- 0:47This is Gracelyn Keller with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:50podcast, and we are live at the 2024
- 0:52payer issues roundtable.
- 0:54I'm currently joined by Anne Groves who serves
- 0:56as market president, Arcos
- 0:59Health. Anne, thank you for being here. Would
- 1:00love to have you start off by introducing
- 1:02yourself and telling us about your current role
- 1:04and organization.
- 1:06Hi. My name's Anne Groves. I am the
- 1:08market president for Illinois for Arcos Health. I'm
- 1:12also the chief medical officer in the market.
- 1:14We are a value based startup company.
- 1:17We take full risk on
- 1:20populations
- 1:21contracting with insurance companies
- 1:24to provide
- 1:26wraparound services outside of the hospital
- 1:29in order to drive down utilization
- 1:32costs.
- 1:33Our model is built on the idea that
- 1:37most health care
- 1:39is actually delivered at home
- 1:41and not in the hospital or clinic.
- 1:44And too many patients leave the doctor's office
- 1:48and then don't follow-up on care plans for
- 1:51whatever reason.
- 1:53Wonderful. Well, thank you for being here. And
- 1:56let's start our conversation
- 1:58with growth goals. So from improving member experience
- 2:02and expanding value based care to controlling costs,
- 2:05payer executives have ambitious growth goals for the
- 2:07rest of this year and looking ahead into
- 2:102025.
- 2:11So in your role, what is your top
- 2:12priority, and how are you planning to get
- 2:14there?
- 2:15So our top priority
- 2:17is member engagement.
- 2:19All of the challenges that you just described
- 2:23have this similar route.
- 2:26Patients don't understand
- 2:28why it's important for them to
- 2:32do all of the health care measures that
- 2:34we're asking of them. They don't understand why
- 2:36their annual exam matters.
- 2:38We have a Medicare Advantage population.
- 2:41Our members don't understand why they need to
- 2:43do their blood pressure screening, get their hemoglobin
- 2:46a one c checked, or any of the
- 2:48other HEDIS measures that play into
- 2:51the payers star ratings.
- 2:53So we need to get out and talk
- 2:56to our members 1 on 1
- 2:58in order to
- 3:01educate them and in order to get their
- 3:03cooperation.
- 3:05Absolutely.
- 3:06And going off of that at an industry
- 3:07level, how would you describe the biggest barriers
- 3:10to effectively serving and engaging members? And what
- 3:13opportunities do you see for large scale improvements
- 3:15and how you're applying these to your current
- 3:17strategies?
- 3:18So by far, the biggest barrier is data.
- 3:21This is a theme that I'm seeing over
- 3:23and over again here at Becker's.
- 3:25Data management is so very difficult.
- 3:28It's
- 3:30the root cause is the fact that data
- 3:32is coming from multiple different sources.
- 3:34These sources are not integrated.
- 3:37It is difficult to
- 3:40tell what is accurate
- 3:42in the data. And so
- 3:44the old maxim of garbage in garbage out
- 3:47applies. We've got to make sure that our
- 3:48data is
- 3:50trustworthy
- 3:50before we act on it.
- 3:53So
- 3:54we are
- 3:55concentrating
- 3:56on building out a platform where we can
- 3:59compile data from multiple different payers and then
- 4:03draw our own conclusions as to where we
- 4:05need to focus our attention.
- 4:08When we're looking at large scale improvements,
- 4:11we have to remember that health care is
- 4:13personal. So large scale improvements
- 4:16only come from engaging individual members.
- 4:20We are working on forms of outreach that
- 4:23actually get patients
- 4:25to communicate with us and where we can
- 4:28educate
- 4:30as to
- 4:32our case management services.
- 4:35And shifting gears slightly toward leadership growth. Keeping
- 4:38pace in today's dynamic health care landscape
- 4:51mission, and you have to remember your mission.
- 4:52You've got to keep also a mission. And
- 4:54you have to remember your mission. You've got
- 4:56to keep it front and center with everything
- 4:59you do. It is absolutely possible to make
- 5:02money in health care, but you can't forget
- 5:06why you're doing what you're doing.
- 5:10Absolutely.
- 5:11And is there anything else you'd like to
- 5:13share as a closing remark while we finish
- 5:15up the podcast here?
- 5:18So I am a physician by training. I'm
- 5:20a neonatologist.
- 5:22And
- 5:23one theme that I've seen over and over
- 5:25again is how very siloed
- 5:27health care is.
- 5:29We have 3 primary groups
- 5:32that needs to all interact with each other.
- 5:34We have our patient,
- 5:37our providers, and our payers.
- 5:39And what I'm seeing at the moment is
- 5:41that the silos don't interconnect
- 5:44at all.
- 5:45Even here at a big payer conference, the
- 5:47number of physicians I've seen
- 5:50who are
- 5:51practicing
- 5:52is so few. It's a little scary. We've
- 5:55got to have all the voices sitting at
- 5:57the same table.
- 5:59Otherwise,
- 6:00we're never gonna make the changes that we
- 6:02need to.
- 6:04Absolutely. Well, Anne, thank you for being here
- 6:06today and sharing your insights on the Becker's
- 6:08healthcare podcast. Again, we are recording live at
- 6:11the 2024 payer issues roundtable. It was my
- 6:14pleasure. Thank you.
