- 0:03that keeps you from growing your money It's the very thing that's keeping
- 0:07you broke The news was filled with panic banks were
- 0:10failing people were losing jobs The stock market was in freefall you
- 0:14learn to fear money every time you think about investing a little voice
- 0:17in your head whispers What if you lose everything? What
- 0:21if it's all a scam? What if you make the wrong choice?
- 0:25The first step is to have what's called a fun account, an account
- 0:28that you put money in just for the process of seemingly
- 0:32wasting it. I'm Lloyd James Ross, seven-figure investor and entrepreneur, and
- 0:35I've helped thousands of business owners and professionals turn financial stress
- 0:40into success. If you're stuck in old money habits, overwhelmed by
- 0:43investing, or unsure where to start, this is for you. I'll
- 0:46give you the mindset and strategies to take control, grow
- 0:50your wealth, and achieve financial freedom. It's time to make your
- 0:53money work for you. There's a disease spreading everywhere. It
- 0:57doesn't care how much money you make, what job you have, or
- 1:01how smart you are. It infects business owners, CEOs,
- 1:06even self-made millionaires. You'd have a seven-figure
- 1:09income and still suffer from it. And
- 1:12the worst part? Most people don't even know they have
- 1:16it. This disease keeps you stuck. It makes you work
- 1:19harder while earning less. It convinces you that no matter
- 1:23how much money you make, it's still never enough.
- 1:27I see it every single day. If you're listening to this, chances are
- 1:31you have it too. But here's the kicker. This mindset isn't
- 1:35something you were born with. It was given to you, learned
- 1:39from your parents, absorbed from your environment and shaped
- 1:43by past experiences. And once it takes hold, it
- 1:46runs your life. It controls how you spend, how
- 1:50you save, how you invest or don't. So
- 1:54how does this mindset start? Where does it come from? Imagine
- 1:58this, it's 2008. You're a teenager, maybe
- 2:02in your early twenties. watching the world around you
- 2:05collapse. Your parents worked hard. They
- 2:09did everything right. They bought a house, had
- 2:12savings, maybe even a few investments. Life
- 2:16was comfortable until suddenly it wasn't. The
- 2:20news was filled with panic. Banks were failing.
- 2:23People were losing jobs. The stock market was in free fall. And
- 2:27then it hit your family. Maybe your parents lost their home.
- 2:31Maybe your dad got laid off. And maybe your mum was scrambling
- 2:35to keep the lights on. Maybe you remember the way they
- 2:38whispered at night about bills, about
- 2:42debts. about how they'd never let
- 2:45this happen again. So what did they do? They
- 2:48tightened their grip on every dollar. They stopped
- 2:52spending. They stopped taking risks. They made sure that
- 2:55every cent was accounted for. And you? You
- 3:00learned to fear money. To fear losing it.
- 3:04to believe that even when things are good, it can all come
- 3:07crashing down in an instant. Now, as an adult, you
- 3:11make money, but you never feel like you truly have
- 3:15it. You don't invest, because what if the market crashes
- 3:18again? You don't spend, because what if
- 3:21you need that money later? You work harder, thinking that
- 3:25more hours, more hustle is the only way to
- 3:28stay ahead. But no matter how much you earn, that
- 3:32feeling never really goes away. Because
- 3:35deep down, you're still living like the crash is
- 3:39just around the corner. Sound familiar? Well,
- 3:43maybe your story looks more like this. You grew up
- 3:47thinking your family was doing well. Your dad was smart with
- 3:50money. At least that's what everyone said. He talked
- 3:54about investments, had a solid job, maybe even dabbled in stocks
- 3:58or real estate. Money wasn't something you worried about until
- 4:02one day everything changed. Maybe it was a bad
- 4:05investment. Maybe it was a stock market crash. Maybe it was a business
- 4:08deal that went south. Whatever it was, the money vanished almost
- 4:13overnight. You saw your dad go from confident to
- 4:17crushed. You remember the arguments, the tension
- 4:21in the house, the way he stopped talking about money altogether, how
- 4:25the topic became off limits. Maybe he swore
- 4:29off investing completely. Maybe he became obsessed with
- 4:33never taking another risk, choosing instead to save
- 4:36every single penny, convinced that playing it safe
- 4:40was the only way to survive. And without realizing it,
- 4:44you inherited that fear. Now, every time you
- 4:47think about investing, a little voice in your head whispers, what
- 4:51if you lose everything like dad did? What
- 4:55if it's all a scam? What if you make the wrong choice?
- 5:00So you avoid it. You play it safe. You hold on
- 5:03to money like it could slip through your fingers at any
- 5:06moment. But here's the thing. Hoarding money isn't
- 5:10the same as building wealth. And the mindset that keeps
- 5:13you from growing your money It's the very thing that's
- 5:16keeping you broke. Or maybe you don't need to
- 5:19look at your parents. You've lived this yourself. You built something,
- 5:23you took a risk, started a business, maybe even made great
- 5:27money, but then something happened. A bad
- 5:30partnership, a failed investment, a market downturn,
- 5:34and suddenly everything you built disappeared. And
- 5:39every time you think about investing again, your stomach knots up.
- 5:43The memory of losing money haunts you. You
- 5:46hesitate. Second guess. You overthink.
- 5:50You stick to what feels safe. You
- 5:54don't invest. You don't delegate. You take full control,
- 5:58convinced that if you just work hard enough, you can prevent another
- 6:02failure. That's not how wealth is built.
- 6:06Maybe you're the kind of person who believes that if you want something done right,
- 6:10you gotta do it yourself. You don't outsource. You don't invest
- 6:14in help. You don't delegate. Because no one can do
- 6:17it as well as you can. But what happens? you
- 6:22run yourself into the ground. You spend all your time on tasks
- 6:25that don't actually build wealth. You trade time for money, working
- 6:29longer, working longer, working longer, thinking that if
- 6:32you just worked a bit harder or a bit longer, you'll
- 6:35finally feel financially secure. But no amount of
- 6:38hard work can fix this mindset. And the
- 6:42mindset is scarcity. Just
- 6:45quickly, if you're ready to take control of your finances but feel stuck on
- 6:48where to start, I have a solution. My book, Money Bias Happiness,
- 6:52simplifies investing and wealth building with practical steps to help
- 6:56you achieve financial peace. Get your copy via the
- 6:59link in the show notes and let's get your money working for you. Now back
- 7:02to the episode. Where does it come from? How does it happen? But most importantly,
- 7:06how do you move away from this scarcity money mindset? And
- 7:09it reminds me of a story that my dad told me many times from
- 7:13his past. He was a very successful insurance salesman. In
- 7:16fact, he sold 100 insurance policies face-to-face in
- 7:19a single week in his 20s. And so being
- 7:23number one, he would always win awards. And he'd go to the awards night,
- 7:26he'd be up at the top of the table, the best insurance salesman of the year. And
- 7:30one particular year, there was another chap who was at the top
- 7:33with him. And he said that at the event you get a trophy and
- 7:37they give you a big bottle of champagne to take back to your table.
- 7:40And he said one night he was observing this guy that, you know, for the first time he
- 7:44sold some insurance policies and was at the top of the table. And he was getting
- 7:47the same award as my dad. And he said he noticed something. He said
- 7:51this guy went back to his table and
- 7:54took the bottle of champagne and put it under the table. And
- 7:58I asked my dad, I said, what did you do with yours? He said, I took mine back to the
- 8:01table and I opened it up, popped it and
- 8:05gave everyone a glass and shared it with everyone. I
- 8:09said, dad, what's the lesson in this story? What are you trying to tell me here? He
- 8:12said that he never saw that other guy again. It
- 8:15was the only time he ever won top of the table. Why? Because
- 8:19when my dad went back to his table, he shared it with everyone and
- 8:23used the champagne, drank it because he knew he'd be back next year
- 8:26and he'll get another one. Whereas the other guy, he thought this is the last time
- 8:29I'll ever win this. I won't be back again and he never came back. So
- 8:33when it comes to your money, you have to understand that you'll get it again. It's
- 8:37free flowing. You'll find it. And most importantly, you
- 8:40can't take it with you. So just like champagne, share
- 8:44it, spend it and intelligently invest it. but
- 8:48try not to hoard it because it will come back and it'll just, it'll
- 8:52haunt you for the rest of your life. So what are some practical steps you can take
- 8:55to actually get rid of this scarcity money mindset?
- 8:59Well, I've got three practical steps for you to follow to do that. Step
- 9:03number one, the first step is to have what's called a fun
- 9:06account, an account that you put money in that you blow on
- 9:10purpose. That's right, the account is designed for you to put money in it
- 9:13just for the process of seemingly wasting it,
- 9:17all right? You want to buy the champagne and pop it, go for it. But this will
- 9:20prevent you having guilt and shame around spending money
- 9:23that you feel you don't have. That's the first step, having a fun account. The second step
- 9:28is to educate yourself about investing. Because
- 9:32no one is going to care about your money more than you. But the only thing holding
- 9:35you back from investing it and deploying it to grow it is the fact that
- 9:38you don't understand the investing landscape. And the only way
- 9:42around that is to put the knowledge in your head. So education must
- 9:45come before you deploy the money into investments. Wisdom
- 9:49before money. So someone once said to me, Lloyd, empty
- 9:53your wallet into your head so your head can fill your wallet. Step
- 9:57number three, delegate. You can't do
- 10:01it all yourself. You've got to delegate, which means starting to delegate
- 10:04some of the small tasks in your life that you think you're the only
- 10:07one that can do it. You think you're the best at it. But let me tell you,
- 10:10there are other people out there that can do it better than you. I know, it's crazy, but
- 10:14they are. And so when you go and start delegating, it
- 10:17means you can free up your time. And time is more valuable than money. So
- 10:21the trick to building wealth is scaling your time. You
- 10:24can work on higher value tasks. So the trick is to delegate the
- 10:27tasks that are below your hourly rate. And that allows you to free up
- 10:30your time and focus on wealth building instead of just being busy all the
- 10:33time. And the most important thing for you to firstly delegate if
- 10:36you haven't done it yet is to delegate the cleaning of your house.
- 10:40One of our students, she came in, she was very clever. She was an engineer running a
- 10:43team of 30 people, had four children, was building an app.
- 10:47as a business, and she was still cleaning her own house. And
- 10:51she said to me one day, Lloyd, I feel like I'm just, I've got no time left.
- 10:54I can't build my wealth. I can't spend time on my business. I said, you're
- 10:58still cleaning your own house. Of course you don't have any time.
- 11:01And it was that moment that she decided that, well, maybe
- 11:06there is someone better than me in this. Maybe I can actually trust someone enough to
- 11:09do a job better than me. And she outsourced her cleaning and
- 11:12that changed her whole life. And so that particular step will
- 11:16allow you to scale your wealth and not cling to the fact that you're the only one
- 11:19that can do it. So the scarcity money mindset is just one of
- 11:23six money mindsets that is holding you back from
- 11:26building wealth. You wanna know the other five? They're in my
