- 0:07SPEAKER_00: Hi, I'm Kate Dreston and welcome to Kate's Devotional Podcast.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: I drop my podcast every Wednesday.
- 0:13SPEAKER_00: It's always a five minute or less devotional to bring you encouragement as we try to live our lives according to the Bible.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: So glad you're here.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: Today's subject is patience.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: You know, we live in a society where things are always happening very quickly, most of the time instantly.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: Most people have never even known a world without computers.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: They've always been able to push a button or ask Google a question and it answers them immediately.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: There's no waiting and not much work to even get the answer they need.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And yes, it's convenient.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: It makes our lives so much easier.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: But that means we start to expect it in all areas of our life.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And we want that kind of quickness to be in everything.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: Let me give you an example.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: I was at Walmart the other day and we all know they hardly have any cashiers anymore.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: So we all have to do self-checkout and all the self-checkout stations were full.
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: So I'm standing in line.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: I'm tapping my fingers on my wallet thinking this person that I'm waiting on is so slow.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: They take each item, slowly look all over for the barcode, scan it, check the amount on the screen, carefully place it in their bag.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Well, this was just taking way too long.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: But finally they finish and I start moving through my items quickly because I'm the kind of person that likes to get in and out as fast as possible.
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: So I finish and I think all I have to do is pay and I am home free.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: So I put my credit card in and that thing starts beeping at me.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: It says something like transaction error or something like that.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Now I have to call an employee to come over and help me.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: And if that isn't embarrassing enough, the person waiting on me is like rolling their eyes.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Oh my, how quickly the tables turned.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: I didn't want to be patient for the person in front of me, and now I needed the person behind me to be patient while they waited on me.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: The problem happens when everyone feels like it's their right to receive everything they demand right then.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: And it's usually when we don't feel like we're getting our needs met fast enough that we not only get impatient, but angry.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: We've all seen those videos circulating out there where people don't get what they want fast enough at a fast food place, then they throw a fit.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: As Christians, we're different than the world.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Our hearts have been changed.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: We're filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: We're not going to be like the world.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: The fifth chapter in the book of Galatians talks about the character of someone who lives for the sinful nature and someone who's filled with the Holy Spirit.
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: They're exact opposites.
- 2:57SPEAKER_00: So in Galatians 5 verses 23 and 23a, and I'm going to read out of the New American Standard Bible 1995 update.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: It lists the fruits of the spirit that make up a godly character.
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: It says, but the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: You know, it's easier to be patient when we have empathy and compassion for others.
- 3:30SPEAKER_00: But that requires us to think outside of ourselves when we can't get everything we want exactly how we want it or when we want it.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: It requires flexibility.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: What illustrates patience better than driving, right?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: When was the last time you appreciated the patience of a driver behind you when searching for an unfamiliar address and you're driving real slow, you know, trying to read those house numbers?
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: But on the flip side, how patient were you with the driver ahead of you when time was short and they're going slower than the speed limit while they're trying to figure out where their turn is?
- 4:10SPEAKER_00: We all want God to be patient with us because we screw up all the time, and yet we're so stingy with our patience in dealing with others.
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Thankfully, you know, God is slow to anger.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: He is full of compassion and mercy.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And by showing others the patience we want from God, we're reflecting the Savior's love onto others.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: So today, as we're going about our days, try showing others the patience you want from God, whether it's with coworkers or fellow drivers, your kids, your extended family, you get the idea.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: As always, I'm going to be doing the same.
