- 0:00Speaker 1: To laugh or not to laugh, That is the question.
- 0:02Speaker 1: It's one more thing.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I'm strong and getty. Does anybody remember laughter?
- 0:11Speaker 1: So it's getting some attention in some circles for people
- 0:15Speaker 1: who watch Saturday Night Live Saturday Night this last weekend,
- 0:20Speaker 1: that there was so much of the cast of breaking
- 0:23Speaker 1: up and laughing during sketches. I mean, more than I've
- 0:26Speaker 1: ever seen ever combined in forty years watching the show
- 0:31Speaker 1: in one episode. And well, an interesting thing about that, Katie,
- 0:37Speaker 1: you're not old enough to have lived through the Carol
- 0:41Speaker 1: Burnett Show, which was a big popular sitcom, like the
- 0:43Speaker 1: number one show in America back in the seventies, but legendary.
- 0:47Speaker 1: These various clips were Harvey Corman and Tim Conway would
- 0:50Speaker 1: break each other up and laugh it. As a kid,
- 0:53Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it, and a lot of people enjoyed it,
- 0:55Speaker 1: and there's still popular YouTube clips. But it would seem
- 0:58Speaker 1: that there's a lit to how much of that you
- 1:01Speaker 1: can take based on Saturday Night Live. And we're gonna
- 1:07Speaker 1: play you some examples. There's some famous Saturday Night Live clips.
- 1:10Speaker 1: I mean, Jimmy Fallon used to break up a lot.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I mean, he just for some reason, some people can't
- 1:15Speaker 1: hold it together as well as other people. And I've
- 1:17Speaker 1: watched those clips over and over again and cried laughing.
- 1:20Speaker 1: It was so funny him breaking up. But it's just
- 1:22Speaker 1: like it's a good flavor. It can't be the whole
- 1:25Speaker 1: thing or something. Ryan Gosling, the host, for whatever reason,
- 1:29Speaker 1: he can't make it through thirty seconds of any sketch
- 1:32Speaker 1: without starting to laugh. That's an interesting personality thing, isn't
- 1:36Speaker 1: it that?
- 1:37Speaker 3: Yeah? I think it is. I don't think it's like
- 1:39Speaker 3: a question of discipline.
- 1:40Speaker 1: No oh no, no, no, no, no no, I don't
- 1:42Speaker 1: think so either. But it's pretty interesting that you're just
- 1:45Speaker 1: so giggly even though you've got the script, You've rehearsed
- 1:48Speaker 1: it over and over again, you know what's coming, and
- 1:52Speaker 1: you can't keep from busting.
- 1:54Speaker 3: Up, right, Yeah, and well.
- 1:58Speaker 1: I should have maybe started with this. I'm a Saturday
- 2:01Speaker 1: Night Live freak. I've been so into it since the
- 2:03Speaker 1: first year. I've watched documentaries about it, I watched the
- 2:06Speaker 1: podcasts where the old cast members talk about various sketches.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I mean, just I'm super into Saturday Night Live. And
- 2:13Speaker 1: Lorne Michaels hates it when people break up, like that's
- 2:16Speaker 1: his rule. Number one, do not break up during a sketch.
- 2:20Speaker 1: We wrote these sketches in a certain way to be funny,
- 2:22Speaker 1: in a certain way, they'll be funniest if you don't
- 2:25Speaker 1: break up, do it the way you're supposed to. I mean,
- 2:26Speaker 1: he he hates it. So I haven't seen this Ryan
- 2:30Speaker 1: Gosling thing. Is the laughter? Does it seem.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Forced or is it genuine?
- 2:34Speaker 1: No, it's definitely genuine, really, and most of it makes
- 2:36Speaker 1: me laugh because it's funny stuff happening. And then he
- 2:40Speaker 1: can't come from like but there, So the one that's
- 2:43Speaker 1: getting so much attention. And I read the article on
- 2:45Speaker 1: the Hollywood Reporter. Heidi Gardner, who's one of the regular
- 2:48Speaker 1: cast members completely lost it during the Beavis and butt
- 2:52Speaker 1: heead thing and which you're gonna hear a clip of
- 2:55Speaker 1: here in just a little bit. And it's really visual.
- 2:58Speaker 1: I don't know how well this is going to come across.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Very funny sketch, it's just it was. It was a
- 3:02Speaker 1: news program. It's like one of those town halls, political
- 3:05Speaker 1: town halls like you'd see on CNN or something like that,
- 3:07Speaker 1: and the host is talking to Keenan Thompson about AI
- 3:10Speaker 1: and stuff like that. Well, Ryan Gosling is over her shoulder,
- 3:14Speaker 1: looking exactly like Beavis from Beavis and butt Heead. I mean,
- 3:17Speaker 1: like the hair, the outfit, the everything like that. And
- 3:20Speaker 1: he's just sitting there very intently listening and everything like that.
- 3:23Speaker 1: And then and when Keenan Thompson points out, sorry, just
- 3:27Speaker 1: the person behind you looks just like Beavis, and Ryan
- 3:29Speaker 1: Gosling's looking around like, who's he talking? But when the
- 3:34Speaker 1: butt Heead character comes out, who's really got makeup on?
- 3:38Speaker 1: Hondey Gardner turns around and sees him for the first time,
- 3:40Speaker 1: and then she can't talk for like a minute. And
- 3:43Speaker 1: at some point the whole thing falls apart and it
- 3:45Speaker 1: just doesn't work anymore. But uh, and I've got some
- 3:48Speaker 1: of her quotes about that from a Hollywood reporter I
- 3:49Speaker 1: could hit you with. But let's listen to the clip first.
- 3:52Speaker 2: But if human beings created the AI, can't we just
- 3:56Speaker 2: program it to not do that? Well it de bits?
- 4:00Speaker 2: Oh my god, are you serious? What I think that's
- 4:07Speaker 2: a valid question.
- 4:08Speaker 1: No, Now, they're a gentleman behind you that looks like
- 4:12Speaker 1: butt Heead Professor.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Just because our audience members aren't as informed on the
- 4:17Speaker 2: issue as you doesn't make them butt.
- 4:20Speaker 1: Heads butt head from the cartoon he Beavis his friend.
- 4:25Speaker 2: I'd really like to move on and discuss AI. So
- 4:28Speaker 2: would you like him to move? Yes, thank you. The
- 4:32Speaker 2: man with the gray shirt and exposed gums, sir, kindly
- 4:58Speaker 2: move seats. She's talking to you. Oh, I'm sorry. I
- 5:13Speaker 2: am so sorry. I'm confused.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I'm just here.
- 5:16Speaker 2: To learn about AI, so you know.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And then they set to get him out of the
- 5:24Speaker 1: line of view of the AI experts, so he's not
- 5:26Speaker 1: they're not distracting. They the person who looks like Beavis,
- 5:29Speaker 1: whose name is like Ralph, and the guy because they
- 5:31Speaker 1: don't they don't even know what they're talking about. I've
- 5:33Speaker 1: never heard of this cartoon. They but they sit him
- 5:35Speaker 1: next to each other and they're sitting the same way,
- 5:36Speaker 1: and then they're laughing at things.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So I have I have two comments. Number One, it's
- 5:44Speaker 3: not her fault that Keenan Thompson is the funniest human
- 5:48Speaker 3: being ever and everything he says is hilarious. Secondly, the
- 5:53Speaker 3: answer is the audience that they loved it. They're laughing
- 5:57Speaker 3: so hard they were crying.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Stop.
- 5:58Speaker 3: There's the end of discussion and let's all have fun. People,
- 6:02Speaker 3: come on, I don't need more fun.
- 6:04Speaker 1: From the sound of it, it also kind of sounds
- 6:06Speaker 1: like they might have set her up for that, like
- 6:08Speaker 1: they hid from her what that cast member was gonna
- 6:10Speaker 1: look like, just for the shock value. Yeah, So what
- 6:13Speaker 1: I was wondering is because they do dress rehearsal right
- 6:16Speaker 1: before they do the show, which I can't imagine what
- 6:18Speaker 1: a long, grueling night that is. They do a full
- 6:20Speaker 1: dress rehearsal and then do the show. But they didn't
- 6:27Speaker 1: put the prosthetics on, and he had these prosthetics on
- 6:30Speaker 1: his face that made him look like, yeah, butt head
- 6:32Speaker 1: is an odd looking human, and so she hadn't seen
- 6:35Speaker 1: him before. And then she turns around asking to move
- 6:37Speaker 1: in that and then when she couldn't talk for like
- 6:38Speaker 1: a minute. But so that was like, I don't know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: a third of the way through the show, and Ryan
- 6:43Speaker 1: Gosling broke up every sketch well by the time he
- 6:45Speaker 1: gets toward the end of the show, and like the
- 6:47Speaker 1: sketches toward the end is like, all right, okay, can
- 6:51Speaker 1: you just I mean I actually was and Henry, I
- 6:54Speaker 1: was watching with my son Henry. He said that ruins
- 6:56Speaker 1: it when they laugh, and because we watched a whole
- 6:58Speaker 1: bunch of them, And I mean there must just be
- 7:00Speaker 1: a limit to it, because like famously, like I said,
- 7:03Speaker 1: those Carol Burnett clips are the most famous Carol Burnett
- 7:05Speaker 1: clips of all time of a very popular comedy show
- 7:08Speaker 1: when they would break each other up. Maybe it's just
- 7:10Speaker 1: a limit. Maybe that's it. Oh sure, yeah, yeah, odd
- 7:14Speaker 1: that Ryan Gosling cannot get through a line without laughing.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I think it's like people who cry a lot versus
- 7:23Speaker 3: people who cry a little. It's just it's part of
- 7:25Speaker 3: your your makeup. Which reminds me of my favorite conundrum, Katie.
- 7:28Speaker 3: I don't think I've ever hit this, hit you with this.
- 7:30Speaker 3: I may have if I have, forgive me, I'm getting old.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Have I ever done the I told you the one
- 7:38Speaker 3: about punching yourself in the face?
- 7:40Speaker 2: No?
- 7:41Speaker 3: Okay, So if I punch myself in the face so
- 7:45Speaker 3: hard it makes me cry, does that make me a
- 7:49Speaker 3: tough guy or a pussy.
- 7:56Speaker 2: Huh?
- 7:56Speaker 3: You know, I've never thought of that way.
- 7:58Speaker 1: That's like Einstein level right there. You gotta get Oppenheimer
- 8:05Speaker 1: on that one. It's got quantum mechanics in it or something.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It makes you a mental case.
- 8:08Speaker 3: But if you want to see a fun SNL skip skit.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Disneyland Jimmy fallon Disneyland where everybody's at the table and
- 8:20Speaker 2: they're discussing their trip to Disneyland and everybody cracks up.
- 8:22Speaker 2: It's a fun one to watch, it is well, I
- 8:25Speaker 2: guess that's it.
