- 0:00Father, we thank you, Lord, for today.
- 0:02We thank you for this week. We thank you for the things
- 0:04you've already taught us, Lord, through your word.
- 0:06Tonight we want you to open our hearts and minds to understand
- 0:10more of what you have for us as your children.
- 0:13We love you, Lord, and that's why we're here, and that's why
- 0:15we want to study the Word of God.
- 0:17And that's why, Lord, we anticipate that what you're
- 0:20going to teach us tonight, we'll stick with this, not just for a
- 0:23brief moment, but for the rest of our lives.
- 0:26We just thank you, Lord, that you have allowed us the
- 0:28opportunity to study your word. It's such a, a precious,
- 0:32precious tool. And we are so grateful that
- 0:36you've given it to us to equip us, to teach us, to lead us and
- 0:40to guide us, to comfort us and to move us on to maturity in
- 0:44Christ. May that happen in all of us
- 0:47this evening. Lord, we pray in Jesus name,
- 0:51Amen. Now by now, hopefully you have
- 0:57been able to understand and answer more of what it means to
- 1:02to be a Christian. I hope that's the case because
- 1:07if someone was to ask you what is a Christian, I, I'm sure that
- 1:12you'd be able to explain things maybe hopefully better than you
- 1:16could have seven weeks ago. But I'm sure that if someone
- 1:21asks you what is a Christian, you would tell them that a
- 1:23Christian is known by, by their decision.
- 1:27And that decision is based on Luke 923, right?
- 1:31That if any man come after me, let him deny himself, take up
- 1:34his cross and follow me. And so you'd also tell them that
- 1:39a Christian is known not just by the decision that he or she
- 1:43makes, but by the definition of Scripture.
- 1:46And that is in Philippians chapter 3 verse #3 that we are
- 1:50the marked ones, we are the circumcision, we worship God in
- 1:54spirit, we glory only in Christ Jesus, and we put no confidence
- 2:00in the flesh. That is the best definition of a
- 2:04Christian in the Scriptures. Philippians 3 verse #3 You'd
- 2:10also be able to explain to them that a Christian is known by by
- 2:15description. That is second Corinthians 517
- 2:20that a Christian is described by being in Christ.
- 2:24For the man be in Christ. He is a new creation.
- 2:27Old things are passed away. Behold, all things have become
- 2:30new. That's how it is.
- 2:32A Christian is described in the Bible.
- 2:35They are in Christ and Christ is in them.
- 2:40And then you'd be able to say, well, a Christian is also known
- 2:43by declaration. They have a declaration that
- 2:46they speak loudly, without hesitation and without
- 2:50reservation, that Jesus Christ is the Son of the living God,
- 2:57that Jesus is the Messiah, and that he is God in the flesh.
- 3:03Every Christian understands that.
- 3:07And next a Christian is known by by his dedication.
- 3:11Philippians one verse #21 For it to me, to live is Christ, and to
- 3:16die is gain. A Christian is dedicating to
- 3:19living for Christ because they want to live for no one else but
- 3:24the Christ. And then a Christian is known by
- 3:28his or her denunciation. That is, they denounce the
- 3:32things of the world, so much so they're willing to put to death
- 3:35the members of their body in order to glorify and honor the
- 3:39Christ. That's Colossians 3 verses 1 to
- 3:428. That was last week's lesson.
- 3:46Tonight I want to talk to you about the Christians devotion.
- 3:51The Christian is devoted to one thing and one thing only.
- 3:58The difference between dedication and devotion is this.
- 4:04A person who is dedicated is committed to one purpose.
- 4:11A person who is devoted is committed to one person.
- 4:18A person who is dedicated is committed to that purpose, but
- 4:25it demonstrates itself by a disciplined pursuit of
- 4:32fulfilling that purpose. A person who is devoted is
- 4:37committed to one purpose, and to fulfill that purpose, they are
- 4:45deeply passionate toward that person.
- 4:49That's the difference between the Christian's dedication and
- 4:52the Christian's devotion. And So what is the Christian
- 4:56devoted to? He's devoted to one thing.
- 4:59It's summed up in one verse, Second Corinthians chapter 5
- 5:03verse #9 where the apostle Paul said it very clearly this way.
- 5:11Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or
- 5:17absent, to be pleasing to him, Paul says.
- 5:24I have one ambition, I have one drive, I have one passion.
- 5:31I am completely devoted to doing one thing and that is pleasing
- 5:39the Lord. You see, you are either going to
- 5:42please the Lord or you're going to please yourself.
- 5:49It's very clear that in Romans chapter one that those whom the
- 5:53wrath of God is poured out upon are those who want to please
- 5:58themselves. They want to worship the
- 6:00creature rather than worship the Creator.
- 6:04And God pours out His wrath upon those people.
- 6:09Paul would say it this way in the book of Ephesians, Ephesians
- 6:13chapter 5. He would say this, let no one
- 6:17deceive you, verse number six with empty words.
- 6:19For because of these things, the wrath of God comes upon the sons
- 6:23of disobedience. Therefore do not be partakers
- 6:26with them. For you were formerly darkness,
- 6:28but now you are light in the Lord.
- 6:30Walk as children of light. For the fruit of the light
- 6:34consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth.
- 6:37Trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.
- 6:44Paul says, Seek to please the Lord.
- 6:48Walk as children of the light live in a way that honors and
- 6:54glorifies the name of the Lord. You were created for this
- 7:00purpose. Revelation chapter 4 verse #11
- 7:05All things were created for His desire or for His pleasure.
- 7:13Everything was created for the pleasure of God.
- 7:17Therefore, His creation is designed to please their God.
- 7:23Those who don't experience the wrath of God.
- 7:28When you seek to please yourself, it is foreign to the
- 7:34original purpose for which you were created.
- 7:39The Bible says in Psalm 115, verse #3 that the Lord is in the
- 7:43heavens. He does whatever He pleases.
- 7:48In Psalm 135 it says this in verse #5 For I know that the
- 7:52Lord is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.
- 7:55Whatever the Lord pleases, He does in heaven and in earth, in
- 8:02the seas, and in all the deep. Interesting that Jesus said in
- 8:10John chapter 8 verse #29 I always do those things that are
- 8:18pleasing to the Father. Our Lord's devotion was seen in
- 8:26that statement. I always do those things that
- 8:31are pleasing to the Father for us to be like Christ.
- 8:38We then too want to do all things that are pleasing to the
- 8:44Father. That was our Lord's ambition.
- 8:47That was our Lord's devotion. That was Paul's ambition.
- 8:51That was Paul's devotion. That should be the devotion of
- 8:54every single believer. They want to please the Lord
- 9:00over in Romans chapter 15, Romans chapter 15, the apostle
- 9:07Paul says these words in verse #1 He says now we who are strong
- 9:17ought to bear the weaknesses of those without strength and not
- 9:22just please ourselves. Each of us is to please his
- 9:28neighbor for his good, to his edification, for even Christ did
- 9:35not please himself. But as it is written, the
- 9:39reproaches of those who reproached you fell upon me.
- 9:45Paul says, If you want to be like Christ, then you need to
- 9:49understand that Christ did not please himself.
- 9:53No, He sought to please his Father.
- 9:57Therefore you were looking out for the welfare of others, for
- 10:02those who want to please themselves.
- 10:05I'm not looking out for the welfare of others.
- 10:08They're looking out for their own welfare.
- 10:11But Christ wasn't that way. And so in order to be like
- 10:15Christ, then you want to please the Lord.
- 10:20Paul said in Galatians chapter one verse #10 these words.
- 10:27For I am now seeking the favor of men or of God.
- 10:30Or am I striving to please men? If I were still trying to please
- 10:35men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ, Paul
- 10:42said. If I seek to please man, I cease
- 10:47to be a bondservant of Christ. In other words, a bondservant
- 10:52seeks to please his master. So if I seek to please men, I
- 10:57cease to find the favor of God or I cease to please God.
- 11:04Now this is hard for us because we are narcissistic at nature.
- 11:10Everything in our lives revolves around us, or so we think it
- 11:15does. Or we want it too, right?
- 11:18We want it to revolve around us. We want people to please us.
- 11:23And we are more men pleasers than we are God pleasers.
- 11:28Just ask yourself how you converse with other people so
- 11:32that they like you and not confront them when they live in
- 11:36sin. That would make you a man
- 11:38pleaser, not a God pleaser. And if you're going to live out
- 11:43your devotion, you are devoted to pleasing God above all else.
- 11:49That's so incredibly important. Over in Colossians chapter 3,
- 11:54Paul says these words verse #22 slaves and all things.
- 12:00Obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external
- 12:05service as those who merely please men, but with sincerity
- 12:09of heart, fearing the Lord. Whatever you do, do you work
- 12:12hardly As for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from
- 12:18the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance is the
- 12:22Lord Christ whom you serve. So whatever you do, you, you
- 12:27seek to please the Lord. The apostle Paul knew this.
- 12:31So in Second Corinthians chapter 5, after he says in verse #9
- 12:38that it is his ambition to please God, he says in verse #10
- 12:42For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ so
- 12:46that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body
- 12:51according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
- 12:56Poemics are very clear that the reason I please the Lord is
- 13:00because one day I will stand before my Lord.
- 13:04I will be judged before my Lord. And this is not a judgment of
- 13:08condemnation. This is not the Great White
- 13:11Throne judgment of Revelation chapter 20, that that's a
- 13:15judgment for unbelievers, not for believers.
- 13:20This judgment is only for believers and this judgment is
- 13:25is what they call a a Bema seat. And the Bema seat was a raised
- 13:29platform where those who who were winners of their athletic
- 13:34contest would stand upon and receive a wreath for their
- 13:39victory. Paul is talking about the
- 13:42judgment seat of Christ being that platform by which believers
- 13:47step up on and receive their crowns, and at that time they
- 13:54will receive that which is done on their body, whether it be
- 13:56good or whether it be bad or whether it be evil.
- 14:00That's not the word, for it's not the word Ponte, Ross or
- 14:05kakia which deals with evil, but it's the word phallos which
- 14:11deals with worthless or useless. In other words, the things that
- 14:15you do based on the motive for pleasing God are those things
- 14:19that are good, those that were based on the motive for pleasing
- 14:22myself. Those things are useless and
- 14:26they are burned up, and they are not attributed to whatever it is
- 14:31you have done. What you think in the name of
- 14:33Christ is because your motive was wrong.
- 14:35Your motive was to please yourself, and God is the one who
- 14:38weighs the heart. God knows those things, so God
- 14:41will judge you based on the motive of your heart as to why
- 14:46you did what you did. That's why Paul says I make it
- 14:48my ambition. This is my soul devotion to
- 14:51please the Lord, please the Lord and how I speak, please the Lord
- 14:55and what I do, please the Lord above men.
- 15:00The Bible says these words in the book of Hebrews chapter 13
- 15:05verse #20 Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the
- 15:12great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the eternal
- 15:15covenant, even Jesus our Lord, equip you and every good thing
- 15:20to do His will, working in us that which is pleasing in His
- 15:26sight through Jesus Christ, through whom be the glory
- 15:30forever and ever. Amen.
- 15:34The right of Hebrews makes it very clear that God is working
- 15:37in you, the Good Shepherd is working in you to equip you, to
- 15:42put you together so that you will do those things that are
- 15:47pleasing to the Lord. Solomon said in Proverbs 16
- 15:54verse #7 When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even
- 16:00his enemies to be at peace with him.
- 16:05That's just an incredible statement.
- 16:07When a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies
- 16:12to be at peace with him. Years ago, it must have been at
- 16:17least 20 years ago now, I was talking to an individual who had
- 16:21come to see me about his marriage, and he came to me and
- 16:26poured out his heart. He says I need to leave my wife,
- 16:29I can't be with her anymore. I can't stand to be around her.
- 16:34I said, why can't you stand to be around your wife?
- 16:37He goes. She is the most critical person
- 16:41I've ever met. She has to support me in
- 16:43anything. In fact, I really believe that
- 16:47she is my biggest enemy, therefore I need to leave her.
- 16:56I said I got good news, he says you got good news.
- 16:59I said I got good, I got great news, he says.
- 17:02What's the good news? I said, Well, by your own words
- 17:06you said she was your enemy, and the Bible says you are to love
- 17:10your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
- 17:15On top of that, you can do that because Romans 55 says that the
- 17:19love of God is shed abroad in your heart.
- 17:21In other words, the love of God is everywhere already in your
- 17:24heart. And Galatians chapter 5, verse
- 17:2823 says the fruit of the Spirit is love.
- 17:32So here's the good news. You can love your wife who is
- 17:36your enemy, because the love of God is shed abroad in your
- 17:39heart. And the fruit of the Spirit is
- 17:40love. And the Spirit of God is going
- 17:42to produce love in you that you might reach out and volitionally
- 17:45love your wife as Christ. Love the church.
- 17:50He goes, that's not good news. I said that's great news.
- 17:54I said, what do you mean? That's the best news ever?
- 17:57See, you can do this. You're telling me you can't.
- 18:00I'm telling you, you can. Why?
- 18:03Because of what God has done. And when you when you listen,
- 18:07when a man's ways please the Lord, he makes even his enemies
- 18:15to be at peace with him. If your wife truly is your
- 18:18enemy, don't you want your wife to be at peace with you?
- 18:22If that's the case, then your ways must please the Lord.
- 18:26And how do you know you're going to please the Lord?
- 18:28By loving your wife as Christ loved the church, by nurturing
- 18:32her, by protecting her, by caring for her.
- 18:35This is a great opportunity for you to demonstrate to your wife
- 18:39who Jesus Christ is. This is great counsel.
- 18:45He didn't accept the counsel. Unfortunately, he didn't want to
- 18:47do that. He thought it was beyond him.
- 18:50I tried to help him understand that it wasn't beyond him
- 18:53because God is working in Him so that He can please the Lord
- 18:59Jesus Christ. You see, so many times we forget
- 19:04that we have a we have a responsibility to honor and
- 19:09glorify the name of Christ, to be pleasing to Him.
- 19:14But the problem is, the problem is, as Paul says in Second
- 19:19Timothy chapter 3 verse #2 that in the end times, men will be
- 19:24lovers of self and lovers of pleasure more than lovers of
- 19:30God. And that's very true.
- 19:34We, we really do love ourselves, so much so that we don't
- 19:40necessarily want to love other people, and we certainly don't
- 19:44want to please the Lord because we're too busy trying to please
- 19:49ourselves. Solomon was this way, right?
- 19:55We read for you a couple of weeks ago from Ecclesiastes
- 19:56chapter 2, where Stalin said I'm going to do this for myself, I'm
- 19:59going to do this for myself, I'm going to do this for myself and
- 20:03enlist all these things he did just for himself.
- 20:07It was all empty. It was all futile.
- 20:12But but why did, why did he do that?
- 20:15Well, the answer lies in the Book of Second Kings Chapter 11,
- 20:22which says these words. Now King Solomon loved many
- 20:25foreign women, along with the daughters of Pharaoh, Moabite,
- 20:29Ammonite, Edomite, Sidonian, and Hittite, women from the nations
- 20:35concerning which the Lord had said to the sons of Israel, You
- 20:37shall not associate with them, nor shall they associate with
- 20:41you, for they will surely turn your heart away after their
- 20:45gods. Solomon held fast to these in
- 20:51love, in spite of what God said, He held fast to those he loved.
- 21:02And then it says he had 700 wives, princesses and 300
- 21:07concubines, and his wives turned his heart away.
- 21:13For when Solomon was old, his wives turned his heart away
- 21:17after other gods, and his heart was not holy, devoted to the
- 21:26Lord. His devotion was not to please
- 21:30the Lord. His devotion was to please
- 21:34himself. His devotion was all about him.
- 21:39He was devoted to doing whatever suited him best.
- 21:44Forget about what God said. Forget about what God commanded.
- 21:50He wanted to please himself, and Ecclesiastes 2 says he did not
- 21:56withhold one thing that would bring pleasure to himself.
- 22:01Not one. He found out it was all futile,
- 22:05it was all empty, but his heart was turned away.
- 22:11It says his heart was not wholly devoted to the Lord his God, as
- 22:17the heart of David his father had been.
- 22:22David's heart was devoted to his God.
- 22:26Solomon's heart was not. For Solomon went after Astaroth,
- 22:30the goddess of the Sedonians, and after Milkham, the
- 22:34detestable idol of the Ammonites.
- 22:36Solomon did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, and did not
- 22:39follow the Lord fully, as David his father had done.
- 22:43Then Solomon built high a high place for Chemish, the
- 22:48detestable idol of Moab on the mountain which is east of
- 22:51Jerusalem, and for Molech, the detestable idol of the sons of
- 22:55Ammon. Thus also he did for all his
- 22:58foreign wives, and burned incense, and sacrificed to their
- 23:03gods. Now the Lord was angry with
- 23:06Solomon, because his heart was turned away from the Lord, the
- 23:10God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
- 23:12And it commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not
- 23:15go after other gods. But he did not observe what the
- 23:19Lord had commanded. So the Lord said to Solomon,
- 23:22because you have done this and you have not kept my covenant in
- 23:26my statutes which I've commanded you, I will surely tear the
- 23:31Kingdom from you and will give it to your servant.
- 23:38Here's the king of Israel whose devotion was not to God but to
- 23:45his own self, and it ended up dividing the Kingdom of Israel.
- 23:51God didn't do it till after Solomon died.
- 23:53God was gracious to Solomon for 40 years has he reigned as king.
- 23:59There was no wars in Israel. Complete and total peace.
- 24:04God bless them because of his father David.
- 24:07But yet when he died, the Kingdom was divided simply
- 24:14because he was not devoted fully to the Lord is God.
- 24:24You see, whatever you're devoted to, you love, right?
- 24:30Whatever you're devoted to, you love.
- 24:32That's why you, you, you need to stay true to the Lord.
- 24:38And so if you love your wife, you're you're, you're devoted to
- 24:41your wife. If you love your kids, you're
- 24:43devoted to your kids. If you're devoted to the Lord,
- 24:46if you love the Lord, you're devoted to the Lord.
- 24:49See our our devotion wanes because of our of our love for
- 24:53God. That wanes.
- 24:57And therefore we need to realize that the Christian is known by
- 25:00his devotion. He wants to please the Lord.
- 25:07For those of you who love your wives, which I trust all of you
- 25:10do, you want to please your wife.
- 25:15Those of you who who love your children, you want to please
- 25:18your children. Children want love their wives.
- 25:20Excuse me, Children who love their parents, that they want to
- 25:23please their parents, right? If you love your parents, you
- 25:27don't want to displease them. And if you love your wife, you
- 25:31don't want to displease her. If you love the Lord, you don't
- 25:35want to displease them, you want to please them.
- 25:41So the question comes, how do you please the Lord?
- 25:44Simple question, very simply answered in the scriptures.
- 25:50Let me answer it for you. You want to please the Lord.
- 25:54Those who please the Lord please him by proclaiming the message
- 26:00of the cross. You please him by proclaiming
- 26:05the message of the cross. Listen to what Paul says in
- 26:12First Corinthians chapter one verse #18 For the word of the
- 26:16cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who
- 26:19are being saved, that is the power of God.
- 26:22For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
- 26:26and the cleverness of the clever.
- 26:28I will set aside, Where is the wise man?
- 26:31Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this
- 26:34age? Has not God made foolish the
- 26:37wisdom of the world? For a sense in the wisdom of
- 26:40God? The world through its wisdom did
- 26:43not come to know God. God was well pleased through the
- 26:48foolishness of the message preached to save those who
- 26:53believe. When you proclaim the message of
- 26:57the cross, you please the Lord, because he was well pleased
- 27:03through the message that the world calls foolishness to bring
- 27:07about the salvation of lost souls.
- 27:11It's interesting that Paul would quote from the book of Isaiah as
- 27:16an illustration about the power of God.
- 27:20Once the Nekireb would come with the Assyrian army against Judah,
- 27:26Hezekiah would want to revert to the ways of wisdom, the counsel
- 27:33that he would receive from those in leadership.
- 27:37And God said, don't do that. Trust me, I am the all powerful
- 27:43God, I will deliver you, but you got to trust me and God did.
- 27:50The Angel of the Lord came and one foul swoop killed 185,000
- 27:56Assyrians. And God made it very clear that
- 28:00your victory comes through me and my power, not through you
- 28:05and worldly wisdom. Paul uses that as an
- 28:10illustration to say, you know what?
- 28:12God's gospel is powerful. The message of the cross is
- 28:17powerful. Just preach.
- 28:20That message you're preaching does not make the message
- 28:26powerful. The message of the cross is
- 28:30powerful in and of itself. You don't make it powerful.
- 28:36God made it powerful. That's why Paul said, For I am
- 28:40not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of
- 28:43God unto salvation to the Jew 1st and also to the Greeks.
- 28:47Paul says I'm not ashamed of the gospel.
- 28:49Why? Because the gospel has the power
- 28:51in and of itself to save men. You being filled with the Spirit
- 28:57don't make the gospel any more powerful than it is.
- 29:01It's powerful in and of itself. It's powerful not to save
- 29:05people. That's why it's well pleasing to
- 29:08the Lord when you proclaim the message of the cross.
- 29:14But the cross is foolishness to the unbeliever.
- 29:17It's a stumbling block to the Jew.
- 29:20Remember in that encounter that Christ had with Peter and the
- 29:24apostles in Matthew chapter 16, when the great confession was
- 29:28made, that great declaration now with the Christ, the Son of the
- 29:31living God, when Christ said, Who do men say that I am?
- 29:36Who do you say that I am? And then Christ said something
- 29:39very interesting. He said, don't tell them what
- 29:41you just said. Instead, tell them this.
- 29:48Tell them that the Son of Man must go to Jerusalem, suffer
- 29:52many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, be
- 29:56killed, and be raised up on the third day.
- 30:01Don't tell them that the Messiah is the Son of the living God.
- 30:05Tell them that the Messiah is going to die and rise again.
- 30:11And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying God
- 30:15forbid. Why?
- 30:17Because the message of the cross is foolishness to the Jew, and
- 30:23the Bible says cursed as everyone who hangs upon a cross.
- 30:26Peter knows that. So why would you take upon
- 30:30yourself a curse and die and rise again?
- 30:36The Christ says this is what you need to proclaim freely for all
- 30:39to hear, because that's the message.
- 30:43That's foolishness to the world, but is the power of salvation to
- 30:48men. And Peter only had in mind the
- 30:51things of man. That's why Christ said, get thee
- 30:54behind me, Satan. Peter was being used by Satan to
- 30:58detract Christ from the mission of the cross because the cross
- 31:03is central to the mission of Christianity.
- 31:06And we'll talk more about this in weeks to come.
- 31:09But when you proclaim the message of the cross, it is
- 31:13pleasing to the Lord. So if you want to please Him,
- 31:17you proclaim the message of the cross.
- 31:21Not only proclaiming the message of the cross is pleasing to the
- 31:23Lord, but living a life of faith is pleasing to the Lord.
- 31:28Living a life of faith. Hebrews 11 verse #6 For without
- 31:31faith it is impossible to please Him.
- 31:36Impossible. So in order to please the Lord,
- 31:39you must be living a life of faith.
- 31:41What is faith? Faith is defined by two words,
- 31:44trusting, obedience. That's what faith is.
- 31:48Faith is, if you recall our study in Hebrews Chapter 11,
- 31:51where we spent 17 weeks in Hebrews Chapter 11, that faith
- 31:56is believing absolutely in what God said, and faith is behaving
- 32:02accordingly to what God said. That is trusting obedience.
- 32:08It behaves absolutely or believes absolutely in
- 32:13everything that God said without reservation and then behaves
- 32:18accordingly to what God said. That's faith.
- 32:21That's living the life of faith. That's why it says in Hebrews
- 32:2611/5 about Enoch that Enoch had this testimony that he walked
- 32:31with God and was well pleasing to God and God took him.
- 32:35Enoch was well pleasing to God. Why?
- 32:39Because he lived a life of faith.
- 32:42And therefore, in order to please God, you must live a life
- 32:46of faith. And remember, Enoch was 65 years
- 32:49old, according to Justice chapter 5, when he began to walk
- 32:52with God. He died at age 365 S.
- 32:57For 300 years, Enoch had this testimony that he pleased God.
- 33:06That was a man of supreme devotion.
- 33:09He wanted to please his God. So the writer of Hebrews comes
- 33:14around and says, listen, without this kind of faith it's
- 33:17impossible to please God. For he who comes to God must
- 33:22believe that he is and that he is a rewarder of those who
- 33:25diligently seek him. Faith not only costs you, but
- 33:30faith always compensates you. It rewards those who diligently
- 33:35seek him. So in order to please the Lord,
- 33:39you must proclaim the message of the cross.
- 33:42You must live a life of faith, that is believing in what God
- 33:49has said, looking at His Word, trusting what He says is true,
- 33:55and saying, Lord, you said it, it's true.
- 34:00I'm going to follow it no matter what others might think, what
- 34:05others might say. Lord, I'm going to do what your
- 34:08word says because I'm going to live a life of trusting
- 34:13obedience in the living God #3 Faith is proclaiming the message
- 34:20of the cross, living the life of faith, and exalting Jesus Christ
- 34:25the Son of God. When you exalt Christ, the Son
- 34:31of God, when you lift Christ high, when you acknowledge His
- 34:37glory, when you acknowledge the fact that He is to be magnified
- 34:44in through your life, that is, He used to be seen so big in
- 34:51your life, you please the Lord. Matthew 3 verse #17 The Lord at
- 34:57the baptism, the voice out of heaven came.
- 35:01This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
- 35:08Listen to what Paul says in Colossians chapter 1.
- 35:15Colossians chapter one verse #15 He is the image of the invisible
- 35:20God, the first born of all creation.
- 35:22For by Him all things were created both in the heavens and
- 35:24on earth, visible and invisible, with the Thrones of dominion or
- 35:29rulers or authorities. All things have been created
- 35:31through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in
- 35:34Him all things are held together.
- 35:36He is also head of the body of the Church, and He is the
- 35:40beginning, the first born from the dead, so that He Himself
- 35:44will come to have first place in everything.
- 35:47For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to
- 35:52dwell in Him. It pleased the Father for the
- 35:57fullness of the Godhead to dwell in Him.
- 36:01He is preeminent, He is above all things.
- 36:05He's all powerful because He created all things, and
- 36:09therefore all the fullness of God dwells in Him.
- 36:12So whenever you exalt the Son, you are bringing pleasure to
- 36:17God, because that's the Son that brought pleasure to God.
- 36:23Therefore when you exalt the Son, you are pleasing the Lord.
- 36:29John 5 verse 23 says He, he who does not honor the Son, does not
- 36:41honor the Father who sent the Son.
- 36:47In other words, he who does not exalt the Son, he who does not
- 36:51glorify the Son, he who does not put the Son first, does not
- 36:58honor the Father who sent the Son.
- 37:03And therefore, in order to be well pleasing to the Lord, you
- 37:07honor the Son of God. So proclaiming the message of
- 37:12the cross, living the life of faith, exalting Jesus Christ the
- 37:16son #4 asking God for wisdom brings pleasure to God, asking
- 37:24God for wisdom. First kings three.
- 37:28God said to Solomon, Ask me anything that you want, and I
- 37:33will give it to you. And Solomon asks, Give your
- 37:37servant an understanding heart to judge your people, to discern
- 37:42between good and evil, for who was able to judge the great
- 37:46people of yours? Verse 10 It was pleasing in the
- 37:52sight of the Lord that Solomon had asked this thing.
- 37:59Solomon asked for wisdom in order to discern between good
- 38:02and evil, and it pleased the Lord.
- 38:06So when you go to the Lord and you ask for wisdom, it brings
- 38:10pleasure to Him. Why?
- 38:13Because you're not relying upon human wisdom, You're not relying
- 38:17upon your own understanding. You're relying upon the Lord who
- 38:22gives you wisdom. Over in the book of Colossians,
- 38:26the first chapter, Paul says this verse #9 for this reason
- 38:31also, since the day we heard of it, we have not ceased to pray
- 38:34for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of
- 38:38His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding.
- 38:42Paul prays that they would be filled with spiritual wisdom so
- 38:46that you will walk in a manner worthy the Lord to please Him in
- 38:51all respects. In other words, we're asking God
- 38:53to fill you with all wisdom so that you can walk in a manner
- 38:56that is pleasing to the Lord. You can't please the Lord
- 38:59without wisdom, He says, Bearing fruit in every good work,
- 39:06increasing in the knowledge of God, strengthen with all power
- 39:09according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all
- 39:12steadfastness and patience, joyously giving thanks to the
- 39:16Father who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the
- 39:20Saints in light. In order to walk worthy of the
- 39:24Lord, those things must happen. In order to for that to happen,
- 39:27you must ask God for wisdom that comes, and it's pleasing to him.
- 39:32Therefore you begin to bear fruit because you are pleasing
- 39:36to the Lord. That's why James says, if any of
- 39:40you ask, ask wisdom, let him ask James one verse #5 and those of
- 39:47you ask, God gives generously. God gives without condemnation,
- 39:54without rebuke, so that you don't become a double minded
- 39:58man, but that you become a man singularly focused upon God.
- 40:05So if you lack wisdom, you ask for wisdom.
- 40:08Why? Because wisdom pleases God.
- 40:11Pleasing God means you proclaim the message of the cross, you
- 40:15live a life of faith, you exalt Jesus Christ's Son, you ask God
- 40:20for wisdom #5 you stay away. From sexual sin you should know
- 40:29this. First Thessalonians chapter 4.
- 40:34We spent many weeks here. Finally then, brethren, verse
- 40:39one, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that as you
- 40:43receive from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and
- 40:46please God, just as you actually do walk, that you excel still
- 40:51more. For you know what commandments
- 40:54we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
- 40:57For this is the will of God, your sanctification, that is
- 41:02that you abstain from sexual immorality.
- 41:07Paul says we want you to walk and please God.
- 41:15In order to walk a life that's pleasing to God, you must
- 41:20abstain from sexual immorality. So many people, so many people
- 41:29don't want to do that. Even in the church.
- 41:34They just don't want to abstain. Why?
- 41:38Because they're lovers of self rather than lovers of God.
- 41:43They're lovers of pleasure rather than they are lovers of
- 41:46God. Those who are devoted to the
- 41:50Lord want to please the Lord. Your devotion begins to wane
- 41:57when you engage in sexual immorality.
- 42:00Why? Because you find yourself
- 42:03willing to give in to those sensual desires we talked about
- 42:07last week that need to be put to death so that you can walk in a
- 42:11manner that's pleasing to the Lord.
- 42:15Staying away from sexual immorality is pleasing to God
- 42:20and look at Solomon's life. He just could not stay away. 700
- 42:27wives, 300 concubines. How do you celebrate an
- 42:34anniversary with 700 wives? How do you do that?
- 42:39There's not enough days in a year to celebrate an anniversary
- 42:43with all those wives, right? And so, but he could not forego
- 42:50his own pleasures, his own desires, and therefore his heart
- 42:56was turned away. He was not devoted to his God
- 42:59fully like his father David was. And he continued in sin.
- 43:04And of course, the book of Ecclesiastes is a record of his
- 43:08downfall. And so we need to realize that
- 43:11that in order to please God, you just stay away from sexual sin.
- 43:20Number six, you want to please God.
- 43:24Please pleasing God comes because you imitate the Christ.
- 43:29You imitate the Christ. John 829 we quoted to you
- 43:35earlier says, I always do those things that are pleasing to the
- 43:42Father. So in order for us to please the
- 43:47Lord, we imitate the Christ. We do what He did.
- 43:53We seek to please the Father because we want to imitate the
- 43:58Lord Jesus. How badly do you want to be like
- 44:02Christ? How badly do you want to walk
- 44:05like Christ? How badly do you want to be
- 44:07Christ like? In your behavior then, you seek
- 44:11to please the Father as the Son, please the Father.
- 44:18Over in first John chapter 3 verse 22, John says whatever we
- 44:28ask we receive from him because we keep His commandments and do
- 44:37the things that are pleasing in a sight.
- 44:44You want to know why you ask for things and do not receive them?
- 44:47It's because you do not do things that are pleasing in the
- 44:49sight. Paul says we know.
- 44:52John says we know them when we ask.
- 44:54We receive what we ask because we keep His commandments, and in
- 44:57keeping His commandments, we're doing those things that are
- 45:00pleasing in His sight. So whatever you're asking God
- 45:04for and you're not getting an answer to, ask yourself this
- 45:06question. Am I doing those things that are
- 45:09pleasing in the sight of God? Am I proclaiming the message of
- 45:14the cross? Am I living a life of faith?
- 45:17Am I exalting Jesus Christ, the Son above myself and everything
- 45:21else? Am I asking God for wisdom?
- 45:24Am I staying away from sexual sin?
- 45:26And am I imitating the Christ? Because if you are, you will
- 45:32always do those things that are pleasing to the Father.
- 45:37Now granted, Jesus Christ is the perfect Son of man.
- 45:44He is sinless and we are sinful. That's why last week's lesson
- 45:50was so important that we are constantly putting to death the
- 45:54members of our body. Why?
- 45:57Because it hinders us from pleasing the Lord.
- 46:01And that's why the Christian life is marked not by
- 46:05perfection, but by progression. Are we moving on toward maturity
- 46:10in Christ? Are we further along in our walk
- 46:13with the Lord now than we were yesterday and last week and last
- 46:16month and last year? That's the question that needs
- 46:19to be asked and answered #7 you. Please the Lord when you neglect
- 46:32not to share with others. Neglecting not to share with
- 46:38others. Had to have an N word there
- 46:40because I'm spelling the word pleasing.
- 46:43If you're taking notes, you know that if you're not taking notes,
- 46:47you're not spirit filled anyway. Neglecting not to share with
- 46:55others. Hebrews chapter 13 verse #16 Do
- 47:01not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such
- 47:07sacrifices God is pleased. What sacrifices?
- 47:15I told you on Sunday, I'll reiterate it this Sunday, that
- 47:19we are a priesthood of believers.
- 47:22Priests offer sacrifices. There are three sacrifices that
- 47:27all Christians offer #1 the sacrifice of their person.
- 47:36Romans 12 verse #2 We present our bodies a living sacrifice #2
- 47:47There is the sacrifice of praise, right?
- 47:54That's in verse number 15 or 14. If he was 13.
- 47:59We'll talk talk to you about that in a second.
- 48:02A sacrifice of praise. So there's a sacrifice of my
- 48:05person. There's a sacrifice of my
- 48:08praise. Are you ready for the next one?
- 48:12There's a sacrifice of my purse, my money, my goods, right?
- 48:24You can say it this way, the sacrifice of myself, the
- 48:29sacrifice of my song, the sacrifice of my substance,
- 48:36whatever words you want to use. There are three sacrifices that
- 48:39every Christian offers as a priest of the believers, and it
- 48:44becomes the sacrifice of my substance.
- 48:47I'm not going to neglect others by hoarding everything for
- 48:51myself. There are people that are in
- 48:54need and therefore I'm going to offer up a sacrifice to those
- 48:58who are in need of my substance to help them in their time of
- 49:02need, to move them on to maturity in Christ to help them
- 49:06understand that I, I love not just in Word and in tongue, but
- 49:12in deed and in truth, as John says in first John chapter 3.
- 49:17That's why Matthew 25 is so important, right at the, at the
- 49:21judgement of the sheep and the goats at the at the end of the
- 49:24tribulation in the Jezreel and in the the Kidzman Valley, right
- 49:31that there is this great judgement where the sheep are on
- 49:33the right and the goats are on the left, right.
- 49:36And the Lord says to the sheep, when I was hungry, you fed me.
- 49:40When I was thirsty, you gave me something to drink.
- 49:43When I was naked, you clothed me.
- 49:44When I was in prison, you visited me.
- 49:48And the sheep will say, When did we see you hungry?
- 49:53When did we see you thirsty? The sheep are perplexed.
- 49:58When, when were you in prison that we visited you?
- 50:03When were you naked that we clothed you?
- 50:06And Jesus says these words, when you did it to the least of
- 50:10these, my brethren, you did it as unto me.
- 50:17It's it's a remarkable judgement.
- 50:20Why? Because you see, the direct
- 50:23opposite happens with the goats. When Christ says when I was
- 50:28hungry, you didn't feed me. When I was in prison, you didn't
- 50:31visit me. When I was hungry or thirsty,
- 50:33you didn't give me something to drink.
- 50:35And when I was naked, you didn't clothe me.
- 50:36And the goats say the same thing.
- 50:39When did we see you naked, hungry or thirsty in prison?
- 50:45Christ responds when you didn't do it to the least of these my
- 50:50brethren, you didn't do it as unto me.
- 50:55You see, both were perplexed. But you see, the sheep did it
- 51:01and the goats did not Why? Because inherit.
- 51:08Inherent in your DNA as a Christian is the desire to do
- 51:13that which is pleasing to the Lord.
- 51:17You don't neglect to do good to those who are in need.
- 51:21And so when there was a need for someone who was thirsty, they
- 51:23gave him something to drink. When there was a need for
- 51:26someone who was hungry, they fed them.
- 51:28When there was a need to visit someone in prison, they visited
- 51:30them. When there was a need to close
- 51:33someone, they clothed them. And you know what?
- 51:38They did it simply because it was part of their spiritual DNA.
- 51:44They weren't doing it for recognition, they weren't doing
- 51:47it for a crown. They weren't doing it so that at
- 51:51the sheep goat judgement they would be rewarded.
- 51:54No, they did it simply because it was part of their nature.
- 52:01So Paul, the right of Hebrews, it might be Paul, I don't know,
- 52:06but the right of Hebrews says do not neglect in sharing with
- 52:11those who are in need, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
- 52:17Neglecting not to share with others is pleasing to the Lord.
- 52:22You ever notice that sometimes we can hoard that which is ours
- 52:29and not be willing to share it with those who are in need?
- 52:33And that's just pleasing to the Lord, especially when it's in
- 52:38your power to do that which is good.
- 52:41And lastly, pleasing God comes when you give praise in His
- 52:46name. That's the earlier verse in
- 52:49Hebrews chapter 13. Through him then let us
- 52:53continually OfferUp a sacrifice of praise to God.
- 52:57That is the fruit of lips that give thanks to his name.
- 53:03Do you know that you please God when you OfferUp a sacrifice of
- 53:06praise? When you when you get to a place
- 53:09where where you don't want to praise and sing to God and thank
- 53:16Him, but you do anyway? That's a sacrifice that brings
- 53:24pleasure to God and don't you want to please him?
- 53:31Of course you do. I love what the psalmist said in
- 53:37Psalm 69 when he said these words.
- 53:44Psalm 69, verse #30 I will praise the name of God with Saul
- 53:53and magnify him with Thanksgiving, and it will please
- 53:59the Lord better than an ox or a young bull with horns and hoofs.
- 54:09There's one thing that will please God more than anything,
- 54:13that's offering a song of praise in His name simply because of
- 54:19who He is. So I spelled out the word
- 54:27pleasing and gave you 8 principles that if you follow,
- 54:35the Lord is pleased. This is our devotion, the
- 54:40Christian's devotion. As the apostle Paul said, this
- 54:44is my ambition. This is my soul desire.
- 54:49This is my driving passion. This is what I'm devoted to.
- 54:56I'm going to please my God. How about you?
- 55:01I would trust that that's your prayer this evening.
- 55:05Let's pray together. Father, we thank you, Lord, for
- 55:08the word of God. We thank you, Lord, for the fact
- 55:11that you spell out what it means to be pleasing to you.
- 55:15Our prayer is that that's exactly what we would do, that
- 55:19truly our our efforts would be toward you.
- 55:24Forgive us, Lord, for always seeking to pleasure ourselves.
- 55:30We, we do love ourselves more than we ever should.
- 55:35We do love pleasure more than we ever should.
- 55:40We should totally love God. Be devoted to you.
- 55:45Our prayer, Lord, is that we would be so devoted to you that
- 55:50everything else pales in comparison to the glory of our
- 55:52God. That we would exalt your name.
- 55:55That we would abstain from sexual sin.
- 55:59That we live a life of faith, trusting obedience in our God.
- 56:04That truly we would do good to others, help them in their time
- 56:07of need. That we give praise to your
- 56:09glorious name. That when we lack wisdom, we'd
- 56:14ask for wisdom to the God who gives to all men generously.
- 56:22And that we'd always proclaim the message of the cross.
- 56:27For it's that message that's the power of God and to salvation
- 56:32for all men. We ask us in Jesus name, Amen.
