- 0:00If you got a question, just raise your
- 0:01hand. I'll call on you.
- 0:03>> Yeah, it's time. It's time for us to to
- 0:05go out and play another team. Um, you
- 0:07know, our preparation has been great. I
- 0:09think from the standpoint where I stand
- 0:12as a head coach, just this team has been
- 0:14as enduring and enjoyable to me as any I
- 0:17can remember just since we started in
- 0:19August. They've given us our our coaches
- 0:22a fair shake. I've never enjoyed being
- 0:24on the field more with the team. Um, off
- 0:26the field is another matter that the
- 0:28whole world is talking about right now,
- 0:30but I've never enjoyed being on the
- 0:31field. Um, and I'm ready to see where
- 0:34we're at. I think we have more different
- 0:37ways to go with this team than we've had
- 0:38in the past. So,
- 0:42it's usually a little more buttoned up
- 0:43going into the season. We we have a lot
- 0:45of we have more questions to answer, but
- 0:48I'm excited to start that journey and
- 0:50start playing somebody else to see where
- 0:52we're at. Um, our non-conference
- 0:55schedule is making us jump right into
- 0:57this thing. There's early travel.
- 1:00There's really good teams. Uh, there's
- 1:02all these things that are that are
- 1:04happening. There's 13 or 14 position
- 1:06players that we think deserve a shot to
- 1:08run out there and see if they can
- 1:10contribute and how they add to the
- 1:12synergy. You know, what makes the best
- 1:15lineup, what makes the best defense, uh,
- 1:18what makes the best pitching staff. We
- 1:21named three starters, pitchers who we
- 1:23absolutely believe in. We waved a flag
- 1:26and the winner, the three winners of
- 1:29that get a chance to be starters for us
- 1:31the first weekend. Um, but I'm also
- 1:35excited about the three guys that'll
- 1:37come in right behind the starters for
- 1:38this first weekend because they have the
- 1:41potential to to go compete and I feel
- 1:44like if we would name three other
- 1:46starters, we could it feels like we
- 1:48could we could be just as competitive.
- 1:50So, what does that mean? Is it is our is
- 1:53our higher end not there or is our
- 1:55higher end in a bunch of numbers? Um, I
- 1:59don't know. But, um, you know, I'm
- 2:02excited to to get this thing started
- 2:04with these guys. I'm excited for
- 2:07Mariano. I'm excited for um, uh, you
- 2:11know, Sanders, who's been in the program
- 2:13and got 15 appearances last year. To see
- 2:16him take the next step and see how he's
- 2:18just continued to throw more and more
- 2:20strikes, has been great. I'm excited for
- 2:23our captain to to be right around 70%
- 2:26strikes and a guy that's had trouble
- 2:27with injury each year. um to be put
- 2:30together and ready to go for this year.
- 2:32Um but I'm just as excited about Drew
- 2:35Whan. I'm just as excited about Andreas
- 2:38Alvarez. I'm just as excited about
- 2:40Christian Chatterton. You know, two of
- 2:42those three have been with us and we've
- 2:43invested in them. Andreas Alvarez
- 2:45started a super regional in hopes of
- 2:47winning a game and helping us start
- 2:50working toward either, you know,
- 2:51extending our season or helping us to
- 2:53get to Omaha. So, we believe in those
- 2:56guys. You know, Chatterton's finished a
- 2:57game to help us win a series. you know,
- 2:59at Tennessee and in our league and all
- 3:02that stuff. So, um I'm I'm excited about
- 3:06a lot of different things, but um it's
- 3:09time to get out there and put the
- 3:10uniform on against another opponent.
- 3:13>> Ryan, what you mentioned 13 or 14 guys
- 3:15in the lineup possibly. Will you make a
- 3:18an effort to get all all those guys in
- 3:20there at some point, whether it's
- 3:21starting or or checking in or how what's
- 3:24sort of your plan for the weekend?
- 3:25>> Yeah, a lot of different ways. My
- 3:27biggest plan for the weekend is figuring
- 3:29out what Sunday looks like with Friday
- 3:31and Saturday being beautiful and Sunday
- 3:34isolated, you know, or we're expecting
- 3:36thunderstorms, uh, isolated tornado
- 3:40gust and things of that nature. So, or
- 3:42would we wind up having to play a double
- 3:44header on Saturday that would really
- 3:47force you? I Chase Freigh looks not
- 3:49catching two games if we were forced
- 3:51into a double header for sure. Um, so
- 3:54you know, you got Steel and Gregorio
- 3:56that's been competing for that spot and
- 3:59those two guys have been playing some
- 4:00left field, too. So, I can see both of
- 4:02those guys getting in there this
- 4:04weekend. But, you know, one of them
- 4:05might catch if we wind up playing a a
- 4:08double header. Um, Ethan Bingaman's
- 4:10undeniable. The freshman's our hottest
- 4:12bat right now going into the season.
- 4:15He's kept coming. You you have some
- 4:17anchor pieces like Freighic and Rembert,
- 4:21Bub Terrell, Gravara.
- 4:24Gravara gonna play shorter third. You
- 4:27know, he's probably going to play both.
- 4:29We probably got to look at different
- 4:30combinations. We got to go from like
- 4:32what we've seen in practice, shift to a
- 4:34game, what the coaches think and get to
- 4:37the concept of the players making the
- 4:39lineup out. And the only way I know how
- 4:41to do that is get them out there. even
- 4:43if we get clipped or there's a setback,
- 4:45every day we're trying to go out and
- 4:47give the best we got. You know, we owe
- 4:49it to whoever's on our schedule,
- 4:51whatever game it is, to play with a
- 4:52consistent standard and consistent
- 4:54effort. And whenever you don't do that,
- 4:56that's a failure in in in something,
- 4:59mental toughness or preparation or being
- 5:02together
- 5:04or distractions, whatever that may be.
- 5:06But um for me coming to work for these
- 5:09guys getting out there playing a game uh
- 5:11their job is to give a consistent best
- 5:15standard and best effort every time we
- 5:17take the field. So um I think I'm a
- 5:20little more concerned about pride if you
- 5:24want me to keep trying to answer the
- 5:25question. Um, you know, I think it's one
- 5:28of the seven deadly sins and I worry
- 5:30about pride of a player like me me and
- 5:34I'm I'm gonna be looking closely when
- 5:35there's the lineup's going to be so
- 5:37different for these first few games and
- 5:39can change more often and guys coming in
- 5:42and out of lineups that I think things
- 5:45can change enough. I'm not looking who's
- 5:47in the game always as a head coach. I'm
- 5:50looking to see who maybe is not in the
- 5:52game and are they still with the team?
- 5:55Do they still have a good look in their
- 5:56eye? Are they still holding to a
- 5:58standard and effort that what we ask for
- 6:01whether they're in or out of the lineup?
- 6:04Same thing I think you can tell about
- 6:05the the pitching staff. We're like, you
- 6:08go three starters, you might could go
- 6:09three other starters that are just as
- 6:11good. I want those other three guys that
- 6:12are not. I think they're just as good. I
- 6:15don't I don't see how the fifth, sixth,
- 6:18seventh inning is not as important or
- 6:20more important than the first few
- 6:22innings of a ball game. I want a
- 6:24pitching staff that gets to the point
- 6:26where the championship teams I've been a
- 6:28part of, the whoever's on the mound is
- 6:31your number one pitcher. That's how we
- 6:32should play behind him. That's how we
- 6:34should act. That whoever's out there in
- 6:36whatever situation, whoever's currently
- 6:38pitching for us is our number one
- 6:40pitcher. So maybe a maybe a dream on my
- 6:44part, but those are things we're still
- 6:46trying to sell.
- 6:47a removal of pride and let us go out and
- 6:49play for a month and get locked in for
- 6:52those 10 SEC weekends and let's see who
- 6:55can help us. Let's see if we can find a
- 6:56combination that we haven't even thought
- 6:58about that might wind up being the best
- 7:01way for us to go.
- 7:03>> Well, you sort of answered part of that
- 7:06question that I was going to ask. just
- 7:07talk about uh putting together a lineup
- 7:09because uh you've got you've got the
- 7:12potential to really have threats pop up
- 7:15and down the lineup no matter where they
- 7:17are.
- 7:17>> Yep. And I think we can run a six or
- 7:19seven man left-handed lineup. We got two
- 7:21switch hitters. When you go Lucas Steel,
- 7:24Ryan Farber who's really come on um the
- 7:26last couple of weeks we're getting
- 7:28excited that they can Farber and Gravara
- 7:32can can hold that down. Can Gravara and
- 7:34Belaloo play a whole season? We never
- 7:37want to make excuses in our program and
- 7:38I don't think we did but um you know
- 7:41having Gavar and blew out that last week
- 7:44and we played so good in that regional
- 7:46them two boys not being able to post for
- 7:48that and then um I think Fabian had a
- 7:51broke finger and we just we said can you
- 7:54play and he really couldn't have an at
- 7:56bat but he played because the other two
- 7:58were out we had to have him. Um, I think
- 8:02I'm excited about Gavar and Paloo. Like,
- 8:04I'm praying for their for their health
- 8:06for this year because I want everybody
- 8:08to see what I know that they can do if
- 8:09they get to play a complete season. I do
- 8:12think it would help our our ball club.
- 8:15But, um, yeah, we're we're excited to to
- 8:19kind of see all these different things.
- 8:21Gabe gave me six sheets of paper and a
- 8:24lineup on each and who was left out each
- 8:27time. Because every time you make a
- 8:28lineup, you're like, "But these two are
- 8:30out." I don't I've been presented
- 8:32lineups before, but I haven't had
- 8:34asterisks at the bottom. It says, "But
- 8:36these two are out." Um, that that means
- 8:39something to me. like they should be in
- 8:41there, but in this setup versus this
- 8:43type pitcher and if you want to see this
- 8:46guy short, if you want to see this guy
- 8:48at first, well, these two guys are out.
- 8:51So, that speaks to me loud and clear.
- 8:54And I do think it has a chance to be
- 8:56positive if I can keep my team together.
- 8:58This is a new challenge for us because I
- 9:01think we've been in ball games in the
- 9:03sixth, seventh inning or later and we've
- 9:06gone like looked at who's coming up.
- 9:09This might be a good chance to pinch hit
- 9:11but looking at that left and right
- 9:14handed hitters that are available. You
- 9:16didn't feel like you're really making a
- 9:18step. And a lot of these times we've
- 9:19been punting and staying with what we
- 9:21got. Now I think we can absolutely we
- 9:24need a lefty here. Oh, here's a lefty.
- 9:26Oh, here's two or three real options.
- 9:28Here's two or three real right options.
- 9:30You got a freshman like Ty Thompson, the
- 9:32fastest guy on the team. All right, so
- 9:34we can pinch hit this guy. He can get on
- 9:36base. Ty Thompson can go run. And then
- 9:38we still have somebody could go out and
- 9:39play defense the next half if we wanted
- 9:42to to do that. I'm excited, but the
- 9:44coach is going to have to do a better
- 9:46job. We're going to have to if we're
- 9:47going to have the opportunity to have
- 9:49more moves, we're going to have to make
- 9:51more moves and look at more moves and
- 9:54and and figure out like how we can
- 9:57really run to to put ourselves in the
- 10:00best chance, especially late in a ball
- 10:01game if you're trying to chase somebody
- 10:03or or um you know, I think the one area
- 10:08that's been a concern for me has been
- 10:11you overall defense and you when you're
- 10:15top 10 in the country at doing something
- 10:17that's hard to just give up. And I I I
- 10:21know it feels like that the college
- 10:23game's getting more offensive.
- 10:26I know it is. We go through these trends
- 10:28and it keeps building out. It's back
- 10:30offensive, but we have to be able to
- 10:32defend the field. What's the balance of
- 10:35that, you know, from offense defensive
- 10:37standpoint? So, we got to keep figuring
- 10:40that out and make sure we can get our
- 10:41best team on the field late. But, we
- 10:43might take a look at some risk. I think
- 10:46some teams have went a long way in our
- 10:49league the last few years of being able
- 10:54to put a couple of bats in the lineup
- 10:56and still being able to defend the field
- 10:59adequate enough to to be the last team
- 11:02standing.
- 11:04I'm I'm I'm hunting for that. I'm
- 11:06hunting for the next steps for us to do.
- 11:11And everybody's been happy. Everybody's
- 11:12been aiming as high as they possibly
- 11:14can. There's, you know, 100 teams
- 11:16thinking they're going to Omaha, as they
- 11:18should. But all that's over now. Now
- 11:20that the hype's over, now we're down to
- 11:22playing games. But I have to be honest
- 11:25with you because your your question's
- 11:27deep to me because I've been asking
- 11:29myself the same thing. What am I willing
- 11:31to do and take a look at? What risk are
- 11:34we willing to take not to do the same
- 11:35thing over and over to see if we can
- 11:38find a little more squeeze out of this
- 11:41roster that could go a lot of different
- 11:43ways to to do some things that some some
- 11:47really good teams in our league have
- 11:49been able to do a little bit more than
- 11:51us the last few years?
- 11:54>> Kind of a loaded question, but uh what
- 11:55are some things about those three
- 11:56pitchers that gave you the confidence to
- 11:59start them this weekend? And then can
- 12:00you talk about the uh development from
- 12:02Sanders?
- 12:03>> Yeah. Uh they threw the most strikes.
- 12:06That was the biggest thing. And that
- 12:07wasn't everything, but that was one of
- 12:08the big flags we waved. Griffin Graves
- 12:11would have been in there with the lap
- 12:12pull, so he's out this weekend, but
- 12:14Griffin would have definitely been in
- 12:16there. It may have been three left. He's
- 12:18throwing this weekend, you know, but uh
- 12:21the three guys that got the start, that
- 12:23was kind of the the chase we set before
- 12:25them, and those guys absolutely did it.
- 12:28And I mean, come on now. Two or three
- 12:31years ago, Jackson Sanders was the
- 12:33number one uh prospect in his class. So,
- 12:37let's He was going to He was He was
- 12:39coming. Had a bright future. Um the
- 12:42industry knew it. Um threw out of the
- 12:44pin some. He might throw out of the pin
- 12:46this year. you know, he's getting a
- 12:48chance to start this weekend, but you
- 12:50know, somebody's got to fill the shoes
- 12:51of uh, you know, like Myers last year
- 12:55who probably had the best year of any
- 12:57pitcher on our staff. He saved so many
- 12:59games and come in and and bridge the gap
- 13:01and came in behind starters and cleaned
- 13:04up stuff or just gave us great length
- 13:08and and helped us steady the thing or
- 13:10build a lead and keep going. So Carson
- 13:13Myers, that role needs to be done, but
- 13:15you know, it's a sinker sinker ball out
- 13:17of Jackson and got more used to that
- 13:20right-handed, but a left-handed sinker.
- 13:22The offspe stuff feels like it's getting
- 13:24a little bit better, but I think he's
- 13:27probably ingame. uh talking about our
- 13:30squad games compared to ingame last
- 13:32year. I think he's moved from that 55%
- 13:35to that 65 66% and being able to
- 13:39leverage account more consistently is
- 13:41everything for somebody that was the
- 13:43number one pitcher in the country, you
- 13:45know, as a left-hander when he was
- 13:47coming out of high school. The
- 13:49experience that he got from last year,
- 13:50we didn't use him as much at the end of
- 13:52the year, but it was just we didn't
- 13:54leverage counts as well. and and so it's
- 13:57amazing what that 10 to 12% strike
- 14:00percentage has done for him of the
- 14:02misses are not as big. So like if you're
- 14:05if you're shooting at targets and then
- 14:07you pull it up that the grouping is is
- 14:09smaller and better and he's getting more
- 14:12swing and miss instead of the big
- 14:14misses. So just maturity and he has his
- 14:17stuff set really good right now that u I
- 14:20think the team's excited for. Um, I do
- 14:23think we have to whenever you say sinker
- 14:25baller, you better have an infield,
- 14:27especially your left side ready to
- 14:28defend. So, our board's going to have to
- 14:31make plays. They're going to have to
- 14:32defend balls. If Gavvar is at third or
- 14:35Todd Clay's at third, they're going to
- 14:37have to get swinging bunts, balls that
- 14:40are chopped. They're going to have to
- 14:41attack, take proper angles, and they're
- 14:44going to have to be able to throw off of
- 14:45one foot. Sometimes these in between,
- 14:47especially early in the season, the
- 14:49sinker ball sinker ball guys require you
- 14:52to absolutely defend especially the
- 14:54ground ball um much much more. So I
- 14:57anticipate that. But you know with those
- 15:00ground ball sinker ball guys, if it's
- 15:01going to gloves it's really good. If
- 15:03it's going through it's a challenge. But
- 15:05you know he also has I would I would
- 15:07imagine he's leading us in double plays.
- 15:09The power of being able to throw one
- 15:10pitch and get two outs via like a double
- 15:12play. Those are some things that sinker
- 15:15ball guys, man, when they get on a roll
- 15:16and can make one pitch and get two outs,
- 15:18they can get going. So, I just we all
- 15:21have trust and confidence that he's
- 15:23starting to look like everything that we
- 15:25thought he was going to be. And I sure
- 15:27hope he can reproduce what we've seen
- 15:29the last few weeks for for everybody to
- 15:32see on Saturday.
