- 0:01SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Five Good Minutes.
- 0:03SPEAKER_01: You're listening to today's inspirational message on the book of Genesis with Jake Williams.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: Genesis 39 begins with Joseph in Egypt, sold into slavery by his own brothers.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: If you stopped reading at the end of Genesis 37, you might assume Joseph's story had gone really wrong.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: He'd been the favored son, the dreamer, the boy who believed God had a purpose for his life.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Now he is property in a foreign land.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: And yet verse 2 says something really astonishing.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: The Lord was with Joseph, it says.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: And that sentence becomes the key to the entire chapter.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: God's presence doesn't mean Joseph avoids suffering.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: It means suffering can't cancel God's purposes.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: Joseph is a slave, but he's not abandoned by God.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: He's far from home, but he's not far from God.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Potifar, an Egyptian official, notices that the Lord gave him success in everything he did.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Joseph works faithfully, and eventually Potifar entrusts his entire household to Joseph.
- 1:13SPEAKER_00: The blessing becomes so obvious that even this pagan Egyptian can see something unusual is happening.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: There is an important lesson here about vocation.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Joseph doesn't say, This job is beneath me.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: I had dreams about ruling.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I was not meant to be managed by somebody else's household.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: No, he serves faithfully where God has placed him.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: And that's difficult for us because we often connect faithfulness with significance.
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: We imagine that if God has a purpose for our lives, then the work should feel important, visible, and maybe even fulfilling.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: But Joseph shows us that God often forms people through ordinary faithfulness long before he gives them extraordinary responsibility.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: The question isn't first, is this the life I wanted?
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: The question is, can I honor God here where he's placed me?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Some seasons of life feel like Egypt for us.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: You're doing work you didn't expect.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: You may be carrying responsibilities that you didn't choose, or even living through circumstances that bear little resemblance to the plans that you had for your own life.
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: It's easy to think, when I get out of this season, then I can really serve God.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: But Joseph refuses that mentality.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: He doesn't wait for the ideal circumstances to become faithful to God.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: But notice something deeper.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Joseph's success isn't finally attributed to Joseph.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: Again and again, the text says that the Lord is with him and the Lord gives success.
- 2:46SPEAKER_00: Joseph works, but God blesses.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Human responsibility and divine sovereignty aren't enemies here.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Joseph labors diligently because God is with him.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And this protects us from two errors.
- 3:00SPEAKER_00: And the first error is passivity.
- 3:02SPEAKER_00: If God is sovereign, meaning if he's in control of all things, it doesn't matter what I do, some might think.
- 3:09SPEAKER_00: And the other is pride.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Someone might say, Everything I have, everything I have accomplished, proves how capable that I am.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: But Joseph's life says, Work hard and give glory to God.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: And by verse six, Potiphar trusts Joseph so completely that he concerns himself only with the food he eats, the text says.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: Joseph has gone from slave to overseer, yet he's still a slave.
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: His circumstances have improved, but his deepest hope can't rest in circumstances.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: And that points us beyond Joseph.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: Joseph is a preview of a greater suffering servant.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Jesus also left his father's house and entered the world of humiliation.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: He took the form of a servant.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: He was faithful in obscurity, faithful under pressure, faithful even when obedience led downward rather than upward.
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: But unlike Joseph, Jesus did not merely experience the presence of God in suffering.
- 4:16SPEAKER_00: At the cross he entered the abandonment our sin deserved.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: He cried out, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: He was forsaken, so that everyone who belongs to him can know that no prison, no workplace, no disappointment, no unwanted season can separate us from God.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So wherever God has placed you, be faithful there.
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: You may not understand the assignment, you may not see how it fits the dream.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: You may feel overlooked or delayed.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: But if you're in Christ, you are never abandoned.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: The Lord is with you.
