- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode,
- 0:30Speaker 1: a little thing we like to call the after party.
- 0:33Speaker 1: This is the show after the show, the party after
- 0:35Speaker 1: the party, the bridge to get you from one full
- 0:37Speaker 1: episode or Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig
- 0:40Speaker 1: into the dirt. On this bonus episode, we are talking
- 0:44Speaker 1: about this week's full episode subject, Alison Chains. We play
- 0:48Speaker 1: Fuck Mary Kill with your favorite grunge bands, as well
- 0:51Speaker 1: as a bit of a deeper dive into our Hollywood
- 0:53Speaker 1: Land spin off series, and we get into your voicemails,
- 0:56Speaker 1: text DMS, emails and as always, a whole lot of
- 0:59Speaker 1: row See all right, discos, let's get into it. Barry Ford,
- 1:17Speaker 1: one of our discos in the Patreon chat, made a
- 1:21Speaker 1: comment in the chat the other day about Alice in Chains.
- 1:24Speaker 1: I'm paraphrasing Barry, but he basically said he loves Alice
- 1:28Speaker 1: in Chains but doesn't consider them grunge. He considers them
- 1:32Speaker 1: heavy metal, and I agree with that. I think that Jerry, Cantrell,
- 1:35Speaker 1: Lane and the rest of Alice considered themselves a metal
- 1:39Speaker 1: band or perhaps a rock band. Barry goes on to
- 1:41Speaker 1: say that Alison Chains for the beginning of the end
- 1:43Speaker 1: for the hair metal of the eighties, and here I
- 1:46Speaker 1: think Barry is spot on once again. However, Alice in Chains,
- 1:51Speaker 1: despite their late eighties emergence, despite their metal heavosity, and
- 1:56Speaker 1: I know that's not a word, despite all that, they
- 1:59Speaker 1: are a grund. And yeah, I know it's only because
- 2:02Speaker 1: they're from Seattle during a very specific time in music history.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But them's the breaks. As they say, there are worse
- 2:09Speaker 1: places to be at worst times in history than Seattle
- 2:12Speaker 1: in the late eighties in the early nineties. So Alice
- 2:14Speaker 1: in Chains are indeed grunge, just as Sound Garden and
- 2:19Speaker 1: mud Honey and Nirvana and you know the list. I
- 2:22Speaker 1: saw all those bands, with the exception Nirvana. I could
- 2:27Speaker 1: have seen Nirvana, and I protested, it's a dumb story.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'm not gonna get into it. I saw the Melvins too,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and they were most certainly the best of the nineties
- 2:35Speaker 1: grunge bands in my opinion, or one of them top two.
- 2:39Speaker 1: I think they're fucking great. They're better than Pearl Jam.
- 2:43Speaker 1: I saw the Melvins at Babyhead and Providence, Rhode Island.
- 2:46Speaker 1: I want to say it was with Helmet, but that
- 2:48Speaker 1: seems like just too much heaviness for one bill at
- 2:51Speaker 1: a tiny club like Babyhead back in the day. But
- 2:53Speaker 1: I definitely saw both those bands at that club at
- 2:55Speaker 1: that time in the nineties. Also saw the Rollins Band
- 2:58Speaker 1: there in quick Sand. I'm getting off point. What's my yes?
- 3:01Speaker 1: Oh yes, grunge. Yes, the word grunge sucks, but ask
- 3:05Speaker 1: those who live through the jazz age and they'll probably
- 3:07Speaker 1: tell you that they hate the word swing. So be
- 3:10Speaker 1: it grunge and Alice in Chains. They are one in
- 3:13Speaker 1: the same now. I like Alison Chains. I always have,
- 3:17Speaker 1: ever since I heard their first MTV hit, Man in
- 3:20Speaker 1: the Box, which I think is the band's finest moment.
- 3:23Speaker 1: It's an incredible song, great riff, great vocal. I'm not
- 3:28Speaker 1: a massive fan of alis In Chains, though, like I
- 3:30Speaker 1: know that some of you are. I don't really listen
- 3:32Speaker 1: to Alison Chains on purpose, but if that song comes on,
- 3:35Speaker 1: I'm cranking it. That's not a bad thing. I don't
- 3:37Speaker 1: actively listen to question Mark and the Mysterians, but if
- 3:40Speaker 1: ninety six tiers comes on, you can bet your ass
- 3:42Speaker 1: and blasting that shit. I think my favorite Alison Chains
- 3:47Speaker 1: album isn't even an album at all. It's that that
- 3:50Speaker 1: acoustic EP sing e juror Flies. I love that. It's
- 3:54Speaker 1: an EP, right, yes, yeah, it's like seventy No, I
- 3:57Speaker 1: think it's less like six or seven songs. But where
- 4:01Speaker 1: does Alison Chain's rank in the eyes of the critics.
- 4:04Speaker 1: That's what I want to know. As far as so
- 4:06Speaker 1: called grunge bands are concerned. This is interesting to me
- 4:10Speaker 1: because when we think of again so called grunge bands,
- 4:14Speaker 1: there really aren't a lot of bad ones. I mean
- 4:16Speaker 1: even even to Jam. I mean, Pear Jam is a
- 4:19Speaker 1: pretty good band. Slowed out, I'm kidding. I love Pearl Jam,
- 4:25Speaker 1: don't hate bomb me. Seriously, there aren't a lot of
- 4:29Speaker 1: bad grunge bands, which means that they cannot be easily ranked.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So with about ten seconds of Internet research right here,
- 4:36Speaker 1: I see that my logic is flawed already, because when
- 4:39Speaker 1: I think grunge, I think Seattle only, but that's not
- 4:43Speaker 1: what the Internet thinks. I'm looking here, and the Internet
- 4:45Speaker 1: thinks that I guess any band with distorted guitars in
- 4:49Speaker 1: flannel in the nineteen nineties is grunge. That's okay, let's
- 4:53Speaker 1: go with that definition. And let's see how the critics
- 4:55Speaker 1: rank Alice in chains amidst their grunge contemporaries, and I
- 4:59Speaker 1: so where If they're ranked higher than Soundgarden, then the
- 5:04Speaker 1: grunge gods are gonna be very upset tonight. Okay, Pitchfork
- 5:08Speaker 1: is too lame to rank these bands by numbers, so
- 5:10Speaker 1: we're gonna ignore this list, and we're gonna ignore Pitchfork
- 5:14Speaker 1: gold My magazine, which is a pretty serious publication for
- 5:18Speaker 1: music love music collectors. I should say, Okay, this list
- 5:22Speaker 1: is legit. You know what they have at number one?
- 5:26Speaker 1: Drum roll please Green River? Now? Somehow I think this
- 5:33Speaker 1: is gonna make Johnny Vinel very happy.
- 5:35Speaker 2: All right.
- 5:35Speaker 1: I have to admit, after all these years, I don't
- 5:37Speaker 1: know this Green River album as well as I should.
- 5:41Speaker 1: If you don't, I'll tell you Green River spawd members
- 5:44Speaker 1: of Mud Honey, including Mark Arm and Jeff Ahment. I
- 5:48Speaker 1: never know how to say that, who went on to
- 5:50Speaker 1: be a Mother Lovebone and then of course to be
- 5:52Speaker 1: in Pearl Jam. So I get why they would have
- 5:55Speaker 1: Green River here at number one. They're kind of the
- 5:57Speaker 1: sonic boom of grunge. To revisit this album, though, and
- 6:01Speaker 1: when I do, I doubt very much that I'm gonna
- 6:03Speaker 1: like it more than Bad motor Finger by Soundgarden, which, well,
- 6:07Speaker 1: now you know which band I think should be in.
- 6:08Speaker 3: The number one.
- 6:09Speaker 1: But let's see who gold Mine has for number two
- 6:12Speaker 1: and the number two spot they have here you go
- 6:16Speaker 1: Alice in Chains and it's Alice in Chains Dirt. Huh.
- 6:22Speaker 1: They have Alice in Chains's Dirt as the second best
- 6:25Speaker 1: grunge album of all time. I quibble with the ranking
- 6:28Speaker 1: the number, but Barry, there you go, man, definitively grunge. Question.
- 6:35Speaker 1: What do ladies think of Alice in Chains? Are they
- 6:38Speaker 1: as stoked on Alice as they are on Soundgarden or
- 6:40Speaker 1: Nirvana or Girl Jam? I mean Pro Jam? Do women
- 6:44Speaker 1: like Pearl Jam? Do they pear Jam seems like the
- 6:47Speaker 1: ultimate dad rock band, No shade. I'm just curious, but
- 6:51Speaker 1: I mean, seriously, what's the male female split out of
- 6:54Speaker 1: twenty twenty five Pro Jam show. I'm betting it's way
- 6:58Speaker 1: more dudes, And I'm betting that women like Alice in
- 7:01Speaker 1: Chains more than they like Pearl Jam. I could be wrong.
- 7:04Speaker 1: My wife hates Pearl Jam. I don't I like Pearl
- 7:08Speaker 1: Jam despite the shit I'm giving them. I like him
- 7:10Speaker 1: a lot. Actually, she hates pearl Jam, but she thinks
- 7:13Speaker 1: Eddie Vedder is hot. So how does that figure into
- 7:16Speaker 1: this equation? I don't know. Fuck Mary kill Pearl Jam,
- 7:19Speaker 1: Alison chains Green River. Fuck Alison Chains kill Green River?
- 7:24Speaker 1: Mary Pearl Jam. Right, that's the only answer, isn't it.
- 7:28Speaker 1: You're not gonna marry Green River. Fuck's sake? See what
- 7:31Speaker 1: I did there. I guess you could kill Alice in Chains,
- 7:34Speaker 1: but that seems successive given that Lane is already dead
- 7:37Speaker 1: and giving the Green River is named after a serial killer,
- 7:39Speaker 1: You're definitely killing Green River and Mary in Pearl Jam.
- 7:42Speaker 1: You know Eddie Vedder? Isn't it for the long haul? All? Right?
- 7:44Speaker 1: To recap Green River in their album Rehab Doll at
- 7:48Speaker 1: number one, alis In Chains Dirt at number two, number three,
- 7:54Speaker 1: Nirvana Bleach, Damn. I gotta say this list is some
- 7:58Speaker 1: jack black, high fidelity, obnoxious record clerk type shit. Is
- 8:03Speaker 1: Bleach better than never Mind? That's a really good question.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Is is it even better than an Utero? I don't know.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Maybe I think so. I haven't thought about it enough
- 8:12Speaker 1: I need to. It's fucking awesome. I gotta say. When
- 8:15Speaker 1: I think of the word grunge, I do think of
- 8:16Speaker 1: this record. I think of Bleach. I can get with this.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Perhaps Nirvana Bleach should be even higher. And that's because
- 8:23Speaker 1: you want to fuck Mary and kill Kirk Copain.
- 8:25Speaker 4: Okay, Number four, what do the big brained, big eared,
- 8:30Speaker 4: big record collection writers at gold Mine think for number now?
- 8:35Speaker 1: Come on, man, this is fucked up pauw dragline. This
- 8:40Speaker 1: is just wrong, wrong, wrong answer. I know this record
- 8:46Speaker 1: and this is way too high. Number four, this is
- 8:48Speaker 1: just obnoxious record store clerk trolling right now. This is
- 8:52Speaker 1: a fifteen year old you walking into Strawberries to buid
- 8:55Speaker 1: never Mind in the stoned record clerk is like, oh man,
- 8:58Speaker 1: don't buy that fucking corporate Nirvana record. Man by this
- 9:02Speaker 1: Paw record instead. This is the real shit. I don't know.
- 9:06Speaker 1: There's nothing about Paw that is better than never Mind.
- 9:09Speaker 1: I wouldn't fuck marry or kill anyone in Pod and
- 9:11Speaker 1: neither would you. Number five Soundgarden. Here we go, all right,
- 9:14Speaker 1: Soundgarden finally, but they have the wrong album. They have
- 9:17Speaker 1: super Unknown, but The correct album for this high on
- 9:20Speaker 1: the list is Bad motor Finger and I Will die
- 9:22Speaker 1: at my Jesus Christ pose on that hill. Super Unknown
- 9:25Speaker 1: is the shit. However, number six, I swear guys, I
- 9:28Speaker 1: did not check this list until right now I'm reading
- 9:31Speaker 1: it in real time. Number six is Alice in Chain's Facelift. Okay, Barry,
- 9:36Speaker 1: your favorite metal band has more grunge albums on the
- 9:39Speaker 1: top ten grunge album list than any other grunge band.
- 9:43Speaker 1: What's that say about Alis in Chains being grunge? Number
- 9:46Speaker 1: seven Nirvana never mind, way too low, way way way
- 9:50Speaker 1: way too low. We wouldn't even be having this conversation
- 9:53Speaker 1: right now without this album. Number eight still waiting on
- 9:57Speaker 1: Bad Motorfinger, by the way, where the fuck is any
- 9:59Speaker 1: veteran stone? And from the rest of the gang? Number
- 10:01Speaker 1: eight is Dinosaur Junior Bug What in the actual fuck?
- 10:06Speaker 1: This is some riachy, pretentious record store clerk bullshit. If
- 10:12Speaker 1: you're including Dinosaur, who else are you including on this list?
- 10:15Speaker 1: As grunge, The Pixies, the Lemonheads, Buffalo Tom Come on, man,
- 10:21Speaker 1: I love all those bands, and I love Dinosaur Junior,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and I love this album. But I don't know, I
- 10:26Speaker 1: feel like. Not only was this record too far removed geographically,
- 10:30Speaker 1: it was also too underground at the time of its release.
- 10:34Speaker 1: So I don't know. People just weren't thinking of Dinosaur
- 10:38Speaker 1: Junior as a grunge band. People who knew anyways, people
- 10:41Speaker 1: who put up with people at gold mines bullshit were
- 10:45Speaker 1: not considering Dinosaur Junior grudge. They were considering Dinosaur Junior
- 10:50Speaker 1: influential even on Kirk Cobain. Kirk Cobain, don't tell me
- 10:56Speaker 1: how to pronounce Kirk Cobain's name. They were certainly og.
- 11:01Speaker 1: There were, certainly, but there were Massachusetts in like western masts.
- 11:04Speaker 1: They weren't even. I don't know, man, this is a reach,
- 11:07Speaker 1: to say nothing of the fact that Dinosaurgenior Bug is
- 11:10Speaker 1: not better than Bad motor Finger by Sound Grad number nine,
- 11:15Speaker 1: right on Time number nine with Pearl Jams number ten.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Here's the thing. I can't listen to this record anymore. Ever,
- 11:24Speaker 1: it was too big and I didn't like it enough
- 11:27Speaker 1: to begin with. I loved when they did MTV Unplugged,
- 11:30Speaker 1: which I think was in support of this album, and
- 11:32Speaker 1: I loved them live. I saw them at the beginning
- 11:35Speaker 1: of this ride, the beginning of their ride. I should
- 11:37Speaker 1: say when nobody knew them, saw them in a roller rink
- 11:40Speaker 1: going on before Smashing Pumpkins, who were going on before
- 11:43Speaker 1: Red Hot Chili Peppers, and I saw Pearl Jam at
- 11:45Speaker 1: the end of this ride when they were playing Big
- 11:48Speaker 1: Sheds on Lallapalooza. And Pearl Jam were always better as
- 11:51Speaker 1: a live band than this record. They were even better
- 11:53Speaker 1: than as an idea than they were of this record.
- 11:56Speaker 1: But I get it. Dudes love them some. Pearl Jam
- 11:59Speaker 1: number two, ten, Nirvana in Utero. These dudes think that
- 12:05Speaker 1: ten by Pearl Jam is better than in Utero. That's
- 12:09Speaker 1: crazy talk. That's like thinking Chet Baker is a better
- 12:12Speaker 1: trumpet player than Miles Davis. That's that's gross. I should
- 12:14Speaker 1: have said that I was trying to be on that
- 12:16Speaker 1: Elitis Record store clerk thing, that Elitas Record store clerk tip.
- 12:20Speaker 1: But I don't know. Man, God, this list annoys me. Okay,
- 12:26Speaker 1: I guarantee you though my list is gonna annoy you
- 12:28Speaker 1: more than this list annoys me. So to recap, the
- 12:31Speaker 1: top ten grunge albums from Goldmeme Magazine are in reverse order.
- 12:38Speaker 1: Number ten, Nirvana in Utero, number nine, Pearl Jam ten,
- 12:43Speaker 1: number eight, Dinosaur Junior Bug, number seven, Nirvana, never Mind six,
- 12:52Speaker 1: Alison Chains, Facelift, five, Soundgardens, super Unknown, four Paw drag Line,
- 12:58Speaker 1: Get the fuck out of here? What's the matter you
- 12:59Speaker 1: never heard? Tad number three, Nirvana Bleach, number two, Alison
- 13:04Speaker 1: Chains Dirt and number one Green River with Rehab Doll. Okay.
- 13:12Speaker 1: For our purposes here, it's worth pointing out that Alison
- 13:14Speaker 1: Chains have two albums in the top ten of the
- 13:17Speaker 1: greatest grunge albums of all time, along with Nirvana. Now,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I think that is saying something. I think it says
- 13:25Speaker 1: Barry that Alison Chains are definitively grunge. But are there
- 13:31Speaker 1: two Alison Chains albums on your top ten list of
- 13:35Speaker 1: grunge albums? That's the question, is Alison Chain's definitively grunge?
- 13:42Speaker 1: Are they emblematic of the grunge sound, the grunge era,
- 13:47Speaker 1: the grunge movement more than any other grunge band. I
- 13:52Speaker 1: think what Goldmine is telling us is that perhaps they are.
- 13:56Speaker 1: And I'm sure if I looked at Rolling Stone's list,
- 13:58Speaker 1: and I'm sure if Pitchfork Hadney Balls and they put
- 14:00Speaker 1: some some rankings on their on their list, we'd find
- 14:04Speaker 1: the same thing, But I don't know are they Are
- 14:07Speaker 1: there two Alison chains records on your top ten list
- 14:10Speaker 1: of grunge albums? I want to know, are there two
- 14:14Speaker 1: Alison Chain's albums on my top ten grunge albums list? So,
- 14:20Speaker 1: after not thinking about this too much, I jotted a
- 14:23Speaker 1: bunch down here and then I and then I ranked
- 14:25Speaker 1: them and I'm telling you right now you're all gonna
- 14:28Speaker 1: hate this list, but I swear to you this is
- 14:31Speaker 1: this is the truth, this is authentic. This is not
- 14:33Speaker 1: me trolling you. This is not me trying to piss
- 14:36Speaker 1: you off, trying to get a reaction. This is not
- 14:38Speaker 1: me putting that Mother Lovebone album at number one, which
- 14:43Speaker 1: I'm I'm sure some of you would have. Not me.
- 14:47Speaker 1: I kind of went here. My method was, Okay, if
- 14:50Speaker 1: I have all these records in front of me and
- 14:54Speaker 1: the clock's ticking and I gotta make my exit, I
- 14:57Speaker 1: gotta go grab my go bag, and I got room
- 14:59Speaker 1: for one record it as I take off to my
- 15:03Speaker 1: desert island. In what order am I choosing that record? Okay?
- 15:08Speaker 1: So here we go. Number ten. You're gonna hate this
- 15:12Speaker 1: so much. Number ten the Singles soundtrack. Okay, yes, Cameron
- 15:18Speaker 1: Crowz Film Singles. I know, I know real grunge heads
- 15:23Speaker 1: hate this album, but I don't care. If you were
- 15:25Speaker 1: in high school in nineteen ninety whatever when this came
- 15:28Speaker 1: out ninety one, I think it came out, you could
- 15:31Speaker 1: not love this. Come on, you had to be a
- 15:33Speaker 1: hardened punk rock just anti establishment, and I was all
- 15:39Speaker 1: those things. But I wasn't that hard just total nerd
- 15:42Speaker 1: to not like this movie when it came out. You
- 15:45Speaker 1: might have problems with it now as cinema or whatever,
- 15:49Speaker 1: but this movie's fantastic. In the soundtrack is great, and
- 15:53Speaker 1: I know Paul Westerberg isn't grunge, and he's all over
- 15:55Speaker 1: this soundtrack. And I know, I know there's other songs
- 15:58Speaker 1: on this soundtrack that are not grudge, but this soundtrack
- 16:01Speaker 1: is so fucking good. The movie's so good. Pearl Jam's
- 16:05Speaker 1: in the movie, for God's sake, they're in Matt Dillon's band.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Movies is damn good, and it just it just gives
- 16:11Speaker 1: me all the feels for this time in history in
- 16:13Speaker 1: music history that I was part of. Actually we were
- 16:15Speaker 1: all part of, I guess in some way, you know,
- 16:18Speaker 1: on the consumer side, at least so as lame as
- 16:21Speaker 1: this pick is I'm honest. Okay, I'm telling you I'm
- 16:24Speaker 1: coming at you. I'm coming at you with my heart
- 16:27Speaker 1: on my sleeve. Single soundtrack, number ten, number nine, Alison
- 16:32Speaker 1: Chain's Jar of Flies. I mentioned it earlier, number eight.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I gave him a lot of shit. But Pearl Jam Versus.
- 16:40Speaker 1: When I was in college and I was at Northeastern,
- 16:42Speaker 1: when this record came out, you could just walk through
- 16:45Speaker 1: campus and this would just be blasting from like uncountable
- 16:51Speaker 1: numbers of dorm windows on the quad, in boomboxes. You'd
- 16:55Speaker 1: go into the cafeteria, it would be it was everywhere everywhere.
- 17:00Speaker 1: Everyone bought this record the week it came out, too Tuesday,
- 17:03Speaker 1: Toyer Records, New Brewstree, Boom, everyone had it. I don't
- 17:06Speaker 1: even know that I bought it, but I loved it.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Pro Jam Versus at number eight, number seven, Smashing Pumpkins,
- 17:11Speaker 1: Simme's Dream, criminally ignored by Goldmine. I got this record
- 17:16Speaker 1: at number seven, Billy Corgan, you know I'm listening. I'm
- 17:19Speaker 1: here for you. I'm still listening to this record. Number six,
- 17:22Speaker 1: Nirvana in Utero, great album. I don't listen to it
- 17:25Speaker 1: enough because you know, it's just a weird time. It's
- 17:28Speaker 1: a weird time for all of us who grew up
- 17:30Speaker 1: with Kurt Cobaine. Number five Soundgarden super Unknown, that's right.
- 17:35Speaker 1: I think it's better than in Utero. Number four Melvin's
- 17:37Speaker 1: stoner Witch. This record is incredible. I didn't put this
- 17:41Speaker 1: here just to be cool, guy. I listened to the
- 17:43Speaker 1: shit out of this record, and it's amazing. And I
- 17:45Speaker 1: will put Buzzo's solo album up here as well, high
- 17:48Speaker 1: but not cracking the top ten. Melvin stoner Witch, amazing,
- 17:51Speaker 1: amazing album. If you don't know it, go get it.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Number three Nirvana never Mind. It was real tough to
- 17:58Speaker 1: put this one behind number two Nirvana Bleach. But Nirvana Bleach,
- 18:03Speaker 1: you just don't get never Mind without Bleach, which is
- 18:05Speaker 1: why it's number two in my book and number one
- 18:08Speaker 1: Soundgarden Bad motor Finger is simply because this record is
- 18:11Speaker 1: a masterpiece, and I listened to it. I just listened
- 18:15Speaker 1: to it more. I listened to it more than I
- 18:16Speaker 1: listened to all these records. I have listened to this
- 18:18Speaker 1: record more historically then I've listened to all these records.
- 18:22Speaker 1: I guess, if you ask me, you know who's the
- 18:25Speaker 1: most emblematic singer, songwriter, musician of the grunge era. I
- 18:29Speaker 1: don't know that I would say Chris Cornell. I think
- 18:31Speaker 1: I would probably say Kurt Cobain. But I just listen
- 18:34Speaker 1: to Bad motor Finger more. I just think it's better.
- 18:38Speaker 1: It's subjective, that's it. That's the reason I can't. You know,
- 18:41Speaker 1: I can hear you if you're sitting here going super
- 18:43Speaker 1: Unknown is better. But to me, it's Bad motor Finger. Okay,
- 18:46Speaker 1: So to recap to recap number one, Soundgarden, Bad motorf
- 18:51Speaker 1: Finger number two, Nirvana Bleach number three, Nirvana never Mind
- 18:53Speaker 1: number four, Melvin stone Rich number five, Soundgarden super Unknown
- 18:56Speaker 1: number six, Nirvana in Utero number seven, Smashing Pumpkins, Sign's
- 19:00Speaker 1: Dream number eight, Pearl Jam Versus number nine, Alison Chains,
- 19:03Speaker 1: Jar of Flies number ten, the Singles soundtrack Send Me
- 19:06Speaker 1: all the hate mail you got. I deserve it. This
- 19:08Speaker 1: is kind of a bullshit list. I get it. Three
- 19:10Speaker 1: Nirvana records, two Soundgarden records, all in the top six. Yea,
- 19:15Speaker 1: yea whatever. It might be lame, but it is authentic, Okay.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Like I said, if all those records are lying in
- 19:20Speaker 1: front of me, that's the order I'd pack them. For
- 19:22Speaker 1: my trip to the Desert Island. Anyway, thank you Alison
- 19:25Speaker 1: Chains for sending us down this rabbit hole. Alison Chains.
- 19:28Speaker 1: This Allison Chains episode is of course available for you
- 19:31Speaker 1: to listen to right now at the top of your disgrace. Actually,
- 19:34Speaker 1: just before this episode that you're listening to right now
- 19:36Speaker 1: and coming up right after this episode is our rewind
- 19:39Speaker 1: episode on Snoop dogg Man. We are living in the
- 19:43Speaker 1: nineties this week and next week. Next week we have
- 19:47Speaker 1: our part two of our Bob Dylan episode. And guys,
- 19:55Speaker 1: I don't even know where to begin. I have been
- 19:58Speaker 1: in a rabbit on this subject, on this Bob Dylan
- 20:03Speaker 1: story that I'm putting together. This episode is going to
- 20:09Speaker 1: blow your brains out in that jfk assassination kind of
- 20:13Speaker 1: blow your brains out kind of way I found. So
- 20:15Speaker 1: here's the deal. I found this book by two scholars,
- 20:18Speaker 1: Chad Israelsen, I think I'm saying that correctly and Jeff
- 20:21Speaker 1: Taylor called the Political World of Bob Dylan, and it
- 20:25Speaker 1: has completely fucked me up. And I thought I knew
- 20:29Speaker 1: what this episode was going to be. It's one of
- 20:31Speaker 1: those episodes where you get into the research thinking one
- 20:33Speaker 1: thing and you get out of the research and you're like,
- 20:35Speaker 1: oh my god, what have I fucking learned? And on
- 20:38Speaker 1: top of that, during the researching and writing of this episode,
- 20:42Speaker 1: as you as most of you know, we haven't really
- 20:44Speaker 1: talked about it here in much depth. But the JFK
- 20:46Speaker 1: files were released last week, last Tuesday, and I've been
- 20:53Speaker 1: digging around, as have a lot of people that I
- 20:57Speaker 1: am doing a lot more digging. People are like writing
- 20:59Speaker 1: AI score to figure this out. And there's some really
- 21:02Speaker 1: smart journalists, former Washington Post folks who are digging into
- 21:05Speaker 1: this and very very intentional and thoughtful ways, and they're
- 21:09Speaker 1: lining it up with a bunch of research that has
- 21:12Speaker 1: already been done, a bunch of public documents that have
- 21:15Speaker 1: already been released, and they're able to cross check things
- 21:18Speaker 1: and confirm them. And some of the so called previous
- 21:22Speaker 1: conspiracy theories about what the CIA was up to, what
- 21:26Speaker 1: Richard Nixon was up to, it's I mean, it's it's
- 21:31Speaker 1: put it this way, what we thought happened did not happened,
- 21:34Speaker 1: unless what we thought happened was that the CIA had
- 21:37Speaker 1: something to do with the JFK assassination, because they most
- 21:40Speaker 1: certainly do. But there are far reaching consequences from these
- 21:44Speaker 1: files that go beyond the JFK assassination and go into
- 21:48Speaker 1: the CIA's work in the nineteen seventies. And that's where
- 21:52Speaker 1: things get interesting for mister Bob Dylan. Okay, this is
- 21:56Speaker 1: shaping up to be something totally unexpected. I'm still not
- 22:00Speaker 1: with this episode. It's gonna be a miracle if we
- 22:02Speaker 1: get it done and released on time next week. But
- 22:04Speaker 1: we will, and when we do, it's gonna like, like
- 22:09Speaker 1: I sort of said earlier, like actually what Peter Wolf
- 22:11Speaker 1: from the Jay Giles Band said, it's gonna blow your
- 22:13Speaker 1: face out. Man. Okay, I have a Peter Wolf story
- 22:15Speaker 1: by the way, maybe I'll tell it in the bonus section.
- 22:17Speaker 1: It's about Bob Dylan. Maybe I'll tell it in the
- 22:19Speaker 1: bonus section of this here, this yere episode. Anyways, back
- 22:24Speaker 1: to Bob Dylan. When you're listening to the Dylan episode,
- 22:26Speaker 1: be thinking about the whole voice of a Generation thing. Okay,
- 22:29Speaker 1: they hung that label on Bob Dylan, It's part of
- 22:32Speaker 1: why we get into it in this upcoming episode. They
- 22:33Speaker 1: hung that label on Lane Staley's contemporary, Kirk Cobeyan as well.
- 22:38Speaker 1: But next next week's Question of the Week is going
- 22:40Speaker 1: to be what songwriter most speaks for your generation. Okay,
- 22:45Speaker 1: every songwriter hates that moniker, but still it doesn't erase
- 22:49Speaker 1: the fact that there are certain songwriters, there are certain
- 22:53Speaker 1: musicians who carry that mantle, whether they want to or not.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Kirk Cobey definitely carry that mantle in my in my opinion,
- 23:01Speaker 1: back in the nineteen nineties, he was absolutely the voice
- 23:04Speaker 1: of that generation. He most certainly did not want to be,
- 23:07Speaker 1: yet he was. His influence was you could not even
- 23:12Speaker 1: calculate it if you tried, And I think you could
- 23:15Speaker 1: say something similar about Bob Dylan. But there are certainly
- 23:17Speaker 1: the others from that that sixties generation who who could
- 23:21Speaker 1: wear that mantle. But I want to know from your perspective,
- 23:24Speaker 1: from your generation, no matter what era you were born in,
- 23:28Speaker 1: no matter what era you came up in, no matter
- 23:30Speaker 1: what era your formative years took took place in, whether
- 23:33Speaker 1: they were back in the past sometime and the aughts,
- 23:35Speaker 1: perhaps in the nineties and the eighties and the seventies,
- 23:37Speaker 1: perhaps perhaps your gen Z. I don't know. But who
- 23:40Speaker 1: is is it Kendrick? Who is that songwriter? Is it
- 23:44Speaker 1: Taylor Swift? Is it Jack White? That most speaks for
- 23:49Speaker 1: your generation. That's what I want to be thinking about
- 23:51Speaker 1: when you're listening to that Bob Dylan episode. Okay, and
- 23:54Speaker 1: then I want you to call me six one seven
- 23:55Speaker 1: nine oh sixty six sixty three eight, leave me a
- 23:57Speaker 1: voicemail with your answer, or send me a text with
- 23:59Speaker 1: your answer at that number, or hit me up at
- 24:02Speaker 1: Disgrace Lampod on the socials. I'm gonna take a quick break,
- 24:04Speaker 1: drink some of my tea, and I will be back
- 24:06Speaker 1: in a flash. All right, we are back in. Just
- 24:28Speaker 1: a quick reminder to make sure that all you Apple
- 24:30Speaker 1: Podcasts listeners have auto downloads turned on so you're not
- 24:33Speaker 1: missing any episodes. I'm sure most of you do. I
- 24:37Speaker 1: just woke up this morning found out that we are
- 24:39Speaker 1: number one on Apple Podcasts Music Charts, Top of the Charts, baby,
- 24:43Speaker 1: So thanks to all the Apple podcast listeners out there,
- 24:45Speaker 1: we appreciate you. Uh okay six one seven nine oh
- 24:49Speaker 1: six sixty six three eight to leave a voicemailer, send
- 24:51Speaker 1: me a text, or DM me at Disgrace lam Pod.
- 24:54Speaker 1: This week's Question of the Week was in light of
- 24:58Speaker 1: our Lane Daily episode, which Seattle artist most speaks to you?
- 25:03Speaker 1: Which which musician which singer songwriter Who's your fave basically?
- 25:06Speaker 1: And why is it? Lane? Is it? Kurt? Is it Chris?
- 25:09Speaker 1: Is it Eddie? Who would be? Let me know? All right?
- 25:12Speaker 1: Calling in from the two seven to zero wherever that is.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Let's check out this voicemail here.
- 25:19Speaker 2: Hey Jake, this is the Seattle question.
- 25:22Speaker 3: And I'm going to go with probably a curveball here,
- 25:26Speaker 3: but I'm gonna go with my man, Mark Lanagan, my
- 25:29Speaker 3: favorite artist of all time, pretty much leads enter of
- 25:33Speaker 3: the Screaming Trees, who are a great band, underrated band,
- 25:37Speaker 3: but his solo output him with Isabelle Campbell, Greg Dooley.
- 25:45Speaker 2: And then this his complete solo records. He also did
- 25:48Speaker 2: amazing work with Queens of the Stone Age, complete badass.
- 25:53Speaker 2: He also slapped the Gallagher guy around from all Oasis anyway,
- 25:58Speaker 2: Mark Lanagan even close. Sorry Eddie, Sorry Kurt, Thanks Man.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Love the show, Mark Lanigan. We haven't mentioned Mark Lanigan yet,
- 26:09Speaker 1: and I don't think we've mentioned Screaming Trees yet. And
- 26:12Speaker 1: I love this answer. I played it because we are
- 26:15Speaker 1: woefully overdue on a Mark Lannigan episode. And I gotta say, man,
- 26:20Speaker 1: I yeah, I am. I love just one of these
- 26:25Speaker 1: things like you just don't have enough time in your life.
- 26:27Speaker 1: And I don't mean like right now, at this moment
- 26:29Speaker 1: in time, I mean like forever. Every time I've heard
- 26:33Speaker 1: any I've seen screaming trees before, and every time I've
- 26:35Speaker 1: heard anything Mark Lannigan, I'm into it. I like it
- 26:40Speaker 1: a lot. Yet I've never had that moment for me
- 26:42Speaker 1: where I've gone down and just become a fan and
- 26:45Speaker 1: bought his stuff, actively seeked it out and got into it.
- 26:49Speaker 1: I know he has an incredible book. I know the
- 26:51Speaker 1: stories are supposed to be completely wild. I didn't know.
- 26:54Speaker 1: I didn't. I guess there's in some part of my
- 26:57Speaker 1: memory hole. There's something about him slash around someone from Oasis.
- 27:02Speaker 1: I'm assuming it's Liam. But I don't know this story,
- 27:04Speaker 1: and I feel like I should, and I feel like
- 27:06Speaker 1: I feel like I got to do an episode of
- 27:07Speaker 1: Mark Lannigan and I got to make that happen soon.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Maybe we'll do a Mark Lanigan and it gets episode two,
- 27:13Speaker 1: separate episodes before the year's over. Maybe I'll get into that.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Thanks for your call to seven. Oh appreciate you.
- 27:19Speaker 2: Hi, Jake.
- 27:20Speaker 5: It's Kelly from the seventy eight one Again. I'm sorry
- 27:22Speaker 5: I had to call back because I meant to also
- 27:23Speaker 5: say I fucking love Pearl Jam too, always have and
- 27:28Speaker 5: I always will. Eddie veddaw Was He's still on my
- 27:30Speaker 5: locker in high school. I fucking love him. I love
- 27:34Speaker 5: Pearl Jam. I saw him that Boston Goud and vite
- 27:36Speaker 5: before they tore it down, you know, the one where
- 27:38Speaker 5: he made the hole and jump through it.
- 27:41Speaker 6: I love him.
- 27:42Speaker 3: I love Edievetta.
- 27:44Speaker 5: I don't care who knows it.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I don't give a shit.
- 27:46Speaker 6: I love them.
- 27:48Speaker 5: I just had to call back and say that.
- 27:50Speaker 1: Thank you, all right, Kelly, thank you for the voicemail.
- 27:54Speaker 1: I played that obviously because I was asking earlier are
- 27:56Speaker 1: women into Pearl Jam? And clearly Kelly from Massachusetts is
- 28:01Speaker 1: into Pearl Jam. Kelly, I love the accent as well.
- 28:03Speaker 1: Thanks for the call. All right, let's check out this
- 28:06Speaker 1: message from the two oh six.
- 28:08Speaker 6: Thak what's happening?
- 28:09Speaker 3: Brother? Now?
- 28:10Speaker 6: You know I was not gonna miss this week's question.
- 28:12Speaker 6: Of course, two six is in my name, so my
- 28:16Speaker 6: all time favorite grunge band. You know, I grew up
- 28:19Speaker 6: in I remember growing up in that era when grunge
- 28:23Speaker 6: was just huge. Actually fun fact, our main urban station
- 28:29Speaker 6: up here when Kurt Cobain passed away, they changed their
- 28:33Speaker 6: format and they blended in grunge and alternative with hip
- 28:38Speaker 6: hop and R and B. So you would hear a
- 28:40Speaker 6: Doctor Dre song, you hear a spin Doctor song, then
- 28:44Speaker 6: you hear a TLC record, follow up by a Pearl
- 28:46Speaker 6: Jam record. It was basically became a melting pot. As
- 28:50Speaker 6: far as favorite band, I mean, I guess Nirvana, But
- 28:55Speaker 6: I will say this, I always thought this was kind
- 28:57Speaker 6: of interesting, and give me your take on this. I
- 29:00Speaker 6: always felt that Soundgarden was like the led Zeppelin of
- 29:04Speaker 6: the grunge era. Black Hole Sun sounds like a song
- 29:07Speaker 6: Zeppelin would have made great song. By the way, I
- 29:10Speaker 6: always felt Alison Chains was the more metal band, like
- 29:14Speaker 6: they could be up there with Metallica, and I guess
- 29:17Speaker 6: Nirvana was more of like the pop They were more
- 29:19Speaker 6: the Beatles of the grunge era. Let me know what
- 29:22Speaker 6: you think on that. All right, rock and roller much.
- 29:25Speaker 1: Love, brother, That is some crazy I've never heard of that.
- 29:29Speaker 1: A ritization changing their format to celebrate an artist from
- 29:33Speaker 1: a different genre. Just speaks to the influence of Kurt
- 29:38Speaker 1: Cobaine upon his passing. Yeah, I get your comparison. I
- 29:43Speaker 1: get the sound Garden Zeppelin comparison, though I don't think Soundgarden,
- 29:46Speaker 1: I know Soundgarden was never as big commercially as led
- 29:52Speaker 1: Zeppelin was. Maybe they were, like maybe you can. You
- 29:55Speaker 1: can look at the numbers and you can line them up,
- 29:57Speaker 1: you can look at the hits and number one records
- 29:59Speaker 1: and charts and all that. But just anecdotally, time and place,
- 30:04Speaker 1: there was no one bigger than led Zeppelin. When led
- 30:06Speaker 1: Zeppelin was around, they were that big. They were head
- 30:09Speaker 1: and shoulders above everybody else, and Soundgarden really wasn't. But stylistically,
- 30:14Speaker 1: I hear what you're saying, Nirvana being more pop yep,
- 30:17Speaker 1: I get it, I get it. And what else did
- 30:21Speaker 1: you say, Alison Chains being more metal? Yeah, yeah for sure.
- 30:25Speaker 1: But alis in Chains also had like a real kind
- 30:28Speaker 1: of hard rock kind of groove thing to them. But yeah, overall,
- 30:32Speaker 1: I agree with you. Good, good call. I appreciate it. Thanks.
- 30:35Speaker 1: It's good to have your perspective from way up there
- 30:36Speaker 1: in the Northwest. All right, seven two four?
- 30:39Speaker 2: Right?
- 30:39Speaker 3: Sam?
- 30:40Speaker 1: You asked about what band hits the hardest from Seattle
- 30:43Speaker 1: from the grunge era, and although it's boring for me,
- 30:45Speaker 1: it is Alice in Chains, seven to four goes on
- 30:49Speaker 1: to say, I prefer the Lane stuff, but I don't
- 30:51Speaker 1: mind it vibe with the Duval stuff too. I don't
- 30:54Speaker 1: mind you saying it, but they pulled me out of
- 30:55Speaker 1: a really dark space, especially the song I Stay. You
- 31:01Speaker 1: also asked last week what grunge band we listened to
- 31:03Speaker 1: most today, and yeah, it's Alison Chains, but I really
- 31:06Speaker 1: enjoy Mother Love Bone too, and catch myself listening to
- 31:08Speaker 1: them to this day too. That and the supergroup Mad
- 31:11Speaker 1: season seven two four appreciate you, Yeah, man, Alison Chains,
- 31:17Speaker 1: people love them. This episode we just released has received
- 31:22Speaker 1: an incredible amount of praise, an incredible amount of listens.
- 31:27Speaker 1: Like I said, number one on the music podcast chart
- 31:29Speaker 1: this week on Apple. And I think it's because of
- 31:31Speaker 1: people like you seven two four who just have this
- 31:33Speaker 1: incredible affinity for Alison Chains and for Lane Stay in particular.
- 31:37Speaker 1: Four one six rights in subjects Seattle group Jason from
- 31:40Speaker 1: the four one six, Hey, great topic. I find it
- 31:42Speaker 1: hard to listen to my formerly favorite Seattle grunge bands
- 31:45Speaker 1: because of the lead singers untimely and very sad demises,
- 31:49Speaker 1: except of course Eddy Vedder. It did strike me the
- 31:52Speaker 1: grunge was the first mainstream musical movement, although Blues was
- 31:55Speaker 1: there first that puts songs about mental health struggles on
- 31:59Speaker 1: the mainstream chart down in a hole Lithium, black hole Sun,
- 32:03Speaker 1: among others. It was honest, raw and a cry for help.
- 32:09Speaker 1: I was totally there with you, but then your last
- 32:11Speaker 1: sentence reminded me of Hell. I need you know, the
- 32:13Speaker 1: Beatles not as directly mental health related. So you're right.
- 32:19Speaker 1: I'm trying to think what else came before that had
- 32:24Speaker 1: the same commercial impact. I think you're right. I think
- 32:27Speaker 1: nothing's coming to mind. I think grunge nailed it first
- 32:29Speaker 1: in the biggest way, I should say, very interesting way
- 32:33Speaker 1: to look at it. And you had too many dead
- 32:35Speaker 1: grunge singers, too many dead ones. It's ridiculous. I guess
- 32:40Speaker 1: they told us though, to your point. All right, I'm
- 32:43Speaker 1: going back here a little bit because we had the
- 32:45Speaker 1: George Michael episode last week and I just want to
- 32:49Speaker 1: go to this text here from the five to three
- 32:51Speaker 1: zero right. Hey, For us gen xers, MTV was like daycare.
- 32:56Speaker 1: That's so true. I'll never forget when my folks got
- 33:00Speaker 1: turning on the Telly and the first thing on remote
- 33:03Speaker 1: control with Ken Ober Epic Show damn, I forgot about that.
- 33:07Speaker 1: I forgot about remote control. But favorite MTV artist Nirvana,
- 33:11Speaker 1: it seems that air it smells like teen Spirit every hour.
- 33:15Speaker 1: They definitely did. I'm not sure the group would have
- 33:17Speaker 1: gotten so big without MTV. They definitely wouldn't. And the
- 33:20Speaker 1: news of Cobain's death reported by Kurt Loder, is forever
- 33:22Speaker 1: etched in my mind. It's mine as well as the
- 33:25Speaker 1: saddest day certainly was the most devastating rockstar passing of
- 33:29Speaker 1: our generation. I would agree with that. Appreciate the show
- 33:31Speaker 1: as always, keep on rocking from Z in the five
- 33:34Speaker 1: to three oh Z. Thank you, appreciate you six one
- 33:37Speaker 1: seven nine oh six six six three eight. You guys
- 33:38Speaker 1: want to leave me a voicemail, send me a text
- 33:40Speaker 1: next week's question of the week? Which artist speaks best
- 33:45Speaker 1: for your generation? Who is the voice of your generation?
- 33:50Speaker 1: And why? I want to know? Musically speaking, I know
- 33:52Speaker 1: that's broad. I know you don't really wake up in
- 33:55Speaker 1: the morning going hmm, what is Kendrick Lamar going to
- 33:58Speaker 1: say about my generation today? I get it, I get it.
- 34:03Speaker 1: This is more a sociological, historical question than it is
- 34:06Speaker 1: a subjective question. That's what I'm looking for Again six
- 34:09Speaker 1: p one seven nine oh six sixty six three eight
- 34:11Speaker 1: you want to send me a voicemail, lead me to
- 34:12Speaker 1: tsk you and also hit me up at Disgrace Slam
- 34:15Speaker 1: pod on Instagram, on X on Facebook. W Robbins writes
- 34:19Speaker 1: in on Instagram, Alice and Lane in particular are a
- 34:22Speaker 1: huge inspiration for me as an artist, musician and a singer.
- 34:25Speaker 1: I remember the day we learned of his passing and
- 34:27Speaker 1: the chilling fact that it was on the anniversary of
- 34:30Speaker 1: Kurt's own death. I struggled not to cry listening to
- 34:33Speaker 1: the last few minutes of today's episode. Bless you and
- 34:35Speaker 1: your unique storytelling. I deeply appreciate it and you you
- 34:39Speaker 1: never disappoints her as always rock a rolla. W. Robbins,
- 34:42Speaker 1: thank you so much. Appreciate you, my man, Thanks for listening,
- 34:45Speaker 1: Thanks for writing in. Kevin Mason writes in on X,
- 34:48Speaker 1: Hey have you heard of the band plus Cibo. They've
- 34:50Speaker 1: been around, I believe since nineteen ninety six. They've had
- 34:52Speaker 1: mild success here with songs such as Pure Morning and
- 34:55Speaker 1: Every You, Every Meet, but they have consistently been releasing
- 34:59Speaker 1: album and touring. And you know, I said, I hadn't,
- 35:02Speaker 1: but I have. Actually they're from England. Heard of them,
- 35:07Speaker 1: never heard them? Placebo? You guys placebo fans like Kevin
- 35:10Speaker 1: Mason is hit me up. Let me know where do
- 35:12Speaker 1: I start? Which record? Teresa Burton writes in on Facebook,
- 35:15Speaker 1: Hey Jake, I would love a Duran Duran episode. So guys,
- 35:19Speaker 1: we were talking about Duran Duran last week and last
- 35:21Speaker 1: week's after party on the Heels of our George Michael
- 35:24Speaker 1: full episode. Teresa goes on to say, I was at
- 35:26Speaker 1: Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto the night the Reflex was filmed.
- 35:29Speaker 1: The Reflex video, I'm assuming if you do go down
- 35:32Speaker 1: the Duran Duran path, I would suggest in The Pleasure
- 35:35Speaker 1: Groove by John Taylor, John had a decent drug habit going.
- 35:38Speaker 1: Some of it was documented. There is how it was
- 35:40Speaker 1: bad enough that he made some questionable acting choices in
- 35:43Speaker 1: the two thousands, such as the Flints Boy, the Flintstones. Wow,
- 35:48Speaker 1: oh my god, I'm not going to read that part, Teresa.
- 35:50Speaker 1: That's graphic. Ah right, Duran Duran, that sounds interesting. I
- 35:55Speaker 1: could get into that at Disgray Sam Pod. You guys
- 35:57Speaker 1: want to get into a conversation with me on the
- 36:00Speaker 1: Social six month seven nine oh six six six three
- 36:02Speaker 1: eight on voicemail and text.
- 36:04Speaker 7: I'm gonna take a quick break. I'll be back in
- 36:05Speaker 7: a flash.
- 36:20Speaker 1: All right, we are back. Thanks for hanging out with
- 36:23Speaker 1: me today. In the after party, listen, We're gonna doing
- 36:25Speaker 1: something a little bit different in the after party from
- 36:27Speaker 1: here on out here in this slot here. As many
- 36:30Speaker 1: of you know, we just relaunched our Hollywood Land series.
- 36:35Speaker 1: It's basically our previously known series bad Lands. Those episodes
- 36:40Speaker 1: re skinned as hollywood Land in the hollywood Land feed.
- 36:45Speaker 1: The difference being beyond the name, is that with each
- 36:48Speaker 1: episode that we release week to week, I will be
- 36:52Speaker 1: recording at the top of each episode a little contextualization,
- 36:56Speaker 1: a little bit of an introduction into my thoughts on
- 37:00Speaker 1: the story and how we developed it, how it came about,
- 37:03Speaker 1: what I think about it, how it affects the greater
- 37:07Speaker 1: Disgraceland Double Elvis universe. And I'm going at this in
- 37:12Speaker 1: the same way I would imagine some kind of nerdy
- 37:15Speaker 1: dude like myself with a bunch of VHS tapes in
- 37:19Speaker 1: his basement and he's going to pull one out every
- 37:21Speaker 1: week and play it for his audience on his cable
- 37:24Speaker 1: access show. And he's got to say a little something
- 37:26Speaker 1: at the top. So that's how I'm looking at it.
- 37:29Speaker 1: But before we get to that, in the hollywood Land
- 37:32Speaker 1: episodes that are going to be released every Monday each
- 37:34Speaker 1: week here at the after party, I'll give you some
- 37:37Speaker 1: more commentary on those hollywood Land episodes and we'll sort
- 37:41Speaker 1: of string it all together as another one of these
- 37:44Speaker 1: conversations that we have week to week here and on
- 37:48Speaker 1: social media. But for right now, there's a ton of
- 37:53Speaker 1: hollywood Land episodes available for you in the feed to
- 37:55Speaker 1: listen to. We dumped a bunch nearly forty episodes, episodes
- 37:59Speaker 1: on subject like James Dean, Paris Hilt and Danny Trejo,
- 38:04Speaker 1: Drew Barrymore, Jane Fonda, and a whole bunch of others.
- 38:08Speaker 1: And next week on Monday, which is our New Hollywoodland
- 38:12Speaker 1: release day, like I said, we're releasing our John Waters episode.
- 38:16Speaker 1: But before we get there, I wanted to play for
- 38:18Speaker 1: those of you who are new around here and for
- 38:21Speaker 1: those of you who are just into things that are
- 38:23Speaker 1: generally awesome, are New Hollywoodland trailer, so you can get
- 38:25Speaker 1: a taste of what we're doing with that show. You
- 38:28Speaker 1: can head over to the hollywood Land feed and subscribe,
- 38:31Speaker 1: So without further ado, here is the Hollywoodland Trailer. The
- 38:37Speaker 1: most dramatic nonfiction stories I've ever heard come from the
- 38:40Speaker 1: world of entertainment, specifically the dark side of entertainment. The
- 38:45Speaker 1: true crime stories from Hollywood. The mysterious death of Britney Murphy,
- 38:50Speaker 1: the vicious real life murder that inspired David Lynch's Twin Peaks,
- 38:56Speaker 1: the three conspiracies surrounding Marilyn Monroe's death, the indecent arrest
- 39:01Speaker 1: of John Waters, Dennis Hopper's easy riding and excessive seventies
- 39:05Speaker 1: Hollywood Woody Harrelson's dad's connection to the jfk assassination, and
- 39:10Speaker 1: the obsessive murder of Dorothy Stratton. Bill Murray's bust, Chris
- 39:15Speaker 1: Farley burning out too soon, Al Pacino's armed robbery, Keith
- 39:19Speaker 1: Ledger's overdose. As you can see, the list is endless,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and now all of these stories and more are available
- 39:28Speaker 1: for you to listen to in the hollywood Land podcast.
- 39:32Speaker 1: Hollywood Land is hosted by me Jake Brennan, creator and
- 39:36Speaker 1: host of the award winning music and true crime podcast Disgraceland.
- 39:40Speaker 1: In hollywood Land, you can expect the same deep research,
- 39:44Speaker 1: immersive sound design, and edge of your seat scripted storytelling
- 39:48Speaker 1: that myself and the team at Double Elvis have brought
- 39:51Speaker 1: to you over the years in Disgraceland. Right now you
- 39:54Speaker 1: can binge over thirty episodes of hollywood Land on James Dean, Paris, Hilton,
- 39:58Speaker 1: Andy Warhol, riverfe Phoenix, Alfred Hitchcock, and more. Episodes of
- 40:03Speaker 1: hollywood Land are released every Monday and are available everywhere.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Follow and subscribe on the Odissey app, Apple podcasts or
- 40:10Speaker 1: wherever you get your podcasts. All right, that's hollywood Land,
- 40:15Speaker 1: and this is the part of the after party where
- 40:17Speaker 1: I implore you once again to follow and subscribe to

- 40:43Speaker 1: term it. Go ahead, do that there we go. All right, now, listen,
- 40:46Speaker 1: you're not gonna want to miss our John Waters episode,
- 40:49Speaker 1: or our upcoming David Lynch episode in hollywood Land, or
- 40:53Speaker 1: any of the episodes from our archive that we have
- 40:55Speaker 1: coming your way every Monday. For those Monday episodes, like
- 40:58Speaker 1: I said, I'm gonna be teeing up each episode with
- 41:00Speaker 1: a new introduction that digs a little deeper into each
- 41:02Speaker 1: of the episode's subjects, helps better frame the story for you.
- 41:06Speaker 1: If you need further convincing, you can head over to
- 41:09Speaker 1: get over to the reviews over on Apple podcasts over
- 41:12Speaker 1: on Spotify. Look at what people are saying about hollywood Land.
- 41:15Speaker 1: They're loving it, just like they're loving Disgraceland, just like
- 41:18Speaker 1: they're leaving reviews for Disgrace Saying. We get into these
- 41:20Speaker 1: reviews every week because they improve discovery. It helps the
- 41:23Speaker 1: algorithm deliver the show to new listeners in their apps.
- 41:27Speaker 1: I appreciate all the reviews from all of you guys.
- 41:29Speaker 1: I'm currently logged out of Spotify Creators for some reason.
- 41:33Speaker 1: It hates me right now. Oh no, I'm back in
- 41:35Speaker 1: there we are, and I'll give you this little taste
- 41:37Speaker 1: here from Jeff Barrett about our James Dean episode of
- 41:40Speaker 1: Hollywood Land. Jeff rightsy, and this right here is the
- 41:43Speaker 1: best episode of Hollywood Land. It sounds like a Clint
- 41:46Speaker 1: Eastwood western. That is a massive compliment, Jeff, I really
- 41:50Speaker 1: appreciate it. We take our sound design very seriously. I'm
- 41:52Speaker 1: glad you doug it. People are also talking about our
- 41:54Speaker 1: George Reeves episode are Drew Barrymore Episodello Desuso writes in quote,
- 42:02Speaker 1: Drew was a modern day Shirley Temple who is too
- 42:04Speaker 1: bad ass to drink Shirley Temples unquote. Thank you so
- 42:08Speaker 1: much for these reviews, guys on Hollywood Land. Guys, check

- 42:30Speaker 1: over over on Spotify, Anthony Dixon writes, fantastic episode, Jake,
- 42:34Speaker 1: masterful storytelling here. You made the hopelessness of Lane's jungle
- 42:38Speaker 1: very visceral. Thank you very much. I had a hand
- 42:41Speaker 1: in the storytelling. But I didn't write this episode. Zeth
- 42:43Speaker 1: Lundy did, so he deserves all the credit for that.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Over on Apple Podcasts, Dirty One, Doug writes in Hey,
- 42:50Speaker 1: new listener, awesome show. I just found you. I don't

- 43:16Speaker 1: Susan P. I'm just gonna say subject. Seattle made me
- 43:20Speaker 1: sign up for membership message. I've been listening to you
- 43:23Speaker 1: for over a year and I love everything you put
- 43:26Speaker 1: out there, but never felt the need to subscribe until
- 43:29Speaker 1: the Alice and Chains podcast, and not even really because
- 43:32Speaker 1: I'm enamored with the Seattle sound. I actually wasn't a
- 43:35Speaker 1: fan at first, but you asked a question about which
- 43:37Speaker 1: Seattle band spoke to me, which artist? Hendricks one hundred percent.
- 43:43Speaker 1: I'm not from the Pacific Northwest, but a close family
- 43:46Speaker 1: member lives there and I've visited many times. And if
- 43:48Speaker 1: you ever visit Aberdeen, you kind of get it. There's
- 43:50Speaker 1: also a great guitar shop there, as well as the
- 43:52Speaker 1: best shrimp cocktail. My husband and I have a great
- 43:54Speaker 1: story about standing outside the Gibson store near Pike's place.
- 43:58Speaker 1: He's a guitarist from Detroit. Gibbs in Seattle is by
- 44:01Speaker 1: appointment only, but a passer by musician said, yeah, you
- 44:04Speaker 1: have to call them. But there's a great bar up
- 44:06Speaker 1: the street called Cyclops. So we were down with that
- 44:09Speaker 1: total goth scene. We weren't properly dressed, but we are open.
- 44:12Speaker 1: So my husband is a huge grunge fan, so that's
- 44:14Speaker 1: what he's telling everyone. So the person that invited us said,
- 44:16Speaker 1: you know, Nirvana started out at a bar about a
- 44:18Speaker 1: block away, and so we went and the waitress had
- 44:21Speaker 1: worked there during Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc. And it's maybe
- 44:24Speaker 1: eight hundred capacity. I digress Hendrix was a masterclass. Are
- 44:28Speaker 1: you experienced? Susan from the six to one to five Susan,
- 44:32Speaker 1: Thank you so much. Appreciate the little storytelling there in

- 46:49Speaker 1: she likes the Lemonheads. Buffalo Tom and the Lemonheads both
- 46:52Speaker 1: appear in the Rick James episode, which doesn't make any
- 46:56Speaker 1: sense when you hear it like that, but trust me,
