- 0:00Psalm 6 from the book of Psalms. Dear Lord, please open our eyes
- 0:06to what you want us to learn from reading these or what you
- 0:09want us to experience and know about the relationship with you.
- 0:13We ask this in Jesus name Amen. So this Psalm it says from for
- 0:19the director of music with stringed instruments according
- 0:22to Shemaneth, a Psalm of David and it this Shemaneth shaman
- 0:31myth, it says it's probably a musical term.
- 0:34So that's what the headline underneath Psalm 6 says.
- 0:40So here's what David says. Lord, do not rebuke me in your
- 0:44anger or discipline me in your wrath.
- 0:48Have mercy on me, Lord, for I am faint.
- 0:53Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony, my soul is in deep
- 1:00anguish. How long, Lord?
- 1:02How long? Turn, Lord, and deliver me.
- 1:05Save me because of your unfailing love among the dead.
- 1:10No one proclaims your name who praises you from the grave.
- 1:15I am worn out from my groaning. All night long I flood my bed
- 1:21with weeping and drench my couch with tears.
- 1:26My eyes grow weak with sorrow. They fail because of all my foes
- 1:32away from me, all you who do evil.
- 1:35For the Lord has heard my weeping.
- 1:38The Lord has heard my cry. The Lord accepts my prayer.
- 1:42All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and
- 1:46anguish. They will turn back and suddenly
- 1:50beep to shame. Now that ends Psalm 6.
- 1:53So this will probably not be very long.
- 1:56But going back to the first section of this Psalm, it's
- 2:05David is asking God to be gentle with him because everything else
- 2:12that's going on in his life and, and he's recognizing that there
- 2:17are things that he does wrong. But in the midst of everything
- 2:21else that's happening and what's bringing him tears, which he
- 2:24doesn't say what it is, but he's saying just Lord, have mercy on
- 2:27me. Do not rebuke me, discipline me,
- 2:30have mercy and then heal me. And he says, I am faint like he
- 2:34is so weak. He, he just needs and he needs
- 2:37encouragement right now. He needs support.
- 2:39He's not in a place of being rebuked or disciplined for
- 2:45things that he's done. And then he's asking the Lord to
- 2:49deliver him and to save him because of his love.
- 2:53So again, David realized that it's not what he was able to do
- 2:58to accomplish anything, but it's because of God's love, which is
- 3:01true for all of us, that it's God's love that ultimately saved
- 3:07saves us. If we think about it, there is
- 3:09no greater love than to lay one's life down for another.
- 3:13And that's exactly what Jesus did for us on that cross.
- 3:17So that's the greatest love of all, was that he himself gave
- 3:21his life for us so that we could inherit the Kingdom as his
- 3:27brothers and sisters. So while David, I don't know how
- 3:32much David knew or if it was revealed to him, but he
- 3:35certainly had insight, prophetic insight with some of these
- 3:38psalms, as we learn with David, with David's words that were
- 3:44repeated by Jesus when he was on the cross.
- 3:48My, my God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 3:52And, and other things that David wrote about in the Psalms that
- 3:56we'll get to where he talks about, you know, them dividing
- 3:58up his clothes and not a brown bone was broken on the cross,
- 4:03but the jeering mockers that were at his feet and, and all
- 4:07the different descriptions that David said that really
- 4:11ultimately reflected Jesus. So there was some probably
- 4:15supernatural connection through the spirit that was maybe
- 4:19revealing these things, and that's how they were written
- 4:22down so that future generations like us get to read those things
- 4:27and learn from them. But I have Oh, and then when he
- 4:31says among the dead, no one proclaims your name, who praises
- 4:36you from the grave. I read the study Bible's
- 4:40question and answer, but I had a different like when I was
- 4:42reading through it. That's why I like to wait to
- 4:45read the questions and answers to read it first and then, you
- 4:50know, think about it and then maybe look at the questions and
- 4:53answers because and it's not that one is right or the other
- 4:57is wrong. Neither one of those, but it's
- 5:00just that I guess from our perspectives and what we've
- 5:05learned, we may have a God may speak to us in a different way.
- 5:11So reading this, it says among the dead, no one proclaims your
- 5:15name who praises you from the grave.
- 5:18The study Bible thought of it one way and I thought of it a
- 5:20different way. So I'll read you what the study
- 5:22Bible says about that. It says didn't David believe in
- 5:26life after death? David believed in life after
- 5:30death. We see that in Psalm 23 verses
- 5:32one through 6, but he seemed somewhat uncertain about
- 5:37specifics. As was common among people in
- 5:40Old Testament times, the Psalms primarily emphasize reward and
- 5:46punishment in this life rather than in the next.
- 5:50So that's the study Bibles answer.
- 5:52But when I read this among the dead, no one proclaims your name
- 5:56who praises you from the grave. My thoughts went to you know, if
- 6:02some among the dead, the dead are the ones like there's
- 6:06there's life and there's death. And if someone is dead, they are
- 6:13dead to Christ. They are only dead because they
- 6:15don't have the Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit within them.
- 6:21And if they are dead, they will not be proclaiming your name
- 6:25like anyone who goes to hell. It's because of a choice, like
- 6:30it's because of a rejection of God is ultimately what it is
- 6:35because God did this for all nations.
- 6:40And so the only ones who are going to be eternally separated
- 6:45for God from God are the ones who rejected Jesus or just
- 6:50wanted to stay in their rebellion and never, you know,
- 6:55become a reflection of Christ. So but the dead, no one
- 7:00proclaims your name. Now they will be probably
- 7:03cursing God's name in the place that they are put.
- 7:10I mean, it just, it doesn't even say that there's really words.
- 7:12It says there's weeping and gnashing of teeth.
- 7:15So there's going to be great. I don't know if it's going to be
- 7:18remorse just like unhappiness about being separated from God.
- 7:24But throughout Scripture we are warned about that.
- 7:28And so we have the time until we die to, to get, you know, to
- 7:35reconcile. That's the way I look at it, to
- 7:37reconcile with God. God made us out of love.
- 7:40So there was that. There was that love that started
- 7:43our life. But we somehow get far from God.
- 7:49And God wants to draw us back closely to him.
- 7:53And sin separates us from God. So we need that removed from our
- 8:00life. We can't do it on our own, but
- 8:03the Holy Spirit can get it out of our life and God will put us
- 8:08through testing so that we have the opportunity to make that
- 8:12choice and to, I guess like humble or submit.
- 8:19That's the word. I wanted to submit to the Holy
- 8:22Spirit's prompting. So when we, it's like when we
- 8:26feel something, I, I, you know, I used to hate guilt and I
- 8:30guess, you know, like you feel guilty.
- 8:32So OK, I'm going to do this because I feel guilty if I don't
- 8:35do this kind of a thing. I used to hate that feeling, but
- 8:38I actually am glad for that because if it's something good,
- 8:43like, you know what you should do and don't do it, that's kind
- 8:46of that's rebellion. And so it it's when we learn to
- 8:53submit to that feeling and we do things because they are the
- 8:58right things to do. And that's something that the
- 9:01Holy Spirit will show us and will guide us.
- 9:03But then it's still up to us whether we want to do that.
- 9:05So how much are we hanging on to our our sin nature and how much
- 9:10are we pushing God away when we don't submit to what we know God
- 9:16wants us to do? We are in a rebellious state and
- 9:19we are fighting against God and we haven't reconciled with him.
- 9:24And until we reconcile and get rid of that, that, that feeling
- 9:30about it again, it's, it's like you don't clean up before you go
- 9:34to God. You go to God as you are.
- 9:37He wants you as you are. He will do the cleaning up.
- 9:40But once you have the Holy Spirit impacting your life, then
- 9:43you're going to kind of go through testing and it's going
- 9:46to be like, do you really mean this?
- 9:48Are you sincere about this? If you mean this, like Jesus
- 9:52said, if you love me, you will obey my commands.
- 9:55So that's the test for us. We can, we can just say, Oh, I
- 9:59want the inheritance. You know, like everybody wants
- 10:01the inheritance, the riches of God and everything.
- 10:04But do you just want it? Are you being selfish about it?
- 10:08Or are you willing to let Jesus be Lord over your life?
- 10:13Let God guide you and submit to him.
- 10:18That's the question that people need to respond to is, I don't
- 10:23know, not need to respond, but that's our question.
- 10:26That shows whether we are being truthful about our desires to
- 10:30reconcile with God. If we just want to reconcile
- 10:33with God so that we can have the inheritance, that's pretty evil
- 10:38just to want the inheritance. There's a lot of people that
- 10:41would do that, that would say, oh, I'll be friends with him,
- 10:43I'll say his name, you know, like just so I can get the stuff
- 10:46he has promised. I mean, that's horrible, but
- 10:48there are people in life like that.
- 10:49Look at that, you all of the ugliness kind of comes out in
- 10:53somebodies passing about inheritance and not always, but
- 10:59that's when you see someone's true colors, when all of a
- 11:02sudden you think somebody is one way and all of a sudden they
- 11:05just all become about the money, about the things or, you know,
- 11:08where their God is really. And and their true, I guess
- 11:13their true feelings about do they really love the person or
- 11:16were they after the stuff? You know, you see that in
- 11:19marriages and divorces and everybody gets focused on the
- 11:23stuff. And that's not that's not the
- 11:26real thing. It's it's the person.
- 11:28Where is the relationship with the person?
- 11:30Are you after the stuff? Are you after the person?
- 11:34Or do you want God? Do you truly want to know God?
- 11:37Do you truly want to be reconciled with him?
- 11:39Do you truly want to be made one with him as our creator?
- 11:44That's what Jesus prayed for before he died on the cross.
- 11:46He said, Father, make them. I hope I'm paraphrasing.
- 11:50I hope that or I pray that they become one with us as we are one
- 11:55so that they can, so we can experience the same thing that
- 11:59Jesus experiences the relationship with the Father.
- 12:01Because it's so wonderful. And I don't know if we ever will
- 12:05receive the fullness of that relationship while we're here on
- 12:09earth because of our sinful state and because sin separately
- 12:13US. And until Jesus returns, we
- 12:16won't be perfected. And so until we get perfected, I
- 12:20don't know that we can necessarily feel that.
- 12:23But the more and more we get the impurities out of our life and
- 12:27the sin out of our life, the more the deeper I think our
- 12:33relationship with God is and the stronger that it is because we
- 12:38get rid of that stuff that shows up.
- 12:41And it's an ongoing process while we're here on earth.
- 12:43I mean, there's just going to be constant temptations,
- 12:47distractions, and other things. Those are things we have to say
- 12:52no to so that we can keep it out of our life.
- 12:55We need to build up a wall against sin and just not allow
- 13:00it in. It says resist the devil and he
- 13:03will flee. We need to resist sin because
- 13:06sin separates us from God. And that's the that's the
- 13:09devil's weapon against us is to lure us into sin so that we
- 13:15become separated. And anyway, we'll go back to his
- 13:21prayer. So he's asking.
- 13:23So anyway, it was about among the dead.
- 13:25No one proclaims your name. So if someone is dead and if
- 13:28they are separated from God, they are not going to be
- 13:30proclaiming his name because they made that choice and that's
- 13:33how they got there. They may regret that choice that
- 13:36they made because of their surroundings, because of what it
- 13:40feels like once they're there, but it's not because of their
- 13:43longing for God. They completely reject God.
- 13:47So we have to really think about think about eternity and not I
- 13:53mean, that's more important than our life here today.
- 13:57That's of greater importance. It's a longer period of time
- 14:00than what we have here on earth. And we become so short sighted
- 14:05about this time here on earth when it's only, I guess it, I
- 14:08don't know, it's James maybe who said that life is but a vapor
- 14:14that it's or a mist. Life is but a mist.
- 14:17It's here and then it's gone and but not eternal life, Eternal.
- 14:22That's forever. And there's eternal torment too
- 14:26in the other direction. There's two places that will go,
- 14:29one or the one or the other. Not both places, but we'll
- 14:32either be with in God's presence or we will be eternally
- 14:37separated. But both places are eternal.
- 14:41So going back to David Psalm, he's he's in deep remorse about
- 14:47something or I don't know if it's remorse, but he's in deep
- 14:51sadness. He's crying in bed and he's
- 14:54drenching his couch. So it's kind of like when he is
- 14:58weeping at night and then he's on his couch in the daytime or
- 15:03wherever he is all night long. I mean, or he's restless
- 15:06throughout the night and he goes from his bed to his couch.
- 15:09I don't know. But he's multiple locations and
- 15:12he's weeping and he's he has tears.
- 15:16So he has deep sadness that he's dealing with.
- 15:19And then he says his eyes grow weak with sorrow.
- 15:22So it's sadness and they fail because of all his foes.
- 15:26So it sounds like his, his sadness is coming from all the
- 15:29people who are against him and it's really making him
- 15:32distraught. I mean, that's my understanding
- 15:35of what's written. And then but he's also saying
- 15:39away from me all you who do evil.
- 15:41For the Lord has heard my weeping.
- 15:43The Lord has heard my cry. The Lord accepts my prayer all,
- 15:47and then here's his confidence in God.
- 15:50All my enemies will be overwhelmed with shame and
- 15:55anguish. They will turn back and suddenly
- 15:58be put to shame. So these people who are coming
- 16:02against him probably do not have a rightful reason for coming
- 16:06against him. And the Lord hears him and the
- 16:10Lord hears his prayers and the Lord will respond.
- 16:13He has faith and trust in, in God that God is going to
- 16:17respond. And you know, it says God, the
- 16:20Lord says the vengeance is mine. I mean, and, and God, what we
- 16:23reap, we will, are what we sow we will reap.
- 16:28So we always have to remember that as well.
- 16:32So I'll read the remaining questions and answers and then
- 16:34we'll wrap this up. So how does God discipline
- 16:38people? God is like a good father who
- 16:40punishes his disobedient child. Neither God nor a good human
- 16:47father enjoys disciplining in his child.
- 16:50Sometimes God uses physical suffering to discipline people.
- 16:54For example, David wanted healing because his bones were
- 16:58quote in agony. Other times, God causes
- 17:02emotional distress to make His point.
- 17:06David's soul was in deep anguish.
- 17:09But God also teaches us by His Word, the counsel of other
- 17:13believers, and through specific circumstances.
- 17:19Was David physically sick? He experienced physical
- 17:23symptoms. David's severe sorrow was
- 17:25accompanied by faintness and agony, anguish, groaning and
- 17:30weeping. He was speaking with poetic
- 17:32flair, probably exaggerating his emotional state, producing
- 17:36enough tears to drench. A couch is a figure of speech.
- 17:43What does soul mean? David refers referred to his
- 17:48soul as his very self, a living, conscious, personal being.
- 17:54Soul was not, as it is in contemporary thinking, equated
- 17:58with the spiritual or inner being as distinct from the
- 18:02physical body. Soul and body were two ways of
- 18:06referring to the same reality to the whole person.
- 18:11And then does God hear our prayers better when we are
- 18:15emotional? God hears our prayers regardless
- 18:19of our emotional intensity. David was an emotional person,
- 18:23so his prayers reflected that passion.
- 18:26He was honest with God and opened his heart to God.
- 18:30It's that type of intimacy, not necessarily emotional outburst,
- 18:36that God desires from us. Can prayer 'cause God to change
- 18:41someone's circumstances? Prayer nurtures, nurtures our
- 18:46relationship with God. God always responds to our
- 18:49cries, whispers and expressions of prayer.
- 18:53He promises to guard our lives and change our circumstances as
- 18:58He deems necessary and appropriate.
- 19:02But as in any good relationship, we must not use God's resources
- 19:07merely for our own ends. We must trust Him to act in our
- 19:13best interest. And that concludes Psalm 5.
- 19:18So if you found this helpful, please share this with others.
- 19:21If you're not subscribed and would like to, I try to do this
- 19:24every day, so please subscribe. And this concludes today.
- 19:28Tomorrow we will talk about Psalm 7.
