1:15
[SPEAKER_04]: Today it's going to be a special rewind episode.
1:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Looking back at my interviews with both Valerie June and Billy Bragg.
1:21
[SPEAKER_04]: In fact, the Valerie June and Billy Bragg heads back to the early 2010s, both of the first ones in 2013.
1:29
[SPEAKER_04]: And then there's a second Valerie interview from 2017 as well.
1:33
[SPEAKER_04]: And Valerie's going to talk about drawing from spirituals and early blues and teaching herself to play around her voice, making pushing against the stone and the order of time.
1:43
[SPEAKER_04]: While Billy Bragg will explain my protest writers and he just spend as much time on the song as the protest.
1:50
[SPEAKER_04]: Along the way, Valerie recall recording with her family and writing the title track to Mavis Staples living on a high note and Billy's going to reveal how posing as a TV
2:03
[SPEAKER_04]: and that's where we'll start.
2:04
[SPEAKER_04]: It was back in 2013.
2:07
[SPEAKER_04]: Billy Bragg joined me on a rooftop in Austin, Texas during that year's South by Southwest to talk about his handyman blues record and hustling to get his record dealing and keeping a political song relevant long after its event.
2:23
[SPEAKER_04]: So let's get into his part one of a special rewind episode.
2:27
[SPEAKER_04]: Here's Kyle Meredith with Billy Bragg.
2:35
[SPEAKER_03]: The legendary Billy Rack, not as his native weather, by legendary means over 50, but that's cool, the easy way of saying, it's a Spanish full of 20 year old young men with fizzy beards trying to be sound like they're over 50, so I'll fill on my head at the curve in that sense.
2:54
[SPEAKER_04]: Welcome, welcome to South Bay, it's great to see, it's great to see you back with the new record and it's been a few years to the nail Yeah, congratulations that just got released, right?
3:02
[SPEAKER_03]: Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mundi, Mund
3:21
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, he did it.
3:22
[SPEAKER_03]: No, he did a great thing.
3:23
[SPEAKER_03]: He got some guys together in his basement Would play, you know 12 songs in five days and all done and thus did Like I say it was just a lovely way to make a record.
3:33
[SPEAKER_04]: That's kind of the way he works too And he wasn't with Grammys on that.
3:36
[SPEAKER_04]: He does.
3:36
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, so expect that.
3:38
[SPEAKER_03]: I've already got my frog
3:41
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the top.
3:42
[SPEAKER_03]: This is the bottom.
3:43
[SPEAKER_03]: That's nice.
3:44
[SPEAKER_03]: That's what Jennifer Lawrence called that.
3:46
[SPEAKER_03]: Exactly.
3:48
[SPEAKER_03]: She's my red carpet.
3:49
[SPEAKER_03]: So I'm laughing.
3:49
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to model my speech.
3:51
[SPEAKER_03]: I'm going to trip up the steps and that a whole thing.
3:53
[SPEAKER_03]: I think she's great.
3:54
[SPEAKER_03]: You'll be swell.
3:57
[SPEAKER_04]: The do record is fantastic.
3:58
[SPEAKER_04]: It's got all your homeworks on there.
4:00
[SPEAKER_04]: You're a lover and a fighter Yeah, usual as you love injustice.
4:03
[SPEAKER_03]: That's what I call me But you come out even the first thing we heard was even a bit of a humorous thing with handyman blues Well, you might think it's humorous, but my apartment Julia who asked the problem me not being able to hang pictures She never laughs when everyone else laughs when I get that song and she's I know she's standing in the back
4:20
[SPEAKER_03]: Shaking her head disappointedly but fortunately the good thing fortunate is her brother my brother-in-law He's pretty good like that so anything needs to in round-a-house one fight him over for a weekend And he he hangs the curtain round all that rubbish.
4:33
[SPEAKER_03]: That's good to have one of those around helps.
4:35
[SPEAKER_04]: It really helps Yeah, it's not so much it's kind of like an apology, but almost like a realization as to what are those things you will never be
4:43
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, there's no pretending that I'm going to be the person who can do that, you know, drilling and soaring and all that kind of stuff.
4:49
[SPEAKER_03]: Now, if you want to love song, give me a shout.
4:52
[SPEAKER_03]: Although, worryingly, it was mother's day on Sunday in England, last Sunday.
4:58
[SPEAKER_03]: And my son wrote his mother's song from Mother's Day and sang it to her, to go all the most about it.
5:04
[SPEAKER_03]: And I thought you'd be missing a trick these last 20 years.
5:06
[SPEAKER_03]: I could have saved myself a lot of money and probably made a good album.
5:11
[SPEAKER_03]: of songs for Julia.
5:13
[SPEAKER_03]: Mind you, most of my arms are like that, anyone.
5:16
[SPEAKER_04]: I will point out that with one more thing with that song.
5:18
[SPEAKER_04]: It's not entirely true because if I think I was really slight about being a TV repairman once, and that's how you ended up here.
5:24
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't lie about being a TV repairman.
5:26
[SPEAKER_03]: I was seeing in the foyer of a record company trying to get in and get my tape hurt, and someone said to me, are you the guy who's come here to tune the video into the TV?
5:36
[SPEAKER_03]: That's how long the guy was.
5:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Where?
5:39
[SPEAKER_03]: civilians didn't know how to do it and at the time while I was trying to get hustled to get my record deal I was working with a guy who made audio visual presentations and we'd love to big old video machine which is about a size and way of this full-box week we're a massive thing to the clients and one of the things we have to do is plug it in and tune in so I didn't lie I couldn't I hadn't come this expressly but if you're looking for a get to go guy to do that I'm your man so I managed to sneak through reception
6:07
[SPEAKER_03]: tune in the TV for these people and then give my type to Pete the channel and so he is like, here we are, it works out okay.
6:14
[SPEAKER_03]: So if you need your video tune, we don't do this anymore.
6:17
[SPEAKER_03]: There are people just who just comes in one thing now, doesn't it?
6:19
[SPEAKER_03]: Not a handyman, but he can't do that exactly.
6:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Once again back to the lover of the fighter, you've always kept your records really cut down the metal, you've got some great love songs, but you do do a lot of political songs and always politically relevant to that time.
6:33
[SPEAKER_04]: I've heard that the easiest thing in the world right is a love song, but that's just what we pour out with the emotions.
6:38
[SPEAKER_04]: Is it easy though to write in such parameters like that?
6:41
[SPEAKER_04]: It's trying to say this is what's happening in the world.
6:43
[SPEAKER_04]: I have to find the words specifically for that.
6:46
[SPEAKER_03]: I think the real problem with produce songs, when people write produce songs, these people spend all their time on the protest and not enough on the song.
6:55
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a real conundrum.
6:57
[SPEAKER_03]: If you do want people to remember what you're saying, if you can put a hook around it,
7:01
[SPEAKER_03]: And I think of songs like, you know, what's going on by Marvin Gaye or Changes going to come by Sam Cook.
7:07
[SPEAKER_03]: You know, once you hear it, it stays with you.
7:09
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
7:09
[SPEAKER_03]: Whereas, you know, just a long list of things that you're angry about.
7:12
[SPEAKER_03]: And, you know, just free chords.
7:14
[SPEAKER_03]: Doesn't always hit the spot.
7:15
[SPEAKER_03]: So if you are sitting out there thinking about writing protests songs, I would spend as much time on the song as you do on the protest.
7:22
[SPEAKER_04]: No, it's a great point too, because they have such a shoplay.
7:26
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, you have certain songs out there like you're writing don't buy the sun Yeah, something like that, you know when you're writing that or you say and am I only gonna be singing this for a week or or do you expect that you might be singing it for 50 years And we're gonna be going what is he top of the weird thing about everybody's song, which I wrote when the news of the phone hacking broke On the day the phone hacking broke.
7:44
[SPEAKER_03]: I thought I get in tweet saying you've got a stop playing I've a song called it says here about tabloid news play this
7:51
[SPEAKER_03]: If you were saying to me, you must start singing that song again.
7:53
[SPEAKER_03]: I thought, you know, I must.
7:54
[SPEAKER_03]: I made a couple of mental notes to put into the lyric.
7:59
[SPEAKER_03]: And when I actually, by the way, on the Wednesday of that week, I went and I've listened to the song.
8:02
[SPEAKER_03]: I didn't need to change a single word.
8:04
[SPEAKER_03]: It was all still.
8:05
[SPEAKER_03]: That's the terrible curse of the topical songwriter.
8:09
[SPEAKER_03]: damn things become topical again.
8:11
[SPEAKER_03]: So I don't use lyrics and no song to put them in.
8:14
[SPEAKER_03]: So I have to write never by the sun.
8:16
[SPEAKER_03]: It's a strange process But yeah, I do I do I do expect to be singing some of those old songs again.
8:21
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean even on this tour I know it's that people were tweeting lines from a song a local ideology which is basically about politicians gone corrupt and and so I put that back in the set now everyone's loving it.
8:32
[SPEAKER_03]: So it's a strange process in it
8:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you ever worry about the preaching of the choir on these records?
8:36
[SPEAKER_04]: You're trying to get a message out.
8:38
[SPEAKER_04]: How do you get a pass to people by the record?
8:40
[SPEAKER_03]: Well, it depends what you think is supposed to be doing with your music.
8:44
[SPEAKER_03]: I think the most that you can do as a songwriter for making the world about place is to inspire your audience to engage in the process and not take responsibility from them.
8:55
[SPEAKER_03]: That's why they think that by the Billy Bragg record they've done their bit, you know.
8:58
[SPEAKER_03]: So, what I'm doing on a kick-knife is I'm drawing the people, all the people together in a particular town who feel sympathetic to my politics, as individuals, they might work in a place or go to school or live in a family where there's racism, sexism, homophobia, but they come together in this crowd of people and realize they're not the only people in their town who care about this stuff and that
9:28
[SPEAKER_03]: Preaching to the choir, but you're also trying to inspire the choir.
9:31
[SPEAKER_01]: They're even rhymes.
9:32
[SPEAKER_03]: I should write that down You inspire in the choir.
9:35
[SPEAKER_03]: You kind of avoid just no point in me standing at a door saying do you agree with me?
9:38
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, you can't come in.
9:39
[SPEAKER_03]: I mean, there's a really well right out.
9:40
[SPEAKER_04]: That's not that's no way to get to Austin You've got a great job of it throughout your entire career To the nail is a beautiful record.
9:47
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a great record.
9:48
[SPEAKER_03]: Oh, okay wait for the rest of the world to really dig into it
9:51
[SPEAKER_04]: And a quick pause to say that if you're enjoying what you're hearing right now, please do make sure to hit that subscribe button if you're not already.
9:57
[SPEAKER_04]: It helps out so much and we'll be right back right after this.
10:02
[SPEAKER_04]: Welcome back, it's Kyle Meredith.
10:03
[SPEAKER_04]: All right, moving on to part two.
10:05
[SPEAKER_04]: This one was also in in 2013.
10:08
[SPEAKER_04]: It was my conversation with a Valerie June.
10:11
[SPEAKER_04]: We were still in Austin just the back half of the year where we started in South by Southwest with Billy Bragg.
10:17
[SPEAKER_04]: Later on that year, we had moved to Austin City limits the ACL music festival to talk to Valerie about pushing on a stone's beginnings and her love of older blues and
10:28
[SPEAKER_04]: and the lure of spirituals and how it all fits with the folk resurgence that was happening at that time.
10:34
[SPEAKER_04]: Part 2 of this special rewind episode, it's Kyle Meredith with Valerie June.
10:42
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, it's Kyle Meredith with weekly feed.
10:43
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sitting with Valerie June, and I'm so excited to find the meet you Me too.
10:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, weekly feed.
10:49
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
10:49
[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's it.
10:50
[SPEAKER_00]: It just you run it through there.
10:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I had to meet you Yeah, no, it's great.
10:54
[SPEAKER_04]: It's great.
10:54
[SPEAKER_04]: This must be You can do it.
10:56
[SPEAKER_04]: You can do it.
10:57
[SPEAKER_04]: If it's just a hit us on the eat on the keyboard.
10:59
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah singers and all the songs were
11:01
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll go with the syllable, sounds, and the E-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-e-
11:25
[SPEAKER_04]: We were just talking with your tour in May, Jake Bugg.
11:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Alan Bugg, yeah, and that's, like, there couldn't be a more perfect build because I see the both of you guys steeped in this history of music but doing something like adding these new, new autism flourishes to this, you know, to this heritage style of music.
11:43
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know how you came about it, but it works well and it almost seems like you become kind of like a conduit and an aggregator to reintroduce people to this style.
11:55
[SPEAKER_04]: Is that right?
11:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you feel like this or is this just like what you're doing?
11:58
[SPEAKER_00]: I think Tom will tell the answers to the English Tom will tell the music I think people and what it does and if it goes that deeply Yeah, because we're so room to pass in this viral world We'll see if it's the own or away Well, it's like there is this time I think when we got away from a really rude to base cell and music and blues
12:23
[SPEAKER_04]: And with this record out there, it almost seems like you can introduce people to this style that almost got forgot.
12:31
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, when you're out there because I'm assuming now with you out on the road, like, you know, you hear all this music, but you're still learning.
12:38
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, you're still hearing a lot of this stuff, right?
12:41
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, somebody's over style.
12:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god.
12:43
[SPEAKER_00]: So, I was there to meet my music in LA, and I had to do an Instagram.
12:47
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody was like, trying to warm me.
12:49
[SPEAKER_00]: The trouble I was getting in, where I was going to show up and I was going to do my Instagram.
12:54
[SPEAKER_00]: And before, after I was going to get lost in the records.
12:57
[SPEAKER_00]: So like I'm going through the country section and that's a really pops out to me.
13:01
[SPEAKER_00]: I was like Kind of sad, you know, then have like I've only just the every time I'm not even rocking the final card of family on vinyl this way to a hole again So this is the point in the country section.
13:12
[SPEAKER_00]: Don't be bad in the garden
13:15
[SPEAKER_00]: My husband was like, I went over to the blue section.
13:19
[SPEAKER_00]: I got Charlie.
13:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Padden on the, I got Mr. Bixie, some vinyl.
13:23
[SPEAKER_00]: I got like a blind woman, Jefferson on the vinyl.
13:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I got like, what, blind, Blake on the vinyl?
13:30
[SPEAKER_00]: That will never happen no more.
13:31
[SPEAKER_00]: What are we talking about here?
13:33
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm constantly learning.
13:34
[SPEAKER_00]: What's the reason we've been inspired by the old days?
13:37
[SPEAKER_00]: Making things from the past and like allowing them to lift me up in the way I am now.
13:42
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's true.
13:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean there's very few of the younger of the newer class and everything that's really promoting that style and you've been able to look at what I mean It's hard to peg you.
13:49
[SPEAKER_04]: I know you've had to deal with that That's how you know, genre is everything, but that's when you, I mean that's one of the great things that I'll leave you put out of your record But you're kind of reintroducing all this stuff that people probably just never Probably not, but those people don't break into the past Yeah, that is good On the other side, this is one of those I think on your answer but questions but getting into the spirituals and everything
14:11
[SPEAKER_03]: Why do they feel so good to sing?
14:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I can sing a rock song in this grade, but there's something about spirituals.
14:17
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure you know something about that.
14:18
[SPEAKER_04]: I can't even open this because it does you throw one of those songs out there.
14:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And you just erupts through you.
14:23
[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't really try to think about that until I started listening to your record.
14:26
[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I'm not necessarily artists anymore.
14:28
[SPEAKER_00]: It's spiritual, like...
14:31
[SPEAKER_00]: It's never, ever alive.
14:33
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
14:34
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I don't care if you are Muslim or Christian or like...
14:44
[SPEAKER_00]: When you listen to a spiritual song, and you really like open your heart, you can feel it.
14:50
[SPEAKER_00]: You can feel the message of it, the story of it.
14:53
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, just a simple story, just break it down to a simple story, and take all the religion out of it.
14:59
[SPEAKER_00]: And the lessons that it leaves you are just as simple as like an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex-Oxfabe or an ex
15:28
[SPEAKER_00]: And I believe that, but I'm more of a storyteller and a songwriter, and so I listen to the stories all the time.
15:34
[SPEAKER_00]: And when I listen to a spiritual, like this week, the one that's gotten me, it's prepared to meet that guy.
15:41
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I haven't heard prepared to meet that guy in years, but I was in my house every day, and I needed to lean on something, and I heard some, you know, beautiful voice in the past.
15:51
[SPEAKER_00]: I was looking for something in there, let's just say.
15:53
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, she's so old.
15:54
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah.
15:55
[SPEAKER_00]: real life will soon be gone.
15:57
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, well, we're organly here.
15:59
[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
16:00
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you hear that in a song, with such passion and such spirit and such energy, like it still means so much to me, even though I don't, you know, go to church every Sunday and sit and Wednesday like I used to.
16:12
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right there.
16:13
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right there.
16:14
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right there.
16:14
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right there.
16:15
[SPEAKER_00]: It's all right there.
16:16
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's the love.
16:16
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
16:17
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the love now and the one being.
16:19
[SPEAKER_00]: It's changed form.
16:20
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's the love.
16:21
[SPEAKER_04]: And you use all of these characters in your songs.
16:24
[SPEAKER_04]: When you're seeing in those, do you have to let body those characters like do you have to get in that head space where you have to live through that because there's a lot of dark, you know, dark stories and in your songs As much as promising, but it seems to me you'd have to get in a certain kind of head space to be able to end in both moves
16:39
[SPEAKER_00]: in a lot of ways.
16:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes yes.
16:42
[SPEAKER_00]: But sometimes, you know, if I can say when I'm singing the song and I'm in it in that way that you describe versus I'm just singing the song.
16:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I try to do it and be in it in the way that you describe.
16:55
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's not something I can turn on right off.
16:57
[SPEAKER_00]: It's something that comes into my body.
16:58
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm feeling
17:00
[SPEAKER_00]: recording whatever whatever I don't know like I just today we just get that up and performed a really really built you know time and twisted which is on the record I really felt that song very deeply that everything you thought you knew plus a lot more
17:17
[SPEAKER_00]: on a twisted turn.
17:18
[SPEAKER_00]: We got new places, so we're all shackled fans to see our round.
17:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I just been feeling like, you know, and I also got working on the blues today.
17:26
[SPEAKER_00]: I've been very busy.
17:28
[SPEAKER_00]: I kind of need to, like, slow a little tail day and sit and meditate, so we're I think I'll walk in the meditation every day.
17:34
[SPEAKER_00]: But, you know, just this deal.
17:36
[SPEAKER_00]: And just to be in one place, it just to be quiet.
17:39
[SPEAKER_00]: This is where it turns out that the work on the blues and get in our place in this world.
17:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I write a lot of songs, but I only like to sing the ones that I can feel.
17:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is a good way to do that.
17:52
[SPEAKER_00]: I can post a lot.
17:53
[SPEAKER_00]: If I gotta sing, I'll tie them tonight.
17:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, a little bit of you back story.
17:58
[SPEAKER_04]: I've written it from wrong.
17:58
[SPEAKER_04]: I read, so you got married at 19?
18:01
[SPEAKER_00]: At the end?
18:01
[SPEAKER_04]: To, it was a band made at the time, or became a band made, was it right?
18:05
[SPEAKER_00]: No, we were lovers first.
18:06
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
18:07
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't marry bandmates.
18:08
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go marry and marry.
18:09
[SPEAKER_04]: I didn't mean to like that obviously.
18:10
[SPEAKER_04]: You're right.
18:11
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
18:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
18:12
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't work my way through the band.
18:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
18:14
[SPEAKER_00]: Thank you.
18:15
[SPEAKER_00]: So like, what happened was, you know, we were in a band together.
18:18
[SPEAKER_00]: And that came after.
18:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
18:20
[SPEAKER_00]: We got married.
18:22
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, when you're working in that close environment with your lover or with your husband isn't it being?
18:27
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, there is that tension, but I have to almost assume that all of that kind of led to this voice, like letting you find this voice of yours.
18:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I think you'd be when I left then, um, plan.
18:41
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
18:42
[SPEAKER_00]: And I just started to, like, the song was still coming.
18:47
[SPEAKER_00]: I couldn't stop.
18:49
[SPEAKER_00]: I could not stop here.
18:50
[SPEAKER_00]: Voice is weird.
18:52
[SPEAKER_00]: But I can play anything.
18:53
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's kind of like, being like unable to speak.
18:58
[SPEAKER_00]: But having a lot to say.
18:59
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what it was like.
19:04
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, you know, I just didn't do that.
19:06
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what I've heard of you out there right now.
19:08
[SPEAKER_00]: And so it just started to come out like this, you know?
19:11
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, how did you learn to play?
19:12
[SPEAKER_04]: How did you learn to play guitar?
19:13
[SPEAKER_04]: Where did you learn to play it?
19:14
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, do you have to go for instructions?
19:15
[SPEAKER_04]: Or was it just like, I have this?
19:17
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm going to sit down and I'm going to eat this beat at it.
19:20
[SPEAKER_04]: I'll have it.
19:21
[SPEAKER_04]: That's what it was like because you have some great guitar play and it's really unique And I guess it's a way because you're not coming from any way I don't know about it.
19:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, it does That's a cross that way And I've heard a lot of people say when you when you when you can't emulate some one You've got to come up with it on your own.
19:35
[SPEAKER_00]: I just played a lot of boys and this what it came down to because I tried to play like You know be stretcher and like Focus and pick up from other musicians that were in a man fist and just be like
19:48
[SPEAKER_00]: Watching their fingers it's time to just learn everything I could and that but ultimately I was like, okay I don't have perfect river I'm not a musician, but I hear voices and I can sing and I'm gonna just play to my more Did it's with my voice, you know, play to my voice?
20:08
[SPEAKER_00]: This sounds good with my boys.
20:09
[SPEAKER_00]: This sounds good with my boys and just go from there and eventually it just became a while I got 10 songs to sound good with my boys.
20:15
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I got Three four songs on the bench.
20:18
[SPEAKER_00]: I was down here with my boys.
20:19
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I got 12 And I'm talking to her.
20:21
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm going to my boys and do all you go in it.
20:24
[SPEAKER_00]: It's down here to my boys What does it be to my boys my rare?
20:29
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have to be Jimmy hinders and what you know, I just had to be Yeah, I love it
20:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I just got to wait.
20:37
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to let your legs go.
20:39
[SPEAKER_04]: That's where you usually shoot.
20:40
[SPEAKER_04]: That's where you usually shoot these.
20:41
[SPEAKER_00]: I love it.
20:42
[SPEAKER_03]: I love it.
20:43
[SPEAKER_03]: So when you left here, you're right.
20:45
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, I'm actually good-tucky in the little hole, but we go to the yard to shoot.
20:48
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you're good there to shoot.
20:51
[SPEAKER_04]: So when you left the south, though, for Brooklyn, you get up there during this old research.
20:56
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know anything about it either, until I got to taste it's less.
21:00
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh really, but you're up there at the time, and everybody is deciding like we're going to pick up the acoustic, and this thing happens.
21:05
[SPEAKER_04]: You come from this actually rooted base, where a lot of these people, I'm not calling them completely, you know, as a genuist or whatever, but at the same time they're coming from a different, you know, world where they're
21:18
[SPEAKER_04]: They're hearing those sounds, but not ever having lived it.
21:21
[SPEAKER_04]: Was there ever any resentment or competition or like that ramen area?
21:24
[SPEAKER_00]: That you know, you know, I've read a lot of stuff.
21:27
[SPEAKER_00]: It lowmakes a spit out.
21:29
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a huge fan of seaguer.
21:30
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I'm a Pete seaguer.
21:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, not a lot of pop pop pop pop pop.
21:36
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, I like that.
21:37
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm too But I'm a big fan of Pete.
21:40
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and I mean even more than her.
21:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah And he does excellent
21:47
[SPEAKER_00]: American.
21:48
[SPEAKER_00]: I would say Southern American.
21:50
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, he's helped create the genre.
21:51
[SPEAKER_04]: That's the way we're right out here.
21:53
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess it's a good time in place.
21:55
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's a good time in place.
21:56
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a new youngster right away from Europe.
21:59
[SPEAKER_00]: We're coming in and they were making this music they're on.
22:03
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll do that with the music because that's what I'm doing.
22:05
[SPEAKER_00]: I listen to the whole music and I let it inspire me and I let it move me and I let it be a foundation or a root to where I'm gonna go And I think that the music of roots music and call music is that anybody can do it anybody can do it Like in the church that I went to we had no part everybody sang everybody had to do it because it was a gift guys
22:27
[SPEAKER_00]: law for you to not lift your voice and sing.
22:30
[SPEAKER_00]: You had to join.
22:31
[SPEAKER_00]: You had to find your own voice and your own instrument and your voice, you know?
22:37
[SPEAKER_00]: And there were no instrument and play.
22:39
[SPEAKER_00]: It was only voices.
22:40
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's where I just learned.
22:42
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, that dude on the back row, he sounds good.
22:45
[SPEAKER_00]: That woman up there sounds really good.
22:47
[SPEAKER_00]: This one's in right beside me, sounds good.
22:49
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I might have said it's the one over there that doesn't sound good, right?
22:51
[SPEAKER_00]: Because he probably sounds good to somebody else, so I'm just gonna go and see how I'm good to me.
22:55
[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, he's still like, it's all relative to who it is, this listening.
23:00
[SPEAKER_00]: I know everybody's not going to like what I do and some people are going to look at it in that way where it's like, who is this person to come and take something that's old and try to call it new?
23:10
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't try to do that.
23:11
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm influenced by the old and I think the same thing's happening in a Brooklyn with people that are playing, roots, music,
23:18
[SPEAKER_00]: In our way, when people get a plan real easy, it's American music, it's our music, and it doesn't matter who it is.
23:24
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and it even goes deeper than being American, but what can you call it then?
23:28
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I swear I have put it pushing against his son's friend to ask, thank you.
23:31
[SPEAKER_03]: Hey, thanks so much for coming by here.
23:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you.
23:33
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
23:34
[SPEAKER_03]: Alright.
23:35
[SPEAKER_04]: And a quick pause to say that if you're enjoying what you're hearing right now, please do make sure to hit that subscribe button.
23:41
[SPEAKER_04]: If you're not already, it helps out so much, and we'll be right back right after this.
23:47
[SPEAKER_04]: are welcome back part three the final part of this special rewind episode takes us into a 2017 when Valerie June dropped by the WFP case studio to talk about the record that she just released around the time called the order of time and so here's part three with much better sound quality it's Kyle Meredith with Valerie June.
24:06
[SPEAKER_03]: Thank you thanks for having us great to see I'll get you a little bit closer to that mic up there.
24:10
[SPEAKER_04]: It's everyone from far away.
24:12
[SPEAKER_04]: It's real, she's here, she's gonna be playing at the bomb heart theater tonight's at the Kentucky Center for the Arts Beautiful theater.
24:20
[SPEAKER_04]: It's a great place to be.
24:21
[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if you've been over there yet.
24:22
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm excited to get to go for the first time Yeah, Center for the Arts multiple theaters a great place over there and it's nice.
24:29
[SPEAKER_04]: It's nice to have you back here You got the album when the order of time when is that come out that's soon, right?
24:34
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, March 10th.
24:35
[SPEAKER_01]: So very soon That's my little sister's birthday So it'll be a present for her.
24:39
[SPEAKER_04]: You plan that right?
24:40
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, completely absolutely
24:44
[SPEAKER_04]: it's great you know what we've heard so far from this record and you've put like three singles out so far I was kind of wondering like judging by the I guess the success of your last record and how long you toured on that like did you have any time in between these records to I don't know chill out live life
25:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Not really, I mean, but I did live life, you know, I've started a great jungle in my apartment in New York.
25:10
[SPEAKER_01]: So the beautiful bay windows are there and they get perfect sun, so I'm able to like grow pretty much every kind of plan I love in that window.
25:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I started a little bit of an outside garden in the back, so that takes time, you know, so I had some home time of watering and things.
25:29
[SPEAKER_01]: That I normally wouldn't have because I'd be traveling and staying in hotels and not able to take care of my plants Like I have one plant that I call the only one because it's the only one that made it through my 200 dates a year for two years with fish and against the stone And it's amazing now.
25:46
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so full and beautiful.
25:48
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the pathosophility and dream Apartment gardening.
25:51
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's what you have to do in New York.
25:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, you talk about your plants a bit like people talk about their pets
25:58
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I love, yeah, they're my babies.
26:01
[SPEAKER_04]: You truly are talking playing the music to them and everything?
26:03
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, you know, plants love music.
26:05
[SPEAKER_01]: That's true.
26:05
[SPEAKER_01]: I believe there's a, in there, like a record of Stevie Wonder or something.
26:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, right.
26:10
[SPEAKER_04]: No, he didn't, he knew he knew he was all about that.
26:12
[SPEAKER_04]: That's true.
26:13
[SPEAKER_04]: I think it went there.
26:14
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
26:14
[SPEAKER_04]: We had a, somebody brought a plan in here, which is the studio is the worst place to have.
26:19
[SPEAKER_04]: any plant that needs light and and it I don't know so we thought it'll be in here and it'll probably die within a week and I think without water anything the thing was a lie for a month and my that's my theory is it's set right in front of the speaker so it love the music yeah
26:37
[SPEAKER_04]: music that we've been playing.
26:38
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, cool.
26:39
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
26:40
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, it is because the first thing we heard was an astral plane, which is this beautiful song.
26:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And maybe it's the title that it, you know, puts that image out there, but it's almost like a lullaby to the universe.
26:52
[SPEAKER_01]: It is, I guess it could be considered that, another thing that plants love is light, and so astral plane to me has a lot of light in it, and it gives, it reminds me that I have an inner light that I need to shine, you know.
27:08
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think all people do, and I feel like no light's the same, everybody's light's different.
27:13
[SPEAKER_01]: So you can't ever deal because you need to shine as bright as you can because we need all the different colors and shades of light that the world has.
27:22
[SPEAKER_01]: And sometimes we get doubtful or we think, oh well, maybe I'm not going to shine so bright today.
27:28
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have the energy.
27:29
[SPEAKER_01]: But this one you got to think about somebody like Sharon Jones, who
27:33
[SPEAKER_01]: I opened for her for two months, and she was fighting cancer all along the way, but she never let that crowd see it when she hit the stage, you know.
27:41
[SPEAKER_01]: She just was shining every day.
27:43
[SPEAKER_04]: Amazing.
27:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Despite of what you might go through in your life, it's just about finding your light inside and shining.
27:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, does that pertain any to the title of the record with the order of time?
27:52
[SPEAKER_04]: Because there seems like there's some kind of thread in, you know, that fits between all of that.
27:57
[SPEAKER_01]: It doesn't a lot of ways when you are on the journey towards a dream.
28:02
[SPEAKER_01]: And you think, oh, I want to one day I want to be this or I want to be that.
28:06
[SPEAKER_01]: We always think these things and we think, oh, I want it to happen now.
28:10
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to wait.
28:11
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to go through all of these steps that it takes to manifest this thing, this dream.
28:16
[SPEAKER_01]: But the order of time is dealing with how, you know, when the dreamer sets out on a journey to create this beautiful dream in this life, it does take time.
28:25
[SPEAKER_01]: And so you have to have a lot of patience on the road towards the drain.
28:28
[SPEAKER_01]: And so the record deals with all the human emotions that you go through along the journey.
28:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And songs are the best way to really capture emotions and to like take them and bottle them and give them to the world.
28:41
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's the best way I found to do it.
28:43
[SPEAKER_01]: I like to paint.
28:44
[SPEAKER_01]: I like to dance and all these other forms of art, but songs are the easiest one for me.
28:49
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, and I read about your writing style how it's it's constant.
28:52
[SPEAKER_04]: You're always writing as you go along and not specifically for the record But like in choosing the songs.
28:58
[SPEAKER_04]: Did you look for that?
28:59
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean you kind of grouping it in on that journey idea is that how you kind of centered in on all the songs and said Oh, those are the ones that fit this theme.
29:08
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean was that a part of it?
29:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Now it came afterwards.
29:10
[SPEAKER_01]: What I did is I sat with Matt Mary Naley who produced it and he said it's semi all your songs.
29:16
[SPEAKER_01]: So I sent him about a hundred songs and he said, oh my god, I got a lot of them on my honors.
29:21
[SPEAKER_01]: And so he listened to him and he made a list of 20 that he liked and I made a list of 20 that I absolutely had to record.
29:29
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we looked at the list side by side and we said, well, you have some of the ones that I have.
29:33
[SPEAKER_01]: And so those absolutely, we both loved and we had to record.
29:37
[SPEAKER_01]: And then others, we kind of like thought a little bit like, no, this would know that one.
29:41
[SPEAKER_01]: And then finally we decided absolutely these are the ones.
29:45
[SPEAKER_01]: And we went in and we invited a whole lot of friends and family and everybody to join us and make the record, a lot of good food, a lot of good fun.
29:53
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
29:54
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, that's how we did it.
29:55
[SPEAKER_04]: What happens to those other songs?
29:56
[SPEAKER_04]: Do you think they just go away because you're still writing?
29:58
[SPEAKER_04]: Or do you hope that they eventually find their way out as well?
30:02
[SPEAKER_01]: they'll find their way um you know it's kind of like I guess if a person had a child and you you know you give give it everything and give it when it's little and raising it but you have to let it go and you have to let it find its way and so the songs do that like for example one of my songs maybe staples um sang on her last record and she named the record living on the high note after my song high note because I wrote that song I didn't write it thinking oh I'm gonna give this
30:31
[SPEAKER_01]: And she asked me for a positive song, and I had maybe like three positive songs out of 100, so I sent her all three, and that's the one she loved.
30:39
[SPEAKER_01]: But it could very well be in one that I recorded for this record, or one I get to share with another artist.
30:44
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's all of these different capacities for which they might be used.
30:48
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I just laughed at this one interview question I got once to say it, well, what are you going to do with the songs or tell us something about a song that you never have released and why you never released it?
30:59
[SPEAKER_01]: And I had a hard time with that one, but the one that came up for me was a little bit about that I wrote years ago, and I thought to myself,
31:07
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably never going to release this little about to the world.
31:10
[SPEAKER_01]: This little bias for me to sing to my child if I ever have one.
31:14
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's the reason that that song came to me is not for everybody, you know?
31:19
[SPEAKER_01]: So different songs are for different things and they're all very alive and they have like desires and ways that they want to go.
31:27
[SPEAKER_01]: They're vibrant and they're living just like the plants are.
31:30
[SPEAKER_04]: I love the poetry of your descriptions just as much as I love the lyrics and the song itself.
31:35
[SPEAKER_04]: Very well spoken.
31:36
[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm talking to Valerie June here on 919 WFPK.
31:38
[SPEAKER_04]: She's playing tonight at the Balmheart Theatre.
31:40
[SPEAKER_04]: You get the details at WFPK.org.
31:42
[SPEAKER_04]: She has a guitar and hand and we are live on Facebook if you want to watch this.
31:46
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think I can talk her into playing a song right now.
31:48
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
31:49
[SPEAKER_04]: What you got?
31:58
[SPEAKER_02]: I can't touch I look in glass Can only show you so much Follow the signs Slowly but steady Don't rush That day will come
32:29
[SPEAKER_02]: Just trust Dancing on the astral plane Holy water cleanse and rain Floating through the stratosphere Blime it at sea so clear What is there away Thought you to shine with Out fear
32:57
[SPEAKER_02]: But you can't say what keeps you
33:04
[SPEAKER_02]: Dancing on the edge to play, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah
33:41
[SPEAKER_02]: We're there way, follow you to give it your all.
33:52
[SPEAKER_02]: Dreaming and dream, I've treated things great, or small, dancing on the edge to blind, you know a lot of pins and rings.
34:07
[SPEAKER_02]: If long through the stretch speed, by my edge sea, so clear.
34:11
[SPEAKER_02]: Dancing on the edge of the line, you know they're water-clinsin' right, lean above through the stretch speed, by my edge sea, so clear.
34:22
[SPEAKER_02]: Dancing on the edge of the line, you know they're water-clinsin' right, moving through the stretch speed, by my edge sea, so clear.
34:33
[SPEAKER_02]: By my edge sea,
34:35

35:21
[SPEAKER_01]: I do yeah I have my little brother Patrick say something
35:27
[SPEAKER_01]: He's going to open the show tonight.
35:29
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
35:30
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
35:30
[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to be good.
35:32
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
35:33
[SPEAKER_04]: No, is this the brother that also sings on the record?
35:35
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yes.
35:36
[SPEAKER_01]: Both my brothers.
35:37
[SPEAKER_01]: I have two.
35:37
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
35:38
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm saying on the record.
35:39
[SPEAKER_04]: I saw that any and your father as well.
35:41
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
35:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
35:42
[SPEAKER_04]: Is that just a natural thing?
35:44
[SPEAKER_04]: Like tapping you guys?
35:45
[SPEAKER_04]: Like you guys are going to sing this song?
35:46
[SPEAKER_04]: Or did you want to include the money?
35:48
[SPEAKER_04]: I mean,
35:48
[SPEAKER_01]: Well I had a show at Carnegie Hall and I invited my whole family to come up and my brother sang when they backed me up, I performed some of my songs before they were even recorded on the record and they sounded so good on stage there and my father, when he was alive, he was there and he walked up to the front of Carnegie M with
36:10
[SPEAKER_01]: Dancing and everybody else is seated and you know it's a really strict feeling.
36:15
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I tell the security don't mess with him.
36:17
[SPEAKER_01]: Let him dance and that was such a fun magical night that I wanted to share that with the worlds by putting it on the record So whenever we got to the song shake down I was like I've got to get my brothers and my dad I got to get them all singing on this because they have that voice and they have the magic for the song That's a magical song, too.
36:35
[SPEAKER_04]: That's a ton of fun
36:36
[SPEAKER_04]: And in other people I know it's been talked about a lot but you get Nora Jones on the record friend of the station here Is there anybody else beyond that that I missed?
36:44
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, there's so many amazing musicians.
36:47
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean Andy McClowd, Pete Graham, Dave Dan, I eat and Dave Dan Reaser And I mean New Yorkers mess.
36:57
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see you around the strings.
36:58
[SPEAKER_01]: You should check her out.
36:59
[SPEAKER_01]: She's awesome.
37:00
[SPEAKER_01]: Doug Weisman arranged horns, so I mean the musician list is huge.
37:05
[SPEAKER_01]: The producer Matt Mayor Nellie, Richard Swift, there's so many different things.
37:08
[SPEAKER_01]: We love Swiftie.
37:09
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's so many good people.
37:11
[SPEAKER_04]: It is an interesting how, you know, it just starts with you and a guitar or whatever the instrument is and it turns into, you know, 50 people all working on, you know, this idea that you, you know, pulled out of the ether.
37:24
[SPEAKER_01]: is true.
37:25
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so great.
37:26
[SPEAKER_01]: And that whole art of like taking something that's in the ether and bringing it to earth and putting it in the physical.
37:33
[SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of why I decided to follow a journey because I wanted to learn how to master that that process and that process is in order of time really and you can dedicate your whole life to that.
37:45
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm really glad that you picked this art form.
37:47
[SPEAKER_04]: Thank you.
37:48
[SPEAKER_04]: We're all really good.
37:49
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I still like my paintings so we'll
37:52
