- 0:17Speaker 1: dot Com Radio.
- 0:19Speaker 2: We are all back together again here at Jillette Stadium,
- 0:22Speaker 2: and this time for our Draft podcast review. We're going
- 0:25Speaker 2: to actually recap the entire process. We've given you in
- 0:30Speaker 2: depth looks at every position, and we've talked about a
- 0:33Speaker 2: lot of different players. But what I thought we could
- 0:36Speaker 2: do here to sort of summarize and give everybody if
- 0:39Speaker 2: you if you're only gonna listen to one podcast and
- 0:41Speaker 2: you want to get all the information, this would be
- 0:44Speaker 2: the one to download. Right, you know, this is this
- 0:46Speaker 2: this is your one stop shop. And I guess I'll
- 0:49Speaker 2: start it off. I have Mike you So, Evan Lazar
- 0:51Speaker 2: and Matis Bauman. Uh So, I want to get your
- 0:54Speaker 2: your thoughts first and foremost on what you think the
- 0:58Speaker 2: Patriots big needs are hit position wise heading into this draft.
- 1:03Speaker 2: And let's go around. Mike.
- 1:04Speaker 3: You started off, Yeah, I'll start with offensive tackle. I mean,
- 1:06Speaker 3: I think that's nobody loves it. It's not sexy. But
- 1:09Speaker 3: I think if they took an offensive tackle at fourteen,
- 1:11Speaker 3: we'd all be like, yeah, all right, we get it.
- 1:14Speaker 3: It's not the sexiest need, and it's probably not the
- 1:17Speaker 3: one that's going to immediately change the offense like people want.
- 1:19Speaker 4: But it's the kind of selection good teams make. So
- 1:22Speaker 4: we'll see.
- 1:23Speaker 3: I guess we'll eat our vegetables if we get to
- 1:24Speaker 3: that point. But I think tackles definitely a need long term, especially.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Evan you agree at this point.
- 1:29Speaker 5: I honestly don't really care too much about the position
- 1:32Speaker 5: as long as it's a premium position. Tackle, receiver, corner,
- 1:37Speaker 5: edge rusher. Let's not go anymore any more. Running backs,
- 1:41Speaker 5: no guards, right, none, safety.
- 1:43Speaker 2: None of that.
- 1:43Speaker 5: But when I look at the landscape now, especially with
- 1:46Speaker 5: Aaron Rodgers going to the Jets officially, and if you're
- 1:51Speaker 5: the Patriots, you just need to stack talent together on
- 1:53Speaker 5: this roster, I think getting too caught up in need
- 1:57Speaker 5: and too caught up and filling holes on your depth
- 2:00Speaker 5: chart and things like that, we're we might not be
- 2:03Speaker 5: there yet with this.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Don't get ahead of yourself. I have to don't ruin
- 2:06Speaker 2: all my questions all of one, but I wanted to
- 2:09Speaker 2: know what you thought the biggest positional need was not
- 2:11Speaker 2: necessarily what you think the pasots are going to do
- 2:14Speaker 2: at fourteen And I agree with your premise. Yeah, I
- 2:17Speaker 2: think they have enough holes that they don't have to
- 2:19Speaker 2: be pigeonholed into one position. But I would agree with Mike.
- 2:22Speaker 2: That's my view as tackle is probably the biggest. You
- 2:26Speaker 2: can make an argument for the other spots that Evan's
- 2:28Speaker 2: at cornerback and you know, edge wide receiver. I mean,
- 2:31Speaker 2: I think you can make an argument for a lot
- 2:33Speaker 2: of different spots, but you know, tease where you fall.
- 2:35Speaker 6: I'll give the people what they want. I want a
- 2:36Speaker 6: cornerback or a wide receiver. Yeah, the two, that's it.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Another one who can't follow directions, that is what I want.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I ask a simple question, Mike Circle gets a square.
- 2:47Speaker 2: You're don't want to answer the question. But what I do.
- 2:49Speaker 2: I do agree with you guys, and I do tackle
- 2:53Speaker 2: like I understand you know, and no one more so
- 2:55Speaker 2: than me is going to sit there and say I
- 2:59Speaker 2: you know, I got to right like an analysis piece
- 3:01Speaker 2: on a tackle like yeah, you know whatever. But at
- 3:06Speaker 2: the same time, you have Trent Brown, who is unreliable
- 3:09Speaker 2: to start with, but also entering the final year of
- 3:12Speaker 2: his deal. You picked up a couple of guys, one
- 3:15Speaker 2: at the end of his career, one who you think,
- 3:17Speaker 2: in Calvin Anderson, might be able to turn into something potentially,
- 3:21Speaker 2: but you really don't have a set starter at the
- 3:24Speaker 2: right tackle position. So I do think it's probably time
- 3:28Speaker 2: that you addressed that and add some depth there, but
- 3:31Speaker 2: not necessarily saying you have to do it at fourteen.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So let's go where everyone was going, guys, and sort
- 3:37Speaker 2: of talk about how we think this board might unfold.
- 3:40Speaker 2: And I do think in terms of tackle, there was
- 3:44Speaker 2: a minor element of that Aaron Rodgers deal that could
- 3:47Speaker 2: benefit the Patriots, and that I think the Jets were
- 3:51Speaker 2: a tackle team. They were in need of a tackle
- 3:53Speaker 2: and now I don't know if they would have taken one.
- 3:55Speaker 2: You know, we've seen mock drafts with guys all over
- 3:57Speaker 2: the place, but I do think the Jets were a
- 3:59Speaker 2: team that if a Broderick Jones or Paris Johnson or
- 4:03Speaker 2: Scarronsky one of those guys, they would have probably thought
- 4:05Speaker 2: long and hard. Based on what I've seen a little
- 4:09Speaker 2: bit with Green Bay, it looks like they're not necessarily
- 4:12Speaker 2: looking for a tackle, maybe one of the wide receivers,
- 4:15Speaker 2: so that could benefit the Patriots if they want to do,
- 4:17Speaker 2: you know, that offensive line road.
- 4:19Speaker 3: At the very least, I just like not having the
- 4:21Speaker 3: Jets pick right before the Patriots, because then it's something
- 4:23Speaker 3: that you know, you're always going to have to be
- 4:24Speaker 3: have it right in your face. But I think at
- 4:26Speaker 3: that point it's it's probably if I had to put
- 4:29Speaker 3: money down on like a roulette board, I would put
- 4:31Speaker 3: it on tackle, cornerback, and edge for that fourteenth overall pick,
- 4:35Speaker 3: with edge being a little bit of the dark horse
- 4:36Speaker 3: to see maybe somebody falls. I know they've been kicking
- 4:39Speaker 3: the tires on all those guys, but I think those
- 4:41Speaker 3: are the positions that make sense, and there's a select few.
- 4:43Speaker 3: There's maybe what like five guys that you feel like
- 4:45Speaker 3: are worth it at fourteen that kind of fill it,
- 4:47Speaker 3: and otherwise then I feel like we get into the
- 4:49Speaker 3: twenty to forty range that like, there's a lot of
- 4:51Speaker 3: good guys in there that I think, could you know,
- 4:53Speaker 3: fill some of those needs that they have.
- 4:54Speaker 2: And I want to ask you something a little bit
- 4:56Speaker 2: more pointed with regard to that, just to change it
- 4:58Speaker 2: up a little bit from Mike's answer is the notion
- 5:02Speaker 2: that there aren't, you know, an abundance of blue chip guys.
- 5:05Speaker 2: And I think we all agree, you know, like I
- 5:07Speaker 2: don't follow this stuff as closely as the guys that
- 5:10Speaker 2: get paid to do it, but I think we all
- 5:12Speaker 2: agree that there's probably not more than say, six, eight,
- 5:16Speaker 2: ten max first round kind of bonafide guys. Absolutely, If
- 5:21Speaker 2: that's the case, do you like the idea of moving
- 5:24Speaker 2: down or do you like the idea of ensuring that
- 5:27Speaker 2: you get one of the better players.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Well, I just think that that's why I'm not I'm
- 5:31Speaker 5: not backing myself into a corner on a position, because
- 5:36Speaker 5: if you go into the draft, where like I think
- 5:38Speaker 5: they went into the draft last year and said, we're
- 5:40Speaker 5: coming out with a guard either either way, whatever way
- 5:43Speaker 5: it goes, we're coming out with the guard. I think
- 5:46Speaker 5: if you do that at tackle, which would probably be
- 5:49Speaker 5: the most realistic position to do that at as well,
- 5:51Speaker 5: then you might get into a spot where you have
- 5:54Speaker 5: a B plus pick, right like, you have a plus
- 5:58Speaker 5: starter like a Darnell Wright or at Anton Harrison or
- 6:01Speaker 5: somebody along those lines who's gonna be a good player
- 6:04Speaker 5: for you. But I think the Patriots got enough good players, right,
- 6:07Speaker 5: They need players that are elite players. And that's why
- 6:11Speaker 5: I don't necessarily look at this board the way that
- 6:14Speaker 5: it's shaping up right now and say that you absolutely
- 6:17Speaker 5: need to take this position at this spot. And your
- 6:21Speaker 5: point about the Blue Chippers is a good one. Where
- 6:23Speaker 5: if you're sitting there at fourteen, and let's see my
- 6:27Speaker 5: mock draft this morning, Tyree Wilson starts to slide a
- 6:30Speaker 5: little bit because I think if he doesn't go to
- 6:31Speaker 5: Houston at two, I can't really find a great place
- 6:34Speaker 5: to put him in the top ten if it's not
- 6:36Speaker 5: to the Texans. The Seahawks are always a little bit
- 6:39Speaker 5: of a wild card team. To their board is kind
- 6:41Speaker 5: of like the Patriots. It beats to its own drums.
- 6:43Speaker 5: So you never really know what Seattle is thinking either.
- 6:46Speaker 5: But you start to think about some of the players that, Okay,
- 6:49Speaker 5: who's the most realistic guys that might slide into the
- 6:53Speaker 5: early part of the teams, right, And I think Tyree
- 6:57Speaker 5: Wilson's one of them. I think Christian Gonzales is one
- 7:00Speaker 5: of them. It really seems like Devin Witherspoon is gonna
- 7:02Speaker 5: be the top corner in this draft. If you're the
- 7:05Speaker 5: Patriots and you're sitting there at fourteen, and it's not
- 7:08Speaker 5: trading up for a quarterback, so you're not giving up
- 7:10Speaker 5: a king's ransom to trade up, trading up to eleven
- 7:14Speaker 5: to leap frog a team like Houston that might have
- 7:16Speaker 5: some similar players on their board as you, and maybe
- 7:20Speaker 5: to leap frog a team like Green Bay that typically
- 7:22Speaker 5: doesn't draft receivers in the first round, so maybe they're
- 7:25Speaker 5: looking at an edge position or something like that too.
- 7:29Speaker 5: I don't hate it like I think that that's something
- 7:31Speaker 5: that you realistically have to come away with because again,
- 7:34Speaker 5: if you trade it back into the twenties, I'm confident
- 7:36Speaker 5: that you're gonna get a solid, maybe above average to
- 7:40Speaker 5: plus starter. But how many above average starters does one
- 7:44Speaker 5: team need? You know, you need some guys that are
- 7:46Speaker 5: gonna be bus drivers, not guys that are sitting in
- 7:49Speaker 5: the back right. So I think at some point you
- 7:52Speaker 5: have to think about that with this draft, that there
- 7:55Speaker 5: really isn't a ton of first round quote unquote talents.
- 7:59Speaker 5: I think a lot of teams are going to have
- 8:01Speaker 5: fewer than fifteen of those in this draft, So.
- 8:03Speaker 2: Tis I'll switch it up a little bit to you
- 8:05Speaker 2: like I did with with Evan, and I'll ask you
- 8:08Speaker 2: if you could, like I understand the way the mock
- 8:10Speaker 2: drafts are unfolding, right, you don't know exactly, but if
- 8:13Speaker 2: you had a dream scenario that someone's available at fourteen
- 8:18Speaker 2: to it.
- 8:19Speaker 6: I'm taking Christian. I mean, ideally you don't need to
- 8:22Speaker 6: trade up to get him.
- 8:23Speaker 2: But I think you guys might want to watch All
- 8:24Speaker 2: Access tonight.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Actually I was leaning towards wide receiver, which also I
- 8:32Speaker 6: think it's hilarious Rogers left and there's a good chance
- 8:34Speaker 6: the Packers are finally gonna take a receiver in the
- 8:35Speaker 6: first round.
- 8:36Speaker 2: I saw that on Twitter yesterday about JSN, and I
- 8:39Speaker 2: did laugh to myself. I agree with Evan, that's sort
- 8:42Speaker 2: of an out of character move for the Packers, but
- 8:44Speaker 2: I did absolutely chuckle to myself, Like.
- 8:49Speaker 5: To be fair, they took Christian Watson went thirty fourth overalls.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Yeah, but no, so Gonzales would be I think someone
- 8:56Speaker 2: that that, uh, that's one of those dream scenario that
- 9:00Speaker 2: might not necessarily have to be like strictly like your
- 9:04Speaker 2: head's in the clouds. I think there's a there's a
- 9:06Speaker 2: scenario that you can walk yourself through. You know, I
- 9:11Speaker 2: was away for a week, missed a lot of stuff.
- 9:13Speaker 2: Evidently Hendon Hooker is now in the first round, right right? Yeah?
- 9:17Speaker 2: I mean is that wrong?
- 9:18Speaker 5: Back into the first Yeah?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Okay, So what happens if someone says, you know what,
- 9:23Speaker 2: I want to make sure I get him, and they
- 9:25Speaker 2: move up ahead of fourteen yeah, to get Hendon Hooker?
- 9:28Speaker 5: Well, I look at Tennessee, not just because he went
- 9:30Speaker 5: to Tennessee, but a team that I don't know how
- 9:33Speaker 5: you can be sold on that quarterback.
- 9:35Speaker 2: Room right now.
- 9:35Speaker 5: And if he's the there's other four quarterbacks go ahead
- 9:39Speaker 5: of them, and they can't trade up into the top
- 9:41Speaker 5: ten to get their guy, then maybe it.
- 9:43Speaker 2: Seems like a be set year in Tennessee. Anyway, So
- 9:46Speaker 2: what's the deal if you have your first round pick
- 9:49Speaker 2: and you can't play for half the year? Yeah?
- 9:51Speaker 5: I mean you look at the four quarterbacks the Falcons.
- 9:54Speaker 5: It just blows my mind that Atlanta, if there is
- 9:58Speaker 5: a quarterback on the board and that those top four
- 10:01Speaker 5: guys that the Falcons are gonna say, you know what,
- 10:03Speaker 5: we got Desmond Ridder, We're all set at quarterback. Like,
- 10:06Speaker 5: I feel like that has to be a spot where
- 10:09Speaker 5: they might just be sitting there and C. J. Stroud
- 10:12Speaker 5: might just fall in their laps. And I just don't
- 10:14Speaker 5: know how as that front office you just say no,
- 10:17Speaker 5: we're good, like we have what ritter.
- 10:19Speaker 6: You gotta wonder if some of these teams are just
- 10:21Speaker 6: waiting for next year's quarterback class.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Two.
- 10:23Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean you got who Caleb Williams and then
- 10:25Speaker 6: that kid.
- 10:25Speaker 2: For that's it.
- 10:27Speaker 5: I always think that's that's very dicey.
- 10:29Speaker 2: I agree. I mean, it's we've seen it happen so
- 10:32Speaker 2: many times that the guy you identified the year before
- 10:35Speaker 2: it turns out to be somewhat disappointing. Now, these guys,
- 10:38Speaker 2: you know, Young and Stroud weren't disappointing. They were the
- 10:41Speaker 2: guys going into the season. They were the guys coming
- 10:43Speaker 2: out of the season. But I think we've seen it.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You know, I think Sam Darnold was somewhat disappointing this
- 10:48Speaker 2: last year at USC. Yeah, you know, it didn't really
- 10:51Speaker 2: hurt his dress hockey. I think he still went third overall.
- 10:54Speaker 2: But I think sometimes I agree with Evan that that
- 10:57Speaker 2: that can be dicey. But I do think if you
- 11:00Speaker 2: get like four quarterbacks and then possibly a fifth and
- 11:05Speaker 2: now the Green Bay thing to me throws a you know,
- 11:08Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe they were interested in one of
- 11:10Speaker 2: the guys that you're interested, but I think that's a
- 11:11Speaker 2: different team ahead of you. Now you never know how
- 11:14Speaker 2: these are gonna unfold. And then you know the kid
- 11:16Speaker 2: from Georgia, Jailen cut where does he go? Right? Right?
- 11:19Speaker 2: He's gonna take that? Does he? You know you mentioned
- 11:21Speaker 2: Seattle earlier, I could see that being a pick for I.
- 11:24Speaker 5: Think Seattle and Philly are the two teams in the
- 11:27Speaker 5: top ten that I see really strong front offices, good programs.
- 11:32Speaker 5: You can't if you're a team like the Raiders, for instance,
- 11:36Speaker 5: you can't take a chance on Jalen Carter because your
- 11:38Speaker 5: job is on the line.
- 11:39Speaker 2: They've got many of those first rounders right in high
- 11:43Speaker 2: draft picks in recent years. They can't afford another one.
- 11:45Speaker 5: So you have to have a stable organization in the
- 11:47Speaker 5: front office that feels confident in their job security. I
- 11:51Speaker 5: think to take a guy like Jalen Carter, but I
- 11:52Speaker 5: still think he goes in the top ten. And you
- 11:54Speaker 5: look at the locks in the top ten, I think
- 11:56Speaker 5: the four quarterbacks are locked in the top ten some
- 11:59Speaker 5: way or another. Whether teams trade up into the top ten,
- 12:02Speaker 5: or they all go to teams that are already there.
- 12:04Speaker 5: Jalen Carter, Will Anderson, and then I think Devin Witherspoon
- 12:07Speaker 5: has basically cemented himself as a top ten pick. So
- 12:10Speaker 5: that's seven guys and the other three spots, like I
- 12:13Speaker 5: said earlier, is a complete wild card.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I have a few more questions they're gonna ask. I
- 12:18Speaker 2: want to get all three of your thoughts, but I'll
- 12:21Speaker 2: start off with a very simple one. Who is the
- 12:25Speaker 2: best player in this class?
- 12:27Speaker 3: Jalen Carter right, I don't know. I mean, I guess
- 12:30Speaker 3: we'll have to see. On the quarterbacks, I mean, you know,
- 12:32Speaker 3: some size issues. There's a lot to like about Bryce Young, though.
- 12:34Speaker 3: Is it going to translate. I don't think it's crazy
- 12:37Speaker 3: to say that it will, but I mean I would
- 12:39Speaker 3: I would probably go with one of the defensive linemen.
- 12:41Speaker 3: Between Jalen Carter, Will Anderson, those two guys, I think,
- 12:44Speaker 3: you know, just an instant impact. They land in the
- 12:47Speaker 3: right place, especially when you talk about going to Philadelphia,
- 12:50Speaker 3: I mean plugging that player into that front, I mean,
- 12:53Speaker 3: you know where he doesn't even I mean they've had
- 12:55Speaker 3: Fletcher Cox there forever. Now you add another kind of disruptive,
- 12:59Speaker 3: just problem play. I think those those guys especially, I mean,
- 13:02Speaker 3: you say, you talk about Carter with the issues that
- 13:04Speaker 3: he's had, it might end up better for him. He's
- 13:06Speaker 3: gonna end up on a better team now instead of
- 13:08Speaker 3: going in the top three, you know, if he goes
- 13:10Speaker 3: six to seven somewhere in there, Uh, he's gonna go
- 13:12Speaker 3: into a great situation and really have a chance to flourish.
- 13:14Speaker 2: I'd probably go with those guys.
- 13:16Speaker 5: Jon Robinson, Yeah, that'd be my pick.
- 13:18Speaker 6: I think it's Will Anderson or b Jon Robinson. The
- 13:20Speaker 6: only reason it wouldn't be is I think it's stupid
- 13:22Speaker 6: to take a running back in the first round.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not necessarily saying who I would want to take.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I'm saying, who do you think is the best player
- 13:27Speaker 2: in the draft? I think you can make a strong
- 13:29Speaker 2: argument for Robinson. I was waiting for Matist to come
- 13:32Speaker 2: up with like a Division two quarter, you know, who
- 13:35Speaker 2: has all the medical.
- 13:37Speaker 5: Nick Saldevari all dominion.
- 13:40Speaker 2: So you know, I like to sort of look at
- 13:43Speaker 2: it that way sometimes and then it's it's amazing, like
- 13:47Speaker 2: how wildly you can miss on some of those guys, Like, oh,
- 13:50Speaker 2: I think so and so is gonna be the best
- 13:51Speaker 2: player in the class, and so and so is out
- 13:53Speaker 2: of the league in three years.
- 13:54Speaker 5: Like, I agree with Mike that it is probably Jalen Carter.
- 13:57Speaker 5: I was just giving a different name that wasn't Jalen Carter.
- 14:00Speaker 5: But I think the one concern that you have with
- 14:02Speaker 5: Gillen Carter is the motor. He doesn't always play at
- 14:05Speaker 5: full tilt, but when he does play at full tilty,
- 14:07Speaker 5: is the most unstoppable thing in the draft.
- 14:09Speaker 2: Okay, I'm gonna give you this. Just one will give
- 14:13Speaker 2: you a lot of options. But if there's one guy,
- 14:16Speaker 2: and this is two different ways, I'm going to ask this.
- 14:18Speaker 2: I'm going to ask you first one guy that you
- 14:21Speaker 2: think really strongly will end the weekend as a Patriots draft.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Pick one guy to identify? Who would it be?
- 14:28Speaker 4: Mike the whole and the whole weekend? Who this is
- 14:31Speaker 4: a all right?
- 14:33Speaker 2: Moving on, we'll go to Evan and what Mike Finck
- 14:35Speaker 2: in the whole weekend? Any like, just one guy that
- 14:38Speaker 2: you saw like the Patriots are going to draft, I'll
- 14:40Speaker 2: do one. You want me to do one?
- 14:41Speaker 4: Yeah, go ahead, I'll say Tyler Steam.
- 14:43Speaker 3: I was gonna say Tyler you know, just a date.
- 14:48Speaker 3: It's my guy, that's my guy. You know, there's there's
- 14:51Speaker 3: there's quite a few. I mean it could maybe say
- 14:53Speaker 3: Charlie Jones. This is you know kind of that that
- 14:55Speaker 3: day two Jones Patriot. You know that that slot receiver.
- 14:58Speaker 5: But he doesn't he have Patriots should take this guy,
- 15:01Speaker 5: but don't like you know, like he's too fast, like
- 15:05Speaker 5: like Hunter Renfro style right like where it's just is
- 15:08Speaker 5: like this is a slam dunk Patriot and then he
- 15:11Speaker 5: doesn't end up being.
- 15:12Speaker 2: Maybe one of the punters too. I throw in there
- 15:14Speaker 2: is like just potential like one of those.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Like I just I feel like they're definitely gonna take
- 15:18Speaker 4: a punter this year. That that seems just you know,
- 15:20Speaker 4: fifth round.
- 15:21Speaker 5: Yeah, if you have to lock something in, I think
- 15:24Speaker 5: Michael Turk, the punter from Oklahoma is as much as
- 15:28Speaker 5: when it comes to the draft, we can't lock anything in.
- 15:31Speaker 5: But you have a need a punter. You know that
- 15:34Speaker 5: Bill's gonna care about that. And you also have a
- 15:37Speaker 5: guy that you spent an entire week with working at
- 15:40Speaker 5: the Shrine Bowl and was impressive in Vegas at the
- 15:43Speaker 5: Shrine Bowl with the Patriots. I don't know, I mean,
- 15:46Speaker 5: I don't know how you don't come away from the
- 15:48Speaker 5: draft and needing a punter, but you don't take the
- 15:51Speaker 5: punter you worked with for a week. That that doesn't
- 15:53Speaker 5: really seem to line.
- 15:56Speaker 2: I would just sign one, you know. I'm sure there's
- 15:59Speaker 2: one down the stree at the Why and Foxborow who
- 16:01Speaker 2: can do it.
- 16:01Speaker 5: But anyway he'll take they'll take them in the fifth round.
- 16:04Speaker 5: They'll trade up or something like that and get a
- 16:06Speaker 5: fifth round pick, because that's what they do.
- 16:07Speaker 2: And then he'll actually put the foot on the ball
- 16:09Speaker 2: in the first game and everybody, just.
- 16:13Speaker 5: Like Jake Bailey turned out. But Dan Bruger actually had
- 16:17Speaker 5: him as like a seventh round pick, priority free agent
- 16:19Speaker 5: and the beasts. So maybe he is somebody that they
- 16:23Speaker 5: actually wait on and take in the sixth or seventh
- 16:26Speaker 5: round instead of reaching on a punter in the fact.
- 16:28Speaker 2: To be clear, like you know, as much as my
- 16:30Speaker 2: snark comes through, like if you take him in the
- 16:32Speaker 2: seventh round just to make sure you get them, that's
- 16:34Speaker 2: nothing wrong with that. But like the whole trading up
- 16:37Speaker 2: in the fourth round or the fifth round, like I
- 16:40Speaker 2: think you can find players still in the middle of
- 16:43Speaker 2: the draft. I don't know Washington is a guy I
- 16:47Speaker 2: keep coming back to for the Patriots. I think the
- 16:50Speaker 2: position makes a lot of sense. Tight end. I think
- 16:53Speaker 2: the size and the skill set I think has to
- 16:56Speaker 2: be intriguing. I think one of those tight ends total,
- 16:59Speaker 2: But pick Washington because I don't want to be wishy.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I mean, like the Laporta, uh yeah, which it soon
- 17:06Speaker 2: make craft, you know, like all those kinds of guys
- 17:10Speaker 2: I think they may. Yeah, I think all those guys
- 17:12Speaker 2: make sense, but I want to pick one and pick Washington.
- 17:15Speaker 2: I know he's kind of been rising a little bit,
- 17:17Speaker 2: so maybe that requires some some aggressiveness.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I just think they have to hit this tight end
- 17:22Speaker 3: class given I mean what we know about them, They've
- 17:24Speaker 3: always been a huge tight end team. I mean we
- 17:26Speaker 3: can we will see what BILLYO thinks about, you know,
- 17:28Speaker 3: the tight ends and what you know, what he did
- 17:29Speaker 3: with Gronk and Hernandez, if that's something that still intrigues him.
- 17:32Speaker 3: But I'm a little bit more on just like the
- 17:34Speaker 3: guys who maybe could develop into that, like every down,
- 17:39Speaker 3: why tight end can play in line, can go out,
- 17:42Speaker 3: can make you know, stretch the seam a little bit.
- 17:44Speaker 3: That that's the guy you're looking for but I would
- 17:46Speaker 3: still say too, I know, Hunter Henry and and and
- 17:48Speaker 3: and gets SICKI you are only on one year deals.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Like I could see Hunter Henry sticking around to I
- 17:52Speaker 3: don't know, if it's like they're gonna wash it next year,
- 17:55Speaker 3: I don't know, but I mean I could just see it, like,
- 17:57Speaker 3: you know, I kind of I would.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Love to take you got enough good players, right, but
- 18:01Speaker 2: you know, but maybe he's home run.
- 18:03Speaker 3: But maybe next year he's the two you know, and
- 18:05Speaker 3: then this kid that we dropped this year develops and
- 18:07Speaker 3: you're like, all right, well, let's keep Hunter Henry around
- 18:09Speaker 3: as almost like what's his face that they had in
- 18:11Speaker 3: twenty ten, where they still kept the veteran tight end
- 18:14Speaker 3: who dropped.
- 18:14Speaker 4: The ball on the twenty against the Jets. You know,
- 18:16Speaker 4: I'm talking about a Crumpler.
- 18:18Speaker 2: You know, yeah, yeah, kind of that.
- 18:20Speaker 3: I don't think it's the Corps of Hunter Henry yet,
- 18:21Speaker 3: but I Thinkhunter Henry is gonna have a little bit
- 18:23Speaker 3: of a bount.
- 18:23Speaker 2: If you saw what Algie Crumpler had to do to
- 18:25Speaker 2: get in his chair after every game, really he would
- 18:28Speaker 2: have been a little bit more sympathetic algym that poor
- 18:31Speaker 2: guy gave he shouldn't even be on the field give
- 18:32Speaker 2: everything he had to get out there every game tea.
- 18:35Speaker 2: So I'll start with you with this next one two
- 18:38Speaker 2: part question. Do they pick a quarterback? And if so,
- 18:43Speaker 2: which one would you like to see the Patriots pick.
- 18:45Speaker 6: I don't think they pick a quarterback.
- 18:47Speaker 2: Okay, so moving on?
- 18:49Speaker 6: Yeah, No, I mean, do you obt me just spice
- 18:50Speaker 6: it up.
- 18:51Speaker 2: No, tell me why you don't think they'll take a quarter.
- 18:53Speaker 6: I think he's just like you got a ride with Mac,
- 18:55Speaker 6: like I don't know, like if it doesn't work out,
- 18:57Speaker 6: see next year's class.
- 18:58Speaker 2: But I mean, well, I'm not yeah, necessarily saying you're
- 19:01Speaker 2: gonna take Anthony Richardson at fourteen or anything.
- 19:03Speaker 6: But I mean no, I just I don't think. I
- 19:06Speaker 6: don't think the needs there. I think there are other
- 19:07Speaker 6: needs that need to be addressed and Matt can get
- 19:09Speaker 6: you through the season and hopefully he plays like he
- 19:10Speaker 6: does a rookie year.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 19:12Speaker 4: Ye, too late to turn back down.
- 19:14Speaker 5: Come on, Evan, I say yes, I think they do
- 19:17Speaker 5: take a quarterback. I still would not be totally blown
- 19:22Speaker 5: away if they take Will Levis, if he's there at fourteen.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I just developing opinion that I missed last week. Well,
- 19:28Speaker 2: he came in for the visit. I know that I
- 19:30Speaker 2: did see that, and.
- 19:33Speaker 5: I just look at his skill I think his skill
- 19:35Speaker 5: sets a little bit misunderstood. I think a lot of
- 19:37Speaker 5: people look at him and see Josh Allen or Justin Herbert.
- 19:40Speaker 5: I see a much a player that's much better in
- 19:44Speaker 5: structure than out of structure, where those two guys I
- 19:47Speaker 5: think thrive on shots down the field and in their
- 19:50Speaker 5: athletic ability and their arm talent. I think the best
- 19:54Speaker 5: part about Levis is his quick game ability, is the
- 19:56Speaker 5: quick release and the ability to get the football out.
- 19:58Speaker 5: I think he's somebody that it has a long way
- 20:00Speaker 5: to go. But I just don't know if this regime
- 20:05Speaker 5: is in on Mac anymore. I just can't convince myself
- 20:09Speaker 5: that they like the kid. It is everything that they
- 20:12Speaker 5: it's hard to everything that they've pointed to.
- 20:14Speaker 7: Now.
- 20:14Speaker 5: I think cooler heads prevail. I don't think that they
- 20:17Speaker 5: end up doing that, but I see a guy like
- 20:19Speaker 5: dtr in day three, maybe that it just makes too
- 20:24Speaker 5: much sense. At least you get somebody in here that
- 20:27Speaker 5: has a little bit more mobility and athletic upside than
- 20:30Speaker 5: the two guys you have in the room and maybe
- 20:33Speaker 5: if it doesn't work out with Mac, maybe maybe maybe
- 20:35Speaker 5: he turns into like a Jalen Hurts type developmental player.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So I picked him as my quarterback on All Access.
- 20:43Speaker 2: In the game that'll be Wednesday night, So depending on
- 20:46Speaker 2: when you're listening to this podcast, that'll be the night
- 20:48Speaker 2: before the draft. But I just felt like, if you're
- 20:53Speaker 2: going to take a developmental guy, doesn't it need to
- 20:56Speaker 2: be one of those kind of guys with a completely
- 20:59Speaker 2: different kind of skills that than what you have. Yeah,
- 21:01Speaker 2: and some.
- 21:02Speaker 4: Really intriguing traits, you know, just not the whole package yet.
- 21:05Speaker 2: But so like, do you feel he'll take a quarterback?
- 21:08Speaker 3: I do, and I would I would just stamp everything
- 21:10Speaker 3: and said, I mean we've been talking about DTR since,
- 21:12Speaker 3: you know, the beginning of this whole process, and I
- 21:15Speaker 3: mean I think that for everything you guys said, it
- 21:17Speaker 3: just makes sense to round out the room.
- 21:19Speaker 4: I'm always a fan of taking quarterbacks.
- 21:21Speaker 2: I think it's good business in general. You never know
- 21:24Speaker 2: when you're going to take one in the fourth round.
- 21:25Speaker 2: Who creates value for you.
- 21:27Speaker 3: I do would love to and this isn't the forum
- 21:30Speaker 3: for it, but I'd love to go down the wormhole
- 21:31Speaker 3: of like what does it look like if they took
- 21:33Speaker 3: will Levis? Like what you know when we get out
- 21:34Speaker 3: the camp? You know, like what's the plan? Like all
- 21:36Speaker 3: those things. I think those are fun things to speculate.
- 21:38Speaker 3: But but I'm with you guys.
- 21:39Speaker 5: If they take will Levis, I think Mac gets moved
- 21:41Speaker 5: on Friday.
- 21:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I agree.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I would have to agree. I agree, And all of
- 21:45Speaker 2: a sudden we have a very busy weekend, much busier
- 21:48Speaker 2: than we thought. I just with dtr though.
- 21:50Speaker 5: I do think that there's a lot to be said
- 21:53Speaker 5: for for how he's developed at UCLA under Chip Kelly,
- 21:57Speaker 5: who we know as a friend of Belichick and the past.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Sure that he is now compared to the passer that
- 22:02Speaker 5: he was when he got to you CLA a couple
- 22:04Speaker 5: of years ago.
- 22:04Speaker 2: Is night and day.
- 22:06Speaker 5: So I do think there's a lot of upside there.
- 22:08Speaker 5: And until you're sold on your quarterback, how do you
- 22:10Speaker 5: not keep taking quarterbacks? And no one's saying they have
- 22:12Speaker 5: to take one in the first round, But until you're
- 22:15Speaker 5: stamped and approved that you got your guy, I don't
- 22:17Speaker 5: know how you give up on that position.
- 22:19Speaker 2: All right, So I guess we'll, you know, sort of
- 22:22Speaker 2: round third here and bring this home, and I'll just
- 22:24Speaker 2: ask you the very simple uh one offs here tis
- 22:28Speaker 2: I'll start with you, who are the Patriots taken at fourteen? Well?
- 22:31Speaker 2: What do they do at fourteen? I don't want to
- 22:33Speaker 2: lead the witness trade up? Trade? What do you think
- 22:37Speaker 2: you want them to do?
- 22:37Speaker 6: Or what do I think they do?
- 22:38Speaker 2: Give me both what you want them to do and
- 22:40Speaker 2: what you think they will do.
- 22:42Speaker 6: I want them to trade up, okay, And you know,
- 22:45Speaker 6: since I've been here, they've traded back, They've stood their
- 22:49Speaker 6: ground and then traded back again. I think this is
- 22:51Speaker 6: the year they trade up. And I'm not saying they
- 22:53Speaker 6: go up to like top ten, but you know, maybe
- 22:54Speaker 6: go to number eleven and they get Christian Gunzals or
- 22:57Speaker 6: Joy Porter.
- 22:58Speaker 2: Okay, what do you think they will do?
- 23:00Speaker 6: Stay where they are?
- 23:00Speaker 2: Okay?
- 23:02Speaker 5: I think they stay where they are too, because just
- 23:04Speaker 5: off of their track record going from fourteen to twenty
- 23:09Speaker 5: six or something like that, I think that they're going
- 23:11Speaker 5: to see a pretty big talent drop off there in
- 23:15Speaker 5: those picks. But I think that it will be, unfortunately,
- 23:18Speaker 5: someone that we don't really love at the fourteenth overall pick,
- 23:23Speaker 5: maybe like a Deontay Banks or Darnell Wright. Those two
- 23:26Speaker 5: guys stand out to me as Patriot type players that
- 23:30Speaker 5: they took the corner from Maryland, Like that's like the
- 23:33Speaker 5: reach kind of element to it that maybe even take
- 23:36Speaker 5: them over Joey Porter Junior. And that's gonna get everybody
- 23:39Speaker 5: all riled up. But did you ask what I want
- 23:41Speaker 5: them to do? Or can I Can I tell you
- 23:43Speaker 5: what I want them to do? Because absolutely two part us.
- 23:47Speaker 5: At this point, I think that there's a lot to
- 23:50Speaker 5: be said for overall morale within the organization and improving
- 23:57Speaker 5: the overall just in that locker room, no pun intended.
- 24:02Speaker 5: And I think the only guy that I see in
- 24:06Speaker 5: this draft that does that is Jackson Smith and Jigba
- 24:11Speaker 5: and maybe Zay Flowers, but I think that you are
- 24:15Speaker 5: reaching for Zay Flowers a little bit at fourteen. But
- 24:17Speaker 5: I think one of those two guys is the only
- 24:19Speaker 5: one that we get out to training camp, they get
- 24:23Speaker 5: back from the off season and people they you can
- 24:26Speaker 5: start to see something here.
- 24:28Speaker 2: You can start there's some buzz.
- 24:30Speaker 5: Yeah, Bill Bryan back in the building now he has
- 24:32Speaker 5: some new toys to play with along with you know
- 24:34Speaker 5: the guys that have already been here. So what I
- 24:37Speaker 5: think they'll do is tires on a car, right, Like,
- 24:40Speaker 5: they'll take a tackle or at the corner that nobody
- 24:43Speaker 5: wants them to take. But what I hope they do
- 24:46Speaker 5: is take one of these two receivers. Really, jsn or
- 24:50Speaker 5: Zay Flowers are the only two guys that I really
- 24:51Speaker 5: feel like are our surefire would be first rounders pretty
- 24:55Speaker 5: much any year. I think once you get into the
- 24:58Speaker 5: Addison's and the Quinton Johnston's year, you're going down a
- 25:00Speaker 5: little bit. But that's where I'm at.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Mike, Yeah, I mean, I definitely agree with a lot
- 25:04Speaker 3: of what he said. I mean, I think that what
- 25:05Speaker 3: they're probably going to do is probably a tackle. I mean,
- 25:08Speaker 3: it's just you look at their history a draft. It's
- 25:10Speaker 3: defensive line, it's offensive line, it's you know, occasional linebackers,
- 25:13Speaker 3: but that's usually where they focus on. So if you're
- 25:15Speaker 3: looking at the history, it's probably that what would I
- 25:17Speaker 3: like them to do? I hear what he's saying with
- 25:19Speaker 3: wide receiver. I would be excited about one of those
- 25:20Speaker 3: cornerbacks though, And I think, you know, if it was Gonzales,
- 25:23Speaker 3: I think that that's a piece that would generate some
- 25:26Speaker 3: buzz because I think the people that really watch know that,
- 25:29Speaker 3: like that's a piece that they need.
- 25:30Speaker 4: Evan talks about you need blue chip players.
- 25:32Speaker 3: Where do you need the blue chip players the most
- 25:33Speaker 3: totally agree on wide receiver. Not quite a match, but
- 25:36Speaker 3: like if you could get Gonzales at fourteen, somebody like that,
- 25:39Speaker 3: I think is a blue chip cornerback, big need.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't have anything really different than any of
- 25:43Speaker 2: you guys. You know. I think that they will sit
- 25:46Speaker 2: tight and I think they will end up taking the tackle,
- 25:49Speaker 2: and I don't think that's a bad move. Like I
- 25:51Speaker 2: think that that's a big time need and I think
- 25:53Speaker 2: that has the probably the best chance to have a
- 25:57Speaker 2: quality player there is that position. What I want them
- 26:01Speaker 2: to do is what would Matisse said, I would want
- 26:04Speaker 2: I want them to at least be prepared to be
- 26:05Speaker 2: aggressive and move up a couple of spots if they
- 26:08Speaker 2: see Gonzales. Now, hopefully they think about Gonzales the way
- 26:12Speaker 2: the four of us evidently do. I think he is
- 26:15Speaker 2: that kind of like long, athletic guy on the outside
- 26:19Speaker 2: that you could plug in for ten years and say
- 26:21Speaker 2: I have a pretty good player out there. And I
- 26:24Speaker 2: think it's been a little bit since they had that guy.
- 26:27Speaker 2: You know, like you know when Gilmore, you know, was
- 26:29Speaker 2: here a couple of years now, you know. So I
- 26:32Speaker 2: think that that's really immeasurable. And you want to you
- 26:36Speaker 2: want to talk about this defense being the difference between
- 26:38Speaker 2: being you know, the fourth ranked defense and the fourth
- 26:40Speaker 2: best defense in football. You know, like there's a little
- 26:42Speaker 2: bit of a difference there. I think if you can
- 26:44Speaker 2: improve the athleticism in your secondary, you can go from
- 26:48Speaker 2: a team that's highly rated on defense to a team
- 26:50Speaker 2: that's very good on defense. Now, who knows if he works,
- 26:54Speaker 2: but I would like to see them be prepared to
- 26:57Speaker 2: be aggressive if someone's slipping, to go up and get
- 27:00Speaker 2: at them.
- 27:00Speaker 5: I think that's so built to think that the answer
- 27:04Speaker 5: to Aaron Rodgers coming to the division and the Bill
- 27:07Speaker 5: is to continue to build on defense. Like I just
- 27:10Speaker 5: can't imagine he's going to look at this and say, oh, well,
- 27:14Speaker 5: the best way for us to compete with Buffalo is
- 27:16Speaker 5: to outscore them. He's not gonna think that. N No,
- 27:19Speaker 5: He's gonna think edge corner. Let's build through the defense,
- 27:23Speaker 5: and let's build that side of the ball up so
- 27:25Speaker 5: we can win a game against Buffalo twenty four to
- 27:27Speaker 5: twenty one. He doesn't want to play Buffalo forty one
- 27:30Speaker 5: thirty eight. He doesn't see them having a chance, and
- 27:33Speaker 5: I can't necessarily disagree with that.
- 27:34Speaker 2: So we won't have to wait very much longer. That's
- 27:37Speaker 2: going to wrap up our draft podcast reviews here at
- 27:42Speaker 2: Jillette Stadium, and this weekend we'll get into it. So
- 27:45Speaker 2: we will be with you live when you're looking live
- 27:49Speaker 2: for the first round. We will be on for the
- 27:51Speaker 2: entirety of the first round on Thursday night, so you
- 27:53Speaker 2: want to, you know, check out and listen to everything
- 27:56Speaker 2: that Mike and Evan have to say. They've done a
- 27:58Speaker 2: tremendous amount of research on this draft, so we will
- 28:01Speaker 2: have you. We will have opinions. I'm not telling you
- 28:04Speaker 2: they're right, wrong, or indifferent, but we'll have opinions on
- 28:06Speaker 2: the players that are getting picked and on who the
- 28:08Speaker 2: Patriots select, and we'll give you some instant analysis. We
- 28:12Speaker 2: will be with you Thursday night, like I said, for
- 28:14Speaker 2: the entirety of the first round. Will be with you
- 28:16Speaker 2: Friday night. I believe from Friday seven to ten, seven
- 28:20Speaker 2: to ten, That's what I was going to guess. And
- 28:23Speaker 2: I don't know. Somebody involved in the Saturday show likes
- 28:26Speaker 2: to change the hours all the time. So tis what
- 28:29Speaker 2: are we doing Saturday? It looks like two to three,
- 28:31Speaker 2: two three, only one hour? Sure it's not two to
- 28:34Speaker 2: four sorry four two to four yeah, two to four
- 28:37Speaker 2: is what we've sort of locked into the last couple
- 28:39Speaker 2: of Saturdays. So if you want to figure out what
- 28:43Speaker 2: the Patriots are doing and what you think, how do
- 28:45Speaker 2: you think the Patriots?
- 28:46Speaker 7: Did?
- 28:47Speaker 2: You want to be with us for Patriots on Filters
- 28:49Speaker 2: for those shows. So thanks for listening.
