What a $18.60 Paycheck Can Change in OKC · The 405 Payroll

• 0:13
Welcome to The 405 Payroll, the lunchtime show for Oklahoma City working people who
• 0:18
want a bigger paycheck and an easier month.
• 0:21
  I'm Claire Brooks.
• 0:22
  And I'm Miles.
• 0:24
Today's episode is made for our OKCREAL neighbors, so everything we mention is
• 0:28
something you can act on from right where you live.
• 0:31
  Claire, what's the headline?
• 0:32
Two things, and they land a day apart.
• 0:35
Tomorrow, Thursday, October 22, the Oklahoma Employment Security Commission is
• 0:40
promoting the Build My Future Career Fair at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds in
• 0:45
  Norman, 615 East Robinson Street.
• 0:48
It runs from 3:00 to 5:00 in the afternoon, and it's built for adults as well as
• 0:52
students, with employers in the trades.
• 0:56
  Trades.
• 0:56
That's work where your pay tends to climb as your skills do.
• 1:00
And the listing says to bring copies of your resume, because people may interview
• 1:03
  right there.
• 1:04
  Right.
• 1:05
The official listing doesn't name the employers, so I won't guess at brands.
• 1:09
Just know it's free to walk in.
• 1:11
And if your afternoon is tied up, there's also a Veterans Job and Resource Fair in
• 1:16
Del City tomorrow from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM.
• 1:19
  Okay, you said two things.
• 1:20
  What's the second?
• 1:21
  Wages.
• 1:22
Amazon's hiring site says hourly rates for regular and seasonal warehouse associates
• 1:27
  increased effective September 27.
• 1:30
The page doesn't print the new number, and the Oklahoma City search showed no
• 1:34
matching openings when we checked, so I won't hand you a figure I can't back up.
• 1:39
What I can back up: FedEx is posting Oklahoma City package handler jobs starting at
• 1:44
  $18.60 an hour.
• 1:46
Put that in rent terms for me.
• 1:47
What does $18.60 actually do for a month?
• 1:51
Forty hours at $18.60 is $744 a week before taxes.
• 1:55
Compare that to $15 an hour, which is $600 for the same forty hours.
• 1:59
That's $144 more every week, or roughly $620 more in a month,
• 2:05
  before taxes.
• 2:06
For a lot of households, that's a real piece of the rent.
• 2:10
And nobody had to work harder to get it.
• 2:12
Same body, same forty hours, different employer.
• 2:15
  I love that.
• 2:17
  One more practical note.
• 2:18
If you file weekly unemployment claims, the state's online claimant portal will be
• 2:22
down from Friday at 5:00 PM until Saturday at 7:00 PM for maintenance.
• 2:27
You can still file a weekly claim by phone at four oh five,
• 2:30
  five two five, fifteen hundred.
• 2:32
  Good to know.
• 2:33
Alright, let's find out who's hiring.
