- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:31You can hear Rufus in there with his new crow going off.
- 0:35Anyway, today we are talking about the saying that is a dull
- 0:40knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife.
- 0:44Now, I've heard this thing 1000 times in the kitchen because my
- 0:48husband cooks and he constantly, you know, is working with knives
- 0:54and constantly making sure they're sharp and telling me
- 0:56they don't go in the dishwasher and things like that because a
- 0:59dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife.
- 1:03And we all, I think we all, you know, listen to these little
- 1:06phrases in our lives, but we don't ever, you know, actually
- 1:09dig in and say, OK, what does this mean?
- 1:12Well, in the case of a knife, it actually means that the dull
- 1:15knife can slip because it's not going through something like if
- 1:18you're cutting a tomato, it slips off of it and then it can
- 1:22get your fingers. So that makes it more dangerous.
- 1:26Now, when you think about this as a metaphor, it's actually
- 1:29brilliant because we think to ourselves, OK, well, I, I know
- 1:33enough, you know, in my head now I know enough of whatever enough
- 1:38might be coming from, whether it's the knowledge of what you
- 1:40do in life, whether it's, you know, about a certain subject,
- 1:45whatever it we, we believe, we have, you know, hit the
- 1:48crescendo and we don't have to go and know anymore.
- 1:51But the truth is, when you sharpen your skills, always not.
- 1:56There's another little phrase. We're surrounded by them as
- 1:58humans. But when we think about it, OK,
- 2:01sharpen your skills, you're actually getting yourself into a
- 2:05much better place as far as being able to do your job
- 2:09better. And it's safer.
- 2:11It's that back to that metaphor for the knife.
- 2:15You know, it's safer when you have a sharper knife.
- 2:17It's it's complete contrast to what you think it would be like.
- 2:21You know, a duller knife would be safer for me.
- 2:23I couldn't cut myself. But actually you could cut
- 2:25yourself quicker. And it's actually a date more
- 2:28dangerous cut because it's a blunter cut.
- 2:30Anyway, you get the point. And when you think about this in
- 2:35terms of being a human and you say, okay, I need to sharpen my
- 2:39skills. I need to be able to go out
- 2:41there and remember that if I'm dull, I'm more dangerous, okay,
- 2:46You start to think in terms of where does this show up and how
- 2:49do I fix it? And for me, it's always about
- 2:53learning more and more and more and more and more pouring in and
- 2:57just every day making sure that there's something small that I'm
- 3:00learning. Whether it's about the chickens,
- 3:03whether it's about neuro linguistic programming,
- 3:06cognitive behavioral therapy, painting, clay growing stuff, it
- 3:10doesn't matter. It's all about the learning
- 3:13process and it's all about cross pollinating skills.
- 3:17The problem we have in society though, is we get in this vein
- 3:21of it's, you know, we're A1 path.
- 3:23We should just be on one path and that one path is what we
- 3:28should stick to. And often that one path becomes
- 3:31boring. So we stop learning because
- 3:33we're just like, I don't know. But if you can cultivate this
- 3:36belief that the when you're dull, you're more dangerous and
- 3:41you start to think in terms of I've got to constantly be
- 3:43pouring in and learning whether it's about myself, whether it's
- 3:46about what I do, whether it's things that I can cross
- 3:50pollinate with, it doesn't matter.
- 3:52It makes me better. It makes me more excited, it
- 3:54gives me more oomph in my life. And that's what I'm talking
- 3:58about. It's like finding that oomph.
- 4:00So that's why it's so important to remember and when you set
- 4:04yourself up in a day, how you're going to, you know, set your day
- 4:08up so that every day you can learn a little something.
- 4:10It's so important. Now, at the beginning of the
- 4:12year, I had talked about an app called Headway.
- 4:15And Headway is just like Cliff Notes for adults and it gives
- 4:19you the ability to read books very quickly and then decide if
- 4:23you want to buy the book and read the whole book.
- 4:26For me, I think those, whether you use summary headway, there's
- 4:30a bunch of them out there. I've used a bunch of them and I
- 4:33can tell you it is such a great thing because when I pick one
- 4:38and I read it, often times I can say right away, this isn't going
- 4:41to take me past this little, you know, blip the summary, Cliff
- 4:45notes. But I would say out of every 12
- 4:49to 14 of them I read, I'm probably going to buy two books.
- 4:55It just to give you a kind of a ratio.
- 4:57And they always are able to add in different things for me.
- 5:01Like they they just give me different skill sets.
- 5:04So things that I wouldn't thought I ever wanted to read
- 5:06about, I end up reading about because the Cliff note pulled me
- 5:10in. The Cliff note made me think
- 5:11about it in a different way. And then sure enough, there's
- 5:14always a little tiny crumb that I can take with me into
- 5:17something else that I'm doing. So this is about pushing you and
- 5:21sharpening your skills today. So maybe even just go get a
- 5:25Headway out. And again, I don't get any paid
- 5:27any money from Headway. So this is not a promotion for
- 5:29Headway, but or summary or any of them grab one, start doing
- 5:34that because I'll tell you, it really does make a tremendous
- 5:37difference when you start adding that value in.
- 5:39OK, my friends, I hope you have a blessed day and I will see you
- 5:42tomorrow. Bye.
