
- 56:11taste of any of your music tonight oh
- 56:14like a like a sneak peek yeah hmm
- 56:19well i don't have anything you know
- 56:23You don't have to,
- 56:24you can make everybody wait.
- 56:26We can get Trent to drop something in.
- 56:30I'm just asking.
- 56:31Well, okay.
- 56:32So I,
- 56:34the only thing that I have coming out
- 56:35right now is the, um,
- 56:38the cover of love the way you lie.
- 56:40And then I think I'm probably going to
- 56:44go through the rest of the year.
- 56:45And then my next song will be coming
- 56:48out next year, probably like February.
- 56:52And that will be the title track.
- 56:54So the album should be out about the
- 56:56same time.
- 56:57Okay.
- 56:58And can you tell us what the album
- 57:01name is?
- 57:04um i don't think so not yet i
- 57:07don't think so i have to ask because
- 57:10i would do it i would get in
- 57:11trouble it's what are you doing you have
- 57:12an album coming out in february yes don't
- 57:17hold me accountable to that so i have
- 57:21one more question about instagram tick
- 57:24tock facebook social media side um and you
- 57:30started
- 57:33jabbing back at some of the comments.
- 57:35I love it.
- 57:36So fun.
- 57:36I don't even know.
- 57:37Those are some of my favorite where she
- 57:39reads the main tweets.
- 57:40Yeah.
- 57:40I don't even know if the jabs would
- 57:41be right,
- 57:42but like I've wanted to do stuff like
- 57:44that for so long.
- 57:47for so long i want to like you
- 57:48know comment on the review that is just
- 57:51you know asinine or whatever right or you
- 57:55know like we had a uh the hermitage
- 57:57golf course in in mount juliet hermitage
- 58:01area um in hermitage they have a um
- 58:06it's not really hermitage i'm just giving
- 58:08you a hard time they they're they're uh
- 58:15director of golf answers the phone and
- 58:18makes fun of people on the phone.
- 58:20Right.
- 58:20And they put it on TikTok and Instagram
- 58:22and all this stuff.
- 58:23And it's hilarious.
- 58:24Um,
- 58:25so I've wanted to do stuff like that
- 58:27for the restaurant,
- 58:28but I've never done it.
- 58:30So my favorites when you have to do
- 58:32it.
- 58:35you should I'm here for it like you
- 58:37did you did one the other day about
- 58:41you know somebody asked you about glasses
- 58:42or your nose ring or something like
- 58:45everybody either hates it or loves it
- 58:47there's no in between they're not like oh
- 58:48whatever they're like why do you wear
- 58:50glasses you're so weird they're so big
- 58:52your glasses are ugly why do you have
- 58:54a nose ring in your nose like why
- 58:56do you care it's so weird but that's
- 58:58what like that's what I don't understand
- 59:00is why like who cares
- 59:03They care.
- 59:05It's not about who cares.
- 59:07Because you can look at someone and
- 59:10immediately form an opinion.
- 59:11And there's something you do like and
- 59:12there's something you don't like, right?
- 59:13As soon as you see them, right?
- 59:14Whatever.
- 59:14Yeah.
- 59:15my problem is is why do they feel
- 59:17the need to share it because they think
- 59:19somebody's going to care about their
- 59:21thought right yeah you can think whatever
- 59:23you want sure you know what they're going
- 59:25to say about me like that big fella's
- 59:27wearing black but he's trying to cover it
- 59:28all up yeah i am it's slimming okay
- 59:30that's fine but you know what i don't
- 59:32need you to do tell me about it
- 59:34i already know i'm doing it i just
- 59:35don't need you to put it in my
- 59:36face and you know what i didn't want
- 59:38your like you know what i'm saying but
- 59:42tell me i'm wrong like you know the
- 59:44best comment
- 59:47That big fella's wearing all black.
- 59:48That was great.
- 59:51So did you, my question is,
- 59:54did you just wake up and go,
- 59:55you know what, I'm going to,
- 59:56I'm going to spat back a little bit.
- 59:59They just, it doesn't, I think it's funny.
- 1:00:01To me, I think I crack myself up.
- 1:00:03Like I laugh when I watch the videos
- 1:00:05back because I think I'm hilarious.
- 1:00:08You are pretty funny.
- 1:00:09I think it's, I think it's great.
- 1:00:10That's why I'm asking.
- 1:00:11Yeah.
- 1:00:11So I know I don't, I don't.
- 1:00:13So, okay.
- 1:00:14You're going to comment something mean on
- 1:00:17a public page.
- 1:00:18Then I can use your comment publicly to
- 1:00:21say whatever I want back because you
- 1:00:23expressed your opinion.
- 1:00:24So now I am allowed to express mine.
- 1:00:27That is how it works.
- 1:00:29So I don't care, you know,
- 1:00:30and then it's like, well, you can't,
- 1:00:32you know, bully someone back.
- 1:00:34I don't think it's bullying because you
- 1:00:36commented first and I'm just responding.
- 1:00:40you're good you're good buddy so that's my
- 1:00:43thoughts on it and it makes for great
- 1:00:44content like I don't know what to post
- 1:00:47ninety percent of the time yeah so when
- 1:00:49I see a bad comment like thank God
- 1:00:51I get something to post today so if
- 1:00:59we truly believe in storytelling
- 1:01:03I believe that people aren't going to tell
- 1:01:05your story for you.
- 1:01:07You have to go out and tell your
- 1:01:08story and scream it from the rooftop so
- 1:01:10people can understand it because food
- 1:01:13sounds or food tastes different when you
- 1:01:16know the people's cooking its story.
- 1:01:19Music sounds different when you know the
- 1:01:22artist's story.
- 1:01:24When you can hear the pain and
- 1:01:28in the voice of somebody that you know
- 1:01:31went through a tough time.
- 1:01:34It means different things,
- 1:01:35like we were talking about earlier, right?
- 1:01:37So what advice would you give to the
- 1:01:42world?
- 1:01:42Because obviously you've done a really
- 1:01:44good job of storytelling.
- 1:01:46Your socials are doing very well, right?
- 1:01:49Derry alluded to it earlier.
- 1:01:52What advice would you give to someone that
- 1:01:53is just starting out and trying to figure
- 1:01:55out how to tell their story?
- 1:01:57Well, just starting out,
- 1:02:00like I said before,
- 1:02:00you have to believe in yourself because
- 1:02:03people are not going to believe in you
- 1:02:06until it becomes popular to believe in
- 1:02:08you.
- 1:02:11And if it's something that you really want
- 1:02:13to do,
- 1:02:13you have to love doing it and you
- 1:02:15have to know that, yeah,
- 1:02:17you might seem crazy,
- 1:02:19that it might take a very long time,
- 1:02:22you know, to make it work,
- 1:02:23but
- 1:02:26you can't go in it with the idea
- 1:02:28of, Oh, I'm going to be like,
- 1:02:30if it's music, you know,
- 1:02:32specifically music,
- 1:02:33you can't go in it thinking, okay,
- 1:02:34I'm going to be famous.
- 1:02:36You're going to, you know,
- 1:02:38bite yourself in the butt at that point.
- 1:02:39Like you can't go into it expecting any
- 1:02:42certain outcome.
- 1:02:42You have to
- 1:02:44just start doing what you love and to
- 1:02:45be true to yourself and to do things
- 1:02:49that are like of you and not,
- 1:02:52you know,
- 1:02:52don't write a song just because you think
- 1:02:54it's going to be popular.
- 1:02:56Write a song that actually like, you know,
- 1:02:58you like or it means something.
- 1:03:00who you are as a person, you know,
- 1:03:02you might think that you have nothing to
- 1:03:05tell because I had a pretty average life
- 1:03:07growing up.
- 1:03:08I didn't go through a lot of hardship.
- 1:03:10I mean,
- 1:03:10I had my son when I was nineteen.
- 1:03:13I knew I wanted to be a singer,
- 1:03:14so I auditioned for a bunch of shows,
- 1:03:16got told no.
- 1:03:18My parents moved me from Florida to
- 1:03:21Nashville to do music when I was twelve
- 1:03:23years old.
- 1:03:24So they like literally dropped everything
- 1:03:26to move here.
- 1:03:28You know,
- 1:03:29so I didn't go through anything crazy.
- 1:03:32But when I thought about it, well,
- 1:03:34what am I going to say?
- 1:03:34You know, I don't have a sob story.
- 1:03:36I don't have anything crazy to tell.
- 1:03:37Well,
- 1:03:37my story is the story of if you
- 1:03:40believe in yourself,
- 1:03:41then don't give up on yourself.
- 1:03:43So it doesn't matter if you've got a
- 1:03:44huge story to tell or a small story
- 1:03:45to tell.
- 1:03:46Somebody will resonate to you as long as
- 1:03:48you are you.
- 1:03:52Authenticity is king.
- 1:03:53Yeah.
- 1:03:54I think a lot of people want to
- 1:03:55be the next Oliver Anthony.
- 1:03:58And so they hope that that's what's going
- 1:04:00to happen.
- 1:04:01And they don't realize that you're ten
- 1:04:03years into an overnight success.
- 1:04:05Right.
- 1:04:06Because I mean,
- 1:04:07he literally blew up in like three and
- 1:04:08a half days.
- 1:04:10and everybody's like oh that's what
- 1:04:12music's like and i know it's not no
- 1:04:13and like and he had been singing and
- 1:04:17driving the same old pickup doing like
- 1:04:19that he he was creating for him it's
- 1:04:21something he enjoyed doing yeah that's
- 1:04:24where it comes from is when your heart's
- 1:04:25like i love doing this yep
- 1:04:27Yeah,
- 1:04:27and then it is ten years to an
- 1:04:28overnight success.
- 1:04:29I know.
- 1:04:29They'll look at you like, yeah,
- 1:04:36you just blew up.
- 1:04:37Yeah, sure did.
- 1:04:37You've been here a long time.
- 1:04:40I blew up since I was twelve.
- 1:04:43Jonah's age.
- 1:04:44Jonah, when's your next song coming out?
- 1:04:46You working on one?
- 1:04:48Not yet.
- 1:04:49He's doing acting.
- 1:04:49He's a big actor these days.
- 1:04:50You're acting now?
- 1:04:52Okay.
- 1:04:53Are you in a movie?
- 1:04:53I'm in a TV show.
- 1:04:55in a tv show yep you got a
- 1:04:57little cameo for uh okay the nine one
- 1:05:00one nashville nice first episode awesome
- 1:05:03yeah nice that's good stuff so maybe maybe
- 1:05:07some people spot them in their first
- 1:05:08episode nine one one nashville yeah my mom
- 1:05:12made me watch that twice
- 1:05:14So not made me mom was watching it
- 1:05:16twice and I walked through the house and
- 1:05:18saw, I was like,
- 1:05:18didn't you already watch this?
- 1:05:19Wow.
- 1:05:20I didn't quite get all of it the
- 1:05:21first time.
- 1:05:22There you go.
- 1:05:23I'm going to have to watch it now.
- 1:05:25You do you.
- 1:05:26I love it there.
- 1:05:27You got a Friday.
- 1:05:27Feel good.
- 1:05:28Always.
- 1:05:28Hey,
- 1:05:29but I think this one just falls right.
- 1:05:31Dang in line with what we've been talking
- 1:05:32about here today.
- 1:05:34Be stubborn about your goals,
- 1:05:37but be flexible about your methods.
- 1:05:39Y'all know what to do.
- 1:05:40Find somebody, you know,
- 1:05:40tell them you love them.
- 1:05:41If the plan don't work, change the plan.
- 1:05:44Don't change the goal.
- 1:05:45That's right.
- 1:05:46That's it.
- 1:05:47Kaylin, look,
- 1:05:47I really appreciate you coming to hang out
- 1:05:49with us.
- 1:05:49Thank you so much.
- 1:05:50It's been a pleasure.
- 1:05:50It's been fun.
- 1:05:52You're welcome back anytime,
- 1:05:53especially if you bring the man.
- 1:05:54Yeah.
- 1:05:54Okay.
- 1:05:56Now, bring the man.
- 1:05:57I will tell you this.
- 1:05:58When you get your next song written,
- 1:06:01I got to know about it.
- 1:06:02Okay?
- 1:06:03And then we'll have you back on,
- 1:06:05and the episode will be all about you.
- 1:06:07Deal?
- 1:06:07Deal.
- 1:06:08All right.
- 1:06:08Deal.
- 1:06:09Love it.
- 1:06:10If people are trying to find you, Caitlin,
- 1:06:12how can they find you, book you,
- 1:06:13all the things?
- 1:06:14Yeah.
- 1:06:15On any of my socials, I have Facebook,
- 1:06:19TikTok, Instagram,
- 1:06:21and then all streaming platforms.
- 1:06:23But it's just my name, Caitlin Curtis.
- 1:06:25It is very hard to spell.
- 1:06:26That's my mom's fault.
- 1:06:28So, but yeah, Caitlin Curtis.
- 1:06:31Caitlin is C-A-I-T-L-Y-N-N-E,
- 1:06:34just for those that are going to be
- 1:06:35like, what's she mean?
- 1:06:36It's hard to spell.
