- 0:00Speaker 1: And we welcome you to Bear Smocus Barbecue and Hartford.
- 0:02Speaker 1: It is our last Yukon Hockey Coaches show of the season.
- 0:05Speaker 1: It was supposed to be last week, but mother nature
- 0:08Speaker 1: kind of took care of that. Bob Joyce, Adam Jaredino,
- 0:10Speaker 1: and the head coach of the Hockey Huskies, the ice
- 0:13Speaker 1: Bus aka Mike Cavanaugh is with us. Mister Kavanaugh, good evening.
- 0:16Speaker 1: How are we doing.
- 0:17Speaker 2: We're doing great. How are you guys doing?
- 0:19Speaker 1: We're doing five. Before we get into what happened in overtime,
- 0:23Speaker 1: the UMass series scores are not indicative of how well
- 0:27Speaker 1: your team played, particularly in the offensive end, particularly Saturday night.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Michael Horabo still a weekend for the team for UMass.
- 0:33Speaker 1: He was magnificent. And here we are with a week
- 0:36Speaker 1: to go, two games left, sitting in third, point ahead
- 0:39Speaker 1: of U Mass, point behind BC, top four, looking to
- 0:43Speaker 1: get home ice for the quarterfinals.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, we're in a position right now where, if you
- 0:50Speaker 2: know we went on Thursday night, we're guaranteed another game
- 0:52Speaker 2: in Tuscano. So I think that's a great position to
- 0:55Speaker 2: be in. Uh, you know, I really liked the way
- 1:00Speaker 2: we played this weekend. It's funny. I was telling our
- 1:03Speaker 2: staff that we went up to Maine and I didn't
- 1:06Speaker 2: think we played very well at Maine, and I heard
- 1:09Speaker 2: about that we got five or six points. And then
- 1:12Speaker 2: this weekend, I thought we played really well both nights.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Friday night, the third period got away from us with
- 1:19Speaker 2: special teams, but we still played pretty well, especially five
- 1:24Speaker 2: on five, and then Saturday night might have been one
- 1:27Speaker 2: of our best games of the year.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Second period especially Oh yeah, I.
- 1:31Speaker 2: Mean we had twenty four shots on net in the
- 1:33Speaker 2: second period. I mean that was more than the last
- 1:36Speaker 2: five games combined. I think, you know, for the total
- 1:39Speaker 2: game it was. I was really really happy with the
- 1:43Speaker 2: way we played. And that's the sport of hockey. There's
- 1:46Speaker 2: times where you know, you get five or six points
- 1:50Speaker 2: and you might not deserve it, and then there's a
- 1:51Speaker 2: time where you deserve more and you don't. So the
- 1:55Speaker 2: key is to just continue to play a brand that's
- 2:00Speaker 2: going to be successful in the playoffs, and you have
- 2:04Speaker 2: to be able to continue to I like when we're
- 2:08Speaker 2: creating offense. I don't love when we're winning one nothing
- 2:13Speaker 2: to to one and we have twenty shots on net.
- 2:17Speaker 2: You know, I think if you want to be really successful,
- 2:22Speaker 2: you have to be able to continually get thirty to
- 2:25Speaker 2: forty shots on NET per game. I think.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Because of the point in the season when it happened,
- 2:32Speaker 3: was there a little extra having to remind the players
- 2:35Speaker 3: of how well they played, because it's one thing to
- 2:38Speaker 3: get one point in a weekend in December versus one
- 2:42Speaker 3: point in a weekend when March is right around the corner.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Well, I referenced the class that they replaced, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 2: Jackham and Mark Gackcomb, Carter Turnbull, Johnny Evans, those guys.
- 2:55Speaker 2: I don't know if you guys remember, but when they
- 2:57Speaker 2: were seniors, we had a weekend that against Northeastern and
- 3:02Speaker 2: put over one hundred shots on net and Devin Levi
- 3:05Speaker 2: stole the weekend for them. Oh yeah, and you know
- 3:08Speaker 2: we wound up going to the final game that year.
- 3:11Speaker 2: So it's I know, I know, I get your point
- 3:15Speaker 2: that it's late in the year, and is it magnetized
- 3:19Speaker 2: more because of that. I don't think you can let
- 3:22Speaker 2: it go there. I think you just have to focus
- 3:24Speaker 2: on how you played and then move on.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Mike, you took advantage of a team that was a
- 3:30Speaker 1: little shorthanded on Saturday in UMass, particularly in that second
- 3:33Speaker 1: period first period was back and forth, but the second period,
- 3:36Speaker 1: as we mentioned, probably one of the best periods of
- 3:38Speaker 1: hockey your team played all year. Twenty five to four
- 3:40Speaker 1: were the shots. They got a late goal in the
- 3:43Speaker 1: second to tie the game at two. You go into
- 3:45Speaker 1: the locker room like that, and instead of being up one,
- 3:48Speaker 1: you're even what's what's the mindset there? I mean, I mean,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I imagine the guys are a bit frustrated, so by
- 3:54Speaker 1: the coaching staff as well as you played. It's still even, yeah.
- 3:59Speaker 2: And I think I think great players just have to
- 4:02Speaker 2: move on from it.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Yes, you know.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I told the kids that, you know, everybody in their
- 4:10Speaker 2: life has sawed a piece of wood, and they're like, yeah,
- 4:14Speaker 2: we've all saw a piece of what. I go, have
- 4:15Speaker 2: you ever saw sawdust? They're like, no, go, of course not,
- 4:19Speaker 2: because it's already saw it. It's like it's over with,
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's done with, Like you don't saw sawdust. Move on
- 4:26Speaker 2: that saw dust the second period saw dust, Let's go
- 4:28Speaker 2: play the third period. And that was kind of my
- 4:32Speaker 2: message to them. It's, yeah, we played a great period
- 4:36Speaker 2: and we're two two and we're on the road. Let's
- 4:39Speaker 2: go play a great third period. And I think all
- 4:43Speaker 2: great athletes are able to move on from one shift
- 4:47Speaker 2: to the next without Let you know, one of the
- 4:52Speaker 2: greatest things I ever heard Tom O'Brien as an old
- 4:56Speaker 2: football coach at Boston College and they lost a heartbreaker.
- 5:01Speaker 2: They were going in to beat Miami at home. I
- 5:04Speaker 2: was at the game and Ed Reid intercepted a pass
- 5:08Speaker 2: on the goal line late in the game to end
- 5:11Speaker 2: the game, and his line to the team was, don't
- 5:16Speaker 2: let Miami beat you twice. Basically, it was like, you
- 5:21Speaker 2: can't be thinking about Miami. We got another game next weekend.
- 5:24Speaker 2: That game's over with. Let's move on. I think all
- 5:26Speaker 2: the great athletes are able to put stuff in the
- 5:30Speaker 2: rearview mirror and move on.
- 5:33Speaker 3: The way that the team was able to take that
- 5:34Speaker 3: second period, build it into the third, continue to build offense,
- 5:37Speaker 3: and not let Miami beat them twice? So to speak,
- 5:41Speaker 3: did you get a sense of excitement from the guys
- 5:44Speaker 3: of how well they were playing after that second perier,
- 5:46Speaker 3: even though it was too too Were you getting the
- 5:49Speaker 3: excitement of Okay, we've done this for almost five periods.
- 5:52Speaker 3: Now this weekend, let's just go out there and continue
- 5:55Speaker 3: to play this well.
- 5:57Speaker 2: Ah, I don't think they were. I don't know if
- 6:01Speaker 2: they were excited. I don't think they were down. I
- 6:04Speaker 2: think they were very business like, Yeah, let's let's go
- 6:07Speaker 2: out and win a third period and win a game.
- 6:09Speaker 2: And we go out and went out and scored right
- 6:11Speaker 2: away or early in that third period, and then you know,
- 6:14Speaker 2: they came right back and tied the game. But even
- 6:17Speaker 2: after that, we still played really well. So it just
- 6:22Speaker 2: it happened. Sometimes. I think we have to just focus
- 6:24Speaker 2: more on how we played and not the result.
- 6:28Speaker 1: Right, And we'll talk about who played well coming up later.
- 6:31Speaker 1: We will visit with time used like fabulous interview with Tye.
- 6:34Speaker 1: He was he was really good today. And Trey Scott
- 6:36Speaker 1: was good today too. Really, yes, we had Trey Scott
- 6:38Speaker 1: on today. He was good.
- 6:39Speaker 2: Not the most loquacious guy on our team, but it's okay.
- 6:42Speaker 1: But I got seven and a half minutes.
- 6:47Speaker 2: And oh yeah, no, he played well.
- 6:50Speaker 1: We'll get to Trey and the Huskies when we come back.
- 6:53Speaker 1: We're live at Bear Smoke House Barbecue. It's the Yukon
- 6:55Speaker 1: Hockey Coaches Show here on their field. Back in a minute,
