- 0:07The New York Mets faced the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field for opening day on Tuesday, April 7, 1970.
- 0:14The Mets were world champions after shocking the league with a World Series win over the Orioles in 1969.
- 0:20They were managed by Gil Hodges in his third season with New York.
- 0:23The Pirates were led by veteran manager Danny Murtaugh in his tenth season as manager of the Pirates.
- 0:29From 1961 to 1964 Murtaugh had only one season over 500, so he stepped down as manager and moved up to the Pirates' front office as a key assistant in charge of evaluating players.
- 0:40Five years later, while aware of the abundance of talent in the Pittsburgh system, Murtaugh asked to reclaim the managing job after Larry Shepard was fired during the last week of the 1969 season.
- 0:51This audio recording is from the New York Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Murphy, Ralph Keiner and Lindsay Nelson.
- 1:21The playing field, slightly damp but in pretty good condition.
- 1:25The starting pitchers of this opening day game for the New York Mets, the Cy Young Award winner, their ace right-hander, who last year won 25 and lost only 7, Tom Seaver.
- 1:38And on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates in today's opener, also their ace right-hander, a 16-game winner last season, right-hander Steve Blass.
- 1:48And our national anthem sung by Brenda Lee.
- 2:18The perilous fight, the wild fight we watched, were so gallantly streaming.
- 2:33As the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
- 2:53Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave, o'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
- 3:23The roar of the crowd at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh following our national anthem was sung by recording star Brenda Lee.
- 3:33Overcast skies, 48 degree temperatures. It is about time to play ball.
- 3:39And for the starting lineups and batting orders for today's opening game, our colleague, Mr. Ralph Keiner.
- 3:45All right, Bob Murphy, and hi everyone. And as we get set for the lineup, Mrs. Hannes Wagner is going to throw out the first ball here at Forbes Field.
- 3:54Of course, in memory of one of the greatest ball players of all time, Hannes Wagner.
- 4:00For the New York Mets, the leadoff batter will be Tommy Agee in center field.
- 4:04Batting second at shortstop, Bud Harrelson. Batting third and playing third base, Joe Foer.
- 4:09Batting fourth in left field, Cleon Jones. Batting fifth at first base, Art Shamsky.
- 4:15Batting sixth in right field, Ron Cebota. Batting seventh and playing second base, Wayne Garrett.
- 4:21Batting eighth and catching Jerry Grote and the pitcher, Tom Siever.
- 4:26Batting ninth for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The leadoff batter will be the center fielder, Mattie Allou.
- 4:33Batting second and playing third base, Richie Hebner. Batting third in right field, Roberto Calenti.
- 4:40Batting fourth in left field, Willie Sargeal. Batting fifth at first base, Al Oliver.
- 4:45Batting sixth and playing shortstop, Gene Alley. Batting seventh to catcher, Jerry May.
- 4:51Batting eighth and playing second base, Bill Mazurowski. And the pitcher, Steve Glass. Batting ninth.
- 4:58Last year, the Mets won the World Series and in the regular season they won 100 ball games, lost 62.
- 5:07Rocks with a record of 88 and 74. They were 12 games back in third place in the Eastern Division in the National League.
- 5:15So here today, the final opening ever to be played here at Forbes Field, 61.
- 5:22Opening days, this field built back in 1909. Pittsburgh Pirates are scheduled to move into the new ballpark later on this season.
- 5:30So here today, before just about a capacity crowd, we'll be seeing the last opener here in this historic ballpark.
- 5:39Now at home plate, World Championship manager, Gil Hodges, going over the grounds rules with Danny Murtaugh, third time manager of the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 5:51Out there, Bill Mazurowski, the captain of the Pirates. The home plate umpire today will be Augie Donatelli.
- 6:00At first base, calling the plays there, Chris Palakoutis. The umpire at second base will be John Kibler.
- 6:06And the umpire at third base will be Dave Davidson.
- 6:11A field of mentions here at Forbes Field, 300 feet down the right field line, going out to 375 and just about straightaway right field.
- 6:19It's 436, the shade to the right of center field. 457, a shade to the left of center field.
- 6:26406, and left center field, and 360, down the left field line.
- 6:32We're still waiting here at Forbes Field as they continue to go over the grounds rules.
- 6:39Gil Hodges at this moment, pointing down toward the right field line.
- 6:43In right field, going from the 300 foot mark on the foul line out to 375, there's an extension of the wall, a high screen.
- 6:51And balls off that screen, of course, are in play over the top of the screen, a home run.
- 6:57And now the Pittsburgh Pirates are taking the field.
- 7:00The Pittsburgh Pirates have taken the field. Steve Glass going out to the mound.
- 7:12The Pirates, after opening up here with the Mets today and their other scheduled game on Thursday night, will be moving on to Philadelphia.
- 7:21They'll be playing the Phillies in Philadelphia over the weekend, the 10th, 11th, and 12th.
- 7:26And then they come in to play the Mets on the 14th for the Mets home opener.
- 7:31Pirates are rated very highly this year by most experts.
- 7:35They have tremendous power, they have good speed, and they're hoping that Gene Alley and Bill Mazurowski,
- 7:41their double play combination at short and second, will have a comeback year.
- 7:46They feel that if they do, those two can have a comeback year, they'll be a very strong ball club.
- 7:52They have a doubtful pitching set up, relying mainly on Steve Glass, Bob Moose, Doc Ellis, Bob Veal, as their big man.
- 8:05Bob Moose currently is in doing two weeks of service duty, so he will not be available for this series,
- 8:12and will not be available against the Mets in New York.
- 8:16In the bullpen, they have acquired Twiggy Hardenstein, they figure on him, Bruce Dal Kenton,
- 8:27and right now Danny Murtaugh, talking with his catcher, Jerry May.
- 8:31Danny Sengin was scheduled to start, but he has a slight injury, so Jerry May was picked as the opening day catcher.
- 8:39Mets are sitting back with their strong arm catcher, Jerry Grody.
- 8:51Now the throw on down to second base, Bill Mazurowski with the throw, over to Gene Alley,
- 8:57the shortstop, to Richie Hebner to the third baseman, and now the ball back to the mound to Jerry May,
- 9:03and Tommy Agee steps in the batter's box, and we're all set to start the 1970 season, and here for the play-by-play.
- 9:10Bob Murphy.
- 9:11Okay, Ralph, Tommy Agee leading off against right-hander Steve Glass.
- 9:16Tommy, as the leadoff batter for the New York Mets last year, led the team in runs batted in with 76.
- 9:23He led on the power departments with 26 home runs.
- 9:26Tommy hit 271 and was a tremendous contributor as the Mets won everything.
- 9:33A foul ball hit back upstairs, and the new season is underway.
- 9:39On the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates, their eighth right-hander, Steve Glass.
- 9:45Glass has a lifetime record against the New York Mets of six wins and three losses.
- 9:50Last year, he won two and lost one. Now the right-hander's pitch low and outside, one ball, one strike.
- 9:57In the defense for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Al Oliver is playing first.
- 10:02Captain Bill Mazurowski is in second. Gene Alley is the shortstop, and Richie Hebner is playing third.
- 10:09And a high fly ball sliced right down the right field line. Will it stay fair? It is foul.
- 10:15Back into the crowd, a foul ball. And Tommy Agee did not miss a home run by very much.
- 10:22Down the line is 300 feet to the screen. A ball over the screen is a home run. Against the screen, it is in play.
- 10:31In the outfield for the Pirates, and they certainly have one of the best outfields put together in many years,
- 10:37Willie Starjol, Matty Allou, the center fielder, and a round and right, Roberto Clemente.
- 10:44Here's the pitch on the way to Tommy Agee foul. Back to the screen, no play.
- 10:49For Gil Hedges, Yogi Berra on the coaching lines at first, Eddie Yost is on the lines at third.
- 10:55Pitching coach Rube Walker, working in the dugout with Gil, and Joe Pignatano taking care of the bullpen.
- 11:02Here's the pitch to Tommy, a little scubbler down the third baseline, picking it up as the catcher of May.
- 11:07The throw, not in time, and Tommy Agee beats it out for an infield hit.
- 11:13He took a big swing, and he topped a slow roller up the third baseline.
- 11:18By the time Jerry May could pick it up and throw hard to Al Oliver, it was too late.
- 11:24A swinging bunt for Tommy Agee.
- 11:30Bud Harrelson, switch hitting shortstop, will bat left against right-hander Steve Blass.
- 11:40Last year, Blass was 27 years old, won 16 and lost 10.
- 11:47Now Hebner is in close at third, Bud Harrelson the batter. Here's the pitch on the way.
- 11:52Low and outside, ball one.
- 11:55Veteran Augie Donatelli umpiring behind the plate.
- 11:58Chris Pelikoutis is at first, John Kibler at second, and Satch Davidson is the umpire at third.
- 12:06Overcast guys, 48-degree temperatures.
- 12:10And a throw to first by Steve Blass is not in time.
- 12:14No game tomorrow. The Mets and Pirates play Thursday night here in Pittsburgh.
- 12:19The Mets then will fly to St. Louis for a weekend series.
- 12:23Up goes the leg, down comes the arm. Low and inside, and Harrelson lays off two balls and no strikes.
- 12:30Buddy opening the season about 15 pounds heavier than he closed the season last year.
- 12:36He wound up at about 145 pounds.
- 12:39And he starts the new season closer to 160.
- 12:44Oliver holds against the runner Tommy Agee. The 2-0 delivery is headed in the air to center field.
- 12:49Manny Allou coming in one on, and now Joe Foy makes his debut in the National League and with the New York Mets.
- 12:56Foy put together a solid spring training.
- 12:59Gil Hodges and the coaches were satisfied with his play, and they feel he'll make a lot of contributions to the Mets this year.
- 13:06Joe Foy. He had the speed to steal 36 bases with Kansas City last year.
- 13:12And he led the Kansas City Royals in various hitting departments, including runs batted in.
- 13:17Foy, a right-hand batter, hits out of an overly closed tent.
- 13:22Now Blass up in pitching position.
- 13:25He throws the runner, hit and run, ground ball hit toward the hole, up with the ball, it's Hebner.
- 13:29He throws the first base in time for the out.
- 13:31He wanted to make a play a second. He juggled the ball just for a flash.
- 13:35Had to give that idea up and go on to first base in time for the out.
- 13:43That's where playing hit and run on the 3-1 delivery, and now Cleon Jones is the batter.
- 13:48Cleon coming off of a great year.
- 13:51Tip 340, third highest batting average in the National League.
- 13:57Art Shamsky, another 300 hitter, comes out on deck.
- 14:03Cleon is hoping to be able to duplicate the kind of year he had last season, perhaps even be a better power hitter.
- 14:12Cleon, a line-drive type hitter.
- 14:16Now the Parrots have the infield.
- 14:21A shade to left against Cleon, with Masurowski playing a very deep second and pulled over toward second base.
- 14:28The pitch by Steve Blass lined in the air to right field.
- 14:31Clemente racing at full speed.
- 14:33It's over his head, bouncing off the wall, a base hit.
- 14:35Around third and scoring, Tommy Agee, and Cleon goes into second with a run-scoring double.
- 14:43Cleon Jones, his first time at bat in a new campaign, gathers an RBI with a double over the head of Roberto Clemente.
- 14:53Well, Ralph, that's the way to start a new baseball season.
- 14:56No doubt about that ball being hit well.
- 14:58First pitch, line-drive to right, and the Mets in front won nothing.
- 15:03Now Art Shamsky.
- 15:05Art had a very courageous and outstanding season last year, bothered by an ailing back during the spring.
- 15:13He returned to the minor leagues, he fought his way back, and wound up hitting 300.
- 15:17Left-hand hitter, and a line-drive that is going to be over Masurowski's head, a base hit.
- 15:22Cleon will try and score.
- 15:24Clemoni's throw is into first base.
- 15:26The run is in.
- 15:27Now Shamsky sliding to second, and he's safe.
- 15:31Clemoni threw in behind Art Shamsky, and it's backfire.
- 15:36And Shamsky never broke stride.
- 15:39Oliver's throw across the second base was wide, and so Shamsky winds up on second base.
- 15:46A run-scoring hit for Art Shamsky.
- 15:48The Mets now lead 2-0 here in the first inning, and we'll wait for the official score.
- 15:54Clemoni, instead of throwing home, threw the ball in behind Art Shamsky.
- 15:59I wouldn't be a bit surprised, Bob, that Gil Hodges alerted the Mets to that play,
- 16:03because Clemoni likes to throw behind the runner at first base,
- 16:05and the only way to beat it is to keep on going.
- 16:07If you come back, you're going to be out.
- 16:09And Shamsky did just that, and did not fall into the trap.
- 16:13Ron Swabota takes a curve by Blass of the knees for a call strike.
- 16:19Two runs are in on three hits here in the first inning off Steve Blass.
- 16:25For the time being, we'll score the single for Shamsky and a run batted in and second on the throw.
- 16:30No error has been flashed.
- 16:34Now Blass, up in pitching position, delivers low and outside one ball, one strike to Ron Swabota.
- 16:41Leon Jones and Art Shamsky have each driven a run in.
- 16:48Mets would like to make Mets baseball history by winning their first opening game ever here this afternoon.
- 16:54Pittsburgh has had an outstanding record in opening day games.
- 16:57Ground ball hit toward the middle. To his left is Gene Alley, the shortstop.
- 17:00He's up with it, and he throws to Oliver, the side is up.
- 17:05Two runs, three hits, no errors, one left on.
- 17:09And the score in the middle of the first inning, the New York Mets 2 and the Pittsburgh Pirates coming to bat.
- 17:18Last of any number one, and the Pirates now will be hitting against Tom Siever.
- 17:24Tom starts the new campaign riding a 10-game winning streak.
- 17:29He won his last 10 decisions in the regular season last year.
- 17:33Matty Alou had 231 base hits last year, more base hits than any player in the major leagues.
- 17:40Matty's lifetime batting average now is up to 312 after four good years in a row at Pittsburgh.
- 17:45And Siever's first delivery is low ball one.
- 17:48Jerry Grote behind the plate. In the infield, Art Shamsky is swaying first.
- 17:53Wayne Garrett at second. Bud Harrelson is short. Joe Foy is a third.
- 17:58Inside at low ball two.
- 18:01Ken Boswell would have been in the starting lineup, but he has been away doing military duty,
- 18:05and Gill wants him to get a good workout in before going into the lineup.
- 18:09Leon Jones on left. Tani Agee is the center fielder, and Ron Swaboda is around and right.
- 18:15Now Siever out of his windup, the 2-0 delivery.
- 18:18Inside ball three.
- 18:22Last year against the Pirates, Tom Siever won three and lost none.
- 18:27He has a lifetime record against Pittsburgh of five wins and three losses.
- 18:32And a strike on the outside corner to Matty Alou. It's three and one.
- 18:35Matty does not walk very much for a leadoff batter.
- 18:38As a matter of fact, he had 698 official times at bat last year.
- 18:44The 3-0 delivery calls strike on the outside corner three and two.
- 18:52Their opener is underway in Philadelphia.
- 18:54The Cubs did not score on the first inning off Chris Short.
- 18:59Fouled, back of stairs, no play.
- 19:02In the game of Philadelphia, Ferguson Jenkins against Chris Short.
- 19:06The Astros are on the west coast playing the Giants at Candlestick Park.
- 19:10The last report, Juan Marichal would not be able to start.
- 19:13Atlanta at San Diego tonight, Cincinnati at Dodger Stadium tonight.
- 19:183-2 delivery. Ground ball, base hit. Down the right field line, going into the corner.
- 19:22Ron Swaboda chasing the ball into the corner.
- 19:25Matty Alou will go into second base with a double.
- 19:35Last year, Matty Alou led the National League in two base hits with 41, and he has started off again.
- 19:43Matty Alou hitting a 3-2 pitch, a hard grounder, between Chamsky and the line and down into the right field corner.
- 19:51Now, Richie Hebner is the batter for the Pittsburgh Parrots.
- 19:54Hebner coming off of a rookie season that's drawing at 300.
- 19:58He nailed down a 300 batting average on the final day of the season.
- 20:02Now, Siever, up in pitching position, delivers way inside, brushing Hebner back from the plate.
- 20:10New York in front, 2-0, Parrots hitting last of the first inning.
- 20:17Don Leppard on the coaching lines at first, Frank Osiak at third.
- 20:23Roberto Clemente, the on-deck batter.
- 20:28Now, Siever, pitching from the stretch, kicks the leg, delivers.
- 20:32Outside and high, ball two is 2-0.
- 20:35Foundfeld behind Matty Alou, 3-0, worked a count of 3-2, and then Matty Alou doubled on the right field line.
- 20:44A near capacity crowd at Forbes Field on opening day 1970.
- 20:49One week from today, the Mets open its shea against the Parrots.
- 20:55Now, Jerry Grody sets the target, and a foul tip off the mid of Jerry Grody,
- 20:59and the count is two balls and a strike on third baseman Richie Hebner.
- 21:06The Pirates led the major leagues in team batting last season.
- 21:10They had a team batting average of 2-76.
- 21:13And with the return to form of Bill Mazurowski and Gene Alley, they figure to be even stronger.
- 21:20They had three rookies all come through.
- 21:24Richie Hebner, one of the three, is a left-hand batter.
- 21:27And the pitch by Tom Siever, good pitch at the knees for a call strike.
- 21:30It's 2-2.
- 21:34First baseman Al Oliver and third baseman Richie Hebner, and catcher Manny Sanghien,
- 21:40all putting in their first full season with the Pirates last year.
- 21:43Oliver and Hebner were bona fide rookies.
- 21:46Sanghien did not qualify for Rookie of the Year honors.
- 21:50Hebner and Sanghien both hit over 300.
- 21:52Oliver hit 285.
- 21:57Siever delivers 2-2.
- 21:58Swing and a miss, he's struck him out.
- 22:01Tom Siever behind on the count comes back to strikeout Hebner.
- 22:05Before Clemente steps in, we'll pause for station identification.
- 22:09This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 22:11This is New York Mets baseball on WKAJ FM 102.3 in Sarasota Springs, New York.
- 22:23Bob Murphy with Ralph Keiner and Lindsay Nelson.
- 22:26The last of any number one in Pittsburgh, the Mets lead the Pirates 2-0.
- 22:31And the four-time National League batting champion Roberto Clemente is the hitter.
- 22:40Here's the pitch by Tom Siever, low at outside ball one.
- 22:45Last year Clemente hit 345, second only to Pete Rose of Cincinnati,
- 22:50who led the Major Leagues in batting.
- 22:53Clemente had 19 home runs and 91 runs batted in.
- 22:58Roberto Clemente, right-hand batter.
- 23:04On second base, Mattie Allou, one man out.
- 23:07Now the pitch by Tom Siever, hit in the air to right field.
- 23:10Ron Swaboda got up again, he decoys it.
- 23:12It's a phase six. Mattie Allou is coming home.
- 23:15The throw coming in will not be in time.
- 23:17A run scoring single to right by Roberto Clemente.
- 23:30Ron Swaboda tried to decoy Mattie Allou, make him think that he could catch the ball,
- 23:34knowing that he couldn't.
- 23:35But Mattie Allou did not fall into the trap.
- 23:37He rounded third and fed home.
- 23:39And now Willie Starjul is coming up.
- 23:44The Pirates have a run in on a double by Mattie Allou and a single by Roberto Clemente.
- 23:49And heavy hitting Willie Starjul is the batter.
- 23:52Starjul hit 307 last year with 29 home runs.
- 23:56And the pitch by Siever, off outside ball one.
- 24:00Siever led up on it.
- 24:12Now the pitch on the way to Starjul, hit in the air to left field toward the line.
- 24:15Jones running after it and it's foul ball, a foul ball by Engines.
- 24:20Starjul just missed an extra base hit that would have tied up the ball game.
- 24:25He's a left hand pull hitter. The outfield plays him way around to right.
- 24:29He sliced that one right down the left field line and just foul.
- 24:39Starjul running it out, comes back to the batter's box.
- 24:47Baltimore, the defending American League champion opening in Cleveland,
- 24:50and the Orioles will pitch Dave McNally, a 21-game winner last season,
- 24:55against Sam McDowell, sudden Sam, an 18-game winner a year ago.
- 25:01One ball, one strike to Willie Starjul.
- 25:07Now Siever off the stretch, delivers swing and a miss at a fastball.
- 25:11One ball and two strikes.
- 25:15The skies are overcast, weathermen forecasting that the sun will break out around 230.
- 25:22Game time temperature was 48 degrees.
- 25:26Starjul the batter and the pitch by Siever.
- 25:28Ground ball hit down to first base.
- 25:30Shamsky steps on first, now they've got a run down play on Clementi.
- 25:34Shamsky running him back, gives the ball to Harrelson,
- 25:36and Harrelson tags out Clementi a double play to retire the side.
- 25:40So Starjul grounded out to Shamsky.
- 25:42Clementi elected to stand there and go into a run down situation,
- 25:46and Shamsky ran him toward second,
- 25:48flipped the ball to Harrelson to complete the twin killings.
- 25:51Two runs, two hits, no errors, none left.
- 25:55At the end of one inning, the score in Pittsburgh,
- 25:57the New York Mets 2 and the Pittsburgh Pirates 1.
- 26:01Music
- 26:29Music
- 26:47Music
- 27:05Wayne, a left hand batter, takes the pitch on the outside corner for a call strike.
- 27:10Wayne can play second, short or third.
- 27:12He has good hands, a good infielder.
- 27:16Wayne's starting in place of Ken Boswell.
- 27:18Boswell has been away a few days doing his military reserve duty.
- 27:21Now a breaking ball in the dirt, one ball and one strike.
- 27:24Garrett had a good spring, and if you'll recall, late last year he was hitting improved.
- 27:28He just improved all around as the year went along.
- 27:31He's a good looking young ball player.
- 27:35Jerry May behind the plate, in comes the pitch.
- 27:37Ground ball, pull foul down toward Yogi on the coaching lines at first base.
- 27:44In the game tomorrow, the Mets play the Pirates with Jerry Kuzman on the mound Thursday night.
- 27:48His mound opponent, by the way, will be Doc Ellis.
- 27:51Bob Moose is away for the first two weeks of the season doing reserve duty.
- 27:56So the Mets will miss Bob Moose the first two series.
- 28:02Wind up by Blass, the pitch is swung and the strike three.
- 28:05He got him with a fastball.
- 28:09For Blass, his first strikeout, and it brings up Jerry Grote.
- 28:23Jerry Grote, right-hand hitter.
- 28:27Top-notch receiver two years ago, the National League's all-star catcher.
- 28:33And he takes ball one.
- 28:38Jerry Grote is one of the young veterans on the New York Mets.
- 28:45Now Blass into his wind-up, delivers, and a line drive toward second.
- 28:48Masurowski takes it for the out.
- 28:50Hard-hit line drive, but right to the second base.
- 28:53Two outs and nobody on it will bring up Tom Seaver.
- 29:02Jerry Grote opening his fifth season as the Mets' number one receiver.
- 29:11Now here is Tom Seaver.
- 29:19Play is being held up for a moment by John Kilgore, the second base umpire.
- 29:25And they are calling a ball on the pitcher, Steve Blass, because he forgot
- 29:30to get it to his mouth with his pitching fingers.
- 29:34I think that's what it was, but I'm not sure.
- 29:36It might have been something on the field, Ralph, that they had to get rid of.
- 29:40Evidently, Bob, underneath this broadcasting booth, there's a light that's shining in someone's eyes.
- 29:45And I guess that's what Augie was doing when he made that motion, as though he had gone to his mouth.
- 29:49Now a swing and a miss by Tom Seaver.
- 29:51Yes, that's what it was.
- 29:52Something in the stands that was reflecting caught the attention of the second base umpire,
- 29:58and John Kilgore has stopped the game.
- 30:03Now Blass out of his windup.
- 30:04Here's the pitch to Tom Seaver, and it's low.
- 30:06One ball, one strike.
- 30:12Seaver, last year in compiling a great season, had two long winning streaks,
- 30:16an eight-game winning streak and a ten-game winning streak.
- 30:20Foul ball, back of stairs, no play.
- 30:22The ten-game winning streak is still alive.
- 30:25He lost the game in the World Series, but in regular season play, Tom has won ten straight.
- 30:34The Mets scored twice in the first inning on base hits by Tommy Agee, Cleon Jones, and Art Chamsky.
- 30:40Now a swing and a miss strike three.
- 30:42Seaver goes down swinging.
- 30:44No runs, no hits, no errors, and none left on.
- 30:47At the end of an inning and a half, the New York Mets two and the Pittsburgh Pirates one.
- 30:52I am going on a long journey.
- 30:58I will be following the streams through field and valley.
- 31:05I'll be searching for the natural things.
- 31:11It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 31:19There are two ways to carbonate beer.
- 31:21The fast way is to inject carbonation into it.
- 31:24The slow way is to let it age long enough to carbonate itself naturally,
- 31:28giving it a good extra dry natural taste.
- 31:31We'll take the slow way.
- 31:33At Reingold, we brew beer naturally.
- 31:36Natural Reingold.
- 31:38It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 31:48Reingold Breweries, Inc., New York, New York, and Orange, New Jersey,
- 31:51ask you to help keep America beautiful.
- 32:00Last of the second inning, New York two, Pittsburgh one,
- 32:03for the Pirates first baseman Al Oliver leads off against Tom Seaver.
- 32:08The Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies are scoreless at the end of one inning in Philadelphia.
- 32:13The Ferguson Jenkins pitching against Chris Short.
- 32:20This weekend, the Mets play in St. Louis.
- 32:22They have a Friday night game against the Cardinals,
- 32:25a Saturday afternoon game and a Sunday afternoon game.
- 32:28And after the game on Sunday, the team will be flying back to New York.
- 32:32Next Monday night, the welcome home dinner will be held in the grand ballroom of the New York Hilton Hotel.
- 32:39Quite a springboard into the opening day at Shea.
- 32:42This is the April 14th, the Mets playing the Pirates.
- 32:46Al Oliver, left-hand batter facing Tom Seaver and the pitches outside, ball one.
- 32:52As we mentioned, Oliver, last season as a rookie, hit 285.
- 32:57He had 17 home runs and 70 runs batted in.
- 33:02The 1-0 delivery, pulled foul down the right side, no play.
- 33:06One ball, one strike.
- 33:13Gene Alley is the on-deck batter and then Jerry May.
- 33:19Now Tom Seaver has his sign from Groody.
- 33:22And a drive toward the alley in right center field.
- 33:24It'll be in for an extra base hit.
- 33:26Running the ball all the way back to the wall at Browns-LaBotta.
- 33:30Oliver, a round second, is on his way to third.
- 33:32He'll pull in with a three-base hit.
- 33:46Al Oliver hitting one perfectly between Browns-LaBotta and Tommy Agin.
- 33:51That ball rolled out about 436 feet from home plate.
- 33:55A three-base hit to right center by Oliver to lead off the last half of the second.
- 34:00Now Gene Alley will be stepping in.
- 34:04Alley missed a great deal last year because of a bad shoulder.
- 34:08But it appears to be physically sound for this season.
- 34:11The infield back ready to concede a run.
- 34:13Here's the pitch.
- 34:14Low and outside.
- 34:15It almost got away from Jerry Groody.
- 34:21The Mets have the infield back at second and short.
- 34:24Playing Chamsky and Foy even with the bag at first and third.
- 34:28The infield deep and rather straight away.
- 34:31Alley a slender right-hand batter waiting.
- 34:33And a fastball in for a strike.
- 34:35One ball, one strike.
- 34:40Each team now has collected three bases.
- 34:45It appears as though it might be a day the hitters will take over.
- 34:49Now Siever winds and the pitch to Alley golf foul back upstairs.
- 34:53No play.
- 34:55Bob, you know this has always been sort of a hitters ballpark.
- 34:58There has never been a no hit no run game pitched in Forbes Field.
- 35:01And if they don't get one pitch pretty soon, there never will be.
- 35:04It's a tough game for a tough ballpark for home runs.
- 35:07But as you say, a good ballpark to hit in for base hits.
- 35:11The 1-2 delivery.
- 35:13Swing on a middle finale.
- 35:14He goes down swinging.
- 35:23The first two pirates in recent years have won five batting titles.
- 35:27Gives you an indication that this is a good ballpark to hit in for base hits.
- 35:31Flamini has won four.
- 35:32Mattie Alou picked up one.
- 35:34Jerry May stepping in now.
- 35:36And now the Mets will bring the infield in and try and cut this run off.
- 35:39Al Oliver on third with one man out.
- 35:42They played back at second and short with nobody out.
- 35:44Here's the pitch on the way.
- 35:46Get in the air to deep right field.
- 35:48Way back goes Roberta.
- 35:50And he dives and he makes the catch.
- 35:52A great catch by Swabota.
- 35:54The game is tied up.
- 35:55In the score comes Aliver.
- 36:00A remarkable play in the outfield by Ron Swabota to rob Jerry May of an extra base hit.
- 36:09He went as far as he could go on the dead run and lunged through the air,
- 36:13made a backhand grab, went sprawling on the ground, but held onto the ball.
- 36:19Well, I wouldn't say that was as good a play as he made in the World Series on Brooks Robinson,
- 36:23but it was a good one, Ralph, no doubt about it.
- 36:25He went as far as he could go and he had to make that last minute extra effort,
- 36:29and that took him off his feet.
- 36:32Maserowski the batter, two outs and nobody on.
- 36:37Mas hampered all last year by injuries.
- 36:40And he pops this one up.
- 36:42An infield pop-up out in front of the plate.
- 36:44Joe Foy comes down the line and makes the catch.
- 36:46Foy caught the ball right out in front of home plate.
- 36:51Ron Swabota getting a hand as he comes in for that marvelous catch.
- 36:54One run, one hit, no errors, none left.
- 36:57At the end of two innings, the score, the New York Mets 2 and the Pittsburgh Pirates 2.
- 37:02Well, Mets fans, we're into another season, and we hope a really great one for your ball club.
- 37:13Friendly Freddy is also going into another season of car washing,
- 37:16a really great one for his club.

- 37:44and of course, the automatic car wash.
- 37:47You just drive in, stay in your automobile, and before you know it,
- 37:50your car is coming out cleaned and, if you like, waxed.
- 37:54All this service for only $1.25. Wax is 50 cents extra.
- 37:59Believe me, Mets fans, this is a bargain with today's inflated prices.
- 38:03Come on in and give them a try.
- 38:08Pick up the action in the third inning as they turn on the lights.
- 38:11Ralph Kehner.
- 38:12Okay, Bob Murphy, and hi, everyone.
- 38:14The lights are on here at Forbes Field, and Tommy Agee batting for the second time.
- 38:17Steve Glass with his first pitch at that side, ball one.
- 38:21Tommy, after just missing a homer on the right field, top one out in front of the plate,
- 38:25his first time up, and beat it out for a base hit, and scored the first run of the ball game.
- 38:30There's a line drive to center field off the next pitch, a base hit for Tommy.
- 38:33So he is two for two.
- 38:35The ball fielded by Mattie Allou, and the throw on in, and Agee stays at first.
- 38:39That'll bring up Bud Harrelson.
- 38:42Gillette Platinum Plus has the platinum alloy edge that makes shaving smoother, closer,
- 38:47more comfortable than any blade in history.
- 38:49Gillette Platinum Plus, for the shave you've always wanted and more.
- 38:55Bud Harrelson batting left-handed flat out to center field, his first time up.
- 39:01Now again against Blask, and the pitch is low as Harrelson moves out to bunt, and it's ball one.
- 39:06Harrelson in bunting position for the sacrifice try on that first pitch.
- 39:11It's a two-two ball game.
- 39:18Agee at first base, not too big a lead.
- 39:21Now the pitch to Harrelson, it is taken inside, Harrelson gets out of the way,
- 39:25and on the pitch, Agee was running, it got away from the catcher, it'll be a stolen base.
- 39:30Now Agee, who had 12 stolen bases last year, gets his first this year,
- 39:34and the Mets have a runner in scoring position, it's ball two.
- 39:40Pitch was way inside, Harrelson almost got hit by it, he tried to get out of the way, it did,
- 39:45and it was off the glove of the catcher, Jerry Main rolled about 30 feet away.
- 39:51The pitch to Harrelson, check swing, ground ball hit out towards third base,
- 39:55picked up by Hebner, the throw to first base is just in time, and on the play Agee goes to third.
- 40:01But Harrelson was trying to get out of the way of the ball, and as he was pulling away,
- 40:06the ball hit the bat and went down towards third base, almost as though it were a perfect bunt.
- 40:11Harrelson had trouble getting started, or he would have beat the play at first base.
- 40:15And that brings up Joe Foy.
- 40:17Joe on the hit and run play was out third to first his first time up,
- 40:21it put Agee on at second base, he was running with the pitch and got the second,
- 40:25or he would have been forced there, and set it up for the Mets to score the first run.
- 40:33Now the pitch to Foy, it is hit hard to right, it might score a run,
- 40:37here comes Comenny to make the catch coming in, it's Agee, here's the throw, it's off line,
- 40:41and Agee scores standing up.
- 40:43So Roberto Comenny, throwing about 30 feet up towards third base,
- 40:47loses a chance to cut off a run at home, and the Mets take the lead by a score of 3-2
- 40:51on a sacrifice line drive out by Joe Foy.
- 40:55That'll bring up Cleon Jones.
- 41:01Cleon doubled the right field his first time up and drove in the first run of the season for the New York Mets.
- 41:08Mets leading by a score of 3-2, two men out,
- 41:12we're in the third, and the pitch to Cleon Jones is lowest ball one.
- 41:19Cleon's double on the first pitch that he saw this regular season was a line shot to right.
- 41:25Now a check on the swing, the pitch to lowest ball two.
- 41:29Two balls, no strikes.
- 41:31The Mets lead by a score of 3-2.
- 41:39Signs go on, Steve Blass working for the Pirates, and at 2-0, the pitch to Jones is taken in for a called strike.
- 41:46At the end of one, Cleon won, Baltimore nothing.
- 41:50At the end of two and a half, the Cubs nothing, Philadelphia nothing.
- 41:54And the 2-1 delivery.
- 41:57Jones takes over the inside corner by knee-high, 2-2.
- 42:09Mets have another ball game in this series with Pittsburgh.
- 42:12It'll be Thursday night.
- 42:14Jerry Kuzman is going for the Mets,
- 42:16and they move to St. Louis, and Gary Gentry will open up against the Mets.
- 42:20Then they move to St. Louis, and Gary Gentry will open up against the Cardinals on Friday night.
- 42:26Next pitch is way outside and high, a full count to Jones.
- 42:30On deck batter for the Mets, Art Chamsky.
- 42:38Overcast skies, temperature game time 48 degrees in Pittsburgh.
- 42:43And the 3-2 pitch.
- 42:45It's in the dirt, taken out by Jerry May, and on the pitch, Jones walks.
- 42:51So the Mets have Jones at first with two men out.
- 42:55Cleon with 16 stolen bases last year led the club in that department.
- 42:59And the batter coming up is Art Chamsky.
- 43:02A walk that's first given up by Steve Blask in the ball game.
- 43:07He has struck out two, he has allowed four hits.
- 43:09And the Mets lead by a score of 3-2 with the Mets batting with two men away in the top of the third.
- 43:15Chamsky single to right to drive in Cleon Jones, who had doubled his first time up.
- 43:21And the pitch is hit high in the air to right center field.
- 43:24Mattie Allou is making the call, a center fielder.
- 43:27And he makes the catch, and that retires aside.
- 43:30In the inning, the Mets break the tie, they score a run on one hit.
- 43:34No errors, and a walk, and one man left on.
- 43:36And the score in the middle of the third, the Mets three, the Pittsburgh Pirates, two.
- 43:45Memorial Day, 1969.
- 43:48Mario Entretti wins the fastest Indianapolis 500 ever in his STP oil treatment special.
- 43:53And this year the STP racing team will be back, trying for a record breaking two in a row.
- 43:58Andy Granatelli will see to that.
- 43:59STP is the racer's edge.
- 44:09When it comes to automotive testing laboratories, Indianapolis tops them all.
- 44:14500 miles there is like 50,000 in your family car.
- 44:18So we'll be counting on STP oil treatment to give us the edge.
- 44:20STP is the racer's edge.
- 44:29Give your family car the same edge the world's greatest drivers get.
- 44:33Add STP to your oil, and run racer sharp.
- 44:36STP is the racer's edge.
- 44:51We're going to the bottom of the third inning.
- 44:54Mets leading by a score of three to two here on opening day in Pittsburgh.
- 44:58And the Pirates coming up against Tom Seaver for the third time.
- 45:02First batter will be the pitcher Steve Blass.
- 45:03He'll be followed by Mattie Lue and then Richie Hebner.
- 45:06Seaver has been reached for two runs on three hits.
- 45:10Tom, a 25 game winner last year, and the first pitch to Blass gets swung on strike one.
- 45:17Augie Donatelli, the home plate umpire, the crew chief of this crew.
- 45:23Chris Pellicula, the umpire at first base.
- 45:25John Kivler, the umpire at second.
- 45:27Dave Davidson, umpire at third.
- 45:29One strike pitch, a called strike two.
- 45:31For the ball game, Seaver was in the clubhouse.
- 45:39And talking about things other than opening day.
- 45:43Next pitch is low on the count, one ball and two strikes.
- 45:46In fact, along with Joe Deer, the assistant trainer,
- 45:48we got to talking about a fellow named Chico Rodriguez.
- 45:52Now the pitch backs, swung on a miss, and Seaver has struck out Steve Blass.
- 45:59Third strike out for Tom in the ball game.
- 46:02That'll bring up Mattie Lue.
- 46:07Lue doubled on a 3-2 pitch right down the right field line this first time up.
- 46:13He led the National League in doubles last year with 41.
- 46:18Had 231 base hits to lead the National League, batted 331.
- 46:23Had one home run, 48 runs batted in, and he fouls the first pitch away at strike one.
- 46:27Mattie Lue last year set a new National League mark for times at bat.
- 46:32Official times at bat of 698, breaking an old record of 697 set by a Pittsburgh Pirate player, Woody Jensen.
- 46:40The one strike pitch, it is again fouled away, strike two.
- 46:48That's leading 3-2.
- 46:50As we were saying about Tom, we got talking about different ball players.
- 46:57Another ball player by the name of Chico Ruiz came up, and Don Hefner,
- 47:02who at one time was a manager for the Cincinnati Reds and a coach for the New York Mets,
- 47:06was his manager, and Hefner coasts in the third base coaching box.
- 47:11Next pitch is low and it's one ball and two strikes.
- 47:14And he always had a saying that if you didn't do well, you yell in and say,
- 47:17you can do better than that.
- 47:20And it was a pet expression of his, which he used all the time.
- 47:23Pitch back is hit foul into the stands on the third base side, so the count stays at one and two.
- 47:29Ruiz was at bat playing for Don Hefner at San Diego, and he swung and missed the two pitches.
- 47:35And Don Hefner yelled in from the third base coaching box, you can do better than that.
- 47:40Ruiz called time and walked down to Don Hefner and said, no I can't.
- 47:44Now the one-two pitch, rounded toward the shortstop, Harrelson will have to hurry the long throw in time for the out.
- 47:52Lou gets down that line in a hurry and Harrelson fielded that ball from a deep shortstop position.
- 47:59That'll bring up Richie Hefner, but first we pause for a station identification.
- 48:03This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 48:06This is New York Mets baseball on WKAJ FM 102.3 in Saratoga Springs, New York.
- 48:11Bob Murphy and Lindsey Nelson from Forbes Field in Pittsburgh, the Mets leading 3-2.
- 48:17Two men away, bottom of the third, and the first pitch to Richie Hefner is fouled off at strike one.
- 48:22Hefner was struck out on the curve ball his first time up.
- 48:27Left hand batter playing at third base, a pitch by Siever, a slop curve, hit the deep left center field, a long way for Cleon Jones.
- 48:35He's going, going, he cannot get to it.
- 48:37It is picked up by Tommy Agee and Hefner goes to second base and holds there as Agee makes a powerful throw perfectly to third.
- 48:49So another extra base hit for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 48:54They have had three now, and it brings up Roberto Cammini.
- 48:58That is the second time that Tom Siever has thrown what ball players call a slop curveball to the plate, and both times he has thrown it, it has gone for extra bases.
- 49:06Al Oliver tripled off of it, the right center, and now Hefner with a double to left center.
- 49:11Cleon Jones went as far as he could go and tried to make a high dive for it, but he couldn't reach it as he fell to the ground.
- 49:17And Agee had to pick it up out in deep left center field.
- 49:20Now Roberto Cammini in the first pitch, hit in the air down the right field line, a long run for Jamsky, but the ball is serving foul into the stands, and it's strike one.
- 49:28Now many blue to base hit the right field his first time up and drove in the first fired run of the year.
- 49:36Hits are all even at four piece, the Metzger is in the lead, and he's got a good chance of getting the ball.
- 49:41He's got a good chance of getting the ball, and he's got a good chance of getting the ball, and he's got a good chance of getting the ball.
- 49:50Hits are all even at four piece, the Metzger leading by a score of three to two, the Pirates with the time run at second base, and a one strike counter, Roberto Cammini.
- 49:58Speaking of extra base hits, Cammini led the National League in triples last year, he had twelve.
- 50:04Now one strike, Siever checks at second, comes back, and the pitch is just outside, a hard splatter, it's one and one.
- 50:20Cammini number twenty-one, lifetime batting average of three fourteen.
- 50:24Now Siever again set, and the one one pitch is high for ball two.
- 50:35Roberto Cammini played winter ball this year, and he said before the ball game that the reason why he did was to keep his shoulder, which he had injured, in constant action so it would not stiffen up and become a permanent injury.
- 50:47Two one pitch, swung on and missed, and Cammini with a hard, hard swing, a count two balls, two strikes.
- 50:59Roberto Cammini, last winter, turned down a chance to run for mayor.
- 51:05He is a popular ball player.
- 51:08Puerto Rico, here's a two-two delivery.
- 51:11It is swung on and missed, strike three, and Siever gets Roberto Cammini with a hard high fast ball.
- 51:17That is Sievers' fourth strike out, every tire is aside.
- 51:21In the inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, a man left at second, and the score at the end of three, the New York Mets three, the Pittsburgh Pirates two.

- 52:00John Hancock introduces Rich Band Coverage for the Not Yet Rich, a life insurance package with an initial benefit of $100,000, very good for the ego, and you can afford it.
- 52:12If you're 24, you may have to pay about $38 a month.
- 52:16Ask Ben Yanklowich about Rich Band Coverage, $100,000 worth of life insurance that will make you feel like a million.
- 52:21Call Ben, 783-5571, or write Ben Yank, Box J, Latham, New York, 12110 for more details.
- 52:31John Hancock, huh?
- 52:34Now Ron Cibota, the leadoff for the New York Mets. They lead 3-2 after 3, and the first pitch to Ron is low ball one.
- 52:45Ron grunted to the shortstop, Gene Alley his first time up and was out, batting against Steve Blask for the second time.
- 52:53Ron batting in the sixth batting position, last back, and the pitch again is low, it's ball two.
- 53:01Behind Ron Cibota, Wayne Garrett and Jerry Groody for Steve Blask in this inning.
- 53:07Minnesota got three runs in the top half of the first.
- 53:11White Sox now coming up.
- 53:15Two-oh pitch hit deep to right field, a long drive it'll be. For extra bases it might go all the way. It is off of the wall.
- 53:22Cibota makes the turn at first, goes into second base with a standup double.
- 53:27Well hit ball over the head of Roberto Cavetti about 390 feet.
- 53:31So the extra base hits continue to resign off the bats of both teams.
- 53:36And the Mets now have a runner at second base with no one out and Wayne Garrett coming up.
- 53:45Wayne was struck out his first time up. He went down swinging at a fastball. Left hand batter, batted 2-18 last year.
- 53:54He had one home run and 39 runs battered in.
- 53:59Once again, action starting up on the bullpen for the Pirates. Dave Juste, a right-hander, along with Lou Maroney, a left-hander.
- 54:09Now Steve Blask, who has been reached for five hits with his first pitch to Garrett, a curveball swung on a miss strike one.
- 54:18Manager Gil Oshad that Ron Cibota was going to be his standard right fielder for both right and left hand pitching.
- 54:26Ron here has responded with a long double. There's a drive that deep right field going back has commanded to the warning track.
- 54:34He makes the catch. Going over it from second base is Ron Cibota the third.
- 54:38So a long fly ball by Wayne Garrett about 375 feet.
- 54:43And the Mets now have a runner at third base with one man away and the Mets have Jerry Grote coming up.
- 54:48So far that experiment, or that decision mainly, by Gil Hodges has worked well.
- 54:55Cibota has a double and two times up. Schansky has a single and a run battered in and two times up.
- 55:01Jerry Grote the batter. Jerry hit a soft line drive to second for an out his first time up.
- 55:06Pirates are playing their infield in, hoping to cut off a run.
- 55:10And the first pitch is popped up.
- 55:12The infield moving in on that's going to be Richie Ebner the third baseman to make the catch.
- 55:18And he does right on the pitching mound for the out.
- 55:22So the Mets lose a chance to score a run on a sacrifice fly.
- 55:27And that leaves it up to Tom Seaver who's batting now with two men away.
- 55:31The Mets leading 3-2, top of the fourth inning.
- 55:36Seaver was struck out his first time up.
- 55:38Now we got some sunshine breaking through the overcast here in Pittsburgh.
- 55:46Seaver a right hand batter and Steve Blass with the first pitch.
- 55:51Ground ball hit right back to Blass. He feels the ball throws the first base to start as he dies.
- 55:57No runs, one hit a lead off double.
- 56:00No errors, the man left it third in the score in the middle of the fourth inning.
- 56:04The New York Mets three, the Pittsburgh Pirates two.
- 56:06The finest in Italian cuisine and a wide array of steaks, chops and seafood await your dining pleasure at Mangino's restaurant located on the south end of Cerro Tevalic.
- 56:17But there's a big difference between just ordinary Italian or American cuisine and Mangino's fine food.
- 56:23At Mangino's your order is never prepared hours before.
- 56:27Mangino's realize that good food cannot be hurried and they ask you to give them a little time to prepare it properly.
- 56:32All dishes are prepared to your order when your order is placed never before and it hasn't been simmering away for hours or minutes.
- 56:40That's the big difference at Mangino's.
- 56:42Why not enjoy eating Italian food the way it should be savored and dine at Mangino's restaurant located on the south end of Cerro Tevalic on Route 9P just two miles from Route 9.
- 56:52A complete line of Italian specialties are served to tempt the palate and their steaks and chops and seafood are equally as delightful.
- 56:58If you're planning a party or a banquet for up to 75 call Mangino's for their special party menu.
- 57:04That's Mangino's restaurant the home of truly fine foods on Route 9P at the south end of Cerro Tevalic.
- 57:11Fourth inning the Mets leading 3 to 2 in the first game of this 1970 regular season.
- 57:17Tom Zever working for the Mets, Steve Black working for Pittsburgh.
- 57:22The Mets have had three runs on five hits, the Pirates have had two runs on four hits.
- 57:25And the first batter for the Pirates will be Willie Stargell.
- 57:34Willie hit into a double play his first time up grounding to Art Chamsky who stepped on the bag and then Roberto Comenny who was on first was worked out on a run down play.
- 57:43Now a high fly ball hits to right field.
- 57:46Ron Cebota and Lee Lin gets under the ball and makes the catch.
- 57:49So Stargell pops up a slow curve ball and it's one away.
- 57:56Now Oliver will now come up.
- 57:59Oliver tripled the right center field off a curve ball his first time up and scored the second powered run when he was driven in on a sacrifice fly by Jerry May.
- 58:07Oliver a left hand batter a 285 hitter last year.
- 58:19Zever now checking out his right fielder Ron Cebota.
- 58:22Ron playing a very deep right field.
- 58:24As Bob Murphy told you earlier this is a tremendously large ballpark.
- 58:29Now the first pitch and it's ball one.
- 58:30This probably is the largest ballpark in area for playing area in the Major League.
- 58:37I don't believe anybody's ever thoroughly checked it out but it would just about have to be.
- 58:41Next pitch is Lowell and it's ball two.
- 58:44Two balls no strikes.
- 58:47457 the center field at the deepest point.
- 58:51360 down the left field line.
- 58:54Now a hard swing and a miss and it's two balls and one strike.
- 58:57300 down the right field line but it goes out sharply about a 45 degree angle the 375.
- 59:07Now the two one delivery to Oliver and it's Lowell ball three.
- 59:12Three and one.
- 59:14That's leading by a score of three to two.
- 59:21Baltimore got a run in the top of the second they have tied up Cleveland 1-1.
- 59:24Now a hard swing and a fastball but the ball fouled off and it's a free two count.
- 59:29As Sieber works against the left hand batter Al Oliver.
- 59:33Beyond deck batter the shortstop Gene Alex.
- 59:41Now Sieber with his three two pitch.
- 59:44And it's popped up on the third base side.
- 59:47Joe Foy has room and foul territory to get to it.
- 59:48He is under it and he makes the catch.
- 59:54Bob Murphy there's an airplane in fact two of them flying over with a streaming banner.
- 59:59Behind one of them has something to do with Plymouth.
- 1:00:02But you know one day I was playing ball here and they came by with the airplane pulling the banner and said hit one up here kinder.
- 1:00:09Did you do it? I missed it by about two feet.
- 1:00:12Well I think you should have had at least one practice swing.
- 1:00:15Now the batter is Gene Alley and a curveball is high on inside.
- 1:00:21Alley has to spin away to keep him getting hit. It's ball one.
- 1:00:27We were playing the Giants that day.
- 1:00:29And now San Francisco Giants we won the ball game.
- 1:00:33Now the pitch hit high in the air and foul territory.
- 1:00:36But the ball is going out of play.
- 1:00:47One ball one strike down on Gene Alley.
- 1:00:50Alley last year about a 2.46.
- 1:00:52You notice the new brick out there in left center at the 4.06 mark.
- 1:00:55You know why that is? Somebody run through that wall.
- 1:00:58That's where Maserowski hit that historic World Series winning home run.
- 1:01:02Now a swing and a foul off the glove of Jerry Grote.
- 1:01:07The count stays at one ball and two strikes.
- 1:01:09So they took the bricks out in the area where he hit that historic home run.
- 1:01:12And there will be a part of the new Free River Stadium.
- 1:01:15That's why you see new brick out there.
- 1:01:17Glad to know that.
- 1:01:194.06 mark.
- 1:01:22Now the pitch back.
- 1:01:24And a time to curveball. It misses two balls and two strikes.
- 1:01:27I thought you were going to tell me that's where Willie Stargo runs through the wall.
- 1:01:32I believe he could.
- 1:01:35He probably could as hard as he is.
- 1:01:37Now the 2-2 delivery.
- 1:01:40It is hit to the second baseman Wenger at a soft line drive.
- 1:01:44And he makes the catch and every tire is inside.
- 1:01:46A 1-2-3 inning for Tom Sieber.
- 1:01:48The first time he's done that in a ball game.
- 1:01:50And the score at the end of four.
- 1:01:52The New York Mets three. The Pittsburgh Pirates two.
- 1:01:54I am going on a long journey.
- 1:02:01I will be following the streams through field and valley.
- 1:02:09I'll be searching for the natural things.
- 1:02:14It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 1:02:24At Reingold we brew beer with the natural things.
- 1:02:27Reingold Extra Dry is made with good water.
- 1:02:30Just about the best in the world.
- 1:02:32If you don't start out with good water, you don't end up with good beer.
- 1:02:36We start out with good water.
- 1:02:38Natural Reingold.
- 1:02:39It is high time that I was searching for the natural things.
- 1:02:49Reingold Breweries Incorporated.
- 1:02:52New York, New York and Orange, New Jersey.
- 1:02:54Ask you to help keep America beautiful.
- 1:02:56Hitting number five here at Forbesfield.
- 1:03:02The Mets three. Pirates two. Tommy Agee to lead off against Steve Blatt.
- 1:03:05Tommy has two for two.
- 1:03:09And has scored two of the three runs for the New York Mets.
- 1:03:13Tommy beat out an infield hit in the first inning.
- 1:03:16He singled to center and stole second to set up a run in the third inning.
- 1:03:20So an impressive start for Tommy Agee.
- 1:03:24Now the pitch by Blass. A ground ball hit right at Maseroski.
- 1:03:27Mas is up with it. Throws on to Al Oliver at first base. One out.
- 1:03:30Bud Harrelson has flied to center and bounced out to third. Nothing for two.
- 1:03:38J.C. Martin is in the opening day lineup for the Chicago Cubs catching Ferguson Jenkins in Philadelphia.
- 1:03:45Which would indicate that Randy Hundley is not yet physically ready to play.
- 1:03:49Taken high by Bud Harrelson. Ball one.
- 1:03:51Billy's lead at Chicago. One nothing at the end of four with Ferguson Jenkins pitching against Chris Short.
- 1:04:00And a slow ground ball off the mound. Steve Blass. He underhands to throw to Oliver. Two down.
- 1:04:06So two men quickly set aside by Steve Blass. And it will bring up Joe Foy.
- 1:04:12Joe has bounced out to third and driven a run in with a sacrifice fly.
- 1:04:16His sacrifice fly in the third inning put New York back into the lead three-two.
- 1:04:26Leon Jones the clean up hitter comes out on deck.
- 1:04:31That's three runs on five hits. They've had three left on.
- 1:04:35The pirate outfield around to left.
- 1:04:38And a swing and a miss and a breaking ball. Strike one.
- 1:04:41Azurowski has been playing a very deep second base against the right hand batters.
- 1:04:47And shading them for the most part toward the middle of the diamond.
- 1:04:50Now Blass delivers and a half swing foul ball right straight back no play.
- 1:04:57And Blass now has a two-strike advantage.
- 1:05:00One other day opener in the Niagara League today but starting later it's on the west coast at Candlestick Park Houston at San Francisco.
- 1:05:08At Candlestick Park this year they will be playing on a synthetic field.
- 1:05:14The two-strike delivery high and inside.
- 1:05:19One ball two strikes to Joe Foy.
- 1:05:23No game tomorrow the Mets and Parrots Thursday night Jerry Kuzman pitching against Doc Ellis.
- 1:05:31Pitching one and two. And a change up breaking ball that's inside almost a blooper curve.
- 1:05:36And the count is two balls and two strikes.
- 1:05:44The Mets scored twice in the first inning today.
- 1:05:47Cleon Jones doubled home Tommy Agee and Art Shamsky singled home Cleon Jones.
- 1:05:53Pittsburgh came back to tie the game.
- 1:05:56And a curve in the dirt.
- 1:05:59That ball got away from Steve Blass and struck the dirt far out in front of the plate.
- 1:06:03And now we have a full count three and two.
- 1:06:06Pittsburgh tied the game getting one run in the first inning as Roberto Clementi singled home Mattie Allou.
- 1:06:13And Jerry May's sacrifice fly in the second brought home Al Oliver.
- 1:06:18Swing and a miss he struck him up.
- 1:06:21On three and two Blass fans Joe Foy for Steve Blass his third strikeout.
- 1:06:27No runs no hits no errors and none left on.
- 1:06:29So we've come halfway at the end of four and one half innings to score the New York Mets three and the Pittsburgh Pirates two.
- 1:06:39Having a problem in deciding where to take your group on its next outing?

- 1:07:50Last of inning number five and Jerry May the catcher batting seventh in the order faces Tom Siever.
- 1:07:57He drove in a run in the second with a long fly ball to right center and Swabota made a remarkable catch to rob him of an extra base hit.
- 1:08:04The pitch by Siever is low inside ball one.
- 1:08:12Tom Siever 25 and 7 last year winner of the Nice-Dalek-Sci Young Award and runner up in the most valuable player balloting.

- 1:09:53Satch Davidson at third. Pitch taken outside by Masurowski.
- 1:09:57Both Masurowski and Alley missed a lot last year due to injuries and a half swing slow ground ball down the first base line.
- 1:10:06Siever picks the ball up in fair territory tags out Masurowski.
- 1:10:10Good play by Siever he had to get there in a hurry because the ball probably would have rolled foul before it reached the first base back.
- 1:10:17Siever left the mound and got to it near the line.
- 1:10:21Two outs nobody on Steve Blass the pirate hurler coming up.
- 1:10:25You have to work on Steve Blass he's among the better hitting pitchers in the Nistel League.
- 1:10:30He had one game against the Cubs last year he had four bases and one ball game.
- 1:10:37Blass hits right handed.

- 1:11:05It has been overcast the overcast just now starting to break up.
- 1:11:09And he tries to bunny's way on the pitcher's strike two.

- 1:15:02Glass with a count of one ball two strikes.
- 1:15:06Here's the pitch and a curve in the dirt out in front of the plate.
- 1:15:11That breaking ball is bothering Steve Blass.
- 1:15:14I mean he's been changing up on his curve ball and it's been getting out of his hand in a wrong way and breaking into the dirt far out in front of the plate.
- 1:15:22The 2-2 delivery and it's over strike free call.

- 1:21:34Inside and low it's ball one.
- 1:21:35Top of the order for the parents in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:21:39Mattie Allou, Richie Hebner and Roberto Clemente.
- 1:21:45Now Siever delivers and Allou takes a look and goes outside.
- 1:21:50Two balls and no strikes.
- 1:21:53Mattie Allou had 231 hits last year.
- 1:21:57Most prolific hit maker in Major League Baseball.
- 1:22:00Lion in the right center field.
- 1:22:05He's going after it.
- 1:22:07And the ball is rolling all the way back to the center field fence.
- 1:22:10Mattie Allou is a round second.
- 1:22:12The relay is run by Wayne Garrett the third to head first slide he's three.

- 1:23:08The only single the Pirates have picked up today was by Roberto Clemente in the first inning to drive in a run.
- 1:23:13All of their other hits have been extra base hits.
- 1:23:17And a high fly ball at the short right field.
- 1:23:21Garrett is going out. Mattie Allou is not tagging up.
- 1:23:24Garrett makes the catch.
- 1:23:26And holding a third Mattie Allou.
- 1:23:28So one man away and now let's see if the Mets bring the infield in.
- 1:23:31Roberto Clemente will be the batter.
- 1:23:41Clemente is single to run in in the first inning.
- 1:23:44And Tom Siever struck him out with a runner in the scoring position in the third inning.
- 1:23:49Now the left side of the infield comes in.
- 1:23:53Clemente hits to the opposite field a great deal.
- 1:23:57And so Garrett is playing him back at normal fielding depth.
- 1:24:01The other three infielders are in.
- 1:24:04Tom Siever using the full windup and the pitch to Roberto.
- 1:24:08It's over. Strike one's off.
- 1:24:14Mets leading by a score of three to two.

- 1:24:25It might go to the crowd looking for a play as Shamsky is into the crowd.
- 1:24:30So near and so far.
- 1:24:33Art Shamsky pinned himself up against the field box railing.
- 1:24:37Tried to reach over and grab it.
- 1:24:39But it was just out of his reach.
- 1:24:42Now Tom Siever has a two strike count on Roberto Clemente.
- 1:24:46Siever has walked none.
- 1:24:49Struck out four allowed two runs given up five bases.
- 1:24:53The sun breaks through the overcast and Tom McKenna the center of the New York Mets brings the sunglasses out.
- 1:25:02They also take the glasses to Cleon Jones and left field.
- 1:25:09Sunglasses brought out to Joe Foy and the
- 1:25:11Cleon Jones the angle of the sun has the sun right in the eyes of the third baseman and the left fielder.
- 1:25:21Now the Mets dugout trying to get the attention of Ron Swabota and they move Swabota closer to the right field line.
- 1:25:29Wind up by Siever here's the pitch ground ball hit hard.
- 1:25:33Game is tied as Mattie Allou comes on.
- 1:25:35Clemente with his second run batted in.
- 1:25:42Roberto Clemente picking up where he left off.
- 1:25:45Now has two for three and two runs batted in.

- 1:25:58Stargell is the first to make the first run.
- 1:26:01The right nothing for two.
- 1:26:07Mets have the infield looking for two.
- 1:26:09Now the pitch curve hit on the ground a second base Wayne Garrett charging in.
- 1:26:13First to second force play on Clemente.
- 1:26:16Ball hit slowly.
- 1:26:17One was all they could hope for and they got the lead runner Roberto Clemente.
- 1:26:21Wayne Garrett to Bud Harrelson.
- 1:26:25So the Mets are in the lead.
- 1:26:27Wayne Garrett to Bud Harrelson.
- 1:26:31So with two men away the first baseman Al Oliver comes up.
- 1:26:35He hit a long triple to right center in the second and later scored.
- 1:26:39And he fouled out to Joe Foy in the fourth inning.
- 1:26:44The Pirates have three runs on six hits.
- 1:26:46And four of their six hits have been extra base hits.
- 1:26:49The Mets have six base hits and three of their six have been extra base hits.
- 1:26:57Now Siever checks the runner Willie Stargell.
- 1:27:01And the pitch on the way.
- 1:27:03Fast ball at the knees.
- 1:27:04Strike one call.
- 1:27:07No game tomorrow the concluding game of this two game series Thursday night.
- 1:27:14Art Shansky holding against the runner.
- 1:27:16And Siever's pitch lined hard at deep left field.
- 1:27:20Back to those Cleon Jones and he makes the catch.
- 1:27:22The side is out.
- 1:27:23A long drive to the opposite field.
- 1:27:26Taken by Cleon.

- 1:28:44With the score tied 3-3 we go to the seventh inning now and Tom Siever is up to lead off for the Mets.
- 1:28:50Siever has struck out and grounded out in his two previous appearances at the plate today.
- 1:28:55Here's a right hand batter facing right hand pitcher Steve Blass.
- 1:28:59Blass was a 16 game winner last year.
- 1:29:02Oh the Pittsburgh Pirates the pitch is high for a ball.
- 1:29:06Blass makes his home in Cannon Connecticut.
- 1:29:09Siever makes his home in Greenwich Connecticut.
- 1:29:15Pitch is in for a call strike and it's one and one.
- 1:29:18Tommy Agee is waiting on deck now for the New York Mets.
- 1:29:22The Mets had a two run lead.
- 1:29:24The Pirates came back to tie it at 2-2.
- 1:29:26The Mets had a one run lead.
- 1:29:28The Pirates came back to tie it at 3-3.
- 1:29:30Here's a delivery swung on and missed.
- 1:29:32It's one and two.
- 1:29:34Siever trying to chop that ball to the right side.
- 1:29:36Maserowski is playing on the rim of the outfield grass at second base.
- 1:29:44Lights have been on here since the third inning at Forbes Field.
- 1:29:48Now the pitch swung on and Miss and Blass gets his sixth strikeout of the day.
- 1:29:54One met out in the seventh and Tommy Agee is coming up.
- 1:30:00Joe Gibbon and Twiggy Hardenstein are throwing in the bullpen now for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:30:07Left handed Joe Gibbon.
- 1:30:09Slight right handed Twiggy Hardenstein.
- 1:30:13Agee is two for three and here's a pitch foul back out of play.
- 1:30:18Agee singled and later scored in the first inning.
- 1:30:21Sengl stole the base and later scored in the third inning.
- 1:30:24Granted out second to first in the fifth inning.
- 1:30:32Blass has settled out after getting off to a shaky start here.
- 1:30:40Now the pitch.
- 1:30:41It's high for of all.
- 1:30:42Jerry May is behind the plate this afternoon on opening day for the Pirates.
- 1:30:46Manesong Gion would have been there but for the fact that swinging out a pitch at the Pirate camp in Bradenton he pulled a muscle underneath the rib cage and after watching him take batting practice yesterday Danny Murtaugh scratched him and inserted Jerry May.
- 1:31:00That pitch is low and away.
- 1:31:02May steps out in front of the plate now returning the ball to Steve Blass.
- 1:31:06Two balls and one strike.
- 1:31:10The met bullpen is down in the left field corner.
- 1:31:12The powered bullpen down in the right field corner here at Forbes Field.
- 1:31:22This will be a 2-1 delivery.
- 1:31:24Steve Blass offers and it's hung on and fouled up off the ankle of Tommy Agee.
- 1:31:29So the count goes to two balls and two strikes.
- 1:31:35Bud Harrelson is on deck.
- 1:31:37And that starting lineup today provided something of a surprise and that Art Shamsky was at first base.
- 1:31:44Wayne Garrett at second.
- 1:31:46Ken Boswell was away for four days on military reserve duty in Texas and manager Gil Hygge said yesterday he just didn't think that Boswell would be sharp enough to be in the opening day lineup.
- 1:31:57Boswell did return late yesterday.
- 1:32:00There's a curveball in for a called strike three.
- 1:32:03Blass with a curveball strikes out of the net.
- 1:32:06A curveball strikes out Agee for his seventh strikeout of the day.
- 1:32:15So strikeouts back to back and now Bud Harrelson's coming up.
- 1:32:18Slide to center, grounded out third to first, grounded out pitcher to first.
- 1:32:23Harrelson is a switch hitter batting left.
- 1:32:27Here's a pitch.
- 1:32:29Swung on and looped out in the right field center for a base hit.
- 1:32:32Clemente comes up, plays it back and Bud Harrelson turns and holds with a looping single to right field.
- 1:32:39It comes with two men out here in the top of the seven that brings up Joe Poy.
- 1:32:43Poy grounded out, had a sacrifice by the right to drive and a run and struck out swinging.
- 1:32:48Officially Poy is 0 for 2 in his debut as a New York Mets here this afternoon.
- 1:32:54The Mets go ahead in total base hits, not sevens with a power at six.
- 1:32:58Poy has a close stance at the plate.
- 1:33:01He can hit with some power.
- 1:33:04He had 11 home runs last year at Kansas City.
- 1:33:08Swung on, a high infield pop to the right side.
- 1:33:11Mazurowski calls.
- 1:33:13He's underneath up near the rim of the infield grass, makes the catch.
- 1:33:16Side is out, it's no runs, a hit, no errors and one left.
- 1:33:20In the middle of the seventh inning the score is the New York Mets 3 and the Pittsburgh Pirates 3.

- 1:34:41We'll be going to the bottom of the seventh inning here now.
- 1:34:43The Pirates will have Gene Alley up there to lead off, facing Tom Seaver.
- 1:34:48It was started and has been all the way before the New York Mets.
- 1:34:52A 3-3 tie in the seventh inning. The Pirate fans are up and stretching.
- 1:34:57Gene Alley struck out and lined out the second base.
- 1:35:03Now the pitch is outside for a ball.
- 1:35:07Very good. He sends out a sign, and here's Seaver's 1-0 offering.
- 1:35:11It's in there for a called strike.
- 1:35:14Gene Alley hit.246 last year over the course of a season,
- 1:35:18much of which was spent on the bench by him because of injuries.
- 1:35:22He is a former National League All-Star shortstop.
- 1:35:25Here's a foul ball back and out of play, and it goes to 1-2 to Gene Alley.
- 1:35:29Jerry May is waiting on deck.
- 1:35:37Pittsburgh Pirates, one of the hardest hitting teams in baseball,
- 1:35:40and the New York Mets, the defending world champions, are tied 3-3,
- 1:35:45breaking pitch fouled off.
- 1:35:47And they just got the bat on the ball.
- 1:35:49It's just what he was trying to do with that one.
- 1:35:52Thinking it just might catch the outside corner, knew he couldn't pull it.
- 1:35:59It's fouled off, and the count is 1-2.
- 1:36:03Again, Seaver offers up a pitch.
- 1:36:06Picks a lot off of that one, and the change is hit in the air to center,
- 1:36:09and AG can't get it.
- 1:36:11The base hit.
- 1:36:12One hop, and play back.
- 1:36:14So Alley gets the base hit off the change.
- 1:36:17It's a leadoff single for the Pirates here in the bottom of the 7th.
- 1:36:22They have the tie-breaking run on board with nobody out,
- 1:36:24and Jerry May coming up.
- 1:36:26Let's see how manager Danny Murtaugh plays it.
- 1:36:28Now May, his catcher, is a long ball hitter.
- 1:36:32He hit 2-32 last year.
- 1:36:34He's the number 7 man in the order.
- 1:36:36He's followed by Mazurowski.
- 1:36:38Arshansky comes over now to hold against the runner at first base for the Mets.
- 1:36:42Seaver up and set.
- 1:36:47Here's the pitch to May.
- 1:36:48He squares, bunch foul.
- 1:36:50It's out of play right down at his feet.
- 1:36:52So the sacrifice was on.
- 1:36:54Now, does Murtaugh leave it on on the second pitch?
- 1:36:57Does he switch off and go to the hit and run?
- 1:37:00Frank Osiak is relaying the sign now to Jerry May.
- 1:37:04Joe Foy is guarding the line at third, ready to charge.
- 1:37:08Shamsky is holding against the runner at first.
- 1:37:12Jerry Grote, alert behind the plate, ready to get out there on the possible bunt.
- 1:37:16The counters strike one to Jerry May.
- 1:37:18Seaver is working off the stretch, checks the runner.
- 1:37:21Here's the pitch.
- 1:37:22May squares, bunt and miss.
- 1:37:24He hits strike two.
- 1:37:26Now, would he leave it on all the way?
- 1:37:32Chances are he would not.
- 1:37:35Chances are he would have all made a swing away.
- 1:37:38That's what May's finding out now.
- 1:37:40Meanwhile, manager Gil Hodge has action in the mid-bowl pin.
- 1:37:43Left hand to Tug McGraw, right hand to Ron Taylor.
- 1:37:46Up and throwing.
- 1:37:47We're in the seventh inning.
- 1:37:48This is a two-strike delivery to May.
- 1:37:50The bunt's not on.
- 1:37:51He fouls it back with a full swing out of play.
- 1:37:55So the count holds at 0-2 to Jerry May.
- 1:37:59He's reading the sign of Osiak again.
- 1:38:03Chances are he'll be free to swing away from here on out
- 1:38:07with an 0-2 count.
- 1:38:10But the bunt was on for the first two pitches.
- 1:38:13Score tied, 3-3 in the seventh.
- 1:38:16Now the pitch swung on and popped up foul down the line
- 1:38:19and left 15 toward the stands out of play.
- 1:38:22Count continues at two strikes.
- 1:38:29The Mets got two runs from the top of the first.
- 1:38:31The Mets got one in the bottom of the first and one in the bottom of the second
- 1:38:34to make it a 2-2 tie.
- 1:38:36In the top of the third, the Mets went ahead again,
- 1:38:39getting a singleton to make it 3-2.
- 1:38:41The Mets got one in the sixth to make it 3-3,
- 1:38:43and that's where we are just now.
- 1:38:45We're in the bottom of the seventh.
- 1:38:47Score tied.
- 1:38:49Here's the swing and a drive deep to the left.
- 1:38:51Way back, but safe there.
- 1:38:52It's gone.
- 1:38:53And it is a foul ball.
- 1:38:55A foul ball.
- 1:38:57Way down over a wall in the left field corner.
- 1:39:01Jerry May, whom, as we say, is capable of hitting the long ball,
- 1:39:07rode one out of here a foul ball.
- 1:39:10Her boy, the count, doing two to Jerry May as he comes back to the plate.
- 1:39:20Picked up the bat.
- 1:39:22Handful of dirt.
- 1:39:26He fouled off three straight 0-2 pitches.
- 1:39:29Siever hasn't wasted any on him.
- 1:39:31He's had him in the strike zone.
- 1:39:34The runner at first is Gene Alley.
- 1:39:36Chamsky holds against him.
- 1:39:38And here's the pitch.
- 1:39:40That's in for a called strike three.
- 1:39:42Siever caught him licking.
- 1:39:45Five strikeouts for Siever.
- 1:39:48Last has struck out seven.
- 1:39:51Bill Nazarovsky's coming up.
- 1:39:53The field captain of the Pittsburgh Pirates has popped the third
- 1:39:56and ground it out to the pitcher unassisted.
- 1:39:59That was on little Squibbler down the first baseline in the fifth inning.
- 1:40:04Now, this followed in the batting order by pitcher Steve Blass.
- 1:40:13Now, Siever checks and deals.
- 1:40:15Pitchers in for a called strike.
- 1:40:22Nazarovsky looks down to Frank Josiak, the coach at third.
- 1:40:26See if there's any possibility of a hit and run.
- 1:40:30Twiggy Hardenstein continues to throw in the bullpen for the Pirates
- 1:40:33in case they want to go to a pinch hitter for Blass.
- 1:40:36Here's a swing and a high pop fly to the right side.
- 1:40:39Garrett's back.
- 1:40:40Swabota's coming in.
- 1:40:41Who's going to call?
- 1:40:42Swabota calls.
- 1:40:43Loses the cap and makes the catch.
- 1:40:46Holding it first now is Alley.
- 1:40:50And Blass is going to bat for himself.
- 1:40:53Blass is a pretty good hitting pitcher.
- 1:40:55What that means is that he takes a good cut
- 1:40:57and is not an automatic out as many pitchers are.
- 1:41:04Blass has struck out and grounded out pitcher to first so far today.
- 1:41:07Sun breaks through the overcast as it has done on several occasions this afternoon.
- 1:41:12Two men out, runner at first, bottom half of the seventh score tied.
- 1:41:20Deaver off the stretch, sidearm and felt it in the center.
- 1:41:25It's a base hit.
- 1:41:26A.G. over, up with it, holding it second is Alley.
- 1:41:29The throw comes in, runners at first and second.
- 1:41:33We far us for station identification.

- 1:42:23It's strike one.
- 1:42:26Matty Allou is one of the toughest men in the National League to strike out.
- 1:42:30He gets the bat on the ball somehow, someway.
- 1:42:35Howard Runners lead at first and second, Blath wearing the jacket on the base pass.
- 1:42:42Siever off the stretch.
- 1:42:43Pitch outside.
- 1:42:44Fastball.
- 1:42:45It's one and one.
- 1:42:48Allou struck out only 35 times last year and 698 times at bat.
- 1:42:54That's getting the bat on the ball.
- 1:42:57Here's a curve ball.
- 1:42:59Second by Siever, a line drive.
- 1:43:01Siever went up and stared at the mound for the out.
- 1:43:04It was a punchline drive.
- 1:43:06Siever had him in the webbing of his glove with a lot of white showing.
- 1:43:10The side is retired.
- 1:43:11No runs.
- 1:43:14Two hits.
- 1:43:15No errors and two left.
- 1:43:17The end of seven innings.
- 1:43:18The score is the Mets 3 and the Pirates 3.
- 1:43:22The New York Mets are coming up now in the eighth inning and manager Gil Hodges has sent Mike Jorgensen down to the bullpen to loosen up.
- 1:43:28Jorgensen's loosening up now.
- 1:43:29If the Mets get a run, Jorgensen will come in to play first base.
- 1:43:34So anticipating the possibility of getting a run here in the eighth, Gil Hodges has sent Jorgensen down to warm up.
- 1:43:41It'll be Cleon Jones, Art Shansky and Ron Swabota for the Mets in the eighth inning.
- 1:43:45Jones has doubled the drive in a run, walked and struck out.
- 1:43:48Here's a swing and a base hit.
- 1:43:50No, it's cut off by Mazuratsky and he makes the play at first in time.
- 1:43:54Listen to the allure of appreciation from the fans here at Forbes Field.
- 1:44:00Cleon Jones lined that ball to right and Mazuratsky went back on the outfield grass,
- 1:44:06loved it and threw on in time to retire the runner.
- 1:44:10Mazuratsky's been doing that for all these many years here at Forbes Field.
- 1:44:14And he just robbed Cleon Jones, the first man up for the Mets in the eighth inning.
- 1:44:19That brings up Art Shansky.
- 1:44:21Shansky's 2 for 3 today.
- 1:44:22He's single to drive in a run, by the center and double.
- 1:44:28One man out, nobody on base.
- 1:44:31The score tied 3-3 in the eighth inning.
- 1:44:35D-Blast has been in all the way.
- 1:44:37He's gotten stronger as he's gone.
- 1:44:39Here's a fly ball to center and Alou moves up.
- 1:44:41He's there waiting for that one.
- 1:44:43Mattie Alou takes the fly ball.
- 1:44:46So, two pitches and two away here in the eighth and Ron Swabota's coming up.
- 1:44:51Grounded out, doubled and was called out on strike.
- 1:44:56In the National League at the end of seven innings of play at County Mac Stadium in Philadelphia.
- 1:45:01It's the Phils two and the Chicago Cubs nothing.
- 1:45:03Ferguson Jenkins against Chris Short.
- 1:45:05That's the only other action going in the National League just now.
- 1:45:09In the American League, the Boston Red Sox lead the Yankees 1-0 in the middle of the second.
- 1:45:13Gary Peters against Mel Sadelmar.
- 1:45:15Pitch is low and away to Swabota now for ball one.
- 1:45:22Two men out, nobody on.
- 1:45:23Here's a swing and a ground ball to Maseratky at second.
- 1:45:26He has it. Plays the first.
- 1:45:28The Mets are out in the eighth.
- 1:45:30It's no runs, no hits, no errors and none left.
- 1:45:33In the middle of the eighth inning, the score is the Mets three and the Parrots three.
- 1:45:39Well Mets fans, we're into another season and we hope a really great one for your ball club.
- 1:45:50Friendly Freddy is also going into another season of car washing, a really great one for his club.
- 1:45:56Friendly Freddy's is the only fully automatic car wash in Saratoga Springs.
- 1:46:01Their motto is, nothing for you to do but sit back and relax.
- 1:46:05Friendly Freddy's car wash offers you the quickest and most convenient car washing service in Saratoga.
- 1:46:11They're located on High Rock Avenue, one block off Lake Avenue.
- 1:46:15At Friendly Freddy's they have a facility for everyone.
- 1:46:18A coin operated wash for the do-it-yourselfers, the most up-to-date vacuum cleaners,
- 1:46:23and of course the automatic car wash.
- 1:46:26You just drive in, stay in your automobile, and before you know it,
- 1:46:30the car is coming out cleaned and, if you like, waxed, all this service for only $1.25.
- 1:46:35Wax is 50 cents extra.
- 1:46:38Believe me, Mets fans, this is a bargain with today's inflated prices.
- 1:46:42Come on in and give them a try.
- 1:46:47For the New York Mets, Mike Jorgensen has come in to play first place now.
- 1:46:51So Jorgensen is in, in place of Shamsky, so Bota stays in right field.
- 1:46:57We go to the bottom of the eighth and it'll be Richie Hebner up to lead off the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:47:02Hebner has struck out double and popped out so far, facing Tom Seaver, who's been in all the way.
- 1:47:09Parts have had eight hits in the Mets, they've had seven.
- 1:47:12He was, he's hit deep to right field, so Bota is in the warning track and makes the catch.
- 1:47:17In front of the wall, in right field.
- 1:47:21So there's one away and Roberto Clemente is coming up.
- 1:47:24He's had two base hits today, he's two for three, he's driven in two of the Pirates' three runs.
- 1:47:29He's in the five innings to play in the American League, the Cleveland Indians two and the Baltimore Orioles one.
- 1:47:34Sam McDowell against Dave McNally.
- 1:47:36The open A's are at Kansas City against the Royals at Blue Moon Odom, 15 and six, against Wally Bunker, 12 and 11.
- 1:47:44At the end of four innings to play, the Minnesota Twins three, the Chicago White Sox nothing.
- 1:47:48Jim Perry, 20 and six against Tommy John, nine and 11.
- 1:47:52The receiver's pitch to Clemente is low for a ball.
- 1:47:55At the end of three innings, the Cal Angels four and the Milwaukee Brewers nothing.
- 1:47:59Andy Messersmith, 16 and 11 against Lou Krause, seven and seven.
- 1:48:04The Detroit Tigers are at Washington tonight.
- 1:48:07Detroit defeated Washington in the presidential opener yesterday.
- 1:48:11Swing and a ground ball up the middle and it's going through for a base hit.
- 1:48:14Clemente has three.
- 1:48:17Tommy Agee returns the ground ball.
- 1:48:21So now Clemente's on his first with one man out and big Willie Starjow coming up.
- 1:48:25No action at this moment in the Med Bullpen, but we're going to get some any second.
- 1:48:31Starjow get into a double play, slide to right and drive it into a fourth play so far today.
- 1:48:37The score is tied 3-3. That was the ninth hit for the Pirates today.
- 1:48:43Ron Taylor gets up and begins to throw in the Med Bullpen.
- 1:48:48Diva works off the stretch to the left hand by the Starjow curve ball.
- 1:48:52It's in the air to deep left, but Jones has it lined up.
- 1:48:56Leon Jones is there halfway. Clemente returns to first.
- 1:49:00There are two men out.
- 1:49:02That'll bring up Hal Oliver.
- 1:49:04He tripled all the way to the iron gate in right, bowled out to third and lined out to left.
- 1:49:10In the National League, Houston is at San Francisco playing at Candlestick later this afternoon.
- 1:49:15The Man of Rays are at San Diego tonight against the Padres.
- 1:49:18Cincinnati Reds are at Los Angeles tonight against the Dodgers.
- 1:49:21Cincinnati and the preseason opener defeated Montreal yesterday.
- 1:49:26The St. Louis Cardinals have not yet opened.
- 1:49:28They will open tomorrow in Montreal against the Expos.
- 1:49:34Right here the score is tied 3-3 and Hal Oliver is up.
- 1:49:39He gets 2.85 with 17 home runs last year for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:49:44Debrie checks and deals.
- 1:49:46Here's a swing and a foul ball. It's going to go out of play.
- 1:49:48It's a stand behind third base.
- 1:49:50Strike one to Oliver.
- 1:49:52Only Ron Taylor, the right-hander, throwing in the med bow pen.
- 1:50:02Jorgensen holding against the runner at first base.
- 1:50:10That's outside for a ball.
- 1:50:12Talking with baseball writers yesterday,
- 1:50:14Manager Gil Hodge has volunteered the opinion that he considered Mike Jorgensen
- 1:50:18one of the finest defensive first basemen he's ever seen.
- 1:50:29Pitch to Oliver.
- 1:50:30Throwing it on the ground to second base.
- 1:50:32Taken by Garrett.
- 1:50:33He goes to Jorgensen and the side is out.
- 1:50:36No runs are hit. No errors and one left.
- 1:50:39At the end of eight full innings of play, the score is the New York Mets 3
- 1:50:44and the Pittsburgh Pirates 3.

- 1:51:44The New York Mets are up in the ninth inning,
- 1:51:52and it's the number 7 man in the batting order, Wayne Garrett, to lead off.
- 1:51:56He has struck out, flied to right, and was intentionally walked.
- 1:51:59Officially 0 for 2, with the pitcher scheduled about third in the inning,
- 1:52:03Ron Taylor continues to throw in the med bow pen.
- 1:52:06Blast, with the pitcher sit on the ground to first place,
- 1:52:08taken out the bag by Oliver for the outs.
- 1:52:11A scribbling ground ball just to the bag in fair territory,
- 1:52:15Oliver simply had to put his foot on the bag when he got it.
- 1:52:18We all want America the Beautiful.
- 1:52:21Let's not have it another way.
- 1:52:23The people at Rhine Goal ask you to keep America Beautiful.
- 1:52:36Ed Krainpool has moved out on deck now with Grote at the plate.
- 1:52:40Here's a swing and a miss for strike one.
- 1:52:48Jerry Grote has gone 0 for 3 today.
- 1:52:52Ron Taylor still throwing in the bow pen.
- 1:52:55It's high and away for a ball.
- 1:52:58So Krainpool is out there to bat for Siever,
- 1:53:02for Siever to be credited with a victory.
- 1:53:07The Mets would have to take the lead in this inning if Krainpool bats for them.
- 1:53:15Here's a 1-1 pitch. It's low, 2-1.
- 1:53:20Joe Gibbon is throwing now the left-hander down the bow pen for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:53:25Joe Gibbon.
- 1:53:33Here's a 2-1 pitch. Swung on and fouled back.
- 1:53:37Steve Blass said before yesterday's ball game that of the Mets,
- 1:53:42he always thought Krainpool hit him better than anybody.
- 1:53:52We're in the ninth and the score is tied, 3-3.
- 1:53:57The counter Grote is 2-2.
- 1:54:00Blass with the pitch, swung on and missed strikeout number 8 for the Parrot right-hander.
- 1:54:05So there are two Mets out, nobody on.
- 1:54:08The ball is up to bat for Tom Siever.
- 1:54:16Pitch is low for a ball.
- 1:54:22Tommy Agee is on deck.
- 1:54:25Mets batting in the ninth.
- 1:54:28Fouled back.
- 1:54:35That's one way to get out of the way of it, Ralph.
- 1:54:37Hey, Lindsey, they really broke that glass right over here and hit that glass just to your right.
- 1:54:41It does that. I was aware of that.
- 1:54:451-1 to count to Krainpool.
- 1:54:52Swung on and fouled off. So it's 1-2.
- 1:54:58Two men out, nobody on base. May is going out now for a word with Steve Blass.
- 1:55:04I got news for you. This game is not official.
- 1:55:07Is that not a Chubb-Vinnie baseball?
- 1:55:08This is not a Chubb-Vinnie baseball. It has Warren Giles name on it. This game can count.
- 1:55:13Warren Giles is not the president of the National League.
- 1:55:22Krainpool now measures his stance. Here's the 1-2 pitch.
- 1:55:27Swung out and this strikes out number nine for Blass. Mets are out in the ninth inning.
- 1:55:34Krainpool goes down swinging. It's no runs, no hits, no errors and none left.
- 1:55:38In the middle of the ninth inning, the score is still tied. The Mets three and the Pirates three.

- 1:56:15John Hancock introduces Rich Man coverage for the Not Yet Rich,
- 1:56:20a life insurance package with an initial benefit of $100,000, very good for the ego, and you can afford it.
- 1:56:27If you're 24, you may have to pay about $38 a month.
- 1:56:31Ask Ben Yanklowich about Rich Man coverage, $100,000 worth of life insurance that'll make you feel like a million.
- 1:56:37Call Ben, 783-5571 or write Ben Yank, Box J, Latham, New York, 12110 for more details.
- 1:56:47John Hancock, huh?
- 1:56:50We'll be going down to the bottom half of the ninth inning.
- 1:56:53Ron Taylor has come in to do the pitching for the New York Mets.
- 1:56:57Ron Taylor, Tom Seaver pitched the first eight innings, gave up three runs on nine, hit, struck out five, walked nine.
- 1:57:05Seaver cannot be the winning or the losing pitcher in this fall game.
- 1:57:10It'll be Gene Alley coming up to lead off for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 1:57:14Door tie, 3-3.
- 1:57:19Ron Taylor was in 59 games for the New York Mets last year.
- 1:57:31Here's a swing and a miss for strike one.
- 1:57:34Taylor had an appearance in the championship series and was in the World Series as well in two games.
- 1:57:43Two appearances in the championship series and two in the World Series.
- 1:57:49Sidearm pitches it on the ground to short.
- 1:57:51Harrelson up and over to Jorgensen in time and Alley is out.
- 1:57:57Now Jerry May.
- 1:58:00He had a sacrifice by the right in the second as Robota turned in a circus catch of the ball.
- 1:58:06He fired the center in the fifth and was caught out on strikes in the seventh after having fouled the ball.
- 1:58:11Down the left field corner, barely fouled out of the park.
- 1:58:16Get on the ground, back to the mound.
- 1:58:18Taken by Taylor, over to Jorgensen and Jerry May is out.
- 1:58:23So there are two men out and Bill Mazurowski is coming up now.
- 1:58:27Popped the third, grounded out to Seaver unassisted and fly to right.
- 1:58:34The Pirate fans have never forgotten that it was Mazurowski who won a World Championship for them back in 1960.
- 1:58:44With a ninth inning home run over the left field wall, it sailed over the head of Yankee left fielder Yogi Berra.
- 1:58:52As it's going to drive to the left, Leon John's going back and makes the catch on the run in front of the scoreboard for the out.
- 1:58:58We'll be going to extra innings in the ninth.
- 1:59:01No runs, no hits, no errors and none left.
- 1:59:04The score at the end of nine full innings is tied.
- 1:59:08The Mets three and the Pirates three.
- 1:59:11Having a problem in deciding where to take your group on its next outing?
- 1:59:15If so, let the Mets group sales department solve it for you.
- 1:59:18This department is manned by experts in handling both men's and women's groups.
- 1:59:22These same specialists encourage community and civic organizations, social and fraternal clubs, youth, family and athletic groups

- 2:00:12Call away today and enjoy a day at Shea.
- 2:00:21Coming in here now for the play-by-play, Ralph Keimer.
- 2:00:28Thank you, Lindsay Nelson. Once again, hi everyone. Tommy Agee will lead off on the ball game now here in the extra innings.
- 2:00:33The Mets have never gone to extra innings on opening day and they have never won an opening day game.
- 2:00:39So another real minor milestone, I guess you'd have to say, Lindsay.
- 2:00:44Well, it's all of that. It's been an exciting day of baseball, indicative, I think, of what we can expect all season long.
- 2:00:51Here's a final score on that Philadelphia game and a big one for the Phillies as Chris Short making a comeback.
- 2:00:58Was the winning pitcher over Chicago by a score of 2-0. He pitched a five-hitter. Ferguson Jenkins was the losing pitcher.
- 2:01:04Chris Short had a back operation last year and missed all the season.
- 2:01:09So the Phillies looking for pitching and finding it right there with their veteran left-hander, Chris Short.
- 2:01:15Right here at 3-3, the Mets had nine hits, the Mets had seven, and Tommy Agee, the first batter and the first pitch by Triggy Hardenstein.
- 2:01:24Pardon me, but Steve Blask has swung on a missed strike one.
- 2:01:28Agee two for four in the game. He has scored two runs.
- 2:01:33Now Blask back and the pitches hit hard by the third baseman in the left field and Tommy Agee now three for five.
- 2:01:40Tommy makes the turn at first and the Mets have a runner at first base with no one out here in the 10th inning.
- 2:01:46That'll bring up shortstop Bud Harrelson.
- 2:01:51Bud has a base hit and four times up. He dropped a single in the right field his last time up.
- 2:02:03Pirates are looking for the sacrifice attempt. Richie Hebner, the third baseman, about 60 feet away, moves up even closer and the pitches spunted and spunted foul back out of play.
- 2:02:14Strike one.
- 2:02:21Joe Given and now Triggy Hardenstein again throwing in the bullpen for the Pirates.
- 2:02:27Steve Blask going here in the 10th inning. He has outlasted Tom Seaver.
- 2:02:36Steve, one 16, lost 10 last year and the right end are now set. Again the third baseman in close expecting a bun.
- 2:02:43Here comes the first baseman. The ball is a pitch out and it's ball one.
- 2:02:48On the play evidently the first baseman, Al Oliver, missed the sign for the pitch out and was charging in.
- 2:02:53He was nowhere near the bag and there was no attempt at all for play at first. No one there.
- 2:02:59Tommy Agee the runner at first base. One ball, one strike count.
- 2:03:05Now Blask with a throw to first base but Agee back easily. It was a calling card throw, nothing on it.
- 2:03:13Blask sets up again and the pitch. It is way inside. Harrelson has to spin around and go to the ground to get out of the way.
- 2:03:22Two balls and one strike. That ball couldn't have missed him very far and of course the Mets would have hoped that it had hit him.
- 2:03:34Two balls, one strike.
- 2:03:41Now Blask again sets up and the pitch. It is bunned out towards first base. It's a good bun.
- 2:03:47Oliver makes the tag on Harrelson as he comes by. There was no chance for play for a force play at second.
- 2:03:53Agee is now at second base in scoring position with one away in the batter coming up in the top of the 10th inning is Joe Foy.
- 2:04:07Now the Sun is shining brightly in Pittsburgh. This has been, as Lindsey said, an extremely exciting ball game.
- 2:04:16Here's the pitch and a curveball breaks over a called strike. Joe Foy punching on it. Strike one count.
- 2:04:27Blask has a very strong ball game. He has struck out nine while giving up eight bases. He has walked two one intentionally.
- 2:04:37Now the next pitch, it is swung on and missed and again the curve strikes two. Mets have Pleon Jones on deck and they have the go ahead run at second base.
- 2:04:48Tommy Agee there with one out in the top of the 10th.
- 2:04:56Now the signs are out and a play on at second base. Agee back easily.
- 2:05:03Shortstop Gene Alley coming over to take the throw from Blask. It was not even a bit close.
- 2:05:13Two strike count. Agee off the bag at second. And the pitch. It is low and away. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:05:23Jogi Berra, the coach at first base, yelling encouragement to Joe Foy, Eddie Osten, guarding the runner at second base from his third base coaching spot.
- 2:05:40One ball, two strikes. Blask all set to go and the pitch. It has popped up. The catcher, Jerry May, under the ball right by his catcher's position and he makes the catch.
- 2:05:56So Joe Foy is out. That gives the firester second out in the 10th inning and it brings up Pleon Jones with the go ahead run at second base.
- 2:06:06And we pause for station identification. This is the New York Mets baseball network.
- 2:06:11You're listening to New York Mets baseball on WKAJFM 102.3 in Saratoga Springs, New York, the home of the New York Mets.
- 2:06:20Lindsey Nelson and Bob Murphy from Forbes Field in Pittsburgh. A 3-3 ball game. The Mets were the runner at second. Two men out top of the 10th.
- 2:06:28Matters, Pleon Jones. Pleon has a double and three official times up, a run vetted in, and he had a base hit taken away by Bill Mazurowski, the second baseman.
- 2:06:37And the first pitch by Blask is high at ball one. Pleon also has walk.
- 2:06:45Right here, Lindsey, a 340 batter off last year's performance. First base is open.
- 2:06:51And Mike Jorgensen, the on-deck batter, a rookie. Danny Murtaugh is having his pitcher work to Pleon Jones.
- 2:07:01Now the one-hole pitch. A check swing ground ball out toward the hole at second base. Mazurowski back in deep right field. He feels the ball, makes the play.
- 2:07:08Now a play at the plate. He's coming in to score. He's tagged out.
- 2:07:13And it's time to die. Bill Mazurowski going back in the shallow right field to pick that ball up on the ground.
- 2:07:24He knew he had no play at first base. He turned and flipped the ball home. A little easy throw. The best he could do.
- 2:07:31It was perfect right on line. And then he goes, hoping to surprise Bill Mazurowski and the Pirates at Tantami AGN.
- 2:07:39And there was an easy out at the plate as a tag was made by Jerry May. In the inning, no runs. One hit, no errors. Pardon me. Two hits, no errors.
- 2:07:48And one man left on. And the score. In the middle of the tenth inning, the New York Mets 3, the Pittsburgh Pirates 3.
- 2:07:56The finest in Italian cuisine and a wide array of steaks, chops, and seafood await your dining pleasure at Mangino's Restaurant, located on the south end of Saratoga Lake.
- 2:08:05But there's a big difference between just ordinary Italian or American cuisine and Mangino's fine food.
- 2:08:11At Mangino's, your order is never prepared hours before. Mangino's realize that good food cannot be hurried.
- 2:08:18And they ask you to give them a little time to prepare it properly. All dishes are prepared to your order when your order is placed never before.
- 2:08:25And it hasn't been simmering away for hours or minutes. That's the big difference at Mangino's.
- 2:08:30Why not enjoy eating Italian food the way it should be savored and dine at Mangino's Restaurant, located on the south end of Saratoga Lake on Route 9P, just two miles from Route 9.
- 2:08:41A complete line of Italian specialties are served to tempt the palate, and their steaks and chops and seafood are equally as delightful.
- 2:08:48If you're planning a party or a banquet for up to 75, call Mangino's for their special party menu.
- 2:08:54That's Mangino's Restaurant, the home of truly fine foods on Route 9P at the south end of Saratoga Lake.
- 2:09:05We're going down to the bottom of the 10th inning. The Pirates coming up, the score tied 3-3, and a pinch hitter for Steve Blass is going to be Bob Robertson.
- 2:09:14Bob, last year, started the season with the Pirates, batted 2-0-8, was sent down to the minor leagues where he batted 2-61, but with 34-0 run.
- 2:09:23Robertson, a power hitter, utility ball player, first baseman, third baseman outfielder, and a power hitter, batting for Steve Blass.
- 2:09:32So both starting pitchers, Tom Seaver and Steve Blass, are out of the ballgame, and the game will be in the hands of Ron Taylor, and later on, if it goes into the 11th, a relief pitcher, the Pirates.
- 2:09:43And the first pitch to Robertson, going on and missed like one.
- 2:09:48Robertson had a tremendous spring training. He batted 4-41 in the spring with 3 home runs and 14 runs batted in.
- 2:10:01And the pitch, breaking ball just outside, it's one ball and one strike.
- 2:10:09Robertson has changed his batting position in the batter's box. He has moved up on the plate.
- 2:10:15He used to be so far away that as a full hitter, he had no chance to reach the outside pitch, but now he is right on top of the plate.
- 2:10:22One-one pitch, a fastball at the knees, and it's in for a called strike.
- 2:10:27One and two.
- 2:10:33Ron Taylor, batter and relief pitcher, on the mound for the Mets, and plays to Tom Seaver. Ron came in the ballgame in the ninth, retired the Pirates 1-2-3.
- 2:10:42Now the 1-2 pitch, it has hit high in the air and fouled territory, out of play.
- 2:10:50The Cal Angels have added four runs. They now lead Milwaukee 8-0, that game being played in Milwaukee after 3-1-2 innings.
- 2:10:58Minnesota out in front of Chicago by a score of 6-0 after 6.
- 2:11:03One ball, two strikes, Taylor again back, and the pitch is just low. It's 2-2.
- 2:11:12Boston 2, the Yankees nothing after 3.
- 2:11:16Cleveland 2, Baltimore 1 after 6.
- 2:11:21The end of 1-1-1, Kansas City 1.
- 2:11:24Two balls, two strikes, tie game 3-3, bottom of the 10th no one out.
- 2:11:28And the pitch to Robertson, is it high in the air to center field, powering high fly ball.
- 2:11:35Tommy Agee pounding the glove is under it and he makes the catch.
- 2:11:40One away in the bottom half of the 10th and that brings up Matty Alou.
- 2:11:45Alou has doubled and tripled in four times up, he has scored two runs.
- 2:11:50And he's batting for the first time against Ron Taylor.
- 2:12:00Alou being played just about straight away by the Mets.
- 2:12:04Breon Jones near the line in left field, shaded over just a little bit.
- 2:12:09And Taylor's first pitch, it is bounced foul by the third baseman Joe Foy.
- 2:12:19And it's strike one.
- 2:12:26Frank Osiak, the third base coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:12:31Don Leppard at first base for the Pirates.
- 2:12:34Now the pitch, grounded right back to Ron Taylor.
- 2:12:39He takes the one hopper, throws the first base, two men away.
- 2:12:43Now with two men out in the bottom of the 10th inning, the batter will be the third baseman Richie Hebner.
- 2:12:48Richie has a double and four official times up in the game.
- 2:12:52Hebner, a left hand batter, just returned from being best man at his brother's wedding up in Boston.
- 2:13:11And the first pitch by Taylor, high fastball, up above the eyes it's one ball no strikes.
- 2:13:17Fetal Delphiore defeated Chicago 2-0 today.
- 2:13:23Chris Short pitching a five hitter, Ferguson Jenkins a losing pitcher.
- 2:13:30Now the 1-0 pitch, again high and away, ball two.
- 2:13:35Doug McGraw is loosening up in the bullpen for the Mets.
- 2:13:40Triggy Hardenstein, a right hander, throwing in the bullpen for the Pirates.
- 2:13:44Pirates will have a new pitcher if the game goes to the 11th.
- 2:13:51Now a 2-0 pitch to Hebner.
- 2:13:54It is outside and high, ball three.
- 2:13:56The on deck batter is Roberto Comenny.
- 2:13:59So it's 3-0 to Hebner with Comenny due up next.
- 2:14:04Comenny's had a hot day today.
- 2:14:06Taylor now on top of the pitching rubber checking out the sign.
- 2:14:16Here's the windup and the 3-0 delivery.
- 2:14:18It is swung on but grounded foul.
- 2:14:21Strike one.
- 2:14:23Hebner turned loose with two men away in the bottom of the 10th inning.
- 2:14:27And he grounded the ball foul and the count now three balls and one strike.
- 2:14:37Mets opening up their first game of the 70th season with an extra inning ball game.
- 2:14:42Now swinging the foul back into the stands and the count fills out to three and two.
- 2:14:50Starting pitcher is Houston at San Francisco.
- 2:14:52Larry Dirkert a 20-game winner last year against Gaylord Perry a 19-game winner last year.
- 2:15:03And the 3-2 pitch to Hebner.
- 2:15:05Swung on and missed strike three and Ron Taylor has retired his first six batters.
- 2:15:09That's his first strikeout.
- 2:15:13And the score at the end of 10.
- 2:15:15The New York Mets three.
- 2:15:17The Pittsburgh Pirates three.
- 2:15:19Three, two, clear the prop.
- 2:15:30Saratoga Unicom, that's the 5-1-2-4-1-1-2-1-2-2.
- 2:15:36Have you ever wanted to learn to fly?
- 2:15:38That could be you this summer taking a friend for a local scenic flight.

- 2:16:01The Richmore Aviation Flight School is an FAA approved flight school
- 2:16:05and is located at the Saratoga County Airport three miles west of the Performing Arts Center on Geyser Crest Road
- 2:16:11in Saratoga and the Tri-Cities, phone 885-5354.
- 2:16:15Or in Glens Falls, phone 792-9949.
- 2:16:20That's the 5-1-2-4-5-Saratoga Unicom on the way 32.
- 2:16:30Struck Hardenstein in the ballgame now as the pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates
- 2:16:34in relief of Steve Blass who pitched the first ten innings,
- 2:16:37allowed three runs on nine hits, struck out nine and walked two, one of them intentionally.
- 2:16:43Twiggy Hardenstein, a right-hander, had one time with the Chicago Cubs.
- 2:16:49Last year with the Pirates he was in 56 games.
- 2:16:53He had a record of five wins and four losses and an earned run average of 3.94.
- 2:16:59He is a native Texan and he weighs 150 pounds.
- 2:17:04Twiggy Hardenstein in relief of Steve Blass.
- 2:17:08Mike Jorgensen will be leading off for the Mets.
- 2:17:10The sun is shining brightly here in the late afternoon at Forbes Field in Pittsburgh.
- 2:17:15Burned off the overcast entirely.
- 2:17:18Blue sky overhead with a few fleety white clouds up there.
- 2:17:25Jorgensen's up for his first time.
- 2:17:28He's a left-hand batter and the pitch is in there for a called strike.
- 2:17:43Hardenstein last year against the Mets, one none and lost one.
- 2:17:48His lifetime record against the Mets is two wins and one loss.
- 2:17:52His lifetime major league record, 16-13.
- 2:17:55Swing and a base hit into left field for Jorgensen.
- 2:17:58Fielded out there by Starjulin, played back.
- 2:18:00Jorgensen turns and holds with a single to left.
- 2:18:04So the Mets again have the tire-breaking run on that first base with nobody out and Ron Swaboda is coming up.
- 2:18:16Swaboda today, grounded out, double, was caught out on strikes and grounded out.
- 2:18:25Last year in a memorable appearance here he had a grand slam home run off Twiggy Hardenstein to win a ballgame for the New York Mets.
- 2:18:41Tire-tatcher protect against the possible sacrifice.
- 2:18:44He squares and takes the pitch in for a called strike.
- 2:18:47Swaboda was around a bud. He's looking down to Seinman.
- 2:18:51Eddie Yosef third to see if it's still on.
- 2:18:54Wayne Garrett is on deck.
- 2:19:06Here's the pitch and it's blended right out in front of the plate.
- 2:19:09Played second base and he is safe.
- 2:19:12As the throw was high, Alley had to go up and Jorgensen slid in underneath.
- 2:19:17So Swaboda is on it first, Jorgensen is on it second.
- 2:19:21It is an error charged against the catcher, Jerry May on the throw.
- 2:19:27A sacrifice and an error and that brings up Garrett now with runners at first and second.
- 2:19:32They still have to protect against the sacrifice.
- 2:19:35Scores tied 3-3 and we're on the top of the 11th inning.
- 2:19:39Garrett today struck out, fly it out, was intentionally walked and grounded out.
- 2:19:44Garrett at the plate and Grote on deck.
- 2:19:47Third baseman Richie Hebner playing in the cutout of the grass at third now
- 2:19:51in anticipation of a bunnet tip by Wayne Garrett.
- 2:19:56Hardenstein working off the stretch.
- 2:19:58Garrett squares, bunch the ball to the first base side of the mound.
- 2:20:01The play is at first. It is a sack moving the runners up.
- 2:20:05It was second baseman Bill Mazurowski who took the throw at first.
- 2:20:09So now Jorgensen is at third, Swaboda is at second, one man out and Grote coming up.
- 2:20:14And coming out on deck now is Ken Boswell to bat for Ron Taylor.
- 2:20:20Cal Coons is up and throwing in the bullpen along with Tug McGraw.
- 2:20:24We're in the top half of the 11th inning.
- 2:20:26Scores tied 3-3. The Mets with two runners in scoring position.
- 2:20:30Managing Danny Murator of the Power Springs is in field in now.
- 2:20:34And then field in for the Power Springs.
- 2:20:36They're going to choke off the run.
- 2:20:37They're going to walk Grote and pitch to Boswell.
- 2:20:39Grote is being intentionally walked with first base open.
- 2:20:42This is to set up the double play possibility on the course all around.
- 2:20:46Outside for one. Here it is. Outside ball to Grote.
- 2:20:58Outside ball three.
- 2:21:03Now the official score says no sack on Swaboda.
- 2:21:08Here's the pitch outside, ball four.
- 2:21:10So the bases are loaded on the intentional walk.
- 2:21:13Boswell will bat for Taylor.
- 2:21:17Boswell was not in the starting lineup today because of the fact that
- 2:21:21he had been away on military reserve duty in Texas.
- 2:21:24Gene Garber is up and throwing in the bullpen now for the Pittsburgh Parks
- 2:21:28along with Joe Gibbon, the left-hander.
- 2:21:31It's Gene Garber and Joe Gibbon. And here comes Danny Murator.
- 2:21:35He might want to make a switch to Joe Gibbon right here,
- 2:21:38a left-hand pitcher to work to Boswell.
- 2:21:41Boswell hangs in pretty well with left-hand pitching.
- 2:21:44Now Gil Hadgius doesn't have to leave him up there.
- 2:21:47Gil can switch off if he'd like to as far as rules of the game are concerned.
- 2:21:58Murator looks at the mound. Murator looks at the bullpen.
- 2:22:01That's all. And it's going to be the left-hander, Joe Gibbon.
- 2:22:04Gibbon is coming in now to replace Hardenstein to pitch to Boswell.
- 2:22:13This spring, Gibbon was in five games. He pitched only six innings.
- 2:22:17He allowed eight hits, five runs. All of them earned.
- 2:22:20He earned an average of 7.50.
- 2:22:23He is a veteran Major Leaguer who went from the Pirate to the Giants
- 2:22:28and came back, and now Clint Dunn will bat for Boswell.
- 2:22:32Gil Hadgius makes a switch. Boswell, by the way, is out of the ballgame.
- 2:22:38He cannot subsequently appear. And it is Clint Dunn batting for Boswell.
- 2:22:44Boswell had been put up as a batter for Taylor.
- 2:22:47You'll hear a reaction when Clint Dunn is announced.
- 2:22:50He played for many years here with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 2:22:55Oddly enough, in a newspaper story yesterday in Pittsburgh,
- 2:22:58he picked a Pirate to win the tennis.
- 2:23:03Joe Gibbon, with a lifetime record in the Majors of 56 wins and 58 losses,
- 2:23:09has a lifetime record against the Mets of six wins and four losses.
- 2:23:15Last year with Pittsburgh, he won five and lost one.
- 2:23:18With the Giants, he won one and lost three.
- 2:23:25That's enough for Clint Dunn.
- 2:23:29Lindsey Dunn says he gets food in four cities. Montreal, where he played.
- 2:23:34Pittsburgh, where he played. Atlanta, where he played.
- 2:23:39Houston, where he did not play.
- 2:23:44Do recall that was all a part of a deal when Dunn refused to report to Houston
- 2:23:49and was going to retire, finally was okay to play at Montreal,
- 2:23:54and then later on on the trading date came to the New York Mets.
- 2:23:59Gibbon is taking a sign from Jerry May.
- 2:24:02Left-hand pitcher working to a right-hand batter, and it's on the way.
- 2:24:06Swung on line at the middle court base hit.
- 2:24:08One run has scored as Garrett crosses the plate.
- 2:24:11Swoboda comes across two runs has scored, a play at third on Gordy.
- 2:24:15He slides in safely, holding it first is Clint Dunn.
- 2:24:18A single to center, two runs batted in.
- 2:24:21The New York Mets are out in front by a score of five to three.
- 2:24:26One pitch, one swing of the Clint Dunn and bat,
- 2:24:29and the New York Mets take a two-run lead in the top half of the 11th inning.
- 2:24:33The A.G. is up.
- 2:24:45A.G. is there.
- 2:24:47Jorgensen scored on Swoboda's court.
- 2:24:52Runners at first and third.
- 2:24:54Here's a swing and a miss for strike one.
- 2:24:58So Mike Jorgensen, the rookie, delivered a base hit leading off,
- 2:25:01and it scored the tire-breaking run here.
- 2:25:04Swoboda, who was on on an error, scored behind him.
- 2:25:07Gordy is at third.
- 2:25:13Given sets up.
- 2:25:15Pitch is low and it's blocked.
- 2:25:18Rolls up a third baseline, no advance.
- 2:25:21It hit in front of the plate and bounded off the chest protector,
- 2:25:24Jerry May, who kept it in front of him.
- 2:25:26It rolled up the third baseline.
- 2:25:28No advance from it. Runners to advance.
- 2:25:35Those runs were charged statistically against Twiggy Hardenstein.
- 2:25:44That's five, the Pirates three.
- 2:25:48Given pitch is low.
- 2:25:52Jerry Gordy is the runner at third.
- 2:25:54Don Clendenin is the runner at first.
- 2:25:57Bud Harrelson's on deck now for the New York Mets.
- 2:26:00This is a clean base hit up the middle off the bat of Don Clendenin.
- 2:26:08Swing and a ground ball to second base, taken there by Masurowski.
- 2:26:12Kicks the bag, throws the first double play, and the side is retired.
- 2:26:16A 4-3 double play on a ground ball near the bag at second.
- 2:26:20As the New York Mets picked up two runs on two hits,
- 2:26:24there was one error and there was one man left.
- 2:26:27And so in the middle of the 11th inning, the score is the Mets five and the Pirates three.
- 2:26:35Just two miles out of Lake Avenue on the old Skylovel Road,
- 2:26:38you'll find a small but growing business with big plans, Srage Gardens.
- 2:26:42The season is just about to begin at Srage, and while it's still a bit too early to do much planting,
- 2:26:47Ted and Doris invite you to look over their selection of rose bushes.
- 2:26:51They're available in many new varieties and all potted for you.
- 2:26:54Prices on rose bushes at Srage Gardens start at just $1.50.
- 2:26:58They have all the new AARS varieties with famous names like Jackson and Perkins, Star and Ball, and the American Rose, too.
- 2:27:07Ted Srage also has pansies in the market pack and would be more than happy to save some for you.
- 2:27:12Srage Gardens, just a little out of the way, but they offer big savings, and the trip is well worth the little time it takes.
- 2:27:19Keep listening to New York Mets baseball as the season develops.
- 2:27:22Ted and Doris Srage will have many specials for our Mets listeners.
- 2:27:26That's Srage Gardens, just two miles from downtown Saratoga, out Lake Avenue on the old Skylovel Road.
- 2:27:32A small business with big plans, Srage Gardens.
- 2:27:42Tug McGraw has come on to do the Mets pitching now.
- 2:27:45Tug McGraw will be pitching for the Mets, facing the Pirates in the bottom of the 11th.
- 2:27:49Roberto Clemente, Willie Starjul, and Al Oliver scheduled up here on the bottom of the 11th for the Pirates.
- 2:27:56Mike Jorgensen, who delivered a base hit leading off the top of the 11th and scored the tie-breaking run,
- 2:28:04was making his first appearance at the plate this season as a New York Mets.
- 2:28:08The Mets had him up at the tag end of the 1968 season when he batted 14 times and had two base hits.
- 2:28:14He was not with the Mets at any time last season. He is the only rookie on the Mets squad.
- 2:28:19And he was brought on as a late-hitting replacement for Ari Chamsky, who started at first base.
- 2:28:26Ron Taylor is out of the ballgame, of course, having pitched two innings and retired six consecutive batters.
- 2:28:35No runs, no hits. Struck out one and walked nine.
- 2:28:46Huckie Donatelli is asking the public address announcer to make an announcement asking fans to refrain from throwing debris onto the field out in right field.
- 2:28:54And here it is.
- 2:29:02Ron Taylor is the pitcher of record on the long side of a 5-3 score just now.
- 2:29:07Twiggy Hartenstein is the pitcher of record on the short side of that score.
- 2:29:11Manager Gil Hadgier is up on the steps of the Mets. I've got just retreating now.
- 2:29:15Most of the Mets are on the dugout steps.
- 2:29:17Bottom half of the 11th inning, Roberto Clemente is up. What a day he's had for the Pirates.
- 2:29:21He's three for four and he's not been through the three-powered run.
- 2:29:27McGraw's pitch, low for a ball.
- 2:29:30Nolan Ryan is up and throwing in the Mets both in now. Nolan Ryan and Cal Coontz.
- 2:29:36Hadgier's yelling something out to McGraw on the mound.
- 2:29:40Here's the 1-0 pitch and it's in there for a called strike. It's one and one.
- 2:29:52Big Willie Sturgill on deck.
- 2:29:58This will be a 1-1 pitch. It's low and McGraw goes behind two and one.
- 2:30:12Jerry Goody sends out the sign. Here's a 2-1 delivery.
- 2:30:17Little low now. McGraw's down behind three and one.
- 2:30:21Su Clemente who looks down to Simon Frankosziak at third. See if he's taking up. He's turned loose.
- 2:30:31Now it's trailed by two in the 11th. Swing and a foul ball. He was turned loose. Fouls it off. The count runs to three and two.
- 2:30:42Brad Aylier has a two-hole run this afternoon for the Minnesota Twins.
- 2:30:46He just came over to them from Ted Williams, Washington, and Sen. each with two men on.
- 2:30:53Brad Aylier, A-L-Y-E-A.
- 2:30:58Pitch is high and it's a walk. A leadoff. Walk to Clemente in the 11th inning.
- 2:31:04So don't go away. It's not over yet. Willie Sturgill coming up is the tying run at the plate.
- 2:31:14That is the first walk issued by MET Pitching today.
- 2:31:18The first walk issued by MET Pitching today comes in the 11th inning.
- 2:31:25Sturgill, who is 29 homeruns last year, is up. Today he is grounded into a double play,
- 2:31:30slide to right, grounded into a fourth play, and slide to left.
- 2:31:39The play is held up once again now. Debris continues to be thrown onto the playing field,
- 2:31:44out and right, all around Ron Swabota.
- 2:31:50And so members of the grounds crew are being sent out there to try to clean some of it up.
- 2:32:02There are five members of the grounds crew going out and right now to try to clean up some of the debris
- 2:32:07that has been thrown out of the right field stand.
- 2:32:19Gumpire is talking over at home plate while Chris Pellicudis is out there in short right field.
- 2:32:28Meanwhile, Doug McGraw continues to throw to try to keep his arm warm.
- 2:32:36I see there's a fellow coming out with a box that must be, well, I don't know,
- 2:32:41three feet deep, about two feet wide, and I hope they're not going to fill that box up.
- 2:32:46We'll be here until the rest of the afternoon where it's out.
- 2:32:49They could fill it up with what they have out there.
- 2:32:52Another fellow has a broom and he is sweeping the warning track.
- 2:32:59I suppose the most crushed fellow of all must be a youngster who jumped down out of the stands
- 2:33:05and hit the outfield totally unnoticed and unmolested while they cleaned up the debris.
- 2:33:10Nobody paid any attention to him whatsoever.
- 2:33:16Starjil is leaning on his bat at the plate.
- 2:33:20New York Mets and the Pittsburgh Pirates will be playing here again on Thursday night.
- 2:33:24We'll be on the air at 8 p.m. New York time to bring you that one.
- 2:33:27Then the Mets will move on to St. Louis.
- 2:33:29They'll play Friday night, Saturday afternoon, Sunday afternoon.
- 2:33:32Then the Mets will come home to New York.
- 2:33:34They'll play at Shea Stadium one week from today.
- 2:33:37That's Tuesday afternoon, April 14th, the Mets and the Pirates.
- 2:33:41Pitching coach Rube Walker has been out for a word with Doug McGraw.
- 2:33:45Walker's coming back to the dugout now.
- 2:33:48McGraw continues to throw.
- 2:33:50Now the grounds crew is leaving the field and we're just about ready to resume play.
- 2:33:56The Mets are leading the Pirates by a score of five to three.
- 2:34:01The Mets are batting in the bottom half of the 11th inning.
- 2:34:04There is nobody out and Roberto Clemente is the runner at first base as Willie Starjil steps in.
- 2:34:10There have been no pitchies yet to Starjil.
- 2:34:13He was suspended before a pitch was made to him.
- 2:34:23McGraw checks the runner.
- 2:34:26Here's the pitch.
- 2:34:27He's in there for a called strike to left-hand batter Willie Starjil.
- 2:34:34Still has made the change to the left-handed Doug McGraw with the full knowledge that Starjil and Oliver would be coming up both left-hand batters.
- 2:34:44There's a swing and a high pop back of third and Foy is there in foul territory at the moment.
- 2:34:49Makes the play in foul territory.
- 2:34:58Foul out the two.
- 2:35:00The left one rounded out second to first.
- 2:35:03This is just second here.
- 2:35:07Mike Jorgensen first place and playing behind the runner.
- 2:35:11It's not Clemente's run they're interested in.
- 2:35:13It's the run at the place they're interested in.
- 2:35:15That's the tying run.
- 2:35:18They're going to foul to Oliver.
- 2:35:21There's a play.
- 2:35:26Oliver has fouled out of the alley coming up.
- 2:35:29Lady's held up again.
- 2:35:30A jump shoot come out onto the field.
- 2:35:33Now it is tied one.
- 2:35:35It's in alley at the plate.
- 2:35:37McGraw started him off with a big curve ball.
- 2:35:41Now we're going to continue play with Park Policeman in the warning track in the outfield.
- 2:35:47McGrath takes his lead.
- 2:35:49The Mets are leading 5-3.
- 2:35:52And again now play is suspended.
- 2:35:59At one Park Policeman who had been a little busy on the other side of the park started off and they tell him stay out there.
- 2:36:06So he is.
- 2:36:09McGraw sets up.
- 2:36:10Alley is in and waiting.
- 2:36:11This is a strike one delivery.
- 2:36:13And it is put on the ground foul.
- 2:36:14Up the third base line out of play.
- 2:36:16Frank Osiak comes off the coaching lines at the third.
- 2:36:19Retreat the ball.
- 2:36:20Toss it back to McGraw.
- 2:36:21It's a two strike count out of Gene Alley.
- 2:36:23The Mets trying to get Alley out of there to end the ball game and get themselves an opening day victory here at Forbes Field.
- 2:36:29The Mets are leading by a score of 5-3.
- 2:36:34Roberto Clemente takes his lead at first.
- 2:36:37McGraw with a two strike pitch.
- 2:36:39Turn around and the ball game is over.
- 2:36:41The New York Mets for the first time in their history in their ninth year
- 2:36:45have won an opening day ball game.
- 2:36:47Defeating the Pittsburgh Pirates in 11 innings.
- 2:36:50In the ninth inning, 11 in the 11th inning, no runs, no hits, no errors.
- 2:36:55The walk in one left.
- 2:36:57And the New York Mets are the victors by a score of 5-3.
- 2:37:02And to tell you something of how this game went, here's Ralph Kiner.
- 2:37:06Well, it's only fitting I guess that the Mets win their first opening day game in a park where they won their very first game in 1962
- 2:37:14after nine consecutive losses.
- 2:37:16It was an exciting ball game. Well played.
- 2:37:18The Mets got two runs in the first inning off starting pitcher Steve Blass.
- 2:37:22Pirates tied it up with a run in the first and a run in the second.
- 2:37:24And it was 2-2 until the Mets then took the lead by a score and a run in the sixth inning.
- 2:37:29It was again tied up and it went that way until the 11th inning.
- 2:37:34Going 15 by Steve Blass to start the ball game, he went in and he gave up three runs.
- 2:37:39A lot of nine hits, struck out nine and walked two.
- 2:37:42And the closing pitch in the ball game was Chuck Hartenstein who came in the ball game in the 11th inning.
- 2:37:46In that 11th inning, Mike Jorgensen who was put in the ball game for defensive purposes came up the bat for the first time.
- 2:37:53He singled in the left field off the first pitch made by Hartenstein.
- 2:37:56On the play, Lawrence Loboto tried to sacrifice the runner down the second.
- 2:38:00He burned the ball right in front of the plate.
- 2:38:02And the big play of the ball game was when Jerry May threw the ball high at the second base for an error,
- 2:38:07allowing runners to be safe at both first and second on that slowing error.
- 2:38:12Wayne Garrett then laid down a perfect sacrifice, wanted to put runners at second and third.
- 2:38:17And then Jerry Grote, due up, was locked below the bases.
- 2:38:20Then manager Gil Hodges decided to put in Ken Boswell to pinch it for the pitcher.
- 2:38:27Boswell went to the plate and then Joe Gibbon was brought in a left-hander to pitch to Boswell.
- 2:38:32Boswell never got to the plate as he was taken out and Don Glenn-Denham was inserted in his place.
- 2:38:37And with the first pitch by Joe Gibbon, Don Glenn-Denham singled sharply through the middle of the diamond
- 2:38:43to drive in two runs and give the Mets a 5-3 victory.
- 2:38:47So the Mets out here, winning their very first ball game and winning it in their ninth year opening day first ball game win.
- 2:38:54Don Sievers started for the Mets. He won eight innings, allowed three runs, nine hits, struck out five, walked none.
- 2:38:59Ron Jenner picked up the victory and the late he went two innings, did not allow a base hit.
- 2:39:03Retiring all six batters he faced and Tug McGraw came in the ball game to pick up a save as he worked one inning,
- 2:39:09giving up no hits and allowing no runs.
- 2:39:1234,249 saw the ball game and the Mets now have won their first game of the 1970s season.
- 2:39:20A line score of the ball game, the Mets five runs, 11 hits, no errors.
- 2:39:25The Pittsburgh Barrett, three runs, a total of nine base hits, one error and they left six men on base.
