- 0:00Ryan: a R-rated film.
- 0:02ladies and gentlemen, we're talking
- 0:03Jon: Hold on.
- 0:03Intros, buddy.
- 0:05Intros, buddy.
- 0:06Intros.
- 0:08Slow your roll there, champ.
- 0:10This week on Xenomania, two hapless employees of the You Need A Medical
- 0:16Supply warehouse inadvertently open a tank containing 2-4-5 trioxin gas.
- 0:23Immediately, some of the inventory in the warehouse comes to life,
- 0:27so a call to the owner is made.
- 0:30Unfortunately, the boss's solution only makes matters worse.
- 0:35Meanwhile, a group of young people are partying the night away in
- 0:39a cemetery when a toxic rain begins to fall and the dead rise.
- 0:45You think this is an effing costume?
- 0:47This is a way of life.
- 0:49This is Return of the Living Dead.
- 0:52This is Xenomania
- 1:09Ryan: Favorite movie, John.
- 1:11I'm just gonna shout it out
- 1:12Jon: This is number two.
- 1:14This is
- 1:14Kearns: all
- 1:14Jon: number two.
- 1:15Ryan: one?
- 1:16Jon: Dawn
- 1:18Kearns: Yeah, that one
- 1:19Jon: Dawn.
- 1:20Dawn of the Dead, then Return.
- 1:23And then
- 1:24Ryan: that's fair
- 1:24Jon: I won't spoil later on, but this is gonna score very highly
- 1:30Kearns: Yeah, I'm sure.
- 1:31Return of the Living Dead is, might be the most '80s movie that's ever movied.
- 1:39I think it, it knocks off Crocodile Dundee at this
- 1:41Jon: Ooh
- 1:46Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:47Yeah
- 1:48Ryan: I don't know.
- 1:49Uh,
- 1:49Kearns: That
- 1:51Ryan: this is like prime.
- 1:53This came out in August, so this is like right after like we got
- 1:57a lot of big movements going on.
- 1:59We got the wrestling/rocking connection, we got big movies,
- 2:02and then Return of the Living Dead
- 2:04Jon: All movements
- 2:06Ryan: But yeah, I mean, you get everything just together, and Return of
- 2:11the Living Dead sh- does it well with like punk, you know, the heavy metal,
- 2:17the hair metal, like the zombie lore.
- 2:20You know, even adapting their own version, it's just, it works.
- 2:25And it brings not only like audiences who love like George Romero's zombie
- 2:30films, but it brings in a new audience.
- 2:33it was like it, for that time, I feel like it was cool, it was hip, it was colorful.
- 2:38Like, brought something new to the table
- 2:42Kearns: Yeah, definitely.
- 2:44Jon: And it, it brought trash dancing naked in a cemetery
- 2:48Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say it's edgy.
- 2:50It's certainly edgy.
- 2:51But they go for that, like, grungy '80s, '80s, um, punk vibe and
- 2:57it… real hard, and it works.
- 2:59It
- 2:59Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:01Yeah, I mean that authentic '80s right there with the, at least
- 3:05with the punk part of it, you know?
- 3:08The over, over the top.
- 3:10I mean, like, some of s- um, Self Harm's costume is a little over the top.
- 3:17I don't know that we… We can't really say that character's name, can we?
- 3:21Kearns: I don't know.
- 3:22I don't think so,
- 3:23Jon: I think we're just gonna have to call him Self Harm all night.
- 3:27Ryan: Yeah.
- 3:28Jon: Which is kind of funny.
- 3:30Kearns: the chain to the fish hook into the mouth
- 3:33Jon: Mm-hmm
- 3:34Kearns: pretty ridiculous.
- 3:35the costuming in this movie is out of control.
- 3:38And
- 3:38Jon: Yeah
- 3:38Kearns: girl who's, like, just looks like a normal '80s girl from, you
- 3:42know, any sort of TV show, just with that group, which is pretty funny too.
- 3:48Jon: Tina.
- 3:48Kearns: her name.
- 3:49Enyo?
- 3:50Ryan: Oh,
- 3:50Kearns: No, it's Enyo
- 3:52Ryan: But you had, like, familiar faces, right?
- 3:54You had Miguel A. Nunez Jr.,
- 3:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 3:57Ryan: a lot of, like, TV shows and he was in quite a few slashers at that time.
- 4:01Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:03Ryan: who was the other guy?
- 4:04Uh, Don Calfa, who we saw in Poltergeist.
- 4:07Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 4:07Ryan: think Poltergeist came after, but… No,
- 4:11Jon: Poltergeist was before, yeah.
- 4:13Ja-
- 4:13Ryan: we saw hi-
- 4:14Jon: you got James Karen who was in a bunch of stuff, Clu
- 4:17Gulliger, who was just, is sort of just becoming a Hollywood star.
- 4:21He'd been, done a lot of TV and a lot of Westerns.
- 4:24But we'll get to that shortly.
- 4:26Guys, one of my favorite parts about Return of Living Dead is the soundtrack
- 4:31Kearns: It's good
- 4:32Ryan: Are you gonna ask us our favorite movie soundtracks?
- 4:35Jon: Of course I'm going to, but for, one, one thing I wanna point
- 4:39out, one of the songs on the Return of the Living Dead soundtrack that
- 4:42everybody thinks is a fun song is the most, the most brutal story ever.
- 4:49And it, the par- the Party Time song, I'm not gonna go into it
- 4:53because it's a super, super downer.
- 4:56Go Google Party Time, and that's, that song is not a party time
- 5:02Kearns: Oh, wow
- 5:03Ryan: a fun song when you're, like, a minute 45 on, 'cause you get to the rift,
- 5:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 5:10Ryan: does, like, has, like, the party time lyrics.
- 5:12But the whole song is very depressing,
- 5:15Jon: Yeah.
- 5:16Yeah.
- 5:17And it
- 5:18Ryan: story.
- 5:20It's
- 5:20Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:21Ryan: which is
- 5:22Jon: Yeah, that the, the woman that wrote it, like, saw the story on, like,
- 5:26a, a true crime thing or something or read an article about it and
- 5:30then turned it into a song, so yeah.
- 5:33And you also get, a Roky Erickson song on this one too as, um, Frank is putting
- 5:39himself into the, into the crematorium.
- 5:41That's Roky Erickson there, and Roky Erickson is so cool.
- 5:45He's like, um, he's like psychedelic rock but with a guy who really has
- 5:51schizophrenia writing and singing.
- 5:54So it's, like, super psychedelic
- 5:58Ryan: Burn the flames.
- 5:59Jon: Yeah.
- 6:00Ryan: Okay
- 6:01Jon: Yeah.
- 6:03So anyway, roundabout way of getting to what's your, what's your
- 6:06favorite movie soundtracks, guys?
- 6:09Ryan: Batman Forever.
- 6:11Fir- first off,
- 6:12Kearns: He says this unironically, which is my favorite part about it.
- 6:16Jon: Is that the
- 6:17Kearns: gonna go with ridiculous ones, but he, he said Batman Forever
- 6:20Ryan: hold up, there's two of them.
- 6:21Batman Forever is definitely one.
- 6:23I, I was a kid, I saw it in the theaters, just hearing, like, Seal's
- 6:27Kearns: Yeah, I was gonna say seal.
- 6:29Oh, fuck
- 6:30Ryan: U2 Thrill Me, Kiss Me.
- 6:32Like,
- 6:33Kearns: This is getting clipped out for social media.
- 6:35This is definitely getting spread around the world
- 6:38Ryan: I, I'm, I'm not ashamed.
- 6:40Batman Forever, and then soundtrack of The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.
- 6:45Not only the main title theme,
- 6:46Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:47Ryan: En- Ennio
- 6:51Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 6:51Ryan: job conducting.
- 6:53And the thing is, is the opening theme hooks you, what gets you
- 6:58is, like, right close to the end and you have the Ecstasy of Gold,
- 7:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 7:02Ryan: leads into, like, the Mexican standoff.
- 7:06music is just, ah, superb.
- 7:10I messed up his name, didn't I?
- 7:11Jon: No, you're, you're ballpark.
- 7:13Kearns: It
- 7:14Jon: You're ballpark.
- 7:15I, I, I, um, I wanna give you, I wanna give you a little
- 7:18Ecstasy of Gold story, though.
- 7:20So,
- 7:21Ryan: Ooh, okay
- 7:22Jon: aside from being Metallica's intro music for 30-plus years
- 7:27now, this was the song I walked down the aisle to 13 years ago
- 7:34Yep.
- 7:35Ryan: song.
- 7:37Jon: Yep.
- 7:37Ryan: great
- 7:37Jon: We had a, we had a, an, a live guitarist play this and, um, I can't
- 7:44remember the name of Alison's song.
- 7:45It was a Sade song, but I can't remember what it's called right now.
- 7:49It's not Ordinary Love.
- 7:51Ryan: Okay.
- 7:52Jon: It's not that one.
- 7:53It's something, it's another one that's escaping me right now.
- 7:57S-
- 7:57Ryan: But
- 7:58Jon: so a wes-
- 7:59Ryan: goal
- 8:00Jon: a western and Seal, Ryan.
- 8:03Kearns: Yeah
- 8:03Jon: we're going?
- 8:04Okay
- 8:05Ryan: actually a spaghetti Western.
- 8:07Kearns: I'm gonna s-
- 8:08Ryan: Western and seal
- 8:09Kearns: that's the, the pretty much the only types that Clint Eastwood
- 8:12made, the spaghetti Westerns.
- 8:15Um, so we've got, we're going ridiculous.
- 8:17So we're gonna start off with Rocky IV.
- 8:23Listen to that soundtrack and try not to run
- 8:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 8:26Mm-hmm
- 8:27Kearns: Is it?
- 8:28It needs to be.
- 8:30Jon: And, and they, and you lived in America and…
- 8:33Kearns: in a…
- 8:34Yeah, James Brown's on that bad boy.
- 8:36So that one's actually, one's actually, it really doesn't fit in
- 8:39the ridiculous one, 'cause that's actually a damn good soundtrack.
- 8:44But,
- 8:44Ryan: a really good soundtrack
- 8:45Kearns: uh, Mortal Kombat, the original movie soundtrack, just also ridiculous.
- 8:52And like a lot of people had it.
- 8:54They won't admit to it now, but there were a lot of Discmans with that
- 8:57soundtrack in it with kids just like with thousand yard stares, just like so yeah.
- 9:04That was going on.
- 9:05And, um, we're gonna go with the worst of them.
- 9:09The worst one I could think of that I had, I got it for free at a Hot Topic, well,
- 9:14from… Like, I bought like three posters and I got a CD, and all they had left was
- 9:18the movie soundtrack for Jet Li's The One.
- 9:22Ryan: Uh,
- 9:22Kearns: it was so good.
- 9:24It was so bad, it was so good.
- 9:26But I mean, it had like three Disturbed songs on it, for starters.
- 9:29Just like go with that.
- 9:32Like, uh, I think Smashing Plates was like the final song in the movie.
- 9:36It's, oh my God, it was so terrible.
- 9:37I can't think of like any oth- like a good movie sou- like, I don't
- 9:40know, Jurassic Park or whatever,
- 9:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 9:43Kearns: work of art.
- 9:44No, we're going with The One, ladies and gentlemen.
- 9:49Jon: I g- I have a bunch.
- 9:51like, some of the, standard ones that I think I've talked about how
- 9:54much I love the Shocker soundtrack.
- 9:57Um, the Spawn soundtrack was pretty cool
- 10:02Kearns: That one is… Oh man, that one is good.
- 10:06Dang it
- 10:08Jon: I always liked the Demon Knight soundtrack.
- 10:10the Demon Knight soundtrack is really where I discovered Pantera,
- 10:15'cause Cemetery, a, a shortened version of Cemetery Gates is on
- 10:19there, and from there it was like, "Oh, I'm, I like Pantera now."
- 10:22Kearns: That's the only reason I ever wanted to learn the guitar was to
- 10:25Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:26Kearns: to Cemetery Gates.
- 10:27Jon: Yep.
- 10:28Kearns: uh, Primal Concrete Sledge is an
- 10:30Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:32Yep.
- 10:32Yep
- 10:33Kearns: way, way too good.
- 10:35People
- 10:35Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:38And I'll, I'll give you, I'll give you three slightly more obscure ones.
- 10:42I actually watched this one for the first time the other day as part
- 10:44of my so far 30 movies of October.
- 10:47a movie called Death to Metal.
- 10:50it's all like really like underground metal bands, but it really, it like
- 10:55especially works for a movie where, you know, a, a fallen murderous priest
- 11:02is running around killing metalheads.
- 11:04So
- 11:05Ryan: All
- 11:05Jon: it re- it really works.
- 11:07and then there's the soundtrack to a movie called Devil's Candy.
- 11:10I've talked about the movie on here a little bit before, and I think I
- 11:13gotta pop that onto our calendar.
- 11:15I think it was briefly on our calendar this year and I had to
- 11:17bump it, but that soundtrack is like main- a lot of mainstream metal.
- 11:22It's one of the few soundtracks I've heard Metallica on.
- 11:25and then another one that has to wind up on here pretty soon is Deathgasm.
- 11:30That soundtrack is, that is, that has a whole bunch of like
- 11:36Kearns: Okay
- 11:37Jon: and like, like Emperor and Midnight and Nunslaughter are on that soundtrack.
- 11:42It, it's a pretty good s- it's pretty good.
- 11:45And the, the movie itself is pretty amazing too.
- 11:49Kearns: Nice
- 11:51Ryan: I'll throw out another soundtrack.
- 11:52Uh, it's not an obscure movie, but I feel like the soundtrack doesn't
- 11:56get a lot of love is the thing.
- 11:58Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 11:59Ryan: from the first beat of the orchestra, it's another Ennio
- 12:03Mor- um, uh, s- uh, soundtrack.
- 12:08the first beat to the end, you're on your, the edge of your seat.
- 12:12Along with the acting, the music really supplies a lot of that suspense
- 12:17Kearns: Cool.
- 12:18Jon: Yeah.
- 12:19Coming up in the next couple weeks on this podcast
- 12:23Ryan: Yes, it is.
- 12:24Oh, yes it is.
- 12:25Kearns: All right.
- 12:26Let's get into the movie a little bit here,
- 12:28Jon: Let's get into Return of the Living Dead
- 12:30Kearns: So what's, what's going on with the controversy?
- 12:33Jon: Oh, boy.
- 12:34So the reason Return of Living Dead was on the calendar for now is it
- 12:39would coincide with the release of a new Return of Living Dead.
- 12:43Obviously, you haven't seen a trailer for a new Return of the Living Dead.
- 12:47I haven't gone wild about a new Return of the Living Dead
- 12:51because it is once again delayed.
- 12:53probably permanently, so yeah, it's, it-- this, it's a problem.
- 12:58so the history goes sorta like this.
- 13:01A new sequel was announced and originally scheduled to be re-released
- 13:05Christmastime of 2025, with Steve Walsh set to write and direct.
- 13:10you don't know Steve Walsh because he hasn't made a lot.
- 13:13I think I've seen one of his previous movies called Kill
- 13:16Her Goats, and it was okay.
- 13:18You know, he-- it was okay, but it wasn't enough for me to be super excited about
- 13:23him getting his hands on this franchise.
- 13:25and Devon Sawa was gonna be in it.
- 13:28You got a teaser trailer which I think I shared to every--
- 13:33with everybody I've ever met.
- 13:35You know, with Tarman dragging a Christmas tree through the snow.
- 13:38Super excited.
- 13:40And then just out of nowhere, it was announced that it was
- 13:43delayed to November of 2026.
- 13:46I think this, this was even on my beginning of the year, I'm
- 13:49most excited for these movies.
- 13:51And now it's pushed to 2027 sort of officially, but I don't think
- 13:56it's gonna happen, and here's why.
- 13:58So Walsh set up a production company called Living Dead Media under the
- 14:02belief that he somehow controlled the copyright to the original script.
- 14:08in addition to a new movie, he sold merchandising rights featuring the
- 14:12or- the likenesses of the original cast members, and that's where he s-
- 14:17that's where his problems started.
- 14:20He started licensing material with likenesses of other people on it who were
- 14:28not happy about it, and who-- other people who were not happy about it and who did
- 14:33not believe that he owned the rights.
- 14:36So a group consisting of Beverly Randolph, who was Tina in Return of the Living Dead,
- 14:42and Linnea Quigley counter-sued Walsh.
- 14:46Ryan: Okay
- 14:46Jon: he sued them to get them to, to stop the grievances and stuff.
- 14:50They s- counter-sued.
- 14:51the Quigley-Rand-Randolph group, called, called themselves the Return of the Living
- 14:55Dead Originals and claimed he didn't own the rights and was wrongly using their
- 15:00images without consent or compensation.
- 15:04So he had taken these images without their permission and was using them and getting
- 15:09paid, and they were getting nothing.
- 15:11so over the course of a couple years, this was going through courts, and in
- 15:14July of this year, 2026, the judge came down on the side of the Return of the
- 15:20Living Dead Originals, finding that Walsh did not own the rights to the movie, and
- 15:26additionally ruled that the merchandising trademarks that he had gotten did not give
- 15:31him ownership over the actors' rights.
- 15:34Kearns: Wow
- 15:36Jon: he sold all this stuff to, to companies.
- 15:39I had seen some of the names I don't remember now.
- 15:42It might've been Target.
- 15:44It might've… I think it was a lot of, like, the independent.
- 15:46I saw a post, I don't know who this guy represents, but that one company
- 15:51was out $50,000 from this So like it's gonna be pretty bad for those people.
- 15:57They reached a settlement, but it sounds like that settlement is… It
- 16:02means that he can go ahead and make a movie, but it can't be a Return
- 16:05of the Living Dead movie directly.
- 16:07Linnea Quigley had tried to make a sequel of her own called Trash's
- 16:12Revenge, which has an IMDb page.
- 16:15I can't find anything indicating that it was ever actually made.
- 16:20I know she was fundraising for that for a while.
- 16:22Um, but in any event, the sequel is at best on life support, but I
- 16:28would be very surprised if we ever see anything more than the trailer
- 16:32I mean
- 16:42Kearns: Yeah, I mean, John, do you know why I'm laughing?
- 16:51We gotta keep going.
- 16:52We gotta keep rolling here.
- 16:54Uh, you very clearly farted and then and then unmuted and went, "That stinks."
- 17:00I just, I couldn't handle it, man.
- 17:02I couldn't handle it.
- 17:03It was so funny.
- 17:05Oh my God.
- 17:06It was the lean
- 17:10with the mute on.
- 17:11I was like, "Oh, man.
- 17:12Jon: We are not gonna cut this
- 17:19Kearns: This is, this is Patreon stuff right here?
- 17:23Oh my God,
- 17:25Jon: I mean, I mean, ju- just based on the color of his face, we can't cut this.
- 17:30How- we're gonna have to explain the next 10 minutes of him being that red faced
- 17:37Kearns: You know?
- 17:38I just, you just, I mean, I mean, it
- 17:44You know, it's natural.
- 17:46biological occurrence.
- 17:48I think he did it again.
- 17:56Jon: Fry…
- 17:57Kearns: Ryan.
- 17:57Breathe, Ryan.
- 18:00Jon: do I need a soundboard.
- 18:02Kearns: Can't have you stroking out on here
- 18:06Oh my God, dude
- 18:11You okay?
- 18:12Jon: Oh, goodness.
- 18:13Kearns: Got an upset tummy?
- 18:14Too much Dr. Pepper?
- 18:19Ryan: The chair.
- 18:20Kearns: the Mountain
- 18:20Jon: Yeah.
- 18:22Kearns: The beavers
- 18:23Ryan: was the
- 18:23Jon: It was, it was the chair
- 18:26Ryan: It was the chair
- 18:27Kearns: Yeah.
- 18:28Take down some more of that yum yum juice.
- 18:34Ryan: Hey, Dr Pepper's the best.
- 18:36Kearns: Dr. Pepper.
- 18:37Dr. Pepper is the best.
- 18:39Um, baby.
- 18:41All right.
- 18:42Uh, J- John, we, we completely derailed you
- 18:46Ryan: it
- 18:47Jon: it's okay.
- 18:47We, w- we got to the end, we got to the end of the story.
- 18:52Kearns: I
- 18:52Jon: Now you guys can, can hit some reactions on this if you want.
- 18:55I know Ryan thinks it stinks, but I'm not sure if he thinks
- 19:00it, that stinks or his ass stinks
- 19:04Kearns: We had some reactions on this.
- 19:06Honestly, um, he's an idiot.
- 19:09That's, that's the dumbest possible
- 19:11Jon: Yeah.
- 19:13Kearns: bit more understanding if he wasn't clearly just,
- 19:16you know, robbing other people
- 19:18Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:19Kearns: while
- 19:19Jon: And, and that, that's the problem.
- 19:21He probably gets away with this whole thing if he doesn't get greedy,
- 19:25Kearns: Yeah
- 19:25Jon: if he doesn't start pumping out original "Return of the Living Dead"
- 19:29merchandise with other people's names on it and not paying them for it, like
- 19:34Kearns: And there's also the fact that, The original delay was because he refused
- 19:39to do anything other than practical effects, which I understand is like,
- 19:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:43Kearns: you gotta do what you gotta do for your vision and everything.
- 19:45But I bet you if he didn't push the, the, or delay it so much, it would've
- 19:50come out before the court order
- 19:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 19:54Yeah.
- 19:55Ryan: I, can see him releasing it under a different name.
- 19:59Jon: I mean, it
- 20:00Ryan: him doing that little
- 20:03Jon: At this point, that's what he has to do.
- 20:05I mean, I don't know
- 20:06Kearns: dead
- 20:07Jon: nobody outside of the, the principals know what the settlement is.
- 20:10It was never disclosed.
- 20:12you know, I'm sure he knows what he can and can't d- I, I mean, maybe
- 20:16he knows what he can and can't do because he didn't seem to before,
- 20:19but maybe he has a better idea now.
- 20:23You know, no, it, it j- it seems like he's the kinda guy who is just
- 20:27saying, "Yeah, I have this, I have this," and just trying to speak it
- 20:30into existence, and you can't do that
- 20:32Kearns: Right
- 20:35Ryan: True.
- 20:36He was, you know, he was trying to work the system and he got caught basically.
- 20:42Jon: Yep.
- 20:42Ryan: how I see it.
- 20:43Jon: Yeah
- 20:45Ryan: and whose right mind would want to like have their face sold and not
- 20:50get, you know, some revenue from it?
- 20:54Jon: Yeah.
- 20:55I, I mean, e- especially with this property
- 21:00Ryan: Oh yeah.
- 21:01Jon: A, a,
- 21:02Ryan: he was making a killing, right?
- 21:04Jon: with, with the, with this property and with, you know, d- you know,
- 21:09all, these are-- We're not talking about, like, Tom Cruise and Matt Damon
- 21:14level actors and actresses, you know?
- 21:16These are people who, you know, are, have never had that huge paycheck movie,
- 21:21so that money's important to them.
- 21:22The licensing of those characters for most of them is probably the
- 21:27biggest m- the biggest check they get
- 21:30Kearns: Yeah
- 21:32Ryan: Yeah,
- 21:34Very true
- 21:37Jon: Yeah
- 21:37Ryan: there is, there is someone though who doesn't deserve a check
- 21:42Jon: Yeah, there's someone worse involved in… Yeah, we, we ha- we
- 21:46have to bring him up really quickly.
- 21:48Um, the character of Scuzz is played by gross-ass Brian Peck.
- 21:53Um, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not gonna go into all the stuff he did.
- 21:58He, it's all very, very available online.
- 22:04Um, he's featured, his stuff is featured in the Quiet on the Set,
- 22:09Ryan: Yep
- 22:11Jon: out a year or two ago about Dan Schneider and, and the making
- 22:14of those Nickelodeon kids TV shows.
- 22:18he's a gross dude
- 22:20Ryan: It's a peckerhead.
- 22:21Jon: And Peck,
- 22:23Kearns: a minute.
- 22:24That's
- 22:24Jon: Pe-,
- 22:25Kearns: one.
- 22:25He wrote that into the show
- 22:27Jon: yeah.
- 22:27Yeah, yeah, that, that is a good one.
- 22:29That is a good one.
- 22:31Oh, yeah, I mean, he's, he's, he's not a good dude, and he's for, I mean, for
- 22:36me, the only blemish on this movie, and like how could you know, go, you know.
- 22:41You c- you couldn't have known making this movie that you were casting that
- 22:48Ryan: Yeah.
- 22:49It's, it kinda, you know, it connects to when we covered The Burning and
- 22:54Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:54Ryan: Weinstein has a
- 22:56Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 22:56Ryan: in that film.
- 22:57It's like, dislike that film?
- 23:01You enjoy the film for what it
- 23:03Kearns: Harvey who?
- 23:04Ryan: the person who created Uh, Weinstein.
- 23:06Kearns: okay.
- 23:07Got it.
- 23:07Ryan: or Weinstein?
- 23:09Kearns: You got it the first time you said Weinstein.
- 23:12It's the first time in my life I'd ever heard his name pronounced that way.
- 23:17Ryan: He, he doesn't deserve the right pronunciation.
- 23:21Jon: That's fair.
- 23:21Ryan: Uh,
- 23:21Kearns: He's a bad
- 23:22Jon: That's fair.
- 23:23Ryan: saying.
- 23:23Kearns: He's a bad man.
- 23:25Jon: Hervey Weinstein.
- 23:27Ryan: Weinstein.
- 23:29Kearns: um, is not
- 23:30Jon: Peck
- 23:31Kearns: If you don't know his, if you don't know his, um, story, he
- 23:35is not unlike Harvey Weinstein.
- 23:37The only
- 23:38Jon: No.
- 23:38Kearns: he's not nearly as much power.
- 23:41Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 23:42Kearns: So
- 23:42Jon: And generally not the same age range
- 23:47Kearns: Yes Good point
- 23:51Ryan: yeah.
- 23:53But again, it's a film that you can still enjoy because you can really ignore him.
- 23:59His part is very small.
- 24:01It's just really, like, with the punk rockers, and a lot of the
- 24:05other punk characters overtake him.
- 24:08Like, I really didn't notice him that much.
- 24:12He wasn't the one with the chain in the lip,
- 24:14Jon: No, no, that's self-harm.
- 24:16Kearns: the guy,
- 24:16Ryan: Okay.
- 24:17He's, like, my favorite character,
- 24:19Jon: S- self-harm is awesome.
- 24:21I love that, dude.
- 24:23Kearns: Brian
- 24:23Jon: I love it.
- 24:24He-
- 24:24Kearns: there
- 24:26Jon: Brian Peck is Scuzz.
- 24:27Kearns: Yeah, there's
- 24:28Jon: Tom Matthew, Tom Matthews is Freddy.
- 24:31Kearns: Oh,
- 24:31Jon: Freddy's the guy that works there, yeah.
- 24:33Yeah, that's Tom Matthews.
- 24:34Ryan: is, is
- 24:35Jon: is the one with the mohawk.
- 24:37Kearns: Yeah.
- 24:37Jon: No
- 24:39Kearns: No
- 24:40Ryan: oh.
- 24:41Jon: The one with the tie is fine.
- 24:43Ryan: he looks like a scuzz.
- 24:45Jon: Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
- 24:47Kearns: All
- 24:47Jon: No, but Self Harm is my favorite, probably my favorite
- 24:51character in this movie.
- 24:52Just for that one, d- mainly for that one line, you know?
- 24:56"You think this is a costume? This is a way of life." You know?
- 24:59Like, the way… That line, like that, like, from, from then on,
- 25:05Self Harm can do no wrong for me.
- 25:08So one of the interesting things about this, uh, for me is the zombie
- 25:13lore that goes into this and how by every, every standard, these are
- 25:18not the kinds of zombies that I like
- 25:21Kearns: No, me neither
- 25:24Jon: Um, you know,
- 25:25Ryan: I,
- 25:26Jon: they're fat, they're fast.
- 25:28Kearns: Don
- 25:29Jon: That's usually a, that's usually a big no for me.
- 25:32Um, they're largely unkillable, which is also generally a big no for me.
- 25:40I, I, you know, I…
- 25:41Ryan: agree
- 25:41Jon: Easy, they don't have to be easy, but there has to be, you know, the
- 25:45glimmer of hope that you can survive this.
- 25:48Um, but I think the thing that really threw me the most at first,
- 25:53that took me a little bit to get into this, uh, like really loving
- 25:56this movie, is that they talk
- 25:59Kearns: Yeah, that's pretty funny, the brains
- 26:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:02Mm-hmm.
- 26:04Ryan: Do
- 26:04Jon: They
- 26:04Ryan: think it's because, like, night, dawn, and day works up on the
- 26:11intelligence level of the zombies?
- 26:13They felt like return might have been, like, a one-hit wonder, and they
- 26:17just fit it in in one whole thing?
- 26:20'Cause their intelligence levels increases pretty quickly
- 26:24Kearns: They play on that in further movies down the line where you
- 26:26get your zombies that are forming packs and f- getting intelligence.
- 26:31Uh, I think
- 26:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:32Kearns: Dead.
- 26:32It happens in I Am Legend.
- 26:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 26:35Kearns: th-
- 26:35Jon: I mean
- 26:36Kearns: there, but I don't know if that's what they're doing here, and not
- 26:39Jon: It, it ha- it happened in the Ro- Romero, uh, zombie movies, you know,
- 26:44from Night where they're just, you know, lifeless bodies always moving forward
- 26:51to by the end of Land, you have the mechanic zombie leading and they're
- 26:56using tools and, and that was something, you know, that Romero would want-
- 27:01was continuing to explore in fiction.
- 27:04the book that Daniel Kraus finished for him, like, is a full zombie
- 27:10evolution into being, like, almost a functional society of its own
- 27:16Kearns: Well, they kind of do that in the 28 Days Later movies too,
- 27:19Jon: Mm-hmm
- 27:20Kearns: they're birthing children and such
- 27:22Jon: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:24Kearns: Which is kind of
- 27:24Jon: Well, and,
- 27:25Kearns: That's a
- 27:25Jon: and, and
- 27:26Kearns: but yeah
- 27:27Jon: yeah, yeah.
- 27:28I, I mean, even the creation of the zombies in this is explained.
- 27:32You know, you get an explanation which you never really got from Romero.
- 27:36You got sorta like, you know, hints at stuff and like, "Oh, well, we passed
- 27:42through the tail end of this comet, and maybe that caused this," you know, sort
- 27:46of vagary, while this is clearly this 2-4-5 trioxin caused a zombie outbreak
- 27:54That was the original Night of Living Dead.
- 27:58And then you need a chemical, you need a warehouse winds up with the barrels
- 28:07Kearns: That's
- 28:07Jon: With,
- 28:07Kearns: didn't realize that that
- 28:08Jon: yeah
- 28:09Kearns: caused the original Night of the Living Dead
- 28:11Jon: Romero never wrote it into a movie, but just so much.
- 28:14But that was… It comes up in one of the little news clips in Night that,
- 28:19you know, speculation is that it, or, or it, sorry, it wasn't the planet, it
- 28:23was, um, a space and a, a, a spacecraft like, uh, astronauts had passed
- 28:29through the tail end and then brought this back with them kind of thing.
- 28:34But it never got s- really deeply explored
- 28:39Kearns: Interesting.
- 28:41So this is the spiritual sequel to Night of the Living Dead then?
- 28:46That's, that's a rubber stamp thing?
- 28:49'Cause it's, uh, spiritu- if it's spiritually the sequel, I mean, it doesn't
- 28:52feel like the sequel in any other way.
- 28:56Ryan: I mean, spiritual could be how, like who the director is, the, how the
- 29:03actors act, if they're kinda like, even if they're playing a new character or
- 29:06they're similar to past characters.
- 29:09Is the story similar?
- 29:10Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 29:11Ryan: maybe there's like little minor connections.
- 29:14You know, it's not really like the biggest thing.
- 29:17Jon: Well
- 29:18Ryan: just like those little, those little nooks
- 29:20Jon: I mean, for the first 20 minutes, it kind of is.
- 29:24It's kind of a big thing because when Frank brings Freddy down into the
- 29:28basement, it's to see this barrel that was from… And, and, you know, and he
- 29:33s- he says, "You remember that movie Night of Living Dead?" And he goes
- 29:38into this whole thing about how, yeah, it was a true story, but it wasn't
- 29:42how the movie played it out, and that it was a chemical leak from wherever,
- 29:49and, you know, it made people…
- 29:51I for- forget Frank's exact phrasing, but, like, got- made them act
- 29:56all crazy and stuff, and this is, these are real barrels from there.
- 30:00And then even when they're trying to take out the, corpse that they had,
- 30:05the body that they had upstairs, and, Burt hits it in the head
- 30:09with the ax, and it keeps coming.
- 30:12And, Freddy says, "You mean the movie lied?"
- 30:18Kearns: Even better.
- 30:20Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 30:20Kearns: better
- 30:22Jon: So yeah, I mean, it-- And it, um, so thi- is very, very loosely based
- 30:28on a book written by Joe Russo, who was Romero's writing partner during,
- 30:34and pr- partner-partner through, you know, the early Romero days,
- 30:39including "Night of the Living Dead." There's not really anything except a
- 30:43title that's in common, but Russo, I believe, has story credits for this
- 30:50Ryan: I mean, you can technically watch Night of the Living Dead and watch this
- 30:54as like an alternate universe sequel,
- 30:57Jon: Yeah.
- 30:58Ryan: with its own franchise
- 31:00Kearns: Okay.
- 31:00Ryan: to it
- 31:01Kearns: It's,
- 31:02Jon: Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't go too far into the Return of the Living Dead
- 31:06franchise beyond one and maybe two
- 31:10Ryan: I was gonna say up to two,
- 31:12Jon: Three's, three's okay, but three's not… Three is not even a Return of
- 31:17the Living Dead movie at that point
- 31:19Kearns: Let's go through the cast here.
- 31:21Any, any notable people?
- 31:23We kinda touched on this already, but who are the, who are most
- 31:25notable actors in this film?
- 31:27Ryan: Miguel A. Nunez Jr., he was in a Friday the 13th, I think.
- 31:32Was it part six?
- 31:33Part five?
- 31:34Jon: it was six
- 31:36Kearns: I am in Nudo.
- 31:36Ryan: six?
- 31:38Yep, part
- 31:38Kearns: Now
- 31:40Jon: Spider.
- 31:41Kearns: Yeah, spider was in the nudoh
- 31:44Jon: I mean, you get, you ha- y- you start with the three old guys.
- 31:47You know, James Karen was on Broadway starting in 1947, and then he's Frank in
- 31:53"Return of the Living Dead." he was Mr. Teague in "Poltergeist" who we just saw.
- 31:59you know, a lot of roles like that, and then a lot of roles
- 32:02like that going forward.
- 32:03Don Calfa, who played Ernie, "Dr.
- 32:07Dolittle," "Foul Play," "10," "1941." You know, like, the very recognizable dude.
- 32:15And then there's, Clu Gulager, who was… Got his big break in TV Westerns.
- 32:22He starred in "The Virginian" and then, you know, a lot
- 32:25of, lot of cowboys and cops.
- 32:28And then, you know, later in life, he becomes, like, he, a horror guy.
- 32:33He's in all three "Feast" movies, uh, "A Nightmare on Elm Street 2."
- 32:38Kearns: I do like me the Feast movies.
- 32:41Jon: yeah.
- 32:41Kearns: I like the Feast movies
- 32:43Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 32:44Um, "The Hidden." Tom Matthews, who was in a bunch of "Friday
- 32:47the 13th" related things.
- 32:49Ryan: Jarvis
- 32:50Jon: Yep, he's Tommy Jarvis.
- 32:52And they, and then he came back in all the fan films, the
- 32:55"Never Hike Alone" fan films.
- 32:56He's Tommy Jarvis in all those too
- 33:00Ryan: It's, it's his look and how he portrayed
- 33:02Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:03Ryan: It was the closest I feel what Corey Feldman was going with
- 33:06Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 33:08Ryan: in the original
- 33:09Jon: I think the funniest thing with Tom Matthews and James Karen is
- 33:13Return of Living Dead Part II, where they come back in basically the same
- 33:19roles but not the same characters
- 33:26They're just, you know, they're, they're bumbling grave robbers
- 33:30Ryan: So it's Evil Dead II basically.
- 33:33a requel
- 33:34Jon: Yeah, kind of.
- 33:35Kind of, yeah.
- 33:37you know, Linnea Quigley's probably at this point the biggest name involved
- 33:41in this, and that's just from all the B movies that she's made over the years.
- 33:45her IMDb is endless, you know.
- 33:49And we've talked about her once already on this, and we'll talk
- 33:52about her again 'cause she was in Silent Night, Deadly Night.
- 33:55she was, in a couple of Cheech & Chong movies, which I kinda find funny.
- 33:59of the cast, Beverly Randolph, who played Tina, is the one who's
- 34:02just sort of vanished afterwards.
- 34:05She wasn't in anything after Return of the Living Dead until 2015, and
- 34:09then it's just, like, popping up in little small roles here and there.
- 34:13And then the funniest, the funniest story re- revolving casting in this is
- 34:18Jewel Shepard, who's, Casey, the one with the kinda weird hair, who I adore.
- 34:25I love that, that woman.
- 34:27so she met and befriended Dan O'Bannon at her job working as a stripper
- 34:36Ryan: Okay
- 34:36Jon: And when Dan O'Bannon, who wrote and directed Return of the Living Dead, s-
- 34:41sat down to start making this, thinking of cast, he went right to Jewel Shepard.
- 34:47And that basically like, you know, didn't launch her career.
- 34:50She had some other roles, but yeah, she winds up in this because
- 34:54she was his favorite stripper
- 34:56Kearns: Nice
- 34:57Ryan: That's…
- 34:59Kearns: You know, you
- 35:00Jon: Always re- always remember the little people on the way, man
- 35:03Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 35:04Indeed.
- 35:05All right.
- 35:07That's good cash trivia right there.
- 35:08Now, you got a, bullet in here before we get to our game about the 245
- 35:12Trioxin being based on a real chemical.
- 35:16Jon: Yes, it is.
- 35:17Hold on, let me…
- 35:18Kearns: true?
- 35:18Jon: It, it is,
- 35:20Kearns: I know there's
- 35:21Jon: it is act-
- 35:22Kearns: the voodoo dust that zombifies people, but that
- 35:25can't be what this is based on
- 35:27Jon: So 2,4,5-Trioxin is sort of based on the real chemical
- 35:342,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate
- 35:41acid, which is the key component in Agent Orange
- 35:49Ryan: Oh, no.
- 35:49Yeah.
- 35:49No
- 35:50Jon: Oh, yeah.
- 35:52Kearns: Well, I guess so it's, it's not a zombifying chemical per se.
- 35:56Jon: No.
- 35:57Kearns: Yeah, it's just bad.
- 35:58Very, very bad government chemical
- 36:02Jon: So that was sort of the, the basis for 245 Tracks and
- 36:09Kearns: There's a bit
- 36:10Jon: Yeah.
- 36:11Kearns: about for a second.
- 36:12And
- 36:14Jon: Mm-hmm
- 36:14Kearns: yeah, we did that.
- 36:15Ryan: orange
- 36:16Kearns: Didn't we turn that into a roundup?
- 36:19Jon: Yeah.
- 36:20Yeah, we did.
- 36:21Kearns: we
- 36:21Jon: We did.
- 36:22We did, and then a whole bunch of people got sick, and we couldn't figure out why
- 36:25Kearns: Yeah, we're still, we're still using it.
- 36:28Just
- 36:28Jon: Yeah.
- 36:29Kearns: Hey, thanks
- 36:29Jon: Yeah.
- 36:30Kearns: All right.
- 36:32John, you got a game for us?
- 36:35Jon: Of course there's a game for you guys.
- 36:36Um,
- 36:37Ryan: Word.
- 36:37Ooh
- 36:38Jon: we, we're going with a game we haven't done in a while.
- 36:41We, we have not had a blind rank in quite some time, gentlemen
- 36:46Ryan: Oh, boy.
- 36:47Okay.
- 36:48Jon: So we are going to blind rank these five zombie horror
- 36:55comedies, starting with Zombieland
- 37:00Kearns: Fine ranking five horror comedies and Zombieland
- 37:04Jon: Yes.
- 37:04Kearns: because you're an
- 37:05Jon: "Zombieland" is
- 37:07Kearns: Okay
- 37:12Jon: Maybe.
- 37:12Ryan: I'm gonna be, I'm gonna be safe and I'm gonna go with number two
- 37:16Kearns: Is that safe?
- 37:17Jon: Wow.
- 37:18Thief is two, huh?
- 37:20Ryan: I, I really enjoyed this film.
- 37:22I saw it in the theaters.
- 37:23But Zombieland's such a good film
- 37:26Kearns: It is a
- 37:27Jon: Yeah, I s-
- 37:28Kearns: It's a good hang
- 37:29Ryan: It, but is a, a number one if he has it
- 37:33Kearns: Well, it's gonna be Shaun of the Dead.
- 37:35But let's go with number four for Zombieland for me because I think, I think
- 37:41I know a couple of them that are coming up and they are better than Zombieland.
- 37:46I do
- 37:46Jon: All right, well.
- 37:47Kearns: cameo almost brought me to number three with
- 37:49Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 37:51Mm-hmm.
- 37:53All right, movie number two, Dead Alive
- 37:59Ryan: Number three
- 38:00Kearns: Yeah, I will also put Dead Alive at number three.
- 38:05The goriest fright film of all time.
- 38:08Not even close, Dead Alive.
- 38:09Not even close
- 38:11Jon: Not even close.
- 38:13And not even at the time either
- 38:16Ryan: that cover's so cool.
- 38:17Kearns: Yeah, that one always got
- 38:19Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:21Yeah.
- 38:23Yeah.
- 38:23Kearns: I was like, "Whoa, what's
- 38:24Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 38:25Yep.
- 38:27All right
- 38:28Ryan: in there?
- 38:29That was my question.
- 38:32Jon: You'll have to watch the movie
- 38:36All right, number three.
- 38:39There's Shaun of the Dead.
- 38:41Oh, no, what couldn't be opened?
- 38:43Oh, no, it worked okay
- 38:45Kearns: Whew.
- 38:46Um,
- 38:47Ryan: Number one
- 38:50Kearns: What could be better than Shaun of the Dead?
- 38:52There's a reason he's got it here.
- 38:55He's, he's not a tame lion, Ryan.
- 39:00He's not a tame lion
- 39:01Ryan: I'm happy.
- 39:02I'm happy so far.
- 39:04Kearns: Are ya?
- 39:05I'm tempted to put Shaun at number two.
- 39:08I'm tempted to put it at number two, but I'm trying to think of a zombie movie that
- 39:11I think is funnier than Shaun of the Dead
- 39:15Ryan: Idle hands
- 39:16Kearns: No
- 39:18Jon: Not really a zombie movie
- 39:20Kearns: I'm gonna put it at number one.
- 39:23I'm gonna put it at number one.
- 39:24Leaves me open for number two and number five, which is dangerous.
- 39:27It's a dangerous spread
- 39:30Ryan: I got
- 39:30Jon: It is.
- 39:32This might work out un-- sadly well for both of you.
- 39:35Kearns: Unsadly?
- 39:37Uh,
- 39:37Jon: Sadly, sadly
- 39:39Kearns: five and I'm two and five
- 39:42Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 39:43Let's see how you feel about movie number four.
- 39:46It's Dead Snow
- 39:48Kearns: cool
- 39:50Ryan: Number four
- 39:53Kearns: Is dead snow number two?
- 39:55Is it though?
- 39:57Is it
- 39:58Ryan: you could put it at number five and you don't have to feel guilty 'cause
- 40:01Kearns: I am gonna, I am gonna put it at number five.
- 40:05I enjoyed it, but I am gonna put it at number five
- 40:09Ryan: John's laughing.
- 40:12John's
- 40:12Kearns: Look at him clapping Would
- 40:16Jon: That means, Kearns, your number two movie is
- 40:21Kearns: Oh, sweet.
- 40:22Jon: Strippers.
- 40:24Ryan: That's my
- 40:25Kearns: Yes.
- 40:26will take it.
- 40:29That works out well, and I'm glad that that didn't beat Shaun of the Dead.
- 40:31But, um, Zombieland, Zombieland.
- 40:35Zombieland at number four is a bit of a regret at this point
- 40:40But still,
- 40:40Ryan: two was a safe bet.
- 40:42Kearns: I'm quite happy with that one.
- 40:44Quite happy.
- 40:45Ryan: came back.
- 40:47Kearns: was
- 40:47Jon: Yeah, Blind Drink is a nice one.
- 40:49I like Blind Drink I got a box of four candles this size.
- 40:54Like, it's not, it wasn't a small box
- 40:58Ryan: Hold on.
- 40:58Do you, can we start, can we start this?
- 41:00'Cause this is a big… is, this is something that's been going around,
- 41:04around too, because Jada ordered some things and didn't get them delivered.
- 41:11I mean, we got something delivered just now at 9:50 PM.
- 41:18Whatever time zone you're in, it's 9:50 wherever, you know
- 41:27Jon: Yeah.
- 41:28Ryan: I'm just saying it grinds
- 41:29Kearns: Oh, is that too late?
- 41:31Ryan: deliver
- 41:31Kearns: Is that too late
- 41:33Ryan: saying,
- 41:34Jon: Who deli- who delivered to you at 9:50?
- 41:37Kearns: Was it Amazon?
- 41:39Jon: Is it Amazon?
- 41:41Ryan: Probably,
- 41:42Kearns: Probably a flex driver.
- 41:44Jon: I didn't,
- 41:45Kearns: allowed to put it in
- 41:46Jon: I didn't think Amazon was allowed to put it in mailboxes, yeah.
- 41:49Ryan: Nothing, nothing, nothing's in the
- 41:50Jon: Mm-mm.
- 41:51Nobody, nobody, nobody who's not a postman can put anything in your mailbox.
- 41:57Yeah
- 41:58Kearns: Federer crown
- 41:59Ryan: So you're telling me when I was a kid and I used to deliver my
- 42:02Kearns: Yep.
- 42:04Ryan: and
- 42:04Kearns: Yep.
- 42:05Ryan: was…
- 42:05Kearns: a crime.
- 42:06Jon: Yeah.
- 42:07Kearns: sir
- 42:08Jon: Uh,
- 42:09Ryan: Since
- 42:09Jon: on.
- 42:10I'm, I'm calling the feds now.
- 42:12Ryan: old.
- 42:13Jon: I'm
- 42:14Kearns: uh, letters of thank, like thank you letters to the neighbors and stuff
- 42:17when they've done stuff for the kids.
- 42:19I put them in their mailbox fully knowing I'm breaking the law,
- 42:22'cause I'm a rebel like that too
- 42:23Ryan: I, I thought it was
- 42:25Kearns: It's not
- 42:26Ryan: That's the, that's the problem.
- 42:27I'm, I'm very innocent.
- 42:29Kearns: Also hitting those things with a mailbox while driving in a Chevy Corsica,
- 42:34much so a crime, if you didn't know that.
- 42:38Jon: Yep.
- 42:39Ryan: Same
- 42:39Jon: Yep
- 42:39Ryan: the Buick LeSabre Very much agreed.
- 42:42Kearns: The car doesn't
- 42:43Jon: That's…
- 42:44Ryan: Very much.
- 42:47Jon: hitting anything with the Buick LeSabre
- 42:50Kearns: "And also in an El Camino."
- 42:55Jon: No, see, we never, hit the mailboxes.
- 42:57We had to hit those newspaper boxes.
- 42:59Kearns: better.
- 43:00Jon: not a federal crime
- 43:01Kearns: even better.
- 43:02It's not a federal crime.
- 43:04That's true.
- 43:04It's a misdemeanor.
- 43:06Jon: I, I used to take those things 'cause nobody ever, really
- 43:10cemented them into the ground.
- 43:12They just sort of s- stuck them in the ground, so they came out real easy
- 43:16Kearns: good times.
- 43:16Ryan: Were they always
- 43:17Kearns: That's good
- 43:18Jon: Yeah.
- 43:19Kearns: debauchery
- 43:21Jon: I had a collection of reporter dispatch boxes
- 43:24Kearns: by the way, is that, is that a ca- a special candle?
- 43:27Mayhap ordered
- 43:28Jon: No.
- 43:29Kearns: charity?
- 43:31Jon: No, no, those are downstairs.
- 43:33Kearns: downstairs
- 43:33Jon: is my… I didn't realize this was, like, a, a Nickelodeon property thing.
- 43:38It's an Angry Beavers candle.
- 43:41Ryan: I--
- 43:42Jon: I really,
- 43:43Kearns: is definitely gonna be in the
- 43:44Jon: I,
- 43:45Ryan: the angry beaverse.
- 43:46Jon: I,
- 43:46Ryan: I like the
- 43:47Jon: I don't know.
- 43:47I ju- I just wanted it to smell like an angry beaver
- 43:50Kearns: mean,
- 43:51Ryan: Have you ever seen the cartoon?
- 43:53Kearns: I can't think of
- 43:53Jon: I didn't even know it was a… I didn't know what it was.
- 43:56I'm a grown-up, I don't watch cartoons
- 43:59Ryan: I mean, that was an error with CatDog.
- 44:02CatDog
- 44:05Kearns: we're, we're gonna skip around a little bit on the itinerary
- 44:07here, on the outline, because we have to do naked Trash in the codpiece
- 44:12from the angry beaver candle.
- 44:15So apparently in Return of the Living Dead, as John told me, Trash was fully
- 44:21nude one point until one of the producers caught sight of it and was like,
- 44:26"Oh, no, no, no, we cannot do that."
- 44:27Which is probably the right
- 44:28Jon: Yeah.
- 44:31Um, well, maybe.
- 44:34When you, when you hear his, some of his logic behind this, you have to wonder.
- 44:38so producer Graham Henderson was on set the day that they were filming
- 44:42that scene with Trash dancing around fully naked, and he flipped out at
- 44:49Dan O'Bannon, yelling that you can't show pubic hair on television, as if
- 44:55that was going to be the impediment to "Return of the Living Dead" being on TV
- 44:59Kearns: Yeah.
- 45:00Ryan: I don't think it would've been.
- 45:01Kearns: Well, they would've just
- 45:02Jon: I mean,
- 45:03Kearns: I mean, it
- 45:04Jon: yeah.
- 45:05Kearns: to cut up movies for runtime
- 45:08Jon: Mm-hmm
- 45:09Ryan: too, 'cause Porky's came out in 1981 and there's pubic hair in that.
- 45:15Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 45:15Ryan: when they showed that on TV, they just cut the shower scene out or cut
- 45:20Jon: Yeah.
- 45:21Ryan: it
- 45:22Jon: Yeah.
- 45:22I mean, listen, if, if you're trying to run "Return of the Living
- 45:27Dead" on anything beyond like premium cable back then, you are
- 45:31gonna have to cut a lot anyway.
- 45:34And his solution cost them a lot of money because what ends up happening is
- 45:39they send this to the makeup department who creates a G-string s- shaped
- 45:45appliance that was made to cover her, that they then had to remove every time-
- 45:54Kearns: It's outstanding work
- 45:57Jon: So they cost themselves how much money and how much time to cover up,
- 46:02what, 10 seconds of Full Frontal?
- 46:05Kearns: Yeah, I
- 46:06Ryan: they would have been
- 46:07Kearns: don't understand why they had to keep the front part in.
- 46:10I mean, it would've worked just
- 46:11Jon: No.
- 46:12Kearns: it.
- 46:14Jon: Mm-hmm
- 46:14Kearns: Or at least waist… Yeah, like well, I mean, they, they had that in.
- 46:18Um, that was un- you know, untouched, so they could've
- 46:22just cut the full body front.
- 46:24Ryan: Waste
- 46:24Kearns: exactly.
- 46:25It was, it wouldn't have taken too much cinema magic to get that working for 'em
- 46:30Ryan: cuts.
- 46:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 46:32Ryan: waist up for the rated R people, you know, fully for, like, the uncut people
- 46:37Kearns: But I mean, a testament to the makeup and, uh, costume group.
- 46:41And, uh, that was
- 46:42Jon: Yeah
- 46:42Kearns: we were gonna talk about was the outstanding
- 46:45practical effects in this movie
- 46:49Ryan: Very well done, especially with a lot of the un-alivings.
- 46:52When you see the zombies take a chunk out of, like, the skulls and stuff, you see
- 46:57the whole skull and the brain come apart.
- 47:00It's, it's pretty cool, especially at, like, when they're burning up the
- 47:05bodies and you see, like, the smoke and stuff, like the effects and all that.
- 47:10It's… They did a good
- 47:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 47:11Ryan: especially
- 47:12Jon: I,
- 47:12Ryan: '85
- 47:14Jon: I mean, the achievement in the two main ones that I think of with
- 47:20Tar Man and just how they make him look, and then the half zombie that
- 47:26winds up on the table in the morgue,
- 47:28Kearns: most visceral, I think, in the
- 47:30Jon: that one is a… Like, that's just incredibly done,
- 47:34and it, it was revelatory too.
- 47:39Like, they then u- It's good enough that they can then use it to advance the story.
- 47:44It's not just, you know, window dressing.
- 47:46It's, "Why do you eat brains?" "Because brains ease the pain."
- 47:53Ryan: Do you think there's competition with, uh, Tom Savini since Tom Savini
- 47:58did all of George Romero's Dead movies?
- 48:02You think that was a little competition there or like an
- 48:05Jon: I'm,
- 48:05Ryan: to what
- 48:05Jon: I'm sure, it was.
- 48:07I mean, the real competition that was going on with this
- 48:10with Romero was Day of the Dead
- 48:13Ryan: Yeah.
- 48:13Which
- 48:14Jon: 'Cause they, these are being made basically at the same time to get
- 48:18released at basically the same time.
- 48:21So you have, you know, Romero making a sequel to his, his franchise
- 48:26himself, and then this sort of pseudo sequel being made separately.
- 48:32And at the time, "Return of the Living Dead" won out.
- 48:37Kearns: Which is crazy
- 48:38Jon: Day got a r-
- 48:39Ryan: yeah
- 48:39Jon: got a small release.
- 48:41Day got, Day kinda got buried because it was just smaller in, like, really
- 48:47every way: budget, you know, release.
- 48:52And Return, got a good promotional campaign, and
- 48:55just that benefit of being fun
- 48:59Ryan: Yeah, Return's more in your face.
- 49:02It's more energetic, while Day is very, like, a good pace, but it's
- 49:07more like you gotta think and it's
- 49:09Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:10Ryan: your classic horror story, while Return is like that punk
- 49:14rock, energetic, again, in your
- 49:17Kearns: I mean, Romero films are running on a different, a different type of fuel.
- 49:26The message…
- 49:27Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 49:27Kearns: they, they beat more like a traditional movie.
- 49:32This
- 49:32Jon: Yeah.
- 49:33Kearns: more like uh, of the era for sure.
- 49:36It's… There's a lot of fun.
- 49:37Jon: Mm-hmm
- 49:38Kearns: of laughs.
- 49:39There's a lot of slapstick in it.
- 49:41The acting isn't, isn't very serious throughout the whole movie.
- 49:46Just the beginning part when he- they're freaking out when the
- 49:49c- when the cadaver reanimates and stuff, they're so overacting
- 49:52and being ridiculous on purpose.
- 49:54It's very Evil Dead.
- 49:55Jon: Absolutely.
- 49:56Kearns: Evil
- 49:56Jon: Yeah
- 49:57Kearns: make it bad, but it's not the same thing in my opinion.
- 50:01They're not the same type of
- 50:02Jon: No, it's not, it, it's not the emotional heft.
- 50:06Like, Romero makes, is making movies that are gonna make you feel
- 50:10something, and Return is making a movie that will make you have fun
- 50:15Kearns: There you go
- 50:16Ryan: Yep.
- 50:17Agreed
- 50:19Kearns: Yeah.
- 50:20I like it.
- 50:21What's up with this foreshadowing and background gags everywhere?
- 50:26Jon: I mean, there's so much.
- 50:28I mean, two of the unstated ones, there, there's things that, that, that
- 50:32are said throughout the whole movie that's like, "Oh, wow, that's exactly
- 50:36what happens." But the two that really undersaid th- that ones are, first right
- 50:43after Frank and Freddy release Tar Man.
- 50:48Tar Man's out of the barrel while they're unconscious in the basement.
- 50:51It doesn't touch them.
- 50:53Kearns: Oh
- 50:54Jon: They go upst- they go upstairs, they, they, and they
- 50:57go to eliminate the cadaver.
- 51:01The cadaver, when they open the door, runs right past Freddy and Frank and straight
- 51:06at Burt because they're already dead
- 51:10Ryan: That is
- 51:10Kearns: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 51:12That's cool
- 51:13Ryan: Uh, okay
- 51:15Jon: Yeah, that it's, it's, it's a touch you don't think about until
- 51:19you've seen it 150 times maybe
- 51:21Ryan: I was gonna say this is my second time watching it and I
- 51:23didn't like, it didn't sink in.
- 51:26Jon: This is the, second time I watched it this year.
- 51:31Kearns: you to watch it closely too, though, so that's also kind of a
- 51:34Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 51:35Mm-hmm.
- 51:36Kearns: right
- 51:36Jon: Yeah, so, so when you watch it closely, you catch more of it.
- 51:40Trash in the cemetery talking about dying and the way she would wanna die
- 51:46the least, and it's the way she dies.
- 51:49when, Bert and Ernie
- 51:54Yep.
- 51:54Bert and Ernie are putting like the split dogs and the cadaver parts into
- 51:58the crematoria, and Frank is sitting there and he says, "As some favor,
- 52:04I could operate that thing myself."
- 52:07And he, then he does.
- 52:09Like there's, there's just so many of those, those little things and then,
- 52:13and then the little gags throughout too.
- 52:16You have… Did you catch the eye chart in the background in the warehouse?
- 52:19Kearns: No
- 52:21Ryan: Oh.
- 52:23Jon: No, you didn't catch it either, Ryan?
- 52:25Ryan: No
- 52:25Jon: says, "Burt is a slave driver and a cheap son of a
- 52:29bitch who's going bald too."
- 52:32Kearns: Oh, that's great.
- 52:35That's great.
- 52:36I like
- 52:37Jon: I, but there's, just so many funny little things kicked in through here.
- 52:43You know, the, the repeated "Send more" on, the radios, "Send more paramedics,"
- 52:50"Send more cops." You know, like, there's… It's just like it, it
- 52:56balances the moments of absolute gore and violence with these goofy things
- 53:02that sort of, like, move it along.
- 53:04And then that sort of rolls into another part of this is the depth of the
- 53:11creation of some of these characters.
- 53:12Ernie, when you fir- when you first see Ernie, he's lis- listening
- 53:17to a German military march.
- 53:19He's got a German weapon.
- 53:22He's got the name of a dead SS guy.
- 53:29Ernest Kaltenbrunner is a real SS guy.
- 53:33Ryan: Yeah, he
- 53:33Jon: Like, so, so they're trading on th- this possibility that
- 53:37the mortician is a fugitive Nazi
- 53:41Kearns: That's actually pretty interesting
- 53:44Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 53:45Kearns: Pretty interesting
- 53:46Ryan: He's like, and he's like an anti-antagonist
- 53:50Kearns: He's a goofball
- 53:51Ryan: like on the thin line, goofball antagonist on the thin line
- 53:58Jon: Yeah, he's, he's not, like he's, he's a, he's a good
- 54:03guy with probably a shady past
- 54:07Ryan: Yes, see that
- 54:09Jon: You know, who, who found a job where he doesn't have to deal with
- 54:12people and can just sort of be in the background and out of the public eye and,
- 54:18Kearns: Make his
- 54:19Jon: you know, fade out.
- 54:21Yeah.
- 54:25Kearns: Pinning be- him being a Nazi on him is kind of a,
- 54:28a rough way to go about it.
- 54:31Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 54:32Kearns: heading to
- 54:32Jon: Yeah
- 54:33Kearns: just gonna tick out the old clock in Argentina.
- 54:36how do you guys feel about the ending of this movie?
- 54:40Ryan: Accurate.
- 54:41Kearns: Yeah, I…
- 54:42Ryan: Very
- 54:43Jon: I mean
- 54:44Kearns: time they, that we've seen this type of ending.
- 54:46So for everybody, at this point we always give you the disclaimer
- 54:49if you haven't watched the movie, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
- 54:50Especially if you see part two, 'cause that's when we spoil
- 54:52the hell out of everything.
- 54:54So if you haven't seen Return of the Living Dead, first of all,
- 54:56it's been like 27 million years so… What is it, almost 40 now?
- 54:59Or 41.
- 55:01Jon: 41.
- 55:0241.
- 55:04Kearns: the government uses a tactical micro-nuke to take
- 55:07care of the problem, and, uh,
- 55:11Jon: Mm-hmm
- 55:11Kearns: w- I enjoyed that that was 100 billion percent exactly what
- 55:16would happen in that situation.
- 55:18Jon: Oh,
- 55:19Kearns: And it,
- 55:20Jon: definitely.
- 55:21Kearns: too, so it's not like a small
- 55:22Jon: Yeah, it's a… Yeah
- 55:25Kearns: Kentucky.
- 55:29And it
- 55:29Jon: Yeah.
- 55:30And, and,
- 55:31Kearns: brand
- 55:32Jon: mm-hmm.
- 55:33Yeah, yeah.
- 55:34It, it, 'cause it d- it just, they nuke it and the same thing happens.
- 55:38Like, you, you eliminate the problem for a minute, but you've now put all
- 55:43the gas back up into the air, and then the rain, and it starts all over again
- 55:49Kearns: I wonder how far it would
- 55:50Jon: what, what I f… I mean,
- 55:53Kearns: like, does it dilute,
- 55:54Jon: at that point it
- 55:55Kearns: further it goes?
- 55:56'Cause remember the, um, the train accident in Ohio
- 55:59and everybody was worried?
- 56:01I remember I was outside with my kids and the r- it started to rain.
- 56:04I was like, "Ah, I don't like this one bit. Let's go inside." And I was wondering
- 56:08Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:09Kearns: of toxic gas
- 56:11Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 56:13Mm-hmm.
- 56:14And then, I mean, I think the best part about that, part makes it even more
- 56:19realistic is the colonel is talking on the phone after the nuke, and he says…
- 56:24And you don't hear the other side, but you hear his part of the conversation.
- 56:28He's saying, "Yes, I understand the president is gonna
- 56:30visit Louisville tomorrow.
- 56:32yes, it would be, it'd be really bad.
- 56:35Yes, yes." And, you know, that's right on brand too that the president of the, of
- 56:41the United States has to go straight to the disaster zone to, to show he supports
- 56:46these people, to score his political points, when the reality is those things
- 56:51are always way too stressful for the people in that area whose infrastructure
- 56:56has just been destroyed to…
- 56:59Yeah.
- 57:00They don't need the president
- 57:02Kearns: need the Red Cross rains and more cops and more paramedics.
- 57:07Jon: Yeah.
- 57:08Kearns: Send
- 57:09Jon: Send more paramedics.
- 57:13They, keep some of those gags up in two also.
- 57:16I watched two the other day, uh, you know, just to… 'cause I do that.
- 57:21and there's a scene in that where they're in the hospital and they're on
- 57:25the radio with what turns out to be a zombie, but the zombie's talking to them.
- 57:29So finally the guy on the radio says, "Who's the president?" And the zombie
- 57:34stops for a second, and you see it sort of processing, and he said, "Harry Truman."
- 57:41Kearns: That's when that guy ate it, when Harry Truman was
- 57:44Jon: Yep.
- 57:45Kearns: pretty funny.
- 57:45I like it.
- 57:46Jon: Yeah
- 57:47Kearns: All right.
- 57:48mean, I thought it ended, very well, especially for the type of movie it was.
- 57:52think it's time that we jump into some reviews, gentlemen
- 57:56Jon: Yeah.
- 57:58So, Return of the Living Dead is a 71% critic score
- 58:04Ryan: Okay
- 58:04Jon: 80% audience score
- 58:08Yeah.
- 58:09So, we have this five-star review.
- 58:13"Many would agree when I say that the 1980s was the best era of horror, and this
- 58:19movie is the crème de la crème of horror comedies." Yeah, we're getting fancy here.
- 58:25"The perfect combination of camp and horror, this movie, with all its technical
- 58:31flaws, is a blend of great casting, super memorable dialogue, an awesome
- 58:38soundtrack, and of course, zombies.
- 58:42Best zombie movie ever."
- 58:45Kearns: I,
- 58:46Ryan: Ooh,
- 58:47Kearns: the high praise.
- 58:48I enjoy the high praise, but I don't know if it's the best zombie movie ever
- 58:53Jon: Mm, yeah.
- 58:54I mean, I know it's not.
- 58:55It's, it's up there.
- 58:56It, it's up there.
- 58:58Um, and we have this one star, and this one-star review is from a guy who
- 59:03thinks he can do the makeup himself
- 59:06Ryan: Oh
- 59:09Jon: One star.
- 59:10Can't even believe all the good ratings.
- 59:14POS of a movie, bad acting, improvised scenario written by a five-year-old?
- 59:22Zombies are as zombie-- zombies are as zombie as I would be with some makeup.
- 59:28Wow, can't even describe how shitty this was
- 59:35Ryan: Uh,
- 59:35Jon: this guy thinks he could sit at home and do that makeup
- 59:38Kearns: Yeah.
- 59:38Ryan: that review
- 59:39Kearns: That's the part of the review that makes him completely
- 59:41disqualified from making that review.
- 59:44see f- I can see somebody, like, being a Romero fan or something
- 59:47like that not vibing with this movie because of the shtick and
- 59:50whatnot, but you can't go after the
- 59:52Jon: Absolutely.
- 59:53Kearns: after the makeup
- 59:55Jon: No, they, it, they don't miss with the makeup.
- 59:59And then we have this one.
- 1:00:02It's a half star.
- 1:00:05Uh, half star.
- 1:00:07This is the zombie movie that gave the genre, period, the laughable rep-
- 1:00:12reputation it carried for so many years.
- 1:00:16This movie is so hard to watch and extremely cringe-worthy.
- 1:00:21A recommendation only for those who are looking to laugh at the
- 1:00:26stupidity of an '80s horror flick
- 1:00:28Kearns: it's for.
- 1:00:29That's, that's what
- 1:00:31Jon: Yes, that's ex- it's the exact point of this movie
- 1:00:36Kearns: you, I mean, if you go in looking for, like it's not scary at all.
- 1:00:40So if you're going in looking for
- 1:00:42Jon: No, no
- 1:00:43Kearns: of these people are coming from, but it's also like really, did
- 1:00:46it get you so aggravated that you couldn't understand what it was that
- 1:00:48you got online and had to write a
- 1:00:50Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:52Kearns: Grr.
- 1:00:53Jon: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:54Ryan: film.
- 1:00:55Like, accept it.
- 1:00:56fun
- 1:00:57Kearns: I bet you that guy loved
- 1:00:58Jon: Yeah.
- 1:00:58Kearns: Like,
- 1:01:01Anyway
- 1:01:02Jon: I went and looked, he doesn't have any other reviews
- 1:01:05Kearns: it was just this movie that got him going.
- 1:01:07Jon: This is the only review this guy has posted
- 1:01:10Kearns: an account for Return of the Living Dead
- 1:01:15Jon: I'm so mad about "Return of the Living Dead," I'm gonna create a Rotten
- 1:01:21Tomatoes account and I'm going to review "Return of the Living Dead,"
- 1:01:25and only "Return of the Living Dead."
- 1:01:27Kearns: uh, Xenomania John reviews up on Rotten Tomatoes for all the movies we do.
- 1:01:33Jon: We should.
- 1:01:34Kearns: do one for every
- 1:01:34Jon: We should.
- 1:01:36Kearns: just to counteract some of these
- 1:01:37Jon: Speaking, speaking of our reviews, I told you what some other people think.
- 1:01:44How about you guys?
- 1:01:45Kearns: Ryan?
- 1:01:46gonna go first tonight
- 1:01:47Ryan: I'm gonna, go with a 3.75 out of five stars.
- 1:01:52It, um, hits with the comedy.
- 1:01:55Again, it's not scary, but it's not supposed to be scary.
- 1:01:58It's supposed to be fun.
- 1:02:00like-- I wanna say it's like what Scream did for slasher, where it was like a
- 1:02:05satire of that genre or that subgenre.
- 1:02:08That's what Return of the Living Dead is.
- 1:02:10It's like kind of be- a satire of the like zombie film genre, that subgenre,
- 1:02:16but it does it in a, in a way where it's unique, and it created its own fan base.
- 1:02:22the acting, it is what it is.
- 1:02:24It does what it does.
- 1:02:26It's not the best, but it hits every right spot.
- 1:02:29It's goofy, it's fun, it's suspenseful when it needs to be suspenseful,
- 1:02:34and the ending's realistic.
- 1:02:363.75 out of five
- 1:02:38Kearns: All right.
- 1:02:39I'm gonna go a little higher
- 1:02:40Jon: right
- 1:02:41Kearns: and hit it with a four, just for, like, in understanding, the spirit of what
- 1:02:45it is and what it's trying to do, too.
- 1:02:48And my original take on the movie, I did not watch the whole thing when I
- 1:02:52was, like, 13 and it came on, 'cause I was expecting Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:02:57I saw it again later in life, and I recognized what movie it
- 1:03:00was and what it was trying to do, and I appreciated it a lot more.
- 1:03:04and then the humor and stuff gets me every time.
- 1:03:06I know this is a horror podcast and stuff like that, but I mean, I like this movie.
- 1:03:12So I'm gonna give it a… I'm gonna go up to a four with it.
- 1:03:14It's, it's a good hang.
- 1:03:17It's a reliable good hang
- 1:03:21Jon: Hmm.
- 1:03:23Well, I'm gonna be significantly higher than you guys.
- 1:03:26we talked in the open, this is my, probably my second favorite
- 1:03:30movie in the world, behind Dawn, and we know what I rated Dawn.
- 1:03:34Dawn was a blue star.
- 1:03:36Return of Living Dead is a blue star movie for me.
- 1:03:39Ryan: Yeah
- 1:03:39Jon: a, this is, this is… You c- I, I know how you guys feel about
- 1:03:44Shaun of the Dead and some of the…
- 1:03:46This is the peak zombie comedy for me.
- 1:03:50This is as good as you can do this, and it's in spite of everything
- 1:03:55I like about the zombie genre.
- 1:03:57It's not, it's not scary.
- 1:04:00It's not slow zombies.
- 1:04:01It's not, you know, they talk, but it hits every note, and it's hit every
- 1:04:07note really since I was a little kid and I watched this for the first time.
- 1:04:11You know, whether, you know, when I was a little kid, it was
- 1:04:14the goofiness and the boobs.
- 1:04:16But now it's this whole package, and yeah, Return of the Living
- 1:04:20Dead is a blue star for me
- 1:04:24Ryan: Nicely
- 1:04:24Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:25I wasn't expecting that to be a blue star.
- 1:04:27That was a big surprise for me
- 1:04:29Ryan: I had, I had a feeling 'cause I don't know, you, you
- 1:04:33Jon: I mean,
- 1:04:33Ryan: about this film
- 1:04:35Jon: I have three hats.
- 1:04:36I have how many shirts?
- 1:04:37I have posters.
- 1:04:39I have a Tarman action figure in here somewhere.
- 1:04:42I have, like…
- 1:04:43Kearns: Yeah.
- 1:04:43I
- 1:04:44Jon: Yeah.
- 1:04:45I've bought it in every format you can buy a movie in
- 1:04:49Kearns: a visual of one day of, um, every movie we blue starred.
- 1:04:52I've got one, you've got two.
- 1:04:54I don't think Ryan's got one yet, does he?
- 1:04:57Jon: Ryan had one knife.
- 1:04:59Or did we…
- 1:05:00Ryan: I…
- 1:05:00Jon: We might have talked Ryan out of his blue star.
- 1:05:02He tried to blue star
- 1:05:04Kearns: 'Cause he knew it was, I was gonna blue star it or you
- 1:05:06were gonna blue star it, right?
- 1:05:08Ryan: There are, there are, I will say this, there are
- 1:05:12two Blue Star films coming up
- 1:05:13Kearns: Okay.
- 1:05:14Ryan: me.
- 1:05:15One very, one very
- 1:05:16Kearns: Oh, it's gonna be Halloween.
- 1:05:17Jon: Yeah, I th- I th-
- 1:05:19Ryan: Uh,
- 1:05:19Jon: I, have one more Blue Star coming up this year, I think.
- 1:05:24And I think that, I, I think that… I'm not gonna reveal that.
- 1:05:27But I d- I think with our concept of the Blue Star, that's
- 1:05:32kind of the right proportion.
- 1:05:34we will have covered 52 movies this year.
- 1:05:38I think three is about the right number f- to be that good.
- 1:05:42When, you're curating it yourself, like it's not like these are random
- 1:05:48movies and three out of 52 got here.
- 1:05:50I'm picking the movies that we're doing on here, so I should be picking things are
- 1:05:55g- that are going to be near that level, or I'm picking things for another reason.
- 1:06:01But
- 1:06:01Ryan: you're pretty fair too because you choose movies that, like, some
- 1:06:05people have rated, like, very low, and
- 1:06:08Jon: Mm-hmm
- 1:06:09Ryan: own take and all that.
- 1:06:10I feel like we have a good fairness on what we watch
- 1:06:14Kearns: Yeah
- 1:06:15Jon: I think so.
- 1:06:16I thi- yeah.
- 1:06:18I would agree with that.
- 1:06:19But I think, it's, you know, three out of 52 if I'm curating it is a nice ratio.
- 1:06:25That's 6% over the course of the year.
- 1:06:28It's pro- it,
- 1:06:30Kearns: a year
- 1:06:31Jon: it would-- But it also wouldn't be, three out of 52 in, like, if I was just
- 1:06:38putting on a movie I'd never seen before.
- 1:06:40It might not be any of 52 at that point.
- 1:06:44Let's go to top fives
- 1:06:45Kearns: Ryan, top five
- 1:06:47Ryan: fives, I'm doing spiritual sequels tonight and We're gonna start off
- 1:06:53with number five, Enemy of the State.
- 1:06:57So Enemy of the State stars Will Smith as well as Gene Hackman, which focuses
- 1:07:02on a labor lawyer who becomes the target of a covert surveillance operation after
- 1:07:06unwilingly, unwillingly, um, unwittingly
- 1:07:10Jon: And willingly
- 1:07:11Ryan: unwittingly, uh, receiving evidence of a political assassination.
- 1:07:15Thank you.
- 1:07:16Now, the interesting thing, um, now, what I, I mentioned earlier with spiritual
- 1:07:20sequels, it's either the character, the story, uh, similar theme, similar
- 1:07:24plot, maybe similar directors, actors.
- 1:07:27And what makes Enemy of the State a spiritual sequel is with a movie
- 1:07:32called The Conversation, made in 1974 directed and written by Francis Ford
- 1:07:37Coppola, which stars Gene Hackman as the surveillance expert Harry Caul.
- 1:07:42And the connection is Harry Caul is Gene Hackman's character with a different
- 1:07:48name in Enemy of the State, and that's what makes it a spiritual sequel,
- 1:07:52which I've always liked watching that.
- 1:07:54And I like The Conversation more.
- 1:07:56Like, Enemy of the State's a good movie, The Conversation,
- 1:08:00I like that political thriller.
- 1:08:02And to see, like, the possibility of what Harry's been up to and seeing that
- 1:08:08supposed character pop up in Enemy of the State was a nice, little popcorn moment.
- 1:08:14To which we get to number four.
- 1:08:17one we've talked about before.
- 1:08:18I'm a big James Bond fan, so when you get a spiritual sequel with my
- 1:08:22favorite James Bond, Sean Connery, in The Rock with Nicolas Cage
- 1:08:26and Ed Harris, it's, it's great.
- 1:08:29the plot follows, of course, a former SAS captain, played by Connery, and an
- 1:08:33FBI chemist, played by Cage, who attempt to disarm missiles from a rogue group of
- 1:08:38Force Recon Marines who have taken control of the former prison on Alcatraz Island.
- 1:08:42the idea that Connery, of course plays an MI6 agent in The Rock, but it goes to the
- 1:08:50idea that James Bond was only a codename.
- 1:08:54Like, each actor, that's why James Bond was different.
- 1:08:57And I mean, they mess with the lore a little bit because Roger Moore's, uh,
- 1:09:01James Bond visits, uh, Tracy's grave, which is connection to George Lazenby,
- 1:09:06and Sean Connery's Bond makes a reference to Tracy in Diamonds Are Forever.
- 1:09:10And same thing with Pierce Brosnan in The World Is Not
- 1:09:13Enough, and Never Dies to Tracy.
- 1:09:16So there's a question, but originally they were gonna have it where each
- 1:09:21actor was a different version of Bond.
- 1:09:25It was a different person, and that's why The Rock is so unique 'cause it goes
- 1:09:29with that idea that character could've been Bond in an alternate universe.
- 1:09:36nice touch and a nice spiritual sequel, which this one, and Ladies and
- 1:09:41gentlemen, if you are, if, uh, not if you are, when you're listening, and
- 1:09:45if you wanna mention some spiritual sequels, throw some out there, please
- 1:09:49do so, because this one, this one's gonna be rock- rocky or interesting.
- 1:09:53If you guys wanna throw in your opinions, please.
- 1:09:55And that's Carlito's Way, directed by Brian De Palma, screenplay by David Koepp.
- 1:10:02It focuses on, Carlito Brigante who gets out of jail, and he's kinda
- 1:10:07trying to get out of the criminal life, but he's getting pulled into.
- 1:10:11And it's considered a spiritual sequel to Scarface because the idea of Tony
- 1:10:15Montana, also directed by Brian De Palma, he's trying to become a crime boss.
- 1:10:21He's getting into crime.
- 1:10:22He's growing, and it shows his rise, while with Carlito, it's him trying
- 1:10:27to, to like live a normal life after experiencing the crime life.
- 1:10:32And it's got a similar setting, similar director, of course, both Al Pacino
- 1:10:36playing opposite sides of the coin.
- 1:10:39But the connection is that vibe and how both stories reflect like
- 1:10:45on the growth of crime as well as trying to get out of crime.
- 1:10:48It was an interesting concept I was reading about, and it took
- 1:10:52a lot of convincing on my end, so figured I'd throw that out.
- 1:10:55This one I feel like, I don't know if you guys would agree with me, but it's Casino.
- 1:11:00It's a spiritual successor or a sequel to Goodfellas.
- 1:11:05it, it's, it's all on the vibe.
- 1:11:07Kearns: I could get behind that
- 1:11:09Ryan: De Niro.
- 1:11:11Yeah, I mean, like De Niro plays a similar character.
- 1:11:13Joe Pesci definitely plays a similar character.
- 1:11:16Scorsese, of course, is behind it.
- 1:11:18Nicholas Pileggi, writes it along with Scorsese again.
- 1:11:23it's-- I know, I, I messed up his name.
- 1:11:26I'm trying here.
- 1:11:27I'm, I'm overthinking it, but it's like that same vibe, same you know, gangster.
- 1:11:34I mean, the only difference, it's Las Vegas during the '70s compared
- 1:11:38to New York during the '50s.
- 1:11:41And this leads to my number one.
- 1:11:42This is my favorite spiritual sequel, and I, I want someone to actually
- 1:11:48like try to not make this make sense, but it's High Plains Drifter.
- 1:11:53So it's directed by Clint Eastwood, written by Ernest Tidyman, and it's about,
- 1:11:58uh, Eastwood, who's a mysterious stranger, a man with no name, meets-- who, uh,
- 1:12:04goes to like a town that, it's a frontier mining town, for basically revenge,
- 1:12:10and that's how I'm gonna leave it.
- 1:12:11But character is the man with no name from The Man with No Name trilogy.
- 1:12:17Same everything, and like there's like nods to Sergio Leone.
- 1:12:22There's nods to Don Siegel, who directed him in, I think, The Outlaw Josey Wales
- 1:12:28Kearns: I believe you are correct
- 1:12:30Ryan: So there's like homages to that, to those directors.
- 1:12:34But it's just how he carries himself and how he acts.
- 1:12:38It's 100% The Man With No Name.
- 1:12:40It's like the fourth film in that perfect trilogy.
- 1:12:43But Clint Eastwood kind of closes it up as this, like, man who's
- 1:12:48just traveling in the West, like, just doing his due diligence.
- 1:12:52And I mean, there's more to it when you get to Pale Rider, but I feel like that's
- 1:12:57a whole different character in itself.
- 1:12:59But those are my top five spiritual sequels.
- 1:13:02And well, what's your top five tonight?
- 1:13:06I'm
- 1:13:06Kearns: Before John starts, Philo-
- 1:13:08Jon: Okay
- 1:13:09Kearns: directed Outlaw Josey Wales
- 1:13:12Ryan: I'll look.
- 1:13:13Okay, so which… Was it Hingham High was Don Siegel then?
- 1:13:17to be
- 1:13:18Kearns: I should have probably checked that before I dropped the intel.
- 1:13:20Let's see.
- 1:13:23If I do that, Duel at Silver Creek, Flaming Star, Death of a Gunfighter.
- 1:13:27Two Mules for Sister Sara.
- 1:13:29the one
- 1:13:32Ryan: All right.
- 1:13:33I was gonna say that was one of his popular films after The Man
- 1:13:36Kearns: Mm-hmm.
- 1:13:38So there might be another one in there, but I don't know.
- 1:13:40All right, John, you're up, buddy.
- 1:13:42Top five
- 1:13:43Jon: All right.
- 1:13:44So as we mentioned, Return of the Living Dead was written
- 1:13:48and directed by Dan O'Bannon.
- 1:13:50So my top five this week is top five Dan O'Bannon projects, and you'll- you're
- 1:13:58gonna be surprised b- based on my rating of Return where it winds up on this list.
- 1:14:03But number five is a movie called Lifeforce, which was directed by
- 1:14:10Tobe Hooper, who was originally, little bit of trivia, supposed to
- 1:14:14direct Return of the Living Dead.
- 1:14:17Mm-hmm.
- 1:14:19So in Lifeforce, which O'Bannon did the screenplay for, the English send
- 1:14:24a space shuttle, the space shuttle Churchill, to observe Halley's Comet.
- 1:14:29they find something attached to the tail.
- 1:14:32Colonel Tom Carlsen goes in for a closer look.
- 1:14:36when he returns to Earth, he has a female space vampire in tow.
- 1:14:41vampire gets free, wreaks havoc in London.
- 1:14:44lot of nudity in this one, too.
- 1:14:46Seems to be O'Bannon's kinda thing.
- 1:14:48and an appearance by Patrick Stewart way before Star Trek
- 1:14:54Ryan: So need to watch that film.
- 1:14:56But do you think the film would've been different if Toby Hooper directed it?
- 1:15:01Jon: Return of Living, absolutely.
- 1:15:03As I don't think you get the Return… I don't think Return of the Living Dead
- 1:15:06gets a blue star from me with Tobe Hooper
- 1:15:10Ryan: Really?
- 1:15:10Okay.
- 1:15:11Jon: I don't, I don't think he's got the style to make it work, but, you know.
- 1:15:18my number four is a movie we all love, I think.
- 1:15:23and Dan O'Bannon did the screenplay for my number four, which is Total Recall.
- 1:15:29Kearns: Nice
- 1:15:30Jon: Um, in space, recurring, yeah, returning visions of Mars, comes to
- 1:15:37find the dream is better than reality, so and so, adapted from Philip K. Dick.
- 1:15:43Mainly just threw that in so I could say Dick.
- 1:15:46but yeah, that's number four is Total Recall.
- 1:15:48Number three, I believe I've put on the list before, Dan O'Bannon did
- 1:15:53the screenplay for Dead and Buried.
- 1:15:56so you get Sheriff Dan Gillis has a seemingly perfect life running the
- 1:16:01police force in coastal Potter's Bluff.
- 1:16:04That is, until visitors are mysteriously killed, which is made worse by the
- 1:16:09fact they seem to be reanimating.
- 1:16:12As he investigates, it also seems possible his wife is responsible for the killings.
- 1:16:18you get a pre-Freddy Robert Englund in this one also.
- 1:16:22So it's like, again, so far we really haven't seen the humor that O'Bannon put
- 1:16:27into "Return of the Living Dead," but it's sort of the breadth of his capacity as
- 1:16:33a writer, which you're gonna get when we get to number one, you're gonna realize.
- 1:16:37number two, probably a shock based on how I've talked about it for the last hour and
- 1:16:43a half, is "Return of the Living Dead".
- 1:16:45it's my number two Dan O'Bannon project because number one is
- 1:16:50just so inarguably a great movie.
- 1:16:53but you know, this is screenplay directing, y- you know, I, I've,
- 1:16:58I've s- I can go on for like probably two or three more hours
- 1:17:01about "Return of the Living Dead".
- 1:17:03I'm not going to, especially not in the top five.
- 1:17:06I'm just gonna say "Return of the Living Dead" is two.
- 1:17:08And my number one, he wrote the screenplay for a movie we have never covered,
- 1:17:15but clearly plays a huge role in our existence, and that movie is Alien
- 1:17:26Alien is a Dan O'Bannon script.
- 1:17:30Yep,
- 1:17:31Ryan: too.
- 1:17:31Good movie
- 1:17:33Jon: Yep, it's the king of the space sci-fi horror movies.
- 1:17:37You know, you, you get Ripley and Xenomorphs and face huggers and
- 1:17:44the voice of the, lady that does voices on The Simpsons, Yaphet
- 1:17:48Kotto, Hurt, all these people.
- 1:17:51Ryan: The
- 1:17:51Jon: Alien is… And when, we get to Alien somewhere down the road, I'm
- 1:17:56gonna give you the spoiler now, this will be another blue star, but we-
- 1:18:01I haven't even scheduled Alien yet because that's a long, long episode.
- 1:18:06And a l- you know,
- 1:18:08Ryan: Eh, we got
- 1:18:09Jon: it's, it's gonna be a long episode
- 1:18:12Ryan: Three
- 1:18:12Kearns: Might have to be.
- 1:18:15Might have
- 1:18:15Jon: have, might have to be multiple episodes.
- 1:18:19But we'll get to it.
- 1:18:20We'll get to it.
- 1:18:21And that's my, my top five Dan O'Bannons.
- 1:18:24If I missed something that you're really attached to, throw it
- 1:18:27in the comments, let me know.
- 1:18:28I think, I think this is a pretty good list, though
- 1:18:31Kearns: That was a good list
- 1:18:33Ryan: I didn't know he wrote Alien, and I,
- 1:18:35Jon: Yeah.
- 1:18:36Ryan: saw that as a part of the October challenge, and, uh, movie still holds up.
- 1:18:42You're, like, i- if you, like, so I was, real quick, is you talk
- 1:18:48about and it's the whole debate what's better, Alien or Aliens?
- 1:18:51And it's really unfair thinking about it as I've gotten older,
- 1:18:55'cause they're two different movies.
- 1:18:57Aliens is more action-adventure, and Alien is more horror.
- 1:19:01Jon: Yeah.
- 1:19:02Ryan: And
- 1:19:02Jon: In
- 1:19:03Ryan: tries to take it back, but that's a whole other story
- 1:19:06Jon: Alien 3 g- almost gets more to being a sci-fi movie, but we can talk
- 1:19:10about that in a, a future episode.
- 1:19:13Alien's a true horror movie.
- 1:19:15I think for me, Alien is the better of the, of Alien versus Aliens,
- 1:19:20but I understand people who think Aliens is too, because it's great
- 1:19:26Kearns: Aliens is great.
- 1:19:28movie.
- 1:19:30Different
- 1:19:30Jon: Yep
- 1:19:32Kearns: All right, guys, it is time for us to get out of here.
- 1:19:35Hope you enjoyed returning to the living dead with us
- 1:19:39Ryan: Yep.
- 1:19:41And next week we got Halloween, 1978.
- 1:19:44Jon: Yep.
- 1:19:45Kearns: likely
- 1:19:45Jon: The OG.
- 1:19:46Kearns: on the,
- 1:19:48Jon: The OG
- 1:19:49Ryan: It's the, it's the boogeyman
- 1:19:53Kearns: All right, everybody, you have a good night.
- 1:19:55We're outta here
- 1:20:00Jon: Say it.
