- 0:11Speaker 1: the inside out. Welcome back to the Observatory Podcast. Today,
- 0:20Speaker 1: Ray and I are going to sit down on Zoom
- 0:24Speaker 1: with her nephews, our nephews, Nate and Zaid, and they
- 0:30Speaker 1: moved to Kentucky about eighteen months ago, and while they've
- 0:34Speaker 1: been there, they've been remodeling this beautiful mansion that's there,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and we're going to go into the process of them
- 0:43Speaker 1: doing that and how it's really they've made this dream
- 0:47Speaker 1: come true with this mansion, and it's really a fascinating story.
- 0:53Speaker 1: We're going to share some of the hard parts, the
- 0:57Speaker 1: easy parts, the good parts. So just sit back, relax,
- 1:01Speaker 1: and enjoy this conversation with Nate and Zaid. Welcome back
- 1:06Speaker 1: to the Observatory Podcast. Today, we're on Zoom. Yes, I
- 1:10Speaker 1: haven't done a zoom in a bit.
- 1:11Speaker 2: I know we're forgetting the technology, but we've got it working.
- 1:16Speaker 1: We've got our technological wizards.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And we're delighted to have my nephews join us today,
- 1:24Speaker 2: So Nate and Zie Plumber and Nate of course is
- 1:28Speaker 2: our extremely talented producer of the podcast. So he's been
- 1:34Speaker 2: the magic behind all of the three years that we've
- 1:37Speaker 2: been doing this.
- 1:38Speaker 1: All the behind the scenes stuff that we're not capable of.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Him, he's the one that makes us look so good.
- 1:44Speaker 1: He definitely does.
- 1:45Speaker 3: I'm the one that knows all that good, juicy stuff
- 1:48Speaker 3: that gets to eat it out.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Oh that's awesome. We'll have to have a blooper reel sometime. Yeah,
- 1:57Speaker 2: we should have a blooper reel. That would be fun.
- 2:00Speaker 2: But we've been so excited to have this conversation because
- 2:04Speaker 2: Natan's I have recently well, I guess it's not recently.
- 2:08Speaker 2: It's been almost a year, right, has it.
- 2:11Speaker 3: Been in next month? It's been eighteen months. Wow, it's
- 2:15Speaker 3: almost a year and a half. Yeah.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So they moved eighteen months ago to Kentucky and they
- 2:23Speaker 2: have been renovating an extremely beautiful mansion and so I've
- 2:30Speaker 2: and this is not their first rodeo when it comes
- 2:32Speaker 2: to renovations, so they know what they're doing. And I've
- 2:36Speaker 2: just been really eager to have this deep conversation about
- 2:40Speaker 2: chasing dreams and why you love renovating old spaces and
- 2:46Speaker 2: how the two of you find such energy. I watch
- 2:48Speaker 2: your videos and I think I'd be sitting in a
- 2:51Speaker 2: puddle on the middle of the stairs crying instead of
- 2:54Speaker 2: working hard taking down all that wallpaper and everything when
- 2:57Speaker 2: I watch you, guys, so I'm eager to hear or just.
- 3:03Speaker 1: It's not always roses when you're doing that kind of work,
- 3:06Speaker 1: that's for sure.
- 3:08Speaker 3: So that's melted in the puddle and sides chasing me
- 3:12Speaker 3: around with a high absorbent sponge.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Well, the two of you make for a perfect pair
- 3:20Speaker 2: when it comes to, you know, chasing dreams. So let's
- 3:24Speaker 2: start there. Tell us how the dream of Kentucky came
- 3:28Speaker 2: to be? And you know why. You know, here's a
- 3:32Speaker 2: place that you didn't know you hadn't. I mean, Nate,
- 3:35Speaker 2: I know you lived in Kentucky before, but this part
- 3:38Speaker 2: of Kentucky you didn't know. I don't think you did.
- 3:40Speaker 2: But how do you how do you make that decision
- 3:43Speaker 2: to just, you know, pick up a place that you
- 3:45Speaker 2: already loved and when you were living here, you guys
- 3:49Speaker 2: renovated another old house and actually created a very magical
- 3:53Speaker 2: carriage house out of a dilapidated garage that became a
- 4:00Speaker 2: top sort of destination place for people when they wanted
- 4:05Speaker 2: something a really cool vibe to come stay in. So
- 4:09Speaker 2: tell us a little bit about how you choose to
- 4:12Speaker 2: leave someplace you love and go on and a venture.
- 4:16Speaker 3: I think ever since before we were married, we both
- 4:20Speaker 3: always had this dream, and I don't want to say
- 4:23Speaker 3: a dream, because we knew we were going to do this.
- 4:26Speaker 3: We didn't know if it would be twenty years or
- 4:30Speaker 3: you know, a couple of years. We called it our
- 4:33Speaker 3: hacienda dream in Spanish. Hacienda's in a state, so it's
- 4:37Speaker 3: more than just a house, like a big place for
- 4:39Speaker 3: people to gather. And there's like the cute little movie
- 4:42Speaker 3: in Canto that it's generations of family all living in
- 4:46Speaker 3: this big estate. Essentially long before we got married, our
- 4:52Speaker 3: love for old grandeur kind of houses. Long before our wedding.
- 4:57Speaker 3: We got married in the grandest mansion in Utah.
- 5:01Speaker 2: That's right.
- 5:03Speaker 3: When we were early dating. He was showing me pictures
- 5:06Speaker 3: on his phone and I saw this cute little old
- 5:08Speaker 3: church up in bear Lake. I'm like, why do you
- 5:12Speaker 3: have a picture of this? And he goes, oh, my gosh,
- 5:14Speaker 3: I would love to buy it and renovate it and
- 5:17Speaker 3: restore it. And I laughed. I'm like, well, I've tried
- 5:21Speaker 3: to find the owners. I've looked everywhere to find out,
- 5:24Speaker 3: you know, who owns that I wanted to and hear
- 5:28Speaker 3: this guy from Honduras finds this little cute church that was,
- 5:32Speaker 3: you know, two and a half hours north of where
- 5:34Speaker 3: he lived, right outside your hometown.
- 5:38Speaker 2: Right right right, exactly the one in Yeah, it's the
- 5:41Speaker 2: one there on the corner.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Yeah. They had a letter to them asking them, you know,
- 5:49Speaker 3: could we we love this, We'd love to, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 3: restore it. And we never heard back, but we've always
- 5:55Speaker 3: had that on the back burner. And me as a kid,
- 5:57Speaker 3: I always I always loved the skin airy, haunted mansions.
- 6:01Speaker 3: I was obsessed with castles. I know what mansard roofs
- 6:06Speaker 3: were in Colford ceilings Wayn's cotting mule posts. I knew
- 6:10Speaker 3: all this obnoxious architecture stuff. Is like a wee child,
- 6:15Speaker 3: it was my dream. But Zaide's too, living in a
- 6:18Speaker 3: different country. His grandparents raised him. He grew up in
- 6:23Speaker 3: like the big home that everybody would come home to,
- 6:26Speaker 3: and he has all those happy memories. So we always
- 6:29Speaker 3: kind of knew we were gonna do it. I was
- 6:33Speaker 3: let go from a job. It was a little startup,
- 6:36Speaker 3: wasn't managed well, and they.
- 6:38Speaker 2: A startup that had those startup challenges.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I mean, I understood they let me go. They couldn't
- 6:44Speaker 3: afford me, like things weren't ran well enough to stay
- 6:47Speaker 3: on the same track they had been on. At that point,
- 6:51Speaker 3: we had just had a big wedding that we were
- 6:53Speaker 3: still trying to pay off. Zaid had quit his big
- 6:57Speaker 3: money job to take another job so he could go
- 6:59Speaker 3: back back to school, and I was the bread winner,
- 7:02Speaker 3: and so we kind of had to figure something out.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Zaid had a construction background, and I've remodeled every house
- 7:11Speaker 3: I've ever owned, and I was in the garage one
- 7:15Speaker 3: day and moving boxes in there with the black widows
- 7:17Speaker 3: and the cobwebs, and I'm like, this would make an
- 7:20Speaker 3: awesome like guesthouse or carriage house. And one thing about
- 7:25Speaker 3: me and Zeid is neither one of us pumps the brakes.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Like I told Zeid, let's turn this into a guest
- 7:31Speaker 3: house a carriage house. He's like sure, Like I'm like,
- 7:34Speaker 3: you don't want to like fight about it or anything.
- 7:37Speaker 3: And so we did. But we still had, you know,
- 7:43Speaker 3: we're working on this project but still have the hacienda
- 7:46Speaker 3: dream in the background. And we learned a lot. It
- 7:50Speaker 3: was our first year of marriage, and the two hardest
- 7:52Speaker 3: things you can go through is losing a job, money
- 7:55Speaker 3: issues which go along with that, and building a home together.
- 7:59Speaker 3: So we did like all the big divorce things our
- 8:01Speaker 3: first year. Got them out of the way. Ooh yeah,
- 8:07Speaker 3: we learned a lot because a lot of that. Like
- 8:10Speaker 3: I had a square box that I sat on the computer,
- 8:14Speaker 3: I did the layout. I'm like, well, the bathroom's here,
- 8:16Speaker 3: you know, the bedroom here, the living room, kitchen. I
- 8:19Speaker 3: did all of that and like me and Zid just
- 8:22Speaker 3: figured it all out as we went. We knew we
- 8:26Speaker 3: were a good team, but I'm like, we can do
- 8:28Speaker 3: stuff like this and not kill each other. Like I remodeling,
- 8:32Speaker 3: like you guys know, is hard and there's a lot
- 8:35Speaker 3: of balls in the air, and sometimes you want to
- 8:37Speaker 3: be that puddle. Right. We survived it, and then we
- 8:42Speaker 3: put it up on Airbnb and it became instantly one
- 8:46Speaker 3: of the most sought after airbnbs. We were charging more
- 8:50Speaker 3: than any other competition for a smaller place, and we
- 8:55Speaker 3: were constantly booked and so we're like, well, you know,
- 8:58Speaker 3: this is going well. So we decided to renovate the
- 9:01Speaker 3: basement of our historic bountiful house and we built a
- 9:06Speaker 3: secret passage with a speakeasy behind it, and then we
- 9:11Speaker 3: listed that and it was doing well, and then we're like, well,
- 9:14Speaker 3: maybe we'll put the upstairs on for a lot higher money,
- 9:19Speaker 3: but if someone's willing to rent it, we'll go over
- 9:21Speaker 3: stay at mom and Dad's. And it did well, so
- 9:25Speaker 3: we started living with Mom and Dad, not meaning to,
- 9:28Speaker 3: but we are making this money, and the dream of
- 9:32Speaker 3: hacienda came into place sooner than we thought.
- 9:36Speaker 4: I believe in him all the time.
- 9:38Speaker 3: Yeah, which is dangerous.
- 9:43Speaker 4: It's not dangerous because when we had a conversation about
- 9:49Speaker 4: remot or by the house and does make Yeah, that's
- 9:55Speaker 4: just true. We can do it right because he has
- 9:59Speaker 4: a lot of ideas and we talked together and yeah,
- 10:04Speaker 4: let's do it. And it's hard. Sometimes we have really
- 10:09Speaker 4: harp days, but works.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Yeah, there are a lot of hard and I do
- 10:15Speaker 3: have ideas, but Zaid has the I'll make this happen
- 10:19Speaker 3: sort of thing. I'm like, well, let me watch these youtubes,
- 10:22Speaker 3: let me research, let me make a plan, let me
- 10:24Speaker 3: I've made this whole list of items. Meanwhile, Zaide's out there.
- 10:28Speaker 3: You can hear saws and hammers and nail guns. And
- 10:31Speaker 3: then he's like, I did, It's.
- 10:33Speaker 2: The construction is done.
- 10:37Speaker 3: So we decided, you know, okay, let's start looking. Me
- 10:41Speaker 3: and Zaid collected historic homes on Zillow like they were
- 10:45Speaker 3: Pokemon cards. We're like, oh, did you see this one? Oh,
- 10:48Speaker 3: look at this one. We love this one's stained glass,
- 10:50Speaker 3: we love this one has those high ceilings. One of
- 10:53Speaker 3: Zaide's biggest things were high ceilings. Yes, and we caught them.
- 10:59Speaker 3: But we'd find all these different things, and I remember
- 11:02Speaker 3: there was one in North Carolina that we loved and
- 11:05Speaker 3: I called the realtor and I told my parents and
- 11:07Speaker 3: they were like, you called the realtor on a house,
- 11:10Speaker 3: you know, this huge mansion project. And I'm like yeah,
- 11:14Speaker 3: Like I had all these questions for him, and we
- 11:16Speaker 3: were looking at pictures online and it became very real.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Even in the beginning stages, I just thought, well, it
- 11:23Speaker 3: was just a phone call. And then then later he
- 11:26Speaker 3: gave me the number of the owner and I was
- 11:29Speaker 3: texting asking him some questions and like these you know,
- 11:32Speaker 3: these far off houses in another part of the United
- 11:35Speaker 3: States that are way over our head. Like I'm talking
- 11:39Speaker 3: about him. The balls rolling the house was so big
- 11:42Speaker 3: that the house was the property and there was no
- 11:44Speaker 3: other land with it, so we decided against it. But
- 11:48Speaker 3: we just kept looking at houses and we found this
- 11:51Speaker 3: house and I told said, I'm like, well, you know,
- 11:55Speaker 3: I have some We didn't have money, but we had
- 11:58Speaker 3: some well, I mean, we had started to get money
- 12:02Speaker 3: again from the rental income. And I'm like, I have
- 12:05Speaker 3: some flight credits. Let's just fly to Kentucky because Zeid
- 12:08Speaker 3: had never been to Kentucky. But funny enough, when Zeid
- 12:12Speaker 3: first came to United States, he came to Tennessee, and
- 12:16Speaker 3: so Tennessee and Kentucky are like twin sisters. And he
- 12:21Speaker 3: lived in Severeville, which that's where Dollywood is. Oh wow,
- 12:26Speaker 3: so yeah, he had lived there for it was it
- 12:29Speaker 3: nine months, yes, and so, and we weren't looking in
- 12:34Speaker 3: any particular state. I had set Zillo to pre nineteen
- 12:38Speaker 3: hundred over forty five hundred square feet the house on
- 12:43Speaker 3: at least an acre. I had kind of the search
- 12:46Speaker 3: that I was going through, and we looked at houses,
- 12:49Speaker 3: and well online a lot of them were in the South.
- 12:52Speaker 3: Because the houses we were drawn to were the Antebellums
- 12:56Speaker 3: or the Greek revivals or this house a second Empire
- 13:02Speaker 3: and we saw this house and I called the realtor.
- 13:07Speaker 3: We were going to the gym. We're in the gym
- 13:09Speaker 3: parking lot. And the realtor answered and it had been
- 13:13Speaker 3: featured on all these old old home websites and like
- 13:17Speaker 3: all over the place, and it had been for sale
- 13:19Speaker 3: for a year and a half. And I called the realtor.
- 13:23Speaker 3: He's now become our friend, Larry, but at the time
- 13:25Speaker 3: he was like, yeah, it's if you guys come, I
- 13:27Speaker 3: can have someone in the office show it to you.
- 13:29Speaker 3: After I got off the phone with site, I'm like,
- 13:31Speaker 3: I don't think he thinks were coming. And then second
- 13:34Speaker 3: of all, I'm sure that so many people have wanted
- 13:37Speaker 3: to just see the house that like he's showing it
- 13:40Speaker 3: a thousand more times than like he has actual interested
- 13:44Speaker 3: buyers with the financing. And a few weeks after that
- 13:49Speaker 3: we booked. I'm like, let's just go. We'll use these
- 13:51Speaker 3: flight credits. There was two other mansions that we had liked.
- 13:55Speaker 3: They were one was two hours one way and the
- 13:58Speaker 3: other one was two hours the other way. So we
- 14:00Speaker 3: reached out to those realtors and we flew out to
- 14:04Speaker 3: see them, and we're looking for a hotel This is
- 14:07Speaker 3: a tiny little town in central Kentucky. It's fifty minutes
- 14:12Speaker 3: south of where my parents used to live, so it's
- 14:14Speaker 3: fairly close, like close enough that I know some things.
- 14:17Speaker 3: But we were having a hard time finding hotels, so
- 14:21Speaker 3: we looked on Airbnb and the house was on Airbnb.
- 14:25Speaker 3: So I'm like, oh, my hell if we go stay
- 14:28Speaker 3: the house that we're flying out to see Maya. And
- 14:33Speaker 3: so I reached out to the lady and now they
- 14:36Speaker 3: she's well the previous owner who's also become our friends,
- 14:40Speaker 3: Robbie and Missy Bickett, and I reached out to Missy
- 14:43Speaker 3: and I'm like, oh, we're so excited to see your house.
- 14:45Speaker 3: And we had already planned with the realtor. And then
- 14:48Speaker 3: we called the realtor back Lay and we're like, we're coming.
- 14:51Speaker 3: He's like, oh, like, you know, I don't. He didn't
- 14:53Speaker 3: think we were good to And he's like, okay, yeah, well,
- 14:56Speaker 3: i'd love to show you the house. So we're like
- 14:58Speaker 3: he probably just has so many cookie lose and so
- 15:02Speaker 3: we're like, Okay, we're gonna stay in the house. We're
- 15:04Speaker 3: there for the full weekend. We'll look at these other
- 15:06Speaker 3: two houses. But we knew and right before Larry called
- 15:12Speaker 3: me laughing really hard, and he goes, you've upset the
- 15:16Speaker 3: flow here. He's like, Missy called panicked that she had
- 15:19Speaker 3: an Airbnb guest, and we were actually the first and
- 15:23Speaker 3: only guests Surrand, the first and the last. Missy called
- 15:30Speaker 3: panicking that she had guests that just happened to be
- 15:34Speaker 3: during your showings. So we've been trying to talk like
- 15:37Speaker 3: maybe they'll treat you guys to dinner to get you
- 15:40Speaker 3: out of the house so these other people can come
- 15:42Speaker 3: see the house. And they were trying to figure out
- 15:45Speaker 3: like all the logistics, and.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Then realized you were the same ones, right, yeah.
- 15:50Speaker 3: I think she said, well he and his husband, and
- 15:53Speaker 3: then Larry said the same, well well he and he's like, okay,
- 15:56Speaker 3: it's it's the same people. So he called laughing, but
- 15:59Speaker 3: he won'ted to tell me the story. We flew into
- 16:02Speaker 3: Lexington Airport when my family for years had lived and
- 16:06Speaker 3: done the horse business, and so I was baptized in
- 16:10Speaker 3: the Bluegrass. But we were gonna like dink around Lexington
- 16:16Speaker 3: and Versales and but so if anyone's listening. For the
- 16:19Speaker 3: first two years we lived there, we called it Versailles
- 16:22Speaker 3: like France, but in Kentucky. They don't save Versailles. They
- 16:25Speaker 3: save or sales, right of.
- 16:27Speaker 2: Course, yes.
- 16:29Speaker 3: Pronounced.
- 16:30Speaker 2: Because there's also a castle there, or there was. I
- 16:33Speaker 2: think it had a burn it burned down, But did
- 16:36Speaker 2: they rebuild it?
- 16:37Speaker 3: Yeah? It, and we've been there many times. They it
- 16:40Speaker 3: was a private home. It was this castle that this
- 16:43Speaker 3: couple had traveled the world deciding. You know, they were
- 16:47Speaker 3: so in love and when all around Europe picking out
- 16:50Speaker 3: things for the castle. And while they were building it,
- 16:53Speaker 3: the wife had an affair with the contractor and so
- 16:57Speaker 3: it was like ninety percent complete, eighty percent completed, and
- 17:01Speaker 3: the husband was so heartbroke he got divorced, locked it up,
- 17:04Speaker 3: never finished it, never lived there, and then it was
- 17:08Speaker 3: empty for like forty years or something thirty years, caught
- 17:13Speaker 3: on fire, and then they a different company came and
- 17:19Speaker 3: bought it. Turned it into a super high end hotel
- 17:22Speaker 3: with a restaurant and it's beautiful. It's called the Kentucky Castle.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Wow, we'll have to visit that when we come to visit.
- 17:30Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, we'll go to dinner there. It's kind of
- 17:33Speaker 3: it's really pretty. Yeah, we thought we'd goof around in
- 17:37Speaker 3: town and then but we were so excited to see
- 17:39Speaker 3: the house that we jumped in the rental car and
- 17:43Speaker 3: we had told Robbie and Missy that we'd be checking
- 17:46Speaker 3: in like later afternoon, and so we came and I remember,
- 17:50Speaker 3: do you remember making the turn into the driveway.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Yeah, that's amazing. I will never forgot this day.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Oh wow, it was crazy. It was like online dating,
- 18:02Speaker 3: like we had seen all the pictures we had done.
- 18:04Speaker 3: We had done research and found like news channels the
- 18:07Speaker 3: house was on. Well, a lady that ended up becoming
- 18:11Speaker 3: our friend, Bernadette, met she had done a Good Day
- 18:15Speaker 3: Lexington and they filmed it here at the house and
- 18:17Speaker 3: she talked about the house and we've actually become friends
- 18:21Speaker 3: with her and she's now come to parties of the house.
- 18:23Speaker 3: But we had seen these videos online, but the first
- 18:27Speaker 3: time seeing it it was it was like, you know, date,
- 18:30Speaker 3: talking to someone online and the first date, they're better
- 18:33Speaker 3: than you ever could have anticipated. But it was the
- 18:37Speaker 3: house was so much bigger in person, and it has
- 18:41Speaker 3: it's a four story house with fourteen foot ceilings, but
- 18:45Speaker 3: then it's double trust, so there's two sets of trusts
- 18:48Speaker 3: in between each level, so the house is about the
- 18:52Speaker 3: equivalent of a four and a half story home above ground,
- 18:56Speaker 3: but it's three stories just because the ceiling height is
- 18:59Speaker 3: so crazy. And I remember we were both like we
- 19:03Speaker 3: had butterflies for sure. And we pulled in the driveway
- 19:06Speaker 3: and we started to walk around back and Robbie and
- 19:09Speaker 3: Missy came in and caught us and they're like, oh, no,
- 19:12Speaker 3: we're just dropping off some extra pillows. We were trying
- 19:14Speaker 3: to do it before you guys got here. And by
- 19:18Speaker 3: then they had heard that we had come to look
- 19:20Speaker 3: at buying the house. They're like, well, let's give you
- 19:23Speaker 3: the tour that the realtor can't give you. And so
- 19:27Speaker 3: we went through and Robbie had us laughing so hard.
- 19:31Speaker 3: He was telling us like the town secrets, all the
- 19:34Speaker 3: history of the house, stuff he probably shouldn't have and
- 19:37Speaker 3: that's what like, we instantly bonded with him over at
- 19:40Speaker 3: him and Missy. He had told us what they had
- 19:43Speaker 3: learned and all of their research in the house and everything,
- 19:46Speaker 3: and it was a lot of fun. And then was
- 19:49Speaker 3: it later that same day than Larry came and then
- 19:51Speaker 3: he gave us the tour, Yes, and it was, you know,
- 19:54Speaker 3: more the factual realtor side of everything. But we had
- 19:58Speaker 3: learned that like the house. There was was tunnels under
- 20:01Speaker 3: the house. There was perhaps some cornbread mafia moonshining. Someone
- 20:08Speaker 3: was murdered. After the murder, the tunnel was filled back in.
- 20:11Speaker 3: The house had like this super rich history which made
- 20:15Speaker 3: us fall in love with it even more.
- 20:17Speaker 1: What year was a built and how old is it?
- 20:20Speaker 3: It was built in eighteen sixty five, Abraham Lincoln was president.
- 20:26Speaker 3: We had just finished the Civil War, not World War One,
- 20:30Speaker 3: the Civil War, Civil War, and it was the house
- 20:36Speaker 3: predates indoor plumbing. The family had servants, and so if
- 20:41Speaker 3: the family had to go to the bathroom in middle
- 20:43Speaker 3: of the night, they had chamber pots with the servants
- 20:45Speaker 3: would change out every morning and fresh water was brought
- 20:49Speaker 3: into the room. Yeah, if they had if they needed
- 20:52Speaker 3: to go during the day and it was like nice weather.
- 20:55Speaker 3: There was like essentially a fancy outhouse in the back
- 20:59Speaker 3: of the house house. But the house didn't have electricity.
- 21:03Speaker 3: It had gas so in the house and we've kept
- 21:06Speaker 3: so many of those things. There was the little gas
- 21:08Speaker 3: lines where all the gas lamps would have been. It
- 21:12Speaker 3: had eight fireplaces. That that was how they heated the house.
- 21:16Speaker 2: And do you have you kept all eight fireplaces there too?
- 21:20Speaker 3: Have been covered up on the third floor, but the
- 21:23Speaker 3: other six we have all of them. Because it was
- 21:27Speaker 3: a more formal house, it was coal burning instead of fire,
- 21:31Speaker 3: so they're not as deep, and then the coal sat
- 21:34Speaker 3: in these like baskets. They're beautiful fireplaces. The main one
- 21:39Speaker 3: in the formal dining was all imported from France. It's
- 21:44Speaker 3: a French fireplace that they put in. And the library
- 21:48Speaker 3: it's this carved tiger. Oh. The ones on the next
- 21:52Speaker 3: level I think are all marble. There's even some of
- 21:55Speaker 3: the gas. We're in our library now, but on the
- 21:58Speaker 3: wall there's these little gas where you turn the gas
- 22:01Speaker 3: on and off and the lights would glow, and the
- 22:04Speaker 3: chandeliers were all gas.
- 22:07Speaker 2: I can see a ladder behind Zeid. Is that a
- 22:09Speaker 2: ladder that goes up the bookcase? What is that ladder?
- 22:12Speaker 3: Yeah? And so much of the house. We're so much
- 22:16Speaker 3: further along in the remodel than we've ever let on.
- 22:20Speaker 3: But we the family, we've become friends with many of them,
- 22:24Speaker 3: and they would always call this room the library the library,
- 22:27Speaker 3: and we're like, there's no shelves, there's no books. So
- 22:30Speaker 3: Zeid watched YouTube learned how to make cabinets. I'm obsessed
- 22:34Speaker 3: with molding, so I had sketched out. So we now
- 22:38Speaker 3: have Florida ceiling, fourteen bookcases completely full of books.
- 22:43Speaker 2: Wow, all of.
- 22:44Speaker 3: The artifacts from our travels. But we yeah, we have
- 22:48Speaker 3: the library ladder in here. We've turned it into like
- 22:52Speaker 3: a real like gentleman's library.
- 22:55Speaker 1: Right, fill it with anti complete with us kind.
- 23:01Speaker 2: I know, I can see all these treasures behind them.
- 23:04Speaker 3: Oh yeah, it's a real Yeah. Whenever we'd move it
- 23:10Speaker 3: on the shelf, I'm like, I don't. But he's part
- 23:14Speaker 3: of the family. We've got paintings above the fireplace, there's
- 23:18Speaker 3: the ceiling and the chandelier, so we've made a story.
- 23:23Speaker 3: This guy, he's a general in the Civil War. The fireplace,
- 23:30Speaker 3: so this is his girlfriend. She was the mistress. And
- 23:34Speaker 3: then next door there's the formal drawing room and there's
- 23:39Speaker 3: a woman very regal. She's the wife, but because of
- 23:44Speaker 3: the affair, he has to now be in here forever
- 23:47Speaker 3: looking at her while the wife's in the other room.
- 23:50Speaker 3: And then their daughter, their daughters out in the grand salon.
- 23:55Speaker 2: I just love history in this house, all the family, yes,
- 24:01Speaker 2: along with all of yours. Wow, So how much of
- 24:06Speaker 2: the house do you still have to do do you
- 24:09Speaker 2: do you have still? Are you finished or are you
- 24:12Speaker 2: still completing portions?
- 24:14Speaker 3: A house like this, it'll never be.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Done because I know you also have now a second
- 24:19Speaker 2: house in Kentucky that you're working on.
- 24:22Speaker 3: Yes, some days I'm like, what are we thinking? Zide?
- 24:25Speaker 3: We wake up so early in the morning, go to
- 24:29Speaker 3: the gym, go work all day, come home, eat, then
- 24:31Speaker 3: work on this house. This house was actually done what
- 24:36Speaker 3: two weeks ago? Yes, And then we went into Zaide's
- 24:41Speaker 3: bathroom and while my dad was here visiting, we just
- 24:44Speaker 3: started jack hammering the walls. We took the whole bathroom out,
- 24:49Speaker 3: ripped out the baths of the walls. We're down to
- 24:53Speaker 3: like the original plaster from eighteen sixty five. And so
- 24:59Speaker 3: we've had dust throughout the house.
- 25:01Speaker 2: And why did you do that? Is that? Is this
- 25:04Speaker 2: where there was a window that had been covered up?
- 25:06Speaker 2: Or why did you take the wall down?
- 25:08Speaker 3: Yeah? So the window we didn't even know we had
- 25:12Speaker 3: that window for like the first month we lived here,
- 25:15Speaker 3: and then one day we're like, where does this window go?
- 25:18Speaker 3: Because like the house. We then figured it out, but
- 25:21Speaker 3: they had put like a shower system in there that
- 25:24Speaker 3: was covering the window. So you didn't see it in
- 25:26Speaker 3: the bathroom. But what's interesting about that bathroom was the
- 25:30Speaker 3: home never had indoor plumbing, and the home has all
- 25:33Speaker 3: of the doors. Have you guys watched the Gilded Age
- 25:37Speaker 3: No no TV series? Oh, it's so good, but it's
- 25:41Speaker 3: all about the Astors and the Rockefellers and like all
- 25:47Speaker 3: of the super prominent families. But it has like the
- 25:51Speaker 3: homes that have the servants. And we've learned so much
- 25:54Speaker 3: just from that because we have all of our huge
- 25:57Speaker 3: grand rooms have multiple doors, and it was the servants
- 26:02Speaker 3: were never meant to be seen. They were supposed to
- 26:04Speaker 3: run the whole house, you know, bring everyone fresh water
- 26:08Speaker 3: in the morning, change the chamber pots, have all the
- 26:11Speaker 3: food ready. The family didn't do anything, and so there's
- 26:16Speaker 3: all these doors to section and divide it off. But
- 26:19Speaker 3: the home never had indoor plumbing. So we've recently found out.
- 26:23Speaker 3: We've been doing home genealogy. We've been to the library
- 26:28Speaker 3: many times. The people in the town have given us
- 26:31Speaker 3: pictures and information. But we found out the bathroom here
- 26:35Speaker 3: near us on the main floor was the butler's pantry.
- 26:39Speaker 3: So they would cook the food. The cook would bring
- 26:42Speaker 3: it into the butler and in the butler pantry. That's
- 26:45Speaker 3: where he would put it on the silver and get
- 26:47Speaker 3: it all ready for the family. And then there's a
- 26:49Speaker 3: very formal door that went from the butler pantry out
- 26:53Speaker 3: into the formal dining where then the butler would give
- 26:57Speaker 3: the food. And in the formal dining room there's a
- 26:59Speaker 3: swim on the floor where the family would tap the
- 27:03Speaker 3: switch with their foot when they were ready for the
- 27:05Speaker 3: next course. Wow, there's one of those.
- 27:09Speaker 2: Quite the system.
- 27:12Speaker 3: And then in the breakfast room there's one of those
- 27:15Speaker 3: as well. So we have four places to eat in
- 27:18Speaker 3: the house. You have the formal dining, we have the
- 27:21Speaker 3: breakfast room, The sun room is for like morning coffee
- 27:25Speaker 3: and snacks, and then the kitchen is also an eating kitchen.
- 27:29Speaker 3: But a lot of these rooms we never use until
- 27:32Speaker 3: people come visits. So when you guys come, we'll have
- 27:34Speaker 3: to we'll do a checklist, we'll do something in the.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Events in all the rooms. Now, tell me, are you
- 27:40Speaker 2: so now that you sounds like you have a new
- 27:43Speaker 2: project with the bathroom, But is the goal to eventually
- 27:47Speaker 2: open up your home for guests or for special events weddings?
- 27:52Speaker 2: What is your long term goal other than living in
- 27:56Speaker 2: it and enjoying it.
- 27:58Speaker 3: It's always just supposed to have been our home, but
- 28:03Speaker 3: so many people have so many memories of the house,
- 28:06Speaker 3: and a lot of people have asked us to We
- 28:09Speaker 3: would never airbnb or anything, because we've got like nights
- 28:14Speaker 3: that you know, were imported from Germany and bearskin rugs
- 28:19Speaker 3: and febra rugs and super old antique paintings, and but
- 28:24Speaker 3: we've thought about if like someone came in like a
- 28:28Speaker 3: like a corporate weekend or something, or like more of
- 28:31Speaker 3: a retreat, we could rent it out to something like
- 28:34Speaker 3: that where it was just a big bass feed just
- 28:36Speaker 3: the weekend. People have asked us also to do use
- 28:41Speaker 3: it for photo shoots. Oh yeah, bridles people. They used
- 28:46Speaker 3: to do weddings here, and like when we first came,
- 28:49Speaker 3: it had the the couple we bought it from, they
- 28:52Speaker 3: never lived here. They used it as kind of more
- 28:55Speaker 3: like an event center, and then they leased it to
- 28:58Speaker 3: somebody that kind of it had a bridle shop and
- 29:01Speaker 3: then do weddings. But the house was in such a
- 29:04Speaker 3: different like it felt like a venue.
- 29:07Speaker 4: Oh it didn't.
- 29:08Speaker 2: It didn't feel like lived in like home.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's it was sparsely furnished and I think
- 29:17Speaker 3: like me and Zeid have been collecting antiques and animals
- 29:20Speaker 3: and trophies and all these things for just years, Like
- 29:24Speaker 3: we've always known that, like eventually we'd have a house
- 29:28Speaker 3: like this, So I think in bringing everything. We recently
- 29:31Speaker 3: had a Halloween party and Robbie and Missy came and
- 29:36Speaker 3: the daughter's like, Dad, why did we sell this place?
- 29:39Speaker 3: His exact words were, because we never imagined it could
- 29:42Speaker 3: look like this. Yeah, they didn't have the vision for
- 29:45Speaker 3: him compliment we could get.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Yeah, beautiful, that's beautiful.
- 29:49Speaker 1: So the original people who built this house, was it
- 29:53Speaker 1: like a plantation or you know what?
- 29:55Speaker 3: What was it?
- 29:56Speaker 1: Do you know that history? Yeah?
- 29:58Speaker 2: Was it a summer home a get away home?
- 30:00Speaker 3: No, it was there. So they built it the year
- 30:04Speaker 3: the Civil War ended. So that was one thing that
- 30:08Speaker 3: always made me happy was it was never a home
- 30:11Speaker 3: with slaves or anything like that. It was it was
- 30:15Speaker 3: just a very grand home. The people were the we're
- 30:19Speaker 3: only the eighth owners in a hundred and sixty one years,
- 30:25Speaker 3: so it was always like affluent families. But we found
- 30:29Speaker 3: there was a few people that had it for just
- 30:32Speaker 3: a few years. But the first people owned it and
- 30:35Speaker 3: it was it was a grand home. But it had
- 30:37Speaker 3: like a gabled roof and was a little smaller than
- 30:40Speaker 3: it was now. And then the second owner, he was
- 30:44Speaker 3: a Verruin lawyer who owned his own law firm in Louisville.
- 30:50Speaker 3: We're about an hour away from Louisville. But back then
- 30:54Speaker 3: it was a full day carriage ride. Because this is
- 30:57Speaker 3: the end of the eighteen hundreds. Cars weren't invented for
- 31:00Speaker 3: another thirty years. Yeah, but he did a big addition
- 31:04Speaker 3: to it. They had a few renovations that just kept
- 31:08Speaker 3: making it grander and grander. They had one daughter, him
- 31:11Speaker 3: and his wife. Her name was Laura. His name was
- 31:14Speaker 3: Sam Averrett. And for his daughter, Laura's sixteenth birthday, they
- 31:19Speaker 3: built the third floor, which is actually a ballroom. So
- 31:23Speaker 3: they added the ballroom to the house for her sixteenth birthday. Wow,
- 31:27Speaker 3: Like if that's not few.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Money, Wow, that's crazy.
- 31:31Speaker 3: And someone sent us a picture before the third floor
- 31:35Speaker 3: was added, And the third floor was added in eighteen
- 31:38Speaker 3: ninety and so the picture is one hundred and thirty
- 31:42Speaker 3: years it's the oldest picture we have of the house.
- 31:45Speaker 2: Wow.
- 31:46Speaker 3: Yeah, it's wild. All the history that we found out
- 31:49Speaker 3: about it, the people. There was a lady that owned it,
- 31:51Speaker 3: before Robbie and Missy Yeah, and she owned it for
- 31:56Speaker 3: seventy years and their last name was Fairal. And we've
- 31:59Speaker 3: met a lot of these super cute ladies that they
- 32:04Speaker 3: are Missus Ferrell's granddaughters, but they're you know, the granddaughters
- 32:10Speaker 3: are sixties seventies, and we've had dinner with them, we
- 32:16Speaker 3: go to like they've become like super close friends. They
- 32:19Speaker 3: have told us all these stories. And Missus Farrell lived
- 32:22Speaker 3: here on her own. She died a month before she
- 32:25Speaker 3: turned one hundred and five. Oh boy, And so so
- 32:29Speaker 3: many of the family members have said all of our
- 32:32Speaker 3: best memories are in this house. This house was full
- 32:35Speaker 3: of people and laughing and happiness, and so we've always felt.
- 32:39Speaker 2: Like good, bad energy.
- 32:42Speaker 3: We've had a few scary things. Zayid's thought he'd seen
- 32:47Speaker 3: some things and moms had people talk to her that
- 32:50Speaker 3: there was no one really talking to her. But it's
- 32:53Speaker 3: a big house that makes a lot of noises, but
- 32:56Speaker 3: it's always had and it was Missus Farrell her husband.
- 33:00Speaker 3: He owned a lumberyard and tobacco fields. But they think
- 33:03Speaker 3: that there might have been some shady things going on.
- 33:07Speaker 3: He was murdered in nineteen seventy five while living in
- 33:11Speaker 3: the home that he was out and something happened. They
- 33:14Speaker 3: had his funeral here in the home, and the whole town,
- 33:17Speaker 3: they said, they laid him out in the grand salon
- 33:20Speaker 3: and the whole town would just come through the house
- 33:22Speaker 3: and pay their respects. And two of the other owners
- 33:26Speaker 3: have died in the home. They were both presidents of
- 33:30Speaker 3: the same big bank here in town. Wow, there's a
- 33:34Speaker 3: lot of a lot of history.
- 33:36Speaker 1: Let me ask you guys, you did I know, I
- 33:39Speaker 1: saw some videos that you did that showed the renovation
- 33:42Speaker 1: and that kind of stuff. So have you got that
- 33:44Speaker 1: like on a YouTube channel or is it just on
- 33:46Speaker 1: your social media or where could people go check that out.
- 33:50Speaker 3: We've started to put a lot on YouTube. We need
- 33:54Speaker 3: We still have more we need to do, and there's
- 33:56Speaker 3: so many We've only made videos for about a heard
- 34:00Speaker 3: of the projects we've done, and so like people will
- 34:04Speaker 3: come to the house and they're like, oh my gosh,
- 34:06Speaker 3: like this. You know, We're like, we know, we're so busy,
- 34:09Speaker 3: we get so laser focused that we're not sharing what
- 34:13Speaker 3: we're going through. So we need to catch up and
- 34:16Speaker 3: do it. But there is Guardian Mansion page on YouTube
- 34:21Speaker 3: and then the Guardian Mansion Instagram, but we're we're needing
- 34:26Speaker 3: to catch up on those.
- 34:28Speaker 1: You have a big tour like where you've walked around
- 34:30Speaker 1: all the rooms and short you have anything like that,
- 34:34Speaker 1: like a virtual we haven't yet.
- 34:36Speaker 3: We've just recently we were putting together the videos of
- 34:40Speaker 3: the first night we stayed in the house of what
- 34:43Speaker 3: it looked like before, and then we need to get
- 34:46Speaker 3: that up. But we that first day was so funny
- 34:49Speaker 3: because we came in I think we're here a little
- 34:52Speaker 3: before Robbie and Missy came with the pillows, and we
- 34:55Speaker 3: were both walking in different rooms and we were on
- 34:58Speaker 3: the main level and we cross paths like I think
- 35:01Speaker 3: was I in the formal dining and I was going
- 35:04Speaker 3: from the drawing room and sides library. We scared each
- 35:09Speaker 3: other like we both like it was so quiet, ceilings
- 35:14Speaker 3: are so high, everything echoes and you're transported to another
- 35:18Speaker 3: time because so much of the house. All of the
- 35:21Speaker 3: door handles are like gilded carved gold. It has the
- 35:24Speaker 3: little key things that hide the skeleton key holes on
- 35:27Speaker 3: both sides. The hinges look like the golden plates when
- 35:31Speaker 3: they're open on all the huge doors there. Yeah, it's
- 35:35Speaker 3: just we're in another time. So we did a video
- 35:38Speaker 3: of when we just came because mom and dad wanted
- 35:41Speaker 3: to see it. We didn't tell anybody we are coming
- 35:43Speaker 3: to look at houses. We just said we're coming on
- 35:46Speaker 3: a trip. And the three houses we looked at we
- 35:49Speaker 3: posted all of the three houses. While we were here.
- 35:52Speaker 3: We had one friend say are you guys house shopping?
- 35:56Speaker 3: Like nobody knew. And then we went home and we're like, well,
- 36:00Speaker 3: what let's make an offer? Like what is an offer? Hurt?
- 36:04Speaker 3: And we like racked our brains. We thought like how
- 36:07Speaker 3: much you know, things would be to renovate, like what
- 36:09Speaker 3: it would make it worth it to move there. We
- 36:11Speaker 3: made the offer and we were very close to what
- 36:15Speaker 3: they wanted, and the offer that soon was accepted, and
- 36:19Speaker 3: I'm like, oh my hell's eye, like kind of hyperventilating.
- 36:22Speaker 3: And then I'm like, well, we'll do the inspection. Can
- 36:25Speaker 3: you imagine the inspection on one hundred and sixty one.
- 36:28Speaker 2: Year old house that I can't even.
- 36:31Speaker 3: Like Abraham was probably here and it came back and
- 36:36Speaker 3: the vector was like, well, Nate, this house has been
- 36:39Speaker 3: standing for one hundred and sixty years, Like it's got
- 36:43Speaker 3: at least that much longer to go, and I mean
- 36:47Speaker 3: it had a lot of things, but like nothing in
- 36:50Speaker 3: our crazy minds was something we couldn't fix. And then
- 36:54Speaker 3: we're like, okay, well you know now, let's you know,
- 36:57Speaker 3: maybe if the next step, if that goes through, and
- 37:01Speaker 3: like things just kept landing in place and we're like,
- 37:05Speaker 3: well let's do it.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Well, let me ask you something, both of you, as
- 37:09Speaker 2: you've renovated it now and you've brought this new life
- 37:13Speaker 2: back to this house that was once this grand house
- 37:16Speaker 2: you know, where Missus Farrell lived and even the people
- 37:19Speaker 2: before her and was full of life. And then like
- 37:23Speaker 2: the one that just that sold it to you, like
- 37:26Speaker 2: he said, we didn't envision that it could be like
- 37:28Speaker 2: this living in the space now that you've kind of
- 37:32Speaker 2: breathed life back into it and vibrancy the house is amazing.
- 37:38Speaker 2: What has it given each of you? Like, what has
- 37:41Speaker 2: this project brought to yourselves in terms of vibrancy or
- 37:47Speaker 2: just what does it say to you when you look
- 37:49Speaker 2: around and you're like, wow, we did this. How does
- 37:52Speaker 2: that feel? Or what does that give you?
- 37:54Speaker 1: Each of you? This is the part where I re
- 37:56Speaker 1: asks the questions that go deep.
- 37:59Speaker 2: Because I'm always intrigued because I you know, I know
- 38:02Speaker 2: it has it has to give you something for sure.
- 38:05Speaker 2: You know there has to be something so deep that
- 38:07Speaker 2: it gives you that. It's like, wow, yeah, it gave
- 38:10Speaker 2: me this.
- 38:11Speaker 3: There's been just exactly what you said. There's been so
- 38:14Speaker 3: many times that we walk into a room and I'm like,
- 38:18Speaker 3: say we get this. We're taken back even still, like
- 38:23Speaker 3: last night coming home, Like we've got the lights that
- 38:26Speaker 3: come on the house at night. There's so many times
- 38:28Speaker 3: we park in the driveway We're like, do you live here?
- 38:32Speaker 3: Do you live here?
- 38:33Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 38:33Speaker 3: I live here? Can you believe we live here? And
- 38:36Speaker 3: we park in the driveway and just say that? But
- 38:39Speaker 3: I think I'll let you think a little longer. But
- 38:42Speaker 3: the biggest thing for me is talking about it now
- 38:45Speaker 3: very generally well. And I jokingly said this about a
- 38:49Speaker 3: month ago. I said, there's nothing we can't do, Like,
- 38:52Speaker 3: there's truly nothing. There's things we prefer not to do,
- 38:56Speaker 3: like plumbing. I would rather have someone else do that.
- 39:00Speaker 3: There's things with this house too that like it's not
- 39:03Speaker 3: like run to lows and get something. Nothing in our house.
- 39:08Speaker 3: All of the doorknobs, the door locks, the door mechanisms,
- 39:12Speaker 3: you can't even find that on eBay. Dad was down
- 39:15Speaker 3: in our cellar recently we just completely finished cleaning up.
- 39:19Speaker 3: He was in shock and awe. He's like, is this
- 39:22Speaker 3: even the same house? But he told us, he's like,
- 39:25Speaker 3: you're miles of iron pipe. No one could afford to
- 39:29Speaker 3: do this in a house now, like right, you know,
- 39:32Speaker 3: like our pipes, like you'll see where the new pipes
- 39:35Speaker 3: are and the old pipes. But it's just all of
- 39:37Speaker 3: the things we've done collectively, which just summing it up
- 39:41Speaker 3: really fast is like I just think I can't believe
- 39:45Speaker 3: we did this and we're still doing it. Like well,
- 39:47Speaker 3: a house like this you have to truly love and
- 39:50Speaker 3: you'll always it'll never be done. Up to a week
- 39:54Speaker 3: or two ago, it was done enough, and then we're
- 39:57Speaker 3: like nope, you know, while we're trying to finish this
- 40:00Speaker 3: other house, let's cause more problems and messes in this house.
- 40:04Speaker 3: But I think for me that being is like we
- 40:07Speaker 3: can do anything painting just one room, like with fourteen
- 40:11Speaker 3: foot tall ceilings, like you can't even use a normal ladder,
- 40:15Speaker 3: like we had to go buy these like super high
- 40:18Speaker 3: end construction ladders that then we have to build scaffolding
- 40:21Speaker 3: just to paint a room, like house is handing on
- 40:26Speaker 3: the floor and you paint your walls. But I'm six
- 40:29Speaker 3: foot so it's me standing on top of me with
- 40:31Speaker 3: another third of me, you know, just to equal the
- 40:35Speaker 3: wall size. And so for me, it's like there's nothing
- 40:39Speaker 3: we can't do. We'll watch these castle renovations in France
- 40:42Speaker 3: and Spain and I'm like, our house is so little,
- 40:45Speaker 3: Like let's get one of these, Like.
- 40:48Speaker 2: Let's get a big castle.
- 40:50Speaker 4: Dude, yeah, a big castle.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Well it's because of bat mentality, like we can do anything,
- 41:01Speaker 3: like a renovate a village. Let me.
- 41:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a lot of a lot of love, a
- 41:08Speaker 4: lot of a lot of love. Yeah. We wake up
- 41:14Speaker 4: and looking the wall. Maybe we will bank this wall
- 41:19Speaker 4: next month, all right, we will fix something more like
- 41:23Speaker 4: make better every day.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Two along those exact lines, like as we make things better,
- 41:31Speaker 3: then we're looking at rooms that were completely done and
- 41:34Speaker 3: we're like, well we now the library has this like
- 41:38Speaker 3: elegant new box molding, but now the drawing room doesn't
- 41:41Speaker 3: have that molding, right.
- 41:42Speaker 2: So we keep trying to outperform. But I love what
- 41:46Speaker 2: what I'm hearing is one from Zaid. You're saying it's
- 41:49Speaker 2: a lot of love to just understand your own expression
- 41:53Speaker 2: of love is in the house, is in every single room,
- 41:57Speaker 2: and is in everything from the door knobs to then
- 42:00Speaker 2: you know, to the the keys in the door, to
- 42:04Speaker 2: the moldings. It's all an expression of the love that
- 42:07Speaker 2: the two of you have for each other as you
- 42:10Speaker 2: do it, but also for the house. And then I
- 42:12Speaker 2: love that it just gives you this expansive feeling like
- 42:16Speaker 2: there's nothing weak that we can't do. And so let's
- 42:20Speaker 2: do a big I'm ready for a big castle. I
- 42:23Speaker 2: want that.
- 42:25Speaker 3: Castle and a village. We'll renovate it all.
- 42:29Speaker 1: We just finished remodeling our house, you know, and and
- 42:32Speaker 1: we just did the kitchen. Well, we did the whole house.
- 42:37Speaker 2: Well, we get over time.
- 42:38Speaker 1: But the last, but the last little piece was the
- 42:40Speaker 1: bathroom downstairs stairs. That was the last thing to do
- 42:44Speaker 1: we had to do.
- 42:45Speaker 2: And I was a puddle twice and it was went
- 42:47Speaker 2: over the bathroom.
- 42:48Speaker 1: When it finally got done, Ray, we walked downstairs and
- 42:51Speaker 1: Ray said, what's your favorite thing about this? And I
- 42:55Speaker 1: said that it's.
- 42:56Speaker 2: Done, I know, and I wanted it. You tell me like, oh,
- 43:01Speaker 2: it's the sink or it's the the extended bathroom or
- 43:05Speaker 2: the little bench in the bathroom, and he's like that
- 43:07Speaker 2: it's done, It's done.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Well, Uh, you know, it was messy. It was so
- 43:14Speaker 1: messy during that process. And you know, you guys remember
- 43:18Speaker 1: the movie The Money Pit. When you're in an old
- 43:22Speaker 1: When you're in an old house, there's always stuff that
- 43:25Speaker 1: you have no idea what, what is what, And there's
- 43:29Speaker 1: always surprises. And I can only imagine how many surprises
- 43:33Speaker 1: there had to have been in in where you're.
- 43:35Speaker 2: At a in a house old.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, the concepts of how they even did things in
- 43:42Speaker 1: those days were not even around anymore. And it's in
- 43:45Speaker 1: that house that you're in.
- 43:47Speaker 2: I'll quick say. I think it's also the history of
- 43:49Speaker 2: something standing for so long and all the lives that
- 43:55Speaker 2: have lived through it, and and you know, I'm kind
- 43:58Speaker 2: of going to get a little but it's like this
- 44:01Speaker 2: house has loved how many people and how many families,
- 44:06Speaker 2: and the love that you give back to it is
- 44:09Speaker 2: in part what helps it just continue to stand is
- 44:12Speaker 2: this icon of like home and the two of you.
- 44:17Speaker 2: I mean it, I just can't wait to come and
- 44:19Speaker 2: see it and to feel the energy of it because
- 44:22Speaker 2: talking to you, I can I can feel it.
- 44:24Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, exactly. We're in a few of these home
- 44:29Speaker 3: groups where people like, whenever we make a post, there's
- 44:33Speaker 3: thousands of comments and likes, and people will tell us
- 44:37Speaker 3: they're like, thank you for loving this home. So many
- 44:40Speaker 3: of these houses and we see these videos and it's
- 44:43Speaker 3: like the ASPCA abused animal commercials, like where we'll see
- 44:47Speaker 3: homes get tore down and we're like, why didn't they
- 44:49Speaker 3: save it? Like it breaks my heart to think that
- 44:53Speaker 3: some of these homes for exactly that like there's all
- 44:55Speaker 3: these memories here and it would be so much easier
- 44:59Speaker 3: to build new and not because we've had problems. The
- 45:04Speaker 3: home is a Second Empire, which is what most of
- 45:09Speaker 3: modern day Paris is built from the eighteen fifty to
- 45:13Speaker 3: eighteen seventy. So they all have the same roof and
- 45:17Speaker 3: it's the Napoleon third style. The first Napoleon did Empire
- 45:21Speaker 3: style and that was early early eighteen hundreds, and then
- 45:24Speaker 3: the mid eighteen hundreds was Second Empire, and it was
- 45:27Speaker 3: Napoleon Third that kind of pushed that. But that's what
- 45:31Speaker 3: all of Paris is essentially. And so with this house,
- 45:35Speaker 3: our roof is individually handcut tiles of slate, so like
- 45:40Speaker 3: we're missing a few, and we're like, okay, how do
- 45:44Speaker 3: we find a man that knows how to take a
- 45:47Speaker 3: slate rock, chisel it with his hammer, like create a
- 45:51Speaker 3: new shingle for us and put it back in so
- 45:54Speaker 3: so many of our things we're watching. We watch these
- 45:57Speaker 3: old European remodelings because like the UA can't, there's not
- 46:02Speaker 3: a lot of resources here for homes, you know, this
- 46:06Speaker 3: old that are still standing to fix some the way
- 46:09Speaker 3: you properly should. Yeah, we love it. And in the
- 46:13Speaker 3: old home groups, just strangers thanking us, thank you for
- 46:16Speaker 3: and like it's like, well, yeah, it's our house, we're
- 46:18Speaker 3: going to fix it. But like it's they have such
- 46:20Speaker 3: a love and appreciation for this, you know, architecture and
- 46:24Speaker 3: how rare these homes are, because it would be so
- 46:27Speaker 3: much easier to, you know, build a new house that
- 46:31Speaker 3: kind of looks like this.
- 46:33Speaker 2: Well, I definitely think you should reach out to the gentleman,
- 46:36Speaker 2: the architectural person that came and stayed at the carriage
- 46:40Speaker 2: house and loved the carriage house so much. You should
- 46:43Speaker 2: definitely reach out and invite him to come see your
- 46:45Speaker 2: project in Kentucky, because I am sure he would be
- 46:50Speaker 2: just amazed at what you've accomplished there. I want everyone
- 46:54Speaker 2: to see it. I want I want everyone to see
- 46:56Speaker 2: it and feel feel the love that you have for it.
- 46:59Speaker 2: It's kind of a reminder for us to all take
- 47:02Speaker 2: more serious the containers that we call home and make
- 47:08Speaker 2: them so meaningful, you know. And like you said, I
- 47:12Speaker 2: so much love in everything that we do, and sometimes
- 47:16Speaker 2: we take it all for granted.
- 47:19Speaker 1: Yeah, we created in an intentional right to live.
- 47:23Speaker 2: Or we live in them and and kind of longingly
- 47:27Speaker 2: wish for something else to live in. We don't live
- 47:29Speaker 2: present in the present moment, in the space, do you
- 47:32Speaker 2: know what I mean? So I think that that this
- 47:37Speaker 2: whole renovation and watching you guys, you know, bring back
- 47:43Speaker 2: to life this beautiful story of this house has just
- 47:46Speaker 2: been amazing. It reminds me there was a movie I
- 47:50Speaker 2: think recently done that showed like kind of going back
- 47:54Speaker 2: to the early nineteen hundreds and a space It wasn't
- 47:58Speaker 2: even I don't think it was even a whole. It
- 48:00Speaker 2: may have had elements of a home, but just all
- 48:04Speaker 2: the generations in years that had gone and moved through
- 48:07Speaker 2: this space and what that space had meant. I think
- 48:10Speaker 2: Tom Hanks was in it. But I think about that
- 48:13Speaker 2: as I think about this mansion, because I know you
- 48:16Speaker 2: had told a story once and it must have been
- 48:18Speaker 2: one of these granddaughters, these seventy year old granddaughters that
- 48:22Speaker 2: talked about sliding down the banister when they would come
- 48:26Speaker 2: to visit ground.
- 48:27Speaker 3: What's funny is the house is so old that, like
- 48:31Speaker 3: the railing is a little lower than like you would
- 48:34Speaker 3: think it would be in the doorknobs or a little
- 48:36Speaker 3: lower because people, Victorian people, the average man was five
- 48:42Speaker 3: five or five six in Victorian times and the average
- 48:45Speaker 3: woman was like four to eleven, so much shorter because
- 48:49Speaker 3: our doors on this level are twelve feet tall. But
- 48:54Speaker 3: it was like some of those things. But like the railing,
- 48:57Speaker 3: like I would get close to the railing in sites
- 49:00Speaker 3: get Away, get Away. Yeah, of them sliding down that railing.
- 49:05Speaker 3: We've heard stories where someone slid He had two names.
- 49:09Speaker 3: It was like Tommy Joe, no Billy Joe or something.
- 49:13Speaker 3: He slid down the railing, lost his footing and flew
- 49:16Speaker 3: out the front door. But our friend Bernadette, who was
- 49:19Speaker 3: on I think it was good Morning Lesington, she texted
- 49:24Speaker 3: me the video of her doing it when she came
- 49:26Speaker 3: here to film the segment and yeah, all these just
- 49:30Speaker 3: funny memories of the happy memories. And the one thing
- 49:34Speaker 3: when we bought it. The reason it's called Guardian Mansion
- 49:37Speaker 3: is because there's I don't know if I've told you
- 49:39Speaker 3: guys this, but there's an angel in the third floor window,
- 49:43Speaker 3: if I told you. And so they when we bought
- 49:48Speaker 3: it from Robbie and Missy, they're like, she has to
- 49:51Speaker 3: come with the home. She's as old as the home,
- 49:53Speaker 3: and it's back. It's so old that they would design
- 49:57Speaker 3: sculptures out of horsehair and then they would put plaster
- 50:01Speaker 3: on top of the horse hair because it was too
- 50:02Speaker 3: expensive to make sculptures out of pure plaster because back
- 50:06Speaker 3: then plaster was so much money. So she was made
- 50:10Speaker 3: out of horsehair covered in plaster and she sits in
- 50:15Speaker 3: We call it the Amboela Room. It's our grandma room.
- 50:18Speaker 3: We have Zayid's grandma and both my grandma, like all
- 50:22Speaker 3: their pictures up there. And it's the more it's one
- 50:26Speaker 3: of the more over the top bedrooms, like it has
- 50:29Speaker 3: the huge lace canopy that comes down over the bed
- 50:32Speaker 3: and because of the other it has these new crystal
- 50:36Speaker 3: gorgeous lamps. But in that room she's in the window
- 50:40Speaker 3: and she's the Guardian. And like when we first bought
- 50:43Speaker 3: the house, so many people said, you're not taking her
- 50:47Speaker 3: out of the window. You're not taking out of the window,
- 50:49Speaker 3: are you. And I guess when people drive by, they
- 50:51Speaker 3: always look up to make sure that the guardian's still
- 50:54Speaker 3: there looking over the town because there's no other house
- 50:58Speaker 3: in the county is tall is our house, So our
- 51:02Speaker 3: top floor, like she's looking like all over the whole
- 51:05Speaker 3: town to kind of look over them and protect them.
- 51:09Speaker 3: And so it's that's where the name Guardian Mansion came from.
- 51:14Speaker 3: We also have an ancient ginko tree that they believe
- 51:18Speaker 3: one of the guys that signed the Declaration of Independence
- 51:21Speaker 3: planted it. I said John Adams, I don't remember, but
- 51:25Speaker 3: the trees as old as the house, and so Missus
- 51:28Speaker 3: Farrell for a long time called it Ginko Manor, But
- 51:33Speaker 3: I think Guardian Mansion was the one that kind of stuck.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. And this this angel. So it's
- 51:44Speaker 2: a statue. It's not a light or anything. It's a
- 51:46Speaker 2: statue that's in the window.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yeah, she's a statue. And when we were cleaning the
- 51:52Speaker 3: whole as grand and huge as the house is the
- 51:54Speaker 3: whole house has one closet wild it's all the benchroom
- 52:00Speaker 3: has wardrobes and oh yeah a few of those. But
- 52:04Speaker 3: the one closet that the whole house has we found
- 52:09Speaker 3: her wings have been broke, but the wings it she
- 52:11Speaker 3: has wings, but we found out they used to be
- 52:14Speaker 3: so much bigger, and so we found the wings and
- 52:17Speaker 3: want to have them restored. But it's I mean, she's
- 52:21Speaker 3: so old that like we'd have to go to like
- 52:24Speaker 3: some museum kind of person right to do it. But
- 52:27Speaker 3: the interesting thing we found out she's actually a mourning angel.
- 52:31Speaker 3: She's down on one knee with her head down, so
- 52:34Speaker 3: she's she's the guardian of the town, but like she's
- 52:38Speaker 3: actually like mourning lost. And so that was when we
- 52:42Speaker 3: were doing the rooms. They've all got like a theme.
- 52:45Speaker 3: We're like, this is gonna be our Grandma room because
- 52:47Speaker 3: she's our grandmas are a guardian angels. And then across
- 52:52Speaker 3: the hall from that room is our Buelo room, our
- 52:54Speaker 3: Grandpa room, so it has like Grandpa Coots, railroad things,
- 52:59Speaker 3: Grandpa military, Zaid's grandpa, you know, farm kind of stuff. Wow,
- 53:06Speaker 3: So we've got even though a lot of those relatives
- 53:09Speaker 3: aren't here like we have them here. I have paintings
- 53:12Speaker 3: that you gave me at ray on the wall, things
- 53:15Speaker 3: that mom and dad have given us, presents from other friends,
- 53:20Speaker 3: or just something that reminds us of someone else, because
- 53:22Speaker 3: people often are like, it's you two and you guys,
- 53:25Speaker 3: you know, just you guys live there, and we're like, well,
- 53:28Speaker 3: us and Joelene, who's right behind me on this, yes,
- 53:31Speaker 3: I see, but it's like, well, no, it's it feels
- 53:36Speaker 3: full and like we've always thought that this would be
- 53:39Speaker 3: somewhere that like everyone can come, like we've been busy remodeling,
- 53:43Speaker 3: but we want now just two people come to this
- 53:47Speaker 3: and spend time and there's so much to do here
- 53:51Speaker 3: that and the town. Like when we moved here, I
- 53:54Speaker 3: should tell you this, we thought we were going to
- 53:57Speaker 3: move into this little sleepy village, quietly stay in our
- 54:01Speaker 3: mansion and just kind of hide away from the world.
- 54:05Speaker 3: And when we bought it, we did a little video
- 54:09Speaker 3: only for our immediate friends and family on Facebook where
- 54:13Speaker 3: we did we shared a little kiss and I said
- 54:16Speaker 3: we bought a mansion and we had become friends with
- 54:20Speaker 3: Missy and Robbie, and Missy shared it on her Facebook
- 54:24Speaker 3: and then from there it got how many times did
- 54:27Speaker 3: it get shared? In fake our cute little town we
- 54:30Speaker 3: live in, so it like a lot like Facebook is
- 54:34Speaker 3: like the news outlet, you know, the social everything, And
- 54:39Speaker 3: it got it was shared like maybe sixty times, and
- 54:42Speaker 3: so everyone within like twenty four hours knew exactly who
- 54:47Speaker 3: we were. We gained all these you know, Instagram followers
- 54:51Speaker 3: and new Facebook friends, and we're like, we thought we
- 54:54Speaker 3: were going to hide away in this little tiny town
- 54:56Speaker 3: because we're homebodies. So we're like, if you're going to
- 54:59Speaker 3: be a homebody, this is the place to do it.
- 55:02Speaker 3: But everybody started reaching out and people would pop by
- 55:06Speaker 3: and everyone was so nice. And because we when we
- 55:10Speaker 3: first there was a few things that were scaring people,
- 55:13Speaker 3: I think from purchasing at the front porch was actually
- 55:15Speaker 3: falling down, and we got a bid and it was
- 55:20Speaker 3: fifty thousand dollars for it because it has the big
- 55:23Speaker 3: columns and a big porch. And I told say, I'm like,
- 55:26Speaker 3: I bet we could do it. And even my dad,
- 55:29Speaker 3: who has the utmost trust in me, He's like, I
- 55:31Speaker 3: don't know, guys, And I'm like, well, no, I think
- 55:33Speaker 3: if I get a carjack, I can jack up the roof.
- 55:37Speaker 3: We can swap out these columns. We convince Site's cousin
- 55:41Speaker 3: Tony to come out with us. Soziety and Tony were
- 55:43Speaker 3: on nail guns. We pulled everything off. It was in
- 55:46Speaker 3: the middle of August. We were sweating through our clothes,
- 55:50Speaker 3: living only on popsicles and water, and we pulled the
- 55:56Speaker 3: old porch completely down. We completely rebuilt the on porch
- 56:00Speaker 3: and like our inboxes on Facebook were just flooded with
- 56:03Speaker 3: the porch is beautiful. We love it. A lot of
- 56:06Speaker 3: these people at the time, we didn't even know who
- 56:07Speaker 3: they were, but they were all watching and they're like,
- 56:10Speaker 3: the porch looks so good. It looks so good, And
- 56:13Speaker 3: that was one of the things I think that had
- 56:15Speaker 3: scared a lot of people. And I mean it was
- 56:17Speaker 3: to the point where if we didn't fix it immediately,
- 56:20Speaker 3: it was going to fall down. And then the home
- 56:22Speaker 3: has box gutters, which are beautiful. The gutters are built
- 56:25Speaker 3: into the home, but the rubber linings had peeled back
- 56:30Speaker 3: and so the gutters were holding the water to let
- 56:32Speaker 3: the water come into the house like into the water.
- 56:36Speaker 3: And we had to rent lifts. We've rented so many
- 56:39Speaker 3: commercial lifts that, like I told Zidem like, we should
- 56:42Speaker 3: have just bought one, But because the house is so tall,
- 56:46Speaker 3: ladders can't go up there. And then we've got a
- 56:48Speaker 3: big addition on the back that you've got to go
- 56:51Speaker 3: up and over the addition to get to the house.
- 56:53Speaker 3: So in a matter of like three months, I think
- 56:56Speaker 3: we had all of the structural things taken care of.
- 57:01Speaker 3: But there were nights in the beginning. We have a
- 57:03Speaker 3: sunroom that we had. A hurricane skirted Kentucky didn't even
- 57:09Speaker 3: hit us, but our sun room was leaking water like
- 57:15Speaker 3: a drownding submarine. It was horrible. We had all of
- 57:19Speaker 3: these like in the movies, all the pots and pans,
- 57:21Speaker 3: we had tupperware everywhere, and I remember I told Zaid,
- 57:25Speaker 3: what have we done? It was the beautiful wood ceiling.
- 57:28Speaker 3: The water was just coming through like and we had
- 57:31Speaker 3: we had this china cabinet, long story short, that we
- 57:35Speaker 3: got from a billionaire. The water was dripping on the
- 57:40Speaker 3: china cabinet and that was one of the cry in
- 57:43Speaker 3: a puddle times we've had. We've had a lot of those,
- 57:47Speaker 3: because like a house this old, in this grand there's
- 57:50Speaker 3: so many problems, and there's some problems that you don't
- 57:52Speaker 3: even see because it'll be in a room that you
- 57:55Speaker 3: rarely go in, but it's worth it. I think we're
- 57:59Speaker 3: very much such busybodies, so we love We kind of
- 58:05Speaker 3: like the challenge and making it ours. But our town
- 58:08Speaker 3: has been We actually feel more welcome here than in Utah.
- 58:14Speaker 3: Like there's people in this for being a little town.
- 58:18Speaker 3: They're more gay friendly, they're more you know democratic there.
- 58:25Speaker 3: You know, their beliefs are more genuine. People in the South.
- 58:29Speaker 3: It's they're kind and Southern charms. They're charming and all
- 58:35Speaker 3: of that stuff because they want to be where. We
- 58:39Speaker 3: felt a lot of it, like they felt like they
- 58:42Speaker 3: had to be, which you can feel that if someone's genuinely,
- 58:46Speaker 3: you know, loves you. Jonie brought us her pickled jalapinos
- 58:50Speaker 3: that were so good. She brought us more. And our
- 58:53Speaker 3: neighbor Donald brings us. He'll throw king sized candy bars
- 58:56Speaker 3: over the fence to us and it is super sweet.
- 58:59Speaker 3: Brought us plates of food on holidays and amazing people.
- 59:04Speaker 2: Yeah, such a beautiful it's like a community. It's just
- 59:08Speaker 2: a really beautiful community.
- 59:09Speaker 1: It's great welcome doing.
- 59:10Speaker 3: That, it is for sure. And we've had parties at
- 59:14Speaker 3: the house where people every and what's weird is everyone's
- 59:17Speaker 3: been in our home for somebody's wedding, for somebody's graduation, photos,
- 59:22Speaker 3: for you know, some sort of event. And the lady,
- 59:26Speaker 3: missus Farrell had with something like forty grandkids, but then
- 59:30Speaker 3: she had one hundred and twenty great grandkids and even
- 59:35Speaker 3: in her time she started having her double grades, so
- 59:38Speaker 3: like the whole town was related to her.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Yeah, if she lived till almost one hundred and five,
- 59:46Speaker 2: that's very amazing.
- 59:47Speaker 3: People will come to the house, they know the house
- 59:50Speaker 3: and they're like, oh my gosh, you did this or
- 59:52Speaker 3: you did this, and it's been fun to give them
- 59:57Speaker 3: tours inside a home they know, but show it to them.
- 1:00:01Speaker 3: Yeah all over again.
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: I love now that people love it.
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I feel Yeah, like Robbie said, we never knew
- 1:00:09Speaker 3: it could look like this.
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: So as we wrap up here, I know we've talked
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: about a lot of things, But if there's anything that
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: you want to add or a piece of advice that
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: you want to give the listeners about this journey that
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: you've had, what would that be.
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: I truly think just do it. There's so many things
- 1:00:29Speaker 3: that I have high anxiety and OCD, all these crazy
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: things that I want everything to be perfect. But in
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: looking back, I think just jumping off the cliff was
- 1:00:41Speaker 3: the best thing that we could have done. There's been
- 1:00:44Speaker 3: so many things in my life that like, whether it's
- 1:00:47Speaker 3: you know, publishing cookbooks or a novel, and people say, oh,
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: I've always wanted to do that, Like I tell them,
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: I'm like, do it. Like there's you have a friend
- 1:00:57Speaker 3: in your life or family that I've done it, I
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: can help you. Don't think about it. And with the
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: house too, so many people have said that's my dream
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: to restore an old mansion. I'm like, well, us too,
- 1:01:08Speaker 3: So we did it. I just want people to it's scary.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: We moved across the world to somewhere we don't know,
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: to a town with you know, we've now met friends,
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: but it's we were scared. There were nights that I thought,
- 1:01:22Speaker 3: did we do the right thing? Like is Zaid want
- 1:01:25Speaker 3: to kill me? I moved him away from his family,
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: I moved him from mine. But I think looking back,
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: we can both say that just doing it and kind
- 1:01:35Speaker 3: of like we had to be creative on finances. We
- 1:01:38Speaker 3: had to you know, there was a lot of things
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: we had to jump through. Nothing about it was easy,
- 1:01:45Speaker 3: but we did it and we're happy. There's this quote
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: from Amelia Earhart that's the most difficult thing is the
- 1:01:53Speaker 3: decision to act, and the rest is merely tenacity. Like
- 1:01:58Speaker 3: we have tenacity. It was just that, uh, you know,
- 1:02:01Speaker 3: pulling the trigger. And then there's another quote I love.
- 1:02:06Speaker 3: The German writer Gute said whatever you can do or dream,
- 1:02:11Speaker 3: you can just begin it. So it's, you know, same
- 1:02:15Speaker 3: as Amelia, just act on it, begin it that advice. Yeah,
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: because nothing's gonna be despite all my stressing and anxiety
- 1:02:26Speaker 3: and worrying. It can't be perfect. So it's you know,
- 1:02:29Speaker 3: take those first steps and the rest will fall into place.
- 1:02:34Speaker 3: Anzaieed even more so than me, is jump in, let's
- 1:02:38Speaker 3: do it. He never pumps the brakes. I've never had
- 1:02:41Speaker 3: someone in my life that was so encouraging and let's
- 1:02:45Speaker 3: do it. He's a huge driving factor. He came to
- 1:02:49Speaker 3: this country for a better life, so I'll be damned
- 1:02:52Speaker 3: if he's gonna sit on the sidelines.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yes, I said him. We can't do it.
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: We can't do anything because we were remote house and
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: we learn more and learn and learn. And I was
- 1:03:09Speaker 4: talking with him and say, oh, for the next house
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: I know how I can do that.
- 1:03:17Speaker 3: Like let's pump the brakes on the next house. But
- 1:03:19Speaker 3: you're right, you just do it well.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: And I love Yeah, I love that neither one of
- 1:03:26Speaker 2: you are afraid of the hard work. And like you said, Zeid,
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: it's just it's an expression of love of loving the
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: house and loving doing it together. I love that.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: It's the best part together.
- 1:03:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:42Speaker 3: Yes. Sometimes I come down to the kitchen and i
- 1:03:45Speaker 3: hear Zeid whispering and I'm like, who are you talking to?
- 1:03:49Speaker 3: I'm like, is it the the ghosts or for yourself?
- 1:03:55Speaker 3: So I think you always always. The house is kind
- 1:03:59Speaker 3: of like one of the main characters of our life,
- 1:04:02Speaker 3: Like it feels like it is alive. So it's the
- 1:04:04Speaker 3: house Mezi and joelne living happy together.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: I love that. Perfect. Oh, I love that. So Nate,
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: I have to ask you, because all this renovation of
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: this house, this house is like somewhat, you know, just
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: a mirror of the house that you had in your novel.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: So is it did you just you know, how did
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: that all come together? Because it feels like the timing
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: is very similar and serendipitous in terms of all the
- 1:04:36Speaker 2: creative energy that you had both writing a book that
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: has you know, this, this mansion in it, and now
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: renovating a mansion.
- 1:04:47Speaker 3: Yeah, it's I think that I began this novel when
- 1:04:51Speaker 3: I was only seventeen years old, this kid obsessed with
- 1:04:55Speaker 3: historic architecture. But I wrote the book for twenty someth
- 1:05:00Speaker 3: the years, finally published it in May, and then the
- 1:05:04Speaker 3: following month we flew out and first saw the mansion
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: for the first time. And I think a lot of
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: that is you can call it putting it into the
- 1:05:15Speaker 3: universe or prayer. But I had written what I wanted
- 1:05:20Speaker 3: and brought it into fruition on so many aspects of
- 1:05:23Speaker 3: my life in meeting Zaid. Like Zaid was a main
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: character in the book, and the book was completed when
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: before we were even engaged. But like it talks about Zayid,
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: it talks about this house. The books called Beneath the
- 1:05:39Speaker 3: Ashes of the Balance of State, and a couple people,
- 1:05:43Speaker 3: our friend David him and his husband Ed, bought the
- 1:05:46Speaker 3: book and when he read it the first time he
- 1:05:49Speaker 3: came to the house, he goes, this is your book,
- 1:05:51Speaker 3: and like we just started laughing. We're like, yeah, it
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: wasn't like you know it is, You're right, but it
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: was written long before we had ever come here. But
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: the home has this grand library, which we did build.
- 1:06:05Speaker 3: The house didn't have the library initially, but so many
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: of the things, the huge chandelier in the grand salon,
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: the ballroom, the so much of it, and just the
- 1:06:17Speaker 3: emotions of the house, in the house being such a
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: main character in our lives and in the book. The
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: book was named after the house, and it was just
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: it's been fun to live through words that I wrote
- 1:06:33Speaker 3: is fiction that have since become both our reality.
- 1:06:38Speaker 4: Yeah, well that's super cool. It's a big conversation. How
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: wasn't they the library talking about night And I told
- 1:06:50Speaker 4: him I can if you help me, maybe we can
- 1:06:55Speaker 4: build a library with a lot of it. I never
- 1:06:58Speaker 4: I said before, but I thing, we can do it.
- 1:07:01Speaker 2: That is so cool And you did it and you
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: did it.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: Yeah, And I wrote the book about chandelaire, candelabras, the
- 1:07:11Speaker 4: grand salon. Wow, this is the house in the book
- 1:07:16Speaker 4: I live.
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, And one sweet thing about the library is
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: the two characters in the book Durayden gives Landon a
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: library and in that Zaid knew that and he's like,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: you've published I have the look great Naked series, my
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: children's book, the novel. Now I've published a few authors
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: under pen names, and just sites like I want to
- 1:07:44Speaker 3: give you the library. So there were things we needed
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: to do before. But he's like, what do you want?
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: And I'm like, I want the shelves to, you know,
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: go fourteen feet up the ceiling. I want. It's hard
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: to show you, but there's the whole thing is lit.
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: We have these huge candelabras that are from Dubai and
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: we were in some antique store clear up in Lexington
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: and she's like, where are you going to put these?
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: And we're like, oh, our home, And through a little
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: conversation she's like, don't tell me you guys bought the
- 1:08:12Speaker 3: Guardian mansion, Like oh, we did, and they're going in
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: the library. Wow. But the library was like a big
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: gift from Zeid, Like there's so many moldings and shelves
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: and like it looks like it was always here, Like
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: it doesn't look added. It looks like Abraham Lincoln could
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: have pulled a book off the shelf.
- 1:08:34Speaker 2: Wow, that's so cool.
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: So it was Zeide's gift of love to me. He
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: made me helping. But there were so many nights that
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: zeid on the ceiling was hand daintings and varnishing it
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: and like he was like Michelangelo. He was on scaffolding,
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: his head bent back all the way, his arm dead
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: and numb, and he he did all of it.
- 1:08:58Speaker 2: I love that site. I love that's that's like so tender,
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: that's beautiful.
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: We always ask people, were like, what's your favorite room,
- 1:09:07Speaker 3: Like Dad's favorite rooms would change as we would remodel
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: and whenever. Then people ask the question back, I'm like, well,
- 1:09:14Speaker 3: mine's the library for just you know what it symbolizes.
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: The library is one of the few rooms that is
- 1:09:21Speaker 3: better now than it ever was before because so much
- 1:09:24Speaker 3: of our work is restoration and putting it back to
- 1:09:27Speaker 3: how it was. But this room now is better than
- 1:09:31Speaker 3: it ever was. It had this fireplace that had been
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: painted five or six times, and we stripped it with
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: toothbrushes weeks and week, probably months, just to get it
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: back to the original tiger oak. To then see it
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: and just you know, lots of little things, but well.
- 1:09:51Speaker 2: And it's an expression. It sounds like the library is
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: the greatest expression of the two of you together. So
- 1:09:57Speaker 2: it's a beautiful addition to the house.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Oh, it is for sure. Wow, we've since finishing it.
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: Where we met, we'd probably spent a total of an
- 1:10:08Speaker 3: hour in here the first year we lived here. But
- 1:10:11Speaker 3: now it's it's kind of the heart of the house
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: because it's a room nearer the kitchen, because we'd been
- 1:10:16Speaker 3: the ballroom we had as our TV room. But that's
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: an eighty four stare round trip to get a stack.
- 1:10:25Speaker 3: The library is right next door, is much much closer.
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: John, that's awesome.
- 1:10:32Speaker 3: We've had to put a refrigerator in a microwave on
- 1:10:35Speaker 3: the third floor because for our ice cream, we hated
- 1:10:38Speaker 3: going down to get the ice cream and then even
- 1:10:40Speaker 3: worse bringing it back before it melted mid movie. So
- 1:10:44Speaker 3: we found we found some workarounds.
- 1:10:48Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 1:10:48Speaker 3: That's great.
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: Well, I have a suggestion. I think Scott and I
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: Ney to come on a road trip and we'll we'll
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: do part two.
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: Of podcast driving to Kentucky.
- 1:11:00Speaker 2: No, we can fly, but we we will do part
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: two of this. Yes, we'll do part two of this
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: podcast actually there at the mansion. So let's put that
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: as a as a teaser for what's to come later
- 1:11:17Speaker 2: this year, in the in the coming months.
- 1:11:21Speaker 3: Yeah, we would love that that would be awesome.
- 1:11:25Speaker 4: It's the best part as when you are in the
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: house you don't you don't feel how big it is.
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: That when you are outside on the jar, you can
- 1:11:36Speaker 4: see how big it is. I don't know why.
- 1:11:41Speaker 3: No photo can, no photo can give you an idea
- 1:11:45Speaker 3: of the scale unless you're here. There was a silly
- 1:11:48Speaker 3: it was not this Christmas but last Zaid and Mom
- 1:11:52Speaker 3: were standing there with hot cocoa in the front door
- 1:11:54Speaker 3: and they were half the size of the front door,
- 1:11:57Speaker 3: and people were like, did you photo shop that? They
- 1:12:00Speaker 3: Christmas elves.
- 1:12:01Speaker 2: And it's just the size of the door.
- 1:12:05Speaker 3: That's cool. Wow, it's been fun. But yeah, you guys
- 1:12:08Speaker 3: should come.
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: We will. We'll make that a road trip this year,
- 1:12:13Speaker 2: a plane trip, plane trip. Please, so well, thank you
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: so much for doing this, Nate Ansie. This this is
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: something that I've really wanted to talk about because I
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: just love the energy of, like I said, the work
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: that you've done, the life that you've breathed back into
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: this beautiful home, and the fact that everyone in that
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: community loves it like you are. You are restoring a
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: community for sure.
- 1:12:40Speaker 3: Oh yeah, we for sure we feel it.
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: Yeah, So kudos to you. More if more of that
- 1:12:47Speaker 2: could be done would be a very different place right
- 1:12:50Speaker 2: now in all sorts of communities. So kudos for leading
- 1:12:55Speaker 2: the way.
- 1:12:56Speaker 3: Well, thank you. It's definitely been a fun advance. I
- 1:13:00Speaker 3: ensure that we kind of jumped off the cliff and
- 1:13:03Speaker 3: figured it all out later. We never thought it would happen.
- 1:13:06Speaker 3: So it just still feels surreal to be sitting here
- 1:13:10Speaker 3: telling you guys about it's still.
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Well, it's amazing, and it's amazing how much you've done
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: and really a pretty short period of time to bring
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: it to where it is. It's just amazing.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: And I love that because you didn't feel that it
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: could be done that now you have that feeling of
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: we can do anything, because I think that's where I
- 1:13:31Speaker 2: think that's where we meet ourselves, is when we stop
- 1:13:35Speaker 2: thinking and living our lives through like all of these
- 1:13:39Speaker 2: biases and conditioned thoughts that says, oh, I can't do
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: this until I do this and this, and I'm I
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: am critical of myself that way. Oh I can't do
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: this until I do this and this and this and this.
- 1:13:51Speaker 2: But you've done it.
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: Just do it.
- 1:13:52Speaker 2: You just did it. You just took an airplane ride,
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: bought a house and filled it with love and that's amazing.
- 1:14:01Speaker 2: That's just absolutely amazing.
- 1:14:05Speaker 3: It wasn't without some sacrifices though. We missed our family
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: and my mom tells me all the time, like, don't
- 1:14:11Speaker 3: you guys want to be closer, And of course we do,
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: but it's like we're we're living a dream. Like when
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: we're leaving Utah, the friends are like, well, just come back,
- 1:14:20Speaker 3: just come back and or move back, and part of
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: it's like if you guys only knew what you were
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: asking us to leave, Like, yeah, we love our community.
- 1:14:30Speaker 3: We're obsessed with our house like it's kind of and
- 1:14:34Speaker 3: it's ours because the bountiful house I had, you know before,
