- Ryan Rayle (00:00.11) everybody has those right before the show things they do right like I remember I was behind the stage at a day to remember of all bands and I was kind Jose Escudero was kind enough to invite me down and graciously got me the hookup I was supposed to have just like a general admission ticket and then some somehow I got an all-access pass Skyler McCarthy (00:05.398) Yeah, yeah, totally. Skyler McCarthy (00:16.438) Nice. Skyler McCarthy (00:26.723) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (00:29.986) Don't ask me how. And I was backstage before the boys were getting ready to go on. And I had and this is how oblivious I am. I had no clue that I was talking to the drummer of a day to remember. So we're just so we're just standing backstage and we're just literally just like to shoot the shit. And he asked me like, you know, who are you? What do you do? I was like, you know, Skyler McCarthy (00:30.92) solid night. Skyler McCarthy (00:39.203) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (00:46.85) Yeah. huh. Skyler McCarthy (00:58.061) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (00:59.31) I'm just a friend of Jose's. He's like, oh, Jose's great, something, something, I was like, what do you do? I mean, and I think, I don't know if it caught him off guard. I definitely don't think that he was offended. I almost think that he was like, thank you. Like, I don't know. Skyler McCarthy (01:07.054) That's awesome. Skyler McCarthy (01:15.608) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (01:21.516) Yeah, I feel like some rock stars have to prefer that, right? They probably just want that casual conversation. They don't want you fanboying backstage. Ryan Rayle (01:27.566) Yeah. Yeah, I just, I don't know. I don't know. But anyway, I don't know. That's my drummer story for the day. Skyler McCarthy (01:37.006) He's pretty good. I really like his stuff. People think he's not like the craziest drummer in the world, but his fills and stuff. Super tasteful. Huge fan of them. Ryan Rayle (01:46.447) I mean, drummers been drumming for a long time, you know what I mean? And there's not everybody has to be like the absolute best, right? Like everybody can be like, like you just said, like, oh, his fills are fucking phenomenal. Right? Some people like Chris Turner from from across the pond in Oh my God. Ryan Oceans, Alaska. Thank you. Yeah, that dude is a wizard. Skyler McCarthy (01:51.49) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (02:03.116) Yeah, they're cool. Skyler McCarthy (02:10.67) Ocean's 8 Alaska, right? Yeah, yeah. Ryan Rayle (02:15.806) on the drum kit. And there's plenty of other people that are amazing on the drums, know, such as yourself. I heard you slap the skins from time to time. I forgot to announce the show. Welcome to the show, everybody. My name's Ryan. Thank you for joining me. Today's guest is Skyler. He is from the band 713 and also Silence Becoming. He reached out to me via email. Skyler McCarthy (02:17.055) Unbelievable, huh? Skyler McCarthy (02:27.374) Yeah Ryan Rayle (02:44.942) I am in a current, give me all of your fucking music gathering phase for Nothing But Texas Metal for the new Texas Takeover radio show that we have on No Control 93.7 or iHeartRadio or TuneIn. It's where we play Nothing But Texas Music and Skyler hit me up. And this is how crazy this is. Like, we know each other. We've spoken, we've met. Skyler McCarthy (03:11.532) Yeah, yeah, yeah. We've met. Ryan Rayle (03:14.92) And I had no clue about this project 719 until he sent it to me. And I literally asked him, like, I'm sorry, who are you and where is this from? And and that's not a knock on, you know, who Skyler is as a person or relationship. It's just I didn't. For those who don't know, drummers are in like 14 projects. They are they are a very valuable resource and guitar, guitarist, bassist, vocalist. Skyler McCarthy (03:36.504) Yeah, very true. Ryan Rayle (03:44.707) Get out of here. Drummers have the most, I think drummers have the most responsibility on stage. That's personally and for everybody else, it's not a drummer that knows me. I'm sorry. We can talk about this. Maybe we can make this the great debate of 26, right? Why is your fucking job important on stage? But I don't want it to become a pissing contest. And the next thing you know, like, well, Skyler McCarthy (04:00.636) Ha Skyler McCarthy (04:08.77) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (04:11.5) You guys were talking on the podcast that you're da da da da da da da and you made me feel like a little whiny. Anyway, doesn't matter. Maybe you play. Anyway, go ahead and introduce yourself, who you are, where you're from, what projects you're in and what you like to do as a hobby. Skyler McCarthy (04:18.05) Maybe you should play drums, I don't know man. Maybe we should pick up the drums. Skyler McCarthy (04:26.925) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (04:30.51) Totally, yeah. So my name is Skyler McCarthy. Gonna give you one strike on the board, Ryan. Initially you said 713, it's 719. No, got it right the second time, hilarious. Yeah, I'm also in Silence Becoming and then I've started demoing out some ideas for like a new project. I don't have a name, I don't have a group, I've just got a few things laying around. Yeah, so I play drums in those projects. I do a lot of the production and mixing for Silence Becoming as well. Ryan Rayle (04:37.294) 719 sorry Back! Skyler McCarthy (04:58.646) actually me and Oscar from Inside the Hollow trade off those duties. So that's been fun to get to talk to him and do that. And then outside of music, I do rock climbing and go mountaineering and go backpacking in the summers. So yeah. Ryan Rayle (05:12.664) Hell yeah. Hell yeah. I just recently went to Big Bend and Taralingua. Have you ever been out there? my goodness, man. If for anybody listening that lives within, I mean, we drove, I think it's eight hours from Austin, roughly. Yeah. I did none of the driving, so I'm not complaining about anything. And so I did all of the riding, shotgun, took a couple naps on the way there. Skyler McCarthy (05:19.894) Yeah, love those places. Skyler McCarthy (05:29.762) Mm-hmm. Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (05:40.704) Nice. Ryan Rayle (05:41.775) And, you know, you you start out in this because everybody knows West Texas is just fucking flat, right? But you get far enough and here come the mountains. I mean, the the current administration wants to put a fucking border wall on the edge of a fucking cliff. And if you've ever been to this one specific area, Skyler McCarthy (05:51.139) Yep. Skyler McCarthy (06:00.75) Put a wall. Put a wall through it. Ryan Rayle (06:10.85) that's in question right now. It's where the Rio Grande kind of comes out of this. shoot, this kind of Canyon looking thing. There you go. Yeah. So I actually that was one of the very first places that we went to and we walked all the way walked up the side all the way back to get to see the car. Anyway, is fucking beautiful. And that was when I was looking up some stuff I saw that you would Skyler McCarthy (06:18.252) Yeah, Sinta Elenio Canyon. Skyler McCarthy (06:34.488) cool. Ryan Rayle (06:40.728) been you enjoy a good hike or two so is that how long you've been I know we hear about the music but I like to learn about the person how long you've been been enjoying that kind of stuff Skyler McCarthy (06:48.568) Yeah, totally, totally. Skyler McCarthy (06:54.094) pretty much as long as I can remember when I was Like four or five my grandparents took me to Colorado for the first time We used to go camping out there every summer and my older cousin is a hundred times more daring more adventurous than me And so you take me on all these crazy hikes and adventures and when he eventually moved away to college I would get bored and I was like well shit somebody's gonna do all this crazy stuff now, so I started Ryan Rayle (07:18.824) Hahaha. Skyler McCarthy (07:20.334) forcing my friends to go and have them tag along and yeah, group of buddies and I went to Big Bend in 2022. We did the tallest peak in the park. We did the canyon you're talking about. We went through the hot springs. I don't know if you went there. Oh dude, yeah, totally you've got to go. Had javelinas and coyotes raid our food. Yeah, it was wild. We were staying like, it's already a super remote park. Ryan Rayle (07:35.286) No, that was that's on the to do list on the to do list. Ryan Rayle (07:43.66) Ooh. Skyler McCarthy (07:49.976) but we were staying in one of the more remote ends of it. And I remember waking up at three in the morning to this noise and I couldn't figure out what it was and I unzipped the tent. Just a pack of like 10 of the hugest coyotes you've ever seen. And they're like sniffing the door of my car trying to get in. It's, Big Ben's a crazy place to load out there. Ryan Rayle (07:58.392) You Ryan Rayle (08:06.387) Just like, excuse me. Zzzzip. I was not here. I mean, that's that's fair. Well, cool, man. Yeah, we can we can talk more about that later. I just wanted to I think it's I think it's fun. It was we went out there for a week cold as a mother. We went January and that's not. Skyler McCarthy (08:08.918) Yeah, it's like I'm going back to sleep. Yeah, if I can't see them they can't eat me. That's how it goes. Skyler McCarthy (08:22.744) Totally. Skyler McCarthy (08:29.794) Yup. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (08:34.807) That was not fun. And winds were steady at about 30 miles an hour. So the tent was literally just like laying on me when I was sleeping. my god. Terrible. Skyler McCarthy (08:42.83) man, yeah one more story about that than what kind of music that same time we went It was right after a freeze like one of the big freezes and We forgot the tent poles in the tent and I'd do a five-hour round trip to the closest Walmart to buy a four-man tent Yeah stuck in there freezing hilarious Ryan Rayle (08:48.525) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (09:00.738) my goodness. Ah man, good times, good times. Well, let's get on to other good times. 719, not 713. My eyes deceived me earlier. No. So that seems to be your solo project. So how did that come about? Was that born from something, you know, some other band project that you were like, well, you guys can keep going? Give us a little brief bio about it. Skyler McCarthy (09:07.404) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (09:10.914) Cool. Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (09:33.772) Yeah, so I grew up in a small town west of Houston called Sealy and I got really into metal when I was 12 and my dad was a drummer and he had a drum set around the house and so between him and YouTube I kind of taught myself but coming from a small town the only two kinds of music people were playing were country and western and I wanted to write metal music and so I was like shit now I've got to pick up the guitar and the bass Ryan Rayle (09:52.49) wow. Skyler McCarthy (10:02.862) So it just kind of came out of necessity. I wanted to write music and I didn't have the resources, the people around me, so I did it on my own. Yeah, it started out kind of honestly a little thrashy around 2018, 2019. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (10:07.543) Ryan Rayle (10:17.933) As a fledgling Texas band does, think... Yeah, I feel like that from what I've heard from various people I've talked to is when you start out that young, it kind of is a... What can I do? Like how can I... Because I mean, everybody has different influences. So like who are some of the bands or people... Skyler McCarthy (10:21.664) Yeah, as a teenager does, right? Just how fast can I play? Skyler McCarthy (10:37.411) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (10:45.505) that got you into music? Like who were you listening to that you were like, I gotta fucking play this? Skyler McCarthy (10:51.488) Yeah, for drums, the band that really drove me to keep playing was Avenged Sevenfold. I always thought they had some just, well, crazy instrumentation overall, but the drums are just so fun to play, even if they're painfully hard to learn. And so that kept pressing me to do better and better. Guitar, Teenager, definitely Metallica. I was really into them for a while. 90 % of what I know how to play on the guitar is in my own music, it's probably still them. And then funny enough when Ryan Rayle (10:58.029) Okay. Ryan Rayle (11:05.709) Ha ha. Skyler McCarthy (11:22.038) It came time to play bass, was like, kinda like everybody else, was like, bass is lame, I don't wanna play bass, I'll just, whatever. And funny enough, it's Mike Durnt from Green Day is the reason I decided to go through with it. I love the Dookie album, the bass lines on that are super melodic, super groovy, and yeah, after that I was like, so bass can be fun. Ryan Rayle (11:34.925) All right. Ryan Rayle (11:45.785) It's like, yeah, it's that one tool in the shed that, you know, when you don't need it, you don't necessarily, or like, when you have it, you don't necessarily need it all the time. But when you need it, you definitely know. You're like, I fucking need it. And yeah, I'm a big fan. Again, like you said, I wasn't a huge Skyler McCarthy (12:00.494) Mm-hmm. You need it. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (12:11.083) I didn't pay attention to the bass the way that I should have been paying attention to the bass because it is when it's not there, you know it unless of course, unless somebody backtracks it, right? mean, but even still, if you're, if you, if you have a good ear, you can, you can pick it up and obviously you'll notice the fucking missing bassist on the stage. Right? Skyler McCarthy (12:15.555) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (12:21.26) It's gone. Skyler McCarthy (12:35.694) Yeah, definitely Ryan Rayle (12:39.533) like where's this bass coming from? Is it backtracked? Like, I don't know. Is there a human standing there? Of course not. But so whenever you were putting together your projects, so that came, so you've had 719, I'm assuming is that an area code? Skyler McCarthy (12:57.358) is part of my street address growing up. yeah, just kind of pulled it out of nowhere and we went with it. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (13:00.245) Okay, sure. Yeah. All right. So, so 719 solo project from that was basically just born out of your, I guess, boredom or lust to learn how to just play music, right? Okay. Mainly lust. I want you. Skyler McCarthy (13:18.73) Yeah, mainly lust. Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (13:41.75) I'm sorry. Ryan Rayle (13:42.093) Aww. Ryan Rayle (13:46.978) Sorry, I can just envision you and every other just artist in their younger days. like, puts down the, you're just like, that's it. That's the best, that's the best ever. Ever. Skyler McCarthy (13:57.773) Yep, it's a wrap, it's perfect. Skyler McCarthy (14:02.926) These 12 songs recorded on Audacity will change metal forever. Obviously not. Yeah, so that was like a stinker of a debut and funny enough this band found me. Their band name was Indisposed. They were out of Bakersfield, California. They found me online and the vocalist messaged me and he goes, hey, your songwriting is really good. Your recording fucking sucks. Here, I have a Studio One key that's the Ryan Rayle (14:13.137) my god. Ryan Rayle (14:29.469) Ha! Skyler McCarthy (14:33.08) digital audio workstation, I use now. He's like, I have an extra key, please take it and learn it and stop making shit music. Just a random dude. Yeah, and so I still use, I still bum off of their account today. Ryan Rayle (14:40.886) Wow. Ryan Rayle (14:45.943) Hold on. Where's my pen? here we go. So what was the band's name? Skyler McCarthy (14:53.099) indisposed. Ryan Rayle (14:55.814) i n d i s p o s e d Skyler McCarthy (14:58.702) Yeah, they broke up a few years ago, but they've got a couple things on Spotify. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (15:03.019) Doesn't matter. want to, I want, do you know who contacted you? The reason is I'm going to try and reach out to them and be like, Hey man, I want to know why you offered Skyler a Studio One key for absolutely no reason. Skyler McCarthy (15:06.946) Yes. Skyler McCarthy (15:15.848) yeah, we're good friends now. I flew out to California last year to hang out with them. Yeah, we kept up. Yeah. I can get you all that info after this if you want, for sure. Okay. Ryan Rayle (15:18.285) you've... shit. Then okay, then I don't need to write shit down. Okay. Yeah, that's I love to kind of like leapfrog into stories. That's funny. It's just so what song did he what song was he saying? Or was it just overall like hey, man, you got good. So it was like you got good bones. Okay, okay. Skyler McCarthy (15:31.138) Yeah, totally. Skyler McCarthy (15:39.712) It was just overall, like I've, I've, yeah. I've taken that album down now. Essentially, yeah. But everything else sucked. I think verbatim what he said. Ryan Rayle (15:52.77) That's hilarious. Yeah, I know sometimes I mean you get too close. You get too close to your music sometimes and you and like you said, whether it's 16 year old you or 26 year old you or hell, 46 year old you, it's always good to get another opinion. You know, like I I know that on Sirius XM they have this segment called Test Drive. Now, obviously the songs are good because they've they've made it to the radio. OK. Skyler McCarthy (15:58.606) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (16:08.374) Yeah, definitely. Skyler McCarthy (16:16.014) Mhm. Ryan Rayle (16:22.401) that's subjective as well, but they're good enough to get on the radio. They're getting somebody's attention, right? And so the test drive is, we play this one all the time? Not all the time, but do we play this one on the radio? Do we play this on the radio? So they're test driving these two songs. And I thought about doing that as well with artists on the Texas Takeover, but I know that not all the music that's gonna come into my inbox is gonna be... Skyler McCarthy (16:26.477) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (16:52.685) There's going to be some ugly babies if you know what I'm right? And as much as I would love to put that music on the radio just so everybody can have that warm and fuzzy like, yeah, my fucking song's on the radio. I don't want them to get like hate mail the next day. Skyler McCarthy (16:53.742) Yeah, yeah Skyler McCarthy (17:08.547) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (17:09.229) and then their, you know, dreams get crushed and not be able to take some constructive criticism because, you know, like, oh, that clean section right there could have been a little bit better, but, you know, then you see them on the back of a milk carton. But so 719 has this kind of like definitely metalcore. What were some of the other influences that went into this? And I'm assuming you produced it all. Skyler McCarthy (17:32.536) Mm-hmm. Skyler McCarthy (17:38.96) I did, yes. The big influence for the Human Element album was Kingdom of Giants. It's a metalcore band. Yeah, so their album Passenger, thought, like I knew synths were gonna come back into metal because nostalgia is cyclical, right? And a lot of people were feeling the 80s five, 10 years ago. And of course, synths were big in the 80s. was like, synths are gonna come into metalcore. Ryan Rayle (17:46.613) Hi there, hell yeah dude, I'm fan. Ryan Rayle (18:01.335) Mm-hmm. Skyler McCarthy (18:05.451) and Kingdom of Giants, I feel like they did it in a way that wasn't cheesy, because, you know, mean 80 cents goes hand in hand with cheesy, but they made it really dark and moody and so I... that kind of lit a fire under my ass to figure out how they did that and whether or not I achieved that is up for debate, but it was, yeah, there was a huge inspiration for that album was them. Ryan Rayle (18:19.44) okay. you Ryan Rayle (18:26.753) Yeah, Kingdom of Giants is definitely one of those bands that... It's really interesting how bands, I don't want to say come and go, but how they come and go and how you experience them as just an individual. Because I know for a fact that I've bought some Kingdom of Giants albums on iTunes back in the day. Now, which albums? I have no clue. Skyler McCarthy (18:27.428) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (18:43.214) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (18:50.873) Mm-hmm. Ryan Rayle (18:53.485) Which songs were popular back then? I don't know. But if they were to come on a shuffle or a playlist, I could probably be like, shit, is that Kingdoms? hell yeah. then, you know what I mean? But do you think that your music will ever do that for somebody down the road? Skyler McCarthy (19:07.841) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (19:16.623) I hope so. What's funny is that same sort of stinker albums I'll occasionally get people messaging me and they're like, you put that back? Like I miss that sound. I hear stuff that reminds me of those albums and I want to hear them again. I'm like, I can't do that to myself. Ryan Rayle (19:31.885) Like just Skyler McCarthy (19:36.687) So yeah, I hope there's more people in the future that hear me and they go, I know who that is, or I can pick that out immediately. Ryan Rayle (19:45.869) So how does the... I guess, is there any relation to 719 and Silence Becoming? I mean, that is 1000 % divorced of each other. Skyler McCarthy (19:58.448) No, there's definitely some relation, so Jacob, the vocalist for Silence Becoming is on a few of the 719 songs and that's how we initially met. Ryan Rayle (20:00.652) Okay. Ryan Rayle (20:07.861) Wait, Jacob that's also in Broken Time? Okay. I was like, dude, dude, was like, God, was like, dude, Jake, Jake from Broken Time has like a million projects. My God. I thought I was busy. No, that dude is on another fucking planet. But anyway. So we got Silence Becoming. the vocalist. Yes. Skyler McCarthy (20:10.965) No, different Jacob. But yeah, he's a great guy though. I love Jake. Skyler McCarthy (20:20.9) he's everywhere. Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (20:28.323) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (20:35.375) Yes, yes, yeah. So, Two bands. Ryan Rayle (20:36.831) Okay, sorry. Two Jacobs, two vocalists, two bands, both busy as fuck people. Okay, got it. Skyler McCarthy (20:43.599) Yeah, okay, yeah, so he was on a few of those songs on the album and he was like, well, you know, my band needs a drummer. And so I was like, okay, I'll play drums for a few shows. And then it turned into, well, we need more songs. So I started writing more songs because he was like, I really dig that seven one ad album. Can you keep doing that? And so we've got Downfall, called Lost Sight. and two more that we're finishing up right now that are all spawned out of, hey, can you keep doing that, but a little different. So yeah, there's definitely some overlap there. Ryan Rayle (21:12.237) You Ryan Rayle (21:17.207) Do you ever plan on creating a live set? Or is it strictly going to be just stuff that you put online? Skyler McCarthy (21:29.327) I think it would be cool to throw 719 songs into a silence becoming set. I don't see myself making a full band, live band for it just because it's a huge task to be like, okay, so you're going to play guitar, here's everything I've tabbed out, here's the... I'd rather already have a group ready to go because those guys all have expressed a want to play some of the songs. So I'd rather just, you know, throw in, burn every once in a while or against the grain is another big one for people. Yeah, just whenever we're feeling it. Ryan Rayle (21:36.331) I gotcha. Ryan Rayle (21:43.341) you Ryan Rayle (21:53.935) I got you. So it's more or less we've got these little we got we got these little these little trinkets back here that we like to mess with from time to time but not enough to really make it a full-fledged living and breathing band that play shows. Okay. So what's the difference so what so the fact that you guys like to play them what's the Skyler McCarthy (22:13.089) Yeah, exactly. Ryan Rayle (22:20.926) sonically what's different I mean between silence and 7-1 7-1-9 Ryan Rayle (22:31.0) I mean, you could be like, Ryan, there's nothing. They're the exact same thing. Skyler McCarthy (22:35.439) I mean honestly the first few songs that I wrote for them is fairly close to 719. Yeah, essentially a conversation was just an extension of that sound. Silence Becoming is definitely going more melodic though. One of the songs that we're working on right now, the second verse is no guitars, it's just piano. Piano and a voice. it's not... don't really have that going on with 719. Also 719, because it's mainly Ryan Rayle (22:50.126) Okay. Ryan Rayle (22:56.568) Ooh, okay. Skyler McCarthy (23:05.315) like the online thing only, can do a lot of stuff with tracking that you can't necessarily pull off live. I can do tons of weird pitch shifting or layer 10 guitars all playing something different that you can't pull off. So yeah, there's a few songs like that where it just, it would never work in a live band and silence becoming also sometimes you have to take in consideration, this is a real band, I gotta play this. Ryan Rayle (23:16.482) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (23:26.199) It's like I cannot play anything above 200 BPM, so please. Skyler McCarthy (23:31.319) Yeah. Like some of these breakdowns, I'm never playing live, thank God, but they sound cool. They sound awesome. Ryan Rayle (23:35.831) Yeah. I think it is neat that that's something that you can toy with and then just kind of stash it somewhere and maybe revisit it from time to time. But it's still good enough to release, right? And people will hit you up and be like, hey, how'd you do that? Excuse me. I was a, go ahead. Skyler McCarthy (23:45.774) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (23:53.069) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (24:00.657) All good. If I could... I was gonna say I wanted to flip the script on you for a second, because I did send you a few songs and I was curious why you chose burn out of what you heard. Ryan Rayle (24:10.452) I, you know, I listened to both of them. can't remember. I remember Burn was the second option. In preparation was the first one. Yeah. I just, I don't know. I really honestly, I can't tell you right now, but what I will do is I'll listen to them again because I'm just, I'm the kind of person like I'll just make that decision in the moment. Right. Because I've also had the same, you know, Skyler McCarthy (24:17.488) Hmm. In preparation is the... yeah, yeah, Skyler McCarthy (24:35.322) Yeah, totally. Ryan Rayle (24:38.85) bands will send two, three songs and I'll pick one and they'll go, Hey, why that one? I don't know. Probably because it has more ones and zeros than the other one does. Like I'm pretty, I'm a pretty caveman style guy when it comes to music. I, I, I enjoy music for, for man. Actually, I mean, there's a ton of reasons. I mean, just like the, just like the reason why you guys create the music. There's obviously reasons why we consume the music. for me, I just... I'm not... Okay, I'll just say this. I'm not a lyrics guy, right? Like, I can get into lyrics because people... People ask me, they're like, Ryan, you never ask anyone about the fucking lyrics. And it's like... Because I don't care, right? I mean... Skyler McCarthy (25:15.172) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (25:22.031) Haha. That's hilarious because I was fully prepared for that question. was like, is is... Ryan Rayle (25:30.284) yeah, but we can talk about it. But it's just for me, I am more into how does it make me feel, move, think. I go for a lot of runs. So a lot of stuff is kind of BPM based, you know, like one fifty five to one sixty five. Dude, try running to a fucking hardcore song. It is not an easy task because the can the tempo just Skyler McCarthy (25:38.628) Mm-hmm. Skyler McCarthy (25:46.877) yeah. Skyler McCarthy (25:56.431) No. Ryan Rayle (25:59.8) falls off the face of the earth. anyway. But yeah, I like the music for the music. Lyrics, if you can understand them. I was just having a conversation. Somebody said that one of the reasons why Randy Blythe is one of the goats is because you could actually understand him through all of that. And I could appreciate that. I definitely. Skyler McCarthy (26:22.147) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (26:25.863) Yeah, because whenever somebody doesn't understand it, they're like, he must be mad at his dad. Like, no, he's talking about some celestial being that's coming down to rob our souls. No big deal. Right. So, so I guess, yeah, let's talk about let's talk about what burns about what what do lyrics mean, Skyler? No, no, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (26:31.702) Yeah, right? Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (26:47.376) Yeah, sure. What is it about? I was fully prepared for it, no, I mean... Ryan Rayle (26:54.731) I just try not to corner people into those standard like, hey, what's your favorite color? You know? But yes. Skyler McCarthy (26:57.135) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (27:00.912) Yeah, so that one specifically so like the whole album overall is called the human element just because it's kind of about I don't know like growing being a young adult essentially just like going through the different phases of being young adults all written from experience and that one's kind of like a Frustration I have with sort of you see you caught online culture social media people were really really quick to go online and talk about, I don't know, just express their opinions, right? But nobody really does anything to back it up. Like, we use a crazy off the wall example, because I don't want to pinhole politically or anything like that, but then, you know, like the Epstein thing, right? So everybody knows that that's bad, and all they can do is go online and say that's bad, but it's kind of hard to take those steps, and so it's like, hey man, why aren't you doing more about it? So it's just kind of frustration, like, Ryan Rayle (27:46.561) Ryan Rayle (27:57.196) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (27:58.959) Back it up, sort of. Ryan Rayle (28:01.357) So that's the whole song, well not the whole song, the Human Element album. It's about doing more? Did I miss? okay, sorry. Skyler McCarthy (28:10.642) the burn specifically. Burn specifically is about doing is like, yeah, you know, just back up what you talk about kind of just the frustration with that. Ryan Rayle (28:17.901) Like, it's like you can be typey typey, but you want to be fist to cuffy. You know, yeah, there is a God. OK, so I'm 42. I may not look it. I know I moisturize every night. Lovely face. How old are you? 25. Oh, Whole fucking almost two decades between us. Yeah, I definitely can remember when. Oh, God. Skyler McCarthy (28:22.84) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (28:33.744) I'm 25. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (28:48.365) Back in my day when we used to have AOL and Yahoo Messenger chat, those were the days. Those were the fucking the golden years of the internet when MySpace and Top 8s and I don't know, the fucking pedophiles and the creepers were always there, right? I mean, we just didn't know about it. And that's kind of like... Skyler McCarthy (28:54.85) Mmm. The classics. Skyler McCarthy (29:12.206) Yeah, yeah. Ryan Rayle (29:17.761) man, because I've had this conversation before. It was when the dark net was literally dark, when only the people that knew about the dark net were on the dark net sharing all this shit. And that was like 0.0001 % of the population, right? The rest of us were running around fucking bonfires with fifths of Jägermeister having unprotected sex and, you know. Skyler McCarthy (29:32.261) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (29:44.386) just normal, normal, don't know, I call it normal kid shit, but I can't, you know, for me, for the, for the 90s, 80s, 90s era growing up, we didn't have any social media to turn to. So if we needed to, you know, have a conversation with somebody, it was meet me at the flagpole at like fucking 5pm, you know, and, and we can, and we can settle this. I mean, it's, Skyler McCarthy (29:51.375) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (30:06.906) Ha Skyler McCarthy (30:11.023) Yeah? Ryan Rayle (30:12.149) It's interesting because yeah, get the, you know, as they call them, the keyboard warriors. But for burn, are you so like like you'd mentioned, you'd mentioned the Epstein files and going online and saying something is bad, but the actual the actual like doing something, is it in regard to like anything that you run your mouth about or anything that you criticize? Or is it just specifically about Skyler McCarthy (30:23.79) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (30:41.069) about the Epstein files. Okay. It's a popular, it's a popular topic. Skyler McCarthy (30:43.972) It was kind of general, just... Yeah, I was just thinking about something topical right now. Yeah. No, it's just any sort of like... I don't want to say the word activism, but kind of like that. Like, yeah, dude, just... And some of these causes are good that people are ranting about online. Like, there's some causes I fully support, of course, but just typing online doesn't change the world. And it might make you look good in your bubble, and that's a much better way to phrase it. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (30:56.929) Yeah. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (31:11.915) maybe don't do so much virtue signaling and instead of just going online and saying thoughts and prayers to whatever, you actually go and do something to help said... I gotcha. Okay. It takes a minute for my brain to kind of go from point A to point B, but we get there. We get there. Skyler McCarthy (31:16.332) Yeah, yes, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (31:31.503) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (31:40.181) makes for good TV and plus also documentaries about people going senile in their 40s. So we're here. We're here. So Skyler, outside of the music life and hiking and adventuring, what else do you like to do, Skyler McCarthy (31:59.279) I mean that eats up, that eats up a lot. I work from home which is great so I get to take breaks during the day if the dog isn't currently in the room but having a dog to walk and play with great. I got a great support system I mean on top of random people sending me half hate but also half support through the internet where they give you a know free program. I got a wonderful, wonderful parents that Ryan Rayle (31:59.542) What gets you through the day? Ryan Rayle (32:08.493) Cool. Ryan Rayle (32:23.222) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (32:27.34) have supported this entire thing, like the current drum set I use live was a gift from them and so that that certainly helps in all regards and then also outside of hiking to keep up with friends and family all across the country or the world I've got and we love to play Helldivers on PlayStation that's always a great kickback. Yeah, I don't know if you're much of a gamer or anything. It's Ryan Rayle (32:29.495) Cool. Ryan Rayle (32:33.488) nice. Ryan Rayle (32:46.541) I'm sorry, Helldivers? What is... I'm not familiar. Skyler McCarthy (32:55.008) group of you and three buddies and you go into alien planets and you fight increasingly difficult waves of... they're basically giant bugs and you just blow... it's blow shit up the video game but... but you get to talk to... no no no, mean that's like pretty much all you do though is you just blow shit up and so it's a great way to keep up with friends and family outside of Texas Ryan Rayle (33:02.517) Okay. wait, is it literally called blow shit up? Okay. Ryan Rayle (33:16.663) So it's more of instead of a board game at the dinner table, it's an online game and everybody at the dinner table is there chitchatting. Okay, yeah, I got you, Yeah, just blowin' shit up. No, that's good. That's good. I know I have my group chat with my fraternity brothers. That's just on Messenger, but then I also have... Skyler McCarthy (33:25.922) Yeah, yeah. And we're blowing shit up? always... yeah. Ryan Rayle (33:44.002) There's people that still play Call of Duty Warzone, you know, we're we're we are out there and we're also in our 30s and 40s. So because, dude, I don't know what it was, but Warzone was just the game during covid. And that's like all I saw online was just clips of this, you know. Skyler McCarthy (33:47.212) man, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (34:00.463) Yeah, it was. Ryan Rayle (34:05.773) one streamer like stone mountain 64 or something just yeah we're jumping in and then next thing you know I think battlefield came out and then everybody took a everybody's shit on call of duty and then I don't know I'm not I'm not a gamer I just I just play a couple game but yeah me and the guys get together they're here in Texas but obviously Texas is fucking huge so yeah dude Skyler McCarthy (34:21.06) Death. Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (34:28.176) Huge. Eight hours to Big Ben like we talked about. Insane. Ryan Rayle (34:32.395) Yeah, I remember I had to take a trip from Alice, Texas to Odessa. First time I'd ever driven in Texas. He's like, he's like, take that truck. Here's $400 cash. Go get this part. Come back tomorrow. I'm like, come back tomorrow. He's like, yeah, you're staying the night at a hotel. like, how fucking far? I look up how far I was like, my God, eight and half hours. Fuck, I'm dry. Like he's like, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (34:52.464) Yeah Ryan Rayle (34:56.701) And anyway, I digress. But yeah, we get together in game occasionally. It's hard to kind of get together like we used to because it used to be like every Saturday at noon or something. I forget what our time frame locked in was. outside of those games, outside of that game, is there anything else you get down on? Skyler McCarthy (35:18.768) outside of game. Gaming wise, mean, Battlefield a little bit. We've been playing it less and less, but now Helldivers has been the bread and butter for the past two or three months. It's just, it's good fun. Yeah, it's blowing shit up you. Good laughs and then good conversation in between missions and stuff. It's just, it's the game for us right now. So yeah. Ryan Rayle (35:31.821) just blowing shit up. Ryan Rayle (35:41.102) That's what I like. See, like, OK, so today's Sunday. So obviously Sunday, fun day. What's going to happen for me today. So by the time this comes out, this what I'm about to say has already happened. But I have an interview after this with a band called No Suffer from El Paso, some real fucking stanky stuff. And then I have to go to the Varials show tonight and come and take it. Skyler McCarthy (36:06.007) nice. Ryan Rayle (36:07.789) They're playing with Unity TX and a couple other bands, but I just want to see Varials because I'm ready for some just I Haven't I haven't seen a straight-up just like heavy show in a long time. So I'm just I'm just gonna go I'm gonna go stretch my legs a little bit Get some X. Yeah, man. Just fucking knuckle draggin Just I can't wait man Skyler McCarthy (36:19.364) Yeah, yeah, totally. Skyler McCarthy (36:24.932) Those caveman riffs. Skyler McCarthy (36:32.496) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (36:33.367) Plus Unity TX, man, there is such a... I just played one of their songs on the Texas Takeover. They're such a good band, underrated. So I hope this tour that they're on with Varioals kind of helps shine a light on them. Skyler McCarthy (36:46.872) Yeah, I agree. I think I started following them a couple years ago and yeah, I'm surprised they're not bigger. Ryan Rayle (36:50.443) Yeah. Yeah, I think, I think, I think they're going to get their. man, I would like to see them do better this year, if not definitely next year. So hopefully they keep jumping on some tours. Like I said, with bigger names just to kind of get the exposure. And that's kind of what the Texas Takeover is all about is to kind of help, you know, get artists like yourself. Skyler McCarthy (37:14.212) Yeah? Ryan Rayle (37:14.861) on and and literally just in front of new people and new ears and who knows somebody might be listening to it one day and go damn that was really good i need to contact them and you know whether whether it's for a collaboration or whether it's to you know a venue owner or promoter that likes your sound i'm you know so if you're listening to this if you're watching this thank you very much i'm sure Skyler McCarthy (37:25.892) Yeah, I mean... Ryan Rayle (37:41.674) Skyler and the rest of the artists enjoyed you guys supporting this little thing we got going on here. if you're in a band or if you know someone in a band, have them submit their songs. I need the actual songs. So send the mastered files or whatever to austintxmetalatgmail.com. And then we will have a chit chat. Hopefully. Hopefully we can get your shit on the radio. Skyler McCarthy (38:04.206) Check. Ryan Rayle (38:06.829) Skyler, you guys got any you got anything coming up personally like with with the 719 project and then silence becoming Skyler McCarthy (38:07.416) You guys got the... Skyler McCarthy (38:15.96) Yeah, so for 719, I just started demoing out ideas a week ago. Another total off the wall just influence into the metal, but Joji is like a pop R &B artist. don't know, he's rather big and he just put out an album. But all the songs are like, the longest song is probably two, two and a half minutes. And so I had the idea. Yeah, I had the idea. was like, Ryan Rayle (38:23.181) Okay. Ryan Rayle (38:32.214) Okay. Ryan Rayle (38:41.397) Ooh, playing hardcore roles, Skyler McCarthy (38:45.188) Dude, I'm just gonna write, I'm calling it ADHD metal. like two minutes max, totally just, you know, for that short attention span that we've all got now, just off the walls metalcore. And I'm trying to get a collaboration on at least every song. Cause I love doing collaborations for the music. Like I haven't gone into it yet, but even burn features, my friend Jay doing a lot of the super brutal low stuff in there. So it's just always fun to work with other people. So that's for someone nine. Ryan Rayle (39:09.57) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (39:13.993) Excuse me. Skyler McCarthy (39:14.02) This house be coming, we got a... Got a couple songs that are about to be wrapped up recording wise. Probably in the next month or so they should be mixed. We got a show May 30th in San Marcos. Bar called Ragnars. Yeah, yeah, here we are. Ryan Rayle (39:27.501) Hey, okay. Oh yeah, you're playing Ragnar's? Who else you guys playing with down there? Skyler McCarthy (39:34.448) KLTR release the captive, and I think there's one more I can't remember right now unfortunately, but yeah. Ryan Rayle (39:37.035) ooo Ryan Rayle (39:41.003) Let and that's when let's see today's March 29th or May March 29th. What's you said May? Dude, let's let's do some teamwork on this and reach out to the rest of that lineup. And just have them contact me and we'll we'll build a we'll build a fuck. Say the word, Ryan. God damn, what am I trying to think of like like a PR push? We'll we'll get. Skyler McCarthy (39:46.176) May 30th, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (40:06.756) Okay. Ryan Rayle (40:08.75) We'll do like one of these for each band and then we'll put it all together as a PR. Anyway. Marketing. Do the email. Yeah. Yeah. Then I can set everything up. Cool. Ragnar's Silence Becoming with Release and KLTR. KLTR's good. They put on quite the show. Hello. Skyler McCarthy (40:13.24) Alright, yeah, do you want me to have them contact your email or Instagram? okay, totally. Ryan Rayle (40:32.686) hahahahah Skyler McCarthy (40:34.288) Speaking of silence becoming, yeah. What? One second. I'm talking to Ryan. We need to get everybody playing May 30th to reach out to Ryan and we're all gonna do a show. Oh. But I'm doing a show right now. Bye Ryan. Ryan Rayle (40:40.376) Dude! Ryan Rayle (40:46.382) man. Ryan Rayle (40:55.237) Hey buddy. Oh my God. That's lit. I just heard a door open. was like, dude, he's about to get fucking killed on live TV. This is not going to be good. Oh man. Oh, who was that? I saw him peek in. Oh man, that must be great for making music. I mean, yeah, I've talked to a band members where they live together and they're like, I've got an idea. Come into my room or whatever. Skyler McCarthy (41:01.456) We live together actually, so... That was Jacob, yeah. Skyler McCarthy (41:19.504) Yeah, that's how it works. We save so much on studio, uh, studio booking just because I'm like, all right, let's record right here in the office. Yeah, totally. Ryan Rayle (41:27.236) of course. Yeah. man, that was hilarious. I could just. And then everybody's just kind of like, what? Yeah, so it's like, been great, Skyler. Your your music will live on. All right, bud. Well, I appreciate your time, man. Is there anything else that you want to sure? Do we miss anything? Skyler McCarthy (41:31.426) Yeah Skyler McCarthy (41:49.828) Yeah, of course. Skyler McCarthy (41:55.729) I don't think so. went over all the 719 stuff, we went over... Signs of Becoming, the show we're doing, yeah. No, thanks for having me on, man. I appreciate that. And, uh, what time does the takeover start? When do you... Ryan Rayle (42:00.172) Yeah. Cool. man. Ryan Rayle (42:07.629) Takeover starts Okay, so I'll give a little pitch here. So every Sunday on no control radio at 8 p.m. Central You can go to like if you just Google search no control listen live that'll take you right to the website on KLBJ If you hear locally in the Austin area, it's 93.7 HD 2 most cars from 2015 to current have an HD setting, you just have to go into your settings and find it. And it'll just be like HD radio on. And then all these new channels just come out of nowhere. Like here locally, the local KUT is 90.5, but on the HD channel, like HD2 is the BBC. And then HD3 is their sister station, KUTX. then KUT, anyway, long story short. There's things hidden inside the wavelengths. if you get out of your car. But but no. So like I said, locals, ninety three point seven HD to no control radio or you can just search for no control radio on the I heart tune in. And there's however you listen to radio stations online. mean, it's basically just all Wi-Fi now. Skyler McCarthy (43:10.104) your car. Skyler McCarthy (43:30.692) Yeah, true. Ryan Rayle (43:30.867) So, but yeah, that's every Sunday, hour block. And I forget where yours was buried in there somewhere. But either way, all the unsigned artists, signed artists, people are like, play Pantura. I'm like, nope, not yet. We're going to keep going through the people that are still currently trying to make money. Or at least get a contract or something. Skyler McCarthy (43:47.098) Nope. Skyler McCarthy (43:52.868) Hahaha! Yeah. Ryan Rayle (43:58.766) But anyway, do you have anybody that you want to shout out or think before we get out of here? Skyler McCarthy (44:03.14) Well, first I want to thank you for having the show and having the music on there. I appreciate that. I am the worst marketer in the world, having somebody do some of the heavy lifting is great. Shout out to, of course, Silence Becoming and the bands we're going to play with. KLTR, they're great guys. Release the captive, they're great guys. Super excited for that show. Everybody come on down to Ragnar's May 30th. See a killer show. That way you can say I sold some tickets this time. If you saw me on the radio, I sold you a ticket. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (44:05.577) of course, We all are. We all are. Ryan Rayle (44:30.177) Yeah. Yeah. Exactly, Skyler McCarthy (44:33.2) But now that's about it. Thank you so much for your time. This has been great. Ryan Rayle (44:36.715) Yeah, dude, we're trying to I really want to get down to San Marcos and more because of Ricky from hatewaker. He's trying to put together not trying. He has he has successfully put together the seven eight six six six kind of brand. That's that's legitimately the zip code down there is seven eight six. I think hate hate city mosh or hate city mafia or something crazy. Skyler McCarthy (44:44.964) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (44:56.89) Yep. Skyler McCarthy (45:03.94) Yeah, I don't remember the name right now. Ryan Rayle (45:05.517) But he's trying to, basically we're trying to do more shit in San Marcos, right? It's a smaller growing thriving town. You got the college down there. Their downtown is not really a downtown. It's more like a like a square, you know, kind of like Georgetown or a round rock kind of vibe. It's not really a, you know, it's not an Austin, you know, fuck, it's not even a. Skyler McCarthy (45:21.231) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (45:30.541) It's not even a fucking cedar part. Anyway, we're trying to grow down there. So the fact that you guys are going down, that's pretty cool. Definitely. Skyler McCarthy (45:35.621) Yeah. And he, does he run the Central Texas Metal Fest? We played that last year. Yeah, okay, okay. That's what I thought. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (45:41.677) Bingo. you go. That's Central Texas Metal Fest. And he has it. I think he did it at the porch. He also did Frights and Screams. Frights and Screams. It's an October Halloween kind of two day festival. Fright night. Fright Screams something. Ricky, I'm sorry, dude. I'm fucking up all of your promotional stuff. I got like, like 62 % of that was true. Skyler McCarthy (45:49.487) Yep. Skyler McCarthy (46:04.848) We got some of it in there, we had some correct information for sure. Ryan Rayle (46:11.532) But anyway, what is last but not least, what are the social medias that where people can follow you and support you? Skyler McCarthy (46:21.454) Yeah, so 719 on, it's just mainly on Instagram, 719 underscore TX. Let me double check that actually. You know what, I say that out loud. Ryan Rayle (46:32.992) This is the best part. And the only thing that I would request anyone do artist wise is in your profiles, right? Just let, just let people know where you're from. Just city and state, right? Just, or just a state, right? I'll take states. You know, I'll take a state. Not saying yours doesn't have it. I'm just, I just remembered that anytime somebody mentions an online profile, I just feel like it's very important to put like where you're from. Skyler McCarthy (46:45.518) Yeah. Skyler McCarthy (46:51.13) Yeah, yeah. Ryan Rayle (47:00.172) Just so that way people know like shit I can't go see them because there's a lot of bands that I'll listen to that I'm like whoo Listen to that fucking riff or whatever like I'd love to see them live and they're in New Hampshire Skyler McCarthy (47:13.442) Yeah, and I did get it wrong. It's 719 underscore metal. So that's what it is on Instagram. That's where I mainly am. then silence becoming is silence becoming official on TikTok and Instagram. Yeah. Ryan Rayle (47:18.037) 719 underscore metal. Got it. Ryan Rayle (47:26.614) Gotcha. man, you got any merch stores or anything where people can buy shit yet? Skyler McCarthy (47:32.302) Silence Becoming does, 719 does not. Yeah, so Silence Becoming just put out a new shirt design recently, I think it's really sick. Yeah, it's a long sleeve. Yeah, that one's really dope. Buy that one. It still supports 719. Ryan Rayle (47:34.613) Okay. Ryan Rayle (47:39.651) nice. Cool. Ryan Rayle (47:44.374) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (47:48.014) I mean, yeah, seriously, that's yeah, you buy you buy one piece of gear. You've, you know, supported two different projects. That's the that is I'll finish on that. That was the that was one of the very first pieces of advice that I got when I started the podcast was we would go to shows and the step one, you know, go to the show. Step two was buy the merch. That was it. That was like that was the that was the crash course in supporting local bands was how do I support? And they were just buy the merch. But that's that's where the biggest profit margins are. Skyler McCarthy (47:53.552) Exactly. Skyler McCarthy (48:05.829) Yeah. Ryan Rayle (48:17.665) right?
