Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: But I invited you here. I thought I made myself
- 0:14Speaker 1: perfectly clear. When you're a guest to my home, you
- 0:21Speaker 1: gotta come to me empty. And I said, no, guess
- 0:27Speaker 1: you're presences presents enough. I already had too much stuff.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So how do you dare to surbey me?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Welcome to I said, no. Gift temperature wineger. I can
- 0:54Speaker 2: type seventy words per minute, and I'm proficient in nothing.
- 1:00Speaker 2: What's going on? What's happening? Well, you know, I thought
- 1:02Speaker 2: the podcast was recording about four hours ago, so I
- 1:05Speaker 2: left the house very early. Thank god I didn't get here.
- 1:08Speaker 2: I was able to turn around in time and then
- 1:11Speaker 2: just wasted several hours because I had planned nothing.
- 1:15Speaker 3: What you do, Matt? Save it for the podcast? Sorry?
- 1:18Speaker 2: Sorry, it's a guest is very rude this morning.
- 1:22Speaker 3: I know, I know, I'm just I'm on tenter hooks.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I want to know so much.
- 1:27Speaker 2: This is a mystery for you that you're going to
- 1:28Speaker 2: find out very soon.
- 1:30Speaker 3: I could now, listener.
- 1:32Speaker 2: Can you imagine? Can you imagine this is a professional.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Well, it'll you see what I brought a gift?
- 1:42Speaker 2: What's going on? I showed up to the office. They
- 1:44Speaker 2: were having a cookie swap party, without me. I was
- 1:47Speaker 2: not told about this, but jokes on them. I think
- 1:49Speaker 2: cookie parties are a bad concept. I think it's a
- 1:54Speaker 2: flawed idea. You can't eat that many cookies, and if
- 1:56Speaker 2: you try a bunch at the same time, the flavor
- 1:58Speaker 2: gets all mushed in your mouth, and then if you're
- 2:00Speaker 2: taking them home, they're getting old. No one is getting
- 2:03Speaker 2: a cookie at its best. The only cookie you're enjoying
- 2:05Speaker 2: is the first one you try there. But the unfortunate
- 2:08Speaker 2: thing is what if it came from someone who's not
- 2:10Speaker 2: good at baking, then your whole party has been ruined.
- 2:13Speaker 2: It's I understand the in theory. Sure, I've never been
- 2:17Speaker 2: to a good one, and I'm sure everyone at the
- 2:19Speaker 2: office is having a bad one right now.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Okay, well, the guest is here. Oh no, I'm not talking.
- 2:27Speaker 3: Oh no, fool me.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Wise, No, I'm very I'm absolutely thrilled about today's guest.
- 2:34Speaker 2: It's Matt Gorley. Matt, I mean welcome.
- 2:38Speaker 3: That didn't seem sincere though welcome. I've already outstayed my
- 2:42Speaker 3: welcome by starting too early.
- 2:43Speaker 2: I know I should have just shut down the recording.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Found another guest, found somebody out in the office to
- 2:48Speaker 2: come talk to me.
- 2:49Speaker 3: I wouldn't blame me. It's cookie day. It's cookie day.
- 2:52Speaker 3: People are very excited. I hear there's the Tom Cruise
- 2:54Speaker 3: cake in the building. Is that true? That's what Patrick
- 2:56Speaker 3: told me.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Have you tried it?
- 2:57Speaker 3: I have.
- 2:58Speaker 2: I've had one too, which is actually from this Can
- 3:00Speaker 2: we really?
- 3:01Speaker 3: Can we speak frankly?
- 3:02Speaker 2: I would love nothing more. I think everyone at this
- 3:05Speaker 2: point should speak frankly with anything to do with Tom Cruise.
- 3:08Speaker 3: That's fair. It's not going to get back to him, right,
- 3:10Speaker 3: He's probably the most insulated person in the world.
- 3:13Speaker 2: I'm only going to have him for a couple more decades.
- 3:16Speaker 3: Yeah, let's enjoy. Okay, what do you know? What did
- 3:21Speaker 3: you think?
- 3:22Speaker 2: I thought it was pretty good. Yeah, you know, the
- 3:25Speaker 2: hype it's crazy. White chocolate is a lot for me.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Me too.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I need something to cut that.
- 3:31Speaker 3: And it ain't coconut.
- 3:32Speaker 2: No, it's certainly not coconut or vanilla cake. Yeah, but
- 3:36Speaker 2: I did enjoy it despite all of that. But it
- 3:38Speaker 2: felt like something that I needed, like a pot of coffee,
- 3:40Speaker 2: black coffee, to eat it with, to drink.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 3:44Speaker 2: So when did you have it? Was it from Tom?
- 3:46Speaker 3: It was from Tom Cruise?
- 3:48Speaker 2: H So that's really cold.
- 3:49Speaker 3: But it wasn't to me obviously yet you might be
- 3:53Speaker 3: on the list. See, well, we'll see it doesn't come yet.
- 3:56Speaker 3: But I felt like you could taste the hype and
- 4:01Speaker 3: like the ingredients you just mentioned, you needed a little
- 4:04Speaker 3: black coffee with the hype as well.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I guess he's probably someone who doesn't
- 4:09Speaker 2: eat a lot of sweets.
- 4:10Speaker 3: No, I don't think he ever does.
- 4:11Speaker 2: So I imagined the first time he tried it, it was
- 4:13Speaker 2: probably so exciting to try something sweet, and so it
- 4:15Speaker 2: didn't really matter what it was.
- 4:17Speaker 3: And he had like a not even he had a
- 4:19Speaker 3: little thimble right exactly, just of it reduced down to
- 4:23Speaker 3: like a paste.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Yeah, if he had like had a lick of a
- 4:25Speaker 2: tootsy pop, he would have had the same reaction and
- 4:28Speaker 2: everyone would be getting the Tom Cruise Tootsy Pop every year.
- 4:31Speaker 2: So but God blessed me he's keeping this bakery in business.
- 4:35Speaker 2: And it was not a bad cake. I'll say that
- 4:37Speaker 2: it was. It was especially if you like very sweet things,
- 4:41Speaker 2: which most people do, because most people have bad taste. Yeah,
- 4:44Speaker 2: and again the bakery is wonderful and the cake is
- 4:46Speaker 2: not bad.
- 4:47Speaker 3: But well, I like where this's going. Because you and
- 4:49Speaker 3: I seem to feel the same about this cake, which
- 4:51Speaker 3: implies that we both have good taste. I'm gonna.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Okay you and I out of this whole office. I'll say,
- 4:58Speaker 2: right now, everyone should just leave the building.
- 5:00Speaker 3: And you're not talking about just the studio that no
- 5:02Speaker 3: one else is in. You, you and you.
- 5:07Speaker 2: I'm pointing to no one right now. Listener YouTube. A
- 5:10Speaker 2: listener watcher is getting a real treat with me pointing
- 5:13Speaker 2: at nothing right now. They're they're out of their mind
- 5:16Speaker 2: excited about this. But what sort of treat are you into?
- 5:21Speaker 3: Well, my favorite is a kind of like coffee. Oh,
- 5:26Speaker 3: a rich like toffee chocolate. But oh, you know what,
- 5:29Speaker 3: there's these milk chocolate covered honeycombs at this little bakery
- 5:33Speaker 3: and Pasadena called Little Flour. Oh, I like this.
- 5:36Speaker 2: I've seen Little Flour and it's always kind of difficult
- 5:40Speaker 2: to access. I see it off the side of the
- 5:41Speaker 2: freeway and think, well, I would love to go there,
- 5:43Speaker 2: but I'm never on that frontage.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like if you're trying to get to an
- 5:46Speaker 3: in and out, you always go the next one, the
- 5:47Speaker 3: next run. There's no other Little Flour. Yes, you gotta
- 5:51Speaker 3: just plant it.
- 5:51Speaker 2: But it's like a honeycomb.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, but like it's like a it's not a hard honeycomb,
- 5:58Speaker 3: but it's not soft. It's kind of just brittle and
- 6:00Speaker 3: light and fluff.
- 6:01Speaker 2: I think I grew up knowing that as sea foam.
- 6:03Speaker 2: They would call it sea foam, which what is that?
- 6:07Speaker 2: Just maybe just a Utah thing?
- 6:09Speaker 3: But because you guys had no sea, Yeah, we were
- 6:11Speaker 3: desperate naming everything. See names most of the things I
- 6:15Speaker 3: know as seafoam. Even your name is kind of like
- 6:19Speaker 3: over water.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Right, and it's a desert. We just have a dead sea,
- 6:23Speaker 2: that's right. That's essentially all the water in Utah than
- 6:25Speaker 2: one piddly little river. So we're desperate for liquid for hydration. Seafoam.
- 6:31Speaker 2: But I love that kind of candy. I never have it.
- 6:33Speaker 2: It really buries itself in your molar.
- 6:35Speaker 3: It does. It's there. Well, that's a blessing in a
- 6:37Speaker 3: curse because a couple of days later lit like a
- 6:41Speaker 3: little after taste, but like we well after taste right way,
- 6:45Speaker 3: wait decades.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I brush my teeth once a month, so okay, No,
- 6:51Speaker 2: I love that sort of thing, and I love a toffee,
- 6:53Speaker 2: but toffee can go weirdly wrong.
- 6:55Speaker 3: You mean like if it's it goes bad for you.
- 6:57Speaker 2: No, just like if somebody made it poorly. Yeah. I
- 7:00Speaker 2: was in Palm Springs recently and I won't name the business.
- 7:02Speaker 3: Was last weekend this past week following me and wait,
- 7:05Speaker 3: what part of Utah are you from?
- 7:07Speaker 2: Right outside of Salt Lake City, It's called South Jordan.
- 7:10Speaker 3: My parents lived in Saint George. Oh you're kidding.
- 7:12Speaker 2: No, Saint George's kind of Utah's Florida. Yeah, it's kind
- 7:17Speaker 2: of the vacation spot of Utah.
- 7:19Speaker 3: That sounds a lot like my ferret.
- 7:21Speaker 2: It's also home to a lot of polygamists.
- 7:23Speaker 3: Yeah, that's not my parents. Well they could be. It
- 7:26Speaker 3: could be.
- 7:27Speaker 2: We would go to Utah as our little like getaway
- 7:30Speaker 2: when I was growing up, about five hours south of Okay.
- 7:33Speaker 3: Have you spent much time there in Saint George of Fairmount.
- 7:35Speaker 3: I've never been to Salt Lake. Interesting. Yeah, But because
- 7:38Speaker 3: they only lived there for about ten years.
- 7:40Speaker 2: How did they end up in Saint George.
- 7:41Speaker 3: I am still asking that question. I think my stepmom
- 7:46Speaker 3: followed some friends there on a whim and then they
- 7:51Speaker 3: got out just as quick. Now they're in Maryland. Oh.
- 7:53Speaker 2: Interesting, what a swing to Wow, I can't.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Account for any of this, it's just trust me. Wait,
- 7:59Speaker 3: where did you grow up? Whittier, California? What is happening
- 8:02Speaker 3: in the family on the run from something?
- 8:05Speaker 2: They are because the rest of my family is all stuck.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I feel like you start here, you stay here.
- 8:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 8:11Speaker 2: I love being in southern California.
- 8:13Speaker 3: I do too. So did the beach Boys? Yeah? I
- 8:16Speaker 3: know beach boys.
- 8:17Speaker 2: They're not from whitty or they're from.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Well, the little old ladies from Pasadena. That's all I
- 8:22Speaker 3: could say, which is where I live now. They're from Hawthorne, Hawthorn.
- 8:26Speaker 3: There we go. How are you going?
- 8:27Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 8:28Speaker 3: Is Hawthorne? That's close to close, sish to Whittier kind of.
- 8:32Speaker 2: I just assume anything outside of La Proper is just
- 8:35Speaker 2: right next to each other, just in a line.
- 8:37Speaker 3: It's everything outside of LA is like forty five minutes away,
- 8:40Speaker 3: right circle.
- 8:41Speaker 2: Within LA everything's twenty minutes and then forty five minutes.
- 8:44Speaker 2: There really no other time spent or an hour and
- 8:47Speaker 2: a half from five to seven pm.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Yes, yes, at least.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Wow, Saint George, that's so fascinating. And what was I
- 8:56Speaker 2: what point was I trying to make you didn't want
- 8:59Speaker 2: me to get to I know, why is it sensitive
- 9:01Speaker 2: for you?
- 9:01Speaker 3: Was I so scared of you?
- 9:04Speaker 2: What were you doing there?
- 9:06Speaker 3: When is this going out?
- 9:07Speaker 2: This is going out January twenty twenty six.
- 9:10Speaker 3: Okay, in the future. So my wife and I are
- 9:12Speaker 3: expecting a child in January. So we went on a
- 9:15Speaker 3: baby moon slash our friend's fiftieth birthday party. Two very
- 9:20Speaker 3: different life events.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, what was the How did you celebrate both
- 9:25Speaker 2: of those?
- 9:26Speaker 3: Well, we went to just a kind of bootique hotel
- 9:30Speaker 3: getaway that if we're speaking taste, what's the hotel it's called?
- 9:34Speaker 3: Like I could barely even pronounce it. Oh, Cracorea pension.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Oh, this is kind of the Mediterranean one. Yeah, I've
- 9:40Speaker 2: never been to that. Yeah, I go to Sparrow's Lodge.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I'll try that next, Spara's Lodge if you can get
- 9:45Speaker 2: a deal. It's the best place in the world.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Why is it the best Because this place you couldn't
- 9:50Speaker 3: get a working bathtub for a pregnant lady to save
- 9:52Speaker 3: your life. And that's after multiple talks.
- 9:55Speaker 4: No, this whole thing was.
- 9:57Speaker 3: Supposed to be a comfort trip for her and alle.
- 9:59Speaker 2: No are they reimbursing you?
- 10:02Speaker 3: Listen, I really struggle with when I should complain and
- 10:06Speaker 3: when I shouldn't. Sometimes it's good. Then maybe you could
- 10:09Speaker 3: handle this for me.
- 10:10Speaker 2: I got some bank fees reversed this morning. I'm happy
- 10:13Speaker 2: to get in touch too. Today it was very easy.
- 10:16Speaker 2: It was just very nice.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Well we had four three hours.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, there's your answer. We got to the answer
- 10:21Speaker 2: in a very roundabout way. I noticed five fees that
- 10:25Speaker 2: they had snuck in. I called the lady.
- 10:27Speaker 3: Was very nice.
- 10:28Speaker 2: I think at this point everyone's not on the side
- 10:30Speaker 2: of the banks, even their employees there.
- 10:33Speaker 3: What bank was this.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Well, I don't want to say, because then what if
- 10:36Speaker 2: somebody up top gets in touch.
- 10:38Speaker 3: Do you want to slam Tom cruise to no end?
- 10:41Speaker 2: And I want that it was Chase Bank. Okay, the
- 10:45Speaker 2: corporates don't want them figuring out that this woman reversed
- 10:48Speaker 2: all of my fees. Is she in danger now? I
- 10:50Speaker 2: didn't take the survey after the call.
- 10:52Speaker 3: Oh my god, we got to get her out of here.
- 10:53Speaker 2: I should have taken the survey and given her a
- 10:55Speaker 2: five star. It's all a disaster. But you went to
- 10:58Speaker 2: this place. It wouldn't bath wasn't like the faucet wasn't working.
- 11:02Speaker 2: Or was there.
- 11:02Speaker 3: They literally like, you know how there's a stopper. These
- 11:05Speaker 3: are old bathtubs, so they just had this aftermarket stopper
- 11:08Speaker 3: that was nowhere near close to ever. It was just
- 11:13Speaker 3: folly that someone would even think a that this would
- 11:17Speaker 3: work or fool someone. It just couldn't hold water, uh huh.
- 11:21Speaker 3: So then they put us in a room with a
- 11:23Speaker 3: sunken stone bathtub. Oh I like that, but their stopper
- 11:26Speaker 3: was one of those suction cup ones. But you can't
- 11:30Speaker 3: suction on flagstone with like ground, right, And it took
- 11:35Speaker 3: so long. But by the time there was three inches
- 11:37Speaker 3: of water in the bathtub, it was freezing cold. And
- 11:40Speaker 3: this was after my poor wife, who's you know that
- 11:43Speaker 3: hasn't had the easiest pregnancy. Sure, all she wanted was
- 11:46Speaker 3: just some book time and some bathtime. Yeah, that's what
- 11:48Speaker 3: you do on a vacation.
- 11:49Speaker 2: I know you've got to complain or I'll write. I'm
- 11:51Speaker 2: willing to write whatever thing I need to email, Yelp review,
- 11:54Speaker 2: Google Review, trip Advisor. I'll get in there and burn
- 11:58Speaker 2: this place down.
- 11:59Speaker 3: Because I I was caught between a rock and a
- 12:01Speaker 3: hard place, wanting to take care of this for her,
- 12:03Speaker 3: her also going I don't want the stress. I don't
- 12:05Speaker 3: want to do with this, so I just had to. Yeah,
- 12:07Speaker 3: there's no winning there.
- 12:08Speaker 2: If you had been at Sparrow's Lodge, you would have
- 12:10Speaker 2: had a working bath and shower.
- 12:13Speaker 3: Is have I been there? Is that the like? Are
- 12:15Speaker 3: they green bungalows?
- 12:17Speaker 2: No, it's it's like an old ranch that's been retro fitted.
- 12:22Speaker 2: I'm trying to think. I think that they're a dark
- 12:24Speaker 2: red color. So now you were really challenging my memory
- 12:27Speaker 2: that I can't remember that.
- 12:28Speaker 3: But I wouldn't trust me for that kind of thing.
- 12:31Speaker 3: What color?
- 12:32Speaker 2: Oh color, it's a hard one, it is. I think
- 12:33Speaker 2: that's why they kind of talk about like why no
- 12:35Speaker 2: one could be an eyewitness to anything.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it's very trustworthy. You don't remember anything that has
- 12:40Speaker 3: happened in the past. Let me ask you this one
- 12:42Speaker 3: thing I do remember about the place that I think
- 12:43Speaker 3: is Sparrow's Lodge, the adjoining walls on the rooms, but
- 12:48Speaker 3: there's like a space on the bottom of the walls
- 12:51Speaker 3: about three inches of just hair.
- 12:53Speaker 2: Did you stay in a truck stop bathroom?
- 12:56Speaker 3: Yes, but that wasn't this what.
- 12:59Speaker 2: You've stayed in a place where the hotel rooms have
- 13:02Speaker 2: a space under.
- 13:03Speaker 3: The floor somewhere glamping and like safe house. I don't know.
- 13:11Speaker 2: This is not the okay, I keep you can't go
- 13:14Speaker 2: back to wherever that is.
- 13:15Speaker 3: Go on, I won't go on. This has a big
- 13:17Speaker 3: like a barn in the middle almost. That does sound familiar.
- 13:21Speaker 2: And it's very quiet.
- 13:22Speaker 3: Would they not let you play music or like talk
- 13:24Speaker 3: to your friends after eight pm? Because that's another thing
- 13:27Speaker 3: that happened at that point. I couldn't talk to my friends.
- 13:32Speaker 2: Were you taking there in a blindfold?
- 13:34Speaker 3: What I'm saying it was for a wedding?
- 13:36Speaker 2: No? This you can talk after eight pm. That's one
- 13:41Speaker 2: of the big selling points of Man.
- 13:43Speaker 3: This is a four stars. The writs you got a pad.
- 13:47Speaker 2: They let you have a s'more, which is wonderful. That
- 13:49Speaker 2: that really gets me.
- 13:50Speaker 3: God, this sounds like wow.
- 13:53Speaker 2: But the space under I mean, that's crazy to me.
- 13:56Speaker 2: That sounds dangerous. It does that sounds did you ever
- 13:59Speaker 2: read I feel like there was like a New Yorker
- 14:00Speaker 2: piece or something about these people that ran a motel
- 14:04Speaker 2: or something in the heads they were spying on everyone
- 14:06Speaker 2: in the rooms. That's all I can tell you.
- 14:09Speaker 3: Okay, but that sounds like that.
- 14:10Speaker 2: It sounds like that.
- 14:11Speaker 3: It sounds situation, a kind of place that you go
- 14:13Speaker 3: because you people are into that, like passing messages under the.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Wall of right, like each other's feet. Yeah, it's the
- 14:20Speaker 2: Wiki feet Hotel. Just the idea.
- 14:22Speaker 3: Actually, yeah, it's not a bad idea.
- 14:24Speaker 2: They need to expand that brand. The wiki Wiki feet
- 14:27Speaker 2: is just a website. Why not turn it into a
- 14:29Speaker 2: whole universe?
- 14:30Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 14:31Speaker 2: Actually, got a book action figures that it's just like
- 14:34Speaker 2: a bland doll and then very specific feet.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Yeah, and footwear and footwear and it's just nothing. You
- 14:42Speaker 3: paid one hundred dollars for a box. Think of that.
- 14:45Speaker 2: I mean, in thirty seconds, we've thought of several new
- 14:48Speaker 2: revenue streams for this company.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:50Speaker 2: Is it a company or is it just one perfect
- 14:51Speaker 2: running a website?
- 14:52Speaker 3: That's a good question. Hmm. I feel like it's now
- 14:56Speaker 3: like a colloquium of perverts. Oh yeah, she's probably had
- 14:59Speaker 3: to bring on like sub perverts.
- 15:01Speaker 2: To run and cool the servers.
- 15:03Speaker 3: And why did I say he? It could easily be
- 15:07Speaker 3: a woman.
- 15:07Speaker 2: It could be in anything. It's a it could be
- 15:10Speaker 2: an animal.
- 15:11Speaker 3: I don't know. It's an animal. It's an animal for feet.
- 15:16Speaker 2: Wow, So you were in Palm Springs and what happened
- 15:18Speaker 2: with the fiftieth birthday that was very nice.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Our lovely friend CC and of friends, we all went
- 15:23Speaker 3: to dinner. They had a whole weekend. We just stopped
- 15:25Speaker 3: in for the dinner because we had already had this
- 15:27Speaker 3: baby moon plane.
- 15:28Speaker 2: Right right, my boyfriend's about to turn fifty and it's
- 15:33Speaker 2: either zero or one thousand for him. And I'm like,
- 15:36Speaker 2: can you modulate the event because one of these things
- 15:40Speaker 2: will cost beyond and then the other thing is us
- 15:43Speaker 2: just being mad at each other alone at dinner. So
- 15:46Speaker 2: maybe find a group of friends that want to do
- 15:48Speaker 2: something within the United States. It's I don't I.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Think at any cost avoiding mad at dinner having been there.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, yeah every other night.
- 15:59Speaker 3: Yeah, this is what we're in for. I guess this
- 16:02Speaker 3: is what we did. And I don't mean just you
- 16:04Speaker 3: and me in our respective relationships, our partners as well.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Oh of course that's what you just sign on.
- 16:09Speaker 2: Birthdays are hard to I think there's a lot of
- 16:12Speaker 2: unnecessary pressure. And I'm not somebody who really does celebrations,
- 16:16Speaker 2: and neither is he, but especially for a milestone event,
- 16:18Speaker 2: it feels like you have to do something. But when
- 16:20Speaker 2: you never do anything. I guess it is kind of
- 16:23Speaker 2: hard to figure out what speed you should be going
- 16:25Speaker 2: at for that song.
- 16:26Speaker 3: And I think it's hard for the partner of the
- 16:28Speaker 3: person having the birthday because, like you said, you can't
- 16:31Speaker 3: quite gauge what.
- 16:32Speaker 2: He might want right exactly, because he the ideas he's
- 16:37Speaker 2: given are nothing, or go to Vietnam, not in a war.
- 16:44Speaker 3: To the oh, get enlisted. Wow, that's see, that's interesting.
- 16:49Speaker 3: So where are you leaning?
- 16:51Speaker 2: I was like, well, maybe we could go on a
- 16:52Speaker 2: little trip within the continental United States, I mean, as
- 16:55Speaker 2: birthdays in January, so it like kind of limits pleasant
- 16:57Speaker 2: places to go unless you want snow weather. But neither
- 17:00Speaker 2: of us wants anything to do with that, so that
- 17:02Speaker 2: starts to narrow it down. And then I, well, are
- 17:06Speaker 2: we just headed towards Palm Springs?
- 17:07Speaker 3: Which I think is a great idea. Back to the
- 17:09Speaker 3: Sparrow's life, back.
- 17:10Speaker 2: To the Sparrow's ladge. That's where I'd like to have
- 17:12Speaker 2: my fiftieth birthday. Maybe I can convince him.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I don't know. Yeah, what have you have You ever
- 17:17Speaker 3: had a big birthday celebration? Yeah, my fiftieth two years ago.
- 17:20Speaker 3: Oh you're kidding, what did you do? I just we
- 17:24Speaker 3: just got a room or like the patio area of
- 17:27Speaker 3: the Raymond Restaurant in Pasadena, and I had a smallish
- 17:31Speaker 3: group of people for dinner.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Okay, see that seems like a reasonable adult's fiftieth birthday party.
- 17:37Speaker 3: It was nice. It was nice. I couldn't complain. Yeah,
- 17:40Speaker 3: it was that. You know, you're picking. It's not a party,
- 17:43Speaker 3: so you've got your close people.
- 17:44Speaker 2: There, normal conversation being had.
- 17:47Speaker 3: The only not a complaint, The only regret I have
- 17:50Speaker 3: is just the layout of the table was such where
- 17:52Speaker 3: I couldn't I kind of got to talk to five
- 17:55Speaker 3: people and there were probably another ten or fifteen that
- 17:58Speaker 3: I never really got to speak to.
- 17:59Speaker 2: Right, That's kind of the folly of every birthday party,
- 18:03Speaker 2: which is that you really don't get to spend any
- 18:05Speaker 2: time with anyone. Yeah, you just get to say hello
- 18:08Speaker 2: and catch up briefly and then have to move on.
- 18:11Speaker 3: I always just.
- 18:11Speaker 2: Leave my own party. Is feeling guilty that I didn't
- 18:14Speaker 2: spend time on other people?
- 18:15Speaker 3: I do too.
- 18:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 18:17Speaker 3: Maybe I'm just not the person for this sort of thing.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Do you like having birthday parties or do you like
- 18:22Speaker 3: to keep it simple?
- 18:23Speaker 2: I don't know. I had three in a row. This year,
- 18:24Speaker 2: I did not have one for the other three were wonderful.
- 18:27Speaker 2: I said some very hard guidelines. I send an email
- 18:30Speaker 2: with rules that the party will end at eleven PM,
- 18:32Speaker 2: and I will ask people to leave, and I make
- 18:36Speaker 2: it very clear what I want out of the party.
- 18:37Speaker 2: And for the most part, is a nice time. But
- 18:41Speaker 2: the problem is I don't get to talk to people
- 18:43Speaker 2: that much. So it's just I don't like hosting people.
- 18:46Speaker 2: I'd rather be well, I don't even know if i'd
- 18:48Speaker 2: want to be a guest, So I guess the short answers, No,
- 18:51Speaker 2: I don't like to.
- 18:52Speaker 3: Have a party. You like them in theory. I like
- 18:54Speaker 3: them in theory, and often in practice you ask yourself,
- 18:57Speaker 3: how did I get here? How did my life come
- 18:59Speaker 3: to this? Ya?
- 19:00Speaker 2: I almost feel like I would like to send out
- 19:02Speaker 2: a mass email that says, everyone respond to me. I
- 19:05Speaker 2: want to see each of you individually, take me out
- 19:07Speaker 2: to dinner. But then you wonder, Then there's that worry.
- 19:10Speaker 2: What if people don't respond and suddenly you're you're the
- 19:13Speaker 2: feeling of isolation.
- 19:15Speaker 3: Yeah, and then if you're on your thirteenth dinner in
- 19:17Speaker 3: a row.
- 19:17Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, Then that's also ruining your life. I don't
- 19:21Speaker 2: know if there's any winning. I forget and this is rough.
- 19:25Speaker 2: I don't know, speaking of you know, bad things, things
- 19:29Speaker 2: I'm not comfortable with. Yeah, Matt, I was excited to
- 19:32Speaker 2: have you here today on the podcast.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Understand.
- 19:34Speaker 2: I thought, Matt will come over, we'll have a nice time,
- 19:37Speaker 2: he won't interrupt the intro.
- 19:40Speaker 3: We'll just be civil with each.
- 19:41Speaker 2: Other and try to start the year off right. So
- 19:46Speaker 2: I was a little surprised when I walked in and
- 19:49Speaker 2: saw you holding what is from where I'm sitting, clearly
- 19:53Speaker 2: a gift podcast is called. I said, no gifts. Yeah,
- 19:59Speaker 2: don't you have anything to say about this.
- 20:01Speaker 3: I just want you to know that going into this,
- 20:04Speaker 3: I know I was breaking the code.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Okay, so just right off the badge.
- 20:08Speaker 3: And it's not like I didn't struggle with it now.
- 20:10Speaker 3: In fact, I think I tailored the gift as a
- 20:13Speaker 3: kind of acknowledgment to interesting Oh yeah, And I felt
- 20:18Speaker 3: like the only way to do this is to hedge
- 20:20Speaker 3: my bets. I have to give you a gift, okay,
- 20:22Speaker 3: regardless of how no other guest in the history of
- 20:24Speaker 3: the podcast has ever given you a gift. I want
- 20:26Speaker 3: to be the first to just break that rule. And
- 20:29Speaker 3: so I made use some things that you can use
- 20:32Speaker 3: for me or for future guests that bring you gifts.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Oh wonderful. Okay, well I'm glad to hear it was
- 20:37Speaker 2: hard for you.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Yeah, it was hard. Okay, it still is hard.
- 20:43Speaker 2: It's in this wonderful little plaid red and black bag.
- 20:47Speaker 3: You can use that as a little belt satchel. Yes, okay,
- 20:51Speaker 3: well open it? Oh wait did you make these? I
- 20:55Speaker 3: made you some no thank you cards?
- 20:57Speaker 2: Eight no thank you cards and they look like real cars.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Well should open? Yeah, sure, go for it. What is this?
- 21:03Speaker 3: Is this elastic? That's my daughter's jewelry bead elastic? Oh?
- 21:08Speaker 3: I like this.
- 21:08Speaker 2: I've never seen something like that before, kind of a
- 21:10Speaker 2: rainbow elastic.
- 21:12Speaker 3: I need that back.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Of course, this is this literally costs you a port.
- 21:16Speaker 3: That's the real gift.
- 21:18Speaker 2: This is a family heirloom. I wouldn't want to keep
- 21:21Speaker 2: that of course. These okay, so this first one says
- 21:23Speaker 2: you have deliberately disobeyed me, and it says my name
- 21:25Speaker 2: on the front.
- 21:26Speaker 3: This is great.
- 21:28Speaker 2: And then real friends don't give gifts you did you
- 21:34Speaker 2: handwrite all of that?
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 21:36Speaker 2: This is like genuinely nice and different types of styles
- 21:40Speaker 2: of handwriting fonts. I guess is it a font when
- 21:43Speaker 2: you write it with your hand?
- 21:45Speaker 3: That's a good question. M No. I think the font
- 21:48Speaker 3: is the size all right, and it's a type face
- 21:51Speaker 3: type face, so I can't be a t it's a
- 21:54Speaker 3: hand face.
- 21:55Speaker 2: It's a hand face, a handwriting, A handwriting to you,
- 21:59Speaker 2: I say, boo hiss, I said no gifts. This is gorgeous. Thanks,
- 22:04Speaker 2: but no thanks because I said no gift.
- 22:06Speaker 3: How long did this take you? Well, I had a
- 22:08Speaker 3: little time at my daughter's dance class, so I brought this.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You're busy ignoring your daughter's style.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I think this dance class has those kind of mirrors,
- 22:16Speaker 3: like an interrogation room. I can't see in what I
- 22:19Speaker 3: know what I know.
- 22:21Speaker 2: They can see out, but you can't see in. That
- 22:23Speaker 2: feels backward.
- 22:24Speaker 3: It does feel backwards. I don't understand it. This feels
- 22:27Speaker 3: also that we tried to cancel and they won't let
- 22:29Speaker 3: us out, so we have another month, but then we're done.
- 22:32Speaker 3: How long has it been a year? No, it's been
- 22:34Speaker 3: a few months. Oh my god, what a scam. They're
- 22:37Speaker 3: like multi level.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, there's they might not even be dancing in there.
- 22:41Speaker 2: They might just haven't seen it.
- 22:42Speaker 3: Quietly, she comes out in full makeup, like.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Is she uh, what sort of dancing is she learning?
- 22:49Speaker 3: It's tapping jazz? Oh, okay, is that right? No tap
- 22:52Speaker 3: in ballet. I don't know. I can't see it.
- 22:55Speaker 2: I don't know, right, Okay, this is I look, I look,
- 22:59Speaker 2: I said, And then there's a somebody giving the finger
- 23:03Speaker 2: and then inside, oh gifts.
- 23:05Speaker 3: That one's got one inside?
- 23:07Speaker 2: Are you an artist? Draw?
- 23:09Speaker 3: That depends on the day. I think you. Did you
- 23:12Speaker 3: study art in school? I studied, Yeah, I studied. I
- 23:15Speaker 3: went to study art and graphic design, but I was
- 23:18Speaker 3: told by instructor that I was seduced by the line,
- 23:23Speaker 3: so I moved to scenic design. My undergrad degree is
- 23:27Speaker 3: in scenic design. Or seduced by the line. What does
- 23:30Speaker 3: that even mean? I think? To him it was like,
- 23:33Speaker 3: you need more form and shadow and abstract where I
- 23:36Speaker 3: think I'm an illustrator. So that's why I was I
- 23:39Speaker 3: kind of like to you know, like this correct graphic
- 23:42Speaker 3: very right right.
- 23:43Speaker 2: This is to me, you will always be truly inconsiderate,
- 23:48Speaker 2: I said, no, gifts, this is incredible. I'm gonna have
- 23:50Speaker 2: to give these away to guests.
- 23:52Speaker 3: Yeah, that's yeah, you can do that, thank you.
- 23:53Speaker 2: But I said no gifts with a big what do
- 23:56Speaker 2: we call this? I just always say ghostbusters thing.
- 23:59Speaker 3: Yeah, don't don't.
- 24:01Speaker 2: Sign no smoking. But it's over a gift. Gorgeous. Thanks
- 24:07Speaker 2: but dot dot dot you failed. That's a nice I
- 24:12Speaker 2: can save this for all sorts of occasions. Actually, and
- 24:15Speaker 2: then oh and these are all the envelope. This is gorgeous,
- 24:18Speaker 2: absolutely stunning. And you did these while your daughter was learning.
- 24:21Speaker 3: For the most part. Yeah, I think I think. Do
- 24:24Speaker 3: they give you a desk and pens? I was just
- 24:27Speaker 3: doing them on a creaky chair last night.
- 24:31Speaker 2: This all happened last night. Yeah, this would have taken
- 24:34Speaker 2: me months.
- 24:34Speaker 3: No, they're not. Yes, they are.
- 24:39Speaker 2: The listener will see on Instagram or YouTube video. Get
- 24:42Speaker 2: to see it on video. Very exciting that these are
- 24:45Speaker 2: actually like professional level.
- 24:47Speaker 3: That's kind.
- 24:48Speaker 2: But I don't give me a break. Come on, stop fishing.
- 24:52Speaker 3: You already said it. How can I be fishing. I'm
- 24:54Speaker 3: trying to stop it. I'm throwing that fish back in
- 24:56Speaker 3: the ocean. You're looking for more? No, I don't want it.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Go on insatiable.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Okay, So your daughter's learning tap and chance.
- 25:05Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, learning is it was this her idea or
- 25:09Speaker 3: the parent's idea. I think I think she likes dancing,
- 25:15Speaker 3: but it wasn't like she said, what's dance class? And
- 25:17Speaker 3: when can I do it? You know she's four? She's four, Okay.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Does she seem to be enjoying it?
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yes? She does. One of her great friends at school
- 25:25Speaker 3: is there so much so that when the dance class
- 25:27Speaker 3: is over, her father and my and myself, we can't
- 25:30Speaker 3: pull them apart. They're holding to each other, screaming at times.
- 25:34Speaker 3: We had a rough goodbye last night.
- 25:36Speaker 2: What's happening behind that mirror? Get out of this class?
- 25:42Speaker 3: Try trauma? I can't. And it's like the hotel that
- 25:46Speaker 3: we were at. It's just do you engage? Do you fight? When?
- 25:49Speaker 3: Is when I've had to choose my battles in these things.
- 25:51Speaker 2: It seems like you're just gonna roll over every time.
- 25:54Speaker 3: Well I used to be the opposite, but you get
- 25:56Speaker 3: to a place where you like, is it worth it?
- 25:57Speaker 2: Is it worth it just to stand up for myself?
- 26:00Speaker 3: And then I would stand up for myself with trivial things.
- 26:02Speaker 3: Now something as big as a bathtub or a dance class.
- 26:07Speaker 3: This is kind of my problem.
- 26:07Speaker 2: I don't set up for myself often enough, then I
- 26:09Speaker 2: find a situation where I'm like, oh, that's probably not
- 26:12Speaker 2: worth standing up for myself, and then I do, and
- 26:14Speaker 2: then I embarrass I'm embarrassed by it. Never stand up
- 26:18Speaker 2: for myself again.
- 26:18Speaker 3: Basically, I wrestle with it.
- 26:20Speaker 2: How are you as a dancer?
- 26:23Speaker 3: I'm good when I'm prepared to give into it, okay,
- 26:27Speaker 3: but that's not most of the time. Most of the
- 26:30Speaker 3: time I'm self conscious about it, right, But when I
- 26:33Speaker 3: let go and go, I think I can dance in
- 26:36Speaker 3: what sort of situation like a wedding, a fun wedding? Okay, Yeah,
- 26:40Speaker 3: I don't find myself in dancing situations much more than that,
- 26:42Speaker 3: although I dance at home with my daughter and my wife,
- 26:44Speaker 3: like we dance around the house.
- 26:45Speaker 2: You're dancing team, yes, captain captain of course, and please
- 26:50Speaker 2: refer to me from captain dance dance.
- 26:53Speaker 3: What are you dancing to around the house? Oh, you
- 26:56Speaker 3: name it. It's a lot of K pop demon hunters.
- 27:00Speaker 3: I got her onto like a prayer, which she likes. Yeah,
- 27:03Speaker 3: I'm trying to kind of get some things I like
- 27:06Speaker 3: in there, but they're not really taking but a lot
- 27:09Speaker 3: of Disney Okay, sure. Sure.
- 27:11Speaker 2: What was the K Pop Demon Hunter's Journey for you
- 27:14Speaker 2: as a parent?
- 27:14Speaker 3: I brought it home you. I was patient zero.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Wow, I know, fascinating. That is not how I would
- 27:21Speaker 2: have imagined that.
- 27:21Speaker 4: Go.
- 27:22Speaker 3: I don't think it's how it happens most times. But
- 27:24Speaker 3: I had heard about I think most of my podcast
- 27:26Speaker 3: listening is film based, and so I had heard enough
- 27:29Speaker 3: about it. And I was pretty big in anime when
- 27:31Speaker 3: I was younger, okay, okay, and I just know my
- 27:34Speaker 3: daughter's tastes and I was like, she's she's going to
- 27:37Speaker 3: go crazy for this.
- 27:38Speaker 2: So you were an early adopter then, I guess I was.
- 27:41Speaker 2: I don't like it kind of just was suddenly the
- 27:43Speaker 2: biggest thing in the universe. But I don't what did
- 27:47Speaker 2: Netflix like release it and then it quietly started to
- 27:48Speaker 2: become a big thing or was it?
- 27:50Speaker 1: Oh?
- 27:50Speaker 3: Interesting? It was the I think their biggest week after
- 27:54Speaker 3: week growth film they've ever had.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Maybe congratulations to net I know, God, we're rooting for them.
- 28:01Speaker 3: We will. You're gonna be calling them for your bank
- 28:05Speaker 3: fees pretty soon.
- 28:08Speaker 2: Have my Netflix debit card?
- 28:10Speaker 3: Wow.
- 28:11Speaker 2: Wow, So that's a father to daughter interesting?
- 28:14Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 28:14Speaker 2: And how was she immediately into it or was it
- 28:17Speaker 2: something where she had to figure it out? Because to me,
- 28:19Speaker 2: it doesn't make sense for like a child, like it
- 28:21Speaker 2: feels kind of for teens or something.
- 28:23Speaker 3: I think you're right. I don't want to like say
- 28:26Speaker 3: my daughter has advanced tastes. But she likes when people
- 28:31Speaker 3: are scared. She loves when people are in danger, hurt
- 28:36Speaker 3: or scared within the thing, not with, not the viewing part,
- 28:40Speaker 3: not always, not always.
- 28:42Speaker 2: She loves like a good like ouchy story okay, or
- 28:46Speaker 2: fall down story or why did you cry?
- 28:49Speaker 3: So she's cruel, She's just a cruel heart curious. Yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 3: I wouldn't call her cruel, but she's she's experimenting with it.
- 28:57Speaker 2: This is this is a scary person I know.
- 29:01Speaker 3: Is she currently an only child? She is until January
- 29:04Speaker 3: siblings for Room Awakening. Yeah, well she might also be
- 29:08Speaker 3: that's that thing. I mean, our daughter Glenn. She's really incredible.
- 29:14Speaker 3: She's just a whirlwind. She's Tasmanian double right right, And
- 29:18Speaker 3: everybody keeps saying, oh, well you've got that. Now you're
- 29:21Speaker 3: going to have the calm one on the what if
- 29:22Speaker 3: this is the call one?
- 29:23Speaker 2: Oh right, that's always a possibility. Something much worse could
- 29:28Speaker 2: be around the term I see around them. I don't
- 29:31Speaker 2: know what the phrase is, around the band, around the bend,
- 29:35Speaker 2: around around the works. Yeah, it all applies to babies
- 29:38Speaker 2: being born. Yeah, speaking of scary things, I just saw
- 29:45Speaker 2: Paranormal Activity the play about it.
- 29:47Speaker 3: I have heard about this because I teach theater online
- 29:51Speaker 3: and they have to see a play and someone wrote
- 29:53Speaker 3: a critique on this play. What did they have to
- 29:55Speaker 3: say about it? Just that they were pleasantly surprised. They
- 29:58Speaker 3: never thought it could be as good as one of
- 29:59Speaker 3: them movies, and they liked it. I was shocked.
- 30:02Speaker 2: I really expected a tacky time and it wasn't. I
- 30:05Speaker 2: don't see enough place to really say, but it seemed
- 30:09Speaker 2: done well enough that I wasn't like, well this is
- 30:13Speaker 2: it's embarrassing when I'm here.
- 30:15Speaker 3: It's not campy, it's it's just no, it's very sincere.
- 30:18Speaker 3: It's very it really.
- 30:20Speaker 2: I mean, my complaints would probably be that it just
- 30:22Speaker 2: like in order to build tension. It's just extremely boring
- 30:25Speaker 2: up until the scary part.
- 30:27Speaker 3: Yes, that's their memo.
- 30:28Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like the first half an hour. I was
- 30:31Speaker 2: a little dozing off until the first big scare. Then
- 30:33Speaker 2: I was awake for the rest of the time, and
- 30:35Speaker 2: I'm not easily scared by things. My boyfriend as he
- 30:37Speaker 2: was freaking out, but I at least kind of it
- 30:42Speaker 2: registered for me that it could be scary to other people.
- 30:46Speaker 2: So you have your emotions, might just make it inside,
- 30:50Speaker 2: but you acknowledge the listener knows. I feel nothing. I
- 30:56Speaker 2: have a long history of feeling I absolutely nothing.
- 30:59Speaker 3: I've heard of that for like empathy when people go
- 31:02Speaker 3: through hard time, but for scares, I've never heard of
- 31:05Speaker 3: that kind of lack of empathy for I guess you're
- 31:08Speaker 3: saying you have empathy for scares, but you can't feel
- 31:12Speaker 3: it yourself. Yeah, I guess. Okay, Well that's admirable. Is
- 31:15Speaker 3: that a psychopath? No? No, I think that's the opposite
- 31:18Speaker 3: of a psychopath. You can't help that you're superhuman and
- 31:21Speaker 3: not afraid of anything on this earth.
- 31:22Speaker 2: But I'm a very strong man.
- 31:24Speaker 3: Yes, but that you empathize that weaker people.
- 31:26Speaker 2: Can, right right, Okay, Yes, I'll lead us into whatever
- 31:30Speaker 2: scary thing the world is headed towards because it won't
- 31:33Speaker 2: scare me.
- 31:34Speaker 3: Okay, but it was.
- 31:35Speaker 2: There were some frightening moments there were I tried to
- 31:37Speaker 2: I was like, is this a play or is it
- 31:39Speaker 2: a magic show or some moments where it's like, well,
- 31:41Speaker 2: this is more of an illusion or a magic trick
- 31:44Speaker 2: than a I don't know. It was scary enough. I
- 31:46Speaker 2: didn't expect how like, how could a play possibly scare people?
- 31:50Speaker 3: Right? People were shrieking, the audience shrieking. Were they coming
- 31:54Speaker 3: out in the audience at all? Was there anything nothing
- 31:56Speaker 3: like that at all? Yeah?
- 31:57Speaker 2: I kind of expected something like that, and it was
- 32:00Speaker 2: all on stage, and uh, yeah, I've said this, but
- 32:06Speaker 2: I think the moral of the play was essentially, don't
- 32:07Speaker 2: run anybody over with your car.
- 32:10Speaker 3: That willet.
- 32:12Speaker 2: It's not even morals, that's just put it on your lists,
- 32:18Speaker 2: don't run anyone over. But yeah, do you get scared easily?
- 32:24Speaker 3: I do? Yeah, jump scares. It's not that I'm scared.
- 32:28Speaker 3: I don't get scared, like existentially afraid of that. I
- 32:31Speaker 3: do have plenty of other things in life, but movies,
- 32:34Speaker 3: it's more just when is it coming? When is it coming?
- 32:36Speaker 1: Right?
- 32:36Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess I do get scared.
- 32:38Speaker 2: I feel like people really complain about jump scares and
- 32:41Speaker 2: say they're cheap or whatever, but I feel like that's
- 32:43Speaker 2: kind of the only way you can get me at
- 32:44Speaker 2: this point.
- 32:45Speaker 3: I don't. I think, when done well, they're the best.
- 32:47Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so so much fun. Yeah yeah, but other things, ghosts,
- 32:50Speaker 2: that kind of thing don't really do anything for me either.
- 32:53Speaker 3: I think I'm much more scared of like a slasher film,
- 32:55Speaker 3: because it could really happen exactly than ghost. I like
- 32:59Speaker 3: certain ghost movies. I like to believe for the movie
- 33:01Speaker 3: that it's fun, but I'm not gonna go to bed
- 33:03Speaker 3: worried that, you know, Annabelle's coming or whatever.
- 33:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I love I mean, my number one favorite is
- 33:09Speaker 2: a haunted house movie, but there aren't enough of those. Yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 2: And most of the haunted house movies now take place
- 33:14Speaker 2: in new builds, which I don't like.
- 33:16Speaker 3: All the paranormal. Yeah, it's like talking new builds in
- 33:20Speaker 3: like Corona, California, ex these. Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 2: No, I need some sort of Victorian, some sort of
- 33:26Speaker 2: wind Chester or mystery house vibe.
- 33:28Speaker 3: Do you have a favorite Haunted house movie?
- 33:30Speaker 2: I love The Haunting.
- 33:31Speaker 3: I was just gonna say the Haunting, the original?
- 33:34Speaker 2: What if I loved the ninety nine on that.
- 33:36Speaker 3: Something to be said like a miss fire. I know
- 33:38Speaker 3: it was, it was. I can't even say because we
- 33:41Speaker 3: rented that like three years ago, and I fell Asleep
- 33:44Speaker 3: Pathway Through right, who's in it? It's like Catherine Zada Jones,
- 33:47Speaker 3: Liam Neeson, Ellen Wilson, and Lily what's her name? Lily Taylor? Yeah,
- 33:54Speaker 3: I think so, but not the new Lily Taylor.
- 33:57Speaker 2: Now there's an old Wait what Lily Taylor want point?
- 34:00Speaker 2: Oh Lily Taylor is? I don't know who Lily Taylor
- 34:03Speaker 2: even is? My Lily reach out. My apologies are, but
- 34:06Speaker 2: I don't know this person.
- 34:07Speaker 3: The new is the wait, who's David Harbor's girlfriend that
- 34:11Speaker 3: he cheated on? Lily Allen? Okay, that's Lily Allen is
- 34:14Speaker 3: not in and it must be Lily Taylor. Lily Taylor,
- 34:18Speaker 3: you've probably got it brought up on your screen.
- 34:19Speaker 2: You could say, we're going to guess light you from here.
- 34:23Speaker 2: You're not seeing that whatever your reality is back there
- 34:27Speaker 2: is not true Lily Taylor. Interesting Now, I've I only
- 34:30Speaker 2: ever saw the trailer of it, and I love the
- 34:32Speaker 2: original so much that I thought I'll stay away from
- 34:34Speaker 2: the originally, and I love the book too. Oh I'm
- 34:36Speaker 2: never really spooky, really very spooky, and the original movie
- 34:40Speaker 2: is kind of.
- 34:41Speaker 3: Very I've heard it really holds up and yeah, I've
- 34:44Speaker 3: seen it. But it's been a long time.
- 34:45Speaker 2: Has a lot of loud, the loud pounding noise which
- 34:48Speaker 2: is bright. Oh yeah, that's kind of mysterious coming from nowhere.
- 34:52Speaker 2: But that's probably my number one favorite horror movie. Oh
- 34:54Speaker 2: that the Shining Strangers.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Oh yeah, those are all good. Haunted house, haunted ho tell,
- 35:00Speaker 3: haunted cabin.
- 35:01Speaker 2: But haunted home invasion, yeah, haunted.
- 35:05Speaker 3: Yeah, do you have a favorite? I mean, I have
- 35:09Speaker 3: a long history with Halloween and I love it. Okay,
- 35:12Speaker 3: I hate it. What's this long?
- 35:14Speaker 2: Well, I just was shown it as a small the
- 35:17Speaker 2: movie itself. I thought you're talking about just the holiday
- 35:19Speaker 2: and general.
- 35:20Speaker 3: My babysitter made me watch it when I was young,
- 35:22Speaker 3: and so shaped my life more than I care to admit.
- 35:26Speaker 3: And so I have always had this morbid fascination and
- 35:29Speaker 3: I love it. And then the house is in South Pasadena.
- 35:33Speaker 3: Every year for Halloween we go, rather than visit Santa
- 35:35Speaker 3: Claus at Christmas, we take my daughter to see Michael Myers.
- 35:38Speaker 3: How does she feel about that? Well, it varies from
- 35:41Speaker 3: year to year. This year she did want to go
- 35:43Speaker 3: near it, and we don't force it on her, right,
- 35:44Speaker 3: But it is funny because these are not like professionally
- 35:48Speaker 3: associated Michael Myers's. They're just people dressed up so you'll
- 35:52Speaker 3: get like a tall one, a short one of brand show.
- 35:54Speaker 3: When every variety of Michael Myers you can imagine sex Michael.
- 35:59Speaker 3: They're all there.
- 36:00Speaker 2: Every Michael Myers is a sexy Michael Myers. That's what's
- 36:03Speaker 2: happening under that jumpsuit. They should have a Santa at
- 36:06Speaker 2: that house.
- 36:07Speaker 3: They should.
- 36:08Speaker 2: I just feel like we make that a year round destination.
- 36:10Speaker 3: Because now it looks almost like a gingerbread house. Right,
- 36:13Speaker 3: it's been restored and it's very Victorian. It's kind of
- 36:16Speaker 3: by the train. It's right, it's probably fifteen feet maybe
- 36:20Speaker 3: too close, too close, ruining if the train derailed. The
- 36:23Speaker 3: first thing to go is the Myers house.
- 36:25Speaker 2: And what about what's the character's name, Laurie, Laurie Strode
- 36:28Speaker 2: is her house in the same area.
- 36:29Speaker 3: It's if you walk across the street and then a
- 36:32Speaker 3: few blocks in where the library is in South Pasadena.
- 36:35Speaker 3: It's across the street there and that was original recently
- 36:37Speaker 3: for sale. Oh I went to look at it and
- 36:40Speaker 3: it's been subdivided into three different use Yeah, it's a shame. Yeah,
- 36:46Speaker 3: why didn't Jamie buy it? Good question.
- 36:50Speaker 2: What is she doing with her money.
- 36:51Speaker 3: In buying her houses? And then there's the place where
- 36:54Speaker 3: the hedges you know from that movie where he peaks around.
- 36:57Speaker 2: Yeah, the hedge is still there.
- 36:58Speaker 3: The hedge is still there. And not only that, but
- 36:59Speaker 3: the house on the other side of the hedges from
- 37:01Speaker 3: Mama's family. Okay, let's Mama's family is what we should
- 37:05Speaker 3: be talking.
- 37:06Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, wow, those hedges. How long does a hedge live?
- 37:09Speaker 2: Is it the original hedge?
- 37:11Speaker 3: That's a good question.
- 37:12Speaker 2: Probably that'd be a forty five year old hedge.
- 37:15Speaker 3: Yeah, at least I know.
- 37:17Speaker 2: Oh I need to see that hedge. I'd like to
- 37:18Speaker 2: stick my hand through it or something.
- 37:20Speaker 3: You can walk, I mean, you can go up to
- 37:21Speaker 3: it as much as you like. Is it on someone's property, Yeah,
- 37:24Speaker 3: but it's right there by the sidewalk, you know.
- 37:26Speaker 2: Oh okay, so you could grab the homeowner.
- 37:28Speaker 3: You could. It might be Mama and then pee wee
- 37:32Speaker 3: Herman's house from the movies right around the corner. Too.
- 37:35Speaker 2: Incredible. Yeah, and it looks just like it did in
- 37:38Speaker 2: the movie.
- 37:38Speaker 3: Yeah. I think it's white or yellow? Now? Oh white?
- 37:41Speaker 3: What color is in the movie? Wasn't it red?
- 37:44Speaker 2: See again, we're going back to what colors I can remember.
- 37:46Speaker 3: Maybe it's red. Now, see I've got it all wrong.
- 37:48Speaker 3: I do know. There's like a three inch space under
- 37:50Speaker 3: the walls that you can if you want.
- 37:53Speaker 2: You're not allowed to speak after eight pm in that house. Okay,
- 37:59Speaker 2: well I have my car words here? Do you have
- 38:01Speaker 2: anything left to say about thinking? Do you send thank
- 38:02Speaker 2: you cards?
- 38:04Speaker 3: Occasionally? I do not, as a rule.
- 38:06Speaker 2: What sort of thing has to happen in order for
- 38:08Speaker 2: you to send a thank you card?
- 38:11Speaker 3: I think it has to have been a gift that
- 38:13Speaker 3: I received that I wasn't able to say thank you for, oh,
- 38:17Speaker 3: for some reason, right, or something special. So I will
- 38:21Speaker 3: at times, but I don't. I'm not one of those,
- 38:23Speaker 3: you know, obsessive thank you card right.
- 38:26Speaker 2: Some people are very good at it, Yeah, very on
- 38:28Speaker 2: top of it. They do it right away.
- 38:29Speaker 3: I know.
- 38:30Speaker 2: I never do it at all. Yeah, classless.
- 38:34Speaker 3: It adds an air of mystique, that's true. They won't.
- 38:37Speaker 2: You just leave them wondering if you cared about the gift.
- 38:39Speaker 3: Yeah, what did I get wrong? And then I'm gonna
- 38:41Speaker 3: try harder next year.
- 38:42Speaker 2: It's better and better every year. Yeah, until the person's
- 38:46Speaker 2: life has been absolutely demolished.
- 38:47Speaker 3: Well, you've made a career off getting gifts, so if
- 38:49Speaker 3: you were to start now.
- 38:50Speaker 2: It would be a career as a generous Well, you're
- 38:53Speaker 2: gonna have to know, I know, of course I'm gonna
- 38:55Speaker 2: have I mean, I will give these away to guests
- 38:57Speaker 2: after guests. The I think the third gift I got
- 39:00Speaker 2: on this was Lauren Lapus brought some thank you cards.
- 39:03Speaker 2: Oh and I don't know my apologies to Lauren Lapiz.
- 39:07Speaker 2: I'm not quite sure what happened to this, but it
- 39:09Speaker 2: was an early pandemic, so I wasn't responsible for anything.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I was going to ask if you had a chest
- 39:15Speaker 3: or a trunk of every gift. I have a garage
- 39:17Speaker 3: a garage, but they're not all in one place or anything.
- 39:20Speaker 2: No, I uh, there are a bunch here in the
- 39:22Speaker 2: studio now, Thank god. Kind of the most camera ready gifts?
- 39:26Speaker 3: Who gave you the Redneck Plunger? Rob Hubell?
- 39:29Speaker 2: Oh nice, Yeah, that was a great one. I think
- 39:33Speaker 2: I wonder if I would be able to remember I've
- 39:36Speaker 2: received probably I mean hundreds of gifts at this point.
- 39:39Speaker 2: It'd be an interesting challenge for my memory and my
- 39:42Speaker 2: gratitude to see if I knew which each gift who
- 39:45Speaker 2: gave each gift.
- 39:46Speaker 3: It would be cool to stack them all in a
- 39:48Speaker 3: room and have you go through and see if you
- 39:50Speaker 3: could get them right. Oh my god, that would be harrid.
- 39:52Speaker 3: I mean you have to match them with names, so
- 39:54Speaker 3: you get to see all the names right. Reminded, I think,
- 39:56Speaker 3: I probably it's a price is right game.
- 39:59Speaker 2: And what I win just the knowledge that my brain
- 40:02Speaker 2: is still functioning in vacuum. If I get a vacuum,
- 40:07Speaker 2: I will do anything, draw on a vacuum. I've gotten
- 40:10Speaker 2: a vacuum on this podcast. My boyfriend gave me the vacuum,
- 40:13Speaker 2: and I told him not to spend too much money
- 40:14Speaker 2: on it. He came on the podcast and gave me
- 40:16Speaker 2: a vacum. What kind of vacuum it might be? Abissle
- 40:19Speaker 2: Really yeah, it works pretty well.
- 40:21Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 40:22Speaker 2: I mean our other vacuum was working just fine. That
- 40:25Speaker 2: was the big problem. You complained and complained and complained
- 40:28Speaker 2: about the vacuum. It was working totally fine, So it
- 40:30Speaker 2: was upsetting to get a new vacuum.
- 40:32Speaker 3: I see. But he wanted it, but he disguised it
- 40:34Speaker 3: as a gift, right to stealth gift.
- 40:37Speaker 2: Kind of a classic sitcom Trope. Here's the bowling Pall, honey,
- 40:41Speaker 2: that kind of thing. Well, I think we should play
- 40:45Speaker 2: a game. Okay, We're going to play a game called
- 40:47Speaker 2: Gift Master. But I need a number between one and
- 40:50Speaker 2: ten from you.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Four. Okay.
- 40:51Speaker 2: I have to do some light calculating to get our
- 40:53Speaker 2: game pieces. So right now, you can promote, recommend, do
- 40:56Speaker 2: whatever you want.
- 40:57Speaker 3: I'll be right back. Oh golly, well, I'm having a
- 41:00Speaker 3: child in January thirty first, so come on and check
- 41:04Speaker 3: that out. We'll probably be at a hospital near you.
- 41:09Speaker 3: What else can I tell you? I have a couple
- 41:11Speaker 3: of podcasts, I guess with Gorley and Rust and Bananas
- 41:15Speaker 3: for Bonanza, and you can check those out. And there's the
- 41:20Speaker 3: Conan O'Brien podcast.
- 41:22Speaker 4: There's everyone.
- 41:33Speaker 2: Go leave a one star review for everything you just heard.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Please do, but only if you go to that hotel
- 41:40Speaker 3: and give it to them as well.
- 41:42Speaker 2: No, go listen to Matt's wonderful. Let's support Matt. Also,
- 41:46Speaker 2: I've never I haven't mentioned in years that people should
- 41:48Speaker 2: be leaving reviews for this podcast. Do those matter anymore?
- 41:52Speaker 3: I they might bump you up in the algorithm, but
- 41:54Speaker 3: I don't know. Do people even I think a lot
- 41:57Speaker 3: of people spread their listening among different podcast apps. Now,
- 42:01Speaker 3: so you used to all be Apple based, and I
- 42:03Speaker 3: don't know.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Does anyone care about anything anymore?
- 42:06Speaker 3: Is the big question. I don't go leave a.
- 42:07Speaker 2: Review stopping selfish, leave a gorgeous review of this podcast,
- 42:12Speaker 2: and then a bunch of one starts for Matt again. Okay,
- 42:15Speaker 2: this is how we play gift Masters. I'm going to
- 42:17Speaker 2: name three celebrities, three famous people, and then I'm going
- 42:20Speaker 2: to name three gifts things you can give away. You're
- 42:22Speaker 2: going to tell me which gift you would give which
- 42:24Speaker 2: person and why I love it.
- 42:26Speaker 3: Does that make perfect sense? Ye? All right.
- 42:27Speaker 2: The celebrities today are number one Alec Baldwin, number two
- 42:30Speaker 2: Jamie Lynn Spears, and number three Margaret Atwood. The gift
- 42:35Speaker 2: you will be giving are a bullet bike, rock hard
- 42:38Speaker 2: abs and omnipotence. That's more of an experience.
- 42:42Speaker 3: I have some questions. What's a bullet bike? A bullet
- 42:45Speaker 3: bike that's what Jamie Lynn Spears.
- 42:49Speaker 2: It's on the I'm trying to Jamie Lynn Spears is
- 42:51Speaker 2: a very fast motorcycle, and a bullet bike is Britney
- 42:56Speaker 2: Spears younger sister.
- 42:57Speaker 3: Okay, all right, bullet bike, omnipotence. What do we call that?
- 43:01Speaker 3: I call that a bullet bike?
- 43:03Speaker 2: The you know, the very the small stylish looking motorcycles
- 43:07Speaker 2: that aren't a dirt bike or Harley. What is that called?
- 43:10Speaker 3: Oh, we used to call they had a brand name.
- 43:13Speaker 3: They're called Ninja's when I was.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Young, Ninjas.
- 43:16Speaker 3: But like a street bike, kind of like a street
- 43:18Speaker 3: racing bike. A bullet bike maybe that? Okay, so a
- 43:20Speaker 3: bullet bike. Omnipotence and rock Hard Abs and Jamie Lynn Spears,
- 43:25Speaker 3: Margaret Atwood and Alec Baldwin, who I saw at Disneyland
- 43:29Speaker 3: a couple of weeks ago. You're kidding with the whole crew?
- 43:32Speaker 3: The whole crew. Are they still doing the reality show?
- 43:34Speaker 3: I don't know. They've been followed by a camera crew. No,
- 43:37Speaker 3: they were there, but I think because his wife was
- 43:39Speaker 3: on Dancing with the Stars and they all contractually have
- 43:41Speaker 3: to do some like b roll at Disney.
- 43:43Speaker 2: Oh. I'm sure he was having the time of his life.
- 43:46Speaker 3: Seemed like he was okay with it. He has like
- 43:48Speaker 3: forty kids. Yeah, it's crazy, and they were all there. Yeah,
- 43:53Speaker 3: have you seen the reality show? We watched the first episode.
- 43:57Speaker 3: I got enough.
- 43:58Speaker 2: It's a fascinating experience.
- 44:00Speaker 3: On many levels. On many levels, it's very How did
- 44:04Speaker 3: she do in Dancing with the Stars. I don't know.
- 44:07Speaker 2: I feel like she's probably not that great of a dancer.
- 44:09Speaker 3: Doesn't seem like it. I don't think she was well liked.
- 44:13Speaker 3: I don't think people were. You know, you can get
- 44:15Speaker 3: voted above your dancing talent.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Just sany really took it away for quite a while. Yeah,
- 44:23Speaker 2: but I feel like she's not a well loved doesn't
- 44:26Speaker 2: seem what's your name, Hilario Baldwin re? Yeah, yeah, and
- 44:31Speaker 2: you can go in between accents. Oh yes, so you
- 44:36Speaker 2: saw him Disneylan. Did you see what ride they were
- 44:37Speaker 2: going on?
- 44:38Speaker 3: No, they were They were outside the like fantasyland place
- 44:42Speaker 3: where you can get pancakes.
- 44:45Speaker 2: That's a good thing when you have forty children.
- 44:48Speaker 3: Were just like corawling up all of them and I
- 44:52Speaker 3: think they had to do that every fifteen minutes to
- 44:54Speaker 3: make sure they didn't lose someone. And you know how
- 44:56Speaker 3: you can go to Disneyland with those plaid vested guides.
- 44:58Speaker 3: Oh yes, yes, seem like we had three. That's a minimum.
- 45:02Speaker 2: Yeah, that size of family.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Okay, bullet bike, omnipotence and rock hard abs from Margaret Atwood,
- 45:08Speaker 3: Jamie Lynn Spears, and Alec Baldwin, mister Hilario, Margaret Atwood
- 45:16Speaker 3: the author. Yeah, but what does she write?
- 45:18Speaker 2: She wrote most famously the handmade Stexts.
- 45:21Speaker 3: Right, Okay, I'm going to give her omnipotence. Okay, Okay? Why?
- 45:24Speaker 3: I just feel like if she has that kind of
- 45:26Speaker 3: perception for that book, being as old as it is
- 45:28Speaker 3: and as prescient as it's become. Sure even at the
- 45:31Speaker 3: time I could see how she had written.
- 45:34Speaker 2: It, she should be able to control whatever she wants.
- 45:36Speaker 3: I trust her with the keys more than Alec and Jamie.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Okay, I would lean Jamie. Would You don't see what
- 45:42Speaker 2: Jamie has to do with unlimited power. She's got the brain,
- 45:46Speaker 2: she's got.
- 45:46Speaker 3: What is she done with limited power? Because they say,
- 45:51Speaker 3: you know, having some limits is a good thing. But
- 45:54Speaker 3: she's going to go full Kiligula or something. Okay, I'm
- 45:58Speaker 3: comfortable with that, Okay. And and Keys to the World,
- 46:01Speaker 3: Keys to the Bike? How old is Jamie Lynn Spears? Now?
- 46:04Speaker 3: Is she fit? Does she already have rock hard abs?
- 46:06Speaker 3: I don't want to give her a gift she doesn't need.
- 46:08Speaker 2: Right, you don't want to double up on rock hard abs, but.
- 46:11Speaker 3: I'm hesitant to give Alex rock card abs.
- 46:13Speaker 2: That's almost like ultimate ultimate power for him, I know.
- 46:16Speaker 3: And if she does have rock hard abs, is he
- 46:18Speaker 3: still is stack right?
- 46:19Speaker 2: That's your looking person?
- 46:22Speaker 3: Yeah? Interesting, but I'd love to see him on a
- 46:25Speaker 3: bullet bike.
- 46:26Speaker 2: Yeahs A balance.
- 46:28Speaker 3: Is yeah, Google, Jamie lin Spears, Let's see what she
- 46:31Speaker 3: looks like right now?
- 46:32Speaker 2: Okay, this is that's a out Jamie Lin Spears, twenty
- 46:34Speaker 2: twenty five. Let's see Google, Google shut down. Your whole
- 46:40Speaker 2: search engine is so bad. The images that we're getting
- 46:43Speaker 2: are too small. The resolution should be bigger.
- 46:47Speaker 3: Look at this.
- 46:47Speaker 2: How blurry that photo is. That's this year, that's this year. Okay,
- 46:51Speaker 2: So she looks like she probably doesn't need rock hard abs.
- 46:56Speaker 3: Okay, then I have no choice. I guess like my
- 46:59Speaker 3: hand is worst. I don't even know if she wants
- 47:01Speaker 3: a bullet bike, but Jamie Spears is getting a bullet bike.
- 47:04Speaker 2: I can see her zipping around town on one of
- 47:06Speaker 2: those Tokyo.
- 47:07Speaker 3: Yeah, the pictures you showed me, she's in kind of
- 47:09Speaker 3: like a Catholic schoolgirl thing, which is very Japanese school uniform.
- 47:14Speaker 2: I can see her kind of pulling that all together
- 47:16Speaker 2: and making that her new thing, her comeback, her comeback
- 47:20Speaker 2: as someone who drives around Tokyo.
- 47:22Speaker 3: In a bullet bottom and on one and then, Yes,
- 47:27Speaker 3: Alec Baldwin gets rock hard abs, but no other part
- 47:30Speaker 3: of his body is allowed to improve.
- 47:32Speaker 2: Every other part of his body has to get much
- 47:34Speaker 2: much worse.
- 47:35Speaker 3: Yes, so.
- 47:40Speaker 2: Fascinating that that gets another reality show, I would tell
- 47:44Speaker 2: And if he.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Wants to just catch him at the right height through
- 47:46Speaker 3: a porthole, you would think, like, this is the most
- 47:49Speaker 3: fit man.
- 47:50Speaker 2: A porthole just to look at men's abbs.
- 47:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's yeah, it's just like it's like a family
- 47:58Speaker 3: friendly glory hole.
- 47:59Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. Okay, well you answered this perfectly. Thank you
- 48:03Speaker 2: very well done. This is the final segment of the podcast.
- 48:06Speaker 2: It's called I Said No Emails. People write into I
- 48:09Speaker 2: Said No gifts at gmail dot com desperate for answers.
- 48:12Speaker 2: People are wondering all sorts of things and begging for help, etc.
- 48:15Speaker 2: We hope me answer a question. All right, this is
- 48:18Speaker 2: hello Cold. My stepfather's birthday is approaching. I'll be honest.
- 48:23Speaker 2: Despite living together for a decade, we still don't know
- 48:25Speaker 2: a lot about each other. As far as I know,
- 48:27Speaker 2: he likes two things, Siamese cats and woodworking. I have
- 48:31Speaker 2: given him figurines of Siamese cats for the past several gifts.
- 48:35Speaker 2: I think I need to get him something else at
- 48:37Speaker 2: this point, as his desk is running out of room
- 48:39Speaker 2: for Siamese cats. What do you get for the man
- 48:42Speaker 2: who likes nothing? He doesn't like restaurants or movies? Thanks,
- 48:45Speaker 2: and that's from jmm. They them terrible stepchild. Get him
- 48:51Speaker 2: a new stepchild.
- 48:53Speaker 3: Get into him an actual Siamese cat.
- 48:55Speaker 2: I mean, this is something I'm a huge advocate of,
- 48:58Speaker 2: is giving people live animal most pets.
- 49:00Speaker 3: I think that's responsible.
- 49:02Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a win for the person and the animal.
- 49:07Speaker 2: We know that everyone will be taken care of in
- 49:09Speaker 2: that situation. The more the merrier. Yeah, Siamese cats, they're expensive,
- 49:14Speaker 2: they're classy. H he loves them?
- 49:18Speaker 3: Does he?
- 49:18Speaker 2: Does he own any or is he just obsessed with
- 49:20Speaker 2: the concept or is.
- 49:21Speaker 3: This one of those runaway things where someone thinks you
- 49:24Speaker 3: like something so they keep getting all you mentioned it once,
- 49:28Speaker 3: you know? And now the stepchild sees all these like
- 49:31Speaker 3: Siamese cat bricker brac everywhere, but doesn't stop to think
- 49:35Speaker 3: that they gave them.
- 49:36Speaker 2: All right, right, and meanwhile, like the rift between them
- 49:41Speaker 2: is growing. They don't think that this person enjoys anything.
- 49:45Speaker 2: He doesn't think that they know anything about him, And
- 49:48Speaker 2: the pile of cat garbage is just growing and growing
- 49:52Speaker 2: and growing.
- 49:52Speaker 3: I think you got to take Siamese cats off the table.
- 49:55Speaker 3: You have a clue here. With woodworking. I enjoy woodworking.
- 49:57Speaker 3: I know you can get it's their somewhat pricey, but
- 50:01Speaker 3: there's a brand called Woodpeckers that makes these really good
- 50:05Speaker 3: precision measuring instruments like mini squares and stuff like that.
- 50:09Speaker 3: And I think if your stepfather likes and enjoys woodworking,
- 50:12Speaker 3: having one of these quality things would really make the difference.
- 50:14Speaker 3: I love them. What are you making with your woodworking?
- 50:17Speaker 3: Just home renovations and shelves and lanterns and shits.
- 50:25Speaker 2: Lanterns. Yeah, I mean it's some lanterns. I've made seven lanterns,
- 50:31Speaker 2: like maybe eight. I don't know what inspired the lantern idea,
- 50:35Speaker 2: just having a backyard that needed lanterns.
- 50:38Speaker 3: It's like I took a look and said this, some
- 50:41Speaker 3: lanterns could spruce this place up. Is this all self taught?
- 50:44Speaker 2: Well?
- 50:45Speaker 3: I was a scenic design manager, so I learned some
- 50:47Speaker 3: basic carpenter skills. Then, but then I've had to kind
- 50:49Speaker 3: of YouTube a lot.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, okay, have you had any failed projects?
- 50:54Speaker 3: Oh? Sure? Like what well, just recently, I've been building
- 50:58Speaker 3: out a back house studio office, and so I decided
- 51:02Speaker 3: to build a standing desk within a built in like
- 51:06Speaker 3: kind of grander desk. Oh and then I did that,
- 51:10Speaker 3: and then the standing desk mechanism broke and I had
- 51:13Speaker 3: already built it in, so I had to destroy it. Oh,
- 51:16Speaker 3: and then remake it so I could take it apart.
- 51:18Speaker 3: If this happens again, I had a waste of time.
- 51:21Speaker 2: It was.
- 51:21Speaker 3: It was one of the hardest days of my life.
- 51:23Speaker 2: Did it damage the original desk?
- 51:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I had to destroy the whole desk. Not the
- 51:27Speaker 3: whole desk, I had to destroy the two inner sides
- 51:30Speaker 3: of it. Oh my god. I did just crowbar it apart.
- 51:32Speaker 3: It was like killing a child.
- 51:34Speaker 4: It was hard.
- 51:36Speaker 3: How did it break? The mechanism just was trying to recalibrate.
- 51:41Speaker 3: But because I had built this was my mistake. I
- 51:43Speaker 3: built it into a desk. It was rubbing up on
- 51:47Speaker 3: parts that it should be. Oh, and it broke itself
- 51:51Speaker 3: or I did it?
- 51:52Speaker 2: Just bad workmanship on my part, the poor carpenter who
- 51:56Speaker 2: blames his desk.
- 51:57Speaker 3: I'm taking the blame. I am. I got to it eventually.
- 52:00Speaker 3: I didn't want to admit it at first. And are
- 52:02Speaker 3: you staining all of it? And all this staining finishing masonry.
- 52:06Speaker 2: My dog recently not off a part of my armchair,
- 52:09Speaker 2: the wood leg, and I don't know what to well,
- 52:11Speaker 2: just part of it. I don't know. Should I just
- 52:12Speaker 2: put some stain on there and hope people don't notice?
- 52:14Speaker 2: Or is it sand it down.
- 52:16Speaker 3: Three dimensionally pulled apart or just on the like surface.
- 52:19Speaker 2: You know, it's like a little you know leg, it's
- 52:22Speaker 2: like round.
- 52:22Speaker 3: And curvy, like a mid century kind of.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Or almost like a Victorian or something like Gabriel Lake,
- 52:29Speaker 2: you know, like I would say, like French Ish, I
- 52:32Speaker 2: don't know exactly.
- 52:34Speaker 3: How like a claw foot kind of thing.
- 52:36Speaker 2: Yeah, like a little clawfoot Gabriel leg. Okay, yeah, whatever
- 52:39Speaker 2: that is.
- 52:40Speaker 3: That's what it is.
- 52:40Speaker 2: That's what this and she not off essentially the knee
- 52:42Speaker 2: of it. So now it's like kind of like do
- 52:46Speaker 2: I sand that down and then stain it? I don't
- 52:48Speaker 2: want to take it to somebody. That seems like a
- 52:50Speaker 2: lot to put an armchair in the car to get
- 52:52Speaker 2: this one little thing figs.
- 52:54Speaker 3: You can sand it and then you'll probably fill it
- 52:57Speaker 3: a little bit with some filler filler if they're there's
- 53:00Speaker 3: little divots in it. It's flat, it's flat in flat shape.
- 53:03Speaker 3: You know what you get. Restore a finish.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Restore a finish, and it's.
- 53:06Speaker 3: Something you can just rub on and you can buy
- 53:08Speaker 3: it in the kind of color of the finish of
- 53:10Speaker 3: the whole and try that at least and see if
- 53:13Speaker 3: that helps you. But usually that if it's just like
- 53:15Speaker 3: superficial Mars and din'ts like you can.
- 53:19Speaker 2: And sand it a little bit first.
- 53:20Speaker 3: Don't sand it first. You just put this in and
- 53:22Speaker 3: it'll usually darken it up and kind of then you've
- 53:24Speaker 3: kind of buffet a little bit. Restore a finish. Yeah,
- 53:27Speaker 3: and there's no E on the restore. It's like restore
- 53:29Speaker 3: hyphen a hyphen.
- 53:31Speaker 2: Oh interesting, restore a finish.
- 53:33Speaker 3: And if there isn't be really careful something that's another brand.
- 53:37Speaker 3: I do not condon't. God knows what will happen. Yeah,
- 53:39Speaker 3: I don't endorse.
- 53:41Speaker 2: But we're saying, uh jmm, get some sort of woodworking
- 53:44Speaker 2: woodpecker tool. No more Siamese cats unless they're the real thing. Yeah,
- 53:49Speaker 2: and the best breeder you can find go to the
- 53:51Speaker 2: cat mill.
- 53:52Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 53:53Speaker 2: This podcast is very pro animal mill, puppy and cat shop.
- 53:58Speaker 2: Don't adopt. I had some listeners attack me about my
- 54:02Speaker 2: dog that we recently got. They thought that I had
- 54:04Speaker 2: bought her. What have I done on this podcast that
- 54:06Speaker 2: makes people think I'm going to able to buy a dog?
- 54:09Speaker 3: You just said, and if you've said anything like that before,
- 54:13Speaker 3: I would imagine that's why they thought that I adopted her.
- 54:16Speaker 3: Of course I rescued the dog. Okay, well what kind
- 54:19Speaker 3: of dog? And what's the dog's name.
- 54:20Speaker 2: She's a Rottweiler named Bonnie. Wow, she's ten months old
- 54:24Speaker 2: and she's in heat. Really, she's becoming a woman. I've
- 54:28Speaker 2: never dealt with something like this. To get her, she
- 54:31Speaker 2: has to get spade. But they say you should go
- 54:33Speaker 2: through at least one heat with a puppy.
- 54:35Speaker 3: That makes sense because it prevents.
- 54:37Speaker 2: Let's urn their issues. Yeah, maybe you avoid some cancer
- 54:41Speaker 2: or something.
- 54:41Speaker 3: So future Bonnie, how did you happen on the name Bonnie?
- 54:44Speaker 3: I wanted to name her Ronnie, after Ronnie Spector. I
- 54:47Speaker 3: love Ronnie Spoter, but my boyfriend her last dog was
- 54:50Speaker 3: named Edie, and she was frequently being called Eddie, being
- 54:53Speaker 3: misgendered Edie, and I know where that goes.
- 54:56Speaker 2: Yeah, so Jim said let's give her a nice, clear Bonnie.
- 54:59Speaker 2: And so that was close enough.
- 55:02Speaker 3: Oh I see, Okay, Yeah.
- 55:04Speaker 2: I'm sorry with pet gender. I'm like, it's not very
- 55:06Speaker 2: high stakes for me.
- 55:07Speaker 3: No, I mean we named her daughter Glenn. I mean
- 55:10Speaker 3: it's clearly.
- 55:11Speaker 2: Not for me either, when people really get sensitive about
- 55:16Speaker 2: a pet's gender. I don't own the dog. I don't
- 55:18Speaker 2: own the cat. I'm just assuming. Yeah, don't get after
- 55:22Speaker 2: me that if I say he or she. It's just
- 55:25Speaker 2: let me know in a nice, non aggressive way.
- 55:28Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree with you. It's a dog. It's a dog.
- 55:31Speaker 2: And we love the dog. Yeah, we love Bonnie.
- 55:32Speaker 3: Wait, you have a cat?
- 55:34Speaker 2: A cat, not a Siamese.
- 55:36Speaker 3: No, she's part main coon. Oh, high maintenance.
- 55:42Speaker 2: A lot of fur, a lot of fur shedding it.
- 55:45Speaker 3: No, she pulls a lot off, but it doesn't like
- 55:48Speaker 3: she doesn't leave a wake of fur. Okay, And I'm
- 55:51Speaker 3: I think fairly allergic, but not to her because she's
- 55:53Speaker 3: one of those kind of long hair oh aologenic and
- 55:56Speaker 3: she's like a kind of like a plus sized mob.
- 56:00Speaker 3: I love this cat. She knows it. He's beautiful and
- 56:02Speaker 3: she knows it. She'll let you know it. I love
- 56:06Speaker 3: her though. She's kind of the person in all of
- 56:09Speaker 3: our family that will acknowledge me first in the morning.
- 56:12Speaker 2: What's her name?
- 56:13Speaker 3: Margo? Margo? I love that.
- 56:15Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 56:15Speaker 2: And how old is she?
- 56:16Speaker 3: She's I'm fourteen. Oh wow, yeah, but even another decade
- 56:20Speaker 3: with that cat, I hope. So. I love ke. Yeah,
- 56:22Speaker 3: she's one of my best friends.
- 56:23Speaker 2: I just learned that when at least a dog goes
- 56:26Speaker 2: in heat, they do something called blowing their coat, which
- 56:28Speaker 2: is suddenly all of their fur is just all over the.
- 56:31Speaker 3: House, and that's a heat thing. Yeah.
- 56:33Speaker 2: I was like, oh, is she like, is she malnourished?
- 56:36Speaker 2: What's happening? She might be we're't you know, maybe we're
- 56:40Speaker 2: bad pet owners, but I think she's healthy. And when
- 56:42Speaker 2: they're in heat, they just suddenly start losing tons and
- 56:45Speaker 2: tons the amount of hair that a dog is able
- 56:46Speaker 2: to produce. Yeah, that they leave enough around the house
- 56:49Speaker 2: to like fill a garbage can and still have fur
- 56:52Speaker 2: on their body. It's yeah, I don't know, nature, jamm
- 56:56Speaker 2: If you've gotten some sort of answer, and I know
- 56:58Speaker 2: you have that it's time to repair your relationship with
- 57:02Speaker 2: the stepfather. Ten years is too long to hate each other.
- 57:06Speaker 2: It's time to live in some sort of civil household
- 57:10Speaker 2: with all of the Siamese cats.
- 57:11Speaker 3: You by him.
- 57:12Speaker 2: We answered the question perfectly. I have all of these
- 57:15Speaker 2: thank you cards. This is perfect. Every guest from the
- 57:19Speaker 2: next eight people.
- 57:23Speaker 3: I know.
- 57:23Speaker 2: That's when you say, should I give them an order
- 57:25Speaker 2: as just sequentially or should I give them what I care? Yeah,
- 57:29Speaker 2: that's what I could create some drama.
- 57:30Speaker 3: This comes with no, you know, no expectations, So use
- 57:34Speaker 3: them how you will.
- 57:35Speaker 2: This podcast could use some drama in the headlines. You know,
- 57:37Speaker 2: somebody's mad they didn't get a thank you card. They
- 57:39Speaker 2: will never come back.
- 57:40Speaker 3: Well, now they know that they could get one exactly.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Oh man, I really put you in a bond. Yes,
- 57:45Speaker 3: I mean starting with me, starting with I know. Oh
- 57:48Speaker 3: my god, I know, what do you do there? Oh
- 57:50Speaker 3: my god, I feel like I've got to give you one. No,
- 57:53Speaker 3: no expectations. I told you this was very tacky. I've
- 57:56Speaker 3: ever seen them. I've already seen them.
- 57:59Speaker 2: Well, I'll think about it, Okay, think about it. Thank
- 58:01Speaker 2: you for these. I've had such a nice time with
- 58:03Speaker 2: you here today.
- 58:04Speaker 3: Thanks for having me listener. The podcast is over.
- 58:07Speaker 2: I'm letting you go. I've decided to release you for
- 58:10Speaker 2: the day and go do something else, find something nice
- 58:14Speaker 2: to do. I love you, goodbye, I said, No Gifts
- 58:21Speaker 2: is an exactly right production. Our senior producer is on
- 58:25Speaker 2: Alise Nelson, and our episodes are beautifully mixed by Ben Tolliday.
- 58:30Speaker 2: The theme song is by miracle Worker Amy Mann, and
- 58:33Speaker 2: we couldn't do it without our booker, Patrick Cottner. You
- 58:36Speaker 2: must follow the show on Instagram, and I said, No Gifts.
- 58:39Speaker 2: That's where you're going to see pictures of all these
- 58:41Speaker 2: wonderful gifts I'm getting. And don't you want to see
- 58:44Speaker 2: the gifts?
- 58:45Speaker 1: And why did you hear?
- 58:50Speaker 3: Fun?
- 58:50Speaker 2: A man?
- 58:51Speaker 1: Myself perfectly clear? But you're a guess, Tom, you gotta
- 58:59Speaker 1: come to me empty And I said, no, guest, your
- 59:04Speaker 1: own presence is presents enough. I already had too much stuff,
- 59:12Speaker 1: So how do you dare to surbey me?
