Latest / Gil I Am / Today In History PRESIDENT KENNEDY IS LAID TO REST (NOVEMBER 25, 1963) (NBC RADIO NETWORK COVERAGE)
Transcript
- 0:03Speaker 1: The NBC Radio Network has again today canceled regularly scheduled
- 0:07Speaker 1: programs to bring you continuous coverage on this the third
- 0:10Speaker 1: day of morning following the death of the late President
- 0:13Speaker 1: of the United States, John F.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Kennedy.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Now to Peter hackis at Arlington National Cemetery.
- 0:22Speaker 3: From our advantage point, located about fifty feet above the
- 0:29Speaker 3: site of the Kennedy grave, on a grassy slope just
- 0:32Speaker 3: below the Lee Mansion, we now begin to hear the
- 0:37Speaker 3: first strains of the marching band, the first unit, as
- 0:43Speaker 3: it winds its way into Arlington Cemetery. It was exactly
- 0:51Speaker 3: two weeks ago, another Monday, November eleventh, Armist to Stay,
- 0:56Speaker 3: that the fallen president last visited this memorial resting place
- 1:00Speaker 3: for the nation's heroes. On that day, not unlike this one, sunny, clear,
- 1:07Speaker 3: mister Kennedy placed a wreath at the tomb of the Unknowns,
- 1:12Speaker 3: the events of the last few days completely foreign to
- 1:14Speaker 3: his mind, although who knows what thoughts lurked in the
- 1:18Speaker 3: brain that day of the man who pulled the fateful trigger.
- 1:21Speaker 3: Even then, it's difficult to grasp the brutal fact in
- 1:28Speaker 3: this tragic irony that a man so alive and vigorous
- 1:32Speaker 3: as mister Kennedy that day as he praised America's war dead,
- 1:36Speaker 3: is now returning to Arlington suddenly to lie here with them.
- 1:44Speaker 2: The grave site.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Is perfectly located for this cemetery, as I said, on
- 1:54Speaker 3: a slope below the Lee Mansion. From my vantage point,
- 2:00Speaker 3: I look out over a part of the Arlington Cemetery,
- 2:06Speaker 3: then down across the Memorial Bridge to the Lincoln Memorial,
- 2:13Speaker 3: into Washington and beyond the Washington Monument, and of course
- 2:19Speaker 3: on Capitol Hill the Capitol Building. Whence mister Kennedy's remains
- 2:27Speaker 3: began this fateful trip earlier today, it's interesting to note
- 2:37Speaker 3: that no other graves are in the immediate vicinity of
- 2:44Speaker 3: the president's burial spot, perhaps an indication that for some
- 2:51Speaker 3: time at least this area uh will be reserved for
- 2:57Speaker 3: the many thousands and hundreds of thousands who visit Arlington
- 3:03Speaker 3: Cemetery each year, who henceforward will make the grave of
- 3:09Speaker 3: the late John F. Kennedy one of their more interesting,
- 3:18Speaker 3: not only a landmark, but a place where people from
- 3:23Speaker 3: all over the country, in fact all over the world,
- 3:26Speaker 3: may stop by and perhaps say a prayer, rededicate themselves, meditate,
- 3:35Speaker 3: and ponder the events of the day as they might
- 3:38Speaker 3: have been seen and might have been faced by this man.
- 3:44Speaker 3: The Arlington officials tell me that military men and their
- 3:54Speaker 3: wives and children are being buried here at the rate
- 3:58Speaker 3: of about twenty five a day. This is a fact
- 4:03Speaker 3: which has caused the officials to purchase more land for
- 4:08Speaker 3: the Arlington Cemetery periodically over the last several years. As
- 4:14Speaker 3: of today, one hundred twenty one thousand, four hundred twenty
- 4:18Speaker 3: eight persons have been buried in this four hundred twenty
- 4:22Speaker 3: acre cemetery. The best estimate is that at this rate
- 4:28Speaker 3: the cemetery will be filled by nineteen sixty w By
- 4:32Speaker 3: nineteen sixty eight, therefore, another undeveloped section number twenty nine
- 4:39Speaker 3: will be purchased, and that will accommodate burials till nineteen
- 4:45Speaker 3: seventy one. At that point, another two hundred two acre
- 4:49Speaker 3: plot will be added, which will take Arlington at least
- 4:54Speaker 3: in the present figuring until nineteen eighty seven. It's interesting
- 5:00Speaker 3: that only one other presidential commander in chief of the
- 5:04Speaker 3: Armed Forces is buried here, William Howard Taft, also a
- 5:10Speaker 3: former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, who was interred
- 5:14Speaker 3: here in Arlington in nineteen thirty. The Kennedy family, of course,
- 5:22Speaker 3: obviously felt that not only was it an honor to
- 5:29Speaker 3: be buried in Arlington, not only was mister Kennedy fully
- 5:34Speaker 3: and completely qualified because of his naval service and his
- 5:38Speaker 3: chores as commander in Chief, but also as a tribute
- 5:44Speaker 3: to the people he served, be they military or not,
- 5:49Speaker 3: and deliberately making the decision to lay him to rest
- 5:55Speaker 3: here at Arlington rather than the family plot in Massachusetts,
- 6:02Speaker 3: which had been thought at first. This unselfish move on
- 6:08Speaker 3: the part of the Kennedy family, approved of course by
- 6:11Speaker 3: Missus Kennedy, will go far, I'm sure, in the years
- 6:16Speaker 3: to come, to allow the American people to partake better
- 6:27Speaker 3: the memory of the late President. Very slowly now, the
- 6:33Speaker 3: funeral cortege is literally winding its way up the hill
- 6:38Speaker 3: toward the final resting place. It is a hill, a
- 6:42Speaker 3: rather steep one. Below me, as I look down at
- 6:49Speaker 3: the gravesite, the members of the Irish Honor Guard are
- 6:57Speaker 3: standing in front of me, preparing to go through the
- 7:06Speaker 3: manual which they will perform as part of the burial ceremony.
- 7:13Speaker 3: These hand picked troops are from the Irish Military Officer's Academy,
- 7:20Speaker 3: and we're flown here at the request of Missus Kennedy.
- 7:27Speaker 3: Surrounding the place where the casket will rest when it
- 7:33Speaker 3: reaches here, the officials of Arlington have laid, as is traditional,
- 7:41Speaker 3: a false imitation grass plot made of paper grass. It
- 7:49Speaker 3: becomes a very grassy green in contrast to the brown
- 7:55Speaker 3: of the grass in the surrounding area. As being November
- 7:59Speaker 3: here in Arlington, the first marching unit of the funeral
- 8:04Speaker 3: Cortege has now moved into sight, the colorful Marine Band
- 8:10Speaker 3: with their bright red tunics, their dark blue pants with
- 8:16Speaker 3: the red stripe down the side.
- 8:27Speaker 2: They are followed.
- 8:31Speaker 3: By the honor guard units of the various military services.
- 8:44Speaker 3: The slow beat of the drums one hundred paces to
- 8:52Speaker 3: the minute traditional in this type of ceremonial. The casket
- 9:07Speaker 3: being born aboard the caisson has not yet come into
- 9:11Speaker 3: view around the corner and down the hill, but it
- 9:16Speaker 3: will very shortly. This is the so called memorial area
- 9:25Speaker 3: of the cemetery, directly in front of the Custous Lee House,
- 9:29Speaker 3: the original manor of the George Washington Park Custis Estate,
- 9:34Speaker 3: which as you know, formed the nucleus of Arlington Cemetery.
- 9:40Speaker 3: The grave site lies in a direct line between the
- 9:46Speaker 3: flag pole in front of the Lee Mansion and the
- 9:48Speaker 3: Memorial gate, and as I said, there are no other
- 9:53Speaker 3: graves in the immediate vicinity. The Marine band, only drums
- 10:01Speaker 3: being played, of course, is now pulling up a breast
- 10:07Speaker 3: of the grave site. The honor guard units the Army
- 10:16Speaker 3: of the Navy, the Air Force and the Coast Guard,
- 10:23Speaker 3: followed by a unit of Marines, are following the Marine band,
- 10:30Speaker 3: which has just now stopped. The estimate of the crowd
- 10:39Speaker 3: here at Arlington today has ranged all the way from
- 10:43Speaker 3: thirty to fifty thousand. Uh. I'm a poor crowd estimator,
- 10:50Speaker 3: but it's safe to say that every possible nook and
- 10:54Speaker 3: cranny where people are allowed to be is filled with
- 10:58Speaker 3: spectators hungry for a final glimpse of the departed president.
- 11:09Speaker 3: The limousines burying the Kennedy family and the various other
- 11:17Speaker 3: dignitaries are now coming around the same corner up the hill.
- 11:26Speaker 3: They are now in sight, as is the black draped
- 11:31Speaker 3: casson with the casket and its American flag draped over it.
- 11:43Speaker 2: There are.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Six chairs covered with green material next to the grave,
- 11:57Speaker 3: waiting for the Kennedy fa and those taking part in
- 12:03Speaker 3: the burial services slowly. Now, although the drum beat has stopped,
- 12:11Speaker 3: the limousines continue to come abreast of the grave site,
- 12:18Speaker 3: and the distinguished guests and officials are beginning to walk
- 12:26Speaker 3: up the gentle slope from the road to the grave site.
- 12:37Speaker 3: The caisson is moving slowly that the horses calm. Actually,
- 12:55Speaker 3: the riderless horse, the single black horse symbolic is acting
- 13:04Speaker 3: up just a wee bit, as he has from time
- 13:07Speaker 3: to time to day, but he seems to be There
- 13:12Speaker 3: seems to be no difficulty with it. The members of
- 13:17Speaker 3: the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
- 13:22Speaker 2: Are here, and in just a moment the.
- 13:29Speaker 3: Casson will draw abreast of the short path that leads
- 13:36Speaker 3: from the road to the grave site. The funeral procession
- 13:47Speaker 3: has proceeded through a joint honor cordon to the dismount
- 13:52Speaker 3: point of the grave side. The casson is just about
- 14:00Speaker 3: to halt.
- 14:02Speaker 2: They remember to moving back the way you move?
- 14:05Speaker 4: What bid one?
- 14:14Speaker 3: At this moment, the cars have almost all reached the
- 14:22Speaker 3: point of deparking their important passengers. The casson has stopped
- 14:38Speaker 3: at the path.
- 14:40Speaker 4: What did goo?
- 14:45Speaker 3: The body bearers, also made up of an honor guard
- 14:50Speaker 3: of the military men standing at strict attention on the
- 14:58Speaker 3: road surrounding the casson, preparing to.
- 15:06Speaker 2: Lift it off and carry it.
- 15:11Speaker 3: Lovingly from the road up the path to the graveside.
- 15:29Speaker 3: The crowd here at the cemetery, as have been the
- 15:33Speaker 3: crowds all day, is completely silent, a hushed crowd, not
- 15:43Speaker 3: a noise, out of respect and perhaps in contemplation of
- 15:54Speaker 3: the enormously tragic events of the last couple of days.
- 16:09Speaker 3: As MSUs Kennedy leaves the limousine, you will hear again
- 16:15Speaker 3: the traditional ruffles and flourishes, followed by the star spangled banner.
- 16:25Speaker 3: At that point, the US Air Force bagpipe band will
- 16:31Speaker 3: sound off and the casket will be removed from the caisson.
- 16:43Speaker 3: As the bagpipes move over the hill, the funeral party
- 16:49Speaker 3: will be led up the hill between a column of
- 16:55Speaker 3: Special Forces soldiers dressed in there now traditional berets and
- 17:05Speaker 3: combat boots. A lengthy double line of black limousines has
- 17:18Speaker 3: now stopped. It stretches perhaps six or eight blocks down
- 17:30Speaker 3: the hill from this grave side, and those diplomats other VIPs.
- 17:43Speaker 2: Who rode here in.
- 17:44Speaker 3: Them are now slowly moving up the hill on foot
- 17:51Speaker 3: to assemble at graveside. The members of the Irish Honor Guard,
- 18:04Speaker 3: sharply attired in writing breeches, olive drab jackets and high
- 18:14Speaker 3: brown leather boots, seem each man to be engaged in
- 18:22Speaker 3: solemn thought at this moment, remembering no doubt the visit
- 18:30Speaker 3: to their land recently by the late President. At this moment,
- 18:47Speaker 3: the Kennedy family is moving toward the gravesite, and here
- 18:53Speaker 3: you have ruffles and flourishes SA Following the playing of
- 20:19Speaker 3: the national anthem the Air Force bagpipes, the members of
- 20:44Speaker 3: the Air Force Bagpipe Band playing a funeral dirge, are
- 20:52Speaker 3: moving very very slowly in measured steps toward the grave side.
- 20:59Speaker 3: And at this moment the casket is being removed from
- 21:03Speaker 3: the case on Missus Kennedy standing just beside, looking on.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Sadly.
- 21:13Speaker 3: One can see the expression on her face through the
- 21:17Speaker 3: thin black veil of her face. The casket now is
- 21:27Speaker 3: being carried up the path toward the graveside. When the
- 21:54Speaker 3: casket has been placed on graveside, the bag pipers will
- 22:01Speaker 3: stop their music and the mourners will be motioned to
- 22:09Speaker 3: their various positions around the graveside. When they're in position,
- 22:17Speaker 3: the Irish Guard will then perform their military manual. Ever
- 22:37Speaker 3: so slowly, the casket is being carried the one hundred
- 22:48Speaker 3: feet from the side of the road.
- 22:52Speaker 2: To the freshly dug.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Grave through the guard of owner of Special Forces soldiers.
- 23:07Speaker 3: Leading the slow procession is a military honor guard of
- 23:17Speaker 3: three carrying the American flag. There follow several church dignitaries
- 23:38Speaker 3: who will take part in the burial service. Indirectly behind them,
- 23:46Speaker 3: moving at a very slow pace, the military guard of
- 23:54Speaker 3: eight men.
- 23:57Speaker 2: Is bearing.
- 23:59Speaker 3: The heavy bronze casket draped.
- 24:06Speaker 2: In its American flag.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Behind the casket the President's personal flag, and after that
- 24:17Speaker 3: the members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, followed by
- 24:24Speaker 3: the grieving Kennedy family, Missus Kennedy walking in the center
- 24:31Speaker 3: of the path, holding tight to.
- 24:35Speaker 2: The arm and hand of.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Her brother in law, the Attorney General, and flanked on
- 24:42Speaker 3: the other side by Senator Edward Kennedy.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Overhead. At this moment.
- 24:48Speaker 5: A fly by, as you've heard, fifty Air Force Fight aerplanes,
- 25:16Speaker 5: one for each of the nation's fifty states, has streaked
- 25:20Speaker 5: across the blue sky here over the grave site.
- 25:23Speaker 3: The casket has reached the grave site. The honor guard
- 25:28Speaker 3: has now begun folding the American flag Missus Kennedy is seated,
- 25:38Speaker 3: as are the members of the Kennedy family in five
- 25:46Speaker 3: seats immediately adjacent to the grave site, watching the sad ceremony.
- 26:08Speaker 3: The flag now has been raised and is being held
- 26:13Speaker 3: by the eight military men, four on each side of
- 26:18Speaker 3: the casket. It is being held over the casket. It
- 26:23Speaker 3: cannot be like as the Irish on her guard goes
- 26:28Speaker 3: through its manual arms. Missus Kennedy, now standing with her
- 26:34Speaker 3: brother in law, the Attorney General, has moved forward.
- 26:39Speaker 2: She has.
- 26:42Speaker 3: Moved to within three or four feet of the bronze casket,
- 26:49Speaker 3: her veil gently blowing in this breeze. Her two sisters,
- 26:59Speaker 3: Missus Smith and Missus Shriver, standing close by other members
- 27:06Speaker 3: of the Kennedy family. Some of the children of Robert
- 27:11Speaker 3: Kennedy also here, although Caroline and John Junior are not present.
- 27:18Speaker 3: A number of dignitaries are now moving into their pre
- 27:23Speaker 3: assigned positions to Missus Kennedy's right. Included, of course, in
- 27:31Speaker 3: the front row is President to Go of France, Heilely Selassie.
- 27:49Speaker 3: The Emperor of Ethiopia, is also in the front row,
- 27:56Speaker 3: wearing a green and gold sash over his black military uniform.
- 28:07Speaker 3: Representatives from more than fifty nations are here at the
- 28:16Speaker 3: s service. Senator Edward Kennedy has stepped back just a bit.
- 28:28Speaker 3: He is now behind the row of chairs. At this
- 28:36Speaker 3: point the chaplain will bless the grave and continue with
- 28:42Speaker 3: prayers at the grave side. Toward the end of his prayers,
- 28:48Speaker 3: the troops will be brought to present arms, and the
- 28:51Speaker 3: twenty one gun salute will be sounded.
- 29:03Speaker 6: The doors of the baseball fine rest. He pleased to
- 29:10Speaker 6: bless distray and my holy angels to keep it. I
- 29:19Speaker 6: lout storm the body we bury here in. I love,
- 29:26Speaker 6: oh my loved got canny good heady p president of

- 29:58Speaker 6: it and watch the ret ten turn off his feet
- 30:01Speaker 6: from him. I praise up a horness doll at Jim

- 31:05Speaker 6: give knowledge your salvation, and beat for unto the meeton
- 31:11Speaker 6: of their skins. To the Lord. Tell the mesty of
- 31:15Speaker 6: God in which the case things from man eye has visited.
- 31:20Speaker 6: Ull going light than them, that in a artness and
- 31:25Speaker 6: in the good of a death, you direct our peace
- 31:29Speaker 6: into the way of peace. He ty a rect shine
- 31:34Speaker 6: unjhim a lord, and that perpets you a light shine
- 31:39Speaker 6: upon him. I am the resurrection and the light. He
- 31:44Speaker 6: who believe that in me, although he be dead, shall live.
- 31:49Speaker 6: And everyone who liver than believe bet in me, shall
- 31:54Speaker 6: not die forever. But I'm mercy on us right down
- 32:00Speaker 6: the honest God, have mercy honors.
- 32:06Speaker 7: H foo Lord, and I'm an all of be thy name.
- 32:09Speaker 6: Nikeing them come night, and he in his desires did,

- 32:30Speaker 6: of the fatfall here below. I mercy may make him
- 32:35Speaker 6: the companion of the holy angels in heaven through Christ
- 32:41Speaker 6: do Lord payment.
- 32:47Speaker 3: Cardinal Cushing now has completed the prayers, and in a
- 32:51Speaker 3: moment he will hear three volleys of musketry, to be
- 32:55Speaker 3: followed by taps.
- 33:00Speaker 2: Like some twenty one guns to look.
- 34:55Speaker 3: That, of course, was the traditional twenty one gun salute.
- 35:00Speaker 3: At this point, the chaplain now completes the prayers at
- 35:05Speaker 3: the gravesite.
- 35:06Speaker 6: Oh, when they have a little bit a patal will
- 35:09Speaker 6: be on.
- 35:10Speaker 7: Ay ay dent me he goin on right grind on,
- 35:18Speaker 7: doing him all and all on'em, and all them, all
- 35:23Speaker 7: of 'em e where they montadjo im a me of God.
- 35:27Speaker 7: Dent came in.
- 35:29Speaker 3: Now we will hear these three volleys of musketry, to
- 35:38Speaker 3: be followed by the traditional playing of taps.
- 35:45Speaker 8: And.
- 35:47Speaker 6: Do them all they go came in our barn, the
- 35:50Speaker 6: harder them, and all of be Thine name night gat
- 35:53Speaker 6: them gone night.
- 35:54Speaker 7: Meeting me down on earth.
- 35:55Speaker 6: Now that he's in Harban.
- 35:58Speaker 1: Right under about this group of give you a lord's
- 36:00Speaker 1: dresses against us, that you can make it an adititation
- 36:03Speaker 1: whatever y.
- 36:04Speaker 7: Yeah, marry full of grace.
- 36:06Speaker 6: The Lord is with deed, blood and not down among
- 36:09Speaker 6: women and blood.
- 36:10Speaker 7: That is the fruit that I'm on.
- 36:12Speaker 6: He done, join rights, grind out him all. He is all,
- 36:21Speaker 6: and the doors of all of aidful of bodies to
- 36:24Speaker 6: the mescy of God, rest in him, and a bard
- 36:28Speaker 6: that's done while he goes him.
- 36:30Speaker 3: And at this point, Robert Kennedy has brought Missus Jacqueline
- 36:45Speaker 3: Kennedy to a position directly in front of the casket
- 36:52Speaker 3: and next to it.
- 37:11Speaker 8: F F.
- 37:35Speaker 2: F O. At this point, with Missus Kennedy still standing
- 38:22Speaker 2: at the.
- 38:24Speaker 3: End of the casket and very close to it, Cardinal
- 38:29Speaker 3: Cushing has leaned forward touched the shoulder of Senator Edward Kennedy.
- 38:38Speaker 3: There's a conversation between him and the Attorney General. Now
- 38:44Speaker 3: the Cardinal speaks briefly with Missus Kennedy. At this moment,
- 39:00Speaker 3: the military honor guard begins to fold the flag which
- 39:08Speaker 3: has draped the casket of the late president in prescribed
- 39:15Speaker 3: military fashion.
- 39:19Speaker 2: The folding almost completed.
- 39:24Speaker 3: After the flag has been folded, the body bearers then
- 39:29Speaker 3: will move from the graveside, and the chaplain will bless
- 39:38Speaker 3: the eternal flame which is to be lighted here at
- 39:42Speaker 3: the grave side during the burial ceremony by Missus Kennedy.
- 40:00Speaker 7: The Lord made heaven on earth. The Lord be with
- 41:17Speaker 7: you and with your spirit. And I spray, Oh God,
- 41:25Speaker 7: by whose word all.
- 41:27Speaker 6: Things are made holy. Or down thy blessing on this
- 41:33Speaker 6: light which thou hast created and grant, and however, giving
- 41:40Speaker 6: thanks to thee, uses it in accordance.
- 41:45Speaker 7: With thy loora.
- 41:46Speaker 6: And I will ay by calling upon my holy name
- 41:53Speaker 6: received you I else the body protects them all go
- 42:02Speaker 6: iron gray, the.
- 42:04Speaker 7: Ball off, and no way all uh one of them
- 42:11Speaker 7: mine on we buried to day the end of the
- 42:16Speaker 7: bard of the done them.
- 42:17Speaker 4: When he goes thing.
- 42:23Speaker 2: The flag.
- 42:24Speaker 3: The American flag has now been handed to Missus Kennedy,
- 42:30Speaker 3: who receives it. She will, now, in a moment, after
- 42:41Speaker 3: a final silent prayer, a last look, move away. She
- 42:52Speaker 3: bends over toward the casket and lights the eternal flo.
- 43:02Speaker 2: With a torch. Robert Kennedy bends down and takes part
- 43:12Speaker 2: as well.
- 43:14Speaker 3: And now the president's youngest brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, does similarly,
- 43:22Speaker 3: and the eternal flame is lighted. Now with heavy heart
- 43:37Speaker 3: and slow step, Missus Kennedy showing even through her veil,
- 43:44Speaker 3: the strain of the day's ordeal has turned away. She's
- 43:53Speaker 3: chatting for a moment with the Attorney General. Now she
- 43:58Speaker 3: moves back again. She comes over personally, greets members of
- 44:04Speaker 3: the Joint chief of Staff, kisses General Maxwell Taylor, a
- 44:11Speaker 3: long time personal friend, then moves slowly away, hand in
- 44:17Speaker 3: hand with her brother in law, Attorney General Robert Kennedy,
- 44:24Speaker 3: through the crowd of dignitaries.
- 44:28Speaker 2: Toward.
- 44:30Speaker 3: Their waiting limousine. Vice President, or rather the new President,
- 44:42Speaker 3: Lyndon Johnson, is now moving away from the squared off area,
- 44:51Speaker 3: joining the procession of diplomatic and clerical dignitaries.
- 44:59Speaker 2: Moving away from the grave site.
- 45:03Speaker 3: The honor guard standing st stock still, and that rigid
- 45:08Speaker 3: attention on either side of the casket, the casket.
- 45:16Speaker 2: Plainly visible a bronze.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Polished behind it in front of our advantage point. The
- 45:29Speaker 3: members of the Joint chiefs of Staff are standing also
- 45:33Speaker 3: at attention, and the ceremony, to all intents and purposes,
- 45:44Speaker 3: is over. Thus for Missus Jacqueline Kennedy, the most difficult
- 45:52Speaker 3: day in a series of tragic days, is drawing to
- 45:59Speaker 3: it inevitable clothes. The former First Lady, heart deeply grieving,
- 46:09Speaker 3: has turned from a last long look at the caskets
- 46:15Speaker 3: bearing the remains of her husband, John F. Kennedy, has
- 46:22Speaker 3: been laid to rest.
- 46:28Speaker 8: Continuing NBC's memorial coverage of the late President John Fitzgerald Kennedy,
- 46:34Speaker 8: here is Morgan be d.
- 46:37Speaker 9: Today was the day they said farewell all around the world,
- 46:43Speaker 9: and now we cover the only member of the Kennedy
- 46:47Speaker 9: family unaccounted for in Washington and at Arlington Cemetery. We
- 46:52Speaker 9: take you to Jim Jensen in Highness Sport for a
- 46:56Speaker 9: report on Joseph Kennedy.
- 47:00Speaker 4: In the past eighteen hours, numerous rumors and reports of
- 47:03Speaker 4: the serious illness or death of the late President Kennedy's father,
- 47:07Speaker 4: Ambassador Justice P. Kennedy. These rumors and reports are all erroneous.
- 47:12Speaker 4: As far as I could find out today, the Ambassador,
- 47:15Speaker 4: who could not, because of his invalid condition, attend his
- 47:18Speaker 4: son's funeral in Washington, is quite well. We talked a
- 47:22Speaker 4: short time ago to his niece, Miss Ann Gargan, who
- 47:25Speaker 4: was staying with him in his home at Hyenna's Port.
- 47:28Speaker 4: Miss Gargan said that upon rising this morning, the Ambassador
- 47:31Speaker 4: attended a private mass held for him by Father John Cavanaugh.
- 47:36Speaker 4: She said too that shortly after ten o'clock this morning,
- 47:39Speaker 4: the Ambassador, along with Father Kavanaugh, Miss Gargan and his chauffeur,
- 47:43Speaker 4: took a forty minute drive through the Hyenna's business district,
- 47:46Speaker 4: looking at the flags at half mast and the people
- 47:49Speaker 4: headed for the numerous memorial services. In addition to the riot,
- 47:53Speaker 4: the Ambassador, who has had some difficulties speaking because of
- 47:57Speaker 4: his stroke, talked with a friend on the telephone. The
- 48:00Speaker 4: call did not come from Washington, and also, according to
- 48:03Speaker 4: Miss Gargan, he did not watch any television this morning,
- 48:07Speaker 4: but he did last night observe for some time the
- 48:10Speaker 4: lines of mourners passing by his son's beer in the
- 48:12Speaker 4: capital rotunda. He remained calm throughout. Miss Gargan said too
- 48:17Speaker 4: that she expected he would have watched the funeral services
- 48:21Speaker 4: on television this afternoon, and during the funeral service we've
- 48:24Speaker 4: just learned this afternoon, Ambassador Kennedy took his daily required
- 48:28Speaker 4: period of immersion in the heated pool. He came out
- 48:32Speaker 4: of the pool around three o'clock this afternoon. It must
- 48:35Speaker 4: be pointed out too, that it was with great reluctance
- 48:38Speaker 4: that we disturbed Miss Gargan with our queries on the
- 48:41Speaker 4: sorrowful day. But it was thought that because of the
- 48:44Speaker 4: rumors about the death of Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy circulating
- 48:48Speaker 4: around the nation, that it would be for the best
- 48:51Speaker 4: interests of all concerns to seek the truth. We expect
- 48:55Speaker 4: this accounting of his days activities today will serve to
- 48:58Speaker 4: stop the rumors of his to mind. Ambassador Kennedy is
- 49:02Speaker 4: now as well as any father can be on the
- 49:05Speaker 4: day his son is buried. Jim Jensen reporting from Hyennis.
- 49:11Speaker 9: And now for the events in Washington following the funeral
- 49:15Speaker 9: of the President, we switch you to Russ Ward in Washington, Morgan.
- 49:22Speaker 8: The story here right now is one of a diplomatic
- 49:26Speaker 8: reception at the White House, scores, actually hundreds of diplomats
- 49:33Speaker 8: arriving one at a time, two three foreign groups, limousines
- 49:38Speaker 8: pulling up continually at the Executive Mansion. The greeter on
- 49:42Speaker 8: the north portico William Tones, the Deputy Chief of Protocol
- 49:47Speaker 8: at the State Department, shaking hands occasionally. The diplomats arriv
- 49:52Speaker 8: wiping tears from their eyes, still overcome with grief from
- 49:56Speaker 8: the assassination on Friday, in the dramatic funeral procession that
- 50:00Speaker 8: occurred earlier this afternoon, it's still quiet here. I flew
- 50:09Speaker 8: down from New York earlier this afternoon, and the plane
- 50:13Speaker 8: actually flew over Arlington National Cemetery where the.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Funeral took place.
- 50:22Speaker 8: You could, even from an altitude of perhaps five thousand feet,
- 50:27Speaker 8: you could look down and see the ribbons of black
- 50:30Speaker 8: lining Memorial Bridge, of course, the ribbons being spectators waiting,
- 50:37Speaker 8: standing quietly watching as the funeral procession was to come by.
- 50:42Speaker 8: A few moments later, the plane landed and I drove
- 50:49Speaker 8: up what many of our listeners, I'm sure no as
- 50:53Speaker 8: a beautiful drive along the Potomac River, the Mount Vernon
- 50:56Speaker 8: Memorial Parkway, and all along the parkway on both sides
- 51:06Speaker 8: cars parked five six deep, people who had left their
- 51:17Speaker 8: cars there early this morning to walk oh perhaps half
- 51:25Speaker 8: a mile up to Memorial Bridge. The Arlington National Cemetery,
- 51:30Speaker 8: of course, was closed to the public, but these people
- 51:37Speaker 8: wanting to get a final glimpse of the funeral procession.
- 51:46Speaker 8: It was a thoroughly touching moment, and I couldn't help
- 51:53Speaker 8: but feel at the time, as I joined the crowd
- 51:59Speaker 8: going toward Word Memorial Bridge, that we've seen another day
- 52:06Speaker 8: of history made, but it'll be a long time before
- 52:11Speaker 8: we forget it.
