- 0:00Speaker 1: What do you mean it's totaled.
- 0:01Speaker 2: It's one more thing.
- 0:05Speaker 3: One more thing.
- 0:07Speaker 4: I always love it when it's a staff led One
- 0:10Speaker 4: more Thing podcast is Michael's got his story in a
- 0:12Speaker 4: moment before we get to John Stewart interviewing Elmo, why
- 0:16Speaker 4: was Elmo in the news or does he explain that
- 0:17Speaker 4: in the setup here?
- 0:18Speaker 5: Elmo's in the news for something.
- 0:19Speaker 6: Elmo went rogue on Twitter. He got hot, he got hacked,
- 0:23Speaker 6: or so he says, and started saying that we should
- 0:26Speaker 6: kill the Jews.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Right, of course, everybody claims, oh I got hacked. Elmo's
- 0:30Speaker 2: a Nazi.
- 0:31Speaker 5: Allegedly, Elmo and Groc both went after the Jews in
- 0:34Speaker 5: the same week.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Yep, little red Elmo's a brown shirt. What do you know?
- 0:39Speaker 5: John Stewart on The Daily Show talked to Elmo and
- 0:43Speaker 5: after a hacker posted racist and anti Semitic remarks to
- 0:46Speaker 5: the Sesme Street characters, ex.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Account, Elmo, you know what we're here to talk about,
- 0:57Speaker 3: oh Jews.
- 1:00Speaker 6: That's right.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Elmo was radicalized by the Mano sphere. Elmo is part
- 1:09Speaker 3: of the male loneliness epidemic. You see what happened was
- 1:19Speaker 3: Almo was doing his own research on.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Flu shots.
- 1:26Speaker 5: Six hours later, because of the algorithm, Elmo was moderating
- 1:32Speaker 5: the Q and on.
- 1:33Speaker 7: Discord chat.
- 1:37Speaker 2: And building homemade bombs.
- 1:41Speaker 5: Oh wow, so wo mano sphere. I don't know if
- 1:46Speaker 5: I've heard of that term. Oh yeah, yeah, meaning.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, this stuff just exhausts.
- 1:55Speaker 5: Me each other online.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Yeah that and like you you're what's what's the alleged
- 2:01Speaker 2: rapist in five different countries?
- 2:04Speaker 5: Brothers?
- 2:05Speaker 2: Oh yeah, Tate brothers. Yeah, and just like hyper masculine
- 2:14Speaker 2: down with women, hardcore new right, angry online thing. We're
- 2:23Speaker 2: you going to contribute something.
- 2:24Speaker 6: Just anti feminist. They're super anti feminist.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Only Yeah, it kind of depends what you mean by that,
- 2:30Speaker 2: but yeah, yeah, in kind of a corrosive way.
- 2:33Speaker 5: And then what was that next? The no, the next phrase,
- 2:41Speaker 5: the manisphere was like the men young men, single, lonely.
- 2:45Speaker 6: Men, the loneliness epidemic, the.
- 2:47Speaker 5: Loneliness epidemic among men. Okay, yeah, has got part to
- 2:51Speaker 5: do with the manisphere. That's part of the in cell
- 2:54Speaker 5: crowd thing, right, the whole Well, they're all.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Kind of overlapping, but yeah, yeah, and a lot of
- 3:01Speaker 2: this stuff has a fair amount of legit to it
- 3:04Speaker 2: always takes it completely over the top. I mean young
- 3:07Speaker 2: men trying to find a sane young woman who'd like
- 3:09Speaker 2: to be in a relationship. It's a challenge.
- 3:13Speaker 5: But now, if you were like me when I was
- 3:16Speaker 5: a teenager alone, woman wise, girlfriend wise, I would be
- 3:23Speaker 5: convinced by the Internet to blame it on other forces,
- 3:26Speaker 5: not just my lack of game. Well, either the Jews
- 3:32Speaker 5: or one.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Party or the other, or some certain as certain as
- 3:37Speaker 2: a person can be, that the Jews played no role
- 3:41Speaker 2: in any lack of dating success. Sorry, Elmo, Right, that
- 3:49Speaker 2: is a pretty funny bit.
- 3:50Speaker 5: Yes, I was. Okay, So what do you mean it's
- 3:53Speaker 5: total Michael says, yeah.
- 3:57Speaker 1: So I'm driving on the highway and I think I
- 3:58Speaker 1: may have told you this.
- 4:00Speaker 7: I got hit by a nineteen year old kid who
- 4:02Speaker 7: was uninsured, had no car insurance whatsoever. So I end
- 4:07Speaker 7: up taking my car to the body shop. I've got
- 4:09Speaker 7: car insurance, so I'm fine. And so I got a
- 4:11Speaker 7: rental car. I've been driving a rental car for the
- 4:13Speaker 7: you know, a week or two. So they I go
- 4:16Speaker 7: into the body shop and they say, okay, it's gonna
- 4:19Speaker 7: be about ten thousand dollars to repair. This is what
- 4:21Speaker 7: we're gonna have to pay but you have a five
- 4:22Speaker 7: hundred dollars deductible, you'll pay five hundred dollars.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I said, great.
- 4:27Speaker 7: So nothing happens, and then like three days later, they say, hey,
- 4:30Speaker 7: we need you to come back into the body shop.
- 4:32Speaker 1: I come in. They've got a new estimate for me.
- 4:34Speaker 7: They say, just so you know, the car's now going
- 4:35Speaker 7: to be sixteen thousand dollars to repair. You're still going
- 4:39Speaker 7: to pay five hundred dollars. I say, okay, fine. So
- 4:42Speaker 7: I'm waiting waiting and I don't hear from these people,
- 4:44Speaker 7: and so I call them.
- 4:46Speaker 1: And say, hey, what's happening with my car.
- 4:48Speaker 7: They said, well, we haven't heard from the insurance company,
- 4:50Speaker 7: so we're waiting. The next day, I get a call
- 4:53Speaker 7: from my insurance company. They say, oh, yeah, your car's totaled.
- 4:56Speaker 7: We're just going to send you a check. And so
- 4:58Speaker 7: I get a check for twenty three thousand dollars for
- 5:02Speaker 7: my car, which I bought the car for twenty seven
- 5:05Speaker 7: thousand dollars. And the point is is that cars have
- 5:08Speaker 7: moved up so much in price that it is now
- 5:14Speaker 7: when a car gets totaled or just you know, maybe
- 5:18Speaker 7: dented or crash, they don't even prepare it anymore. They're
- 5:21Speaker 7: just writing people checks. I had somebody explain this to
- 5:24Speaker 7: me once, but my memory is vague. I can't imagine
- 5:27Speaker 7: why they would say, no, we're not going to pay
- 5:29Speaker 7: the fifteen to five to have it fixed.
- 5:32Speaker 2: We'll just pay twenty three and you can call it good.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I mean, that doesn't make any sense.
- 5:41Speaker 7: I guess this is happening a lot now, So sure
- 5:43Speaker 7: does it work?
- 5:44Speaker 5: Though? Since that other person didn't have insurance, your insurance
- 5:47Speaker 5: is picking up the tab. Aren't they going to raise
- 5:48Speaker 5: your rates?
- 5:49Speaker 7: I hope not, But yeah, I had to pay. I
- 5:51Speaker 7: was supposed to pay the five hundred dollars. I was
- 5:53Speaker 7: just out of the cause.
- 5:54Speaker 5: You know, I don't know if you ask, but like
- 5:56Speaker 5: I when I, uh, what which which are my crashes?
- 5:59Speaker 5: I've had so won my fault, the other's other people's
- 6:03Speaker 5: fault in the last couple of years. I talked to
- 6:05Speaker 5: my insurance guy and he said, yeah, I mean, it'd
- 6:07Speaker 5: be in the long run, it'd be cheaper to just
- 6:09Speaker 5: pay to fix it yourself. Because this is how much
- 6:12Speaker 5: it's going to go up. If you like my motorcycle wreck,
- 6:16Speaker 5: I paid eight grand out of pocket to fix my
- 6:18Speaker 5: motorcycle because it would have cost more in the long
- 6:21Speaker 5: run to have my insurance go up for all my vehicles.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Blah blah blah.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I was more familiar with the being shocked that
- 6:31Speaker 2: they quote unquote totaled it in the era of low
- 6:34Speaker 2: use car values, because what would happen is you'd get
- 6:38Speaker 2: a ten thousand dollars estimate and your company'd say, well,
- 6:40Speaker 2: your car's only worth ninety five hundred bucks, so it's total.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Don't get it fixed. Here's the value. Go do whatever
- 6:46Speaker 2: you want. I gave get that.
- 6:48Speaker 5: But our executive producer Mike Hanson appears to be very
- 6:51Speaker 5: animated to join this conversation for Somery Carbuff notably Carbuff. Yes,
- 6:57Speaker 5: and he's having trouble getting his headphones situated car.
- 7:01Speaker 2: It's very complicated. You got one on the right ear,
- 7:03Speaker 2: one on the left ear.
- 7:05Speaker 6: There's a cord.
- 7:06Speaker 5: The whole fiction in your car thing is such a
- 7:08Speaker 5: freaking scam. I mean, you have the tiniest dent in
- 7:11Speaker 5: the left rear and they want to replace, well, we're
- 7:13Speaker 5: gonna have to replace the pin striping, and then the
- 7:15Speaker 5: plastic thing here and then the where it says Camaro
- 7:18Speaker 5: or whatever it is on your car, and we got
- 7:20Speaker 5: to get a new one of those two Why why
- 7:21Speaker 5: do you have to get a new one of all
- 7:23Speaker 5: of those things?
- 7:23Speaker 2: You go to another place and they'll say, no, we
- 7:25Speaker 2: don't have to do that.
- 7:26Speaker 5: That's crazy.
- 7:27Speaker 2: I did do this and reuse blah blah.
- 7:28Speaker 5: I did no paint dent repair on one of my
- 7:31Speaker 5: vehicles recently. And that's when they come out with these
- 7:33Speaker 5: suction cups and everything to your house and pry out
- 7:36Speaker 5: the dent the best they can and you could barely tell.
- 7:39Speaker 5: And it cost me five hundred dollars on something that
- 7:42Speaker 5: at the dealership they told me it was going to
- 7:44Speaker 5: be eight grand, And for five hundred bucks, I had
- 7:47Speaker 5: the dent pulled out and it's not perfect, but it's
- 7:49Speaker 5: better than spending eight grand. Anyway. Here's a hands in
- 7:52Speaker 5: the producer.
- 7:53Speaker 1: A couple of things.
- 7:55Speaker 2: First of all, I'd ask him to see it to
- 7:57Speaker 2: suck the chrome off a trailer hitch, just to see
- 7:59Speaker 2: if that's an actual thing. Wow, I've heard and I
- 8:04Speaker 2: just don't know.
- 8:06Speaker 5: Katie luckily does not know that expression. So yes, if.
- 8:09Speaker 2: They, if they had powerful enough such an equipment. I
- 8:12Speaker 2: wonder whether that is possible given the principles of metallurgy.
- 8:16Speaker 5: And there are coarse gentlemen that will say there are
- 8:20Speaker 5: some women that could remove the chrome from a trailer.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Hitch, yes, which again would be you know, just forces
- 8:31Speaker 2: at such a level that they would do terrible damage
- 8:33Speaker 2: to say, the human body.
- 8:35Speaker 5: I've never said that in anyone who said it to me.
- 8:37Speaker 5: I have called the police, okay, back to handle. So
- 8:41Speaker 5: in a circumstance such as this, there's a couple of
- 8:43Speaker 5: things that you can do. And I've been down this
- 8:45Speaker 5: path before. I had a car that was totaled and
- 8:48Speaker 5: I told him no, and then they tried to give
- 8:51Speaker 5: me a check and I said no, and so we
- 8:54Speaker 5: got a bigger check because we had to talk about
- 8:56Speaker 5: it a little bit. We had to negotiate some So,
- 8:59Speaker 5: I mean I had to get a bigger check from them,
- 9:01Speaker 5: and I got to keep the car. So if you
- 9:03Speaker 5: start asking for things or demanding them, you don't have
- 9:06Speaker 5: to just take the check, and you shouldn't accept the
- 9:09Speaker 5: value that they put on the vehicle itself. So I
- 9:11Speaker 5: would if you haven't cashed the check, Michael, I'd tell
- 9:14Speaker 5: them to keep it and then say, hey, I want
- 9:16Speaker 5: to come into the office and talk to you about this,
- 9:18Speaker 5: and we'll determine what the value is of this car
- 9:20Speaker 5: and see if you can't squeeze you play some additional
- 9:22Speaker 5: funds out of them. You're a guy that last week
- 9:24Speaker 5: told us the story about you actually contacted the state
- 9:26Speaker 5: insurance commissioner or whatever frightened all lot of people.
- 9:29Speaker 2: Yeah, so, but help us understand if you know, why
- 9:32Speaker 2: would the insurance company say no, no, we're not going
- 9:34Speaker 2: to write a check for sixteen five hundred, We'll write
- 9:37Speaker 2: your check for twenty three thousand instead. Aha, gotcha, I
- 9:41Speaker 2: don't get it.
- 9:42Speaker 5: It could be it could be what Hanson just explained
- 9:45Speaker 5: there where they thought, if they want to negotiate, they're
- 9:48Speaker 5: gonna get way more out of us than this. If
- 9:52Speaker 5: we could just get this ended right now for twenty
- 9:54Speaker 5: three grand, we're in, We're ahead. They might be thinking
- 9:57Speaker 5: that is that your guest hands home?
- 10:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I don't know. I'm just in terms of the
- 10:04Speaker 8: settlement amount.
- 10:05Speaker 3: I mean.
- 10:06Speaker 8: My point is is that you just shouldn't accept whatever
- 10:08Speaker 8: number they give you, even if unless it was beyond
- 10:11Speaker 8: the price that you paid, and you'd be like, hell, yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 8: let's party, let's let's go. I'm gonna go buy this
- 10:15Speaker 8: car and have a really nice dinner tonight.
- 10:16Speaker 5: I gotta admit I would have probably thought they've got
- 10:18Speaker 5: a way to calculate this that they don't budge on.
- 10:20Speaker 5: And they do, of course they do.
- 10:23Speaker 8: They they've got at least, and my circumstances rather dated,
- 10:27Speaker 8: but they they've got all kinds of resources to determine
- 10:30Speaker 8: the value of a vehicle. But my point is is
- 10:33Speaker 8: that you've got some additional things that you could bring
- 10:35Speaker 8: up if you had whatever change you might have made
- 10:37Speaker 8: to the car, whatever, I don't know. There's all kinds
- 10:39Speaker 8: of different arguments that you can make, and at least
- 10:41Speaker 8: it's worth having a conversation with them. And again, they
- 10:44Speaker 8: want to close the case. Here's the leverage that you've
- 10:46Speaker 8: got is they want to close it as soon as possible.
- 10:49Speaker 8: They're trying to get rid of you and move on, right,
- 10:51Speaker 8: So if you don't accept then they have to sit
- 10:53Speaker 8: there and go, well, what's the god my boss can
- 10:56Speaker 8: be so bis to me right now, right, But I
- 10:58Speaker 8: got to get this guy to close this thing out.
- 10:59Speaker 8: So I mean, if you're satisfied with that money, then great,
- 11:03Speaker 8: then take it. My point is, don't be satisfied, don't
- 11:06Speaker 8: accept it. And get as much back as you possibly can.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Okay, Hansen before we wrap this up here, not only
- 11:13Speaker 2: a big car guy, you're a big music fan. So
- 11:16Speaker 2: everybody's starting with Hanson or I can go first if
- 11:18Speaker 2: you want to think about it, favorite car or driving
- 11:21Speaker 2: related song. If you can't settle on one, you can
- 11:24Speaker 2: go with two favorite car or driving related song. Hanson,
- 11:30Speaker 2: do you have an answer right along?
- 11:31Speaker 5: Oh, there's so many. I will go with a passenger
- 11:34Speaker 5: side by Wilco.
- 11:35Speaker 2: Oh. Oh, yeah, you know I'm gonna go. I gotta
- 11:43Speaker 2: get go with two very different moods. Number one racing
- 11:45Speaker 2: in the streets, Bruce Co Champion, Highway Star Deep Purple.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I don't know that song, Katie.
- 11:55Speaker 7: You got a couple of Oh boy, I really I
- 12:00Speaker 7: can't think of one off the top of my head.
- 12:01Speaker 6: I know that's awful, but I can't.
- 12:03Speaker 5: There's a great Johnny Cash song, you know, the Johnny
- 12:05Speaker 5: Cash song where he talks about working at the the
- 12:08Speaker 5: GM factory and he stole parts over the years. Yes,
- 12:10Speaker 5: he assembled a car that was It was a fifty five,
- 12:13Speaker 5: fifty six, fifty seven, fifty eight, fifty nine. He assembled
- 12:16Speaker 5: his car from parts over years. He stole I would
- 12:18Speaker 5: go if ten year old me would choose hot Rod
- 12:20Speaker 5: Lincoln because I love that song. As a fantastic grown
- 12:23Speaker 5: up me probably go Tom Petty running Down a Dream Love.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Oh, that's a good one, Michael.
- 12:30Speaker 1: Oh, I was singing running Down a Dream too, but.
- 12:33Speaker 2: Oh you lie.
- 12:34Speaker 5: Chitty Chitty Bang bang, probably yours.
- 12:36Speaker 2: That's a winner.
- 12:38Speaker 1: That is a good one, though.
- 12:42Speaker 6: That's the one.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Take it, Michael, Little Deuce, Coop by the Beach, preat.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Fantastic classic there classic, three cards in a islid dust
- 12:50Speaker 2: or something. I don't know.
- 12:53Speaker 7: Well, I got that money. You can buy a lot
- 12:56Speaker 7: of chocolate pie. I guess that's it.
