- 0:00Hello, hello, welcome back everybody.
- 0:01Welcome back to the podcast. So glad to get you guys back in
- 0:08and just enjoying this beautiful strange weather.
- 0:14I'm not sure what's up with it, but usually at this time in the
- 0:17Midwest is, you know, covered in snow, which, you know, I think
- 0:22global warming has a lot to do with what's going on.
- 0:25So a little bit of housekeeping. If you didn't catch the last
- 0:28episode, make sure you guys check out the last episode
- 0:31because it was a really good one.
- 0:32I had talked about the four CT protocol protocols guide that I
- 0:38have just released a couple weeks ago and it has been a hit
- 0:45in the CT community. I know 24 hours that I released
- 0:49it, 10 people purchase the the guide.
- 0:53So let me kind of give you a rundown of what is included in
- 0:57this guide. So basically I have designed
- 1:00this guide for new CT technologists and even brand new
- 1:03travelers. Like if you're new to traveling,
- 1:05this will help you at whatever site you're at.
- 1:08So disclaimer, this is not to replace your site's protocol
- 1:11book or anything of that sort. This is merely a reference to
- 1:15use along with your training and it does not replace any site
- 1:20specific protocols or radiologist recommended
- 1:24protocols or recommendations. OK.
- 1:26This is merely a reference and it is stated that in the sky.
- 1:30So what I did was as I got my little brain together and all
- 1:34the notes that I have written down, all the clinical
- 1:36experience that I have and just all the protocols I've used
- 1:39throughout the years and combined it into the sky.
- 1:42So I give you 10 of the most common CT exams and protocols
- 1:47that we execute every single day and put it together in this
- 1:50guide. I've also got a few pages in the
- 1:53beginning as far as patient centering tips, contrast what
- 1:57happens if something goes wrong. So all that is entailed into
- 2:00this guide. So if you want a little short
- 2:03video of it, make sure you check out TikTok.
- 2:05I'll link that video in the show notes so you guys can check that
- 2:09out. OK, so you can get this guide in
- 2:12two different versions. So there's a the digital version
- 2:16and then there's a physical version.
- 2:17Both of them do include two courses. 1 is a common CT exams
- 2:23and protocols. The second one is a contrast
- 2:26media of course. Then you will also get a bonus
- 2:2910 episode audio series, the CG tech cheat code along with your
- 2:34purchase of the guide. So digital version is 4499 and
- 2:40the physical version of it including all that stuff is
- 2:435499. So if you're interested in that
- 2:46link in the show notes, go check it out.
- 2:48Go get yours today. Also make sure you follow on
- 2:51TikTok. I go ahead and breakdown more
- 2:53protocols YouTube channel. There is a lot more educational
- 2:57videos going up where I will be dissecting protocols one by one
- 3:02and also doing some CT registry review educational material as
- 3:07well because that has been highly requested.
- 3:09So make sure you check all that out.
- 3:12Everything is in the show notes so you can go subscribe and
- 3:15follow on TikTok. So in today's episode, I am
- 3:19going to be talking about why the term that is used and I hear
- 3:24this all the time. You will learn what time is bad
- 3:28CT advice. Now, I have heard this probably
- 3:31more than once in my entire career where I've heard other
- 3:35technologists say in time you'll just learn it.
- 3:38And I'm going to explain to you why this is bad advice, and I
- 3:42don't think this is advice that you should listen to.
- 3:44So the reason I feel that this is bad advice is because I am
- 3:48calling out all the lazy teaching masks as encouragement
- 3:54and training. Listen, I know that's going to
- 3:56trigger the fuck out of some of you, but hear me out.
- 3:59Stay with me and listen, OK? You and I both know that there
- 4:04are technologists out there that exist in many facilities that
- 4:09just don't know how to train people properly.
- 4:13I can tell you that one of the techs that I work with know
- 4:19somebody that is like this. OK, So I am calling out all the
- 4:24lazy teaching because when you are teaching new technologists
- 4:30lazy ways of how to do things in cookie cutter training and
- 4:36button pushing techniques, you mask this as encouragement,
- 4:39which it doesn't encourage. They don't learn anything out of
- 4:42that, OK. And especially when you just say
- 4:46push this button, push that button, and the technologists
- 4:49ask you why we're executing that the way we do or why we're
- 4:53pushing that contrast as quickly as we are.
- 4:56What kind of anatomy are we looking at?
- 4:59And your response is what? I don't know.
- 5:02We're just the tech. We're not the radiologist.
- 5:04I hate that fucking answer every single time because I miss the
- 5:07days where radiologists, you can walk into the reading room and
- 5:10they would actually teach you something because now a lot of
- 5:13them read remotely and they just don't want to have the time or
- 5:16don't want to bother when it comes to that, which that's an
- 5:19entirely different different episode.
- 5:21So the problem that I see is that time doesn't fix confusion
- 5:27without structured training. OK with time isn't going to fix.
- 5:32Oh well. I'm confused about APE study on
- 5:34why it didn't turn out or I'm confused on why we need a
- 5:38certain access the way we do. I'm confused on why we have to
- 5:43wait 65 seconds for an abdomen and pelvis with contrast CT.
- 5:48OK, when you have a system setup or a department setup where your
- 5:52training is structured, your texts are knowledgeable, they
- 5:55can go ahead and get those people trained in 8 to 12 weeks
- 5:59time to go ahead and operate on their own.
- 6:02Time doesn't fix that. OK.
- 6:05It's making sure that you do a lot of repetition and making
- 6:09sure that you do things right the first way.
- 6:13Making sure you practice those exams, making sure you ask the
- 6:16right questions. OK, so I'm sorry, but time isn't
- 6:21going to fix how confused you are.
- 6:23Or you'll just learn with time. It's all bullshit.
- 6:26You have to have a structured training program or a structured
- 6:30training like checklist or something in your facility to
- 6:34make sure that those new technologists that are
- 6:36transitioning know exactly what they're doing.
- 6:38OK, here's the other thing. You're waiting to feel
- 6:41confident. That's a big one.
- 6:43The only way that you're going to feel confident is by
- 6:46practicing and repping petition. It's not about ego.
- 6:50It's not about this or thinking that you know everything.
- 6:53It is about making sure that you have practice under your belt
- 6:58and repetition of those exams and those exams are going to
- 7:02feel very boring and convoluted. However, when you practice and
- 7:06you have repetition over and over and over and over again,
- 7:09you're going to be a better technologist and you're going to
- 7:12excel. Now here's another one that I
- 7:14come across. Fear of making mistakes.
- 7:17Listen, you have to remember we're all human.
- 7:19Humans make mistakes, OK? And as long as, you know,
- 7:23acknowledge your mistake and you're accountable and what can
- 7:26I do to not repeat this mistake? That is what's going to make all
- 7:30the difference. I gotta tell you how many times
- 7:32I've called a radiologist and said, you know what?
- 7:34I screwed up. I didn't do the without on the
- 7:36CTA head, which we know at our facility because this is our
- 7:40protocol that we have to do it without before we do the with
- 7:43contrast. And I admit and I just say, hey,
- 7:47do you want me to bring patient back?
- 7:48Like after an hour, 2 hours, you know, and sometimes 9 times out
- 7:52of 10, they're like, you know what?
- 7:54I don't really think I need it. So no.
- 7:55So acknowledging your mistake, you know, taking accountability
- 8:00for your mistake and making sure that you understand what you
- 8:03need to do next time to not repeat the mistake is super
- 8:06duper important. OK, now comparing yourself to
- 8:11more experienced texts. You cannot compare yourself to
- 8:15other experienced texts because I work in a department where
- 8:19there's like roughly around 30 technologists, okay?
- 8:24I mean, we are a very large department with five CT
- 8:26scanners. The thing is, is that all of our
- 8:29experience come from different places.
- 8:32We were all taught differently. But The thing is, is when we
- 8:35execute exams, it's the same result, OK?
- 8:38So you cannot compare yourself to, you know, Susan, who can
- 8:43whoop out APE study in seconds versus Sally who has to take
- 8:48like an extra 5 to 10 minutes to get it right.
- 8:51You can't compare yourself because everybody's learning
- 8:53curve is different. Everybody's speed is different.
- 8:56So you can't go at the speed of a tech who's been scanning for
- 8:5930 years versus a tech who's been scanning for two.
- 9:02You have to stop comparing yourself.
- 9:04You have to shape yourself into your own, you know, person, into
- 9:08your own type of technologists that you want to be.
- 9:12You can't compare yourself to others, OK, Because they've had
- 9:15other training, they do things maybe a little bit differently.
- 9:18So you cannot compare yourself to other technologists, OK?
- 9:22Comparison is not a good thing. And I've seen that so many times
- 9:26in different facilities that I've worked out that they're
- 9:28trying to compare themselves to other technologists when a lot
- 9:32of times, you know, they don't have the same knowledge or the
- 9:36training that you're trying to compare yourself to.
- 9:39You have to educate yourself in a way that you understand, that
- 9:44you are able to grasp and that you go at your own speed and you
- 9:48develop your own experience. You cannot compare yourself to
- 9:52other people. It's just it's not going to
- 9:54work. OK.
- 9:55So what I see is that there's a lot of time wasted, OK, new
- 10:01technologists feel very behind when the right framework, the
- 10:05right structure, training the right things could have been
- 10:08implemented from the beginning or even sooner.
- 10:11A big take away is, is that in CTI feel there is a huge
- 10:15disservice because the way we learn CT is not like it is when
- 10:21you go to X-ray school. X-ray school is structured.
- 10:23You have clinicals, you have a clinical instructor, you have
- 10:26disc. What I see a lot of programs is
- 10:28this, you don't really have a clinical instructor that is
- 10:31there on the site all the time while you're doing it.
- 10:34It's like, OK, you go to the clinical site and they rely on
- 10:38the technologists that are there to train you.
- 10:41And I think that's where there is a big disservice because if
- 10:44that hospital isn't set up correctly to making sure that
- 10:48they're executing your training in the right way, it could be a
- 10:51huge disservice to you. OK.
- 10:53So my take away in this video is that when you have structure,
- 10:57when you have a proper training process, even a checklist, when
- 11:03you have those things in order, it does shorten the learning
- 11:07curve that you're able to execute those exams like you're
- 11:11supposed to and you're able to learn and grasp the concept a
- 11:15little bit easier. Sometimes people grasp it a lot
- 11:18faster, sometimes people need a little bit more time, but at
- 11:22least it makes the learning curve easier and for you to
- 11:25grasp the concept of CTE with all its complexities in a much
- 11:30easier your way. So that is what I have for you.
- 11:33As far as today's episode, hopefully that was a little bit
- 11:36insightful. So if you want a copy of the
- 11:40core CT protocols guide, make sure you check out the show
- 11:43notes. So there's two versions of it, a
- 11:45physical and a digital version and go get your guide today.
- 11:50Also follow on TikTok where I, you know, talk about all the CT
- 11:53things and subscribe to the YouTube channel.
- 11:56Make sure you subscribe to this podcast so that you can get the
- 12:00latest episodes when I go ahead and release them.
