- 0:39SPEAKER_04: Welcome in, everybody, to the Telican Tech podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_04: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:44SPEAKER_04: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:47SPEAKER_04: Tristan, the 4-0, Texas Tech Red Raiders.
- 0:51SPEAKER_01: Steven, you should have let me start the intro.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Like our boy Mac Leftwich starts Tommy Castellanos, all right.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, stop.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: I like how it's saying it like it was a Hispanic name, Castellanos.
- 1:04SPEAKER_04: Way to go.
- 1:05SPEAKER_04: Way to go, guy.
- 1:08SPEAKER_04: I think it's a Spanish twist on it.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: That's what this podcast needs.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: It needs a shakeup at the starting position to throw off the other team, aka the treasured listeners.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: That's what that's what that's what this podcast needs.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: That's the juice that the spark that this this whole organization deserves.
- 1:29SPEAKER_01: And I don't care if it goes out three and out every time.
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: Alright?
- 1:32SPEAKER_01: I don't care.
- 1:33SPEAKER_01: That's how it happens predictably every time.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: But that's what we need to do now.
- 1:38SPEAKER_04: I I can't even go along with your meme right now because it pisses me off.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Did you did you curse at your phone?
- 1:45SPEAKER_04: I did.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: You did?
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: I did.
- 1:47SPEAKER_01: In the airport in Columbus, Ohio.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I will.
- 1:50SPEAKER_04: I'll continue to curse when I see number four step on the field.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: But unfortunately, he threw a dot at the end of the game, and so now he's probably gonna play half of the game against Colorado.
- 2:00SPEAKER_04: So now he's the goat.
- 2:01SPEAKER_04: So now he's the goat in Mac Lefwich's eyes and Joey McGuire's eyes, who for some reason continues to say, yeah, we're gonna have a few more packages for Tommy out here because we want our fans to hate us and we want our football team to not be as good and throw off Will Hammond.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Let's let's put a quick pin this.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: I don't want to leave this, but Steven, I mean, we gotta play the song.
- 2:25SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 2:26SPEAKER_04: Let's start them off with a sound note.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: We're four and up and we won by five touchdowns.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: I think we're gonna have to play the song.
- 2:31SPEAKER_04: Play the song.
- 2:53SPEAKER_04: The song did deserve to be played because Texas Tech won by five touchdowns.
- 2:59SPEAKER_04: Uh, and covered, by the way, against the same.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: We're no longer the most overrated team, according to Tom Fernelli, in the country, dude, because we have now covered.
- 3:07unknown: Wow.
- 3:08SPEAKER_01: Which I don't know what kind of metric that is.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, basically.
- 3:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and I don't know if if that translates to any sort of real-world situation, but no.
- 3:23SPEAKER_04: Um not a great first half.
- 3:26SPEAKER_04: Much better second half.
- 3:29SPEAKER_04: But yeah, I mean, I like okay, I wanted to start like this.
- 3:33SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech outlook through four games.
- 3:36SPEAKER_04: Now that we've completed the non-conference, we've played one conference game.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: Uh, I think you're fooling yourself if you think you have Texas Tech figured out.
- 3:44SPEAKER_04: I have no idea if this team is gonna win eight games or if this team is gonna win 12 games.
- 3:49SPEAKER_04: I have no idea.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: I think the good news is we I lean towards the 12.
- 3:53unknown: Okay.
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Because we seem to be a good one.
- 3:55SPEAKER_04: Where's your thought process there?
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Alright, so we like you said, dude, can you believe this that we're a third into the season?
- 4:01SPEAKER_01: Kind of it's kind of a bummer.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: You know, it feels like it just started.
- 4:05SPEAKER_04: There's a lot of good football ahead, guy.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, for sure.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Like it's just the beginning, you know, with all the out of conferences wrapping up, unless you're no, wait, even in the SEC, do they even have that November cupcake anymore?
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I think they do.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: Anyway, um so so yeah, you're you're a third in.
- 4:22SPEAKER_01: And you have really no idea offensively, especially what this team is and what the motto is, what the scheme is, what the mentality is.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: Like, it's really all over the place.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Like it ex We open this plot up, talk about the quarterback situation, about this gimmicky starting the backup to do God knows what, I guess, just to see you know have him do his few plays that he's been practicing over and over again in practice.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: And guess what?
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: It hasn't worked.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: But Tristan, but Tristan, they work in practice.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: So they work in practice.
- 4:57SPEAKER_04: I I mean you gotta do it, right?
- 4:59SPEAKER_04: You gotta keep playing him because duh.
- 5:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, you know, it in fairness, if you if if he could do that against your defense and say, like in a like a in a scrimmage situation, I guess you could assume that he could do it against Sam Houston State, but he could not.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so you know, well back back to the whole starding camp situation and before we played the damn song.
- 5:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I was gonna ask you, is this just a Mac being a terrorist thing, or is Joey letting this happen?
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Is he like watching this playbook disaster unwind in front of his face?
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Is he culpable on this?
- 5:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, Joey, Joey stood by Mac and as he should.
- 5:40SPEAKER_04: You're you're trying to keep the chemistry together, and you can test out some things in these games against Sam Houston State.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: You know, I do look at the Houston game and I say, okay, you know, they they threw out the Castellanos bull crap at the beginning of the game, but outside of that, they didn't throw him back in until you know they had a red zone package and whatever.
- 5:59SPEAKER_04: Um, and I think a lot with this team that you'll see is we're playing a lot of guys right now.
- 6:06SPEAKER_04: The roster will the the playtime, the amount of snaps, all of that will reduce as we start to get into Big 12 play, as it naturally does.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: And with teams like Sammy and State, you can try some things, you know, and you can get several players involved.
- 6:22SPEAKER_04: I you can think of it two different ways.
- 6:24SPEAKER_04: You can think of it as we don't have our offense figured out yet, and we're trying to figure it out, or we are trying different things against a bad team because we can.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: So I tend to think against Sam Houston that we're leaning more towards the second thing, uh, we're just trying some stuff, but they they still continue to play a lot of these players that don't seem to be getting it on Texas Tech's roster.
- 6:54SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah, so they're they're trying new things.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Completely understandable.
- 6:57SPEAKER_01: It's you know, San Houston State is a buy game, you know, B U Y game.
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: So I understand that you're they're kind of your test dummy to work things on.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: Um, but I get that argument.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: On the same foot, why would you not say that stuff until after the blowout is finished?
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Like, why do you not start your QB1 like you would in any hopefully normal situation?
- 7:24SPEAKER_01: Though I know Houston's guys questioning what normal is.
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: So it's it to me that baffles me.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: I guess you can make the argument of, oh well, whenever it's a blowout, the other team is already like lost in their minds too.
- 7:36SPEAKER_01: So maybe you're not getting the the real tests at that point.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, like why would you even play around with the this quote unquote, you know, system or flow or pro uh progression that you're gonna work on in a game offensively, why would you not just go in and roll out QB1?
- 7:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean I think it's I and I wrote it down here, I think it's offensively, it's just gonna be a roller coaster all year.
- 8:00SPEAKER_04: I really do.
- 8:01SPEAKER_04: Um, and and it's gonna it's gonna be unfortunate, but I think it's based upon hard-headed play calling and spreading the love too much right now.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: You have too almost too many pieces, uh, and not necessarily good pieces, but pieces that you think can be good, i.e.
- 8:17SPEAKER_04: number four at quarterback.
- 8:19SPEAKER_04: Um I also think there's a running back that seems to be the odd man out right now, that we'll get to a little later on.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: But I don't know if it's trying to appease everybody and maintain the locker room, or if it's just being hard-headed about you actually think that you're gonna have you know three competent running backs constantly playing, switching in and out all the time, you know, uh the receiving core is kind of all over the place with what they've done.
- 8:51SPEAKER_04: And you honestly think Castellanos is gonna be a piece of this team as we get into the more difficult games on our schedule.
- 8:59SPEAKER_04: So I don't know right now, and I'm not inside of Joey Maguire's head.
- 9:05SPEAKER_04: I'm not inside of Mac Lefwich's head, but every time I think like this seems so stupid, I'm like, these guys are good football coaches, they've been doing stuff well to get them to this point.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: Am I the idiot for thinking that that stuff just doesn't work?
- 9:24SPEAKER_04: Or are they being just so hard-headed about everything?
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, it is important to remember that these guys do know way more about the sport in the locker room than any of us that just talk about it for fun and listen to and watch it for fun.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: I get a and I'm not trying to be a Debbie Downer about it, but I I'm but I'm with you.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: It kind of makes you wonder was there promises made with the deal that you made with Tony, uh Tommy?
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I can't stop um about him coming to Texas Tech for his, I believe this is his super senior year, correct?
- 9:55SPEAKER_04: So yeah, he had to he had to get uh he had to get approval to play this game.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and so you probably had to, you know, of course, lay out a bag, I'm sure, but also make a few promises to make sure that he's involved and think it's worth coming and live spending his last year of college football.
- 10:09SPEAKER_01: It's probably his last year of football.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Um I I'm gonna be I'm gonna be honest with you though, dude.
- 10:15SPEAKER_01: I don't necessarily hate the red zone packages, personally.
- 10:21SPEAKER_01: Like I think if they work, they work.
- 10:23SPEAKER_01: And to have a guy who's shifty and can really make the defense think differently about who is behind the line, I don't think that's the worst thing in the world.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: I really don't.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: And especially if it doesn't throw off will throw Will off his game, that's obviously a different kind of discussion that I don't know enough about with a quarterback psyche at this level.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: But I I personally don't hate the idea of having a guy who gives you those options to just uh scoot on in immediately with his quick legs.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Like I because you know, last year we all of us fans were complaining about our red zone woes, and they seem to be getting better.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And it maybe if it's if it's with uh with with Tommy, so be it.
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: But I know a lot of people have a logical issue with that.
- 11:04SPEAKER_01: For me, it's kind of like whatever works, works.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: But the midfield stuff does not work, yeah.
- 11:09SPEAKER_04: And I I like I can't deny that you know there's been some red zone stuff that's been good with Castellanos.
- 11:14SPEAKER_04: He's scored a number of times this year, both he's thrown a touchdown and he's also rushed in a few.
- 11:20SPEAKER_04: Um but why are you throwing him in on the first drive of the game?
- 11:26SPEAKER_04: Yeah, why are you throwing him in when you're on the opposite 40-yard line?
- 11:31SPEAKER_04: Why are you doing that to Will Hammond?
- 11:34SPEAKER_04: Because I do think it's affecting him.
- 11:35SPEAKER_04: He's a young quarterback, he's a he's a redshirt sophomore, you know?
- 11:39SPEAKER_04: Like show some confidence in your quarterback and play him.
- 11:46SPEAKER_04: And yeah, you're gonna have some moments where he throws three interceptions in in one quarter.
- 11:50SPEAKER_04: You know, he's gonna have some rough moments, but that is what a young quarterback does.
- 11:55SPEAKER_04: And I feel like Will Hammond is strong-willed enough to get past that.
- 12:01SPEAKER_04: And the same argument could be made of hey, the switching in and out, he's he's just gonna do what's best for the team.
- 12:07SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's what's best for the team.
- 12:09SPEAKER_04: That's the problem with it.
- 12:11SPEAKER_04: So I don't know.
- 12:12SPEAKER_04: I I think it is affecting Will, and I think you're seeing it affect Will, but also you're seeing a guy in Will Hammond who threw three interceptions in the second quarter and came back in the second half and played pretty darn well.
- 12:24SPEAKER_04: So he definitely had some more moments in the second half.
- 12:27SPEAKER_04: It was one of Will Hammond's worst games as a Retrator for sure, but you know, you still won by five touchdowns.
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: Well, yeah, I mean it's it's you can nitpick all you want when you win this big.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: But we can we can be honest with ourselves that that the first half is worthy of dissecting, which is what we're doing.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I like I'm not gonna sit here and say, like, what was us, you know, we're gonna I I'm not I'm certainly not on we're only gonna win eight games trained at all.
- 12:51SPEAKER_01: Like, I I I I just I think we're truly a team that continues to figure it out, thankfully.
- 12:57SPEAKER_01: I just think we're so spoiled by last year's ass beatings every single game that we're not used to the fact that other teams want to win too, dude.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: You know, it's like it's there's another team on the other side of that ball.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: It's not just you.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: And I do think so much of this is you, don't get me wrong, but I just sometimes I feel like we get a little lost in the sauce that this isn't just Texas Tech playing for a W.
- 13:20SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying that Sam Houston State, I'm sure, of course, they did believe that maybe they can come here and upset us, but on the same foot, it's like if you're playing in Houston, you know, Houston was a worthy opponent that could have beat you for sure.
- 13:31SPEAKER_01: So it's it's you're still continuing to figure it out.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: And before we move on from the quarterbacks, nice voice crack.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: Um, I I'm with you, dude.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: It's it's like uh, you know, maybe the coaches are in the side mindset of like, well, we want to get the veteran in there to maybe start it off because he's got the experience, you know, he's older, um, and blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:49SPEAKER_01: But I'm with you.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: I'm way more in the sense of like, like you said, Will Hammond is a young quarterback.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: He's playing at the highest level in college football.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: And you gotta let him have that uh experience, you gotta let him have those snaps, you gotta let him have those mistakes, especially in a game like this, in order for him to learn and grow.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Like, there's truly no replacement for experience.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: You can't practice experience.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: So you gotta let him get out there and make dumb mistakes.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: I'm not mad at Will.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: I'm really not mad at Will for this game.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: The three interceptions, insanely frustrating.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: It's his worst game, and I bet this I think we could book it now, and I'm might be a huge knock on wood thing.
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: This is gonna be the worst game of his career.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And while the interceptions were really bad, overall he still moved the ball plenty.
- 14:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, again, they're asking a lot of him, coming back from a major injury, and they're also throwing him off by you know, throwing in a Castellanos play here or there, and not letting him kind of get his feet under him early on.
- 14:45SPEAKER_04: And why is Tommy Castellanos in on the third offensive play for Texas Tag?
- 14:50SPEAKER_04: Like it just doesn't make any sense to me.
- 14:52SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it really doesn't.
- 14:53SPEAKER_04: The the way that they're using him outside of the red zone.
- 14:57SPEAKER_04: Red zone fine.
- 14:58SPEAKER_04: Keep keep doing it.
- 14:59SPEAKER_04: It's obviously it's working some uh you have had red zone troubles, and that has since subsided since the first game against Abilene Christian.
- 15:06SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I can I can see and I'm coming around on a little more, you know, using four in in the red zone, but outside of that, do not let him enter the ball game.
- 15:15SPEAKER_04: Like, just don't.
- 15:17SPEAKER_04: I'm so sick of it.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Um, and I'm sorry, did you did you have a thought to no no no?
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: I was gonna move on.
- 15:23SPEAKER_04: Go ahead.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Okay, cool.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Because like speaking of rushing though, like Will is finding his legs again.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: He ran one in, like, that was a great, just straightforward plow to the corner of the end zone there.
- 15:33SPEAKER_01: Um, and he's starting to learn that he can tuck and go again.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: And I think that was a missing piece of his confidence, and because it's part of his game.
- 15:40SPEAKER_01: Like he's just kind of this this this kid that can bulldoze you a little bit, you know, and and get those yards or touchdowns when you really need them.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: And sometimes the only possible way to do it is with the quarterback's own legs.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: And that was obviously a piece you didn't have with Barron Morton, a true pack, a pocket passer there, and now we got a guy who actually has the ability to kind of shoulder in some yards.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad to see him start getting those back.
- 16:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that definitely came around in the Houston game, and I think he does have the confidence now moving forward to use his legs a little more, which is important.
- 16:08SPEAKER_04: Uh to your point, it's a major part of Will Hammond's game.
- 16:11SPEAKER_04: Um, I was looking at this, you know, outlook, trying to understand who Texas Tech is through four games, and you have the same results as 2025, um, 4-0, but kind of complete opposite ways of getting there.
- 16:24SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, gross, kind of nasty to watch games versus whoa, we're doing everything right early on in the season in 2025.
- 16:34SPEAKER_04: You're seeing, you know, the the extreme amount of talent that you brought in from the portal in 2025.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: You're kind of disappointed overall in a lot of your transfers in 2026, even though I do think a lot of those guys are starting to come around a little more.
- 16:48SPEAKER_04: Um, and we'll talk about that as we get into it a little more.
- 16:51SPEAKER_04: But um, the schedule as a whole kind of flipped from what you thought it was gonna be.
- 16:56SPEAKER_04: And this is normal for Big 12 football.
- 16:59SPEAKER_04: We we truly don't know what we're talking about in the preseason for Big 12 football.
- 17:04SPEAKER_04: Um, you're seeing you know, teams like Cincy, West Virginia, Oklahoma State, kind of their stock is rising, you know, solid teams, better than what we expected.
- 17:13SPEAKER_04: We're still a little unsure on Arizona and Baylor.
- 17:15SPEAKER_04: The the schedule, the record can kind of fool you on those two teams, I think.
- 17:20SPEAKER_04: Um, and then you're seeing teams like Colorado, Arizona State, TCU, who their stocks are you know at the floor right now.
- 17:27SPEAKER_04: So, not necessarily Arizona State, they've just been slightly disappointing.
- 17:31SPEAKER_04: TCU's been a disaster.
- 17:33SPEAKER_04: Uh Colorado is a disaster, and as we'll talk about.
- 17:37SPEAKER_04: So, you know, some of these games that you were expecting to be a little more difficult, i.e.
- 17:41SPEAKER_04: TCU on Thanksgiving, maybe a trip to Boulder was gonna scare you a little bit.
- 17:46SPEAKER_04: Now, not so much.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 17:47SPEAKER_04: Um, and then you know, that trip to Stillwater is looking mighty, mighty scary right now.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: You know, it's it's really funny, and this is kind of a recurring theme, especially for folks who don't live in the Big Ten or SEC.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: It's it's this idea that it feels like we are so dead set on crowning champions before the first snap is ever made.
- 18:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: Because we heard all summer long about how easy Texas Tech schedule is.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And you know, maybe we maybe we were kind of buying a little bit, it's like, okay, you know, this this schedule kind of lines up nicely for you.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I never looked at our schedule and said, wow, what a cakewalk.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just because you know, football happens.
- 18:29SPEAKER_01: Like these are teams, this is college football, where it's not exactly a continuous, steady thing year to year.
- 18:37SPEAKER_01: Like, there are huge up and downs in this sport, and that's what's so fun about it.
- 18:40SPEAKER_01: And now you're sitting at number nine in the country in strength of schedule.
- 18:45SPEAKER_01: The single most difficult schedule outside of the SEC and Big Ten, according to uh ESBN's metrics.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So thank God we don't have to listen to that anymore.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Of course, some people will make the excuses of like, oh, that doesn't actually accurate accurately represent the situation.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: But again, it's just like you kind of turn that table immediately.
- 19:02SPEAKER_01: Like you are you're so set to use those metrics against us, but as soon as they're for us, they don't count.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: But that's life of every fan outside of the SECR Big Ten, generally speaking.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's you but you're totally right, dude.
- 19:14SPEAKER_01: Like the games on your schedule have kind of done a 180 across the board.
- 19:18SPEAKER_01: Um, some folks were calling OSU to be a tricky team at the start, and now it's really looking like they're a very tricky team.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: Um, it looks like they're really figuring things out, and I'm happy for that.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: Like, it's I'm not disappointed to see the teams you want to succeed in the Big 12 succeed.
- 19:32SPEAKER_01: And OSU is definitely one of those teams in my eyes, especially under uh a red raider like Eric Morris.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's it's a total up and down, dude.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: It's a total up and down.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: And I'm but I'm happy to see that our schedule or warrants uh any sort of accolades we gain as we go through it.
- 19:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, it's it's definitely wild to see how people, you know, the the bias comes out pretty quickly on whatever team you're talking about.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: I mean, you look at Oklahoma State and you're like, okay, you know, that Tulsa loss, yikes, you know, typical Big 12, you know, having a bad team that loses a bad non-conference game, and then they go and beat Oregon.
- 20:06SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 20:07SPEAKER_04: And uh, and everybody's high on Oregon for the most part.
- 20:09SPEAKER_04: So it's like, and now they're coming back to it a little bit, you know.
- 20:13SPEAKER_04: Um, so it's interesting uh looking at CFB as a whole, especially in week four.
- 20:17SPEAKER_04: I mean, the AP poll is a disaster, it always is in week four.
- 20:21SPEAKER_04: People stick to their preseason biases way too much.
- 20:23SPEAKER_04: It's it's a it's a real issue for a lot of AP voters, and the system itself is just not very good.
- 20:30SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, so it's and and you know, we'll talk about more when the first CFP rankings come out and everything, because those are the real rankings to start looking at.
- 20:40SPEAKER_04: AP poll is just whatever.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the AP poll is I I think fairly soon we'll start to see it kind of fade away.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Like, I think what you're gonna start to see is I bet you're gonna start to see perhaps it being replaced with a year-long CFP poll, you know, instead of this instead of this AP poll.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Because over and over again, you're starting to see the because what it's just journalists across the country who cover teams.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: Like it's not even like national guys who pay attention to the whole game.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Because I and I I guarantee you so many of these people just phoning in, you know, they're looking at the scores at the end of the day.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: Well, and half of them, half of them don't wait until the late night games, and you're seeing like you know, they they didn't even watch the USC game because you're like, uh, I mean, I'm not gonna stay up, I'm gonna submit this thing, and and you get random radio host in Boston that has no idea about half of the teams in the country and doesn't care to watch, even though they have an AP vote.
- 21:32SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 21:33SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, I so yeah, I mean the AP poll has always been a disaster.
- 21:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but it's just it it seems like it's becoming a continuous problem because now that conferences are so big and so disproportionate that it just it becomes a huge headache for so many people who don't get the benefit of it.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 21:50SPEAKER_01: You know, it it's just like can you please pay attention even a little bit?
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Uh did you know that uh Drink One's uh Missouri team?
- 22:00SPEAKER_01: Dorkowitzes.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: He is zero and sixteen against SEC teams that finish with a winning record.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Zero and sixteen.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: And they're basically always ranked.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: They're ranked right now.
- 22:13SPEAKER_04: But Tristan, it's just Tristan.
- 22:16SPEAKER_04: It's very Missouri.
- 22:17SPEAKER_04: They're in the SEC.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: You would kind of maybe buy it if we were talking about like a Florida, right?
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Where it's like, okay, you're just you see this brand, but it's Missouri.
- 22:29SPEAKER_01: Okay?
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:30SPEAKER_01: The most spiritually Big 12 team outside of the conference right now.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: That you're talking about that one.
- 22:37SPEAKER_01: It's just it's just so frustrating to see that happen.
- 22:40SPEAKER_01: So I feel like we we totally brushed past the Sam Easton State game.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: But are so are we talking national now?
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: No, no, no, no.
- 22:46SPEAKER_04: I'd like to get back to Sam.
- 22:48SPEAKER_01: Okay, because I was plenty of thoughts on the national.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: But if you want to get back to Sam before we get too far off track.
- 22:53SPEAKER_04: Yeah, let's let's let's get back on track to Sam.
- 22:57SPEAKER_04: My next point was welcome to the party, Austin Romain.
- 23:00SPEAKER_04: Welcome Big Lettuce to the show.
- 23:02SPEAKER_04: It was finally back, back to back pick sixes uh to make what would have been a hellish second quarter a lot more manageable.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 23:13SPEAKER_04: Um I mean that it definitely started off well, and then the last 10 minutes were a disaster.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: Um, but Austin Romain, how about you, bud?
- 23:21SPEAKER_04: And then he had yeah, school record, and then what eight total tackles led the team in tackles.
- 23:28SPEAKER_04: He's finally coming around.
- 23:29SPEAKER_04: And this is what we wanted.
- 23:31SPEAKER_04: You know, obviously made the made was part of the big tackle of Wegman there in the Houston game at the end of the game.
- 23:38SPEAKER_04: Back-to-back pick sixes.
- 23:40SPEAKER_04: It seems like he's really starting to get his feet under him.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm really hoping this is a couple of breakout games here for him, you know.
- 23:45SPEAKER_01: Like now I'm really hoping like he's got this like kind of demon mode thing turning on where he's just gonna become an animal back there.
- 23:52SPEAKER_01: And it's it's really something we're missing.
- 23:54SPEAKER_01: We're again, we're we've said this over and over again like the lack of spark, lots of lack of tenacity across this team.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Defense has not has not been nearly the same culprit as as offense in this sense, but like we do need dudes, you know, like we need guys who are just play that play angry with their heads on fire.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: So the back-to-back fix six is an anomaly, an absolute anomaly in football, right?
- 24:18SPEAKER_01: So I really hope that that's like some magic in the bottle that he's he's he's capping and ready to just carry to Boulder, Colorado, and then through the season.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: It's just an incredible game.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: Big Lettuce has arrived.
- 24:28SPEAKER_01: It's a this is what you this is what you recruited him for.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: You recruited him to come in and help alleviate the weight that we'll be missing with Jacob Rodriguez, who's kicking ass in the NFL.
- 24:39SPEAKER_04: Shout out J-Rodd.
- 24:40SPEAKER_04: First NFL interception was against one Patrick Mahomes.
- 24:45SPEAKER_04: Cool to see.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: But that it wasn't really Pat's fault, right?
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: It kind of like bounced around.
- 24:48SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, it yeah, it was a bounce, and then J-Rod made a great play, dived, and uh, and caught the football.
- 24:53SPEAKER_04: So that was awesome.
- 24:54SPEAKER_04: But um, my next thing that I wanted to talk about was uh there was a certain Texas Tech podcast host that said last week that Ledamian Guyton was going to be one of the greatest Red Raiders at the end of his career.
- 25:08SPEAKER_04: One I said one of the best.
- 25:10unknown: Okay.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: I don't want to rewrite history.
- 25:13SPEAKER_04: I said one of the best.
- 25:14SPEAKER_04: I'm not walking it back, by the way.
- 25:16SPEAKER_04: He could very well be the best.
- 25:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 25:19SPEAKER_04: He raised he raises the ceiling of this pass rush unit in a way that you would never expect a true freshman 17-year-old to do.
- 25:28SPEAKER_04: Um, the combination of him, Trey White getting healthier, and the interior defensive line absolutely playing better over the last few games.
- 25:37SPEAKER_04: I mean, Ledamian Guyon looked like Miles Garrett on those two sacks.
- 25:41SPEAKER_04: Like you saw the technique from a kid like that is insane.
- 25:46SPEAKER_04: And he's going to be, I mean, he may be your best pass rusher already.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's it's you could clearly see that any year or two, this is gonna be easily the best player on your team.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: And you could have an amazing team, and he could be easily the best player on your team.
- 26:03SPEAKER_01: Um, and like you said, I think this is there real potential that we have like a first pick, like a number one pick on our hands.
- 26:09SPEAKER_04: Well, we had a number two pick, and those two sacks uh looked very David Bailey-esque.
- 26:16SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I mean, uh yeah.
- 26:19SPEAKER_01: Well, no, I was just gonna say, like sometimes you just think that in in sports, uh the guys who are really good they grind every day, they live and love the game.
- 26:32SPEAKER_01: But sometimes you are just a freak and you're born with it.
- 26:38SPEAKER_01: Like you could be a student of the game and consume everything about football and be really good, of course, at 17, and you could be killing it your senior year of high school.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: This kid is killing it at the power four level of college football.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: Like, that's not just really good at the game and a student of it.
- 26:57SPEAKER_01: That man was born to play football.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: Or that kid, I should be saying, he's not even old enough to vote.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: So, like, it's just it's incredible.
- 27:06SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, you you look at those plays and you just uh I mean, there's guys that you see it, and if you have that talent and you put together the work ethic with it, it's I mean, the the sky's the limit for him.
- 27:19SPEAKER_04: It really is.
- 27:20SPEAKER_04: And I I'm so excited to watch him throughout the rest of the season.
- 27:24SPEAKER_04: And dude, I like I'm like, this guy's a difference maker already, four games in.
- 27:30SPEAKER_01: And think think about the defensive talent we're bringing in through the high school ranks.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Our line's gonna be insane.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 27:38SPEAKER_04: Plus, like interior defensive linemen like Jalen Brewster, right?
- 27:43SPEAKER_04: You know, those types of guys that are coming in.
- 27:46SPEAKER_04: I it's it's nutty.
- 27:47SPEAKER_04: Nutty to think about it.
- 27:48SPEAKER_04: And uh, I'm really excited for the defensive line, I think.
- 27:51SPEAKER_04: I actually think both lines have really raised their game season.
- 27:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, the offensive line, I think, played pretty well against Sam Houston.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, a few things here or there, some of the run-blocking stuff is a little iffy still, but um, no, I mean, I think both of the lines have absolutely raised their game.
- 28:08SPEAKER_01: Some so much of this can be contributed to like experience-built chemistry, right?
- 28:14SPEAKER_01: Where you whenever you're out there and between the whistles, like I it's just it's just different, right?
- 28:19SPEAKER_01: Whenever you're whenever you're playing for real stakes and real moments are happening, I I it just makes you wonder if if a real glue starts to take them together rather than you know, because we were pretty disappointed at the beginning of the year on both sides, honestly.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: And and then as we've continued on, sure, I mean the the teams besides like Houston, I mean Oregon State's looking like a wagon, um, and I'm not even joking.
- 28:41SPEAKER_01: Um it's it you've really seen some big strides, and that's all you ask.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: You know, it it's just like whenever you're scratching your head at the end of the year, you know, you're promised great things from your lines to at least you know fill the sh shadow of last year's.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: They're they're they're starting to start coming to into that into that form, and that's good to see.
- 29:02SPEAKER_01: It's all you can ask.
- 29:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 29:05SPEAKER_04: Um, we talked about two positive things in a row.
- 29:08SPEAKER_04: We gotta kind of bring it down a little bit.
- 29:10SPEAKER_04: Um I'm afraid it's time for Quinn Joyner to take a seat on the bench.
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: Um and I think he will.
- 29:19SPEAKER_04: Uh he had eight carries for 12 yards, averaging 1.5 yards uh a carry.
- 29:27SPEAKER_04: And there's just no reality, I think, where you have three running backs that are all solid additions, like solid contributors to the team.
- 29:39SPEAKER_04: And you've seen Cam Dickey come into his own over the last couple games.
- 29:43SPEAKER_04: You know, the fact that Jacoby Williams got nine touches between he only had six carries, he had three receptions, and he is your most dynamic offensive piece.
- 29:54SPEAKER_04: Um, he needs to have all eight of those Quinn Joyner carries.
- 29:57SPEAKER_04: Jacoby Williams needs to have those, or give them to Cam Dickey because he's been he's been really, really good.
- 30:02SPEAKER_04: So I I just like you look at what we had last year, and you're like, why are we trying to mix this up?
- 30:08SPEAKER_04: You know, you we we already had a great running back unit, uh a solid duo.
- 30:13SPEAKER_04: And you know, I I I don't have anything against Quinn Joyner, he just hasn't been very good.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: No, I I agree, dude.
- 30:19SPEAKER_01: It's I think it's time to move to move that three-headed monster down to two.
- 30:24SPEAKER_01: Like, because because both Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams have shown that they have real worth to this team.
- 30:29SPEAKER_01: Like, they can really work that run game that you really want to see.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: Like, you can really establish the run, as they always say.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: You can really run the damn ball with those two.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: And they both bring two very different styles of running to the team.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: And I just don't know what Quentin Joyner can do that's better than what the other other two bring to the table.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: And I don't know if it's a Quentin Joyner thing, like at in it out of his fault, because you know, these two had all the reps they got last year on the best team we've ever had, you know.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: And so they they've had some real experience out there on the gridiron as a red raider, and Quentin Joyner just unfortunately hasn't had that opportunity.
- 31:05SPEAKER_01: And we don't know if really has the ability either.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: It's just he hasn't really shown it.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: You're you're expecting a little more spark, a little more pop out of him, and it just more than anything, it's been more of a liability, which you don't want to see with the running back.
- 31:18SPEAKER_04: I love having him as a depth pace.
- 31:20SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 31:21SPEAKER_04: Like I if Cam Dickey, you know, God William were to go down or uh Jacoby Williams were to go down or whatever, you know, you're really happy to have Quentin Joyner there to take over because he is a good running back, I think.
- 31:35SPEAKER_04: And you know, he's also coming back from a major injury.
- 31:37SPEAKER_04: So, you know, sometimes stuff the stars just don't align for you.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: And unfortunately, with the injury and with the emergence of Cam Dickey and Jacoby Williams last year, and how they played through four games this season, you know, he's the odd man out right now.
- 31:51SPEAKER_04: And I don't really see any reason to continue playing Quentin Joyner and giving him eight carries in a game like this.
- 31:59SPEAKER_04: So um, you know, if this was a Big 12 game, I would have been heated to see Quentin Joyner with eight carries.
- 32:05SPEAKER_04: It just didn't need to happen.
- 32:06SPEAKER_04: So and again, Sam Houston, you're playing a lot of guys, it it is what it is.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: I'd love to say to your point earlier, maybe maybe you're just trying some things, maybe you're just looking to see if he's got something in the tank that you just haven't seen yet.
- 32:18SPEAKER_01: You might as well try to see if you can see it against the Bearcats rather than Boulder Colorado.
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: So I like him.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: I'm with you, dude.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Like, I really hope that we just run out with those two.
- 32:25SPEAKER_01: Like, we build the playbook around those two whenever it comes to the run game, and not really try to get cute, get Quentin Joiner in there.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: Like, let the other guys cook, let them get hot, and see what happens.
- 32:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: I didn't really have much else.
- 32:37SPEAKER_04: I thought the the secondary's been a little concerning.
- 32:40SPEAKER_04: Um, your coverage game has not been what you want.
- 32:44SPEAKER_04: Obviously, the second half.
- 32:45SPEAKER_04: The second half they they got it together a little more, but uh just inconsistent play, and it's due to some guys being in and out.
- 32:52SPEAKER_04: You know, Jordan was out for the first two games of the season, Peyton Morgan's new, Malika Scarra's new.
- 32:58SPEAKER_04: Polak's been a little disappointing at times, which is weird because he's a really, really good lockdown corner, and for the most part, he's still doing that.
- 33:07SPEAKER_04: But there's been a few plays where you're just like, what were you?
- 33:10SPEAKER_04: What were you doing there, pal?
- 33:11SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, Amir Boyd's been in and out of the lineup with injuries, he should be back this week.
- 33:16SPEAKER_04: So uh it's just been not consistent and not yeah, just not consistent.
- 33:22SPEAKER_04: So I I hope that they start to get together a little more as we get into Big 12 play.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's simply the soft spot on defense, but defense has been figuring it out.
- 33:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, he held Samuson State to 14, and he'll take that all day, even against a good one like Samuson State.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Like they're gonna score, and Samuson State Samuson State thrives on the offense.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: That's where the bread and butter is made.
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: They they throw it all over you.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: That's that's that's what they try to do.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: A true air team.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: Excuse me.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so I I'm with you.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: So nothing else to say about like the receiving game on our side.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: Like Kenny Johnson's a dude.
- 33:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Kenny's a dude.
- 33:55SPEAKER_01: Koy Aken had a game.
- 33:56SPEAKER_04: Koy Akin played well.
- 33:58SPEAKER_04: Uh, you know, you you don't have TC, so you're missing a big uh offensive weapon there.
- 34:03SPEAKER_04: You know, hopefully it that foot is healing and you know he can come back a little bit.
- 34:07SPEAKER_04: But uh, I just I don't think you quite understand what you have at receiver.
- 34:13SPEAKER_04: And you know, Kenny's pretty probably your most consistent guy.
- 34:16SPEAKER_04: Koy is is pretty consistent himself, but outside of that, it's kind of like a hit or miss.
- 34:22SPEAKER_04: You know, so what about Micah?
- 34:24SPEAKER_04: You're not gonna rely on Micah, you're not gonna rely on Malcolm Simmons, you're not gonna rely on Jalen Jones, you're not gonna rely on Dante Lee.
- 34:29SPEAKER_04: Like it's just uh these guys have not emerged in the way that you would hope through four games.
- 34:34SPEAKER_04: Um, but Kenny Johnson, Koy Akin, I think you're pretty happy with them.
- 34:37SPEAKER_01: I think you gotta, it's just a sign of the the times.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: It's a new age, you know.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: Like with Texas Tech, the one position group you could count on was receivers.
- 34:44SPEAKER_01: Like you're gonna have dudes there.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: And I'm not saying we don't have dudes there, but I just maybe it's like a situation where you don't have to rely on them as much with the how good our running backs are and all that, but and especially in our new our tight ends.
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: But it's just it's it's been it's been uh it's been a little disappointing.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: But other than that, I mean it's hard to complain whenever you're you're you're scoring this much anyway.
- 35:03SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and you hope the you know, so much of this is built upon the uh what am I thinking of of Will Hammond and them getting along, the dynamic there, you know, the they had half an offseason because they thought we were gonna have another quarterback.
- 35:19SPEAKER_04: So, you know, they're they're still trying to understand their flow.
- 35:23SPEAKER_04: And uh, you know, it seems like Kenny Johnson and and Will have something going.
- 35:27SPEAKER_04: Coy is obviously uh very reliable.
- 35:30SPEAKER_04: Um he's not gonna be your wide receiver one all the time, but he's definitely a reliable piece there.
- 35:35SPEAKER_04: And then uh you need TC back because he's just such a guy for you, and you need uh you need him to get healthy.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: He's your best uh receiver at the end of the day.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Um, anyway, uh the probably the really disappointing part about this game, dude.
- 35:49SPEAKER_01: You punted eight times.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you punted eight times against the stuff.
- 35:53SPEAKER_04: A lot of that came in the first half.
- 35:54SPEAKER_04: A lot of that came in the first half.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Doesn't matter.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: No, I know you punted eight times against Samson State.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: That's insane, dude.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: We have a dude at Punter, don't get me wrong.
- 36:04SPEAKER_01: Like he's crushing it, but you are you should not be punting eight times against Samson State.
- 36:11SPEAKER_04: Crikey.
- 36:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah.
- 36:14SPEAKER_04: I I I like Will Carroll.
- 36:16SPEAKER_04: I don't want to see him very often.
- 36:17SPEAKER_04: Um but hey, you know, that it that is what it is.
- 36:21SPEAKER_04: So again, five touchdown win.
- 36:24SPEAKER_04: You won 49 to 14 against Samson State.
- 36:27SPEAKER_04: So I know we're talking about You did the dang thing.
- 36:30SPEAKER_04: You're going into Big 12 play with a not so great opponent.
- 36:33SPEAKER_04: You know, you get a chance to kind of get right in an away game.
- 36:36SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, probably not a very raucous environment right now.
- 36:40SPEAKER_04: Um you want to talk about Colorado?
- 36:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, a little bit.
- 36:44SPEAKER_04: 6 30 p.m.
- 36:46SPEAKER_04: Saturday, October 3rd, on Diesel Fox.
- 36:50SPEAKER_04: Big Fox.
- 36:52SPEAKER_04: 6 30 Central Time, 5 30 local time kickoff.
- 36:56SPEAKER_04: Um Colorado Buffaloes, man.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: Um They are what they say in a skid.
- 37:04SPEAKER_04: You know, you kind of thought there was maybe something there after Georgia Texas?
- 37:08SPEAKER_04: Yellow! Georgia Texas It got very bad after that.
- 37:13SPEAKER_04: 41 to 7 loss to Northwestern.
- 37:19SPEAKER_04: Northwestern to Wildcats.
- 37:21SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 37:22SPEAKER_04: Purple team.
- 37:23SPEAKER_04: Not not historically very good.
- 37:25SPEAKER_01: No.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Historically very bad.
- 37:28SPEAKER_04: And you lost 41 to 7.
- 37:30SPEAKER_04: You lost 23 to 13 to Baylor.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: A bad Baylor team.
- 37:34SPEAKER_04: With a fence post a quarterback who can't move right now because his ankle is destroyed.
- 37:40SPEAKER_04: And just not good.
- 37:42SPEAKER_04: It's not good.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: It's really bad.
- 37:44SPEAKER_01: The the it's it's not going well over there.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: And I swear, you turn on a Colorado game, and I know we were making these jokes in the offseason watching their practices or something like that, like that, but it straight-up looks like you're watching a high school team play a college team size-wise.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Like those dudes do not look uh big.
- 38:06SPEAKER_01: Up to snuff.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Indeed.
- 38:08SPEAKER_01: They look like they should be uh, you know, um maybe playing FCS.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Like it, you know what it looks like to me?
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: It looks like a 2010's Texas Tech University team, like size-wise.
- 38:20SPEAKER_02: You don't want that.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Nobody wants that.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: And I mean that in all ways.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: I mean that particularly on their lines as well.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: We all know it, we all remember it, we've all buried it in Team Town into our wretched souls, but there's a reason why Patrick Mahomes is good on the scramble, and it's not a positive from tech.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: So I see I I see that Colorado has the same ills, and let's just say I hope that we find use our newfound size and aggression in those places to bully the crap out of those little guys.
- 39:01SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 39:02SPEAKER_04: Uh, you look at the the lines win you football games.
- 39:06SPEAKER_04: That's clear.
- 39:07SPEAKER_01: That's that's been what's missing.
- 39:08SPEAKER_04: That's been what's missing at Texas Tech.
- 39:10SPEAKER_04: That's what we have now, um, you know, especially over the last couple of years.
- 39:14SPEAKER_04: And Colorado's defensive line and their offensive line look bad bad.
- 39:18SPEAKER_04: So, you know, try and understand, and and uh it's uh they're potentially making a quarterback change.
- 39:24SPEAKER_04: They played both of them in the Baylor game.
- 39:26SPEAKER_04: Uh, Isaac Wilson, Julian Lewis, both of them, you know, what are you gonna do when you have a bad O-line at times?
- 39:33SPEAKER_04: And so um yeah, I think this is a uh this might be just a certified Dion disaster class happening this season.
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: I think they got a real stinker.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're projected less by a lot of people, and I wasn't really buying it.
- 39:47SPEAKER_01: Whenever we did our things, I put them on like 10.
- 39:49SPEAKER_01: I was like, I don't know, I feel like Dion's gonna find some stars who are just too good for compared to everybody else on the team to kind of whale them over a few teams, but which could still be the case, but it's they're bad, dude.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: They're bad.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: But that northwestern game like really showed how bad they can be.
- 40:08SPEAKER_04: Well, and it's it's the locker room, it's the emotional, it's the mental.
- 40:12SPEAKER_04: Like nothing, nothing is working.
- 40:14SPEAKER_04: You know, if you're like a little encouraged and having you know not a lot of talent on your team, that's a different thing.
- 40:20SPEAKER_04: This is like you don't have a lot of talent and they're not encouraged right now.
- 40:24SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 40:25SPEAKER_04: It's uh it's tough, but again, you have to go on the road.
- 40:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's early in the season.
- 40:30SPEAKER_04: You know, it's not it's not an easy thing to do, it's a night game.
- 40:34SPEAKER_04: The the Buffalo fans will be there.
- 40:36SPEAKER_04: Uh, they may not be you know super super pumped up prior to the game, but they're gonna be there.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: Um you're hosting a the number the number 12 in the country.
- 40:45SPEAKER_01: You're gonna show up.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Exactly, exactly.
- 40:47SPEAKER_04: You're yeah, exactly.
- 40:48SPEAKER_04: And and this is Texas Tech who talked a lot of crap in the offseason, and you know, you want to beat pretty pretty badly, just like every Big 12 team does.
- 40:56SPEAKER_04: So, you know, you can't go in.
- 40:58SPEAKER_04: Texas Tech just needs a better mental mindset going into games.
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: Like they need to assert their dominance, is what they need to do.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: They need to go in with a confident stance on hey, we're better than you, and we're gonna go out and prove it.
- 41:16SPEAKER_04: Like we can't do this whole little song and dance of like playing with our food, which I think we've done a lot of this this season to start off.
- 41:25SPEAKER_04: So I I think you go into Colorado and you just absolutely look to beat them to shreds.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: We're doing the infamous playing to your competition situation.
- 41:35SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 41:36SPEAKER_01: Thankfully in Samison State, you punted that right into the moon in the second half.
- 41:41SPEAKER_01: But up until that point, it's been truly a you're scraping by, you're fighting for your life in games that you shouldn't be.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: The Houston won, all you needed to do was win that game.
- 41:51SPEAKER_01: Didn't matter how it looked.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: But with Oregon State and ASU, you didn't inspire a lot of confidence with your ability to dominate.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: And I think thankfully, in the second half you did that.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: But against better competition, you two quarters won't cut it.
- 42:06SPEAKER_01: Two quarters will cost you a game.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: That's half the game.
- 42:10SPEAKER_01: So we need to see more.
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Like you said, you need you're better than them.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: You go out, I gotta go out there and show it.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: You can't you can't just walk, you can't sleepwalk through this.
- 42:20SPEAKER_01: And losing to Colorado is a backbreaker.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Like I don't want to be I don't want to be melodramatic.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: But this Colorado team is really, really, really bad.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: And losing to them is an awful sign for things to come.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: So this is one you cannot drop.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: And truly, Steven, I expect you to blow them out.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: And not blowing them out, I think, is a bit of a failure.
- 42:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, you know, I I I think we're all pretty sick of underperforming expectations right now, because right now that's what Texas Tech has done in pretty much every single game, Houston aside.
- 42:56SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, I I you want to see a complete game.
- 43:00SPEAKER_04: That's what you want to see from Texas Tech.
- 43:02SPEAKER_04: You don't want to see quarters like the first quarter of Houston or the second quarter of um who do we just play?
- 43:10SPEAKER_04: Uh Sam Houston.
- 43:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I you don't want to see those.
- 43:14SPEAKER_04: You want to see just consistent, solid play.
- 43:18SPEAKER_04: And if you make a mistake here or there, like say Will takes a shot and it's a 50-50 ball, it gets intercepted.
- 43:23SPEAKER_04: You can live with that.
- 43:24SPEAKER_04: You know, you can't live with not running the right routes, not understanding the right call, guys confused, Joey having to call timeouts for no reason.
- 43:34SPEAKER_04: Like, you can't do that in this one.
- 43:36SPEAKER_04: You need to play solid football throughout the entire game, and you're gonna be just fine.
- 43:43SPEAKER_04: But we're we need to get out of our own way.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: I I I don't think Colorado is going to put up too much of a fight.
- 43:51SPEAKER_01: I think this is a team that's gonna be licking its wounds.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: I think this is a team who looks at number 12 coming into town and be like, I don't know, man.
- 43:58SPEAKER_01: You know, that's probably what this.
- 44:00SPEAKER_01: Saying in the locker room right now, and you better make sure that's true because as soon as they might get a sniff of hope, man, like that's when games start to get close.
- 44:08SPEAKER_01: So I really think you need to crush their dreams immediately.
- 44:11SPEAKER_01: And I know Joey and Joey and Dion are boys.
- 44:13SPEAKER_01: I'm sure Dion's gonna do his best to try to help hype up the team for this, but I don't know.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: I think they're probably already seeing that the season might be cooked for them, and it's it's not difficult to imagine that many of them are already looking at the transfer portal because this is kind of a portal program at this point.
- 44:28SPEAKER_01: And I mean that's I'm not saying that is we're we're not exactly exclusively home brewed either, but like they're even more so.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Um, so what'd you think of Dion's statements of we're better than the teams we're losing to?
- 44:43SPEAKER_01: We just haven't figured it out.
- 44:45SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it's true.
- 44:49SPEAKER_04: Uh no, I don't think Baylor's good, but I I also maybe that applies to Baylor.
- 44:55SPEAKER_04: Maybe that applies to Northwestern, but Northwestern's they gave Indiana a run.
- 44:59SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they took a lot of, you know, like I think Northwestern might be a little better than what we think, but um, you know.
- 45:06SPEAKER_04: Georgia is 40 points better than you.
- 45:08SPEAKER_04: No, no, I don't think Northwestern is 40 points better than anybody.
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: So it's uh and that maybe they're pretty, they're pretty decent.
- 45:16SPEAKER_04: They're actually pretty decent.
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: They are, they are, but I'm not I'm not saying that yet.
- 45:18SPEAKER_04: No, I I I may agree with him on Baylor just because I'm not a I I I've watched Baylor and I don't think they're very good.
- 45:25SPEAKER_04: Uh they're also playing with an injured quarterback right now who can't really walk, and as we know, not uh limits you offensively.
- 45:32SPEAKER_04: Um, but they still made it work over there in Waco, and uh yeah man, I don't know.
- 45:38SPEAKER_04: I I I this team is not very good in Colorado, and you need to take care of business, but we haven't done that so far this season.
- 45:48SPEAKER_04: We have played to our competition, and if we do that again, we could run into some trouble.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: Hot take.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: I bet Oregon State beats this Colorado team.
- 45:58SPEAKER_04: I uh yeah, I I I agree with that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_04: Oregon State's good.
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: They're good, dude.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: They're good.
- 46:03SPEAKER_01: Um I I think that you're pretty lucky with this being your Big 12 opener on the road now that the season's here.
- 46:11SPEAKER_01: I know it might have been kind of freaky at first glance, like you just don't know what you're gonna get with Colorado.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're kind of showing their colors.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: They might be a program on the downside at this point, like uh administration-wise.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: But it's I think you're pretty lucky with with what you're getting.
- 46:26SPEAKER_01: I think that TechSech wins in a big fashion.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: I know I there was a hot take last.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: I told you it was a hot take, dude.
- 46:32SPEAKER_04: It was not a hot take.
- 46:33SPEAKER_04: It was not a hot take.
- 46:34SPEAKER_04: We still won by five touchdowns.
- 46:36SPEAKER_01: I know, but it took the second half to do it.
- 46:38SPEAKER_01: Um I think all you see is the final score, baby.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: I think you see a more focused Will Hammond.
- 46:44SPEAKER_01: I think you see a Mac left which that's more prepared to use a more effective playbook.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: You know, he's I don't think he's gonna be too scared to show plays anymore that now that we're getting into Big 12 play.
- 46:56SPEAKER_01: Uh and I think you see a defense that's continually improved show their stuff and shut them down.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: I think you quiet that crowd early.
- 47:04SPEAKER_01: And I hope you walk home with a comfortable at least three-score difference at the end of the day.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 47:11SPEAKER_04: I I I don't think that's a uh a bad take at all.
- 47:15SPEAKER_04: I think you do when this one, when you look, I mean, this has been the case though with a lot of Texas Tech games, like we haven't been really happy outside of Houston.
- 47:23SPEAKER_04: You know, in Houston, we were just like uh we were more disappointed, tempered expectations from the first two games to be like, hey, let's just get a dub here, you know.
- 47:31SPEAKER_04: But for this one, you want to see a comfortable 21 plus point victory on the road, you really do.
- 47:38SPEAKER_04: And I don't know if that's gonna happen.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: I don't think Texas Tech has shown a lot of um positivity uh to to just go in and bully and bulldoze a team like they should, uh, like we were all expecting prior to the season.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: But you know, I I do think you win this one um pretty comfortably, and if it's less than 14 or 21, uh we're gonna have some some tough conversations, I think.
- 48:08SPEAKER_04: Uh, and depending, I don't know, say Colorado's up for it and they're ready to go.
- 48:12SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't know, man.
- 48:13SPEAKER_04: It's it's further to my first point of making like if you know what this Texas Tech team is, if you're confident in what they are, you're wrong.
- 48:21SPEAKER_04: Because they're all over the place to start the season.
- 48:24SPEAKER_04: And they have a young quarterback and they have an offensive coordinator who's been inconsistent, and I I just don't really know right now.
- 48:31SPEAKER_01: Well, if if what you say comes true, like we went by 14, A, I don't think I'm gonna be that mad about it.
- 48:36SPEAKER_01: But B, it's like so this is this is what the season's gonna be, huh?
- 48:38SPEAKER_01: Like, we're just gonna figure it out each game kind of thing, you know?
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:41SPEAKER_01: Rather than just bulldozing our competition.
- 48:44SPEAKER_01: Um, I tell you what though, Steven, final thought on Colorado, unless you have any.
- 48:48SPEAKER_01: Um, is I'm kind of disappointed this is not a big game.
- 48:52SPEAKER_01: You know, like for the I know, I know for you have different reasons, but like for the Big 12's sake, having a highly ranked Texas Tech versus a juiced up ranked Deion Sanders Colorado, like that would do numbies for the conference.
- 49:10SPEAKER_01: That would that would be a storyline for the conference, but unfortunately, it's just what's going on over there, it's just ain't working.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: And it's just you know, you know, to the point that we talked about earlier, though, the Oklahoma State game looks a lot more enticing now.
- 49:25SPEAKER_04: It does, you know, the West Virginia game looks a lot more enticing now.
- 49:28SPEAKER_04: The Cincinnati game looks a lot more enticing now.
- 49:31SPEAKER_04: I know they played a tight one against Miami of Ohio, but they're sitting here at what, 3-1, 4-0?
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 49:36SPEAKER_04: Where are they?
- 49:37SPEAKER_04: So it you know, there's games on this, yeah, they're 4-0.
- 49:42SPEAKER_04: And they just beat Kansas State.
- 49:44SPEAKER_04: You know, like they're if they're an Arizona win away next week from potentially being ranked.
- 49:49SPEAKER_04: So and even Arizona right now, you know, like you're looking at a lot of teams that maybe you were thinking early on in the schedule, you're like, oh, it's just gonna be a whatever, Texas Tech's gonna kick their bud now.
- 50:01SPEAKER_04: You know, Texas Tech hasn't looked great, and also you know, these teams look a little better than expected.
- 50:06SPEAKER_04: So yes, you may lose a little bit of juice from the Colorado game, but you've gained a little bit of juice from the Oklahoma State game.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: That wasn't so much a in indictment on like the streak the scheduled conversation.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: I just meant from like a storyline conversation.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: It just would have been a lot of fun, especially since Joe and the Dion are so tight.
- 50:23SPEAKER_01: Whether this would be like a competitive game.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: It would have I think that would just been a really enticing matchup, you see, in the conference.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: But unfortunately, one of them hasn't held up their end of the bargain.
- 50:34SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 50:35SPEAKER_04: You could argue both haven't this season, even though we are 4-0, and you know, you don't apologize for being undefeated.
- 50:41SPEAKER_01: Exactly, dude.
- 50:42SPEAKER_04: It's yeah, so we gotta see more.
- 50:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, dude, you want to take it from there?
- 50:48SPEAKER_01: Like you're not gonna apologize for being 4-0.
- 50:50SPEAKER_01: Want to start there?
- 50:51SPEAKER_04: What do you want to say?
- 50:53SPEAKER_01: I want to I want to I we we already we already launched some torpedoes at the A people, and I want to have a conversation about Textex rank.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: You're number 12 in the country, and this is gonna sound like I'm talking out of two sides of my mouth here.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: One side of me says 12 is fair with with the way you played with the with the with what you put out.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 51:19SPEAKER_01: But at the same time, you look at the people that are above you, you're like, why?
- 51:23SPEAKER_01: Why are they above us?
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: Like, it's it to me, it you should be above every team that's not undefeated.
- 51:33SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't know why Ole Miss and LLC were above you.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Like, you should, I will I woke up on Sunday telling my wife, first thing in the morning, not I love you, not good morning, Texas Tech should be top 10 today.
- 51:47SPEAKER_01: Is what I told her.
- 51:49SPEAKER_01: And to my dismay and not surprise at the end of at the ultimately, you are not top ten.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: I expected you to move up to 10, but instead you dropped a spot to 12 from 11.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: It's just kind of bull crap, man.
- 52:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: Um you have a ranked win, by the way.
- 52:09SPEAKER_01: You have a ranked win.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: I think this you're undefeated.
- 52:12SPEAKER_04: I think this has to do a lot with Texas AM.
- 52:19SPEAKER_04: For some reason, people think that a win against Texas AM in 2026 is a good win.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're seeing AM.
- 52:28SPEAKER_04: You're seeing Kentucky, for some reason, who was not ranked after beating Texas AM, but for now, for some reason, is ranked, um, get ranked.
- 52:37SPEAKER_04: I don't know why.
- 52:39SPEAKER_04: You beat a crappy Texas AM team.
- 52:42SPEAKER_04: LSU is above you right now.
- 52:44SPEAKER_04: Yeah, you obliterated Texas AM, but again, no ranked wins.
- 52:48SPEAKER_04: Texas AM is not very good.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: LSU has no ranked wins at this point.
- 52:52SPEAKER_04: I think tech I think LSU and Olmus are clearly a step above, you know, a certain tier in the SEC.
- 53:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 53:01SPEAKER_04: I I I do think that those two teams are good.
- 53:03SPEAKER_04: I'm not necessarily mad at the teams ranked above you right now.
- 53:08SPEAKER_04: I'm not.
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: Um I I'm more I'm more upset with the back half of the AP poll than anything.
- 53:16SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't think I don't think Texas Tech has proved that they deserve higher than 12 right now.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: I just I I get that, dude.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: But it's just like, am I I I think it's a f it in like a completely fair world, sure.
- 53:30SPEAKER_01: I understand where why Tex Tech is where they are.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: But in the way that the AP poll operates typically, is Tex Tech's undefeated, you have a ranked win, you should only be moving up as teams drop down.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: You should not be getting leapfrogged, you should not be moving down, you should only be moving up.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: And unfortunately, I think it's it's I think it's truly a case of you have the wrong logo on your helmet and wrong patch on your jersey.
- 53:58SPEAKER_01: Like there's really no other explanation.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: And I'm not trying to be like this like rah-rah, Big 12, the SEC and Big Ten are trying to ruin our lives.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Like, it's just like by the AP polls, typical behavior, Tech's Tech should be top 10 right now.
- 54:11SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:12SPEAKER_01: Like there's just there's no excuse for otherwise.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and and it's I think the only school you can really make an argument right now is LSU.
- 54:21SPEAKER_04: Um, maybe old mess to your maybe uh BYU.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: I think you make an argument against BYU.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: You should be able to BYU.
- 54:28SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you has no ranked win.
- 54:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, no, that's true.
- 54:33SPEAKER_04: Um, I think people are hyping up Florida a whole lot right now.
- 54:36SPEAKER_01: And Florida launched 13 spots.
- 54:40SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they they really rose.
- 54:42SPEAKER_04: Um this week will be interesting because you're getting a Bama who's at Mississippi State.
- 54:48SPEAKER_04: Could be spooky, but again, if Bama loses to Mississippi State, Mississippi State's gonna go above you.
- 54:54SPEAKER_04: Probably like that's that's just how it's gonna work.
- 54:56SPEAKER_04: And then, you know, everybody else, like, is Texas at OU?
- 55:01SPEAKER_04: Oh no, they don't play this week.
- 55:02SPEAKER_04: Okay, that's the following week.
- 55:04SPEAKER_04: That would be funny.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: If John the Tier Okay if John the Tier and the Sooners, I'm okay.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: I'm normally sooner for the Sooners and that.
- 55:12SPEAKER_04: I'm normally pro-sooners in that matchup, yes, but wow am I pro-sooners in that matchup this year.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: They're bad, dude.
- 55:20SPEAKER_04: OU is bad.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: They're very bad.
- 55:21SPEAKER_04: I mean, the the disaster class we talked about Dion being a disaster class, like that OU stuff was horrible.
- 55:27SPEAKER_01: It's bad.
- 55:28SPEAKER_04: Horrid.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: And OU are blowing behind right now, and it doesn't stink to see.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: You're not mad about it.
- 55:35SPEAKER_04: No, it doesn't.
- 55:37SPEAKER_04: And like I said, I I'm more mad at the back half of the AP poll right now.
- 55:42SPEAKER_04: Tennessee's still ranked for some reason.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: Uh Missouri's still ranked for some reason.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: Kentucky is ranked for some reason.
- 55:50SPEAKER_04: Uh, all of them have a loss on the schedule.
- 55:53SPEAKER_04: And you're looking at, you know, uh Penn State.
- 55:56SPEAKER_04: Well, Penn State lost.
- 55:57SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah, I guess uh whatever, but it that's where the SEC bias, I think, comes in the most right now, is where you have your back half of the top 25 because people on the AP poll are trying to figure out teams to put 21 through 25, and they're like, oh, this team's in the SEC, they're probably better.
- 56:14SPEAKER_04: So boom, I'm gonna put them there.
- 56:16SPEAKER_04: And that's where the that's where you get that.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: So it's not people who actually like you'd see a lot more North Dakota state love from AP voters that you know actually knew what they were talking about.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: You'd see Virginia.
- 56:27SPEAKER_04: Virginia Tech, yeah, Virginia Tech, Nebraska even undefeated.
- 56:31SPEAKER_04: I know they haven't really played anybody, but uh, I'm I'm seeing Cincinnati getting some votes now.
- 56:36SPEAKER_04: Northwestern with one vote, kind of like what?
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, I mean I I if I mean I don't know if it if it if it's not doing the job correctly, but if I was an AP voter, as soon as you lose, you're dropping like low.
- 56:54SPEAKER_01: Like I because like in my like logically in my brain, I'm not putting you above a team that continues to win their games.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: Like, is that not why we're doing this sport in the first place?
- 57:03SPEAKER_01: Is that not what the poll is for?
- 57:05SPEAKER_01: Is who's the best?
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: If you lose, you're clearly not the best.
- 57:08SPEAKER_01: That's the point of this.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: So there would be a lot of movement if I was if I was in control of this.
- 57:14SPEAKER_01: So, and I I genuinely I genuinely think I'd be a very fair voter.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Like, truly.
- 57:19SPEAKER_01: Like a lot more G6 would get teams with a lot more votes, and uh a lot of teams who lose one or two games would be out pretty dang quick.
- 57:27SPEAKER_01: So it's uh it's just dumb, dude.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: And I know it's par for the course, and you can't do nothing but you know complain like we are at the end of the day.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: But thankfully, at least the Big 12 is getting some love.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: You have five teams in the Big 12 in the top in the top 25.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: That's not bad at all.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: That's that's pretty dang good.
- 57:43SPEAKER_01: So it's it's good to start seeing some actual respect come to the league because it's looking like a much stronger year at the upper half of the Big 12 than last year, so it's deserved.
- 57:54SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how these next few weeks play out and who's who's kind of making their way uh above one another.
- 58:01SPEAKER_04: Like if Oklahoma State just keeps this rolling, like whoa.
- 58:04SPEAKER_04: That's like I am so spooked of Stillwater right now.
- 58:08SPEAKER_04: I am very, very spooked.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: Um with how game being a big deal.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: Game day or big fox kind of situation.
- 58:18SPEAKER_01: Big noon.
- 58:19SPEAKER_02: Diesel Fox.
- 58:21SPEAKER_01: Because have they have either the big uh big big noon or uh college game day gone anywhere except for Big Ten or SEC yet?
- 58:28SPEAKER_01: I don't think they have.
- 58:31SPEAKER_04: Uh the game day is going to an ACC game, I think.
- 58:38SPEAKER_04: Aren't they going this week?
- 58:40SPEAKER_01: I don't know, they don't keep up with it.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 58:45SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I know Big Noon's only gonna Big Ten schools.
- 58:48SPEAKER_04: Um College Game Day going to Iowa.
- 58:58SPEAKER_04: So, Big Ten.
- 59:00SPEAKER_04: First time they're not in the SEC.
- 59:02SPEAKER_04: And shout out Iowa.
- 59:03SPEAKER_04: 4-0.
- 59:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah, great, great like great last-minute win, awesome, awesome to see them beat Michigan.
- 59:10SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, uh you're just you know, it's tough.
- 59:15SPEAKER_04: Stuff out here in these streets.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: While while we're like floating over the world here, do you have any remarks about the way uh things went down in Big 12 country?
- 59:26SPEAKER_04: Um You know, I thought Oklahoma State, West Virginia was a really good game until the final the final bit where Oklahoma State took over.
- 59:34SPEAKER_04: I'm still so unsure about Arizona right now, I just have no idea on on who they are, what they are.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: To to to to weigh too much on a pullman game, though, and I'm not even trying to be a meme.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: Like it's you know, Wazoo wanted to win that game against a former Pac-12 opponent, you know, there was some salt in the wound there, uh, naturally.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: Um, so I I I I I think that Arizona's a good squad, and I think they'll be mid-range in the Big 12 ultimately.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_04: Um Utah looks like a wagon.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: Dude.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: Iowa State figured them out for a bit.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: They let it slip through the fingers, but they don't they should they just don't have the horses on offense, and Utah's defense is quite good.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: So it's but Utah, Utah's looking strong.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and even Iowa State's not an easy win.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: I mean, they went uh it Ames is a tough place.
- 1:00:28SPEAKER_04: Uh BYU was off last week, but they'll they'll play, I think, TCU.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they're at TCU this week.
- 1:00:34SPEAKER_04: So again, you should see a BYU beatdown, but I don't know.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: Road game.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, not exactly in a hostile environment, but no, we'll see.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_01: No, we'll see maybe a TCU with their bag against their wall.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then uh, you know, Arizona State still coming back from from London.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_01: Hosting, hosting B.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: U.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: We'll hosting Baylor's.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_01: That'll be interesting to see a Baylor go up against a a stronger Big 12 opponent.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_04: Baylor's three and one.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_01: They they okay.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_01: Yes, they are.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_04: Yes, they're I have no idea.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_04: I have no idea what Baylor is.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_04: I have no idea.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_04: No, I think they're bad.
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: I think they're bad too.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_04: I think they're bad.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_03: Uh but again, I don't know.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: I is Cincinnati good?
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: It was funny watching the mouse beat Sonny Dykes.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: That was funny.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_01: Um, so while we're on Baylor and TCU, real quick before we move on, do you think both of them have a new head coach at the end of the season?
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_01: Both of them.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_04: Dude, TCU, if they continue on this trajectory, there's no way.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_01: TCU's vibes are bad.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_01: Like both of them are really bad.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_01: Like in the locker room, it's really bad.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_01: It's not even just like a paper thing.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: It's not even like a W's and L's thing.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: And because I think if it was a Ws and L thing, I think he gets another year.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: Because you don't just you don't just I think his extension was fairly recent, and you don't just fire the guy that took you to the national championship.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: But it's dude, it's it's bad.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_01: Like there, the the the situation there is tense.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_01: So I could see them firing him beyond be making a bowl season.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_04: I yeah, I could see that, and now I want to see TCU's schedule.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_04: BYU at Baylor, hosting West Virginia, hosting Kansas, that's probably a win, at Arizona, hosting K-State, hosting Utah at Texas Tech.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_04: That is not a tough stretch at the end.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_04: That's a not that's not a good like that's like a four-win team, five-win team with the way they've been playing.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: West Virginia's looks really good, but we don't mean we don't know if they're just like an automatic WRL yet either.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, same with Arizona's.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_04: That's fair.
- 1:02:44SPEAKER_04: Um Baylor's schedule.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: Baylor has a stretch there at the end of October, early November, where they're at Kansas at UCF, hosting Iowa State.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_04: Wow.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_04: You know, that's a pretty simple stretch.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_04: It's a pretty nice stretch, but then they finish at BYU, Texas Tech, and Waco, and then at Houston.
- 1:03:02SPEAKER_04: Um they got the revival re in there uh right after Arizona State.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_04: Well, they have a bye week, and then it's the revival re.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't know, man.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: It's it's I don't know about Baylor.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_04: I don't know about a lot of teams at the Big 12 right now.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_04: It seems like one week they play one way, one week they play another way, and then you're like, I don't know.
- 1:03:22SPEAKER_01: I think our private school friends are are bad.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_01: I think they're really bad.
- 1:03:26SPEAKER_01: Um and I think I think there's a I think there's a really strong chance that they both lose their head coaches this year.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: Um more so Baylor than TCU.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: But I I think there's a real chance that you see the importing of another rivalry into this rivalry.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: I think there's a strong chance you see Texas State and UTSA's head coaches head any which way.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Which would be really fun to have in the Big 12 like that.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_04: So bringing the bringing the I-35 rivalry.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: The H E B 35 rivalry on up.
- 1:04:01SPEAKER_04: Little trailer GJ Kenny action in Fort Worth and Waco.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_01: Who wins that?
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: Who's who's who's who would you prefer to have as a head coach?
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_04: Probably trailer.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: I lean trailer as well.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_04: Yeah, probably trailer.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_04: I mean, I don't think either's a bad choice right now, but yeah, I mean, it's it's really difficult to win consistently at those two programs right now.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_04: Oh, for sure.
- 1:04:24SPEAKER_04: And uh they've been doing a pretty darn good job.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_04: Like UTSA has been solid this year.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_04: I think T-State has also been pretty good.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_01: The they're both new FBS programs, and both of them are the best coaches in their school histories, like easily.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: So it's just it's interesting to see how that might may unfold.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_01: But uh, dude, so you we kind of went over real quick with Cincinnati beating Kansas State.
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: Cincinnati might be a little spicy.
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_04: Now, granted, I you know, I tuned in for a bit of that game.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_04: Student section was rocking, dude.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a cool chance going.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_04: They are electric out there, that is not an easy environment to play in, and that's what I took away from that.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_04: Like Avery Johnson and Kansas State, I don't think are phenomenal, but they were shook for sure from that environment.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: For sure, and we have to go there.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_01: And I don't, it's not gonna be the same fire that if Soresby was slinging it, but it's it is um it is gonna be it's gonna be raucous, and it's gonna be uh probably probably the most difficult road.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_01: Oh no, still water early, the most difficult road game if things are going the way they're going.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: But it's gonna be probably your second hardest road game on the on the map here.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: And we got them soon.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_03: Shout out, Big 12.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_03: How about you?
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: You good?
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: I'm good.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_01: Song of the week.
- 1:05:47SPEAKER_01: Let me hear it.
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_01: Song Song of the Week.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: Dude, I don't know.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_01: I was just I was in the truck with my coworkers today, and he threw on some pack green, and I was like, Dang.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: This is the Red Raider that started it all, man.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_01: Like, he is the OG with Texas, so with the red like Red Raider built Texas Country.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_01: So today I'm going to do a tribute to Pat Green.
- 1:06:12SPEAKER_01: And I'm going to go with Three Days by Pat Green.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_01: One of his biggest anthems, but a little uh little worm that gets in your ear that you can't get out once it crawls in.
- 1:06:24SPEAKER_01: So I'm going with Three Days by Pat Green.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_01: It's just a song about being on the road and coming back home.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: Just read it.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_04: I am not going to have the same kind of story that I gave last week with my song of the week.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_04: This was just a fun song that we did happen to listen to in Lovick, Texas, a couple weeks back.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_04: But uh one of our good friends shared it with me.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_04: Um and again, no real like theme here with anything going on, just kind of a jam of a song.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_04: Um My Song of the Week is John O'Reilly by Charlie Robison.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_04: Uh Bandera Rest in peace, you know.
- 1:07:16SPEAKER_04: Uh born in Houston, but kind of made his way in Bandera, uh, right outside of San Antonio.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_04: You know, an essay uh essay legend and uh died died too young, but this is a good song uh about an Irish guy who makes his way to the States, you know, makes a fortune for himself and then eventually heads back to Ireland.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_04: And it's just uh it's just a fun kind of uh ballad, you know, of a song uh going through it.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_04: And so that's my song of the week, John O'Reilly, Charlie Robison.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: Fairly well, fair over fairly well, your seasons turn.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_03: My pockets will be jingling on the day of my return.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_01: The day of my return.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_01: Great pick, man, and his brother is also quite the prominent Texas country singer as well.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: So, uh Bruce Robinson.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: So great pick, dude.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: Two letters of the Texas country scene here.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_04: Party, party, good old country music for the song of the week here on the Talking Tech.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: A little mix-up, a little different.
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_04: A little different here, you know.
- 1:08:21SPEAKER_04: You don't come to the Talking Tech podcast for just your basic whatever country music.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_04: You're not gonna get a you're not gonna get a Luke Bryan out of us.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: You know, you never hear Texas country picks up from us.
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_04: We're doing a little Charlie Robison, a little Pat Green.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_04: Come on now.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_01: Throwing it back, dude.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_04: All right, we're gonna end it off right here with some plugs, like we always do.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_04: You can follow both me and Tristan on Twitter.
