- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to Wired to Hunts rut Fresh Radio, bringing you
- 0:05Speaker 1: the latest reports from the White Tailed Woods and now
- 0:09Speaker 1: your hosts, Casey Smith Tyler Jones. This is rut Fresh
- 0:13Speaker 1: Radio powered by Vortics Optics across the country. Things are
- 0:16Speaker 1: changing the ruts. Some places in full swing, some places's
- 0:19Speaker 1: tape ring off, and we have new seasons coming in.
- 0:22Speaker 1: You can either embrace the changes or brace for the changes.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Either one, it's time to get in the woods. Welcome
- 0:37Speaker 1: to the rut Fresh Radio podcast. I'm your host Casey Smith.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Tyler Jones is on the couch here and me and
- 0:43Speaker 1: we have another special super special appearance of the one
- 0:47Speaker 1: and only chocoed deer hunter Mark Kenyon. What's up, bro?
- 0:52Speaker 1: I'm just telling you that if someone made shock gos
- 0:55Speaker 1: and camouflage, they would absolutely kill in the field. All right.
- 1:01Speaker 1: I think there's people never mind, No, there's not. I
- 1:04Speaker 1: don't know that. I don't know people who would wear those. Actually,
- 1:08Speaker 1: how do they do with climbing sticks? That's the thing
- 1:10Speaker 1: I would be concerned about. You know, like, well that
- 1:12Speaker 1: the functionality is something you're gonna know about. So tell
- 1:15Speaker 1: you that's the thing is chockos Like for those who
- 1:17Speaker 1: don't know. Chacos are like heavy duty sandals, either like
- 1:21Speaker 1: flip flops or there's a version that kind of goes
- 1:23Speaker 1: like straps over the top of your foot and stuff
- 1:25Speaker 1: like that. And they're made for hiking, rafting, fishing, that
- 1:29Speaker 1: kind of stuff. So they actually have a really thick
- 1:32Speaker 1: and really grippy, uh soul that you could go like
- 1:36Speaker 1: rock climbing and stuff. And so yeah, I can go
- 1:37Speaker 1: up the climbing sticks. I could sit up there company
- 1:40Speaker 1: as can be. I'll hike back two miles on public
- 1:42Speaker 1: land and I'll hunt you guys in my sands. I
- 1:46Speaker 1: can vouch that you will hike two miles real quick too.
- 1:50Speaker 1: It's true. You've seen it long shrides. How long shrides.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I've had to keep up with that man. Uh you know.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I tried chocos one time and I was in Washington State.
- 2:02Speaker 1: My wife had bottom for me, and I thought these
- 2:04Speaker 1: would be pretty good for fishing maybe, And they ate
- 2:08Speaker 1: my feet up so bad that like I had a
- 2:11Speaker 1: hole in my foot for six months. I don't know
- 2:14Speaker 1: what it was with the straps just destroyed my feet.
- 2:16Speaker 1: So I never won again. I do feel like there's
- 2:19Speaker 1: like a breaking period for your feet like especially if
- 2:22Speaker 1: you're wearing the ones that are like the fully strapped
- 2:24Speaker 1: ones that you do need your feet to kind of
- 2:26Speaker 1: like adjust to them and like develop us a little
- 2:29Speaker 1: bit of like a rough spot or something. You know, Yeah,
- 2:31Speaker 1: your feet have the rough spots for sure. You used
- 2:37Speaker 1: to know that a side it's just like tan, just
- 2:42Speaker 1: like tan leather, like a good it looks like an elephant.
- 2:45Speaker 1: You ever seen how when the elephant foot flexes when
- 2:47Speaker 1: it hits the ground. That's what you're the size of
- 2:49Speaker 1: your feet. Like, So are we talking about what we
- 2:53Speaker 1: can we can other people do that? You know in
- 2:55Speaker 1: a little bit. You have deer hunted though, right, just
- 2:59Speaker 1: not in chocolates, like, but you have not in Chaco.
- 3:02Speaker 1: But I have been deer hunting. I hunted the last
- 3:06Speaker 1: oh three or four days of the bow season in
- 3:08Speaker 1: Michigan and then hunted the last three days um proceeding
- 3:15Speaker 1: this conversation there during gun season. So yeah, we've been
- 3:18Speaker 1: out there, have been getting some interesting weather, and uh
- 3:21Speaker 1: have been you know, seeing some of that mid November
- 3:24Speaker 1: type of action you might expect that lockdown And and
- 3:27Speaker 1: now we're starting to shift into like that second phase,
- 3:30Speaker 1: that second half of the rut and stuff is gonna
- 3:32Speaker 1: be changing here against into So it's Michigan state where
- 3:35Speaker 1: they force you to use the weapon that the season
- 3:39Speaker 1: is issued as, or can you use a lesser weapon?
- 3:41Speaker 1: You can use a lesser weapon. How do you treat
- 3:43Speaker 1: that personally? I personally am not bow only kind of dude.
- 3:49Speaker 1: So I will use whatever is legal and whatever is
- 3:51Speaker 1: most convenient or enjoyable. So what that means is that
- 3:55Speaker 1: I'm using a bow when it's bow season, but when
- 3:58Speaker 1: it's gun season, I'm using you know, uh, rifle. And
- 4:02Speaker 1: in muzzleo our season, they actually have changed the rules
- 4:06Speaker 1: in our part of Michigan and you can actually use
- 4:08Speaker 1: any legal firearm in certain parts of the state during
- 4:12Speaker 1: muzzle over season, um, because of c w D issues.
- 4:16Speaker 1: So if I'm hunting in one of those regions, I'll
- 4:18Speaker 1: use the rifle too. UM. So I'm not not to
- 4:22Speaker 1: give for that. We probably aren't either. I do a
- 4:25Speaker 1: lot abou hunting because it's just like being close, you know.
- 4:27Speaker 1: But Texas has such a liberal gun season that, uh,
- 4:31Speaker 1: you know, if you played by those rules, you'd end
- 4:32Speaker 1: up gun hunting for like three months straight, you know. So,
- 4:36Speaker 1: but I just kind of wonder you know, growing up,
- 4:38Speaker 1: tactics changed drastically when you went from riffle to bow,
- 4:42Speaker 1: and I wonder if that's how it works for YouTube
- 4:44Speaker 1: up there, you know, yes and no. Um, it opens
- 4:49Speaker 1: up new possibilities, you know, when I know that I
- 4:52Speaker 1: can stretch out there and shoot. You know, we're a
- 4:54Speaker 1: gun hunt. Most of my gun hunting is in the
- 4:56Speaker 1: southern part of the States. You can't use a UM
- 5:00Speaker 1: every rifle. You've got to use a straight wall cartridge
- 5:03Speaker 1: if you're going to use that, or use a slug
- 5:04Speaker 1: gun or a muzzleloaders, so you're not shooting super super
- 5:07Speaker 1: far anyways. UM. But you know, I'll stretch out and
- 5:10Speaker 1: be like, okay, I I could you know, be in
- 5:13Speaker 1: the game at a hundred hundred and fifty yards something
- 5:15Speaker 1: like that, where you know, with my bow, I've got
- 5:18Speaker 1: to be you know, I'm trying to be within thirty
- 5:20Speaker 1: or forty whatever it is. So it opens up a
- 5:23Speaker 1: few new possibilities for me. But I don't just hunt,
- 5:26Speaker 1: you know, some big, wide open field and a box
- 5:28Speaker 1: blind expecting to kill a big giant buck. If I'm
- 5:31Speaker 1: after you know, I'm mature buck. It's usually still pushing
- 5:35Speaker 1: back on the edges of cover still pushing back in
- 5:38Speaker 1: those spots that I'd be bow hunting. But now I'm
- 5:40Speaker 1: just able to have a little bit more grace. I'm
- 5:42Speaker 1: able to set up in a spot that I have
- 5:45Speaker 1: less risk of blown him out of town or getting
- 5:48Speaker 1: winded by other doors and and still being in the game.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Like the poop line. The poop line is a good
- 5:54Speaker 1: example that and it worked out swimmingly. Can you talk
- 6:00Speaker 1: about what's your what what did your rifle setup look
- 6:03Speaker 1: like for deer? So I've got a couple I've got,
- 6:08Speaker 1: uh like my Northern Michigan gun, which is just a
- 6:11Speaker 1: thirty at six UM, but that's more of a UM
- 6:16Speaker 1: passed down from Grandpa gun, So it's not it's customized
- 6:19Speaker 1: for the situation or something. That's just my grandpa's old
- 6:21Speaker 1: thirty at six that he gave me that I like
- 6:23Speaker 1: to use up there, and then down in southern Michigan,
- 6:27Speaker 1: where I've got to use a straight wall cartridge. I've
- 6:29Speaker 1: got a three fifty legend UM, which is, you know,
- 6:34Speaker 1: a nice, nice, easy shooting quiet, not a lot of recoil,
- 6:39Speaker 1: single shot, just a little tack driver UM. So it's
- 6:44Speaker 1: not fancy, but it's like my hundred and fifty yard gun.
- 6:47Speaker 1: That's just sweet. So that's why I use my local
- 6:50Speaker 1: stuff that's down there in the southern part of the state. Cool.
- 6:53Speaker 1: That's pretty slick man. Well, I uh, I've been still
- 6:58Speaker 1: just bow hunting, you know, or even though rifles open,
- 7:01Speaker 1: so's the purest you know, it's a it's a weird
- 7:09Speaker 1: thing that maybe most people don't think about, but um
- 7:12Speaker 1: uh YouTube people that work at YouTube, like, uh, they
- 7:17Speaker 1: don't like guns all these so it's a kind of
- 7:20Speaker 1: a difficult thing when you produce videos to trade the
- 7:24Speaker 1: bow in and hopes that YouTube is okay with you
- 7:27Speaker 1: shooting something with a gun, you know. So I never
- 7:31Speaker 1: thought yep, that's why, you know, because we pretty much
- 7:34Speaker 1: video every single thing we do. And so, um, yeah,
- 7:38Speaker 1: it's it's a odd thing that uh we have to
- 7:40Speaker 1: be careful of, I guess. So. And two round here
- 7:44Speaker 1: is like if you wanted to shooting you with a gun,
- 7:48Speaker 1: you probably could. So like I like to hunt and
- 7:52Speaker 1: be out there quite a bit, so like the bow
- 7:54Speaker 1: kind of limits me and lets me hunt a little more. Uh.
- 7:58Speaker 1: So he's a limited So I've been hearing actually, and
- 8:05Speaker 1: if you put the bottom pain at the top of
- 8:07Speaker 1: the bag, you know. But I get what you're saying.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I get what you're saying about the self limits. And
- 8:13Speaker 1: you know, if I was hunting, you know, I don't know,
- 8:16Speaker 1: some mega managed, awesome farm where there was a whole
- 8:19Speaker 1: bunch of shooter bucks and I would be finishing off
- 8:22Speaker 1: my season right away if they had the gun. You know,
- 8:24Speaker 1: I probably would stick with the boat too. But I know,
- 8:26Speaker 1: like you know, for example, in Michigan, like, I've got
- 8:29Speaker 1: a very very tiny chance of killing a buck that
- 8:32Speaker 1: I'm after, even with the guns. So it's it's still
- 8:34Speaker 1: gonna be a big chance. Like honestly, if I had
- 8:37Speaker 1: to bet, like with the spots I have to hunt
- 8:39Speaker 1: right now, you know, there might be one night in
- 8:42Speaker 1: the next month and a half where that buck will
- 8:45Speaker 1: come out, and so I'm gonna have to be very
- 8:46Speaker 1: very lucky to be there and to have him and range,
- 8:50Speaker 1: even with you know, a hundred fifty yard range man
- 8:54Speaker 1: like um, you know, being able to like people. Um.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You know that in in the hunting space, there's a
- 9:02Speaker 1: lot of uh, I guess, banter about you know, what's
- 9:06Speaker 1: the right way to do things? Ethics, you know, what
- 9:09Speaker 1: are ethics even really and Um, it's just interesting that
- 9:13Speaker 1: you say that because I feel like that a lot
- 9:15Speaker 1: of people should spend more time thinking about, um, you know,
- 9:21Speaker 1: self limiting. I guess a little bit like what do
- 9:23Speaker 1: you want out of the out of the hunt and
- 9:25Speaker 1: and how can you manage that with your like the
- 9:29Speaker 1: time of year you hunt, slash the weapon you hunt west,
- 9:31Speaker 1: slash the blind you sit in or whatever you know,
- 9:35Speaker 1: And yeah, yeah, I think like that's something to think about, right, Like, um,
- 9:40Speaker 1: some guys uh work really hard and get five days
- 9:44Speaker 1: a year, so maybe it's okay that they hunt with
- 9:46Speaker 1: the rifle and you know, or a crossbow or whatever.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So how much meat you have? That's the thing that
- 9:50Speaker 1: I'm in right now. You know, I've shot a couple
- 9:52Speaker 1: of bucks, and I shot at Elk and September, so um,
- 9:56Speaker 1: you know, I don't really have to go out there
- 9:57Speaker 1: and blast one, you know, and get there and sit
- 9:59Speaker 1: and enjoy and be kind of um picky about what
- 10:02Speaker 1: a shoot at, you know, and and just kind of
- 10:04Speaker 1: enjoy the opportunity. Yeah, I'm with you. I feel like,
- 10:08Speaker 1: you know, we talked about this, uh and so our
- 10:10Speaker 1: other conversations well the course of this year. But you know,
- 10:13Speaker 1: my one of my big goals this year was just
- 10:16Speaker 1: to get back to doing what's fun, like not doing
- 10:19Speaker 1: the thing that people that I think people think I
- 10:21Speaker 1: should do, not doing the thing that other people want
- 10:24Speaker 1: me to do, not doing something because I feel pressured
- 10:26Speaker 1: for this reason or that, but just going out and
- 10:28Speaker 1: having fun. So if that means that I'm gonna go
- 10:30Speaker 1: to my family deer camp for four days and not
- 10:33Speaker 1: have a chance to shoot anything really, but you know,
- 10:35Speaker 1: get to do something awesome my son, well I'm gonna
- 10:37Speaker 1: do that. And if it means I'm gonna, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: whatever else it is, I just feel like this year,
- 10:42Speaker 1: leaning into that has has taken pressure off and and
- 10:47Speaker 1: and made it so much more enjoyable. And because of that,
- 10:50Speaker 1: I think I've had You know that that has maybe
- 10:52Speaker 1: in part led to some of the success I've had.
- 10:54Speaker 1: And you're a pioneer in this space, man, And like
- 10:57Speaker 1: I appreciate you saying this right now because I think it's, uh,
- 11:00Speaker 1: you're a leader, man, and it's it's good for people
- 11:02Speaker 1: to hear. I think it's uh something to think about.
- 11:05Speaker 1: Where um. Because I actually had a conversation with the
- 11:07Speaker 1: guy the other day, a friend of mine who's who
- 11:10Speaker 1: shot a deer, couldn't find it, tracked it for six
- 11:13Speaker 1: yards crossing another property, he got permission all this stuff,
- 11:16Speaker 1: never found it, and he's really bummed out because it's
- 11:18Speaker 1: happened a couple of times recently to him. And you know,
- 11:22Speaker 1: he said, I just embarrassed, man. You know, like people
- 11:24Speaker 1: are smoking deer right now and I'm shooting another one
- 11:27Speaker 1: that I can't find, you know. And I was like,
- 11:29Speaker 1: who are you talking about? People? Because is this Instagram?
- 11:32Speaker 1: Because you're only going to see the good stuff and
- 11:34Speaker 1: you're only gonna feel these expectations from the people who
- 11:37Speaker 1: are you know, I don't know talking talking heads of
- 11:41Speaker 1: hunting or whatever. You know. It's like, uh so, like again,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I appreciate you saying it. As a leader in the space, man,
- 11:48Speaker 1: it it uh helps people to think about this stuff rightly.
- 11:51Speaker 1: I think, Yeah, I think we all just gotta hunt
- 11:53Speaker 1: our own hunts and have fun and and then just
- 11:58Speaker 1: stop worrying about all the other noise out there and
- 12:01Speaker 1: social media and the media and and all that kind
- 12:04Speaker 1: of stuff. We just we just gotta get back to
- 12:06Speaker 1: doing it for your own reasons, in your own way.
- 12:10Speaker 1: And um and man, it's such an awesome thing. It's
- 12:13Speaker 1: a shame for all these other outside worries to to
- 12:17Speaker 1: cloud that. So man, Ted Nugent says that you can't
- 12:19Speaker 1: do this in France, you know what I mean, he's right.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I'll give him that. He's right on that part. Nos
- 12:25Speaker 1: do you fella Michigander. He's all about it, you know.
- 12:31Speaker 1: You know, I'll tell you what. My son absolutely loves
- 12:36Speaker 1: that song, Fred Bear. So we frequently have Ted Nugent
- 12:39Speaker 1: top of mind in my truck because we're jamming out.
- 12:42Speaker 1: So if I bumped into news and at the gas
- 12:45Speaker 1: station one of these days, I'll always give my firm
- 12:47Speaker 1: handshake and a hug. That's good. Oh man, that's cool. Well, um,
- 12:52Speaker 1: you talked about a lot of opportunities you've had lately.
- 12:55Speaker 1: We've had some opportunities as well, and across the country,
- 12:57Speaker 1: opportunities are opening up with you know, the rut coming
- 13:01Speaker 1: in in the South, it's a pretty exciting time for people,
- 13:03Speaker 1: you know, and honestly, I know up in the North country,
- 13:05Speaker 1: it's a good time of year to kill it here
- 13:08Speaker 1: because they start kind of coming off that lockdown and
- 13:10Speaker 1: into kind of that postseason type pattern, hitting foods, horses
- 13:13Speaker 1: and stuff. So we've got a few hundreds from around
- 13:16Speaker 1: the country who are gonna give us the report. This week,
- 13:18Speaker 1: we got Jimmy Shyry in Pennsylvania, Patrick pay Singer in Tennessee,
- 13:22Speaker 1: Graham Crowning with a report from Wisconsin, and Daniel Powell
- 13:26Speaker 1: from down south in Alabama. He's gonna tell us about
- 13:28Speaker 1: a deer. He's big deer he shot down there too. So, uh,
- 13:31Speaker 1: thanks are happening all across the country, man, and uh,
- 13:34Speaker 1: I'm pretty excited about it. We're about to go hunt
- 13:36Speaker 1: with her buddy Clay up in Arkansas, and once we
- 13:39Speaker 1: get done with that, we're gonna hunt with old Mark
- 13:41Speaker 1: Kenyon in Texas. As. We've been kind of alluding to
- 13:43Speaker 1: here for a few weeks. It's gonna be the super
- 13:46Speaker 1: Bowl of the year. Boys, I've been looking forward to
- 13:48Speaker 1: it for months. It's gonna be the peak of our seasons.
- 13:51Speaker 1: All Right. We're in the top. We're on the top
- 13:53Speaker 1: all the crazy stuff you've been doing across the rest
- 13:55Speaker 1: of the country, and we're gonna tear it up wherever
- 13:58Speaker 1: the heck of Texas. We're going better start eating some
- 14:00Speaker 1: classy food you can get a little bit of, you know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I mean a little bit of you know, your get
- 14:06Speaker 1: your belly ready for it basically, you know, and I
- 14:08Speaker 1: know that also the the taste budge, you know, I
- 14:10Speaker 1: don't want you to be thinking our ketchup as spicy
- 14:13Speaker 1: now here, dude, you don't you know you're love it.
- 14:16Speaker 1: You want your contact point to be the same on
- 14:19Speaker 1: your bow, you know, Like I'd hate for like you
- 14:21Speaker 1: to eat a jalapeno and your mouth swell up and
- 14:23Speaker 1: then it's kind of weird, you know, so that's your face,
- 14:27Speaker 1: Stop marking. I guess I'm I'm I don't know. I
- 14:31Speaker 1: feel like I'm the guy that likes spicy food up here,
- 14:34Speaker 1: but you are. You are kind of getting me worried
- 14:36Speaker 1: to see if like the baseline like what spicy and
- 14:39Speaker 1: Michigan maybe is not spicy in Texas, So I maybe
- 14:42Speaker 1: am in for a whole world to hurt. I don't know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but it tastes. I can tell you the taste will
- 14:47Speaker 1: be good. How much like mild saucea taco bell spicy? Right? Ah? Yeah,
- 14:54Speaker 1: totally that's actually what we use, uh, you know as
- 14:58Speaker 1: as most condiments is just the miles had every Mexican
- 15:02Speaker 1: favorite restaurant you get chips and mild taco bell sauce.
- 15:05Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta tell you this. I don't like
- 15:07Speaker 1: to throw further under the bus, but further gets mild
- 15:10Speaker 1: saucea tacola. I'm not getting ill. Yeah, So to throw
- 15:18Speaker 1: a little hunt and kick on it here still mark.
- 15:21Speaker 1: How many deer have you killed from the ground, sir? Ever? Yeah?
- 15:25Speaker 1: Or like, um say you like, not in a blind
- 15:28Speaker 1: you know, just kind of like Mano imano on the
- 15:30Speaker 1: ground with a deer. I don't know, a handful, Okay, cool.
- 15:35Speaker 1: So I don't know if you know that or not,
- 15:36Speaker 1: but our hunt is gonna be pretty much a hundred
- 15:38Speaker 1: percent on the ground, just kind of in the brush.
- 15:40Speaker 1: So I'm kind of excited about that aspect of it,
- 15:44Speaker 1: and I hope you are too. So yeah, I killed
- 15:48Speaker 1: all of my dear last year from the ground without
- 15:51Speaker 1: a blind actually really yeah, but those were mostly with
- 15:55Speaker 1: a gun. This will be with a bow, So be
- 15:57Speaker 1: a little different around in there, dude, in my sandals,
- 16:04Speaker 1: you actually probably get away with it. Outside the prinkle pair. Yeah,
- 16:07Speaker 1: there's this thing called chola cactus. You ever heard of that?
- 16:10Speaker 1: I have heard of it. Yeah, yeah, so be ready.
- 16:12Speaker 1: It's gonna be funny. Actually, you probably encounter some of
- 16:14Speaker 1: that in some of your cou's deer hunting. I would imagine,
- 16:17Speaker 1: so very similar to some of that. So I'm excited, gentlemen.
- 16:22Speaker 1: I'm excited till Mark. Let's uh get to these interviews
- 16:25Speaker 1: so we can get to that hunt pretty soon. Let's
- 16:27Speaker 1: do it. This is Graham Crowning with Vortex Optics, has
- 16:32Speaker 1: been out doing some hunting in Wisconsin, his home state there. Graham,
- 16:37Speaker 1: what's happening, dude? Not too much, Casey? How are you doing? Man?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Doing well? I kind of getting over the sickness. I
- 16:43Speaker 1: think a lot of guys struggle with this though you
- 16:44Speaker 1: can tell me if you have ever dealt with this,
- 16:46Speaker 1: But like, you almost get run down during November because
- 16:49Speaker 1: you're eating kind of junkie food and you're out in
- 16:51Speaker 1: the cold lot and not sleeping normal schedule, and it's
- 16:54Speaker 1: just like your immune system catches up with you. You
- 16:56Speaker 1: ever feel that way, Oh, I absolutely feel that way.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I get that way. Turkey season, deer season I turned into,
- 17:03Speaker 1: for lack of better term, a piece of garbage with
- 17:05Speaker 1: just the jump food, energy drinks. But hey, you get
- 17:07Speaker 1: through it, man. That's the black rafel uh, you know, coffee,
- 17:11Speaker 1: drinks in some cases, pizza. You know, it feels good
- 17:13Speaker 1: at the moment that it catches up with you, you know,
- 17:15Speaker 1: so yeah, hold on you after a couple of weeks
- 17:17Speaker 1: of it, that's right, man. So, how how has the
- 17:20Speaker 1: hunting been up in Wisconsin? The hunting has been really
- 17:23Speaker 1: good here. You know, like a lot of the country
- 17:25Speaker 1: experience that, um, you know, really ab normally hot beginning
- 17:29Speaker 1: to November, which you know historically, you know, that's kind
- 17:32Speaker 1: of where I put you know, my bed on the
- 17:34Speaker 1: killing a buck. But it kind of pushed a lot
- 17:36Speaker 1: of that daytime movement back a little bit too. You know,
- 17:39Speaker 1: around the around the tenth of November, we had a
- 17:42Speaker 1: pretty big temp drop. It dropped from seventy to about
- 17:46Speaker 1: over night, and I mean after that it was like
- 17:49Speaker 1: lights on. They were just running like crazy. So it's
- 17:51Speaker 1: been pretty hot and heavy here. Yeah, it's cool. So
- 17:54Speaker 1: it's it's still kind of going how you still seeing
- 17:57Speaker 1: quite a bit of movement, chasing and that kind of
- 17:59Speaker 1: thing in the past week. Yeah, we've been seeing a
- 18:01Speaker 1: lot of chasing still going on. I'd say it's kind
- 18:04Speaker 1: of starting to tamper down a little bit. I'd say
- 18:06Speaker 1: we're probably getting close to that lockdown phase of it. Um. Plus,
- 18:09Speaker 1: our gun season just opened up, and you know, with
- 18:12Speaker 1: all that pressure of the Orange Army out there, definitely
- 18:14Speaker 1: takes a toll and kind of pushes down to some
- 18:16Speaker 1: of that daytime movement. But yeah, I've got it looks
- 18:19Speaker 1: good right now. How do you kind of approach that
- 18:22Speaker 1: pressure from the gun season stuff? Do you embrace it
- 18:24Speaker 1: or do you kind of not look forward to it?
- 18:26Speaker 1: How does that work? Yeah, it's kind of one of
- 18:28Speaker 1: those things. You know, it's out of your control, right,
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's what it is. So you can either figure your
- 18:32Speaker 1: way around it, or you know, you can sit inside
- 18:34Speaker 1: and wind about it. So there's definitely some spots where
- 18:36Speaker 1: you can find some unpressured pieces and you know, do
- 18:39Speaker 1: all of that otherwise. You know a lot of times
- 18:41Speaker 1: I like to bank on you know, I know what
- 18:43Speaker 1: neighbors are gonna be kind of doing what in their
- 18:45Speaker 1: hunt style, So I can kind of use that to
- 18:48Speaker 1: my advantage of knowing if they're going to start pushing
- 18:49Speaker 1: to year round and you know where those doll bed.
- 18:52Speaker 1: The more information like that you can have, I mean,
- 18:54Speaker 1: you can set yourself up to still be super successful
- 18:56Speaker 1: this time of year. Yeah, so our our deer drives
- 18:59Speaker 1: like a pretty big thing up there in Wisconsin. Yeah,
- 19:02Speaker 1: oh yeah. That's definitely the popular way to hunt, especially
- 19:05Speaker 1: for those guys that are, you know, maybe only hunting
- 19:07Speaker 1: that opening weekend where they've got two days to get
- 19:09Speaker 1: it done. You know, they can't wait for a deer
- 19:11Speaker 1: to walk by. They kind of got to force the
- 19:13Speaker 1: issue a little bit. So I'd say definitely that second day.
- 19:16Speaker 1: You know, sometimes a lot of people sit that first
- 19:18Speaker 1: day and then that second day if they don't have something,
- 19:20Speaker 1: they're going in and pushing through. So would you would you?
- 19:24Speaker 1: Would you? Do you like hunting when deer drives are
- 19:27Speaker 1: going on like that? Does that you feel like that
- 19:29Speaker 1: gives you an advantage where you sit. I mean it's
- 19:32Speaker 1: tough to predict what it's gonna do, because I mean
- 19:35Speaker 1: they could kick something up and you could all of
- 19:36Speaker 1: a sudden, have you know, ten screaming deer running by you,
- 19:39Speaker 1: or you know, they could just blow the place up.
- 19:41Speaker 1: You never see anything, and you know they could kind
- 19:43Speaker 1: of put damper on that area for a couple of days.
- 19:46Speaker 1: So it's one of those things, like I said, you
- 19:48Speaker 1: kind of just gotta roll with it more than anything. Um,
- 19:51Speaker 1: A lot of the spots where I go, you can
- 19:52Speaker 1: kind of tend to get away from some of that pressure.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You know, if you kind of bomb into some of
- 19:56Speaker 1: those deeper areas where you know the average guy is
- 19:59Speaker 1: not gonna get into it. Can you can definitely use
- 20:01Speaker 1: those deer drives to your advantage. What's the what's the
- 20:04Speaker 1: way to stop a deer that's screaming by you? Oh man?
- 20:07Speaker 1: Because y'all, hey at it are just a smoke, you
- 20:11Speaker 1: know that? God? Yeah, yeah, yeah, those tend to work
- 20:14Speaker 1: pretty good too. But yeah, I want to think you
- 20:17Speaker 1: gotta throw the whole kitchen sink at them to get
- 20:19Speaker 1: them to stop. Sometimes you know you got the shot
- 20:22Speaker 1: in the running. If you gotta do it, you gotta
- 20:23Speaker 1: do it. There you go, there you go. You practice
- 20:25Speaker 1: for for a reason, right, It's right, that's right. I
- 20:28Speaker 1: got a big buck hunter downstairs for a reason. Let's go.
- 20:32Speaker 1: It's hilarious. So, um, let's talk about maybe a set
- 20:37Speaker 1: up or a tactic for whenever there is that big pressure.
- 20:40Speaker 1: Are you trying to find like funnels and escape routes
- 20:44Speaker 1: whenever that kind of stuff's going on? Are you just
- 20:46Speaker 1: trying to find the thickest stuff you can. That way,
- 20:48Speaker 1: you're just kind of in a sanctuary or what does
- 20:50Speaker 1: that look like? Yeah, kind of a mixture of the
- 20:52Speaker 1: two and kind of depends on the property. But yeah,
- 20:54Speaker 1: definitely finding those funnels, um where you think that they
- 20:57Speaker 1: could run through, and you know, if you kind of
- 20:59Speaker 1: have an idea of what that party or that neighbor
- 21:01Speaker 1: is gonna do, um, you can kind of set up
- 21:03Speaker 1: based on that. Otherwise I'd like to find some thick
- 21:06Speaker 1: bedding cover. I mean, if the doors are gonna be there,
- 21:09Speaker 1: especially with how things have kind of shaken out this year,
- 21:12Speaker 1: you know, there's still some hot doors running around. So
- 21:14Speaker 1: if you can find those betting areas, even if they're
- 21:16Speaker 1: not you know, pushing dear, you know, there's still a
- 21:18Speaker 1: really good chance that you get a buck just cruising
- 21:20Speaker 1: by checking those areas. Yeah, cool man, that sounds like
- 21:23Speaker 1: a good strategy, and I think you are ready to
- 21:25Speaker 1: rock and roll. You still have a tag left, right, yep?
- 21:28Speaker 1: So I filled my archery tag here in Wisconsin, so
- 21:30Speaker 1: I still have my rifle tag though, So I've got
- 21:34Speaker 1: six more days of the rifle season here. Yeah, so yeah,
- 21:38Speaker 1: hopefully we can get done nice man. That's cool. So
- 21:40Speaker 1: if you had to look forward to the next week,
- 21:42Speaker 1: you're kind of three the Thanksgiving holiday and had to
- 21:45Speaker 1: rank buck movement on the scale of one to tea
- 21:47Speaker 1: in what would you call it? Yeah, so, I definitely
- 21:50Speaker 1: think it's gonna be slowing down a little bit from
- 21:52Speaker 1: what we've seen in the past week, but it's not
- 21:54Speaker 1: gonna be terrible. I'd put it probably around a six,
- 21:57Speaker 1: just with the gun season pressure, and I think they're
- 22:00Speaker 1: into starting to get, like I said, a little bit
- 22:02Speaker 1: into that lockdown phase. I think they're gonna start slowing
- 22:04Speaker 1: a little bit of that movement. But I mean, like
- 22:06Speaker 1: I said, anything can happen this time of year. Yeah,
- 22:08Speaker 1: six is a good number, man. I mean that's a
- 22:10Speaker 1: good hunting day if you're thinking about you know, uh,
- 22:13Speaker 1: the realistic terms, and uh we also call that the
- 22:15Speaker 1: mid Midwest six now because all you Midwest. He's love
- 22:18Speaker 1: to say six, I think because you're kind of like
- 22:20Speaker 1: barely optimistic, but you don't want to give it too
- 22:22Speaker 1: much credit, you know. So it's a coming answer. Yeah,
- 22:24Speaker 1: it's not. It's not a complete downer where you're like,
- 22:26Speaker 1: I'm not going out, but it's still enough to do
- 22:28Speaker 1: some Yeah, that's like the you know how the Wisconsin
- 22:31Speaker 1: Badgers do at the beginning of the season, right, they
- 22:33Speaker 1: kind of win a couple of games to get you
- 22:34Speaker 1: going and then let you down later right too soon.
- 22:39Speaker 1: I'm sorry, man, Man. We appreciate the report, dude, and
- 22:42Speaker 1: I hope you do find some success very soon, sir.
- 22:46Speaker 1: They appreciate it, guys. Good luck to you out there
- 22:49Speaker 1: all right now on the phone, I've got Daniel Powell.
- 22:52Speaker 1: He's a realtor from Alabama, and he just shot a
- 22:55Speaker 1: buck that I think would make most dudes and most
- 22:57Speaker 1: states pretty jealous. How's it going, Daniel, It's coming pretty good.
- 23:01Speaker 1: How you doing talking? I'm doing well, man, I'm I'm
- 23:05Speaker 1: you know, a little worn out from the hunt this morning,
- 23:06Speaker 1: but um, and it wasn't quite as successful as you've
- 23:10Speaker 1: had lately. But tell me a little bit about the
- 23:12Speaker 1: buck man and and uh what was he doing? I mean,
- 23:15Speaker 1: I kinda want to hear about him. He looks he
- 23:17Speaker 1: looks big. Now, pictures can lie one way or the
- 23:20Speaker 1: other a lot of times, but he looks like a toad. Yeah. Um,
- 23:24Speaker 1: definitely around here we would say he's a mature buck.
- 23:27Speaker 1: I mean, he was. We got him scored right now,
- 23:30Speaker 1: one sixty seven three quarters. We'll get us opinion on that,
- 23:35Speaker 1: but right now I think he's all over one sixty
- 23:38Speaker 1: eight for sure. Give him what he got, man, give
- 23:44Speaker 1: him and give him all of that's right. And I
- 23:46Speaker 1: really didn't have much history with this dear, I tell you.
- 23:49Speaker 1: And then uh, far as what he was doing, he
- 23:52Speaker 1: was traveling. This dude was a traveling deer. After talking
- 23:55Speaker 1: to neighbors, because I never talked to any of the
- 23:58Speaker 1: neighbors about this dear prior horse. But once it got
- 24:02Speaker 1: on social media and Instagram. Two days after I killed
- 24:05Speaker 1: that dear, I mean, my phone started drinking, and uh
- 24:09Speaker 1: it was neighbors, you know, Collins saying they had pictures
- 24:11Speaker 1: of this deer and one of them that had a
- 24:14Speaker 1: majority of pictures was three miles from us, and he
- 24:17Speaker 1: had them out of the October Um. So that was
- 24:22Speaker 1: pretty interesting to this dear. He wasn't in my life
- 24:24Speaker 1: real long. He Uh he showed up two weeks ago
- 24:30Speaker 1: today and uh it was the first time I've seen
- 24:34Speaker 1: them in two years. And it took about a day
- 24:38Speaker 1: looking at old trail cam photos to find them. But
- 24:43Speaker 1: we had him as a two and after year old deer.
- 24:46Speaker 1: He was real heavy horned, and this a lot of potential,
- 24:50Speaker 1: great potential, So he just cruising for those. He wasn't. Uh,
- 24:56Speaker 1: he came in later behind those. But all Rudd really
- 24:59Speaker 1: does to get kicked off in our area. We're right
- 25:02Speaker 1: in the middle of the black Belt from kind of
- 25:05Speaker 1: south southeast of Sharp, Mississippi. But we're right here in
- 25:10Speaker 1: this black belt and they usually don't take off to
- 25:12Speaker 1: about mid December. Yeah, that's kind of what I was wondering. Yeah,
- 25:17Speaker 1: I mean, usually you got some weird ruts there in
- 25:19Speaker 1: that state, but there's you know, there are a lot
- 25:21Speaker 1: of them are later. So what what what do you think?
- 25:25Speaker 1: Why was he traveling so much? I think just the
- 25:28Speaker 1: test off erone build up and them and uh, I
- 25:31Speaker 1: don't he might have got pressured from the neighbors. They
- 25:34Speaker 1: said they weren't really hunting their more rifle hunters, So
- 25:38Speaker 1: I don't know if they were in a tree stand
- 25:40Speaker 1: with the bow yet or not. But I don't know
- 25:42Speaker 1: if he got pushed to us or he just kind
- 25:45Speaker 1: of remembered from two years ago where we were. And
- 25:48Speaker 1: for the last two years we've been clearing on this farm.
- 25:50Speaker 1: Ground bars with dozers and trackos and whatnot, so making
- 25:54Speaker 1: all kinds of racket, but that didn't seem to bother
- 25:57Speaker 1: And uh he made home in one of these fingers
- 26:00Speaker 1: out in the mottle of field, uh, about twenty yards
- 26:03Speaker 1: wide at the thicket with the ditch running through it.
- 26:04Speaker 1: And that was his bedding area. And uh he showed
- 26:08Speaker 1: up one morning at seven o'clock and credit to my brother,
- 26:12Speaker 1: he was running the silk camera there and he told
- 26:15Speaker 1: me and he said, uh, check your phone, see if
- 26:19Speaker 1: you can handle my tech. And and we haven't had
- 26:23Speaker 1: a deer really worth chasing in the last few years.
- 26:25Speaker 1: And I was like, til us a hundred sixty inch
- 26:29Speaker 1: do you know? It's like, yeah, it's time to get Seriously,
- 26:33Speaker 1: that day, I went to woods and water or place
- 26:36Speaker 1: up the road has everything to do with hunting, and
- 26:38Speaker 1: I had I bought no arrows, uh sent locker suit.
- 26:42Speaker 1: You know, I went all out. I'm crossing all my
- 26:46Speaker 1: tees on this guy, and uh, we're getting regular daylight
- 26:50Speaker 1: pictures of them right before dark, right after daylight every
- 26:54Speaker 1: day for the rest of that week. I didn't have
- 26:56Speaker 1: a lock on or anything in there. So me and
- 26:58Speaker 1: my brother went there Saturday and we hung a lock
- 27:02Speaker 1: on and uh, I don't know if that pushed him
- 27:05Speaker 1: out or what, because I hunted him that evening and
- 27:09Speaker 1: all day the next Sunday, and uh I didn't have
- 27:13Speaker 1: a picture of him ever song and so the next
- 27:18Speaker 1: or the phone and Tuesday, which was last week, uh
- 27:23Speaker 1: I took all work. I went down there and I
- 27:26Speaker 1: got about a thousand yards away from that lock on,
- 27:30Speaker 1: on the opposite end of where he was coming from.
- 27:32Speaker 1: We had a good idea he was probably in that
- 27:34Speaker 1: finger would be in there. So I got on the
- 27:36Speaker 1: other end of that where it goes all the way
- 27:38Speaker 1: down and makes a creek. Well, uh I hug my
- 27:43Speaker 1: cell camera there, and by midnight that night he was
- 27:48Speaker 1: in front of it. Yes, he's back. He didn't go
- 27:52Speaker 1: too far. So I'm back at work and I'm looking
- 27:57Speaker 1: at my phone and I'm seeing all these pictures and
- 28:00Speaker 1: he was off and on from midnight. At four am, Well,
- 28:03Speaker 1: I told my boss we have some duty days coming
- 28:05Speaker 1: and he said, well, if you're going, he's a hunter,
- 28:07Speaker 1: he said, if you're gonna go, he said, you might
- 28:09Speaker 1: want to go to this evening Because I said, I'm out,
- 28:13Speaker 1: and I got my climber out of my attic and
- 28:16Speaker 1: I took off to our farm. And uh, I got
- 28:20Speaker 1: hopped in that creek bottom and I walked about a
- 28:22Speaker 1: hundred and fifty yards down in there until I could
- 28:24Speaker 1: find a tree. There was only about one tree I
- 28:26Speaker 1: could find that was plammable, and it wasn't great tree.
- 28:30Speaker 1: It wasn't perfect. When I have a lot of cover,
- 28:32Speaker 1: Um is this on the way to food? Or what is?
- 28:35Speaker 1: What is he? What is it? So we cleared we
- 28:38Speaker 1: cleared up up a lot of ash trees right here,
- 28:40Speaker 1: so there's a lot of new vegetation coming up half
- 28:43Speaker 1: the ground, just like wild rye and stuff like that.
- 28:47Speaker 1: And it's and also it's just some tender grass, and
- 28:51Speaker 1: I guess that's what it what they like. I had
- 28:54Speaker 1: a pinch point there because we had all the trees
- 28:56Speaker 1: pushed up in windrows and there were five yards long. Well,
- 29:01Speaker 1: I put the camera at the end of one of
- 29:02Speaker 1: them wind rose and right on the edge of the creek.
- 29:06Speaker 1: So to make it around there, he had to come
- 29:08Speaker 1: through that little pinch button. And uh and that's that's
- 29:14Speaker 1: what happened. He happened to do that that night, and uh,
- 29:17Speaker 1: so I went in there and this tree, Like I said,
- 29:20Speaker 1: it was not ideal. I got thirteen foot off the
- 29:23Speaker 1: ground how as I could get and uh, and immediately
- 29:28Speaker 1: I had to do on Garlan come through. And I'm
- 29:31Speaker 1: not feeling a real confident about this spot. But it's
- 29:34Speaker 1: the last place he was. So I see right an
- 29:37Speaker 1: hour before the ark, see three bucks coming in, want
- 29:41Speaker 1: the bigger ones at eight points and like two smaller
- 29:44Speaker 1: cold bucks. They come in, come right in front of me,
- 29:49Speaker 1: and behind them about fifteen minutes behind them, you know,
- 29:54Speaker 1: probably fifty seventy yards behind them. I catch a glimpse
- 29:57Speaker 1: of a big body just splitting a gas in the woods,
- 30:00Speaker 1: and I was like, that's the that's mature, dear. I
- 30:03Speaker 1: didn't see back. I was just like the way he's acting,
- 30:06Speaker 1: walking slow, cautious. I'm thinking it's a another eight point
- 30:12Speaker 1: or whatever that I get pictures of that I've seen
- 30:14Speaker 1: the previous hunt. I said, he always comes in slow,
- 30:17Speaker 1: it's probably him, but it wasn't. It was it was
- 30:20Speaker 1: a big guy. He um. He came all the way
- 30:24Speaker 1: down Whin. I had a good uh north northwest wind
- 30:28Speaker 1: that day, and he got as far south of me
- 30:31Speaker 1: as he could down Win and uh, he came up
- 30:37Speaker 1: and I was listening to this here for thirty minutes,
- 30:39Speaker 1: walking so slow. I'm cautious. He came out, Uh finally
- 30:44Speaker 1: it was just like he walked into a through a doorway,
- 30:47Speaker 1: just boom right there, shifting looking there and uh, anyway,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I already had my bow in an hour four dark.
- 30:55Speaker 1: I'm hunting this year. I grabbed my bow about four
- 30:58Speaker 1: o'clock and hold on. So I already had my feet
- 31:02Speaker 1: fitting everything, and I really have to do much movement
- 31:05Speaker 1: besides to draw back and uh yeah, calling man. Anyway,
- 31:11Speaker 1: he uh, he walked in kind of made an S
- 31:15Speaker 1: shape to me, and he was pushing some of them
- 31:20Speaker 1: mother bucks kind of out of the way and whatnot.
- 31:22Speaker 1: And he got to I had to shoot windows when
- 31:26Speaker 1: he got his head, and the first one he was
- 31:27Speaker 1: about to take he did take two more steps and
- 31:30Speaker 1: I was gonna draw, but one of them other bucks
- 31:33Speaker 1: coughed and uh pretty loud, and it strottled me, startled
- 31:38Speaker 1: the deer, and he bolted about fifty yards away from him,
- 31:42Speaker 1: and I was like, you kidding, man, it it's five
- 31:44Speaker 1: ten here at five ten, it's getting pretty dark. I mean,
- 31:50Speaker 1: so I was like, oh gosh, this this is not
- 31:54Speaker 1: gonna happen. And sure enough he eases back to me,
- 31:58Speaker 1: and before he gets in that window, he stops. And
- 32:02Speaker 1: I was nervous about it being too dark to see
- 32:04Speaker 1: my feet socks, and I really could and his legs stopped.
- 32:08Speaker 1: His front legs stopped in a gap about a foot
- 32:10Speaker 1: light of these two small trees growing next to each other,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and about mid distance, ten yards away from me, ten
- 32:16Speaker 1: yards from him. He was in a chip shot twenty
- 32:18Speaker 1: yards want perfectly brought to up. Well, I just drew back,
- 32:24Speaker 1: I put my bead on the back of the front
- 32:26Speaker 1: leg and just followed it up to hit that dark spot.
- 32:29Speaker 1: I felt like I was on the money right there.
- 32:31Speaker 1: And he's between them two trees. That was just that's awesome.
- 32:36Speaker 1: That's awesome. And when he sat all running, he went
- 32:39Speaker 1: up these two wind rows and uh, which is out
- 32:42Speaker 1: into the open field, and I was like, personally, he's
- 32:44Speaker 1: not even gonna make it to the woods. And sure
- 32:46Speaker 1: enough he went a hundred and twenty yards. Well, congrats, dude,
- 32:51Speaker 1: that's awesome. I mean, so you know, so you said
- 32:55Speaker 1: the mid decembers of the rut Um, I guess you know,
- 32:58Speaker 1: coming up here, we're looking at you'll start seeing that.
- 33:01Speaker 1: I mean, I really don't call it rut until about December.
- 33:03Speaker 1: You'll just say, you know, some bucks start like yesterday
- 33:06Speaker 1: I saw a little buck kind of pushing a dove
- 33:08Speaker 1: around it. Yeah. I don't think any of these those
- 33:10Speaker 1: are coming and hate quite yet you might have something
- 33:12Speaker 1: really so there's there's definitely good times ahead though, you know,
- 33:15Speaker 1: I think I think you know, going going forward this week,
- 33:19Speaker 1: what if you had to focus on, um something to hunt?
- 33:23Speaker 1: Are you hunting um like close to a buck's bed
- 33:26Speaker 1: like like you did? Are you still staying with that
- 33:29Speaker 1: pattern or what are you gonna be if you have
- 33:32Speaker 1: a good ideas there? Yes, hunt your win always personally,
- 33:37Speaker 1: I think about your win because a buck like that
- 33:40Speaker 1: they smell or see you. It's I mean, your chances
- 33:42Speaker 1: go down about future sound I feel like okay? So
- 33:47Speaker 1: last question here, on a scale of one to ten,
- 33:51Speaker 1: if you had to rank buck movement and this next week,
- 33:55Speaker 1: where do you think we're gonna be at? Uh? This
- 33:58Speaker 1: next week I'd say probably a seven day eight just
- 34:02Speaker 1: because it's warming up. We've had some real good cold
- 34:04Speaker 1: days and not too cold because here in Alabama, if
- 34:06Speaker 1: it gets too gold cook too cold, dear, will bed down? Sure,
- 34:10Speaker 1: same here, yeah won't. You won't say much of them,
- 34:13Speaker 1: but it's been that perfect, you know. High fifty five
- 34:16Speaker 1: degree tich, six degree days, sunshine, a light frost every morning,
- 34:22Speaker 1: and that's my ideal. Awesome cool. Well, thank you for
- 34:25Speaker 1: hopping on, Daniel, and I appreciate the report. Man. We'll
- 34:28Speaker 1: be talking to you soon. Absolutely. My good friend Patrick
- 34:44Speaker 1: pay Singer has been hunting all over the country, but
- 34:46Speaker 1: recently he had some real nice success in his home
- 34:49Speaker 1: state of Tennessee. Patrick, what's happening, brother, Not much, not much,
- 34:54Speaker 1: just uh still riding this high that I'm on, uh
- 34:57Speaker 1: kind of not uh still in its belief. Yeah, you know,
- 35:02Speaker 1: uh Patrick, if I had to describe you, I describe
- 35:05Speaker 1: you as a jolly fella just in general. Man, you're
- 35:07Speaker 1: always happy. And then uh, because that's like how we
- 35:10Speaker 1: met you the first time. You're just smiling the whole time.
- 35:13Speaker 1: It's like, that's a nice guy. And then right now,
- 35:16Speaker 1: I'll bet you about as jolly as it gets for Patrick. Man, Well,
- 35:21Speaker 1: thank you, brother. Yeah, my my cheeks has been hurting.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I've been smiling, I'd imagine, man. So you uh, you
- 35:29Speaker 1: were blessed with a really really great buck. They're uh,
- 35:32Speaker 1: kind of close to home, right, Yes, yes, this was
- 35:36Speaker 1: actually right on my home farm. Doesn't get any better
- 35:39Speaker 1: than that. I've over the last twelve years I've I've
- 35:43Speaker 1: managed this property and it's went from nothing over a
- 35:47Speaker 1: hundred inches to where every year I'm getting good quality
- 35:50Speaker 1: bucks and only taking this. This is the only second
- 35:53Speaker 1: buck I've taken in twelve years. Would you call us
- 35:56Speaker 1: East Tennessee. Yes, yes, I'm in uh in the point
- 36:00Speaker 1: right right up against the Appalachian Mountains, not too far
- 36:04Speaker 1: from Gallinberg Pitching Forwards, sixty miles from Asheville, North Carolina.
- 36:08Speaker 1: So is it kind of hilly? Yes, I'm at the
- 36:12Speaker 1: foot foot hills of Appalachian Mountains, about three or four
- 36:15Speaker 1: miles pro fly. Um, this is more of the valley
- 36:19Speaker 1: it is. Um, it's not flat, it's rolling, so we
- 36:23Speaker 1: do have some hills, but I'm not actually in the mountains. Yeah,
- 36:26Speaker 1: and this is this is kind of similar to our
- 36:28Speaker 1: home where most of the I guess you'd call it
- 36:31Speaker 1: agg is actually just hay pasture, right, yes, yes, Um,
- 36:35Speaker 1: for years it was hay pasture, cattle pasture. We're getting
- 36:40Speaker 1: a little bit more crops going on, but um, mostly
- 36:44Speaker 1: not your good deer habitat. So what have you been
- 36:47Speaker 1: focusing on? Uh? As far as hunting deer? If there's
- 36:50Speaker 1: no you know, is there is there a bed to
- 36:53Speaker 1: food source that you're working with or what are you
- 36:55Speaker 1: looking at when you go out and you're trying to
- 36:56Speaker 1: kill a deer this time of year? Well if if
- 37:01Speaker 1: if it's public or somewhere that you can't manage, what
- 37:05Speaker 1: you're wanting to look for is acorns because we've got
- 37:10Speaker 1: a lot of timber is trying to find those acorns
- 37:12Speaker 1: are feeding on. You can find an agg field that's
- 37:15Speaker 1: being cut, focus on that. Um, those are the couple
- 37:20Speaker 1: of things you want to focus on. That's where you're
- 37:21Speaker 1: going to find the dose is either cut agg or
- 37:26Speaker 1: on the acorns. Yeah. And then I'm assuming you guys
- 37:29Speaker 1: do quite a bit of planting food plots and stuff
- 37:31Speaker 1: like that throughout the year on different places and it's
- 37:34Speaker 1: no different there at home, right, Yes? Yes, um, we
- 37:39Speaker 1: we typically I plant mossy oak biologic and I like
- 37:43Speaker 1: the clover, oats and radishes. Never had really good luck
- 37:47Speaker 1: with turnips, but especially clover and oats. It just seems
- 37:52Speaker 1: like it doesn't get cold enough here. If they hit turnips,
- 37:56Speaker 1: it's usually into February March and a lot of them
- 37:59Speaker 1: will wrought. So I usually don't plant that. And you
- 38:03Speaker 1: recently killed what maybe the county record there, and I
- 38:06Speaker 1: would assume he's pretty close to that food plot there.
- 38:10Speaker 1: Huh yes, sir, Um, yeah, I was blessed to kill. Um.
- 38:15Speaker 1: He's gonna gross right at right under one one seventy
- 38:23Speaker 1: eight and two eights And our record previously from night
- 38:28Speaker 1: to two thousand and eight was hundred forty eight inch,
- 38:32Speaker 1: so such a huge jump. Um. Yeah, I've improved the
- 38:37Speaker 1: quality but everything here at my house over the years.
- 38:39Speaker 1: It's took twelve years, but uh timber, I fended some
- 38:43Speaker 1: of the hardwoods down um let one field that's a
- 38:47Speaker 1: couple of acres just grow up basically CRP for betting
- 38:51Speaker 1: and cover. And then next to that I'll plant the
- 38:55Speaker 1: biologic probably just a half acre. They don't spend a
- 38:59Speaker 1: lot of time in there, but it gives them something green,
- 39:01Speaker 1: something to eat. And then next to it, the farmer
- 39:05Speaker 1: will leave about an acre of standing beans for me.
- 39:11Speaker 1: That's where the deer this time of year ends up,
- 39:13Speaker 1: is in the standing beings. So this time of year,
- 39:17Speaker 1: there's a lot of shifting going on, you know, depending
- 39:19Speaker 1: on where you at. You're kind of on the cusp
- 39:20Speaker 1: of the south, in the in the Midwest there, Uh,
- 39:23Speaker 1: you know, the ruts kind of changing. It might be
- 39:25Speaker 1: getting kind of post rut. And then also you have
- 39:27Speaker 1: some different seasons coming in and uh, I know you
- 39:30Speaker 1: you you embrace the gun season that comes around and
- 39:33Speaker 1: make the most of it. Right, Do you change your
- 39:35Speaker 1: tactics some when every gun season comes around. Yes, I don't.
- 39:39Speaker 1: I don't want in there super tight. Um. I want
- 39:42Speaker 1: to give myself a little bit of a buffer, you know.
- 39:46Speaker 1: I like that E D E two a hundred yards back, uh,
- 39:50Speaker 1: to give him room. And and where this deer was,
- 39:53Speaker 1: he was in the CRP, right on the edge of
- 39:56Speaker 1: the hardwoods. There was no way of getting in there.
- 39:59Speaker 1: So the closest I could get was on the creek
- 40:03Speaker 1: with the biologic in front of me and then the
- 40:05Speaker 1: CRP on the other side, setting back overlooking that CRP.
- 40:11Speaker 1: And that was a transition he was walking through. The
- 40:14Speaker 1: c RP would come through the biologic going to the
- 40:18Speaker 1: beans behind me. So if I would have been setting
- 40:21Speaker 1: into beans, I probably wouldn't have shot him because he
- 40:25Speaker 1: didn't get to me until about ten minutes of light
- 40:27Speaker 1: lesson many kind of late movement there. So as we
- 40:31Speaker 1: look forward to kind of like this Thanksgiving holiday weekend
- 40:33Speaker 1: time time period, what do you predict the buck movement
- 40:36Speaker 1: to be like in Tennessee. I think it's gonna be
- 40:39Speaker 1: really good. Um, it's gonna get a little bit warmer.
- 40:43Speaker 1: I wish it was colder. Um. I see that it
- 40:45Speaker 1: looks like maybe up in the fifties for a couple
- 40:48Speaker 1: of highs um. But traditionally, the thing with Tennessee is is,
- 40:54Speaker 1: you know, we've got the three Stars. We've got Eastern, Middle,
- 40:56Speaker 1: and Western. So we're such diverse because we're such a
- 41:00Speaker 1: hm uh east to west state. Typically it seems like
- 41:04Speaker 1: here in East Tennessee, the some of the best rut
- 41:07Speaker 1: is from Thanksgiving through the first week of December, And
- 41:13Speaker 1: a lot of people get caught up here because they
- 41:16Speaker 1: see uhty buck running doze the first week in November
- 41:21Speaker 1: and they're like, oh, they're rutting. Well, I typically don't
- 41:25Speaker 1: see the big boys in from now when I killed
- 41:29Speaker 1: until that first end of the first week of December.
- 41:33Speaker 1: So so I think a lot of people have got
- 41:35Speaker 1: a good opportunity at those big mature bucks, good times
- 41:38Speaker 1: ahead of his man turkey, potato salad and all that
- 41:41Speaker 1: kind of stuff, and then just gets So if you
- 41:45Speaker 1: had to rank one to ten, what would you call
- 41:47Speaker 1: it for the next week, I'd say a good solid eight,
- 41:51Speaker 1: solid eight. Maybe let's go I like it. Yeah, sure,
- 41:58Speaker 1: that's uh yeah, yeah, well cool man. Congrats on the
- 42:02Speaker 1: giant buck, dude, and appreciate the time and the report
- 42:05Speaker 1: and the friendship. Man. Uh just can't thank you enough.
- 42:08Speaker 1: And and it's just cool to see you know, uh,
- 42:11Speaker 1: nice people having having fun and shooting deer and just
- 42:14Speaker 1: getting out in God's creation. Man. So congratulations, thank you brother.
- 42:18Speaker 1: Nothing like seeing the Creator through his creation. It's exactly right, brother,
- 42:24Speaker 1: and and very blessed to call you guys my friend.
- 42:27Speaker 1: Thanks Patrick. Yes, sir, we have got Jimmy Shyy on
- 42:33Speaker 1: the phone now. He is a hunter in Pennsylvania. Jimmy,
- 42:35Speaker 1: what's been happening, dude? It's been off and on lately.
- 42:40Speaker 1: It's what I would say, Yeah thoughts, Uh, you're moving
- 42:43Speaker 1: around and then all of a sudden the quit or
- 42:44Speaker 1: what there's a spotty where I'm where I've been hunting
- 42:48Speaker 1: you you're on them one day and then they're going
- 42:50Speaker 1: the next. Of what I've been seeing, I think it's
- 42:51Speaker 1: because you just take time off and go take pictures
- 42:54Speaker 1: of those gihnt elkoho all the time. I think that's
- 42:55Speaker 1: what what's happening to you? You know that could that
- 42:58Speaker 1: could also be a fard of it too, plain that
- 43:00Speaker 1: in work. Yeah, it always gets in the White Man
- 43:03Speaker 1: dead gum it. Oh yeah, I know. So. Uh it's uh,
- 43:07Speaker 1: you know mid tolight November rotten. Now, Um, what has
- 43:10Speaker 1: been happening in the deer woods up there? The deer
- 43:12Speaker 1: still kind of rutting or they chasing those around or
- 43:14Speaker 1: is it a little different than that. I've been seeing
- 43:17Speaker 1: a lot of routten activity here, especially I work night
- 43:20Speaker 1: shifts and we have a lot of agg fields where
- 43:22Speaker 1: I work, so there's a lot of deer. So I've
- 43:24Speaker 1: been seeing a lot of bucks chasing still, and even
- 43:27Speaker 1: while hunting, I've seen a few like you know, looking
- 43:30Speaker 1: for dose myself and passed up a couple of bucks
- 43:32Speaker 1: here in the last week. Our archery season just ended
- 43:34Speaker 1: the past Friday, so I hunted that last week pretty
- 43:37Speaker 1: hard and passed up a couple of bucks. And I
- 43:39Speaker 1: might kick myself in a butt for later. Yeah, dude,
- 43:42Speaker 1: it's always a tough choice for sure. What's the weather
- 43:45Speaker 1: been like lately? Um, it's been very very cold the
- 43:49Speaker 1: last couple of days. I've got a real big snow
- 43:52Speaker 1: storm to begin the week. There is that very cold
- 43:54Speaker 1: Pennsylvania style or Texas style, I'd say Pennsylvanias. I mean, yes,
- 44:00Speaker 1: your day it was like real feel of like five
- 44:01Speaker 1: degrees that terrible. It's pretty cold. We don't really see
- 44:06Speaker 1: that every year here. So when that happens, does that
- 44:09Speaker 1: change deer movement much? From what I see? For me? Yeah,
- 44:12Speaker 1: I definitely noticed a lot of deer like they don't
- 44:15Speaker 1: seem to move as far. I mean, I still saw
- 44:17Speaker 1: a couple of bucks that were like kind of like
- 44:18Speaker 1: small young box looking for does, But I think a
- 44:21Speaker 1: lot of the mature box kind of definitely hang out
- 44:24Speaker 1: with the does and bed dose don't move a lot
- 44:25Speaker 1: from their bedding areas. So if you're going to hunt
- 44:29Speaker 1: that approaches, does it feel like mornings or evenings are
- 44:32Speaker 1: better when those deer aren't moving very far? I'm I'm
- 44:35Speaker 1: seeing more movement in the mornings is what I've noticed. Definitely,
- 44:39Speaker 1: Like first light for the first couple of hours, you know,
- 44:41Speaker 1: to like nine in the morning or so, and then
- 44:43Speaker 1: it kind of dies off. What kind of movement is
- 44:45Speaker 1: it like cruising bucks movement or just overall deer movement
- 44:48Speaker 1: like to and from food sources or what do you
- 44:50Speaker 1: I just think it's I just think it's more overall
- 44:52Speaker 1: just deer movement from food sources, getting off, moving around,
- 44:55Speaker 1: getting warm a little bit and getting a little bit deat,
- 44:57Speaker 1: and then you know the buck hanging out, and I'm
- 45:00Speaker 1: sure a few bucks are still chasing around even at
- 45:02Speaker 1: that time. You said, well, we go that there's a
- 45:04Speaker 1: lot of egg fields around. What's the primary egg food
- 45:07Speaker 1: source in your area? In my area probably would be
- 45:10Speaker 1: oaks a lot. We have a lot of like red oak,
- 45:12Speaker 1: and our my area where I hunt primarily spotty white oak.
- 45:16Speaker 1: This year wasn't a super good years. A lot of
- 45:19Speaker 1: you know, a lot of areas were kind of dead
- 45:21Speaker 1: because we had a big gypsy moth infestation that's really
- 45:24Speaker 1: killed a lot of the trees. So we saw some
- 45:27Speaker 1: of those a few years ago, like I coat the
- 45:29Speaker 1: bark in their caterpillars and stuff. Right, it's kind of gross. Yeah, yeah,
- 45:32Speaker 1: it's really gross and really bad for acorns. So now
- 45:37Speaker 1: the reds do well, those well, those acorns last like
- 45:41Speaker 1: for several more weeks or you know, a couple of months,
- 45:44Speaker 1: or they pretty much die out as a food source.
- 45:47Speaker 1: They I'm sure spots still last, but I mean, from
- 45:50Speaker 1: what I see, by the time our gun seasons get in,
- 45:53Speaker 1: the pressure really turns up. Because we have really bad
- 45:56Speaker 1: hard pressure here in p A. I mean, the deer
- 45:59Speaker 1: really quick. End of looking at it, A lot of
- 46:01Speaker 1: you know, they kind of go to thick areas to
- 46:02Speaker 1: start just browsing. Yeah, so they're just uh, they'll just
- 46:05Speaker 1: be eating like woody browse out in the woods. Yeah,
- 46:07Speaker 1: just yeah, a little you know, a little bushes and
- 46:09Speaker 1: a lot of I know, like Japanese I forgot exactly
- 46:12Speaker 1: called some kind of Japanese like a little berry bush.
- 46:14Speaker 1: It's invasive here in pre day a lot of places.
- 46:17Speaker 1: I don't know, I don't I don't remember what it's called.
- 46:20Speaker 1: But it's a little dinky bush has a little red berries.
- 46:22Speaker 1: They really love that. Really a lot of spikes on it. Yeah,
- 46:25Speaker 1: not good for us, good for them. So as as
- 46:29Speaker 1: the pressure ramps up there with a gun season, are
- 46:32Speaker 1: you shifting your focus kind of more of those deep holes.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Maybe that's exactly my game plan. My game plan is
- 46:39Speaker 1: to get where other guys either can't or won't go. Yeah,
- 46:42Speaker 1: I mean getting that fixed stuff. And you know you
- 46:44Speaker 1: might not be able to see, you know, with a
- 46:46Speaker 1: with the rifle. You know, you can't see that two
- 46:48Speaker 1: yards or whatever, and you don't see fifty. But that's
- 46:50Speaker 1: where that you're going to be, and that's what they
- 46:52Speaker 1: gotta that's what they're gonna be, is where you should be. Yeah, yeah,
- 46:55Speaker 1: for sure. Man. Cool. So as we kind of look
- 46:57Speaker 1: towards this, uh you know, looking forward to it, maybe
- 47:01Speaker 1: the start of what people would call late season, right,
- 47:04Speaker 1: so kind of end of lockdown, post rut top stuff. Um,
- 47:09Speaker 1: what do you expect the Bucks to be doing? Mostly? Um,
- 47:12Speaker 1: I think here in p A, I think you're gonna
- 47:14Speaker 1: see a little surge once the first week a Rightful
- 47:17Speaker 1: ends here, next week right Fight opens this coming Saturday,
- 47:21Speaker 1: and after the first initial burst of people, you know
- 47:23Speaker 1: in the woods, I think you'll see a little burst
- 47:25Speaker 1: of rut coming right back. And I think you'll see
- 47:28Speaker 1: some box cruising around looking for the last few days,
- 47:31Speaker 1: you know, and looking for the end of the end
- 47:33Speaker 1: of the rut type phase is I think you'll see
- 47:35Speaker 1: a little more movement. Is the Japanese barberry? Is that
- 47:38Speaker 1: what it is? That would be it? So that's what
- 47:41Speaker 1: people need the key in on going going Flarida. It's
- 47:45Speaker 1: an invasive landscaping now can now considered are actually banned
- 47:50Speaker 1: in Pennsylvania. But yeah, we had a lot of cool minds.
- 47:53Speaker 1: That's what they use. They use the cheap stuff like that,
- 47:55Speaker 1: the black locusts and the barberry, and they plant that
- 47:58Speaker 1: edge just spreads like crazy. All right, well it's illegal,
- 48:01Speaker 1: but don't tell the plans of the deer. Okay. If
- 48:05Speaker 1: if you had to rank what you predict the deer
- 48:07Speaker 1: movement to be, like specifically the buck movement over the
- 48:10Speaker 1: next week, on a scale of one to team, what
- 48:11Speaker 1: would you think it would be? I'd say natural movement
- 48:15Speaker 1: a five and pressure movement probably in eight. Really you
- 48:19Speaker 1: like the pressure. So, I mean we have a lot
- 48:21Speaker 1: of pressure in public lands here, a lot of people
- 48:24Speaker 1: and I mean you know, there's not a lot of
- 48:25Speaker 1: places that aren't other than the real fixed stuff. A
- 48:29Speaker 1: lot of places aren't gonna be peopleless. I should say, wow,
- 48:32Speaker 1: that's cool, man. I haven't ever thought about the pressure
- 48:34Speaker 1: like making hunting that much better. So that's exciting. Man,
- 48:37Speaker 1: It's a good time to be a hunting sounds like that,
- 48:40Speaker 1: sounds like I'm hoping to be anyway. Well, dude, I
- 48:43Speaker 1: hope you find a real big one this upcoming weekend. Man,
- 48:46Speaker 1: thanks for the report. Ye, thank you. Sounds like an
- 48:52Speaker 1: exciting time to be in the deer woods. I know
- 48:54Speaker 1: a lot of you're in despair because the ruts over.
- 48:57Speaker 1: But guess what it's not, alright, dear, season is isn't over.
- 48:59Speaker 1: The deer have to exist somewhere in that place is
- 49:02Speaker 1: out in the wild country, so you need to get
- 49:04Speaker 1: there as quick as you can. A couple of things
- 49:06Speaker 1: to maybe help you, inspire you, or get you excited
- 49:08Speaker 1: or just past the time. The Element has a new
