Transcript
- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Monday, it's the 18th of
- 0:14November. So glad, so glad friends, that
- 0:17you have tapped on player to invite me into your day so that
- 0:21we can read another chapter of the Bible today and start this
- 0:25week, this week, which I've got to be honest, friends, it's felt
- 0:28like it's been a long time coming for me.
- 0:31So I'll look. A long time ago I suggested I
- 0:34was going to be going away for a few weeks of training with the
- 0:37Army and well, I have to do a whole bunch of pre recordings so
- 0:42that these podcasts could still come out each day.
- 0:45But here I am back on the other side of it.
- 0:47And thank you to those of you who reached out to check in on
- 0:50me and make sure that I survived and I did.
- 0:53Broken rib. But here I am.
- 0:55And it has been the most humbling and profound life
- 0:59experience to go through the experience for one month of
- 1:03being just like any other new Army recruit.
- 1:06Not a chaplain, not anything special, but just someone who
- 1:10has to learn the basics of soldiering from scratch.
- 1:12And that involves, yes, a whole lot of yelling and a whole lot
- 1:16of weapons training, combat training, communications
- 1:19training, radio training, leadership training, so much, so
- 1:24much, and has given me a profound appreciation for what
- 1:28it means to wear the green and serve your country.
- 1:30So it has been an incredible, incredible month for me.
- 1:33And I am deeply, deeply exhausted, but so glad to be
- 1:37back with my family in a life where I have a say in what time
- 1:41I get up and eat and go to the toilet and do all the normal
- 1:44things that we just need to take for granted.
- 1:47But friends, one of the things that I really missed was getting
- 1:50to sit down and read the Bible each day with you.
- 1:54So I'm delighted to be back, settling back into this
- 1:58incredible story of the book of Acts, this story that we will
- 2:02stay in all the way up to the week of Christmas when we'll
- 2:05finish. Today's a pretty special kind of
- 2:08day because today is the day we meet this dude named Saul who
- 2:11will become quite the large character as we continue working
- 2:16our way through the New Testament.
- 2:19So let us hear how God calls this persecutor of His church to
- 2:23become His church's greatest advocate as we read together
- 2:28Acts Chapter 9. Meanwhile, Saul was uttering
- 2:42threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord's
- 2:45followers, so he went to the high priest.
- 2:48He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus,
- 2:52asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of
- 2:55the way he found there. He wanted to bring them, both
- 2:59men and women, back to Jerusalem in chains.
- 3:03As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from
- 3:07heaven suddenly shone down around him.
- 3:10He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, Saul,
- 3:15Saul, why are you persecuting me?
- 3:19Who are you, Lord? Saul asked, and the voice
- 3:22replied, I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.
- 3:27Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you
- 3:31must do. The men with Saul stood
- 3:34speechless, for they heard the sound of someone's voice, but
- 3:38saw no one. Saul picked himself up off the
- 3:41ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind, So his
- 3:46companions led him by the hand to Damascus.
- 3:48He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or
- 3:52drink. Now there was a believer in
- 3:55Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a
- 3:59vision, calling Ananias. Yes, Lord, he replied.
- 4:04The Lord said, Go over to Straight St to the House of
- 4:09Judas. When you get there, ask for a
- 4:12man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to me right now.
- 4:17I've shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and
- 4:21laying hands on him so he can see again.
- 4:25But Lord, exclaimed Ananias. I've heard many people talk
- 4:29about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in
- 4:32Jerusalem, and he is authorised by the leading priests to arrest
- 4:36everyone who calls upon your name.
- 4:39But the Lord said, Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take
- 4:46my message to the Gentiles and to the kings as well as to the
- 4:50people of Israel, and I will show him how much he must suffer
- 4:54for my name's sake. So Ananias went and found Saul.
- 5:00He laid his hands on him and said, Brother Saul, the Lord
- 5:04Jesus who appeared to you on the road has sent me, so that you
- 5:08might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 5:12Instantly something like scales fell from Saul's eyes and he
- 5:17regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptised.
- 5:22Afterward he ate some food and regained his strength.
- 5:26Saul stayed with the believers in Damascus for a few days, and
- 5:30immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogue,
- 5:33saying He is indeed the Son of God.
- 5:37All who heard him were amazed. Isn't this the same man who
- 5:41caused such devastation among Jesus followers in Jerusalem,
- 5:45they asked. And didn't he come here to
- 5:47arrest them and take them in chains to the leading priests?
- 5:52Saul's preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in
- 5:56Damascus couldn't refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the
- 6:00Messiah. After a while, some of the Jews
- 6:03plotted together to kill him. They were watching for him day
- 6:07and night at the city gate so they could murder him.
- 6:10But Saul was told about their plot.
- 6:12So during the night some of the other believers lowered him in a
- 6:16large basket through an opening in the city wall.
- 6:20When Saul arrived in Jerusalem, he tried to meet with the
- 6:23believers, but they were all afraid of him.
- 6:26They did not believe he had truly become a believer.
- 6:29Then Barnabas brought him to the apostles and told them how Saul
- 6:33had seen the Lord on the way to Damascus and how the Lord had
- 6:37spoken to Saul. He also told them that Saul had
- 6:40preached boldly in the name of Jesus in Damascus.
- 6:44So Saul stayed with the apostles and went all around Jerusalem
- 6:48with them, preaching boldly in the name of the Lord.
- 6:51He debated with some Greek speaking Jews, but they tried to
- 6:54murder him. When the believers heard about
- 6:57this, they took him down to say Saria and sent him away to
- 7:00Tarsus, his hometown. The church then had peace
- 7:05throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria, and it became stronger
- 7:09as the believers lived in the fear of the Lord and with the
- 7:13encouragement of the Holy Spirit.
- 7:14It also grew in numbers. Meanwhile, Peter travelled from
- 7:19place to place, and he came down to visit the believers in the
- 7:23town of Lyda. There he met a man named Ioneus
- 7:27who had been paralysed and bedridden for eight years.
- 7:30Peter said to him, Ioneus, Jesus Christ heals you, get up and
- 7:36roll up your sleeping mat. And he was healed instantly.
- 7:40Then the whole population of Lyda and Sharon saw Ioneus
- 7:45walking around and they turned to the Lord.
- 7:48There was a believer in Joppa named Tabatha, which in Greek is
- 7:52Dorcas. She was always doing kind things
- 7:56for others and helping the poor. About this time she became ill
- 8:00and died. Her body was washed for burial
- 8:03and laid in an upstairs room. But the believers had heard that
- 8:07Peter was nearby at Lighter, so they sent two men to beg him
- 8:10please come as soon as possible. So Peter returned with them and
- 8:15as soon as he arrived, they took him to the upstairs room.
- 8:19The room was filled with widows who were weeping and showing him
- 8:22the coats and other clothes Dorcas had made for them.
- 8:26But Peter asked them all to leave the room.
- 8:28Then he knelt and prayed. Turning to the body, he said,
- 8:33Get up Tabatha. And she opened her eyes.
- 8:38When she saw Peter, she sat up. He gave her his hand and helped
- 8:42her up. Then he called in the widows and
- 8:45all the believers, and he presented her to them alive.
- 8:50The news spread through the whole town and many believed in
- 8:53the Lord and Peter stayed a long time in Joppa living with Simon,
- 8:58a Tanner of Hides. Oh Jesus, what a revolutionary
- 9:12message you have for us, that we are loved and that we are
- 9:17forgiven and that we are members of your family through what you
- 9:22have done for us. Not because of anything that we
- 9:26do. Not because of how smart or
- 9:28hardworking or dedicated or enlightened we are, but simply
- 9:32because of the faith that you plant in our hearts.
- 9:36Faith that you have indeed saved us, that you are the Messiah,
- 9:41the Son of the living God. Thank you for this good news.
- 9:46Thank you that today, some 2000 years later, we can still share
- 9:50this good news and that the revolutionary grace that you
- 9:55offer can still transform lives. Our Lord, embolden us in your
- 10:00mission and thank you for your love.
- 10:04We pray all of this in your life changing name, Jesus, Amen.
