- 0:29Good morning from from the chicken coop, with the girls and
- 0:33I they're all just kind of chilled out.
- 0:34It's a little chilly here this morning and we are talking about
- 0:39a marshmallow experiment today, it's kind of funny.
- 0:42We're going to talk about this, however, has something to do
- 0:45with more than marshmallows. Okay, so back in the 60s, there
- 0:50was an experiment that was done. That talked about marshmallows
- 0:56and delayed gratification, so let me give you kind of the
- 0:59rundown on this. When you have to delay, your
- 1:04instant gratification, it's hard.
- 1:06We are so instantly built for it now, especially with Amazon and
- 1:11all the things that go on in our world, we don't understand
- 1:14anymore, what it means to delay and save for something.
- 1:17My parents wouldn't buy anything, unless they saved for
- 1:19it and that sometimes took a long time.
- 1:21So we always had to wait until something would come up until my
- 1:24father said, okay, we've got enough money, put aside for that
- 1:27but now he'll we can't even wait for delivery.
- 1:30We want drones to deliver it to us.
- 1:32So we don't have a scope anymore of what it means to wait and be
- 1:37patient for things. But the reason this is important
- 1:40is that it is a skill and it actually builds up other skills
- 1:46in you when you can do this. And it actually allows you to be
- 1:49more excited, more gratified when you actually accomplished
- 1:54something. So if you work hard for it and
- 1:56you have to delay it over time, it is a massive bonus.
- 2:00The outcomes are Clickable to what it does for the brain and
- 2:04emotional well-being. So, let me tell you about this
- 2:07little experiment. So, this psychologist, Walter
- 2:12Miss Kau first, organized it back in the 60s, and he was
- 2:17really trying to just trying to Benchmark.
- 2:21Can people like, take the delays of gratification?
- 2:25So it was simple. He would give a participant.
- 2:29He started this whole thing off with children and he would say
- 2:32Say here's one. Marshmallow if you can wait for
- 2:35whatever extended period of time, it was we will give you a
- 2:38bonus of an extra marshmallow. So you could have two if you can
- 2:41wait the amount of time or one if you can't wait.
- 2:45So here's what's really interesting.
- 2:47It was and it was like a 15-minute delay and he let the
- 2:50take the time to ruminate on the decisions to go through the
- 2:53process of it all. And what came about was that the
- 2:59people who actually waited even then, They were children.
- 3:02The people who actually waited turned out to be much better
- 3:08moving forward throughout their adult lives because he ended up
- 3:11following them for a course of. I think it was like 30 to 40
- 3:14years and over time. Because you know these Stanford
- 3:17studies or Harvard studies or any of these Elite university
- 3:21studies, they will take the time to figure out what they're
- 3:24looking for. They track all of their
- 3:26successes and failures in life. They go through the whole thing
- 3:29and when it turns out they were actually Ali higher scores, sat
- 3:35lower substance abuse. They were healthier in general
- 3:38overall physically, they had hired sheave mints in their
- 3:42lives than those who didn't and relatively made more money.
- 3:46So wow, we sit there and we go. Holy cow.
- 3:48Can this really be true? Is this something that's really
- 3:50accurate but it is and it's not because you when you think about
- 3:56it they was succeeded more across the board then one could
- 4:00ever imagine. So The the gist of this, the
- 4:05gist of this is allowing yourself to have the space in
- 4:09your mind to say I'm going to delay myself.
- 4:12I'm not going to get this immediately.
- 4:14So I often have to do this with myself because I am so driven
- 4:18from my past world of where I have spent.
- 4:22My time working for Tony Robbins.
- 4:24All these people who are just very like high-level on point, I
- 4:29was raised in that to be like okay, do it.
- 4:32It do it. Now, make a massive decision,
- 4:33Massive Action, and that's great.
- 4:36And it really does work. But the problem is, there's also
- 4:38a bonus in a greater bonus in actually being contemplative and
- 4:45waiting and putting a pause button on and saying, okay, I've
- 4:48got a plan to delay this gratification because in the
- 4:51delay, there are other things that come about and that part of
- 4:55yourself falls into a high level of leadership.
- 4:59So, I'm going to encourage you to what For you're working on
- 5:03right now, say to yourself. Okay, I don't need this right.
- 5:06This minute, I can wait, I can wait a week even if it's
- 5:09something like, you know, I just did this with myself the other
- 5:12day, because I'm sure I always try to plan, what I'm going to
- 5:13talk to you about, unless something really shows up
- 5:15immediately. So I've been planning to talk
- 5:18about this one a couple weeks ago and there was something that
- 5:20I wanted on Amazon. It was a short that have had a
- 5:24elves on it for Christmas. So I said, oh, that's really
- 5:28cute. I'm going to order it right now
- 5:29and then I put it in my car and I said, huh?
- 5:31No. I'm not going to get it right
- 5:32now because I'm going to practice this gratification
- 5:34thing. And then I waited and I said,
- 5:37okay, I'm going to go back because it's something simple
- 5:39because I didn't have to work for it to buy it.
- 5:41It was like 22 bucks, it wasn't like, it was a big deal.
- 5:43It wasn't like I had to say for it, but what happened over that
- 5:46course of time. Was that I realized?
- 5:48I didn't really want that one. I wanted a different one and I
- 5:52didn't have to struggle with the disappointment piece.
- 5:56Because they just waited. So, today's lesson is all about
- 6:01marshmallows and pausing, and not doing the instant
- 6:04gratification thing, and giving yourself that to know you're
- 6:07building your brain, literally building your brain to be better
- 6:11in the long run. All right, my friends.
- 6:13I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you tomorrow.
- 6:15Bye.
