- 35:53Speaker 9: How are you Rama doing great?
- 35:55Speaker 25: Dammy?
- 35:55Speaker 38: How are you?
- 35:56Speaker 5: I'm good?
- 35:57Speaker 30: My man?
- 35:58Speaker 9: What a show?
- 35:59Speaker 8: Thank you very much much for that hour right before
- 36:01Speaker 8: us here and Russian what an amazing individual.
- 36:05Speaker 9: First of all, to be a doctor on cologist.
- 36:08Speaker 8: And then to be pulling off what he's doing as
- 36:10Speaker 8: a filmmaker and an author is incredible.
- 36:12Speaker 9: I mean, what was that like? How is that like?
- 36:14Speaker 9: Talking to him?
- 36:16Speaker 38: Well, it's always fun knowing that your guest is so
- 36:20Speaker 38: much smarter than all three hosts put together. We were
- 36:24Speaker 38: all dumbfounded speaking to him because Mona and I are
- 36:29Speaker 38: looking for a joke. Ukshay is endlessly fascinated. But then
- 36:33Speaker 38: he's Russian telling us about his m CAT scores and
- 36:37Speaker 38: how high they are, and that even while being a
- 36:40Speaker 38: successful director and now novelist, he still does nine weeks.
- 36:45Speaker 38: That is a practicing physician in Boston, so he has
- 36:49Speaker 38: a caseload. He's still very much up to date, very
- 36:53Speaker 38: part of the medical system and taking care of people
- 36:56Speaker 38: and saving their lives through medicine. But all so in
- 37:01Speaker 38: a way, saving people's lives through his art by doing
- 37:04Speaker 38: representations of communities that often.
- 37:07Speaker 7: Are marginalized, through his own personal experience.
- 37:10Speaker 38: Being gay, being the director of A Nice Indian Boy,
- 37:15Speaker 38: which starts his.
- 37:16Speaker 7: Partner the Great Coutain.
- 37:17Speaker 38: Sony and Gross, which is an amazing rom com. Regardless
- 37:22Speaker 38: of how you identify. It's one of the best movies
- 37:25Speaker 38: I had seen in the last ten years. And if
- 37:29Speaker 38: you don't find yourself kying by the end, I just
- 37:31Speaker 38: don't think you have a heart. But we had the
- 37:35Speaker 38: privilege of getting to talk to him as he's doing
- 37:38Speaker 38: a press tour for his new novel, The Stimp, which
- 37:42Speaker 38: is a kind of an update of will you make
- 37:46Speaker 38: these sackery vanity fair? Or share? That same lineage of
- 37:50Speaker 38: it of a young Indian man in Hollywood lying his
- 37:55Speaker 38: way into a situation of working, or this famous Hollywood couple,
- 38:02Speaker 38: and the wise that we tell ourselves to fit into
- 38:06Speaker 38: different communities, how we shrink ourselves to fit into spaces
- 38:10Speaker 38: we want to be a part of.
- 38:12Speaker 7: And it is a book without a hero, and that
- 38:15Speaker 7: is actually part of the title.
- 38:17Speaker 38: Novel without a hero, because he's not an aspirational character, right,
- 38:21Speaker 38: He's not.
- 38:24Speaker 7: In the way that Groschen. You look at him.
- 38:25Speaker 38: Professionally, say wow, here's a guy who can not only
- 38:29Speaker 38: be a very smart, well learned, talented professional and a doctor,
- 38:35Speaker 38: but now he's also been a medical consultant on television shows.
- 38:39Speaker 38: He's been a writer, he's been a director, and he's
- 38:42Speaker 38: out there doing so much. You look at him and go, hey,
- 38:47Speaker 38: that's something career wise to aspire to of really knowing that, yeah,
- 38:52Speaker 38: we can do it all, because there are those among
- 38:56Speaker 38: us who have done it all to the degree that
- 38:58Speaker 38: they can. And his character smallly shares similarities to all
- 39:04Speaker 38: of us and Russian's personal experience. He's not an aspirational character.
- 39:08Speaker 38: Nobody wants to be like him, right.
- 39:11Speaker 7: Right, It'd be too painful. And also it's just so complicated.
- 39:16Speaker 38: But it's an amazingly rewarding novel that everyone should pick up.
- 39:20Speaker 7: The simp by Rosane.
- 39:22Speaker 9: Yeah, it's incredible. I'm looking at it right now as
- 39:24Speaker 9: I'm talking to you.
- 39:25Speaker 8: This is remarkable, a novel without a hero, which kind
- 39:30Speaker 8: of speaks and echoes to your point of the character
- 39:34Speaker 8: in the book not necessarily being some aspirational figure, but
- 39:37Speaker 8: rather someone that is sharing his story there. And I
- 39:39Speaker 8: think when you look at an individual like Russian and
- 39:45Speaker 8: just the breadth of work that he's done, and then
- 39:47Speaker 8: you have this film that I was familiar with, which
- 39:50Speaker 8: is a nice Indian boy, and tell us about that
- 39:53Speaker 8: and did he touch on that experience of being involved
- 39:56Speaker 8: in that film and as a director, and did he
- 39:59Speaker 8: share his experience of going through that and the irony
- 40:02Speaker 8: of course the title, and his personal circumstances there.
- 40:06Speaker 38: Yeah, he talked extensively about the process of making A
- 40:10Speaker 38: Nice Indian Boy, with the finding financing, Jonathan Gross really
- 40:16Speaker 38: being the engine that got them there, financing because you
- 40:19Speaker 38: have the Tony Award winner who is in Hamilton and
- 40:22Speaker 38: mind Hunter and all of these big projects that people
- 40:25Speaker 38: know about. In order to get this movie really made
- 40:29Speaker 38: and distributed. It was through the reputation of Jonathan Gross,
- 40:33Speaker 38: the prominent white coat to heart in it, and that
- 40:39Speaker 38: they were able to make this movie that was adored
- 40:43Speaker 38: critically and by all who had seen it, but still
- 40:46Speaker 38: has difficulty being seen getting the kind of distribution that
- 40:51Speaker 38: a lot of movies that have big name stars in
- 40:55Speaker 38: it that are of lesser quality. Yeah, can play three
- 40:58Speaker 38: thousand screens, do no business.
- 41:00Speaker 7: But has seriously, we'll tract on their career or their
- 41:03Speaker 7: box office.
- 41:06Speaker 38: You mentioned some specifically like Collen Turner, Sydney Sweeney, people
- 41:10Speaker 38: like that, who can take these who can make these
- 41:12Speaker 38: movies that aren't successful, but it doesn't really push the
- 41:16Speaker 38: needle back on their career. Just here's something that happened,
- 41:19Speaker 38: and now we're onto the next movie, where with this
- 41:24Speaker 38: they'll say it's a story we're not interested in, or
- 41:27Speaker 38: they're not willing to take a chance on it, primarily
- 41:30Speaker 38: because it's an all it's a primarily Indian cast, or
- 41:35Speaker 38: saying that there isn't a market for it. So we
- 41:37Speaker 38: touch on a lot of things, especially the fact that
- 41:39Speaker 38: our community collectively globally but especially.
- 41:42Speaker 7: Here in the US, needs to do a better job
- 41:45Speaker 7: of showing up to support projects that our community make.
- 41:51Speaker 38: An example like Deli Voice critically adored, people really love
- 41:55Speaker 38: the show, have friends on the show, and it just got.
- 41:59Speaker 9: Cancel Chencel, what a disaster. So sad?
- 42:02Speaker 38: Yeah, and are There are a lot of things that
- 42:05Speaker 38: go into that, And that was one of the projects
- 42:07Speaker 38: that most of are a large amount of our community
- 42:10Speaker 38: showed up for. But then you think about other movies
- 42:13Speaker 38: like India, Sweeps and Spices polite society blinded by the
- 42:17Speaker 38: light of these movies that didn't have the biggest budgets
- 42:21Speaker 38: but did have a box office release, and our community
- 42:26Speaker 38: didn't show up as much as they should. And I
- 42:29Speaker 38: could talk to people outside of Los Angeles to New
- 42:31Speaker 38: York and ask, hey, did you go see this? Did
- 42:33Speaker 38: you even hear about it, and they don't hear about it. Well,
- 42:37Speaker 38: we have the energy to show up to big, big
- 42:39Speaker 38: ticket Bollywood movies to be a part of that conversation.
- 42:42Speaker 38: What we're leaving behind is the stories that we're telling
- 42:46Speaker 38: here or in Canada or in the UK, and we're
- 42:50Speaker 38: not supporting them with the same energy. We're not showing
- 42:53Speaker 38: up on streaming and watching them with that same energy
- 42:56Speaker 38: that we should. We're not showing up to the box office.
- 42:58Speaker 38: We're not telling people much. But at the same time
- 43:01Speaker 38: we're rattling our tain saying we want to be seen.
- 43:05Speaker 7: Give us a chance, give us an opportunity.
- 43:07Speaker 38: And while that is important, we should be demanding more
- 43:11Speaker 38: or requesting more and just making our art, making good
- 43:14Speaker 38: art that anybody, regardless of the community, can resonate with
- 43:18Speaker 38: and experience. If we collectively as a Bacy community don't
- 43:23Speaker 38: show up to support our own, then how mad can
- 43:27Speaker 38: we be at anybody else.
- 43:28Speaker 7: Showing up to support us? And that's the thing that
- 43:30Speaker 7: we see.
- 43:30Speaker 38: Everybody wants to be on the red carpet and take
- 43:32Speaker 38: the photos and meet the people, but are you actually
- 43:36Speaker 38: watching it? Are you kicking around and are you taking
- 43:39Speaker 38: chances on things that you don't necessarily know are for you,
- 43:43Speaker 38: because ultimately, A Nice Indian Boy is just a beautiful
- 43:46Speaker 38: romantic comedy. It is a really funny, really sweet, really
- 43:50Speaker 38: heart felt movie. And yes it's a queer love story,
- 43:54Speaker 38: but that is part of it. But that shouldn't be
- 43:58Speaker 38: the reason you don't watch it. You should open your
- 44:02Speaker 38: mind and your horizon and just connect with good art
- 44:05Speaker 38: because it is And that is something that Roussan said.
- 44:07Speaker 38: He doesn't want you to watch his movie or read
- 44:10Speaker 38: his book because of a performative desire to support the community.
- 44:14Speaker 7: He wants you to engage with it because it's good
- 44:17Speaker 7: and judge it on his own merit.
- 44:18Speaker 38: And both of them are incredible pieces of work. So
- 44:22Speaker 38: I hope that after people have listened to our interview
- 44:26Speaker 38: with him, that they seek these out. They go and
- 44:29Speaker 38: watch Knights Indian Boy, They read the STEMP, and they
- 44:32Speaker 38: engage with this and then become even more inquisitive and
- 44:35Speaker 38: go and watch more things and engage with more things.
- 44:38Speaker 9: Yeah, Rama, this is awesome.
- 44:40Speaker 8: Well, if you missed it this morning, folks, you can
