- 0:06Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson and Lancelynn. And if you
- 0:14Speaker 1: like Cardinal Territory, do us a favor, reach out, hit
- 0:17Speaker 1: that subscribe button. And here's the thing, Kyle pointed out.
- 0:20Speaker 1: If you're already subscribed, tell a friend, tell two friends,
- 0:24Speaker 1: because we're trying to grow this thing, because we're trying
- 0:27Speaker 1: to get to seven thousand subscribers. All right, gentlemen, Cardinals
- 0:31Speaker 1: are out of the blocks at two and one Sunday's game.
- 0:36Speaker 1: They fought back. We've seen that, at least from this
- 0:39Speaker 1: ball club in the first two They came back to win. Yesterday,
- 0:43Speaker 1: had a lead and gave it away and gave it
- 0:45Speaker 1: back whatever. But they keep punching back. Kyle does that
- 0:48Speaker 1: it's early in the season. But does that tell you
- 0:50Speaker 1: something about the ball club or too early to tell?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think it tells you about, excuse me,
- 0:56Speaker 2: their mindset right now, tells you about how they're feeling
- 0:58Speaker 2: right now in the locker room and how their culture
- 1:01Speaker 2: has started off. You know, I think there's times on
- 1:04Speaker 2: just about every team you feel like you're never out
- 1:07Speaker 2: of a game. For one week and then you feel
- 1:11Speaker 2: like you can't win unless you score seven, or you
- 1:14Speaker 2: can't win unless you give up zero. You know, you
- 1:16Speaker 2: know there there's there's certain ups and downs that go about,
- 1:19Speaker 2: you know, go on through a season. But certainly right now,
- 1:22Speaker 2: this Cardinals offense is confident and they're not worried about
- 1:26Speaker 2: being down. They're not worried about a league giving up,
- 1:28Speaker 2: and they fight right back. And as a pitching staff,
- 1:31Speaker 2: it's a good feeling because I'm sure the bullpen, which
- 1:33Speaker 2: I think we're going to touch on, you know, they're
- 1:34Speaker 2: not throwing as well as they'd like. But man, when
- 1:38Speaker 2: when your offense is firing like that really makes up
- 1:41Speaker 2: for some for some discrepancies on the mound. But there's
- 1:44Speaker 2: gonna be times where the offense goes cold for five
- 1:46Speaker 2: or six days, and if the bullpen can or a
- 1:48Speaker 2: bullpen and the starters can pick it up, then you
- 1:50Speaker 2: can win three or four of those games where you
- 1:52Speaker 2: don't score more than you know, twelve runs in those
- 1:55Speaker 2: five games.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Lance, if this is who the Cardinals are and they
- 2:00Speaker 1: they will get runs, I mean, does that change the
- 2:02Speaker 1: approach for a starting pitcher.
- 2:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it gives you the feel that you don't have
- 2:05Speaker 3: to be perfect, right, So every time you go out
- 2:08Speaker 3: you have your job. It's hey, I'm trying to give
- 2:10Speaker 3: up the least amount of runs as possible. And if
- 2:12Speaker 3: you feel like you go out there and throw up
- 2:14Speaker 3: zeros every time, mistakes seem to happen a little bit more,
- 2:18Speaker 3: every pitch has a little more emphasis and means a
- 2:23Speaker 3: lot more. But when you're free, knowing, hey, if I
- 2:25Speaker 3: give up one, it's gonna be all right. I'll give
- 2:27Speaker 3: up a couple. They're going to bail me out next thing,
- 2:29Speaker 3: you know, you can make some pitches. You don't have
- 2:31Speaker 3: to be perfect. Like I said, pitch counts stay low,
- 2:34Speaker 3: and then you can get deeper into games, and then hopefully,
- 2:37Speaker 3: you know, starters can start doing that as a season
- 2:40Speaker 3: goes on, and then the bullpen can find their stride
- 2:42Speaker 3: by putting people in you know, less of the in
- 2:46Speaker 3: the game later and finding their roles where they can
- 2:49Speaker 3: tend to sit and not have to do too much
- 2:51Speaker 3: and cover too many ants.
- 2:53Speaker 1: One of the guys that's hitting right now is three
- 2:56Speaker 1: games into is a big league career, JJ weatherholding. He's
- 3:00Speaker 1: already piling up a bunch of first first game first
- 3:04Speaker 1: hit was a homer. Then they had his first walk
- 3:06Speaker 1: off Kyle to me, and there's that description II uses
- 3:11Speaker 1: a lot. He is a slow heartbeat, but this is
- 3:14Speaker 1: a young guy who doesn't seem to be overcome by
- 3:17Speaker 1: the big moments.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Well, really cool when you hear talking about his walk
- 3:22Speaker 2: up moment and right before that of Bat and he's like,
- 3:25Speaker 2: you know, I really wasn't thinking about much other than
- 3:26Speaker 2: singing my walkout song.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You know.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I think it's just fans probably think there's certain of
- 3:32Speaker 2: those things that we lie about or that really don't matter,
- 3:35Speaker 2: But there's something about that that can relax. You know.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Certain people pick a walk up song to pump you up,
- 3:41Speaker 2: certain people pick a walk up song to pump the
- 3:43Speaker 2: crowd up maybe, and JJ obviously wants a song that
- 3:46Speaker 2: he can sit there and jam to a little bit,
- 3:48Speaker 2: you know, get a little bit of rhythm and maybe
- 3:50Speaker 2: find a little happy place. So I just think those
- 3:54Speaker 2: are the cool things that when players are able to
- 3:56Speaker 2: share it at the right time and talk about it,
- 3:58Speaker 2: it adds a little bit to this situation. But yeah,
- 4:01Speaker 2: it sure seems like for right now that Harpy is
- 4:04Speaker 2: slow and he's able to slow the game down. Now
- 4:07Speaker 2: at some point he's gonna go through a hard time here,
- 4:09Speaker 2: so let's excuse me. And sometimes he's gonna go through
- 4:13Speaker 2: a hard part here and face some adversity and hopefully
- 4:16Speaker 2: he can figure out here in the first few weeks
- 4:18Speaker 2: who he is as a big league player and then
- 4:20Speaker 2: you know, fall back on that when when the slump
- 4:22Speaker 2: or the hard time comes.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Let's you see a young guy like that who who
- 4:29Speaker 1: so far, so good, but he looks like it's not
- 4:32Speaker 1: this third major league game, looks like he's been there.
- 4:34Speaker 1: He's on a young team, so maybe there's not a
- 4:36Speaker 1: ton of pressure, but being the number one prospect comes
- 4:40Speaker 1: with pressure. How was he handled it so far? In
- 4:42Speaker 1: your eyes? What impresses you?
- 4:44Speaker 4: No?
- 4:45Speaker 3: I mean, he's done a good job, right, But we
- 4:47Speaker 3: have to remember it is three games, so it's gonna
- 4:49Speaker 3: be there's gonna be a lot of ups and downs.
- 4:52Speaker 3: He knows what he's trying to do, he knows what
- 4:54Speaker 3: he's about, So that's a good thing, right. I don't
- 4:56Speaker 3: think he's gonna have to Uh, we're gonna have the
- 4:58Speaker 3: ups and downs of searching who he is is and
- 5:00Speaker 3: what he's trying to accomplish, you know, not only on
- 5:04Speaker 3: the field, but in the dugout and in the clubhouse,
- 5:07Speaker 3: he seems to have that head on his shoulder, So
- 5:10Speaker 3: I think that's why you're seeing him kind of jump
- 5:12Speaker 3: in and go. Now, as a year goes on, it's
- 5:15Speaker 3: going to be, hey, they have the book on you,
- 5:17Speaker 3: you have to learn the book on them, and then
- 5:18Speaker 3: what the counters are going to be as you get
- 5:21Speaker 3: going here. But he seems to, uh, you know, right
- 5:24Speaker 3: out of the gate, have a plan. So that's good.
- 5:27Speaker 3: It doesn't seem to be too Hey, I'm just kind
- 5:30Speaker 3: of going up there and and doing whatever. He's got
- 5:34Speaker 3: an idea what he's trying to do offensively and defensively,
- 5:38Speaker 3: seems to have some energy. He seems to know the
- 5:42Speaker 3: right thing to do. So those are all positives. But
- 5:46Speaker 3: like we said, there's three games in so there's gonna
- 5:48Speaker 3: be some negatives and then, you know, how can we
- 5:51Speaker 3: understand those negatives when they happen, learn from them, and
- 5:54Speaker 3: then be better for him as a year goes on,
- 5:56Speaker 3: because you know, the talent alone and the head on
- 5:59Speaker 3: his shoulders has got a chance to be really good.
- 6:00Speaker 3: And then now it's how he's gonna do with deal
- 6:02Speaker 3: with failure and be better for it once he once
- 6:05Speaker 3: they see what is you know, maybe his things that
- 6:07Speaker 3: are are not not ready yet, or you know what
- 6:11Speaker 3: his weak spots are. All Right, how's he gonna how's
- 6:13Speaker 3: he gonna hide those? And how's he gonna, you know,
- 6:15Speaker 3: not not go down a rabbit hole when they start
- 6:18Speaker 3: when they start exploiting them. So it's gonna be an
- 6:20Speaker 3: interesting season, But it is like that for every rookie.
- 6:24Speaker 1: It'll it'll be interesting to see how big league pitchers
- 6:27Speaker 1: adjust to him and try to find out maybe where
- 6:29Speaker 1: the weak spots are. But I feel like there should
- 6:32Speaker 1: be a giant asterisk on the on the screen because
- 6:35Speaker 1: we are just three games in. But the show is
- 6:37Speaker 1: talking about what's going on, and one of the things
- 6:39Speaker 1: going on, Kyle is Jordan Walker is off to a
- 6:44Speaker 1: really good start. Three hit Sunday, got his first home run,
- 6:47Speaker 1: just one strikeout over those first three games. Are we
- 6:50Speaker 1: seeing a different version of Jordan Walker at this point
- 6:54Speaker 1: three games in?
- 6:56Speaker 2: Well, I mean, I think there's a couple of guys
- 6:58Speaker 2: who you got to be excited about. How the looking
- 7:00Speaker 2: at the plate, you know, to start, and in general,
- 7:03Speaker 2: I feel like April's a little bit slower offensive month.
- 7:06Speaker 2: You know we've talked about on the past previous shows
- 7:08Speaker 2: on that. So to see Walker Gorman as well cutting
- 7:12Speaker 2: down on the strike ups through his first ten play appearances,
- 7:14Speaker 2: Victor Scott really doing well. But yeah, man, I think
- 7:19Speaker 2: Walker making contact and catching the ball at the right
- 7:23Speaker 2: contact point I think is interesting or am exciting, you know,
- 7:28Speaker 2: interesting to see some of the swing changes he's made
- 7:30Speaker 2: and how they're possibly playing into that as well. I
- 7:34Speaker 2: think we all have heard about the hard work that
- 7:36Speaker 2: he's put into this swing and some of the adjustments,
- 7:38Speaker 2: and you just gotta love and you I feel for
- 7:42Speaker 2: a player because this is what I went through in
- 7:43Speaker 2: twenty seventeen when I made major changes. I got off
- 7:46Speaker 2: to the worst start of my career in ten starts
- 7:48Speaker 2: and got sent down. I really get excited when a
- 7:51Speaker 2: guy puts in the hard work, sees some improvement, and
- 7:55Speaker 2: see some results right away, so that you get that
- 7:57Speaker 2: confidence like, Okay, whatever I did, this is where I
- 8:00Speaker 2: can be and this is this is the new me.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So as players were always changing, we're always getting better,
- 8:06Speaker 2: and it really looks like a couple of the guys
- 8:08Speaker 2: that went into the offseason trying to make adjustments feel
- 8:11Speaker 2: really good about him right now.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Now, The question is how does Jordan Walker, whatever's working
- 8:16Speaker 1: now hold on to it. When he went down last
- 8:18Speaker 1: year to double A came up, then he seemed to
- 8:21Speaker 1: have found it, then he kind of regressed. Isn't that
- 8:23Speaker 1: one of the skills that these guys have to learn
- 8:26Speaker 1: is how to, as you guys say, maintain when things
- 8:29Speaker 1: aren't going your way, follow the process. Is that a
- 8:32Speaker 1: difficult thing, lance.
- 8:35Speaker 3: Yeah, especially if if it starts not working and you
- 8:38Speaker 3: and you aren't totally bought into it, right. I think
- 8:41Speaker 3: last year at times it was working and then it wasn't,
- 8:44Speaker 3: so he would fall back to some old habits. So
- 8:47Speaker 3: hopefully these new things that he did in the offseason,
- 8:50Speaker 3: kind of the trial airon spring training has him ready
- 8:53Speaker 3: to go to understand what he's got to do daily,
- 8:56Speaker 3: week in and week out in the big leagues to
- 8:58Speaker 3: be able to you know, have it happened for one
- 9:01Speaker 3: hundred and sixty two games. So hopefully the last year's
- 9:05Speaker 3: back and forth kind of going in between and this
- 9:08Speaker 3: year you can kind of have a true plan, true
- 9:10Speaker 3: daily you know, routine, true you know cage work and
- 9:14Speaker 3: all that, because a lot of that stuff goes a
- 9:15Speaker 3: long way and then when you go through your little downtimes,
- 9:18Speaker 3: it's not oh, well it's not working because it's new
- 9:21Speaker 3: or this and that. It's like, no, this is my process,
- 9:23Speaker 3: here's how I'm going to get through it. I think
- 9:26Speaker 3: a lot of times these young hitters, when they start
- 9:28Speaker 3: like having failure, they don't realize that they're not swinging
- 9:31Speaker 3: at balls in their zone and there in the in
- 9:34Speaker 3: the counts that they want to be in. There they
- 9:36Speaker 3: are getting outside of the strike zone. There's a lot
- 9:38Speaker 3: of different things that go into it, and they go
- 9:40Speaker 3: straight to, oh, my swing's not right. It's like, no,
- 9:42Speaker 3: you're chasing, you're not getting in good counts, You're you know,
- 9:46Speaker 3: you're in between because you're you're thinking too much. So
- 9:49Speaker 3: simplify the process. Know your daily routine, get it ready,
- 9:52Speaker 3: and then know what the pitcher is trying to do
- 9:54Speaker 3: to you, and then make the adjustments as you go.
- 9:57Speaker 3: But this whole thing, with this whole lineup is a
- 9:59Speaker 3: lot of these guys know what they're trying to do.
- 10:01Speaker 3: The question is are they going to be able to
- 10:03Speaker 3: keep doing what they're trying to do when when pictures
- 10:05Speaker 3: make adjustments to what they're trying to do and then
- 10:08Speaker 3: not coming out of things and not giving into what
- 10:10Speaker 3: the picture's doing. So that's gonna be the back and
- 10:12Speaker 3: forth as this season goes on, because these guys are talented,
- 10:15Speaker 3: But hey, how am I going to know my zone
- 10:18Speaker 3: what I'm trying to do and not let the picture
- 10:20Speaker 3: get me out of my thing just because I feel
- 10:23Speaker 3: like I have to go get it. It's like, no,
- 10:25Speaker 3: be patient, let it come to you and and do
- 10:27Speaker 3: your things you need to do. And I think by
- 10:29Speaker 3: not trying to hit home runs will help them not
- 10:32Speaker 3: come out of their their zones. Just hit the have
- 10:34Speaker 3: hard contact, try to hit doubles and the home runs
- 10:36Speaker 3: will come, and don't strike out. I think that will
- 10:38Speaker 3: help them as a year goes on.
- 10:40Speaker 1: Kyle is here, right if I ask a follow up
- 10:42Speaker 1: to Lance and it has nothing to do with what.
- 10:44Speaker 2: He yeah, I mean, don't let it happen too often,
- 10:48Speaker 2: because I mean, if you don't need me on the show,
- 10:50Speaker 2: I won't show up. But no, I mean just that's fine.
- 10:53Speaker 1: Back and forth that having to so Lance, I've been getting.
- 10:56Speaker 2: I'll just take a drink of coffee. I'll I'll just
- 10:58Speaker 2: take a drink coffee.
- 10:59Speaker 4: I'll be here.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I got some tweets about the beard. Folks want to know,
- 11:05Speaker 1: and I think I saw it on the on the
- 11:07Speaker 1: feed for our for on YouTube. Are you gonna let
- 11:10Speaker 1: the grow the beard grow out fully? They some folks
- 11:14Speaker 1: would like to see that, or at some point are
- 11:16Speaker 1: you gonna trend it? What's going on with the beard?
- 11:18Speaker 1: I mean, how full do you need it to grow out?
- 11:21Speaker 1: In all lot of.
- 11:24Speaker 3: That's pretty much it. If I go in, I mean
- 11:26Speaker 3: you're gonna go down here. No, I don't like the
- 11:29Speaker 3: beard like laying on your chest when you're when you're
- 11:32Speaker 3: sleeping at night. So this is about as about as
- 11:34Speaker 3: long as it's you get. I'm probably gonna take it
- 11:36Speaker 3: up on the side this weekend. Maybe I'm gonna go
- 11:38Speaker 3: to my summer mullet. Maybe Kenny Powers. So I'm gonna
- 11:41Speaker 3: look majestic as a motherfucker on a jet ski this summer.
- 11:45Speaker 1: Ah, there it is.
- 11:46Speaker 2: Are we gonna fade this up? Is it gonna be?
- 11:48Speaker 2: We're gonna We're gonna fade it for my hero.
- 11:51Speaker 3: Get the bullet going. We're gonna get the mullet going. Oh,
- 11:55Speaker 3: just Kenny Power. So I'm not even just American flag
- 11:57Speaker 3: it just holding it across the right across.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I would I would love to see I would
- 12:03Speaker 2: love to see the beard on the guy on the
- 12:05Speaker 2: YouTube chat who wanted to know if you were going
- 12:07Speaker 2: to let it get full. I would love to see
- 12:10Speaker 2: the beard on that guy, right. I love the follow
- 12:13Speaker 2: up question. What's the follow up question on my facial hair?
- 12:15Speaker 3: Have you had any?
- 12:17Speaker 1: No? But I do have a follow up to what
- 12:18Speaker 1: you were saying. And since we're off track, I might
- 12:21Speaker 1: as well just run the bus right off the road.
- 12:24Speaker 1: You mentioned your first big league start and getting hit around.
- 12:28Speaker 1: My kid made his varsity debut this week and got
- 12:33Speaker 1: the snot what do I tell him?
- 12:37Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to I don't want to correct
- 12:41Speaker 2: you here, but you're talking about my first opening day
- 12:44Speaker 2: start I got from my first big league start, I
- 12:47Speaker 2: got to win against Cans, Royals and and through really well.
- 12:51Speaker 2: But that's that's fine. Just well, I just want to clarify.
- 12:55Speaker 2: What do you what do you say to him? Well,
- 12:58Speaker 2: I would ask you this question when you played sports
- 13:04Speaker 2: or when you did something as how old is he sixteen?
- 13:07Speaker 1: Seventeen, sixteen?
- 13:09Speaker 2: All right, what would you want your coach or your
- 13:13Speaker 2: dad to tell you at the age of sixteen? After
- 13:16Speaker 2: you had a bad one. That's what I would ask
- 13:18Speaker 2: you and think about that and go to him with
- 13:21Speaker 2: that comment. But he's going to have another start. Hopefully,
- 13:25Speaker 2: he's going to get a play again here. And that's
- 13:27Speaker 2: what I would hammer home. It's like, hey, you got
- 13:30Speaker 2: a twenty five thirty game season here, and you're going
- 13:33Speaker 2: to get six or seven more starts, so be ready
- 13:36Speaker 2: for the next one. And Mama said, there's gonna be
- 13:39Speaker 2: days like this. I think that's the old one.
- 13:41Speaker 1: He came out of the pen and he got knocked around.
- 13:43Speaker 1: My dad used to tell me work hard. That was
- 13:46Speaker 1: his answer for everything. Hey, Dad, I think man, work hard.
- 13:51Speaker 1: Let's talk. Let's talk. Let's talk cardinal pitching lance. We've
- 13:57Speaker 1: seen three starts, right, let's be very good. McGreevy really good,
- 14:02Speaker 1: no hit ball for six innings, then may not so good.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Probably not the kind of start to his cardinal career
- 14:10Speaker 1: that he wanted. How tricky is the first start of
- 14:13Speaker 1: the season for starters?
- 14:17Speaker 3: You know, everybody's a little different, right, Some guys are
- 14:19Speaker 3: are locked in a little bit different. Some guys it
- 14:22Speaker 3: takes them with some flow. So here's what I've got
- 14:25Speaker 3: on the way. The first three starts when I think
- 14:28Speaker 3: you're looking at Libby new his catcher and comfortable with McGreevy,
- 14:32Speaker 3: new his catcher's comfort with May's gonna get a rhythm
- 14:35Speaker 3: with catcher the catcher, and then they're gonna start figuring
- 14:38Speaker 3: out what he likes to do. That's like a in
- 14:40Speaker 3: spring training, you don't game plan like you do in
- 14:44Speaker 3: the regular season. McGreevy and Libby have been in the organization,
- 14:48Speaker 3: they have all that, and I think May's first start
- 14:50Speaker 3: was like a, hey, now we can figure out our
- 14:53Speaker 3: way to work together, our flow for game planning, catching,
- 14:58Speaker 3: pitch calling, all of the thing. And that comes with
- 15:01Speaker 3: the process. When you're first with an organization, everyone's gonna say, oh, well,
- 15:04Speaker 3: that's what spring training's for. But in spring training, you
- 15:07Speaker 3: you know, I think a couple of times in spring
- 15:09Speaker 3: training I didn't throw to the my starting catcher until
- 15:13Speaker 3: like the last start of spring training. So you're when
- 15:15Speaker 3: you have multiple catchers in spring training, multiple things like that,
- 15:18Speaker 3: you don't always get the work you need to, especially
- 15:22Speaker 3: in game planning and like feel and pitch calling. So
- 15:25Speaker 3: I think what we saw is two starters that knew
- 15:28Speaker 3: the program and knew the catchers well and knew Dusty well.
- 15:30Speaker 3: And then a start where maybe not on this a game,
- 15:33Speaker 3: maybe we're you know, we're we're learning the process of
- 15:36Speaker 3: what our game planning and our game preparation and our
- 15:40Speaker 3: game pitch calling is going to be and that comes
- 15:42Speaker 3: with the territory.
- 15:44Speaker 1: What about for you, Kyle, Like, were you unsure exactly
- 15:48Speaker 1: how it was going to go? Or you pretty locked
- 15:50Speaker 1: in for that first start because of all the things
- 15:52Speaker 1: Lance mentioned.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I was just trying to find it. But I'm pretty
- 15:55Speaker 2: sure my first two starts or three starts with the Cardinals,
- 15:58Speaker 2: I give them like ten percent of my season runs
- 16:00Speaker 2: in the first six innings. I mean, just every now
- 16:03Speaker 2: and then, you just have a couple of bad games,
- 16:05Speaker 2: you know. I think the Marlins put up six or
- 16:08Speaker 2: seven in the first three innings. I don't remember who
- 16:11Speaker 2: the first start was against, but I'm the Padres maybe,
- 16:14Speaker 2: But yeah, every now and then you just have a
- 16:17Speaker 2: couple of rough ones early. And I think Lanspick's a
- 16:20Speaker 2: good point. You know, game planning in the season is
- 16:22Speaker 2: a whole lot different than game planning in spring. And
- 16:25Speaker 2: I look to Destin may to be fine, but also
- 16:29Speaker 2: just as good as Libby and McGreevy were we can't
- 16:33Speaker 2: also expect every start to go the same way. If
- 16:36Speaker 2: they did, the Cardinals are gonna win the division. It's
- 16:38Speaker 2: gonna be great, you know. And Sunday games, This is
- 16:42Speaker 2: not an excuse for anybody. Sunday games, third game of
- 16:46Speaker 2: a series. You've already won the first two. The other
- 16:49Speaker 2: team is scrapping, trying to make sure they have a
- 16:52Speaker 2: happy flight. You got a really good lineup over there.
- 16:55Speaker 2: That is a scrappy lineup. They got shut down the
- 16:57Speaker 2: first couple of days early in the season. Early in
- 17:01Speaker 2: the series I'm guessing Cash and those guys were saying, hey,
- 17:04Speaker 2: let's get on the board early, and let's get after
- 17:06Speaker 2: May here and say kind of set the tone for
- 17:08Speaker 2: the game, so nobody wants to get swept the first
- 17:11Speaker 2: series of the year and just kind of one of
- 17:14Speaker 2: those weird Sunday getaway games.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Probably Klea he set to make his first start since
- 17:20Speaker 1: he was a minor leaguer. We'll talk about that after
- 17:23Speaker 1: the break. You're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 18:15Speaker 1: All right, gentlemen, Kyle Lahey, I've been on the lazy
- 18:19Speaker 1: train since last season, just because he was really nasty
- 18:23Speaker 1: out of the bullpen. He has six pitches predominantly fastball,
- 18:27Speaker 1: suited to start, but he hadn't started since I think
- 18:30Speaker 1: twenty twenty three when he was with Memphis. He wanted
- 18:34Speaker 1: to start. He's going to get his opportunity. Kyle, what
- 18:38Speaker 1: do you think about Leahy?
- 18:42Speaker 2: I think his stuff is nasty. Just like you said,
- 18:45Speaker 2: I think he sets up well to be a starter
- 18:48Speaker 2: for his team and really looking forward to seeing how
- 18:51Speaker 2: he runs with this opportunity. You know, there's a time
- 18:54Speaker 2: in everybody's career. I feel like as a pitcher, the
- 18:58Speaker 2: ones that have been bounced to the bullpenning back bolt
- 19:00Speaker 2: bullpen backs starting is you just want to have one,
- 19:03Speaker 2: and you want to pick one and go with it
- 19:05Speaker 2: and say this is what I'm gonna be. I'm gonna
- 19:06Speaker 2: sink or swim just like this. So I'm glad he's
- 19:10Speaker 2: getting the opportunity. He really earned it after last year
- 19:12Speaker 2: and another good series for the Cardinals here. I mean,
- 19:16Speaker 2: I know it's early, three games, but you know these
- 19:20Speaker 2: early games really can kind of set the tone for
- 19:22Speaker 2: the rest of the year, kind of give the team
- 19:24Speaker 2: some confidence and see how they can succeed against good teams.
- 19:27Speaker 2: And you know, here we are the Mets coming in town,
- 19:29Speaker 2: and this is a big three games here. If we
- 19:31Speaker 2: can see him win the first couple of series of
- 19:33Speaker 2: the year, and I think it's a really big confidence builder.
- 19:37Speaker 1: What about Leahy To me, he's old school because he's like,
- 19:40Speaker 1: any time they want me to have the ball, I'm
- 19:43Speaker 1: taking it like he's not, oh I'm tired, or you know,
- 19:46Speaker 1: I pitched two in a row. You know him a
- 19:48Speaker 1: little bit lance, is he? I mean he seems to
- 19:51Speaker 1: be that old school type pitcher to me. Yeah.
- 19:55Speaker 3: No, when we were with him, you know, he was
- 19:57Speaker 3: trying to make sure that he was a major leaguer,
- 20:00Speaker 3: put in the time and the work. I think in
- 20:01Speaker 3: the off season before he got taken off the roster,
- 20:03Speaker 3: no one picked him up. So you're seeing a guy
- 20:06Speaker 3: that you know takes failure well because he turns it
- 20:10Speaker 3: into hey, what he's turning himself into now right? And
- 20:13Speaker 3: then he's seeing what he's able to do out of
- 20:15Speaker 3: the bullpen multiple innings with his arsenal now being able
- 20:18Speaker 3: to take that to the rotation, it's going to be
- 20:22Speaker 3: I think it's gonna be fun for him. I think
- 20:23Speaker 3: there's going to be some interesting moves that he's going
- 20:27Speaker 3: to have to make with you pitch usage, how he's
- 20:30Speaker 3: going to you know, show certain things and not show
- 20:32Speaker 3: certain things. Because as a reliever you can come in
- 20:35Speaker 3: and just kind of do everything. As a starter, he's
- 20:37Speaker 3: going to have to pick and choose, you know, different
- 20:40Speaker 3: pitches to protect and use on different sides of the
- 20:44Speaker 3: play throughout the game. But he's got the ability to
- 20:46Speaker 3: do all that and he's not afraid. Right the old
- 20:48Speaker 3: school mentality is Hey, I'll take the ball if you
- 20:51Speaker 3: give it to me, because I don't want to go down.
- 20:53Speaker 3: That was his mindset. Now it's hey, give me the ball.
- 20:56Speaker 3: I don't want to go back to the bullpen. So
- 20:57Speaker 3: I think he's going to keep that same mindset as Hey,
- 21:00Speaker 3: I'm gonna go get as many hitters out as I
- 21:02Speaker 3: can for as long as they're going to let me,
- 21:04Speaker 3: and I'm gonna try to do everything I can because
- 21:06Speaker 3: this is what I want to do and I know
- 21:07Speaker 3: I'm capable of doing it. So I think that's the
- 21:09Speaker 3: main thing with him. He knows what he's about, he
- 21:11Speaker 3: knows what he can do, he knows that he's a
- 21:13Speaker 3: big leaguer, and then now he just wants the opportunity,
- 21:16Speaker 3: keeps showing people, and I think he's got all the
- 21:18Speaker 3: tools to do it, and I'm looking for him how
- 21:21Speaker 3: he I'm looking to see how he incorporates all of
- 21:23Speaker 3: his pitches and to each side of the plate, different
- 21:26Speaker 3: hitters with their with their weaknesses, his strength. So that's
- 21:30Speaker 3: going to be the cat and mouse that he gets
- 21:32Speaker 3: to do now, and it's gonna be fun because he's
- 21:34Speaker 3: very smart too and everything he does, so I'm excited
- 21:36Speaker 3: to see what he's got.
- 21:38Speaker 1: And I mean it's a huge adjustment for anyone that's
- 21:41Speaker 1: had even success out of the bullpen. And he knows that.
- 21:44Speaker 1: He talked about having to build up his endurance during spring.
- 21:47Speaker 1: But also you guys know this because you are two
- 21:50Speaker 1: old school pitchers. Is knowing that you can't show all
- 21:54Speaker 1: your stuff early and also saving something for the for
- 21:58Speaker 1: the middle innings. That's like night and day when you're
- 22:00Speaker 1: in a leverage situation in the bullpen, isn't it.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Well, I mean, what a beauty, What a beauty to
- 22:06Speaker 2: have five pitches that you can do that with. You know,
- 22:09Speaker 2: it's a I think that's the one thing that you know,
- 22:12Speaker 2: made Lance so much fun to watch pitches. You know,
- 22:14Speaker 2: he wouldn't throw a slider or curveball until the third
- 22:18Speaker 2: or fourth inning, but he used three different fastballs and
- 22:21Speaker 2: and the hitter just wasn't sure which way I was
- 22:23Speaker 2: gonna go, And then all of a sudden, now he's
- 22:25Speaker 2: got his off speedback. You know. I think that's something
- 22:28Speaker 2: that Pedro Ravon is gonna be really low. Aposo who's
- 22:31Speaker 2: ever back there? But I mean I haven't seen a lineup,
- 22:34Speaker 2: but I would look for Pedro to really kind of
- 22:36Speaker 2: help him get through the first and the second time
- 22:39Speaker 2: through the order, using you know, three of the five
- 22:42Speaker 2: of the six pitches unless he gets into trouble, and
- 22:45Speaker 2: then figuring when to incorporate h you know, those last
- 22:48Speaker 2: couple in assuming he can get you know, through that
- 22:50Speaker 2: second time and still throwing the ball well and get
- 22:52Speaker 2: a chance at the third time. So it's something that
- 22:55Speaker 2: you learn and and I'm sure those guys will be
- 22:57Speaker 2: prepared to do it.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Also. The stress the bullpen so far, Lance hasn't been great.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Some new faces in there, but it's early and if
- 23:06Speaker 1: you look at Roycroft, what's happened to him? I mean
- 23:10Speaker 1: he was danked and dunked all over the place, a
- 23:13Speaker 1: lot of soft contact. But that can happen early in
- 23:16Speaker 1: the season, right, especially when you have younger pitchers or
- 23:19Speaker 1: guys new to an organization. So far, the bullpen hasn't
- 23:23Speaker 1: been good.
- 23:24Speaker 3: Lance, No, bullpen hasn't been good, but they've not been
- 23:27Speaker 3: put in the situations that they hopefully will be put
- 23:30Speaker 3: into as the year goes on and you're getting a
- 23:31Speaker 3: rhythm early in the season, you know there's gonna be
- 23:35Speaker 3: times where well, here's the truth of the matter. A
- 23:37Speaker 3: lot of those guys it's their first opening day, first
- 23:40Speaker 3: opening series of their career. They've been either called up
- 23:43Speaker 3: in the middle of the year or or not have
- 23:45Speaker 3: been on an open day roster. So there's some jitters there.
- 23:48Speaker 3: You gotta find your rhythm as the year goes on,
- 23:50Speaker 3: kind of where you spot in if you're gonna be
- 23:53Speaker 3: the guy that gets us out of the sixth seventh
- 23:54Speaker 3: inning fireman, or you gonna be a leverage guy. There's
- 23:57Speaker 3: a lot of different things that are are kind of
- 23:59Speaker 3: crazy the first, you know, week or two of the season,
- 24:02Speaker 3: and then once you find roles, the starters start going,
- 24:05Speaker 3: you know, ninety five to one hundred pitches where you
- 24:07Speaker 3: know they're gonna get through hopefully the sixth and.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Then everything kind of calms down.
- 24:12Speaker 3: But in the beginning of the season, that's usually what
- 24:14Speaker 3: you see. I mean, you're seeing it all over the
- 24:16Speaker 3: place with guys giving up runs and stuff like that.
- 24:19Speaker 1: Is the bullpen.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Early one gets abused because it gets out there early
- 24:23Speaker 3: and gets put in situations it might not be put
- 24:25Speaker 3: in as a year goes on. So the bullpen, I mean,
- 24:29Speaker 3: I've seen it a lot of times where a guy
- 24:31Speaker 3: has a twenty and to start the year and then
- 24:33Speaker 3: ends the year with a sub three and everyone's like, oh,
- 24:35Speaker 3: what happened. It's like, you just find a rhythm spring training.
- 24:39Speaker 3: You know when you're gonna pitch, you know what inning
- 24:41Speaker 3: and this and that, and then it speeds up a
- 24:43Speaker 3: little bit on you right when the scene starts. So
- 24:44Speaker 3: now they need to need to say, hey, first series over,
- 24:47Speaker 3: take a deep breath. Everything's new here we go.
- 24:51Speaker 1: All right, We've covered the Cardinals, We've covered Lance's beer,
- 24:55Speaker 1: Kyle has given me some parental advice on how to
- 24:59Speaker 1: handle my son and his blow up in his varsity debut.
- 25:03Speaker 1: We've covered it all, gentlemen. Good job. That's going to
- 25:06Speaker 1: do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory. We'll see
- 25:09Speaker 1: you for the next episode. Hopefully that one won't suck.
