- Lucas: Hello again, and welcome back to Learn Swahili with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I'm here with the wonderful Luna. Luna: And I'm Luna. Wow, we just talked about the weather last time, and now it's time to learn something totally different. What's on today's menu, Lucas? Lucas: Today, we're diving into body parts, but not just the basics. We're going to focus on two specific ones: nywele and ngozi. You know, hair and skin. Luna: Oh, that's useful. I mean, we all have hair and skin, right? Unless you're a robot, but I don't think our listeners are robots. At least I hope not. Lucas: Right. And if you've been learning with us for a while, you already know some words. We've covered kichwa, mikono, macho... but nywele and ngozi are new. And they're perfect for describing yourself or someone else. Luna: So, can you teach us? I'm ready to learn something new. Lucas: Absolutely. First, let's start with nywele. That means hair. Say it with me: nywele. Luna: Nywele. Nywele. That's fun to say. Lucas: And ngozi, which means skin. Ngozi. Luna: Ngozi. Ngozi. Okay, so nywele and ngozi. Got it. Lucas: Now, let's make it a bit more personal. To say 'my hair', we say nywele zangu. And 'my skin' is ngozi yangu. Luna: So, nywele zangu, ngozi yangu. But wait, why are they different? Nywele zangu, ngozi yangu. One has z-, one has y-. Lucas: Great question. In Swahili, nouns have classes, and the possessive agrees. Nywele is in a class that uses z-, and ngozi uses y-. It's a pattern you'll get used to. For now, just memorize them as phrases. Luna: Okay, I'll try. Nywele zangu, ngozi yangu. My hair, my skin. Lucas: Perfect. Now let's put them into sentences. To say 'My hair is long', we say Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Luna: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. So I'd say that if I had long hair. But my hair is short. How would I say that? Lucas: You'd say Nywele zangu ni fupi. But let's stick with what we have. Repeat after me: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Luna: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Nywele zangu ni ndefu. That's a mouthful, but I think I got it. Lucas: And for skin, we can say Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. That means 'my skin is black'. Of course, you can change the color, but this is a good start. Luna: Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. Okay, I'm saying it, but is that something people actually say? Lucas: It is. You might describe someone by their skin color, though it's important to be respectful. But for learning, it's fine. Let's practice both sentences together. Luna: Together? So, Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. That's a lot, but I'll try. Lucas: You're doing great. Now, let's do a quick review. Can you say 'my hair'? Luna: Nywele zangu. Lucas: And 'my skin'? Luna: Ngozi yangu. Lucas: Perfect. Now, before we go deeper, I want to say something. If this podcast has been helping you learn Swahili, and you want to keep it ad-free, you can support us by buying me a coffee at buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. It really helps us keep making these episodes. Luna: Yeah, and it's just a small way to say thanks if you enjoy learning with us. But no pressure. We're happy to have you here regardless. Lucas: Totally. Now, back to nywele and ngozi. Let's try a little role-play. Imagine you're at a hairdresser, and you want to say 'my hair is long'. What would you say? Luna: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Lucas: Exactly. And if someone asks about your skin, you can say...? Luna: Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. Lucas: Great. Now, let's mix it up a bit. What if you want to say 'his hair' or 'her hair'? That's nywele zake. And 'his skin' is ngozi yake. But we'll save that for another episode. For now, let's just practice what we have. Luna: Okay, so nywele, ngozi, nywele zangu, ngozi yangu, Nywele zangu ni ndefu, Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. I think I've got it. Lucas: You're a natural. Let's do one more repetition, just to make it stick. Repeat after me: nywele. Luna: Nywele. Lucas: Ngozi. Luna: Ngozi. Lucas: Nywele zangu. Luna: Nywele zangu. Lucas: Ngozi yangu. Luna: Ngozi yangu. Lucas: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Luna: Nywele zangu ni ndefu. Lucas: Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. Luna: Ngozi yangu ni nyeusi. Lucas: And there you have it. Today, we learned nywele and ngozi, plus how to say 'my hair' and 'my skin', and two sentences to describe them. Luna: It was fun. I feel like I can now describe myself a little bit in Swahili. Thanks, Lucas. Lucas: Anytime. Remember, if you want to support us, check out buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. And keep practicing these phrases. See you next time! Luna: Asante sana, and goodbye!
