- 0:00Ground Signal. Markets and Economy. September
- 0:0328, 2026. I'm Tenet. Here's what moved, what
- 0:07it matters, and what you need to watch. The week
- 0:10opened with a single word that reset every risk
- 0:13calculation on the board. Iran. Markets woke
- 0:16up Monday to reports that us Iran peace talks
- 0:18have hit a wall, stalemate, not ceasefire. President
- 0:22Trump reportedly refused to take a further Iranian
- 0:24diplomatic offer off the table over the weekend,
- 0:26but in the same breath would not rule out additional
- 0:29military strikes. That kind of strategic ambiguity
- 0:33has a very direct translation in markets. Risk
- 0:36off, oil up, safe havens under pressure from
- 0:39an unusual direction. The S &P 500 closed Friday,
- 0:43September 25 at 7 ,743, up half a percent on
- 0:47the session, but that number masks what's happening
- 0:49underneath. Breadth was narrow. Big tech carried
- 0:53the index while energy and defensives sat flat.
- 0:55The headline looks calm. The internals are not.
- 0:59Gold, which you'd expect to catch a bid on geopolitical
- 1:01fear, actually fell sharply. Crypto is selling
- 1:05off. Yields are pushing higher. The picture heading
- 1:08into this new week is one of selective stress,
- 1:11not broad panic, but the drivers are real and
- 1:14the stress points are worth understanding precisely.
- 1:17Let's go segment by segment. The S &P 500 closed
- 1:21Friday at 7 ,743 .41, a gain of 39 points or
- 1:26roughly half a percent. As of today, the index
- 1:29is near the top of its 52. Weak range, 6 ,317
- 1:33low, 7 ,817 high, which means we are not far
- 1:37from all -time territory. Three names drove the
- 1:41week. Microsoft, up 3 .66%. Apple, up 1 .53%.
- 1:47NVIDIA, essentially flat at plus 0 .22, large
- 1:50by dollar terms but no catalyst. On the downside,
- 1:53Zscaler, the cybersecurity firm, dropped 10 .06
- 1:57% to $193. And Twilio, the cloud communications
- 2:01platform, fell 7 .96 % to $275 .80. Both declines
- 2:08appear to be valuation -driven sell -offs rather
- 2:10than fundamental breakdowns. ZKaler had just
- 2:13posted fiscal Q4 results with revenue up 25 %
- 2:16year over year. Sometimes a strong print at a
- 2:19stretched multiple is enough for institutions
- 2:22to rotate out. What's the read? Tech leadership
- 2:25is narrowing. The handful of large cap names
- 2:27holding the index up are doing so with less company
- 2:30than earlier this year. That's a structural note
- 2:33worth tracking as Q3 earnings season approaches.
- 2:36Internationally, the Nikkei 225 closed at 65
- 2:40,877 on Monday, a fresh recent high driven by
- 2:45yen weakness and export sector strength. The
- 2:47Hang Seng came in around 24 ,671, still under
- 2:51pressure from the China -U .S. trade truce uncertainty.
- 2:54The Trump -Xi summit extended the tariff pause
- 2:56to January 10, 2027, but no structural deal was
- 3:00reached, and the yuan's slow depreciation continues
- 3:03to weigh on Hong Kong -listed equities. The DAX
- 3:06in Frankfurt was last reported near 25 ,408,
- 3:09holding its range, with European markets watching
- 3:12the Iran situation closely given proximity to
- 3:14supply routes. Signal level, equities, signal
- 3:18two, developing. Narrow breadth at highs is a
- 3:21technical warning. Not urgent, but the margin
- 3:24of error is shrinking. The 10 -year U .S. Treasury
- 3:28yield hit 5 .18 % as of Monday's session. That's
- 3:32a meaningful move. The five, year is at 5 .01%,
- 3:36and the three, month bill is sitting at 4 .07%.
- 3:41What that tells you, the curve is still inverted
- 3:44at the front, but less so than at the peak. The
- 3:46inversion is compressing. The Federal Reserve's
- 3:50next scheduled meeting is October 27 and 28.
- 3:53That's a full two -day meeting with a press conference.
- 3:56The September hike, 25 basis points to the 3
- 3:59.75 to 4 % range. is now a month behind us. Markets
- 4:04are digesting what the October decision looks
- 4:06like, and the answer will depend almost entirely
- 4:09on the October 2nd jobs report. Here's the dynamic.
- 4:13The 10, year at 5 .18%, represents a real policy
- 4:18tightening effect that extends beyond what the
- 4:20Fed directly controls. Mortgage rates, business
- 4:23borrowing costs, and corporate refinancing pressure
- 4:26all track the 10, year. If yields stay elevated
- 4:29going into Q4, corporate earnings guidance will
- 4:32start reflecting that drag and the equity multiple
- 4:35compression risk rises. The BOJ remains on hold
- 4:38at 1 .25 % and the ECB is at 2 .50%. Neither
- 4:43central bank is expected to move before year
- 4:45end. Signal level, fixed income, signal three,
- 4:48material. The 10, year at 5 .18%, is a level
- 4:53that historically begins to bite. Watch the jobs
- 4:56number on Thursday. The dollar is holding a narrow
- 5:00range as competing forces balance out. Iran tensions
- 5:02should strengthen the dollar on safe haven flows.
- 5:05But the same geopolitical risk is pushing oil
- 5:08higher, which pressures import heavy economies
- 5:10and creates cross -currency volatility. EUR slash
- 5:14USD is at 1 .1378, essentially flat, down 0 .14%.
- 5:20The euro remains strong relative to its 2025
- 5:23range. BP slash USD is at 1 .3258, slightly positive.
- 5:29USD slash JPY is at 156 .99, yen weakness persisting,
- 5:35as the Bank of Japan stays on hold and the carry
- 5:38trade continues to attract flows out of Japan.
- 5:41For our nomad audience, the currencies that matter
- 5:44most for geographic mobility. The Philippine
- 5:47peso is at approximately 62 .49 per dollar, stabilizing
- 5:52after recent volatility. Indonesian rupiah is
- 5:55near 17 ,914 to the dollar within recent range.
- 5:59Thai baht is 33 .41. Malaysian ringgit is 4 .09
- 6:04to the dollar, a significant recovery from the
- 6:064 .65 level we were watching in late September.
- 6:10Brazilian real is approximately 5 .19 to the
- 6:13dollar under modest pressure. And the Peruvian
- 6:16sol, our local reference, remains steady around
- 6:19the 3 .36 to 3 .38 range based on recent data.
- 6:23The big picture currency theme, Southeast Asian
- 6:26currencies are in a mild recovery, which reduces
- 6:29dollar -denominated purchasing power slightly.
- 6:32Signal level, FX, signal 2, developing. Crypto
- 6:37is selling off into the jobs report and the Iran
- 6:39standoff. Bitcoin was at $82 ,680 as of Sunday,
- 6:44down 2 .66%. Ethereum is at $2 ,639, down 2 .74%.
- 6:52Solana is at $117 .67, down 5 .36%, the sharpest
- 6:58drop of the three. According to Coindesk, the
- 7:02macro narrative today is straightforward. Crypto
- 7:04traders are de -risking ahead of U .S. employment
- 7:07data due Thursday. Bitcoin futures open interest
- 7:10is near yearly lows, and funding rates are negative,
- 7:13meaning the capital that's still in the market
- 7:15is skewed toward bearish positions. Shorts are
- 7:19paying to be short, which is unusual. Two structural
- 7:22stories are worth tracking. First, Solana ETF
- 7:26inflows just hit a record. According to Coindesk,
- 7:30U .S. spot Solana ETFs drew $188 million in the
- 7:34week ending September 28, with Bitwise capturing
- 7:36roughly two -thirds of that. That's institutional
- 7:39demand building in real time, even as the spot
- 7:42price corrects. Second, BitGet, a major crypto
- 7:46exchange, confirmed a $352 million security incident.
- 7:51CEO Gracie Chen stated the breach occurred through
- 7:53spoofed internal transfers, not a private key
- 7:56compromise. Circle and Tether moved to freeze
- 7:59the hacker's wallet. According to Coindesk, some
- 8:01funds were already moved beyond reach. This is
- 8:04a Signal 3 event for exchange security. California
- 8:07Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 2409
- 8:10on September 27th, banning elected officials
- 8:12from issuing or promoting meme coins. The governor
- 8:15called it the opposite of Trump, a direct shot
- 8:17at the Trump token. The law also bars companies
- 8:20from listing coins that use a public official's
- 8:22likeness. This is the first state -level memocoin
- 8:24legislation in U .S. history. Signal level, crypto
- 8:28overall, signal three, material on the BitGet
- 8:32breach. Bitcoin price action, signal two, developing.
- 8:36Oil is the headline commodity this week, and
- 8:39the driver is the Iran stalemate. According to
- 8:41Market Screener and Reuters' linked coverage,
- 8:44Brent crude was up more than 1 % to 3 % on Monday
- 8:46on reports that US -Iran peace talks are deadlocked
- 8:50and Trump refused to rule out further strikes.
- 8:53Brent is trading in the $99 to $105 range per
- 8:56barrel. The Hormuz signal, which we've tracked
- 8:59since August, was downgraded from signal 5 to
- 9:01signal 4 on September 18 as preliminary talks
- 9:04emerged. Those talks are now stalling. Signal
- 9:074 holds. Middle East crude exports were at 12
- 9:11.8 million barrels per day in September, strong
- 9:14supply, but geopolitical risk premium is not
- 9:16going away. Gold, by contrast, is falling. Spot
- 9:21gold is down roughly 3 .1 % to $4 ,187 per ounce.
- 9:26Silver is down nearly 5%. Here's the counterintuitive
- 9:29dynamic. With the 10 -year yield at 5 .18%, the
- 9:34opportunity cost of holding non -yielding gold
- 9:36is rising. institutional investors are trimming
- 9:39gold positions to capture yield. If yields pull
- 9:42back after the jobs report, expect gold to recover.
- 9:45Signal level, oil, signal four, immediate. Iran
- 9:50stalemate, Hormuz risk active. Gold, signal two,
- 9:53developing. Rate -driven correction, not structural
- 9:56breakdown. Three updates for globally mobile
- 9:59listeners. Thailand's digital nomad visa, the
- 10:02DT5, remains active. Thai embassy guidance updated
- 10:06in September confirms the five -year multiple
- 10:09-entry visa is available for extended stays.
- 10:12Reminder, Thailand revoked the 60 -day visa exemption
- 10:16on September 15th. The DT5 is now the relevant
- 10:19path for stays beyond a short visit. Malaysia's
- 10:22DE Rantau Digital Nomad Pass is experiencing
- 10:24processing delays due to technical issues with
- 10:27MDEC's application system. The program remains
- 10:29open. This is a systems issue, not a policy change.
- 10:33The Philippines' digital nomad visa under Executive
- 10:36Order 86 is now live in the official Evisa system.
- 10:39Remote work for foreign clients is the intended
- 10:41use case. Three developments to watch over the
- 10:44next 24 to 72 hours. 1. U .S. jobs report, October
- 10:492, 8 .30 a .m. Eastern, Signal 4, immediate.
- 10:52The Bureau of Labor Statistics releases the September
- 10:55employment situation on Thursday morning. Consensus
- 10:58is approximately 90 ,000 to 100 ,000 nonfarm
- 11:01payrolls. If the number exceeds 120 ,000, expect
- 11:05Fed hike odds to spike and yields to push higher.
- 11:08A miss below 70 ,000 and the pivot trade reignites.
- 11:122. Hormuz and Iran geopolitical track. Ongoing.
- 11:16Signal 4. Immediate. The U .S.-Iran stalemate
- 11:20is the most consequential geopolitical variable
- 11:23in energy markets. Any confirmed escalation,
- 11:26additional strikes, Houthi resumption of tanker
- 11:28attacks, or Iranian Navy activity near the Strait
- 11:31of Hormuz would push Brent toward or above $110.
- 11:35Watch for statements from the State Department
- 11:38and Iranian Foreign Ministry over the next 48
- 11:40hours. 3. FOMC October 27 -28 Trajectory, Signal
- 11:463, Material The October jobs report is the final
- 11:50major data point before the Fed's October meeting.
- 11:52The dot plot from September showed the 2027 median
- 11:56rate at 3 .6%, the strongest pivot signal the
- 11:59committee has sent. But that pivot is conditional
- 12:02on labor market softening. If jobs remain resilient,
- 12:05the hike cycle has not definitively ended. That's
- 12:08the signal for September 28, 2026. Iran's stalemate
- 12:12is driving oil and suppressing crypto. The jobs
- 12:15report Thursday is the fulcrum for rate direction.
- 12:17Gold is correcting on yield pressure, not on
- 12:20reduced risk. Solana ETFs are posting records
- 12:22even as the spot market sells off. institutional
- 12:25accumulation diverging from retail sentiment.
- 12:28This is Tenet, Ground Signal. The next briefing
- 12:30comes when conditions warrant it. Stay calibrated.
