- 0:36Speaker 1: I go one on one with linebacker Josh Bines. The
- 0:39Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by bud Light Seltzer. Refresh
- 0:44Speaker 1: the game, and here's a quick reminder that you can
- 0:47Speaker 1: have the latest edition of this podcast delivered right to
- 0:50Speaker 1: your phone, tablet, or computer by subscribing on iTunes, Stitcher,
- 0:55Speaker 1: Google Play, Spotify, or pod Bean. It's the greatest thing
- 0:59Speaker 1: since End of Year lists. I am a total sucker
- 1:05Speaker 1: for the various end of year lists that come out
- 1:08Speaker 1: in the final few weeks of December. Top ten movies,
- 1:11Speaker 1: even though I've rarely seen more than one or two
- 1:14Speaker 1: Top ten news stories. Even though this year most of
- 1:17Speaker 1: them are likely to be depressing top ten books. Even
- 1:21Speaker 1: though I've been reading all the light, we cannot see
- 1:24Speaker 1: a few pages a night before bed for at least
- 1:26Speaker 1: a month, and that book came out in twenty fourteen.
- 1:30Speaker 1: If I see an end of year list, I'm reading it,
- 1:34Speaker 1: even if I know very little of the content. I
- 1:37Speaker 1: should probably make a top ten list for why I
- 1:41Speaker 1: love lists. Now let's get to the game. It began
- 1:46Speaker 1: with a salute to the Radio City Roquets Christmas Spectacular
- 1:51Speaker 1: as in one two three kick, one two three kick.
- 1:56Speaker 1: Each team began with two three and outs on offense,
- 2:00Speaker 1: but Pittsburgh's third possession was even worse. Pittsburgh has it
- 2:04Speaker 1: first intent to the nineteen yard line. The exchange was fumbled,
- 2:08Speaker 1: the ball on the ground at the twenty. The Bengals
- 2:11Speaker 1: have started celebrating and they recover the Pittsburgh Steelers fumble.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Josh Bines at the bottom of the pile comes up
- 2:18Speaker 1: with a football that led to an Austin Cybered field
- 2:21Speaker 1: goal and a three nothing Cincinnati lead. Before the first
- 2:25Speaker 1: quarter was over, the Steelers coughed it up again. Roethlisberger
- 2:29Speaker 1: back to throw short pass over the middle, caught by
- 2:31Speaker 1: Juji Smith Schuster. The ball was popped away by Von Bell.
- 2:35Speaker 1: It's scooped up by the Bengals and returned to the twenty,
- 2:38Speaker 1: but they're saying it's an incomplete pass. After reviewing the play,
- 2:43Speaker 1: the receiver completed the process of a catch. As a result,
- 2:46Speaker 1: it is a catch in a foam role, as is
- 2:49Speaker 1: his custom. Juju Smith Schuster danced down the Bengals logo
- 2:53Speaker 1: and a TikTok video before the game, then got blown
- 2:58Speaker 1: up by Von Bell and fumbled on Primetime TV. Here's
- 3:02Speaker 1: the Bengal safety. We have a limless group, and man,
- 3:05Speaker 1: we stepped up to the place to night, Monday Night Football,
- 3:07Speaker 1: the biggest stage. We're out there and hit out. The
- 3:10Speaker 1: parking man was out there doing things we love at
- 3:13Speaker 1: the highest level and we're just playing for one another,
- 3:16Speaker 1: planning for the name went back your jersey, you know,
- 3:19Speaker 1: because guys come from different stories and they're just telling
- 3:22Speaker 1: the story to night and we're going out there and
- 3:23Speaker 1: making plays. Ryan Finley, making his first start of the
- 3:26Speaker 1: year at quarterback, turned the takeaway into points with two
- 3:30Speaker 1: third down pass completions to t Higgins that drove the
- 3:33Speaker 1: Bengals to the four yard line. Finley under center, takes
- 3:36Speaker 1: the snap, hands it off Geo trying to run wide
- 3:39Speaker 1: to the right. Little ship off. Yeah. He takes it
- 3:41Speaker 1: into the end zone before tossing the ball into the air.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Touchdown Cincinnati as the Bengals go up nine nothing pending
- 3:50Speaker 1: the extra point. Giovanni Bernard finished with twenty five carries
- 3:54Speaker 1: for eighty three yards, and that touchdown run and the
- 3:57Speaker 1: point after gave the Bengals a ten en lead. Surely
- 4:01Speaker 1: big Ben would strike back right wrong. Roethlisberger back to
- 4:06Speaker 1: throw fires apastit's intercept it picked off at the thirty
- 4:10Speaker 1: eight yard line. The Bengals are running it back high
- 4:12Speaker 1: stepping his way as McKenzie Alexander he got hit after
- 4:18Speaker 1: being out of bounds and now he got some pushing
- 4:21Speaker 1: and shoving in the Bengals bench area. But McKenzie Alexander
- 4:25Speaker 1: intercepts Big Ben and runs it into Steelers territory. There
- 4:30Speaker 1: was a fifteen yard penalty for a necessary roughness that
- 4:32Speaker 1: gave the Bengals the ball at the Pittsburgh twenty six
- 4:36Speaker 1: three plays later, they were in the end zone again.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Finley catches a shotgun snap. He's back to throw the
- 4:42Speaker 1: protection's good shot pass caught over the middle, Bernardo breaks
- 4:46Speaker 1: the tackle at the five, runs into the end zone,
- 4:49Speaker 1: and throws the ball away up in the air again,
- 4:53Speaker 1: touchdown Cincinnati and the Bengals lead the Steelers by sixteen points.
- 4:59Speaker 1: The extra point he made it seventeen nothing, and all
- 5:02Speaker 1: seventeen points were the result of takeaways by the Bengals defense.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Here's Ryan Finley. We preached the heck out of that
- 5:10Speaker 1: all week. Was just winning the turnover battle versus these guys.
- 5:13Speaker 1: And you know, if you get three takeaways on defense,
- 5:16Speaker 1: you know the offense owes it to you to win
- 5:18Speaker 1: night football game. So you know, just happy we could
- 5:22Speaker 1: do enough to get that defense to win, because they
- 5:24Speaker 1: service heck deserved it. It was seventeen nothing Bengals. At
- 5:28Speaker 1: the half they had seventeen points. Roethlisberger had nineteen yards.
- 5:33Speaker 1: But in the third quarter he finally looked like the
- 5:36Speaker 1: quarterback who's made life miserable for the Bengals for seventeen years.
- 5:41Speaker 1: First with a screen pass to Chase Claypool for thirty
- 5:44Speaker 1: seven yards, and then Ben's gonna float it deep down
- 5:47Speaker 1: field into the end zone touchdown Deyonte Johnson, and just
- 5:51Speaker 1: like that, Ben Roethlisberger and the Steelers come to life
- 5:56Speaker 1: a screen passed down the sideline for a thirty six
- 5:59Speaker 1: yard game, followed immediately by a touchdown pass to Deonte Johnson.
- 6:04Speaker 1: The next time the Steelers got the ball, they drove
- 6:06Speaker 1: to the Bengals seven before settling for a field goal
- 6:09Speaker 1: that cuts Cincinnati's lead down to seven points. The Bengals
- 6:13Speaker 1: failed to score in the third quarter for the seventh
- 6:16Speaker 1: consecutive game, but they started to drive late in the
- 6:19Speaker 1: third that reached the end zone early in the fourth.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Finley in the gun second down in two runs after
- 6:26Speaker 1: Faki to p Ran, He's to the fifteen to ten
- 6:29Speaker 1: middle of the field into the end zone, touchdown Ryan
- 6:33Speaker 1: Finlay as he runs the zone read to perfection. The
- 6:37Speaker 1: Steelers all converged on samaj p Ryan and Ryan Finlay
- 6:42Speaker 1: went untouched into the end zone for the Bengals score.
- 6:46Speaker 1: Finley is not known as a running quarterback, but finished
- 6:48Speaker 1: with forty seven yards on ten carries. Well, that helps
- 6:52Speaker 1: when you have a thirty yard touchdown and don't get touched,
- 6:55Speaker 1: So that helps with the average. But you know, it's
- 6:59Speaker 1: always been, you know, a part of my game. You know,
- 7:03Speaker 1: it's kind of using athleticism to get out of some stuff.
- 7:05Speaker 1: And you know, it's it's not heavy what I do,
- 7:09Speaker 1: but I think it's it's something that I can definitely
- 7:11Speaker 1: do on occasion. And this was a game that called
- 7:13Speaker 1: for the touchdown play. Did you run that during the
- 7:15Speaker 1: week or was that just it was a concept you
- 7:17Speaker 1: guys have talked about or ru we had not ripped
- 7:20Speaker 1: that play. That was just Zach being you know, real
- 7:22Speaker 1: headsy and just kind of tagging it on there, and
- 7:25Speaker 1: you know why not. Up by two touchdowns in the fourth,
- 7:28Speaker 1: it looked like the Bengals were on the verge of
- 7:30Speaker 1: wrapping it up when they stopped the Steelers on fourth
- 7:33Speaker 1: and four with less than six minutes to go, but
- 7:36Speaker 1: Will Jackson was called for pass interference near the goal
- 7:39Speaker 1: line first and goal from the one. After the penalty
- 7:42Speaker 1: on Will Jackson five thirty four to go, the Steelers
- 7:45Speaker 1: a yard away from making it a seven point game.
- 7:47Speaker 1: They give it to Snell. He's into the end zone,
- 7:50Speaker 1: touchdown Pittsburgh. The lead was down to seven, and the
- 7:54Speaker 1: Bengals were only able to pick up one first down
- 7:56Speaker 1: on their next drive, punting the ball back to Pittsburgh
- 8:00Speaker 1: with two seventeen remaining from his own twenty four Roethlisberger
- 8:04Speaker 1: through incomplete to Smith Schuster, then incomplete to Johnson, then
- 8:10Speaker 1: incomplete to Claypool, making it fourth and ten with one
- 8:14Speaker 1: fifty six to go. The Bengal sending defenders up to
- 8:17Speaker 1: the line of scrimmage, showing blitz Jesse Bates playing deep
- 8:20Speaker 1: in the middle of the field. Roethlisberger back to throw
- 8:23Speaker 1: from the pocket his past two high incomplete coffinels Bam, bam,
- 8:31Speaker 1: how about that? Who would a fuck? That? Attack on
- 8:34Speaker 1: field goal by Cyberg with twelve seconds remaining made the
- 8:37Speaker 1: final score Cincinnati twenty seven, Pittsburgh seventeen. Here are Zach Taylor,
- 8:44Speaker 1: Ryan Finley, Von Bell and Giovanni Bernard on a memorable
- 8:49Speaker 1: Monday night. It's the resilion of the group. Has I've
- 8:51Speaker 1: ever been around, you know? They never stopped believing each other,
- 8:54Speaker 1: never stopped believing what we're asking to do. It showed
- 8:57Speaker 1: up on a huge stage tonight against divisional. Right, and
- 9:01Speaker 1: and again I just can't can't say enough how proud
- 9:03Speaker 1: I am of the coaches, the players, the staff, everybody
- 9:05Speaker 1: who's hunging there together. Here we are week week fifteen,
- 9:08Speaker 1: whatever it is, and um just what a great night
- 9:11Speaker 1: for those guys. You know, I'm obviously very happy, um,
- 9:15Speaker 1: but just happy for everyone involved. You know, just the
- 9:18Speaker 1: faces and the you know, the after the post game
- 9:21Speaker 1: locker room. Um, it's just you know, it's fun. We
- 9:25Speaker 1: haven't had too many post game locker rooms like that, uh,
- 9:29Speaker 1: you know as of recent and it's just fun. It's
- 9:31Speaker 1: always fun to get a win, and um, even better
- 9:33Speaker 1: beating the Steelers on Monday night. So just happy for
- 9:36Speaker 1: everyone involved. Really, it shows the world tonight. We played
- 9:40Speaker 1: with anybody. We played all phases of the game. We
- 9:43Speaker 1: played great team football, um uh, hand in hand football,
- 9:47Speaker 1: offs and defense, put them in position to make points
- 9:50Speaker 1: of plays, taking the ball away, just really have to
- 9:53Speaker 1: just let them loose, having fun, and then that's that's
- 9:55Speaker 1: one of my most complete games we played at the
- 9:58Speaker 1: highest level. So was gonna keep on building that, keep
- 10:01Speaker 1: going getting better to be able to beat a team
- 10:04Speaker 1: like that. We know they're a good team, they know
- 10:06Speaker 1: they're a good team. But you know, when you play
- 10:08Speaker 1: those divisional games, the records don't matter. It's about who
- 10:10Speaker 1: wants them more. And it just showed just the type
- 10:13Speaker 1: of mentality that we had going to the game. We
- 10:15Speaker 1: started off hot, you know, coming we started off hot,
- 10:18Speaker 1: come back after the second half, you know, we started
- 10:20Speaker 1: off so, but we continue to keep fighting. Man, I'm
- 10:23Speaker 1: just so thankful that I've been able to witness you know,
- 10:26Speaker 1: some of the guys make these plays, and you know,
- 10:29Speaker 1: just throughout this season, it's just been a tough year,
- 10:31Speaker 1: a tough road. But man, I'm just I'm just grateful
- 10:35Speaker 1: that I've been able to be a part of those
- 10:36Speaker 1: tough times, just because you know, when things like this happen,
- 10:39Speaker 1: it just feels that much sweeter. Now, time for postgame
- 10:41Speaker 1: analysis with my broadcast partner Dave Lapple. My point spread,
- 10:47Speaker 1: this is the Bengals biggest upset since you're playing days.
- 10:50Speaker 1: Back in nineteen eighty you were part of a Bengals
- 10:53Speaker 1: team that was a thirteen point underdog and beat the
- 10:56Speaker 1: Steelers in Pittsburgh seventeen sixteen tonight the angles of fourteen
- 11:01Speaker 1: point underdog and they beat Pittsburgh by ten. How did
- 11:04Speaker 1: they do it? Turnovers? And that was the secret to
- 11:07Speaker 1: beat in Pittsburgh anytime we beat them. I remember we
- 11:10Speaker 1: beat the Steelers another time handily, like thirty four to ten,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and they couldn't even execute a center quarterback exchange problem issue.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Mike Webster and Terry Brusch, two Hall of famers, couldn't
- 11:21Speaker 1: get the ball snapped. Wilson whitlerw was causing all kinds
- 11:24Speaker 1: of havoc in there when Ben fumbled Pouncy's snapping, thinking
- 11:29Speaker 1: two Pro bowlers, Man Carmer's kind of looking the same here.
- 11:32Speaker 1: I mean, they're having issues with the simplest things. And
- 11:35Speaker 1: turnovers were huge in this football game. You go plus three,
- 11:39Speaker 1: you're gonna win ninety five ninety seven percent of the time,
- 11:42Speaker 1: There's no doubt about it. In the first quarter, Ben
- 11:44Speaker 1: Roethlisberger was four for ten from minus five yards. How
- 11:51Speaker 1: good question. I mean, he wasn't even sacked, you know.
- 11:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's amazing that they were just
- 11:58Speaker 1: just avocating. I mean, the Bengals do. The Bengals basically
- 12:03Speaker 1: beat Pittsburgh at their own game. They ran the football
- 12:06Speaker 1: when Pittsburgh in the heyday would run the ball right
- 12:08Speaker 1: down your throat and then play suffocating defense, and whenever
- 12:11Speaker 1: you made a mistake, they pounce on it and they
- 12:13Speaker 1: make you pay, and they make you pay dearly, and
- 12:15Speaker 1: then you know, you get all, you know out of sorts.
- 12:20Speaker 1: And you make another mistake and then they make you
- 12:21Speaker 1: pay even worse. And that's that's what the Bengals did
- 12:24Speaker 1: to them tonight. They ran the ball down their throat,
- 12:26Speaker 1: They played suffocating defense at times, and every mistake that
- 12:30Speaker 1: Pittsburgh made, the Bengals really capitalize them made and pay
- 12:34Speaker 1: dearly for it offensively forty one rushing attempts and thirteen
- 12:41Speaker 1: pass attempts. It's nice to say you're going to do
- 12:43Speaker 1: something like that going into a game against the Steelers,
- 12:46Speaker 1: but to actually pull it off effectively, I did not
- 12:50Speaker 1: see that coming. It's funny. I was. I figured, Okay,
- 12:54Speaker 1: this is gonna have to be a dirty, grimy, bloody game,
- 12:57Speaker 1: you know, for the Bengals to have to be able
- 13:00Speaker 1: to compete. What I thought was as I was thinking
- 13:04Speaker 1: about the game this afternoon, had all day to think
- 13:07Speaker 1: about it, and and I'm like, all right, well, if the
- 13:09Speaker 1: Bengals can somehow incorporate a quarterback run package, maybe include
- 13:15Speaker 1: Hogan in it. Because Hogan had rushed for over one
- 13:17Speaker 1: hundred yards against the Bengals and he's averaging almost ten
- 13:19Speaker 1: yards to carry, you know, in his career, so you
- 13:22Speaker 1: know he can run the football a little bit and
- 13:24Speaker 1: he rushed for a touchdown against the Bengals, and I thought, well,
- 13:26Speaker 1: you know, maybe they'll do some kind of quarterback run
- 13:29Speaker 1: package kind of thing and and shrink the game, you know,
- 13:33Speaker 1: eat up the clock, get into the fourth quarter with
- 13:36Speaker 1: an opportunity to steal a football game. Was what I
- 13:38Speaker 1: was thinking. And you know, I said to my wife Lynns,
- 13:41Speaker 1: where as I was getting ready for the game, I said,
- 13:43Speaker 1: you know what if they can run it, and the
- 13:45Speaker 1: running backs, you know, rush for over one hundred and
- 13:48Speaker 1: the quarterback rushes for fifty or more, they got a
- 13:51Speaker 1: shot if they can you know, compress the game, eat
- 13:55Speaker 1: up the clock. You know, don't don't throw the ball
- 13:57Speaker 1: very much against this defensive front. I mean they're number
- 14:00Speaker 1: one in the league in sack sack differential, all that stuff.
- 14:03Speaker 1: You don't you don't want to get in second and
- 14:06Speaker 1: third and lungs against these guys and have to throw
- 14:08Speaker 1: the football. And so I was, you know, just thinking
- 14:11Speaker 1: along those lines, and be a son of a gun.
- 14:13Speaker 1: If Ryan Finley it doesn't turn into Lamar Finley. It
- 14:15Speaker 1: was crazy. He's out there doing zone reads and the
- 14:19Speaker 1: quarterback draw unbelievable design to run the jet. The jet
- 14:23Speaker 1: motion and the linebacker has to clear out of there
- 14:26Speaker 1: with him and just a design quarterback draw. And Ryan
- 14:29Speaker 1: Finley was saying that on his touchdown run, it wasn't
- 14:32Speaker 1: even anything they ran at practice. It was a run
- 14:35Speaker 1: play and Zach just put a tag on it, said,
- 14:38Speaker 1: you know, put a read on it at the end.
- 14:40Speaker 1: So all he did was look at high Smith. As
- 14:42Speaker 1: soon as you saw high Smith closing down the line
- 14:43Speaker 1: of Scramm pulled it out of there, walked into the
- 14:46Speaker 1: end zone untouched or to scored in one fingernail touch football.
- 14:50Speaker 1: Nobody laid anything on him. I mean, it was just incredible.
- 14:53Speaker 1: Got to give Zach a lot of credit for the
- 14:55Speaker 1: game plan, calling the game, improvising during the game, adjusting
- 14:59Speaker 1: during the game. He's been bombarded about that, where are
- 15:02Speaker 1: the adjustments? What are they doing when you hear things
- 15:04Speaker 1: like that that they made an adjustment like that as
- 15:08Speaker 1: he was calling the play, just put a little tag
- 15:10Speaker 1: on the thing. That's pretty strong. There are a lot
- 15:13Speaker 1: of defensive heroes in the game for the Bengals. Let's
- 15:16Speaker 1: start with Carl Lawson. He had a sack, He had
- 15:18Speaker 1: six quarterback hits. You've pointed out in the past that
- 15:21Speaker 1: villain Auava at his height, has a particular problem with
- 15:25Speaker 1: Carl Lawson. He does, you know, six eight and villain
- 15:29Speaker 1: Auava is a waiste bender. He's not a knee bender.
- 15:32Speaker 1: So when you're six to eight and you're you know,
- 15:36Speaker 1: the little teapot short and stout, you know, and just
- 15:39Speaker 1: bending over at the way instead of with the knees
- 15:41Speaker 1: when the little kids play. I mean, he's he's got
- 15:44Speaker 1: issues with that because then his shoulder pads are leaning forward.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Carl can you know, use his hands and pull some
- 15:50Speaker 1: moves on him, rip, swim, all those kind of things.
- 15:52Speaker 1: And Carl Lawson gives him fits he does, and you know,
- 15:56Speaker 1: villain Auava ends up kind of turning his older pads
- 16:00Speaker 1: toward the line of scrimmage parallel to the line of
- 16:02Speaker 1: scrimmage and then given a short edge. And Carl Lawson,
- 16:06Speaker 1: who's made him pay for that in the past, and
- 16:08Speaker 1: he was he was a thorn in Ben's side, There's
- 16:10Speaker 1: no doubt about it. I thought he gave very consistent pressure.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I thought Sam Harbard, Margus Hunt and a lot of
- 16:16Speaker 1: guys showed up in this football game for the Bengals
- 16:19Speaker 1: defensive front. They played as hard as they can play.
- 16:22Speaker 1: They definitely emptied the effort bucket for sure. The Bengals
- 16:26Speaker 1: also had ten pass deflections. I don't remember them ever
- 16:29Speaker 1: getting to double digits in that stat and it came
- 16:32Speaker 1: from every every level. You mentioned. Margus Hunt he knocked
- 16:35Speaker 1: one down at the line of scrimmage, George Evans had
- 16:37Speaker 1: when I think at the linebacker position, Darius Phillips had three,
- 16:40Speaker 1: Mackenzie Alexander had two. They were deflecting a ton of
- 16:44Speaker 1: Ben Roethlisberger's throws. Yeah, they did. William Jackson, you know,
- 16:47Speaker 1: got his hands and he should have had an interception. One.
- 16:50Speaker 1: He'll get a pass broken up, but I mean should
- 16:52Speaker 1: have been an interception, and then you know, a couple
- 16:54Speaker 1: of plays later he has the fourth down problem, the interference.
- 16:57Speaker 1: But Sam Hubbard got his hand on one as well,
- 17:00Speaker 1: you know, as well as Marcus so Um. They were
- 17:02Speaker 1: they were getting their hands on footballs and uh, you know,
- 17:06Speaker 1: I think they were. They were. The coverage was outstanding
- 17:09Speaker 1: and for on and off during the course of the game.
- 17:12Speaker 1: They were really in Ben's head, I mean more so
- 17:14Speaker 1: than I've seen in a long time. It was. He
- 17:17Speaker 1: was definitely bothered by what they were doing. I'm not
- 17:19Speaker 1: sure that he was confused, but I think it was
- 17:22Speaker 1: like wow, I mean, there's just like fly paper. I mean,
- 17:25Speaker 1: they're suffocating us, man, They're smothering us down the football field.
- 17:29Speaker 1: I have nowhere to go with the football. And that's
- 17:31Speaker 1: that's that's not typical Steeler action there. I have no
- 17:36Speaker 1: idea what Mike Brown has been thinking about Zach Taylor's
- 17:40Speaker 1: long term future. But do you think if there was
- 17:44Speaker 1: any inkling of making a change, that his mind might
- 17:48Speaker 1: have been changed tonight? I mean, you look at it.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You look at a scenario like tonight against an organization
- 17:57Speaker 1: that is, you know, the the gold standard of professional football.
- 18:02Speaker 1: You've lost eleven in a row to him, it's on
- 18:05Speaker 1: national television. It could have been a total embarrassment. I
- 18:09Speaker 1: mean last last week's Monday night football game was an
- 18:11Speaker 1: instant classic. This one had the makings of being forgettable
- 18:17Speaker 1: immediately kind of football game. And for them to play
- 18:20Speaker 1: like they did, I think it does mean something to
- 18:22Speaker 1: Mike Brown on national television, and you know, in the
- 18:26Speaker 1: restroom at halftime, Steve Leapy was like, I can't believe this.
- 18:30Speaker 1: You know, that's why you don't bet on these games.
- 18:32Speaker 1: All my stuff, I have for I can't use. All
- 18:35Speaker 1: he had was Pittsburgh stuff in the second half of steven,
- 18:37Speaker 1: you know, and it's all understandable, but I mean everybody
- 18:40Speaker 1: was stunned. I mean all the media guys, national, local
- 18:43Speaker 1: or whatever there. Everybody was stunned. And I mean me too.
- 18:46Speaker 1: There's no way, but I thought the Cincinnati Bengal was
- 18:49Speaker 1: going to hang twenty seven points on the Pittsburgh Steelers
- 18:51Speaker 1: in this football game. I thought they won. It would
- 18:53Speaker 1: be like fourteen ten, seventeen, fourteen, you know, but it was.
- 18:58Speaker 1: It was a very very good football game that they
- 19:01Speaker 1: get short fields on some of those turnovers, took advantage
- 19:05Speaker 1: and get points out of it again kind of reverse
- 19:09Speaker 1: the flip the script on Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh makes you pay
- 19:13Speaker 1: for every turnover. They just make you pay. Dearly Bengals
- 19:16Speaker 1: did it to the Pittsburgh Steelers. And you know, there
- 19:18Speaker 1: was a lull there in the third quarter, Dan three
- 19:20Speaker 1: to three and outs. They go third and eight, three
- 19:22Speaker 1: straight possession like a little boy, now is there going
- 19:25Speaker 1: to be you know, enough time for Pittsburgh to make
- 19:28Speaker 1: the complete comeback. And then the Bengals, you know, snap
- 19:31Speaker 1: out of it and make plays and win the football
- 19:34Speaker 1: game going away, pretty pretty impressive. Well, they didn't want
- 19:37Speaker 1: to score in the third quarter, now, you know, the
- 19:39Speaker 1: Bengals don't like to do that. Yeah, that's right. I mean,
- 19:42Speaker 1: you're right about that. It's it's just incredible. What what
- 19:46Speaker 1: what happens in the third quarter? It is, it's it's
- 19:49Speaker 1: just it's beyond mind boggling. I'll tell you though. When
- 19:52Speaker 1: Pittsburgh came out with the formation they came out with
- 19:54Speaker 1: and spread the field as far as they could with
- 19:56Speaker 1: two wide receivers lined up behind each other in like
- 19:58Speaker 1: double life formations, almost in front of each football team's bench. Boy,
- 20:02Speaker 1: that's a big adjustment and it worked. I mean, they
- 20:05Speaker 1: big play by Claypool and then Ben throws a touchdown
- 20:08Speaker 1: past the very next snap, and I'm thinking, oh boy,
- 20:10Speaker 1: I wonder what else they have up their sleep. But
- 20:12Speaker 1: that was something that you just you run at once,
- 20:14Speaker 1: and it wasn't really a gadget play, but it was
- 20:16Speaker 1: a different look formation. You can make quick adjustments to it.
- 20:19Speaker 1: But I thought for the most part, you know, you
- 20:22Speaker 1: hear all the time, oh the Bengals, man, you know,
- 20:25Speaker 1: they've had halftime leads. But then the other team adjusted
- 20:27Speaker 1: the Bengals never adjust well. I thought in this instance,
- 20:31Speaker 1: they adjusted to adjustments and the whole thing, the whole
- 20:34Speaker 1: thing panned out. Let's talk about the other side from
- 20:37Speaker 1: eleven and ozero to eleven and three and if you
- 20:41Speaker 1: go back to win number eleven, that was the Baltimore
- 20:44Speaker 1: game where I think it was twelve guys for Baltimore.
- 20:47Speaker 1: We're out with COVID, including seven Pro Bowlers. The Steelers
- 20:51Speaker 1: struggle to win that game. They haven't scored twenty points
- 20:54Speaker 1: now in any of their last four games. Are the
- 20:59Speaker 1: Steelers limping to the finish line? I mean, their their
- 21:03Speaker 1: offense looks so different, and everybody's realizing that they are
- 21:07Speaker 1: going to the short intermediate east and west stuff, and
- 21:10Speaker 1: they're aligning their coverages and and crowding. You know, they're
- 21:14Speaker 1: making Pittsburgh playing a closet and it's it's interesting to watch.
- 21:18Speaker 1: And I thought right away when Pittsburgh came out and
- 21:20Speaker 1: Ben rolled out and went deep, they were trying to
- 21:23Speaker 1: make a statement, Okay, this we're not doing that tonight.
- 21:25Speaker 1: You know, you're gonna have to make some adjustments here.
- 21:27Speaker 1: But Ben was not even close and the coverage was good,
- 21:30Speaker 1: so that wasn't a panic type scenario, and they did try,
- 21:35Speaker 1: not even a handful of deep balls through the rest
- 21:37Speaker 1: of the game. And uh lou and Umu was persistent
- 21:41Speaker 1: and staying with what he thought was going to be
- 21:43Speaker 1: the right the right kind of configuration the schematic for
- 21:46Speaker 1: the night, and it paid big, big dividends. Yeah, I
- 21:49Speaker 1: think they're there. They are limping and uh uh yeah,
- 21:53Speaker 1: it's they just offensively, it looks like they're really really
- 21:58Speaker 1: struggling to get it figured out. It really does. So
- 22:01Speaker 1: there's a guy known as Bengal Boy who always does
- 22:04Speaker 1: the great banner on the opposite side of the stadium
- 22:07Speaker 1: from our broadcast booth. The banner tonight says Panay for
- 22:12Speaker 1: your thoughts, a reference to Panay Sewell, the great offensive
- 22:15Speaker 1: line prospect out of Oregon. The great thing about this
- 22:18Speaker 1: victory is that it doesn't drop the Bengals in the
- 22:20Speaker 1: draft order. There's still third, the Jets falling from one
- 22:24Speaker 1: to two after they shocked the Rams on Sunday, an
- 22:27Speaker 1: Owen thirteen team beating a nine and four team. So
- 22:31Speaker 1: Jacksonville has the first pick, the Jets have the second pick,
- 22:33Speaker 1: the Bengals have the third. But now there's a chance
- 22:37Speaker 1: if the Bengals win again, that they would fall out
- 22:39Speaker 1: of the third spot. Carolina, Atlanta, Houston and Philadelphia have
- 22:45Speaker 1: four wins. The Bengals now three ten and one. Yeah,
- 22:48Speaker 1: that's what people are already. I've already gotten a bunch
- 22:50Speaker 1: of texts. They could go to number seven, they could
- 22:52Speaker 1: drop to number seven. What are they thinking? You know?
- 22:54Speaker 1: And it's like, well, you know whatever, you know, maybe
- 22:58Speaker 1: they can still get a good offensive lineman or a
- 23:01Speaker 1: defensive lineman or whatever the case may be with that
- 23:04Speaker 1: with that seventh pick in the draft. But when you
- 23:06Speaker 1: look at it, Dan, it's like, they beat Tennessee and
- 23:10Speaker 1: they beat Pittsburgh here at Paul Brown Stadium, two playoff teams,
- 23:14Speaker 1: two teams that have given other people, you know, difficult time.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Now Pittsburgh's in a little bit of a lull. There's
- 23:21Speaker 1: no question they're not, you know they I don't think
- 23:24Speaker 1: they really were a dominant eleven and old football team anyway,
- 23:28Speaker 1: And now reality is kind of creeping back in. They
- 23:31Speaker 1: could finish eleven and five. I mean, they've got they've
- 23:33Speaker 1: got two two good opponents left. They got Indianapolis and
- 23:36Speaker 1: they have Cleveland. There's no no gimmes there. Both of
- 23:39Speaker 1: those teams are fighting for playoff positioning as well in
- 23:42Speaker 1: seeds and all that, So that would be an interesting
- 23:45Speaker 1: dynamic to go eleven and O and then oh and five.
- 23:47Speaker 1: That would be a tail of two two seasons in
- 23:51Speaker 1: one there. But yeah, I mean to me, uh, if
- 23:57Speaker 1: if you're if you're out there playing football and you're
- 23:59Speaker 1: all they're a coaching football, it is so foreign to
- 24:02Speaker 1: say we're gonna lose this because we want to get
- 24:05Speaker 1: an offensive tackle. Who may be great, who may be
- 24:09Speaker 1: not as great, who may get hurt, who may get whatever.
- 24:12Speaker 1: All you're trying to do is keep your damn job.
- 24:15Speaker 1: And it's a competitive world out there. You know. When
- 24:18Speaker 1: I was a player, I didn't give a damn with
- 24:20Speaker 1: fans thought about draft picks, you know. And I mean
- 24:23Speaker 1: it was like you're just trying to survive, man, I mean,
- 24:26Speaker 1: that's that's that's all there is to it. And it's
- 24:29Speaker 1: easy for somebody from the outside looking in say, oh,
- 24:31Speaker 1: you know, what are you what are you doing? You
- 24:32Speaker 1: can position yourself for this net hell, bro, this is
- 24:36Speaker 1: like dog fight time. It's like survival of the fittest.
- 24:39Speaker 1: It's Darwinism at its finest. You're just trying to survive
- 24:42Speaker 1: and advance for another week. You're not worried about, you know,
- 24:46Speaker 1: draft picks and free agency and all that stuff that
- 24:48Speaker 1: isn't even come close to enter in your mind yet
- 24:50Speaker 1: if you're a player or a coach. I'm reminded a
- 24:53Speaker 1: little bit of two thousand and eight. The Bengals were
- 24:55Speaker 1: won eleven and one with three games to go. They
- 24:57Speaker 1: won the last three, built some moment, then won the division.
- 25:01Speaker 1: In two thousand and nine, I'm not going to say
- 25:02Speaker 1: that I'm not about to say that that's going to happen,
- 25:04Speaker 1: But the point I want to make is they were
- 25:06Speaker 1: one eleven and one, they won their last three, they
- 25:09Speaker 1: dropped in the draft order. They could have had the
- 25:11Speaker 1: second pick, they fell to the sixth, wound up taking
- 25:14Speaker 1: Andre Smith. The five guys that were taken ahead of them,
- 25:19Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford went number one overall. He's had a good career.
- 25:23Speaker 1: You couldn't even name picks two, three, four and five.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I'm sure at the time they all seemed like they
- 25:29Speaker 1: were going to be ten time Pro Bowlers. None of
- 25:32Speaker 1: those guys between Matthew Stafford and Andre Smith did a thing.
- 25:36Speaker 1: No I agree. I mean, the draft is an imperfect science,
- 25:38Speaker 1: to say the least. But this guy, Cane Sewell, looks
- 25:44Speaker 1: like he's he's about as scientifically a perfect as you
- 25:47Speaker 1: can be. I mean, the guy, the guy is a freak.
- 25:49Speaker 1: It's it's almost like a can't miss you know, can't
- 25:52Speaker 1: miss target on him. But I've seen offensive lineman as
- 25:55Speaker 1: they thought, look at Mandridge already thought, you know, I mean,
- 26:00Speaker 1: so you win some, you lose some, and uh, and
- 26:03Speaker 1: that's the way it goes in terms of the draft.
- 26:06Speaker 1: But um, it's just it's it's great to get that
- 26:10Speaker 1: the Pittsburgh Steeler weight off your shoulders, you know, get
- 26:14Speaker 1: it off your back. I mean that that thing was
- 26:16Speaker 1: starting to get i mean too heavy. It was almost
- 26:20Speaker 1: almost unbearable. And I can't imagine how happy that locker
- 26:24Speaker 1: room was. I mean I remember, you know, I remember
- 26:27Speaker 1: locker room celebrations. I mean the biggest locker room celebration
- 26:30Speaker 1: that it'll always be in my mind. Obviously, it was
- 26:33Speaker 1: the out of the Freezer Bowl when we beat the
- 26:35Speaker 1: Chargers going to the Super Bowl, and I was like,
- 26:37Speaker 1: I you know, it was like a dream. It's like
- 26:41Speaker 1: this can't be happening. Plus I was frozen stiff every everybody.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Everybody was like a popsicle trying to thaw out. But
- 26:48Speaker 1: so there were there are a lot of things going
- 26:50Speaker 1: on there um, but yeah, that it. There's like Tiger
- 26:55Speaker 1: Tiger Johnson said to me one time, he said, you know,
- 26:58Speaker 1: do this as long as you can, because you're never
- 27:01Speaker 1: ever going to have feelings in any other occupation in
- 27:06Speaker 1: the world than you're going to have in this one.
- 27:08Speaker 1: The friendships, the enemies, the hate, the love, the physicality,
- 27:14Speaker 1: he said, on a day to day basis. Man, he said,
- 27:16Speaker 1: it's it's a heck of a ride, and you got
- 27:18Speaker 1: to think about doing it as long as you can.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And he was right. Old Tiger was right, man. It's
- 27:23Speaker 1: it's unbelievable. Christmas came four days early. Christmas came four
- 27:27Speaker 1: days early. Ben oh ho ho Ben Up. Next, the
- 27:35Speaker 1: final road game of the year is the Bengals head
- 27:37Speaker 1: to Houston to face the Texans. Houston is four and
- 27:40Speaker 1: ten after a seven point loss to the Colts on Sunday.
- 27:44Speaker 1: The Texans have one eight of the last nine meetings
- 27:47Speaker 1: with the Bengals, including a pair of playoff wins. The
- 27:51Speaker 1: Bengals Booth Podcast is presented by bud Light Seltzer. It's
- 27:55Speaker 1: light and refreshing with a hint of fruit flavor. Now
- 27:59Speaker 1: time for this week's fun Facts segment, where you get
- 28:01Speaker 1: to know the person under the pads. Time for some
- 28:04Speaker 1: fun facts with linebacker Josh Bines, a native of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Was football always your sport or were you one of
- 28:13Speaker 1: these guys who was a standout and everything you ever? Did?
- 28:17Speaker 1: You know, I'm gonna standout and everything I did? Actually,
- 28:21Speaker 1: I was actually really good in basketball, and also I
- 28:25Speaker 1: ran track in high school as well, so I was,
- 28:27Speaker 1: you know, a multiport athlete for sure, and that was
- 28:30Speaker 1: pretty decent in all of them. Your grandfather was a linebacker,
- 28:34Speaker 1: Your dad was a linebacker. Did you have an understanding
- 28:38Speaker 1: of xs and o's at a really early age as
- 28:41Speaker 1: a result, Yeah, I would definitely say so. My dad
- 28:45Speaker 1: was very pivotal in that point in my life, especially
- 28:47Speaker 1: as I got older into high school and linebacker was
- 28:50Speaker 1: definitely my position. He definitely took the time and talk
- 28:54Speaker 1: to me about simple things, especially talking about just the
- 28:56Speaker 1: simplest controlling a defense, being that leader and a lot
- 29:00Speaker 1: of those things obviously was natural to me, but just
- 29:03Speaker 1: the simple things about playing the position and how to
- 29:05Speaker 1: see and had the vision and when you back there.
- 29:09Speaker 1: And my dad was very pivotal, you know, in that
- 29:11Speaker 1: time frame of my life, and obviously I took some
- 29:14Speaker 1: of what he taught me and ran with it along
- 29:16Speaker 1: the way into the NFL. We're doing fun facts with
- 29:19Speaker 1: Josh Bines. You are a highly talented recruit. Did you
- 29:22Speaker 1: enjoy the attention and do you have a great recruiting story.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I don't know if I have a great recruiting story
- 29:29Speaker 1: per se, but it was a lot, you know. I
- 29:32Speaker 1: honestly was just playing football because I loved it. And
- 29:35Speaker 1: my brother was a really good quarterback, so he was
- 29:36Speaker 1: getting recruited a year before. And I've seen all the recruits,
- 29:39Speaker 1: the coaches and everybody coming to the house to bring
- 29:42Speaker 1: him to the schools, you know, the Louisville, Florida, any
- 29:47Speaker 1: school you can name, and and of course, you know,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I'm sitting there in my mind like, you know, hopefully
- 29:51Speaker 1: it's like that for me. Yeah, it's my big brother
- 29:53Speaker 1: going through. I'm hope it's like that. And then I
- 29:55Speaker 1: ended up ended up turning out to be like crazy,
- 29:59Speaker 1: like I had coaches every week, my phone blow up.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Um one thing I do remember vividly. It's just coming
- 30:04Speaker 1: thinking about this now is closer to call all kinds
- 30:07Speaker 1: of times of the night, and my mom, of course
- 30:09Speaker 1: we're sleep and my mama answered the phone and she
- 30:12Speaker 1: was just yelling like, don't call my house this lad,
- 30:14Speaker 1: it's too late. He's sleep. He got school tomorrow and
- 30:17Speaker 1: hangled the paul because it was it was like it
- 30:20Speaker 1: was a lie. It was like literally, recruiting was two
- 30:23Speaker 1: times crazier from my brother went to me because my
- 30:27Speaker 1: recruiting level was about higher. So you chose Auburn. You
- 30:31Speaker 1: were recruited by an assistant coach named Eddie Grant who's
- 30:34Speaker 1: now the offensive coordinator at the University of Kentucky, and
- 30:38Speaker 1: your head coach when you signed with Auburn is about
- 30:41Speaker 1: to become a US senator, Tommy Tubberville Ille. What was
- 30:45Speaker 1: your reaction to seeing coach tubs run for and win
- 30:49Speaker 1: a Senate seat. I don't know. I just couldn't believe
- 30:52Speaker 1: it when I seen it on Twitter and online and stuff,
- 30:55Speaker 1: and I was like, Tommy Tuberville is going up a senator?
- 30:57Speaker 1: What is going on? I just remember him being my coach.
- 31:01Speaker 1: What thirteen years ago when I first came to Auburn.
- 31:04Speaker 1: Now he's the Senator of Alabama. That's crazy. We're doing
- 31:09Speaker 1: fun facts with Josh Bines. While you were at Auburn,
- 31:12Speaker 1: you met a volleyball player named Brianna Johnson who became
- 31:16Speaker 1: your wife. How did the romance begin? Oh, my gods,
- 31:19Speaker 1: the romance. It was just that was my best friend
- 31:22Speaker 1: honestly in college. We hung out every single day from
- 31:26Speaker 1: day one. She was literally one of the first couple
- 31:28Speaker 1: people I met on campus, and that summer before the
- 31:33Speaker 1: summer of two thousand and seven, and just we became
- 31:36Speaker 1: close and we stayed close throughout those whole the entire
- 31:40Speaker 1: you know, Tim, we was in Auburn and all of
- 31:42Speaker 1: a sudden, you know, we just I was like, hey,
- 31:44Speaker 1: you know, you know, can we make this work as
- 31:47Speaker 1: you know, me and you? And obviously we did at
- 31:50Speaker 1: this point and we've been married now six over six
- 31:52Speaker 1: years now, and that's the best decision, definitely I ever made.
- 31:56Speaker 1: You have three sons, they have athletic DNA. Yes, I
- 32:02Speaker 1: got three boys, one is ten five and a nine
- 32:05Speaker 1: month old right now, and yes, my boys there there
- 32:09Speaker 1: everything to me and they right now, my older son's
- 32:12Speaker 1: playing baseball. Actually, both my boys are are doing baseball,
- 32:15Speaker 1: and and obviously if it wasn't COVID right now, I'm old,
- 32:18Speaker 1: it is probably doing football this fall. But hopefully we
- 32:20Speaker 1: get through that and he can get back to that.
- 32:23Speaker 1: And he played basketball as well, so they have definitely
- 32:26Speaker 1: have some athletic DNA to live live after. But I'm
- 32:29Speaker 1: just happy to whatever they decide to do, I'm all
- 32:32Speaker 1: for it. Josh, you had a great career at Auburn.
- 32:35Speaker 1: You earned all SEC honors, and yet you weren't drafted.
- 32:39Speaker 1: How much did that hurt? It was tough for me.
- 32:42Speaker 1: It was hard because you know, I feel like, um,
- 32:44Speaker 1: my junior year, I was definitely um, you know, in
- 32:47Speaker 1: a position to be drafted, and I thought about leaving earlier.
- 32:50Speaker 1: My junior year I went undrafted, and and it just,
- 32:55Speaker 1: you know, it should propelled me to mentally just go
- 32:57Speaker 1: out there and just do what I have to do
- 32:58Speaker 1: to survive and make a team, especially in Baltimore. I
- 33:01Speaker 1: was the biggest goal, was just trying to prove myself
- 33:03Speaker 1: that belong in this league and prove that, you know,
- 33:06Speaker 1: I could play this game for a long period of time.
- 33:08Speaker 1: We're chatting with Josh Bines. So you did sign with
- 33:10Speaker 1: the Ravens as a college free agent. They let you
- 33:13Speaker 1: go at the end of training camp before putting it
- 33:14Speaker 1: on the practice squad. But that didn't happen for a
- 33:17Speaker 1: couple of months. What did you do in between? I
- 33:21Speaker 1: was looking for a job, like you know, like normal people,
- 33:24Speaker 1: you know, trying to figure out my next phase. I
- 33:26Speaker 1: was actually the day I signed with Baltimore, I had
- 33:30Speaker 1: got an interview with Kaplin University as academic visor. And
- 33:35Speaker 1: literally that day I came home, I got a phone call,
- 33:39Speaker 1: still had my suit on everything. I got a phone
- 33:41Speaker 1: call from Azzi. Gazzi knew something. He told me. He said,
- 33:44Speaker 1: you don't gotta wor out. You gonna do anything you
- 33:45Speaker 1: want to bring you back to Baltimore. And I was
- 33:47Speaker 1: just in tears. I couldn't believe it because I was like,
- 33:50Speaker 1: I thought it was over my life, you know. I
- 33:52Speaker 1: was like, man, I made the decision. I'm gonna move forward.
- 33:54Speaker 1: I'm still gonna work out of sub stage shape. But
- 33:56Speaker 1: I was moving forward my life in and I'll be
- 33:58Speaker 1: It's crazy enough that one called lead me to ten
- 34:01Speaker 1: years later. So you were about to take a job
- 34:03Speaker 1: as an academic advisor, and Ozzy called that day. Yeah,
- 34:07Speaker 1: same day, literally got home. All I had, all I
- 34:10Speaker 1: did was loosing my tie, and all of a sudden
- 34:12Speaker 1: Ozzy be on the phone, on the phone with Ozzy,
- 34:14Speaker 1: and I just started boom, crying and getting and all
- 34:16Speaker 1: of a sudden went from that to all right and
- 34:18Speaker 1: let me get ready in pack. And but I honestly,
- 34:20Speaker 1: I wasn't all the way all the way through it,
- 34:21Speaker 1: because I told you, I can't remember her name exactly now,
- 34:25Speaker 1: but I told her to the person interview with me,
- 34:27Speaker 1: and I told her, I said, let's just hold the
- 34:28Speaker 1: job for me and just in case, because this is
- 34:30Speaker 1: this game isn't forever, so I might need it in
- 34:32Speaker 1: an off season, maybe in a few weeks, and I'll
- 34:34Speaker 1: never forget. She told me, She told me God has
- 34:36Speaker 1: another plan for you. You won't have to worry about this,
- 34:39Speaker 1: and you go ahead and keep doing your thing. You're
- 34:41Speaker 1: gonna be in a You're gonna be in the NFL
- 34:42Speaker 1: for a long time. I mean I literally talked to
- 34:45Speaker 1: her that interview and for her to say that, you know, um,
- 34:50Speaker 1: ten years ago and it's still it's like you said,
- 34:52Speaker 1: I'm still playing. It's just it's just it's just it's
- 34:54Speaker 1: just crazy and that's just guys will just guys will
- 34:57Speaker 1: over me. We're doing fun facts with joh Spines. Your
- 35:00Speaker 1: second NFL season ended with a Super Bowl ring, but
- 35:04Speaker 1: it started with a very serious injury. What happened, Yeah,
- 35:09Speaker 1: so in practice in training camp, we're in our first
- 35:13Speaker 1: or second padded practice and guy hit me in the
- 35:17Speaker 1: baging gold line, live gold line, right in the middle
- 35:20Speaker 1: of my back. And I get up and I just,
- 35:22Speaker 1: you know, I'm thinking, now, I'm okay, she got hit
- 35:24Speaker 1: in the back, and all of a sudden that the
- 35:27Speaker 1: right side I believe it was, wasn't My leg wasn't
- 35:29Speaker 1: really moving. So I ended up going to training room.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And once I went to training room and put some
- 35:34Speaker 1: ice in my bag and it was over with and
- 35:36Speaker 1: I couldn't really walk. It was so much pain or
- 35:39Speaker 1: I didn't know what was wrong, And and my fiance say, well, now, wife.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Of course, at the time I'm calling her, she's you know,
- 35:46Speaker 1: trying to figure out what's gonna want to need to do.
- 35:47Speaker 1: And I told I said, it might not be the
- 35:49Speaker 1: big of a deal. And then obviously I do the
- 35:51Speaker 1: X rays and do everything else. And if I didn't
- 35:54Speaker 1: tell me, oh, I had fractured my lord trainverse processors
- 35:58Speaker 1: and I was like what it's like, yeah, your lower
- 36:00Speaker 1: back and I was like, broke my back. I was
- 36:02Speaker 1: like yeah. So it was crazy because I was like,
- 36:04Speaker 1: am I still gonna play? As all my mind was
- 36:06Speaker 1: like am I still be able to play football? And
- 36:08Speaker 1: as it's over for me? So that was my biggest
- 36:11Speaker 1: obstacle during that whole time mentally trying to figure out
- 36:13Speaker 1: I'm still gonna play this game. So broken back is
- 36:16Speaker 1: not an injured shoulder. You're not upping about doing your thing.
- 36:20Speaker 1: I mean you're laid out. How bad was that? Oh?
- 36:24Speaker 1: It was bad. It was bad. And like I said,
- 36:26Speaker 1: luckily I have have my my then at toime fiance
- 36:29Speaker 1: and my now wife. She was there all the way through.
- 36:33Speaker 1: She um and I couldn't even get out of the bathroom,
- 36:36Speaker 1: get out the bed to go to the bathroom. So
- 36:38Speaker 1: I had a big old jug next to my bed
- 36:40Speaker 1: just so I could turn sideways to use the bathroom.
- 36:42Speaker 1: I know it's too much affation, but I just all
- 36:44Speaker 1: I had. I couldn't do anything. It was painful, and
- 36:47Speaker 1: you know I was I was trying and trying. She
- 36:49Speaker 1: would get my ice and try to take care of
- 36:51Speaker 1: me and she You know, when you have somebody that
- 36:54Speaker 1: does that all for you, and those and those moments
- 36:56Speaker 1: when you're down and trying to figure things out and
- 36:58Speaker 1: what's going on, you know, I'm just blessed to have
- 37:01Speaker 1: someone like that in my life, still to this day
- 37:03Speaker 1: and for the rest of my life. And that's why
- 37:05Speaker 1: I said, that's the greatest decision I ever made, is
- 37:07Speaker 1: Mary and my wife. So you got healthy. The Ravens
- 37:10Speaker 1: made it to the Super Bowl. They beat the forty
- 37:13Speaker 1: nine ers, and you made a special team's tackle that
- 37:16Speaker 1: ended the game. And just to set the scene for
- 37:19Speaker 1: people that don't remember, the Ravens took an intentional safety
- 37:22Speaker 1: at the end of the game and had to do
- 37:24Speaker 1: the free kick. They kick it to the very dangerous
- 37:28Speaker 1: Ted Gin Junior, and he was going. He ran about
- 37:32Speaker 1: thirty yards before you got him to the ground, right, yes, yes,
- 37:36Speaker 1: And it was nervous because it's ted again and tied again.
- 37:39Speaker 1: At that time, was one of the most dangerous at turners.
- 37:41Speaker 1: And we was like, all right, we thought somebody would
- 37:43Speaker 1: get him early. But now he started going to the
- 37:45Speaker 1: sideline and obviously when he got into my grass, I
- 37:48Speaker 1: just slung him down. Ball came out and he just
- 37:50Speaker 1: knew it was game over. And I think it's just
- 37:52Speaker 1: crazy to start the year that I had, I couldn't
- 37:54Speaker 1: really do anything, you know, with my back, and all
- 37:58Speaker 1: of a sudden the years to start and I still,
- 38:00Speaker 1: you know, getting through my injury finally even a practice too.
- 38:03Speaker 1: From practice actually starting that year to trying to you know,
- 38:07Speaker 1: starting my first NFL game, making playing a lot more,
- 38:10Speaker 1: and then go from that to actually making last type
- 38:11Speaker 1: of the super Bowl. It's just it's just a crazy
- 38:14Speaker 1: moment and I can't really as just as suddenly you know,
- 38:17Speaker 1: you're writing a storybook or something, just you know, took
- 38:19Speaker 1: my kids, hopefully as they get older, and they were
- 38:22Speaker 1: thinking somebody else when it's really just me, all right.
- 38:26Speaker 1: A few wild card questions to wrap up fun facts
- 38:28Speaker 1: with Josh Bines. When's the last time you had short hair? Oh?
- 38:33Speaker 1: Short hair? The last time? Probably short hair. I had
- 38:35Speaker 1: to be an elementary And the only reason I got
- 38:38Speaker 1: short hair is because I was as smart as I was.
- 38:41Speaker 1: I got it had I got in trouble for maybe
- 38:43Speaker 1: getting in trouble at school, maybe a little angry problems
- 38:45Speaker 1: here and there. Well, but so I got a couple
- 38:48Speaker 1: of fights in here and there. My dad was like, Okay,
- 38:50Speaker 1: so we're gonna keep doing that. So eventually cut my
- 38:52Speaker 1: hair like really low to almost looking bald, and I
- 38:55Speaker 1: was embarrassed, and of course my mom didn't let it
- 38:57Speaker 1: have to get so I've always pretty much for us
- 39:00Speaker 1: outside of that. I think that's why been third grade.
- 39:02Speaker 1: But since that time, I've always from a little kid
- 39:04Speaker 1: all the way, I've always had hair frow to the
- 39:07Speaker 1: Jerry curl place back in the day, to braids and
- 39:10Speaker 1: then bradies went to what I have now Jerry's for
- 39:12Speaker 1: the last thirteen or so years. All right, final fun
- 39:15Speaker 1: fact for Josh Bines. If you could meet anybody in history, athlete, entertainer, statesman, whatever, Oh,
- 39:26Speaker 1: who would that person be? That's so hard, But honestly,
- 39:29Speaker 1: it has to be Obama at this point, it has
- 39:31Speaker 1: to be Obama. Obama is the greatest and and what
- 39:35Speaker 1: he represents and him him Michelle have a great connection
- 39:39Speaker 1: and what they have inspires even me and my wife.
- 39:42Speaker 1: And when you have that bond with someone else as
- 39:45Speaker 1: unbreakable and they show it and you can tell as
- 39:48Speaker 1: authentic and what he represent as a man and especially
- 39:51Speaker 1: lead his nation is during his presidency. Is just awesome
- 39:54Speaker 1: and definitely be a person I would love to meet.
- 39:56Speaker 1: You're off the hot seat, appreciate your time. Thank you
- 40:00Speaker 1: very much, and best of luck the rest of the year.
