- 0:12Welcome to Sometimes There's Side Eye, a podcast about two
- 0:16friends having real and unfiltered conversations about
- 0:19dogs and people listen as we talk about our lives with dogs,
- 0:23training, behavior, share some laughs and a whole lot of
- 0:27banter. I'm Heather.
- 0:30And I'm Christy, what are we talking about this week,
- 0:33Heather? We are going to do our last
- 0:36episode before the holidays. We're taking a holiday break and
- 0:41this episode is going to be what are we thankful for?
- 0:45Obviously anything that is applicable to dogs.
- 0:51Well, and I guess anything related to like people, maybe
- 0:54we've met through dogs or whatever, just dog stuff.
- 0:58Dog stuff, yeah. What do you got Christy?
- 1:00And should have a list over there per usual.
- 1:04I am thankful that Jackson is goofy enough to to bring a lot
- 1:09of laughter into my life. He's a pretty serious guy
- 1:13compared to Lucy and so I really felt like he was going to be too
- 1:17serious for me. But he has this goofy crazy side
- 1:23and I do find myself laughing every single.
- 1:25Day. The little clowniness of a dog
- 1:29can like, really just brighten your day.
- 1:31Yeah. Yeah, I, I am definitely
- 1:34grateful for a little Mr. Bulldog's silliness, his antics.
- 1:40I think, you know, I feel like Jackson and Thiago are kind of
- 1:45similar in that way, like generally serious dogs, but they
- 1:48have such silly sides. Yes.
- 1:51Yeah, I wonder if other people would deter.
- 1:54Do you think of Thiago as a serious guy?
- 1:56Yeah, remember I. Don't know, I remember.
- 1:59A conversation. I said I think Rottweilers are
- 2:02too serious for me and others. Like what?
- 2:05He's such a goofball. What do you mean?
- 2:07And I was like, Oh no, I need goofball with a sight of
- 2:10serious, and he's serious with a sight of goofball.
- 2:13I do remember that now. And now you live with a serious,
- 2:16with a sight of goofball. Yeah, no.
- 2:19No wonder you love Bulldog so much.
- 2:21That all makes sense. Yeah, Bulldog is my spirit
- 2:26animal. He loves food.
- 2:27He loves being weird and goofy. Yeah, that is.
- 2:31True. I'm also thankful for the
- 2:32Bulldog. I mean, I I can accept that
- 2:36Bulldog has certainly grown, made himself a little corner in
- 2:40my heart and is there to stay. He's like a fungus, he's just
- 2:46growing. Yeah, it would seem that way.
- 2:50Aw, he's laying right here. Should I tell him he's a fungus,
- 2:53according to Christy? He's a fungi.
- 2:58Yeah, a fungi. Nice.
- 3:00Oh boy, it's it's getting ugly real quick here we.
- 3:04Haven't even been drinking. Yeah, right.
- 3:11I am grateful for thankful for us having this podcast because
- 3:20there are so many times where we work through problems on the
- 3:25air. And I think I, I do wonder
- 3:27sometimes do people think it's a shtick or whatever, but it's
- 3:30really not. There are truly so many times
- 3:33where I've had epiphanies while we were talking on an episode
- 3:37and I'm like, I feel like it's just like this safe space to air
- 3:41whatever's going on and figure things out.
- 3:43So I am grateful that that our friendship allows us to do that
- 3:50and the things that really come from that.
- 3:53And I would imagine that would still happen without the
- 3:56podcast, but I think it's really great and organic the way it
- 3:59sort of happens on the podcast too.
- 4:03Yeah, I like that I get to see your face when we work it out on
- 4:07the podcast. Yeah, totally.
- 4:09Because then we can make faces at each other and be like, Oh my
- 4:12gosh, I didn't even realize exactly what else you got on
- 4:19your little thankful list. I am thankful this year has been
- 4:23particularly hard. I call it the year of death 2025
- 4:27because both our friend Barbara from Barnhut and then my
- 4:31neighbor John who convinced me to get Jackson and keep him
- 4:35because he said don't worry, we'll be right by your side,
- 4:38we'll help you out along the way.
- 4:40Both of them have passed completely unexpectedly within
- 4:43three weeks of each other. And and I'm not thankful for
- 4:47that, but I am thankful that my tendency when I'm sad or
- 4:52depressed is to just lay in bed and just go catatonic as much as
- 4:58possible and eat my feelings and sleep my feelings and all those
- 5:02things. And I'm thankful that with
- 5:03Jackson, I was not able to do that, that he made me go out,
- 5:08get get out in the sunshine, get my feet in the dirt and the on
- 5:12the earth. You know, that we still needed
- 5:15to to get ourselves to class to, you know, because he still needs
- 5:20all the same exercise. Like he he's very great at
- 5:24snuggling when he knows I am sad or under the weather or
- 5:28whatever. But at the same time he needs to
- 5:31be run. He needs his mental stimulation.
- 5:34So he gave me a space where we could he could be snuggly and
- 5:39sweet, but also was like, now it's time to get up.
- 5:42Now we go do things. Yeah.
- 5:44So I was glad to have that in my life, thankful for a push
- 5:48forward when I needed it. Yeah, it was very losing Barb
- 5:53was. I mean, we've talked about how
- 5:55difficult it was, but also at her memorial service, seeing all
- 6:01of the people telling their stories and having her family
- 6:06say they, they got to experience Barb through all of us in a
- 6:11completely different way because they didn't, you know, they
- 6:14didn't know the dog side of her, which for all of us, all of us
- 6:18dog people was so hard to understand because that's the
- 6:20only Barb we knew, you know, But I do understand it.
- 6:25Dog sports is a very different world from like what anybody
- 6:29else knows, and either you're in it or you're not.
- 6:31And so it was really special to sit back and see everyone share
- 6:37all these stories about the impact that somebody had on our
- 6:42lives, and that impact only came because of dogs.
- 6:50Yeah, cheers to. Barb, I agree.
- 6:53Oh, makes me teary, I agree. Cheers to John too, because I
- 6:58don't know that you would have gotten over the threshold and
- 7:01adopted Jackson without his pressure.
- 7:05Yeah, yeah. And I think going along that
- 7:10theme of to honor John in a way his his partner Marie.
- 7:16So Marie still comes and gets Jackson and we still exchange
- 7:19dogs for play dates. And Jackson jumped in her car
- 7:24the other day and just, he's not normally like a face licker per
- 7:29SE, but man, he just, he jumped into the driver's seat before
- 7:34she could get the car started again and just buried her with
- 7:37kisses and was so excited over the top, excited to see her.
- 7:41And I thought, man, everyone deserves to be loved the way
- 7:45Jackson loves Marie. And then I love that docs teach
- 7:49us that. Yeah, I agree.
- 7:52I am thankful for the dogs that I have during.
- 7:59So I guess we didn't really talk about the fact that I had back
- 8:02surgery. So I had back surgery 2 weeks
- 8:04ago and I, I am not allowed to have a dog on a leash attached
- 8:10to me for 6 to 8 weeks. And if you know me, you can
- 8:14imagine how difficult that is. But I am thankful for my dogs
- 8:22and how they behave at my house and they're they have made my
- 8:27recovery pretty easier than I could have imagined.
- 8:31And of course, her usual Tiago's perfect, but honestly, Bulldog's
- 8:35been perfect too. And the, I would say trend's
- 8:38been perfect as well. She just like, needs more
- 8:41energy. Like, she's a little bored, I
- 8:42think. But you know, the boys are just
- 8:45like doing their thing, like, oh, OK, we're coming.
- 8:48We're laying down, we're hanging out.
- 8:50It doesn't matter how long that is.
- 8:53They don't care. And I'm actually kind of
- 8:56thankful for this time as well because I have been sleeping in
- 9:00our guest room because it's been better for my recovery every.
- 9:03And so Tiago's been sleeping with me every night.
- 9:07Isn't it nice to sleep with the dog?
- 9:09I mean, look. It is.
- 9:11I'm thankful my dog sleeps with me every night.
- 9:14I I will say this, if I lived alone and I owned Tiago, I would
- 9:22let Tiago sleep with me every night of his life because he is
- 9:26such a good sleeper. He doesn't crowd me, he doesn't
- 9:29make me hot. He doesn't wake me up.
- 9:31Bulldog. No way.
- 9:33Because he kicks you and he buries into you and it's
- 9:37Burrows. It's just it's not a good
- 9:39sleeping experience. He does those things for sure,
- 9:42yeah. He does also trend.
- 9:44Same trend's the worst. You would think she'd.
- 9:47Be the best because she's small, she's the worst she's.
- 9:50The worst. But no, I am thankful for how
- 9:56easy my dogs have been in my recovery.
- 9:59And I will just say, although the episodes about dogs, I would
- 10:04not have some of the friends that I have without dogs.
- 10:08And my friends throughout my recovery thus far have been
- 10:11incredible. And so I am very thankful for
- 10:15that as well. I am thankful for the people
- 10:19dogs bring into our lives. I've met.
- 10:21I mean, Lucy brought in all of you guys and, and then through
- 10:27the shelter work and volunteering and then Jackson's
- 10:31brought in a whole different slew of people who are also fun
- 10:36and just a such a variety of people that I wouldn't have met
- 10:40outside of dogs. Yeah, I'm so thankful for those
- 10:44connections and what the different personalities bring.
- 10:48They color your life in a different way.
- 10:51And I, I totally agree with you, those connections in that the
- 10:55community, there's nothing like it.
- 11:00I will say I am thankful. You know what actually I'm going
- 11:04to pivot. I have like different.
- 11:07I want to make sure I get it before I forget it.
- 11:10I was looking at old videos this week and I am thankful for for
- 11:15Bulldog. I know, and it's because I was
- 11:20telling Heather before we started today that he does not
- 11:24get credit for being the secondary friend a lot.
- 11:28So Lucy's number one guy in the whole world was Tiago.
- 11:32Jackson's favorite dog is Trenton, however, Bulldog is
- 11:39right there as a close second in an old video of him and Lucy
- 11:45running around the coffee table. And then him running himself
- 11:48into the coffee table surfaced this week and I just was dying
- 11:52laughing at it. And then then the memories of
- 11:57Jackson and Bulldog running around the backyard came up, and
- 12:00I thought, he is just the best secondary friend.
- 12:04Yeah, he tells him he's nobody's favorite necessarily, which
- 12:08sounds terrible, but it's not. He doesn't care.
- 12:11He's just a great friend to the other dogs.
- 12:14Both of my dogs have loved him so much.
- 12:17Yeah, he's just like a solid copilot to Tiago or Trenton,
- 12:21whoever. And I mean, let's face it, Tater
- 12:25doesn't need anyone else to love him as the number one because
- 12:29that is Jair's spot. That is my husband's spot.
- 12:32My husband loves that dog enough for the entire universe.
- 12:40So we're thankful we even get to be in the sphere.
- 12:43Oh. It is so true 'cause it's
- 12:45tater's world and we're living in it.
- 12:46Yes. No, that is like a really good
- 12:50point. Tater's personality is so
- 12:53special and funny and all of that stuff, but aside from that,
- 12:57like he is just a solid good guy, yeah.
- 13:00Yeah, yeah. Would you say he's a fun guy?
- 13:09I might what else you got over there on that list.
- 13:15Well, I was thinking about how recently Jackson sometimes likes
- 13:20to lay on my furniture that's not appropriate to lay on, like
- 13:24coffee tables or end tables. And I had to laugh because I
- 13:31thought, you know what? I'm an adult and it makes me
- 13:35laugh that my dog is on the coffee table.
- 13:38I know it's naughty, I know I should correct it.
- 13:41But guess what? It's my house and I get to make
- 13:44up the rules. And I know that sounds really
- 13:47odd but I think I needed him in my life to realize I can make up
- 13:52the my own rules. Like I don't have to always go
- 13:55with society says dogs shouldn't be on the coffee table.
- 13:59I it's my house, I can have dogs on the coffee table if I want.
- 14:04I think it's so so funny because prior to any of my friends
- 14:10owning a Stafford, I can't even ever imagine.
- 14:16In fact, I actually remember another friend showing me a
- 14:19picture where people were like laughing because this person
- 14:22Stafford was standing on their dining room table and I was
- 14:25literally what the hell is wrong with them?
- 14:29Like I, and this is going back probably 8 or 9 years and I was
- 14:34just incensed that someone was laughing at their dog being on a
- 14:39table. Now that in my mind I instantly
- 14:43imagine a Rottweiler standing on your dining room table, which
- 14:46feels a little more ridiculous, but I.
- 14:50Maybe even more funny. Than yeah, but I literally was
- 14:53like, Oh my God, I cannot believe anyone would ever laugh
- 14:56at that. And then move forward to pilot
- 15:00coming into our lives and us learning that Staffords are
- 15:04ridiculous and they literally stand on tables.
- 15:08This is like part of what they do.
- 15:10And owners laugh about it all the time.
- 15:13And we now have like 3 Staffords.
- 15:17Well 3.25 I'm going to say we have 3 Staffords in our life
- 15:22plus Jackson's .25 Stafford and all of said Stafford's would not
- 15:29even think twice and absolutely have stood on a freaking table.
- 15:34And so now at this point I'm just like oh like whatever.
- 15:38When I saw Jackson do it, I was like, well, of course he does,
- 15:40he's part Stafford when you. I was not expecting that.
- 15:45But I do like, I am grateful going back to what you're
- 15:50thankful for. I'm grateful that I have
- 15:53loosened up enough over the last 9-10 years to like look at that
- 15:58now and see the humor in it instead of being so stuffy about
- 16:02it and being like, Oh my God, there's a dog on the table.
- 16:05You know, it's so funny how that has changed by Pilot and
- 16:10everybody else being a part of my existence, just like Jackson
- 16:14being a part of yours. And I do.
- 16:16I see Jackson do that shit and I'm just like, well, that's the
- 16:19Stafford in him. Of course he's doing that.
- 16:22Why wouldn't he? Because do you remember when
- 16:26Bulldog was half on the table, he literally was staying at your
- 16:31house. His front feet were on the
- 16:32coffee table and his back feet were on the sofa.
- 16:34And you sent me that picture and I was like, Christy, what is
- 16:38wrong with you? Why would you let Bulldog do
- 16:41that? You were here.
- 16:42I took the picture and then called it to your attention.
- 16:45Oh, that's correct. And you were like, I was
- 16:48incensed. Unbelievable.
- 16:50We're like not having it. And I was like, this is the
- 16:52funniest thing I've ever seen. And you're like, get down.
- 16:55But then he was kind of stuck because he couldn't.
- 16:58Get. Back into the front and he
- 17:01couldn't back his front. He was stretched out a little
- 17:04too much and then you were annoyed you had to help him.
- 17:08Oh my. How the world changes, how our
- 17:13lives and our perspectives change.
- 17:15Yeah, yeah. That's.
- 17:18Hilarious. Now if he did it, would you
- 17:20think it was funny? I would probably laugh at him
- 17:23but still yell at him. This is my dog.
- 17:29So it's fine. Because it's my dogs.
- 17:32Like my dogs will stand on the table.
- 17:34Apparently I haven't become that enlightened.
- 17:37We'll keep working on you, yeah. We'll keep working on it.
- 17:40Oh, that's so funny. You know, I am really grateful
- 17:46for the evolution that continues to happen in dog training and I
- 17:52am grateful that and thankful for the amount of people that
- 17:57share their brilliance with the world.
- 18:01You know, I, I feel like, and, and we've said this to like
- 18:05social media, like there's so much negativity out there, but
- 18:08there are so many smart, smart people that are doing really
- 18:16smart things when it comes to training their dogs and other
- 18:19people's dogs and talking about how what our relationships look
- 18:24like, what they should look like, what they could look like.
- 18:27And I'm just like super thankful that all of those people use
- 18:33social media in such a positive way and that we come across that
- 18:38stuff often enough that maybe once a week, you and I will see
- 18:42something and send it to each other and say, this is so smart.
- 18:45Or did you read this? And because it makes that much
- 18:49of an impact on us, I, I guess I'm thankful for the access to
- 18:55all of that because it does make us better owners and it makes us
- 18:59better trainers. Yeah, absolutely.
- 19:05And I feel like our algorithm is very similar.
- 19:07Like sometimes people send me things and I think our algorithm
- 19:11is very different. Whenever you send me something,
- 19:17I'm like, oh, I saw that or oh, I was going to send that to.
- 19:19You Yeah, yeah. The thing I sent to Christy this
- 19:24week was somebody was showing a new way to to teach a dog to
- 19:29hold something in their mouth. And it was just such a smart and
- 19:35kind approach. And it is a direct 180 in
- 19:41comparison to the way that having that people used to teach
- 19:46this majority of people used to teach it.
- 19:49And I just like looked at that and I was like, this is so smart
- 19:52and it's thinking outside of the box.
- 19:54And gosh, we are so lucky that we have access to all of that
- 20:00kind of stuff. It makes me.
- 20:01It makes me better. Yeah, yeah.
- 20:04And I think that I'm, I'm really thankful on those same lines
- 20:09that that training is spilling into the everyday and into the
- 20:14sports world. So it's not just a concept, it's
- 20:18that we're seeing it in real life.
- 20:20And I am starting to see that with people that are competing
- 20:25with their dogs and, and to be honest, like it's much nicer to
- 20:30go to a dog show and like, have, I have someone celebrating with
- 20:34their dog then like screaming at their dog or you know, those
- 20:37types of things. I, I remember the first agility
- 20:40trial I went to and I walked away and I said, they're so
- 20:45unkind to their dogs. They're so mean.
- 20:49There were probably three people out of 50 that were kind to
- 20:52their dogs. And I said, I, I don't think I
- 20:55like this sport. Like this is not something for
- 20:58me, but I am seeing a shift where people are just being
- 21:02kinder. Yeah, that was my same
- 21:04experience. Going to check out an agility
- 21:07trainer so many years ago when we moved back here and I walked
- 21:11away and I was just like, yeah, this is not what I want my life
- 21:15with my dog to look like. And I know we're both saying
- 21:18agility, but it happens everywhere.
- 21:20And I. Not picking on agility, it just
- 21:25we're not, we're not. But I agree with you, I think
- 21:29that there is in a lot of different places a shift.
- 21:33And there are also people that I have known in the sports
- 21:38community to be what we will say an old school trainer, like old
- 21:44school trainer trainers were generally more heavy-handed.
- 21:48The the way of doing things was different.
- 21:52And I see, I see more move towards a better way, a kinder
- 21:58way, a gentler way even in some of those people.
- 22:02And that is really nice to see. And it makes me want to do more
- 22:08because I'm around than people who understand the approach that
- 22:13you and I take to things, right? Because it's easier for them to
- 22:17understand who we are and how we're going about teaching what
- 22:21we're what we're trying to teach.
- 22:24Yeah, I'm also thankful because it it makes me pause as a
- 22:29person, with a dog, as a owner, before I get to this level of
- 22:34frustration. Like should I stop this training
- 22:37session? Should I do these things?
- 22:39And even if I tip over into frustration, it still provides
- 22:44like a warning flag for me to be like, Hey, this is not how you
- 22:50usually act. So like, what's going on?
- 22:52And then where I can back, back, back myself back out of this
- 22:56frustration period or this, this place where I might be more more
- 23:01abrupt with my dog or angry or with my dog, those types of
- 23:05things. So I do, I'm so appreciative
- 23:07that the community as a whole is moving towards kindness.
- 23:10So it does put something on you to remind you and just that the
- 23:15the information that we can get is kinder too.
- 23:18So that honestly, what you listen to and what you ingest
- 23:23with your eyes, it makes a difference.
- 23:25And, and so if I'm watching Kinder videos, if I'm listening
- 23:29to Kinder podcasts, if I'm looking up Kinder trainers that
- 23:34and I'm soaking in that kindness that that comes out somewhere
- 23:39and, and it comes out towards my dog most of the time.
- 23:42And if it's not coming out towards my dog, then there's at
- 23:45least a warning signal in my brain that says that's not
- 23:49lining up with what you've been putting in your brain, that's
- 23:52not lining up with who you want to be.
- 23:54Yeah, it's like it. It makes you more aware that
- 23:58you've fallen outside of the guidelines that you have, that
- 24:02you're trying to maintain, You know, because no one's perfect.
- 24:05We all have bad days. We all we so over threshold just
- 24:09like our dogs and we get, you know, layer upon layer of thing,
- 24:15terrible things happening or frustrating things happening all
- 24:19of that, right. So, but it is easier.
- 24:23What was I saying to you earlier, you know, reinforcement
- 24:26history? Like it's easier to when you're
- 24:29seeing all that kindness in the world and around you and you're
- 24:33adjusting it, it's easier than, one, to recognize when you are
- 24:37over threshold and then two, to recognize how to bring yourself
- 24:41back down. Yeah.
- 24:43So yeah, I love that. I'm also going to say I'm
- 24:47thankful dogs teach us patients. I told Heather earlier.
- 24:52I wasn't thankful for it. I wasn't going to say it.
- 24:54I'm not thankful for it, but I am thankful that they teach us
- 24:59patience along the way. They sometimes they, they bring
- 25:03us down a peg and that's OK. Humility is good.
- 25:07Humility is my friend right now. Yeah.
- 25:10Always. Yeah.
- 25:13Well, yeah. And I think that they also teach
- 25:15us creativity, especially when we're someone who's actively
- 25:20training our dogs right to do particular tasks.
- 25:23You it It really does beg that you be creative if something's
- 25:29not working out, and that creativity makes you a better
- 25:34owner. Yeah, absolutely.
- 25:39Last and certainly not least, we are always thankful for our
- 25:44listeners. And I was thinking as I was
- 25:47saying this, I was like, you know, people are like thanks to
- 25:50my family and as if they're they're your only listeners.
- 25:53But we know that that's not the people that are listening to us
- 25:56because our family would never listen to this podcast.
- 26:02So. What that means for us is.
- 26:05To everyone who's not our family.
- 26:07Like we have a very committed little group of people who
- 26:14listen to us, and we are very thankful that you continue to
- 26:20stick with us and listen to us ramble on.
- 26:22And the reason that we do this is because it means something to
- 26:27someone out there. And we still do hear from people
- 26:31who say, hey, that episode really meant something to us.
- 26:34And so we're thankful for you and we appreciate listening
- 26:38because this is a Libra of love and we just do it because we
- 26:41enjoy it and we'll do it and as long as we do enjoy it.
- 26:45Yeah, yeah, yeah. I feel like your guys is
- 26:48whenever you guys chime in and say, hey, that meant something
- 26:52to us, that's always the time that we need it.
- 26:55Like, yeah, oh, OK, we are still making a positive impact.
- 26:59So thank you for engaging with us.
- 27:01And I feel like we for sure have the best listeners in the world.
- 27:06And yeah, and I know we say a lot that we're thankful for you,
- 27:09but it's because we're a lot thankful for you.
- 27:12Yes, I agree. We we need to give the thank,
- 27:16say we're thankful many times over throughout the year because
- 27:19it does mean a lot and without you there would be no show.
- 27:23Right, it'd just be Heather and I just talking to each other
- 27:27again. It'd be back to just Facebook
- 27:29messages back and forth. I know, I know this is way this.
- 27:33Is way better. So happy Thanksgiving to
- 27:37everybody who celebrates and enjoy your time with your
- 27:41family, with or without dogs 'cause sometimes no dogs, which
- 27:45feels really sad, but it happens and.
- 27:48Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and then we will
- 27:52see you guys all in the New Year.
