- 0:09Speaker 1: Oh, here he is. Where in the world is Jonathan
- 0:11Speaker 1: Papplewall Before we get into this interview, Pap, I got
- 0:15Speaker 1: to hang out with some of your ex teammates and
- 0:16Speaker 1: they had some stories that I am not we are
- 0:19Speaker 1: not allowed to tell on the air. It was Ryan Zimmerman,
- 0:21Speaker 1: Ian Desmond. Who else was there that you played with?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Uh?
- 0:26Speaker 1: Did you put you know? Will Harris know? Uh? Let
- 0:29Speaker 1: me see, I'm trying to think who else. They had
- 0:31Speaker 1: some serious papal bond stories about things that we are
- 0:34Speaker 1: not allowed to talk about on the air. So do
- 0:36Speaker 1: you have any rebuttal to your ex Nationals teammates that
- 0:39Speaker 1: I was hanging around for a week with.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Hey, man, all I gotta say is play hard, party
- 0:44Speaker 3: hard a j That's how it works to the big leagues.
- 0:47Speaker 2: Man, That's it right.
- 0:49Speaker 1: They told they told me if there was a story
- 0:51Speaker 1: about you sleeping somewhere and you woke up, I don't know,
- 0:56Speaker 1: you threw up in a garbage can or something. I
- 0:58Speaker 1: don't know. They've told there were some story that I
- 1:00Speaker 1: was like, that's the path that I know I love.
- 1:02Speaker 1: So let's just go out.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a known puker.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Aj I puke and rally so yeah, you know, long
- 1:11Speaker 3: night out next morning, gotta get rid of the demons.
- 1:15Speaker 2: Be ready to play, baby, all.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Right, that's fair, that's fair. Speaking of being ready to play,
- 1:20Speaker 1: last time we had you on, you were complaining how
- 1:23Speaker 1: the Red Sox sucked and they're the worst team ever
- 1:26Speaker 1: and they should trade the whole team. And then all
- 1:29Speaker 1: of a sudden they win fifteen games in a row
- 1:33Speaker 1: and now here they are in the wildcard racey, I mean,
- 1:35Speaker 1: they are right in it and they can't be stopped.
- 1:38Speaker 1: I watch the fans give them a standing ovation after
- 1:40Speaker 1: they lost yesterday. What the heck changed in Beantown?
- 1:44Speaker 2: Well, I tell you what. AJ.
- 1:47Speaker 3: There's a guy named ikf Isaiah kinder Philefa who made
- 1:51Speaker 3: a statement about three or four weeks ago. It said
- 1:56Speaker 3: that there were too many khaki pants and zip up
- 2:01Speaker 3: around the clubhouse. And to me that kind of that
- 2:05Speaker 3: kind of hit home because I'm sitting here thinking, well,
- 2:08Speaker 3: if you got too many front office guys around trying
- 2:11Speaker 3: to you know, overmanage or step over their boundaries, guys
- 2:17Speaker 3: are getting bombarded with too.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Much information, and I have a sneaky.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Suspicion that that has come to an end and the
- 2:26Speaker 3: guys have said, you know what, if the world everybody
- 2:31Speaker 3: go to hell, We're gonna play our own style of baseball.
- 2:35Speaker 2: And they have completely done a one eighty.
- 2:38Speaker 3: They have switched away they played, They have switched their
- 2:41Speaker 3: mentality and they are playing like balls out, night in
- 2:47Speaker 3: and night out for themselves.
- 2:49Speaker 2: And the leader of the pack is Wilson contreres Man.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Pat I gotta.
- 2:56Speaker 5: I got a theory, uh, coming out of the break.
- 2:59Speaker 5: I don't know if you saw this, but coming out
- 3:01Speaker 5: of the break, the Boston Red Sox have the worst
- 3:03Speaker 5: home record in the major leagues, and you spend a
- 3:06Speaker 5: lot of time there. You know those fans real well,
- 3:08Speaker 5: you know how Fenway is supposed to be a superpower,
- 3:11Speaker 5: not the place where you go lose. And I was like,
- 3:14Speaker 5: there's no way that's going to keep up. There is
- 3:16Speaker 5: no way they're going to be seventeen and twenty seven
- 3:19Speaker 5: in this home park. This is as soon as they
- 3:21Speaker 5: get the fans on their side, because you know, as
- 3:23Speaker 5: things don't go well, and you know better just as
- 3:24Speaker 5: well as anybody, things don't go well, they'll let you know.
- 3:27Speaker 4: But the opposite happens.
- 3:28Speaker 5: The opposite happens, right, So I feel like we've seen
- 3:31Speaker 5: that switch, and we've seen them turn fenway back into
- 3:36Speaker 5: that place no one else wants to come into. Do
- 3:38Speaker 5: you think that that is the thing that's going to
- 3:41Speaker 5: push them into the postseason and go on a run here?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Whatever I do, I do, they have found a way
- 3:48Speaker 3: to harness playing together.
- 3:51Speaker 2: They have found a way to win at home.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Finally, I think that this young pitching staff has really
- 3:59Speaker 3: been there throughout the beginning.
- 4:02Speaker 2: But I said this too, I said this too on
- 4:05Speaker 2: a pregame show.
- 4:07Speaker 3: I said, whatever team goes back to playing without all
- 4:10Speaker 3: these analytics and goes back.
- 4:12Speaker 2: To playing small ball and old school baseball is gonna
- 4:17Speaker 2: win and they're gonna start winning games if they do that,
- 4:19Speaker 2: And sure enough they have.
- 4:21Speaker 3: I think during this streak they bunted six or seven times,
- 4:25Speaker 3: and they hadn't bunted but five times all season long
- 4:29Speaker 3: when Alex Corr was at the Helm.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Now, I'm not saying the reason is Alex because of
- 4:35Speaker 2: Alex Cora Levin.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I think the guys have had a few player only
- 4:39Speaker 3: meetings and said, hey, listen, we're gonna start playing different.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And like I mentioned earlier, this young pitching staff man
- 4:48Speaker 3: with Bennett Connerley early Peyton totally.
- 4:51Speaker 2: Man, these guys have single.
- 4:53Speaker 3: Handedly kept them in this and and now you got
- 4:56Speaker 3: guys like a Bray you who's getting high, Duran, He's
- 5:01Speaker 3: finally coming around. And so when you get guys like
- 5:05Speaker 3: that all pitching in, man, it makes for a good
- 5:07Speaker 3: recipe for to win some home games. And you know
- 5:11Speaker 3: as well as I do. Guys, Man, when you come
- 5:13Speaker 3: into Finway Park, the clubhouse sucks. The visiting clubhouse sucks.
- 5:19Speaker 3: The fans are.
- 5:20Speaker 2: On top of you, and you have to use that
- 5:22Speaker 2: as a home field advantage.
- 5:23Speaker 3: And I think they realize that and are now using
- 5:27Speaker 3: that to advantage.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Man.
- 5:29Speaker 1: A couple of things. First of all, the clubhouse is better,
- 5:33Speaker 1: But it's not the clubhouse that really sucks. It's the
- 5:36Speaker 1: walk from the dugout to home plate. That's what really sucks.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Pat.
- 5:39Speaker 1: It's a long ass walk. You're tired if you're not
- 5:42Speaker 1: used to it. You have to be in shape to
- 5:44Speaker 1: get from the dugout to home play. Trust me, as
- 5:47Speaker 1: a catcher, I'm like, oh, I got to run there
- 5:48Speaker 1: nine times a day, nine times every It's like, Man,
- 5:51Speaker 1: I'm out of breath. But and also the other thing
- 5:54Speaker 1: I want to talk to you about is you mentioned
- 5:55Speaker 1: Wilson Controro's right. You were known to stir it up
- 5:58Speaker 1: a little bit every once in a while, cast some
- 6:00Speaker 1: fights every once in a while, because all this team
- 6:02Speaker 1: needed Wilson Contraras to get into a fight every single day,
- 6:05Speaker 1: and all of a sudden they don't lose.
- 6:08Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, that's the way it seems. Aja it
- 6:11Speaker 3: really does, man. But at the same time, I think
- 6:14Speaker 3: they you know, you got leaders on the team, right,
- 6:18Speaker 3: and the leader of the pitching and there's a there's
- 6:21Speaker 3: a pitching staff leader, and there's an everyday guy leader,
- 6:24Speaker 3: and the pitching staff leader Sonny Gray, and the everyday
- 6:27Speaker 3: leaders Wilson Contreras, man, And you wouldn't know as well
- 6:30Speaker 3: as I do that the rest of the team takes
- 6:34Speaker 3: on the personality of those leaders. I mean, when we
- 6:37Speaker 3: had our great teams, we took on the personality of
- 6:40Speaker 3: David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia and and and and guys
- 6:44Speaker 3: just followed in suit. And I think that they saw
- 6:47Speaker 3: the way that Wilson Contreras was playing and said.
- 6:50Speaker 2: Hey, you know what, we need to pick it up.
- 6:53Speaker 3: And start playing the way this guy plays. Because he
- 6:56Speaker 3: was giving it all every day and you know how
- 6:59Speaker 3: it is. Man Sometimes a brawl turn a team around and.
- 7:05Speaker 2: Was it part of it? I don't know, but it
- 7:07Speaker 2: definitely seems like it.

- 8:07Speaker 6: The number twelve dot com slash f o u l
- 8:09Speaker 6: k twelve dot com slash foul.
- 8:12Speaker 1: Is it true? Now? I heard this from certain people
- 8:14Speaker 1: up there in the Boston area that you went down
- 8:16Speaker 1: in the Red Sox clubhouse and you were telling Wilson
- 8:19Speaker 1: to go out there and fight everybody. You said, if
- 8:22Speaker 1: you don't fight someone, I'm gonna fight them. So is
- 8:24Speaker 1: that true that you went down there and were just
- 8:26Speaker 1: stirring the pot and making him angry before he took
- 8:29Speaker 1: the field, so that you could get credit for this.
- 8:32Speaker 2: No, I I did say though I was on the field.
- 8:35Speaker 3: This was on the field. I did tell him. I said, Man,
- 8:38Speaker 3: I like your style. I like the way you play.
- 8:41Speaker 3: I like the way you play angry. I've always liked
- 8:44Speaker 3: players that play angry, and uh, keep it up, and hey,
- 8:50Speaker 3: maybe maybe a brawl might turn this thing around. They've
- 8:53Speaker 3: been known to in the in the past. And that's
- 8:56Speaker 3: all I said to him. Man, So I'll lead the
- 8:59Speaker 3: rest up to him.
- 9:00Speaker 2: Man.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Okay, okay, that's fair. That's fair. That's fair. But hey,
- 9:05Speaker 1: what about the pitching. The pitching has been good, right.
- 9:08Speaker 1: You mentioned a lot of the names. Sonny Gray was
- 9:10Speaker 1: on the hot seat to be traded. Duran was talking
- 9:12Speaker 1: about traded, Contreras was talking about traded because of this
- 9:15Speaker 1: win streak. Does this mean they're gonna keep these guys
- 9:17Speaker 1: because Sonny Gray's having a hell of year.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah, one hundred percent A and not only the starting pitchers, Man,
- 9:24Speaker 3: you know, I gotta give my bullpen guys.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I gotta give them credit. Aj.
- 9:28Speaker 3: I mean, you got four guys in this bullpen all
- 9:32Speaker 3: have sub three e r's man, And uh, when you
- 9:35Speaker 3: have guys like Garrett Whitlock and erauders Chapman on the
- 9:39Speaker 3: back end, Man, they're they're lights out, and they've been
- 9:43Speaker 3: lights out all year long, and and and secondly, they're
- 9:47Speaker 3: all staying healthy.
- 9:48Speaker 2: So which is which is key because come come to
- 9:51Speaker 2: the end of.
- 9:52Speaker 3: The season, come playoffs, everybody's gonna be looking for bullpen help.
- 9:57Speaker 2: You know that. And that's the way it is.
- 9:58Speaker 3: And so I gotta give boys in the bullpen up here,
- 10:01Speaker 3: bean Town, I gotta give them a little respect because
- 10:05Speaker 3: they are throwing the daylights out of the ball.
- 10:07Speaker 2: This Guerrero kid has come along throwing one.
- 10:10Speaker 3: Hundred and two upper part of the zones, punching everybody out.
- 10:16Speaker 3: You also got Justice Slayton who's you know in there
- 10:19Speaker 3: setting up on days that Whitlock needs a day off.
- 10:21Speaker 2: So this back into the bullpen is phenomenal. And I
- 10:26Speaker 2: compared it to our bullpen.
- 10:27Speaker 3: In two thousand and seven when we won it all,
- 10:29Speaker 3: and they showed the numbers and they're early similar. So
- 10:33Speaker 3: who says now that they can't go on a World
- 10:35Speaker 3: Series run with this kind of bullpen and this pitching staff.
- 10:38Speaker 5: Man, I believe the numbers on the old pen over
- 10:42Speaker 5: the last at least the first thirteen games of this
- 10:44Speaker 5: winning streak was a one oh five era combined. That's
- 10:47Speaker 5: pretty uh, pretty good, pretty good. I also gotta just
- 10:50Speaker 5: gotta hop on the old bandwagon, specifically for Garrett Witlock.
- 10:53Speaker 5: That guy, it throws five outs every single time and
- 10:57Speaker 5: it's just been incredible for like three years and very
- 10:59Speaker 5: rarely talked about because he's not a closer, and I
- 11:02Speaker 5: know all about what that's like. One last guy pitching
- 11:05Speaker 5: and he's not a reliever, but he is a guy
- 11:07Speaker 5: that might be backed by a postseason run. Garrett Crochet,
- 11:10Speaker 5: who surprised guys he's not even pitching right now when
- 11:14Speaker 5: they just won fifteen straight. So imagine what would what
- 11:17Speaker 5: it would be like when he joined. So say this
- 11:20Speaker 5: team pulls it off, they become a wild card team,
- 11:23Speaker 5: They're going into the postseason, Garrett Chet returns, Garrett Rose,
- 11:26Speaker 5: Sonny Sonny.
- 11:28Speaker 4: Gray, Ranger Suarez, and then Mat Penn.
- 11:30Speaker 5: Would you take the Boston Red Sox pitching staff against
- 11:34Speaker 5: any pitching staff in the major leagues at that point.
- 11:37Speaker 3: Trevor, I would, Man, and you got to think about this.
- 11:40Speaker 3: They've done this without you know, Brian Beyo. I don't
- 11:44Speaker 3: know what happened. He's been a mental head case and
- 11:47Speaker 3: they've moved him to the bullpen and then all of
- 11:49Speaker 3: a sudden he starts throwing.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Good.
- 11:51Speaker 3: They've done it without him. They've done it without Garrett Whitlock.
- 11:54Speaker 3: I mean Garrett Crochet.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Who.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Has been on the i L for a long time
- 12:00Speaker 3: now and has a really complicated capsule injury, which I'm
- 12:04Speaker 3: not a doctor, I don't know much about.
- 12:06Speaker 2: But he still hasn't picked up a baseball yet.
- 12:09Speaker 3: So they're gonna get him back, probably right before postseason,
- 12:14Speaker 3: towards the last two weeks of the season.
- 12:16Speaker 2: But man, and you.
- 12:19Speaker 3: Know as well as I do, you only need four
- 12:21Speaker 3: starters in the postseason. And Ranger Soarez has been phenomenal
- 12:25Speaker 3: this year. Uh yeah, we're looking at it right here.
- 12:29Speaker 3: Peyton Toley to me, is is the man that's sitting
- 12:33Speaker 3: in the bushes right This guy can go up and
- 12:35Speaker 3: pitch up against any team's number one.
- 12:38Speaker 2: I've seen him do it. And he's still a young kid.
- 12:42Speaker 3: Big kid and Soky Connery Early and so you know
- 12:47Speaker 3: as well as I do you need pitching when it
- 12:49Speaker 3: comes to the postseason, and so, uh yeah, I picked
- 12:53Speaker 3: our our foul territory preseason picks. I picked the Red
- 12:59Speaker 3: Sox to go to the World Series. And that's a
- 13:01Speaker 3: little bit. While I was kind of pouting, getting a
- 13:04Speaker 3: little bit upset about my boys not pulling me, pulling
- 13:07Speaker 3: their weight, but now look at them, Babby, They're on
- 13:11Speaker 3: They're on cloud nine, and uh let's keep it rolling.
- 13:14Speaker 2: Man.
- 13:15Speaker 1: No team has ever won the World Series at one
- 13:19Speaker 1: fifteen consecutive game, so I'm just saying, no team has
- 13:21Speaker 1: ever done it, so they could be the first. Also,
- 13:24Speaker 1: Bennett has been awesome for them. Let's not forget about Bett.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you know, Early and some of the other
- 13:29Speaker 1: totally and Gray and Ranger, but Bennett has been outstanding
- 13:33Speaker 1: for them as a youngster coming up and pitching. But
- 13:36Speaker 1: what I'm mad about at you, Pap, is allegedly a
- 13:40Speaker 1: role as Chapman was traded to the White Sox. According
- 13:43Speaker 1: to Bob Nightingale, it was done and then the Red
- 13:46Speaker 1: Sox pulled the plug. Why did you pull the plug
- 13:49Speaker 1: on this trade? It would have helped the White Sox tremendously.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Man, I had no idea about that, Honestly, I didn't have.
- 13:56Speaker 1: Man.
- 13:57Speaker 3: Only one I knew about was when we brought Ganie
- 13:59Speaker 3: over here and they talked to me about it.
- 14:01Speaker 2: But uh, man, I didn't know about that trade.
- 14:04Speaker 3: If I if I would an aj and I would
- 14:06Speaker 3: have known about it, I would have let y'all have.
- 14:08Speaker 1: It roll this man, that was nice. That's nice, you, pat,
- 14:11Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate that's paybacks for two thousand and
- 14:14Speaker 1: five when we whipped your ass in the playoffs, So
- 14:16Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Guys.
- 14:18Speaker 3: Hey, Well, speaking of two thousand and five, y'all a
- 14:21Speaker 3: going like a twelve or fifteen game win streak, then, no.
- 14:24Speaker 1: We just dominated wire to wire path we only won eight.
- 14:27Speaker 1: You know, we won sixteen out of our last seventeen,
- 14:29Speaker 1: including the playoffs, so you know we didn't need that.
- 14:31Speaker 1: We were already in and then we just turned it
- 14:33Speaker 1: up at the end and you know, swept your team.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I don't think you got to pitch, did you in
- 14:37Speaker 1: that series? Yeah?
- 14:39Speaker 2: I pitched in that series Game two, I believe. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: then my boy, my boy rested peace.
- 14:45Speaker 3: Big Bobby Jinks man he dealt that whole series too, man,
- 14:49Speaker 3: So uh shout out to him as well.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Yeah, all right, that's what. The only thing I remember
- 14:54Speaker 1: about you facing us is two thousand and six. We
- 14:56Speaker 1: don't talk about that because I still have nightmares. No,
- 14:59Speaker 1: what did Jermaine hell us?
- 15:01Speaker 2: Nightmare?
- 15:01Speaker 4: Man?
- 15:03Speaker 1: Where are you? By the way, are you in Boston?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm in Boston right now.
- 15:07Speaker 3: They've got Apple TV game tonight and I'll be back
- 15:11Speaker 3: on tomorrow.
- 15:12Speaker 1: How did they let you be on TV? How do
- 15:14Speaker 1: they let you be on live TV? That's what I
- 15:16Speaker 1: want to.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Know, Ay, J Man, Look at this face, man, exactly.
- 15:21Speaker 1: That's exactly my point, my point exactly.
- 15:24Speaker 2: How this is a TV face? Baby?
- 15:29Speaker 1: Hey, Pep, if you said Trevor, please jump in, because
- 15:33Speaker 1: I can't. I can't with this TV face and I'm
- 15:35Speaker 1: looking at.
- 15:36Speaker 5: I mean, you know, I was gonna jump in on
- 15:38Speaker 5: the five thing, but I was fifteen, So I don't.
- 15:42Speaker 5: I just watching you guys play, I was like, Wow,
- 15:44Speaker 5: I wish, I hope I can do that someday.
- 15:46Speaker 4: It worked out. It worked out.
- 15:48Speaker 5: Yeah, the Red Sox one of the best stories in
- 15:50Speaker 5: baseball right now. I think that, on paper is one
- 15:53Speaker 5: of the best. I think you were right in your
- 15:55Speaker 5: predictions that they are potential World Series team.
- 15:58Speaker 4: I would have agreed with you on.
- 16:00Speaker 5: It's this is not actually as surprising, I think to
- 16:03Speaker 5: a lot of people. Actually we have we have seen
- 16:06Speaker 5: will your Bray you start to turning on a little bit,
- 16:08Speaker 5: and uh, sit in, Rafaela turned on a little bit.
- 16:10Speaker 4: You know, she has hitting hitting a little bit better.
- 16:12Speaker 4: And that's one of the things too. The pop. Where's
- 16:14Speaker 4: the pop been? Right? So?
- 16:16Speaker 5: Uh, I actually want your take on this if because
- 16:18Speaker 5: those guys, those guys were a big reason that the
- 16:21Speaker 5: last year was was I think a season that turned
- 16:23Speaker 5: out ahead of people's expectations a little bit. So without
- 16:27Speaker 5: Rafael and without Bray, you really and she to putting
- 16:30Speaker 5: the ball over the fence, which if if maybe it's
- 16:33Speaker 5: all three, which one of those guys do you think
- 16:35Speaker 5: makes the biggest step forward in the pop and starts
- 16:37Speaker 5: to add some of those those homer games, putting up
- 16:40Speaker 5: those three run crooked numbers in those innings, because that's
- 16:43Speaker 5: you know, that's how that's how you end up winning
- 16:45Speaker 5: playoff games.
- 16:45Speaker 4: Anyways, you got to get that three on home run.
- 16:48Speaker 8: Yeah, man, that's my guy, say don Raphael, uh Man,
- 16:53Speaker 8: it's to me he has finally figured out how to to.
- 16:59Speaker 2: Man you in that bat.
- 17:00Speaker 3: What I mean by that is is be able to
- 17:03Speaker 3: get your pitches and lay off pitchers pitches, and when
- 17:07Speaker 3: you both, but only when you get your pitch, be
- 17:10Speaker 3: able to do damage with that pitch.
- 17:11Speaker 2: Right, So he's finally figured that out.
- 17:15Speaker 3: You don't see him won two o two right out
- 17:17Speaker 3: the gate all the time anymore. And my man's put
- 17:21Speaker 3: all up and away and he's finally been able to
- 17:25Speaker 3: do damage on pitchers that make mistakes.
- 17:27Speaker 2: And uh, I said this, I think a couple of
- 17:30Speaker 2: years ago, this man right here.
- 17:32Speaker 3: But with the way he plays on both sides of
- 17:34Speaker 3: the ball, offense and defense, I mean, I think he
- 17:37Speaker 3: has the highest war for center field in the American League.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Uh he had. He has the chance to be MVP
- 17:44Speaker 2: Tight caliber player one year. I really do. I think
- 17:47Speaker 2: I think the sguise is the limit for that cat?
- 17:51Speaker 1: Pat Before we let you go, what's your favorite restaurant
- 17:53Speaker 1: in Boston you're gonna hit on Friday nights since you
- 17:54Speaker 1: don't have to work.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Uh, Ocean Pride, man, Ocean Prior. Can't go wrong with
- 17:59Speaker 2: Ocean Prime out of the season. It's a chain. It's
- 18:02Speaker 2: a chain. Yeah, well okay, good choices in Boston.
- 18:06Speaker 1: And that's like, that's like saying I want to go
- 18:08Speaker 1: to what is it Landry's Seafood right and get the.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Many good places?
- 18:17Speaker 3: Yeah no, man, no, I'm not an Italian guy, dude,
- 18:23Speaker 3: I don't.
- 18:23Speaker 2: I don't like all that, you know, them noodles and
- 18:25Speaker 2: all that bs man. I just I want steak and
- 18:28Speaker 2: potatoes and some vodka. Baby, just give it to me.
- 18:31Speaker 1: What about like Neptune Oyster House, none of that?
- 18:35Speaker 3: Yeah, there's they're they're good. You got Road thirty four.
- 18:37Speaker 3: They got good seafood too. So man, it's hard to choose.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Bosston's got great restaurants, you know that.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I know. But no, none of them noodles, None of
- 18:46Speaker 1: them noodles. According to Jonathan tower Man, we don't want
- 18:49Speaker 1: no noodles, man. What about a'll go to the Holy
- 18:53Speaker 1: Stores in North. Then none of that's.
- 18:56Speaker 2: No, I'll leave all that up to Jim Rice. Man,
- 18:58Speaker 2: he's all on the.
- 19:02Speaker 1: All right, all right, Well thanks Pat. If you want

- 20:17Speaker 1: All right, we're back. It's my favorite, my favorite favorite
- 20:21Speaker 1: time of the show when we get to talk about
- 20:24Speaker 1: that team on the North Side. I don't even want
- 20:26Speaker 1: to call them by their name. I'm gonna call them
- 20:27Speaker 1: the Chubbs. Patrick Mooney, senior writer for The Athletic and
- 20:31Speaker 1: host of Northside Territory. And you know what, I don't
- 20:34Speaker 1: even want to I don't. We're gonna jump right into
- 20:35Speaker 1: the Tarrek Schooble in your Destinations column. I have not
- 20:39Speaker 1: looked at these, but we're gonna start at tier five.
- 20:41Speaker 1: That says why the model says no. But there's a
- 20:44Speaker 1: chance for the Cubs to land Schooble. I know it's
- 20:46Speaker 1: not gonna happen, so we'll just play Fantasy World for
- 20:49Speaker 1: a little bit here.
- 20:49Speaker 4: Patrick.
- 20:53Speaker 9: You know, the Cubs say there's a non zero chance
- 20:58Speaker 9: they'd get Schooble, but I think by the time it
- 21:03Speaker 9: comes down to the deadline first, we don't even know
- 21:06Speaker 9: if schoobl is gonna get traded or not. I mean
- 21:09Speaker 9: that was part of the exercise that my colleague will
- 21:13Speaker 9: Sammon you kind of came up with the idea, and
- 21:15Speaker 9: Katie Wu helped collaborate on that one. It still feels
- 21:19Speaker 9: like the Tigers are taking these I think if they
- 21:24Speaker 9: have ten games against sub five hundred teams before the deadline,
- 21:28Speaker 9: they still have twenty more games against the teams in
- 21:31Speaker 9: front of them in the Central and August in September.
- 21:34Speaker 9: So they weren't built to be blown up at the deadline.
- 21:38Speaker 9: That's not why you signed Framber or bring back Verlander,
- 21:42Speaker 9: or give gliber the qualifying offer. And you know, everyone
- 21:47Speaker 9: knows if the Dodgers want Schooble and he's getting traded,
- 21:51Speaker 9: they can get him. The Cubs aren't going to like
- 21:54Speaker 9: make a better offer than the Brewers if they really
- 21:57Speaker 9: want Schooble. I still think, since we're playing fantasy baseball age,
- 22:02Speaker 9: I think they wind up with either a lower tier
- 22:05Speaker 9: rental starter, or they try to get that guy who's
- 22:08Speaker 9: under club control beyond the season.
- 22:13Speaker 5: Okay, so we don't know about Terrek Scooble and where
- 22:17Speaker 5: he's gonna go. They have not come out of the
- 22:18Speaker 5: second half like kept firing all cylinders. It's amazing how
- 22:22Speaker 5: things are going to change like this all throughout the
- 22:24Speaker 5: trade deadline. It's literally every team is five hundred. So
- 22:28Speaker 5: now they've fallen back a little bit, it's probably become
- 22:29Speaker 5: more likely than they are going to sell.
- 22:32Speaker 4: What about other guys in this rotation?
- 22:35Speaker 5: I know there's been another guy floated who do you
- 22:38Speaker 5: think is more likely to move from the Tigers? Say
- 22:40Speaker 5: they are sellers, Trek Scubele or guy like Casey Mice.
- 22:46Speaker 9: It feels like if you trade one, you might as
- 22:48Speaker 9: well trade the other. I think you know Scott Harris,
- 22:53Speaker 9: you know, I got to know him when he was
- 22:55Speaker 9: first starting out working at riley Field under THEO Epstein
- 22:59Speaker 9: and Jed Hole and I think if you had to
- 23:02Speaker 9: put him in one bucket or the other, he's a
- 23:04Speaker 9: little more like Jed than THEO in terms of being
- 23:08Speaker 9: very you know, data driven, bottom line focused, unemotional. You know,
- 23:18Speaker 9: we saw what Jed did at the twenty one trade
- 23:21Speaker 9: deadline of getting rid of almost all of those remaining
- 23:24Speaker 9: key pieces from the twenty sixteen World Series team. And
- 23:27Speaker 9: you know, they they didn't connect on every single deal,
- 23:30Speaker 9: but they got a superstar in p Crow Armstrong. And
- 23:34Speaker 9: I think that, you know, part of this is an
- 23:38Speaker 9: eye test, Like it's not just the numbers. I think
- 23:40Speaker 9: you get to a point where, at least you know
- 23:43Speaker 9: the Cubs in twenty one it was looking at you know,
- 23:46Speaker 9: how far are they underneath five hundred? What do the
- 23:50Speaker 9: underlying numbers say? Like when you watch this team night tonight,
- 23:53Speaker 9: what does it look like? And I think mine are
- 23:56Speaker 9: saying is that's kind of what the Tiger's going to
- 23:58Speaker 9: be doing here for the next week or so. Like
- 23:59Speaker 9: they're not in rush. They don't have to trade them.
- 24:03Speaker 9: They could still get a compic through the qualifying offer.
- 24:05Speaker 9: But you know, I think Scott Harris will not be
- 24:09Speaker 9: overly sentimental about this one. He won't be afraid to move,
- 24:14Speaker 9: you know, maybe the best pitcher on the planet.
- 24:17Speaker 1: All right, so can we pull the tears back up again?
- 24:20Speaker 1: I love this. I absolutely love your tiers because there's
- 24:23Speaker 1: a couple of things, A couple of teams in here.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I want to talk about if we could show that
- 24:28Speaker 1: graphic again one tier four small market surprise the Brewers.
- 24:32Speaker 1: It shouldn't be a surprise. They need to go for it, right,
- 24:35Speaker 1: They need to go for it, and they need to
- 24:37Speaker 1: get to the World Series. They haven't been there in
- 24:39Speaker 1: forever since what nineteen eighty three or eighty two I
- 24:41Speaker 1: believe it is eighty two. And then you go to
- 24:44Speaker 1: Tier three, the Phillies, Yankees, Braves, usual suspects, but then
- 24:49Speaker 1: the Rays. So the Rays to me are like the Brewers.
- 24:52Speaker 1: The Rays win every year, they're in contention, every year,
- 24:55Speaker 1: they make the postseason. They're a nice little story, but
- 24:57Speaker 1: they never actually go for that final piece. So if
- 25:00Speaker 1: I'm a Brewers fan or I'm a Rais fan, I
- 25:03Speaker 1: would be clamoring to my owner, to my GM, we
- 25:07Speaker 1: need to go for it. We need to go get
- 25:09Speaker 1: Trek Scooble. Give up a couple minor league prospects. The
- 25:13Speaker 1: Brewers are supposed to have a ton of them, the
- 25:14Speaker 1: Rays are supposed to have a bunch of them. Give
- 25:16Speaker 1: away a couple of those, and let's actually really go
- 25:19Speaker 1: for it, because if you go MS Harrison, Schooble in
- 25:22Speaker 1: any series, you've got a great chance to win it.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And if you're the Rais, you have McClanahan and Rasmussen
- 25:29Speaker 1: and Schooble, you got another great chance to win with
- 25:32Speaker 1: their bullpen. So I wish these two teams two and
- 25:35Speaker 1: four are the ones that I really would love to
- 25:37Speaker 1: see just all in and go for it.
- 25:40Speaker 9: AJ, this is your dream scenario. Get schoobl out of
- 25:42Speaker 9: the Ale Central, clearing a path for the White Sox,
- 25:45Speaker 9: and it would be like a Cups fan's worst nightmare
- 25:49Speaker 9: to have Schoobll you know, lined up, you know, potentially
- 25:54Speaker 9: for another best of five series. And in that scenario,
- 25:58Speaker 9: the Brewers would be rested. I think that's why the
- 26:00Speaker 9: Cubs are even less likely to land Schoople if their
- 26:05Speaker 9: positions were reversed, if they were in first place, I
- 26:08Speaker 9: think they'd be more inclined to do that type of
- 26:11Speaker 9: blockbuster deal. Like Jed Hoyer has said it repeatedly that
- 26:16Speaker 9: you know that first round by is like winning a
- 26:18Speaker 9: playoff series.
- 26:19Speaker 1: Your opponent.
- 26:21Speaker 9: Comes in, you know, if not decimated, it's certainly in
- 26:25Speaker 9: a lesser state, and you get to rest up and
- 26:27Speaker 9: line up everything. That's it was a key factor in
- 26:30Speaker 9: last year's Cubs Brewers series, the fact that the Cubs,
- 26:35Speaker 9: through Matthew Boyd on short rest, they lost that game.
- 26:39Speaker 9: The home team won every game in that five game series.
- 26:44Speaker 9: And so yeah, I mean the Brewers are interesting. Like
- 26:47Speaker 9: you know, Will, Katie and I you know, have done
- 26:49Speaker 9: you know a lot of reporting on this for a
- 26:51Speaker 9: couple of different projects along with you Ken Rosenthal. And
- 26:55Speaker 9: it's funny how the Brewers they made one of the
- 26:57Speaker 9: greatest deadline deals ever and they they kind of jumped
- 27:01Speaker 9: the market on that one to get CC Sabbathia and
- 27:03Speaker 9: that sort of helped set this foundation in Milwaukee. But like,
- 27:08Speaker 9: as they've you become this sort of gold standard for
- 27:12Speaker 9: the industry, they've really become extremely disciplined and like stuck
- 27:17Speaker 9: to that process, which almost makes them, you know, less
- 27:21Speaker 9: likely to pull off a move like that. But I'm
- 27:24Speaker 9: with you.
- 27:24Speaker 4: I think.
- 27:26Speaker 9: They have put together another special season. They've shown that
- 27:31Speaker 9: they have this ability to just go out and you know,
- 27:34Speaker 9: draft guys, trade for guys, waiver claims, you know, you
- 27:39Speaker 9: name it, you they find and develop talent. And so
- 27:44Speaker 9: you would think that would give them a lot more
- 27:46Speaker 9: confidence to go out and make that move because the
- 27:50Speaker 9: Cubs and Brewers like put everything into that five game series,
- 27:53Speaker 9: and you know for what to get swept by the Dodgers.
- 28:04Speaker 6: If you're watching us, you already know we're wearing mack
- 28:06Speaker 6: Weldon right now as we talk about a great brand
- 28:09Speaker 6: that makes things so comfortable and easy to wear. But
- 28:11Speaker 6: if you're listening to the show, let me tell you
- 28:13Speaker 6: a little bit more about mac Weldon with my friend
- 28:16Speaker 6: Aer Kratz.
- 28:17Speaker 10: Yeah, it's comfortable, it's light. It's summertime right now. For
- 28:22Speaker 10: me though, they cater to what I need tall clothes. Normally,
- 28:27Speaker 10: when I buy tall clothes it's like something that's cumbersome
- 28:30Speaker 10: and boxy. It still fits incredibly well, super light, perfect
- 28:35Speaker 10: for the summertime. They got me all covered.
- 28:39Speaker 6: Comfortable performance material can be yours. Mac Weldon is the spot.
- 28:45Speaker 6: Don't sweat the heat this summer. Feel as effortlessly cool
- 28:49Speaker 6: as you look. With mac Weldon. Go to Mackweldon dot
- 28:51Speaker 6: com and get twenty percent off your first order of

- 28:58Speaker 6: com code foul.
- 29:00Speaker 4: Okay, so sorry, I just had a cutout. I don't know.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Back to me, you may, I agree wholeheartedly.
- 29:07Speaker 5: Also, just on the on the school thing, especially with
- 29:09Speaker 5: the two teams, you can't make the cases too expensive.
- 29:12Speaker 5: He's going to be a free agent next year, ten
- 29:13Speaker 5: million dollars less thnans contract. Generally for those last two months,
- 29:16Speaker 5: you're gonna.
- 29:17Speaker 4: Go for it. Go for it.
- 29:17Speaker 5: You're both leading your divisions. I mean, guys want two
- 29:20Speaker 5: signs in a row. You're not going to get a
- 29:22Speaker 5: better opportunity than this, so do it.
- 29:24Speaker 4: But I want to.
- 29:25Speaker 5: Switch gears really quickly to the Cubs and a comment
- 29:29Speaker 5: that council said when asked about what they're looking for
- 29:32Speaker 5: at the.
- 29:32Speaker 4: Trade deadline, he just said, I want this team to
- 29:35Speaker 4: be better. So we know about the starting pitching woes.
- 29:38Speaker 5: But outside of going and grabbing a guy like Terry Schogle,
- 29:41Speaker 5: what else, in your opinion do you think the Cubs
- 29:44Speaker 5: direly need in order to make a run of this
- 29:47Speaker 5: thing and maybe go beyond and get past you know
- 29:51Speaker 5: the results that they got last.
- 29:52Speaker 9: Year, the be pitching, pitching and more pitching. That was
- 29:58Speaker 9: the biggest takeaway from last October. Even if the Cubs
- 30:03Speaker 9: had won that game five Milwaukee, they did not have
- 30:08Speaker 9: enough arms to beat the Dodgers and then win yet
- 30:14Speaker 9: another playoff round on top of that, Like you know,
- 30:16Speaker 9: you're looking at potentially for playoff rounds. That's the likeliest
- 30:20Speaker 9: path for the Cubs, assuming they make the playoffs, which
- 30:24Speaker 9: they have pretty strong odds right now. And so I
- 30:27Speaker 9: think ideally they'd like that starter who's under club control
- 30:32Speaker 9: for beyond just this season. The Angels have a couple
- 30:38Speaker 9: of guys like that. They really like Joe Ryan, although
- 30:43Speaker 9: it seems like the Twins are not all that inclined
- 30:46Speaker 9: to sell at the moment. I think if the Schooble
- 30:50Speaker 9: prices are what the Cubs deemed to be outlandish, then
- 30:55Speaker 9: you start looking at those rental starters, whether it's Freddie Peralta,
- 31:02Speaker 9: Kevin Gosman. If the Blue Jays do ultimately sell, and
- 31:06Speaker 9: I think there are ways to make the bullpen better
- 31:09Speaker 9: considering the Cubs don't really have a closer period. That's,
- 31:12Speaker 9: you know, kind of what Council's alluding to when he
- 31:15Speaker 9: talked about out getters, Like they've been very They've gotten
- 31:18Speaker 9: a lot of buy in. Council has a good track
- 31:21Speaker 9: record with managing pitchers. You know, they have pretty good
- 31:27Speaker 9: synergy between like the pitching group, the front office, the
- 31:32Speaker 9: manager's office. But at a certain point like that could
- 31:37Speaker 9: run out, and I think they would love to get
- 31:42Speaker 9: a guy who can give you length on the front
- 31:44Speaker 9: end and then just to get build in some more
- 31:47Speaker 9: certainty the back end of the game. You know, Daniel Plancia,
- 31:51Speaker 9: who is their opening day closer. You know, at this
- 31:54Speaker 9: point they're looking at mid August, assuming no setbacks for
- 31:57Speaker 9: him to come back.
- 31:59Speaker 1: I think they got.
- 32:01Speaker 9: Either twelve or thirteen pitchers on the injury list right now,
- 32:03Speaker 9: and you can't can't really count on those guys coming back.
- 32:06Speaker 9: So they just need more certainty. And that's what Counsel
- 32:10Speaker 9: was alluding to. Like, their everyday position playing group is
- 32:13Speaker 9: pretty solid. They have an MVP candidate and Pete, and
- 32:18Speaker 9: it's just all about giving him more arms to work
- 32:23Speaker 9: with over the next two plus months.
- 32:26Speaker 1: I wanted to talk I wanted to talk to you
- 32:28Speaker 1: a little bit about Pete. By the way, that Brewers
- 32:30Speaker 1: series ended perfectly for me. I'm just I don't know
- 32:33Speaker 1: why it made me smile when the Brewers won that series.
- 32:36Speaker 1: Just it was weird. Then I was so happy when
- 32:40Speaker 1: that ended. But that's just me. Not on anyone else,
- 32:44Speaker 1: just me, Patrick Pete, Pete Crow Armstrong at the beginning
- 32:48Speaker 1: of the year really struggled. He got into it the
- 32:49Speaker 1: White Sox fan and everyone's like, oh, look he's losing it.
- 32:52Speaker 1: And since then he if not the best player in baseball,
- 32:57Speaker 1: he is in the top two or three best players
- 32:59Speaker 1: in baseball. He's in the MVP conversation. His defense has
- 33:02Speaker 1: always been steady, but he has taken his offense to
- 33:05Speaker 1: a different level, especially power wise. What did he figure
- 33:09Speaker 1: out or what did he change?
- 33:12Speaker 9: Yeah, it's been an amazing transformation. Like this is like
- 33:14Speaker 9: the best case version of Pete that the Cubs hoped for,
- 33:19Speaker 9: but they didn't think it would happen this quickly by
- 33:23Speaker 9: any means. Like, and he's become more patient without sacrificing
- 33:29Speaker 9: his power. He's selective, disciplined on time against right handed
- 33:37Speaker 9: and left handed pitching. I mean that's been, you know,
- 33:39Speaker 9: big part of growth here. He's really taken to the
- 33:42Speaker 9: leadoff spot. And you know, you referred to an agent
- 33:47Speaker 9: like the Cubs may have the best player on the
- 33:49Speaker 9: field on both sides of the ball for every playoff
- 33:52Speaker 9: game they play this October. And I think that's something
- 33:54Speaker 9: you have to factor in at the trade deadline. If
- 33:56Speaker 9: they don't get a Schooble, you have to get more
- 34:00Speaker 9: just because you can't take this type of year for granted. Obviously,
- 34:03Speaker 9: if Shohy comes back, you know as a pitcher, you know,
- 34:08Speaker 9: if Aaron Judge gets healthy again. But right now, I mean,
- 34:10Speaker 9: he's leading the majors in war and I think you
- 34:13Speaker 9: have to honor that. I know, you know how Cubs
- 34:15Speaker 9: fans are edge. They're thinking that PCA will just kind
- 34:18Speaker 9: of like be this for the next ten to fifteen years.
- 34:20Speaker 9: But you guys know it doesn't work out that way.
- 34:24Speaker 9: Like you have to have, you know, surprises. You have
- 34:28Speaker 9: to have special seasons if you're going to go far
- 34:31Speaker 9: in the playoffs, and he gives them a huge chance
- 34:35Speaker 9: to make those game changing, series changing plays on offense
- 34:40Speaker 9: and defense.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Yeah, he's the best going right now. It's been amazing.
- 34:45Speaker 1: It's been incredible to watch, especially his plate discipline has
- 34:48Speaker 1: really improved. And I mean he went from cub fans
- 34:52Speaker 1: complaining about this contract and now they're like, man, we
- 34:56Speaker 1: might have got a bargain here.
- 34:57Speaker 4: So listen.
- 34:58Speaker 1: He had a great first half last year. He kind
- 35:00Speaker 1: of went down a little bit in the second half,
- 35:02Speaker 1: didn't get off to a great start. But now this
- 35:05Speaker 1: is what I think the Cubs envision. I know Craig
- 35:07Speaker 1: Council defended him for years said there's something special in
- 35:11Speaker 1: there if he stays with that and stays like this,
- 35:15Speaker 1: and can you stay disciplined. Plus, you know what I
- 35:17Speaker 1: love about Pca. He's got a little flair, He's got
- 35:20Speaker 1: a little fu attitude. He doesn't really care what people say.
- 35:23Speaker 1: I think that's great. I mean, not that I would know,
- 35:25Speaker 1: but I think that's kind of great that someone like
- 35:28Speaker 1: this exists in a city like Chicago, because you know,
- 35:31Speaker 1: the Chicago fans will hate people like that. You know,
- 35:33Speaker 1: they just despise people that have a little bit of
- 35:35Speaker 1: an attitude.
- 35:37Speaker 9: Oh yeah, if he was wearing a different uniform, my
- 35:39Speaker 9: Cups fans would not appreciate heats. But he's Look, he's
- 35:44Speaker 9: the guy that makes You've seen how much really Ville
- 35:48Speaker 9: has been built up and everything the Cubs have put
- 35:51Speaker 9: into kind of their satellite businesses around it, like Pete
- 35:54Speaker 9: is you know, the straw that serves as a drink,
- 35:57Speaker 9: whatever you want to call it. And I do think
- 36:00Speaker 9: think the offensive performance is more sustainable, Like I think
- 36:04Speaker 9: Jed Hoyer described as last year he just had this
- 36:06Speaker 9: like barrage of home run and stolen home runs and
- 36:08Speaker 9: stolen bases. This is different, like this is the shape
- 36:13Speaker 9: of this performance is fundamentally different. It's more promising. And
- 36:18Speaker 9: I think you're right on Council, just that his low
- 36:21Speaker 9: key manner sort of bounces out Pete and he has
- 36:25Speaker 9: that credibility from a long playing career in the majors
- 36:28Speaker 9: that he allowed Pete to make mistakes to be held accountable.
- 36:35Speaker 9: And you're you're seeing a lot of that growth right now.
- 36:39Speaker 1: Yes, yes, well Patrick, thank you very much. We appreciate it.
- 36:43Speaker 1: You can follow him. I don't even want I'm gonna
- 36:46Speaker 1: mess this up, so I apologize. Can you say his
- 36:49Speaker 1: name for me? Sadev Sharma, thank you, thank you.
- 36:53Speaker 9: And John Lester.
- 36:55Speaker 1: He's a regular contributor on door Side Territory.
- 37:00Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, he's joined us twice this far. He was
- 37:02Speaker 9: out in Chicago for the big twenty sixteen reunion. But yeah,
- 37:06Speaker 9: he'll be on from time to time offering his thoughts.
- 37:10Speaker 9: He's still connected. He saw some connections in Chicago and
- 37:13Speaker 9: so as you guys know, he's just an awesome, awesome talker,
- 37:17Speaker 9: really sharp guy with like some amazing perspective and like,
- 37:21Speaker 9: you know, a sneaky good sense of humor. Very humble.
- 37:24Speaker 9: So yeah, we're really looking forward to having him on.
- 37:27Speaker 9: It's kind of an open door invitation to John Nice.
- 37:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna have to call him and get him because
- 37:32Speaker 1: he hasn't even been on our show yet. So I'm
- 37:34Speaker 1: gonna have to yell at him, which is understan which
- 37:36Speaker 1: is fine, but listen. Follow North Side Territory on YouTube
- 37:40Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcast. I'll see you August first,
- 37:42Speaker 1: when the Yankees are in town. I want to sing out.
- 37:44Speaker 1: I want to sing the seventh inning stretch and throw
- 37:47Speaker 1: out the first bitch, So get it done.
- 37:49Speaker 9: We'll get to work on that. They won't listen to me,
- 37:51Speaker 9: but I'll make the suggestion perfect.
- 37:55Speaker 1: I'll call for Jake. Thanks,
