- 0:45SPEAKER_01: When did you come to Three Pillars?
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: I think it was in March of uh this'll be the uh it'll be two complete years.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: In March.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, so uh a a couple years.
- 1:00SPEAKER_01: Wonderful.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: And where are you from?
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Or where did you, when you moved to Three Pillars, where had you been previously?
- 1:07SPEAKER_00: For eight days in ICU.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's not fun.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Where they didn't expect I would live.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: They had the doctors and nurses had given up on me.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: My brother flew home from Florida, and I was in ICU for eight days.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: You gave everyone a big scare.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I did, yes, I did.
- 1:30SPEAKER_01: And then you decided not today.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Well, I guess the good Lord wasn't ready for me.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: You had work to do out here, Lois.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: So at that time you decided a little peace of mind maybe was a good move?
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: I would live alone.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And after what I went through, I was afraid to be alone.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: So it was my decision to give up my house, sell my house and all my belongings, and move to some work to assist in living.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: But Mark, the CEO, lives right across from my brother in Asherman.
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: And then the first time that I did a bunny walk, guess who I walked with?
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Mark.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: With Mark.
- 2:15SPEAKER_01: It's good to have nice neighbors, huh?
- 2:18SPEAKER_00: And the other day when we had the last bunny walk, then as we came towards the door, he was there, and I said, Hi, Mark, you know, and and I said, you know, I never got a picture.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: We were gonna get a picture of you.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's I have a big one, he said.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: I I will I had planned on giving it to your brother, but it's you want it, so we have it posted in the It's a poster, it's asking you shall receive logs.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: You want the picture?
- 2:52SPEAKER_01: Did you frame it and matter?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: Is it my sister-in-law just hung it up on the wall?
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: Oh nice.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And people have noticed it as they come in.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: Well, people might start asking you for autographs because that was used as a promotion.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: You that you might as well, I mean, that was a supermodel photo of you.
- 3:11SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 3:12SPEAKER_01: Do you agree?
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Well, I guess so.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: It's a beautiful photo.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: We should put that one on our next uh billboard.
- 3:20SPEAKER_00: There we go.
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, and and one of the workers, I think was it Kim, somebody brought me uh from a um class uh was it arrowhead, one one school that had the senior pictures in, and on the back of that there was this advertisement with my picture and and mark.
- 3:45SPEAKER_02: Well I guess you're famous.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: Very famous seen in all sorts of publications.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Well, thanks for uh allowing us to use your beautiful photo.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: And I'm glad you got the big copy.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think that's a good thing.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's fun.
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: That's so fun.
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: Okay, let's take it back.
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: Where are you from, Lois?
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: Before the ICU and before Three Pillars.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: Tell us about your life before.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: I lived with I I was born in the town of Wakanemak on a farm.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: I was born at home, and um I lived there with my I I was never I never married, and I lived with my parents on the farm and helped with farm work, you know.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And um in 1983 they sold the farm and I bought a house in town and then they lived with me.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: I bought that in '83, and that but then my mother had to go to Shorehaven in '91.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: And my dad had to go there in ninety two or three.
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: That was nice and close to you in O'Connor.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: Yes, that was very c very good.
- 5:01SPEAKER_00: And uh then I like I said, I bought my house in '83 and lived there alone after my dad would had to go to to uh Shorehaven.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And uh I enjoyed my house and I I paid cash money for it when I bought it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: Not a lot of people can say that.
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And I really didn't start working at the hospital till 1968.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Before that, I did private uh work for neighbors, relatives, you know, and um did cleaning and and uh laundry and cooked meals and and uh there was a couple of families where the mother died and then I went a couple times a week and did laundry and cooked meals for them and and uh did that till 1968.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: And then I thought, hey, I gotta look out for myself because I was getting no benefits anywhere and I lived alone and I had to look out for my future, you know.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: So that's when I quit all those jobs and uh uh started working at the hospital.
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: I applied at the hospital and I'd really wanted to work in kitchen because I like to cook and make.
- 6:35SPEAKER_00: And uh but they were so short of house uh housekeeping, and because that was on my resume, uh they asked me would I work in housekeeping.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: So I worked in housekeeping, I would say about seven or eight years, and then they wanted needed someone to check surgery linen for stains and uh rips, and I also made all the packs for surgery.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: But then after about oh, maybe six, seven years, then they decided to go mostly disposable.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: So that job was eliminated.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: And I worked in one little room, it wasn't bigger than this room, and I worked there and I l I loved that job, you know, and uh felt really bad when I lost that job.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Well, then they offered me you're gonna laugh at this, the mail as a mail hurt, M-A-I-L.
- 7:41SPEAKER_01: Oh, that kind.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: I went, I made uh four interdepartmental mail runs every day and sorted all the incoming mail and stamped all the outgoing mail.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: So it was a busy job.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: But then when I retired in ninety-eight, I had the biggest retirement party I think anybody will ever had have because the whole hospital knew me.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, was there any job you didn't do there?
- 8:11SPEAKER_00: Well, I covered a few things.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: But I went from one little room like this to the whole hospital.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: And uh first I thought I thought, I'm not gonna like this.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: I I was really almost sick when I lost the uh linen job.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: The job you love so much.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: But turns out, interdepartmental mail run, do you got to meet everybody, see everybody?
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Was it on foot?
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes.
- 8:42SPEAKER_00: I had a cart.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: I had a cart.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: So you got your steps in all.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: Oh yes, I put on miles.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: I wore out a hip and then you walked hard.
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: But my blood pressure was always very good.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: So you said you used to like to bake.
- 9:02SPEAKER_02: What's your favorite thing to bake?
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'm noted for my sugar cookies.
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I he probably can't announce it, but is there a s a secret to your recipe?
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: Or how you make it?
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: Well, it's like the army sugar cookie.
- 9:18SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 9:19SPEAKER_02: Is that super buttery?
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: I don't put any butter in it.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: No butter.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:25SPEAKER_00: Just oil and margin.
- 9:27SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:28SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: And I I like Imperial.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: That was always my margin.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: That's your brand of choice?
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's I had best luck with that.
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: If you want.
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: And if you want to know how many cookies I baked, for many, many years after I was retired, I baked over 200 dozen every Christmas.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 9:50SPEAKER_01: There were many happy friends of yours waiting for their lowest cookies.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: I I still always had one person that I worked with at the hospital, and every year she bought 20 dozen.
- 10:03SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness.
- 10:05SPEAKER_02: So you you cooked over 200 dozen with Imperial.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: So I I say that.
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: No, there was some uh peak on fingers, I baked them with all butter, you know.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: But you know, my sugar cookies.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: Those everybody wanted them, you know.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: And uh, but now my sister-in-law bakes them, and my ne one of my nieces bakes them too.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: I just I always say they aren't as thin as mine, but they're good.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: They're good.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: They they have time yet to get great, like you were maybe.
- 10:39SPEAKER_02: Were you gonna say if Imperial wants to contact I was if anybody from Imperial is watching, Lois can be a brand ambassador for this.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: For your uh ambassador.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: That was always that was always my brand I bought.
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: For every anything that I use, margarine.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: That might be the key toil.
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: Well, two brand uh partnerships we're trying to secure for you.
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: We'll see what we can do.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Uh did you decorate them?
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Did you decorate them too then?
- 11:13SPEAKER_00: No, I just my on my sugar cookies I sprinkled red and green sugar on before I put them in them.
- 11:20SPEAKER_00: I did not like frosted cookies.
- 11:22SPEAKER_02: Got it.
- 11:23SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Straight.
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: Even here when they have frosted cookies, I don't I like them plain.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:31SPEAKER_01: Take or leave the frosting.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: And pecan fingers was another kind that I a lot of people ordered, and they're putty.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: They take a while.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: Those are the powdered ones, right?
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, might not have made those too.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: I love those.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: And you gotta roll their little logs.
- 11:48SPEAKER_01: You make little logs.
- 11:49unknown: Yeah.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 11:50SPEAKER_02: They are they are uh putsy, but they're really good.
- 11:53SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, I know a lot of people wanted them.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Now, would you bake could somebody get a batch of cookies in you know June, or was this a holiday?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: A holiday.
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I baked them year round.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: If they're there, and there was one lady from church that always got uh got them for Easter.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: Oh she wanted them for Easter.
- 12:13SPEAKER_00: Yes, just changed the sprinkles.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: Well, I would color other colored uh orange and blue blue or something.
- 12:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, good.
- 12:22SPEAKER_01: Wonderful.
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: And you also mentioned cooking when you were originally thinking for your first work at Pro Health.
- 12:29SPEAKER_01: So any other famous recipes as far as I love to make soup.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: I always made my own homemade soup, never bought it.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: All tomato soup for casseroles and stuff I bought in a can, but my other soup I all made soup.
- 12:45SPEAKER_00: And even here I like the soup.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Every day a different soup, right?
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and like if I I don't like one of the other entrees, I have two dishes of soup.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: Because I can make a meal out of soup.
- 12:58SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: That's enough in the evening.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: That's crackers or no crackers?
- 13:03SPEAKER_00: A few crackers.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: A little crumble.
- 13:05SPEAKER_01: A crumble of them?
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:07SPEAKER_02: Did you have a favorite soup to make?
- 13:11SPEAKER_00: Probably chicken noodles.
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Classic and warm.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: Like this.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Okay, now can we go back?
- 13:22SPEAKER_01: How many years did you spend at in your pro at Pro Health?
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Did you say 30?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: 30 years.
- 13:28SPEAKER_01: 30 years.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: And does any particularly happy or funny memory stand out?
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Like a story from your time your work there?
- 13:39SPEAKER_00: Like I said, I I really liked my little room.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: And then I was right next to um uh where they bring all the instruments and where they sterilize and do the surgery.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, because you had to use those as you were preparing like packets of the clean stuff?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: I I packaged it all up, you know.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: Was that a very sterile, like did you have to wear gloves and you're touching the sanitized stuff and it was very particular work?
- 14:13SPEAKER_00: No, I don't think they were quite as particular years ago as they are now.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: It makes sense.
- 14:19SPEAKER_01: And I'm sure it was all fresh when it came to the city.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: And you were on quality control to make sure stains ready.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:30SPEAKER_01: And was that um did you have like did you start your day and think I'm gonna do f a hundred today?
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Or did you have like quotas?
- 14:39SPEAKER_01: Or how did how how did your day go?
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: Well, it all depended upon how much linen surgery linen came in, you know.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: There were always a lot of towels, but I always had off on Wednesday because the hospital sent their laundry out, and that was from the weekend, and then there wasn't that much.
- 15:02SPEAKER_00: And uh so I I always had to work on Saturdays.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: But I was usually off on Sundays.
- 15:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: Well when I worked in housekeeping, there was many weekends and holidays that I had to work.
- 15:17SPEAKER_00: But that that was life.
- 15:19SPEAKER_00: I w you get used to that.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:23SPEAKER_01: So you in your linen world you had that midweek lull of Wednesdays.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: So what would your Wednesdays be filled with?
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: You had a day to yourself.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Well, that all depended upon, you know, what what kind of work I had.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, your uh with your other work, your private duty?
- 15:44SPEAKER_00: Sugar cookies.
- 15:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, baking, baking and cooking.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: That's fun.
- 15:50SPEAKER_01: And um did you walk to work?
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: Did you work at the Pro Health right now?
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: No.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: And um I rode with different people, picked me up.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: There was somebody from Lebanon that worked there, one of the men, and sometimes I went with him.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: And from Ashapon, there was uh a guy that would pick me up.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: And then a dear friend of mine, Mary Kenzel.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: She still is a good friend.
- 16:16SPEAKER_00: She comes to visit me here every Wednesday.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Shout out to Mary.
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, she's wonderful, and she always brings fruit or fresh tomatoes and uh canned pickles and you know.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: So that's nice.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Because what was your job or were you at the Okonemwalk Pro Health at that time?
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 16:39SPEAKER_02: How nice.
- 16:40unknown: Okay.
- 16:41SPEAKER_02: So Lois, uh what do you got going on this afternoon?
- 16:45SPEAKER_00: Not at nothing.
- 16:46SPEAKER_00: Nothing?
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: No.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Do you have family visiting today?
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think just till noon or so.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:54SPEAKER_00: My nephew is my financial guy and he had a right check count.
- 17:00SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay.
- 17:01SPEAKER_00: Three pillars wanted to be paid.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: That time, huh?
- 17:06SPEAKER_00: And the pharmacy bill and any other bills from the hospital or whatever, doctors.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Take care of business, huh?
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: And otherwise in your afternoons here, do you do book club or live music or what do you like?
- 17:22SPEAKER_00: I go to just about everything there is.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Do you have a favorite?
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: Oh yes.
- 17:28SPEAKER_00: Sparkle.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Oh, uh we started it with that's a club and we have a trophy and everything.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: You do?
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 17:36SPEAKER_00: Every six weeks the tr the trophy travels.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: We just started a new six week again.
- 17:42SPEAKER_00: Guess what?
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: I was high.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: I had the best score.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: Low, eh?
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Congratulations.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Congrats.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: You know how it goes.
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: The one, the uh fellow that uh got the trophy last week as high for the six weeks had the least yesterday.
- 18:02SPEAKER_01: It ends in flows, doesn't it?
- 18:04SPEAKER_01: Do you think Farkel's mostly luck, or is there a lot of skill?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, no.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: It's luck.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: It's not a dice roll.
- 18:11SPEAKER_01: Unless you do the magic shake or the do you have do you have do you do anything or you just roll with it and have fun?
- 18:18SPEAKER_01: Ooh, roll with it.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: See what I did then?
- 18:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 18:22SPEAKER_00: You know, we we each get a cup with six dice, and everybody has their own dice, so they're sterile and everything.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: And uh whatever, however they come up, you know.
- 18:35SPEAKER_00: One week I was really high too, then I had 14,000, which was really good.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Uh, but then the next couple weeks I was bad, so I went way down.
- 18:48SPEAKER_00: And there's eight or nine always that uh what fun.
- 18:53SPEAKER_01: Does it get a little loud?
- 18:54SPEAKER_01: Are you guys boisterous?
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: We get loud, yes.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: They hear us all over the place.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: Cheering each other on, of course.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they always oh yes, everybody cheers for everybody.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Nobody that's fun.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Nobody tells them not to get it.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: And many times I'll say, now roll three of a kind, and guess what?
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: They do it.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: The power of uh your words.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: That's nice of you to wish it.
