- 0:09Speaker 1: You're listening to a podcast from News Talks be follow
- 0:12Speaker 1: this and our Wide Ranger podcasts now on iHeartRadio.
- 0:16Speaker 2: It is official. Costco is bringing its second New Zealand store.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Site's going to be in the new Drurytown Center development,
- 0:23Speaker 2: which is about thirty k's south of Auckland. Sue Chetwin
- 0:25Speaker 2: is the chair of the Grocery Action Group and with
- 0:27Speaker 2: us Hey, Sue high. Should we expect it to do
- 0:31Speaker 2: the same thing it's done in West Auckland and drive
- 0:32Speaker 2: down prices and the other supermarkets in the area.
- 0:36Speaker 3: Look, I imagine that that will happen, and that will
- 0:39Speaker 3: be great for shoppers who choose to shop in Drury
- 0:45Speaker 3: in South Auckland, But I don't think it's going to
- 0:48Speaker 3: be a game changer for supermarket shopping generally. I mean
- 0:53Speaker 3: Costco is a very sort of specific way of shopping.
- 0:57Speaker 3: You become a member. They don't have lots of supermarkets,
- 1:02Speaker 3: but they do offer really large discount so good on them.
- 1:05Speaker 3: I suppose one of the things that you could take
- 1:07Speaker 3: from this is that Costco is very large operator. You know,
- 1:11Speaker 3: they're there to make profits. They think that they can
- 1:13Speaker 3: be made in New Zealand, so.
- 1:15Speaker 4: It would be really good if a third or fourth
- 1:19Speaker 4: operator thought like that, but was willing to have a
- 1:22Speaker 4: few more super makeers so more people could benefit.
- 1:25Speaker 2: The difference between this Costco and the Costco that they've
- 1:27Speaker 2: got west of Auckland is that this one's going to
- 1:29Speaker 2: be able to sell booze because of course they've got
- 1:31Speaker 2: the weird thing happening in West Auckland. How much cheaper
- 1:33Speaker 2: is their booze offering? Do you know?
- 1:36Speaker 3: Look not, I don't know, but I imagine you know,
- 1:40Speaker 3: that's a very important part of you know, the geopolies sales,
- 1:45Speaker 3: you know, food stuffs and Woolworths. So it will be
- 1:49Speaker 3: significant I imagine for Costco.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Do you think that other supermarkets are pleased about this
- 1:54Speaker 2: or not terribly?
- 1:57Speaker 3: Look, I imagine you know that it's the sort of
- 2:01Speaker 3: competition that they might want to have because it is
- 2:04Speaker 3: only one another, one new store. You know, I say
- 2:10Speaker 3: it's not you know, it's not a competitor coming in
- 2:13Speaker 3: and saying they're going to open in every town and
- 2:15Speaker 3: city in the country. I mean, you know, they're grade operators,
- 2:18Speaker 3: but they're not the one that's going to shift the dial.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Okay, hey, Sue, it's very good to talk to you.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Thank you very much, appreciate your time. That Sue Chetwin,
- 2:25Speaker 2: Grocery Action Group Chair.
