Latest / Foul Territory / Ken Rosenthal on Preller’s madness, SD-LAD + Merrifield joins FT to talk Blue Jays, Wheeler-less Phils
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Inside Scoop time with that FT senior insider Ken Rosenthal. Ken,
- 0:05Speaker 1: good to see you, and I cracked open the notes
- 0:07Speaker 1: column from the weekend covering the Dodgers and the Padres.
- 0:10Speaker 2: I'll hand it.
- 0:11Speaker 1: Over to you for your favorite note that you put
- 0:13Speaker 1: in there, or something that people should definitely know, and
- 0:15Speaker 1: then it will encourage them to read the rest in
- 0:17Speaker 1: the Athletic.
- 0:19Speaker 3: The column is basically a collection of notes mostly about
- 0:23Speaker 3: the new players on each team. There's a little bit
- 0:25Speaker 3: about Taioscar Hernandez and the Dodgers outfield situation, but it's
- 0:29Speaker 3: mostly that the guys who are new players on both teams,
- 0:32Speaker 3: and of course the Padres have a number of new players.
- 0:36Speaker 3: My favorite note in there was the difference that Loriano
- 0:41Speaker 3: and Ryan O'Hearn took, or the different approaches they took
- 0:45Speaker 3: in deciding whether to travel with the Orioles before the deadline.
- 0:50Speaker 3: Lorianno went to Chicago with the team. This was the
- 0:53Speaker 3: day before the deadline. The night before deciding or thinking
- 0:57Speaker 3: in his head, Hey, if I'm going to Chicago and
- 1:00Speaker 3: I get traded to either coast, I'm good well, O'Hearn
- 1:05Speaker 3: decided to stay back in Baltimore. Now he thought maybe
- 1:09Speaker 3: I'm getting traded to Boston Milwaukee. He didn't think he
- 1:13Speaker 3: would be traded to the West Coast, and of course
- 1:15Speaker 3: what happens, they both end up with the Padres and Loriano.
- 1:19Speaker 3: We talked about this on the broadcast Saturday, AJ and I.
- 1:22Speaker 3: Loreano's comment to AJ Preller was, you're nuts for doing
- 1:27Speaker 3: both guys, getting both guys, and I thought that was
- 1:29Speaker 3: a pretty bold thing for someone to say after just
- 1:31Speaker 3: getting traded over to a new team.
- 1:35Speaker 4: Ken. We were both in San Diego this past weekend,
- 1:38Speaker 4: like you said, and we got to talk to Preller.
- 1:41Speaker 4: My takeaway from Preller is he just wants to win.
- 1:44Speaker 4: He just wants to win. He and we talked you
- 1:46Speaker 4: were there, We talked prospects, we talked pitching, we talked
- 1:50Speaker 4: everything right, we talked foul territory, we talked Ken Rosenthal,
- 1:53Speaker 4: we talked at all. To me, I like you more
- 1:56Speaker 4: after talking to him the first time I've ever met him,
- 1:58Speaker 4: and after he said what he said, Yeah, I want
- 2:00Speaker 4: to win. I want to get this done. San Diego
- 2:02Speaker 4: has never won. Prospects or prospects, I mean kind of
- 2:05Speaker 4: all the stuff we've talked about. He's like, yeah, I
- 2:07Speaker 4: can get twenty more prospects at the draft. I can
- 2:09Speaker 4: get more guys. I mean, he just wants to win
- 2:11Speaker 4: and he's a genius, and I don't know that that
- 2:13Speaker 4: guy sleeps.
- 2:13Speaker 3: Ever, well, that's a great point. We all wonder whether
- 2:17Speaker 3: aj Preller sleeps. And to me, what he has done
- 2:21Speaker 3: in recent years. Now you can look into the future
- 2:24Speaker 3: and say some of those contracts are going to haunt them.
- 2:26Speaker 3: That's probably true. But he has taken advantage of an
- 2:31Speaker 3: industry that is pretty conservative, of rival general managers and
- 2:36Speaker 3: heads of baseball operations who are reluctant to trade prospects,
- 2:39Speaker 3: who operate in a cautious manner, and his operation or
- 2:46Speaker 3: his way he goes about it is kind of the
- 2:49Speaker 3: opposite of everybody else. Now, Dave Dombrowski's like that to
- 2:52Speaker 3: some extent. Jerry Depoto, of course, there are others, but
- 2:55Speaker 3: no one is as extreme as aj Preller, and he
- 2:57Speaker 3: is taking advantage of everybody else's seemingly cautious approach and
- 3:03Speaker 3: it served him well. This team is right now as
- 3:07Speaker 3: good as it could be, I would think, granted you'd
- 3:09Speaker 3: like to see them hit for more power. Maybe Tatis
- 3:11Speaker 3: snaps out of it. He at the home run last night,
- 3:14Speaker 3: ended the longest streak of his career without one. But
- 3:18Speaker 3: top to bottom their depth, it's really good. And this
- 3:21Speaker 3: is several years now, not just one or two, but
- 3:24Speaker 3: several years where they've been good and competitive and a
- 3:28Speaker 3: World Series contender. I remember at the start of this
- 3:31Speaker 3: all when he started loading up again twenty twenty one,
- 3:34Speaker 3: whenever it was I was thinking, it's going to be
- 3:38Speaker 3: difficult for him to sustain this because he keeps trading
- 3:40Speaker 3: away young players. And yet, as you said, Ajay, he
- 3:44Speaker 3: has a way of replenishing his system, and that's because
- 3:47Speaker 3: he's one of the best evaluators in the game. They
- 3:50Speaker 3: continually come up with new players and this is a tribute,
- 3:54Speaker 3: as he said to us, to their scouting and player development,
- 3:58Speaker 3: the people working in those departments. So the formula works
- 4:01Speaker 3: for them. Now, does it end up with them winning
- 4:04Speaker 3: the World Series this year? I don't know, No one knows.
- 4:06Speaker 3: There is a certain amount of luck involved. But has
- 4:09Speaker 3: he put this team in the best possible position to win? Yes?
- 4:13Speaker 3: And does he have that city in an electric kind
- 4:18Speaker 3: of mindset with regard to the club. Just look at
- 4:20Speaker 3: their attendance. They're going to go over three point four
- 4:22Speaker 3: million this year. It's going to be another club.
- 4:24Speaker 5: Record, all right, So maybe you already hit it by
- 4:28Speaker 5: what you just said. But you talked about fair territory
- 4:32Speaker 5: a lot about rivalries. The one thing you didn't talk
- 4:34Speaker 5: about because you said, right now, the best rivalry currently
- 4:38Speaker 5: is the Dodgers in Padres. So if everybody believes you,
- 4:43Speaker 5: I'm not saying I do or I don't, which side
- 4:45Speaker 5: doesn't matter more to because you've seen the Dodgers' side
- 4:49Speaker 5: of it, you've seen the Padres side of it. Which
- 4:52Speaker 5: side doesn't matter more to because if that's imbalanced, maybe
- 4:56Speaker 5: that's not as much of a rivalry as people think.
- 4:58Speaker 5: Because the Red Sox Yankees, their rivalry is heated on
- 5:01Speaker 5: both sides.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Well, a lot of Yankees and Red Sox fans took
- 5:05Speaker 3: exception with me saying Padres Dodgers was better. That's part
- 5:09Speaker 3: for the course, and listen, it's a great debate and
- 5:11Speaker 3: maybe in the eyes of certain fans it's not a
- 5:14Speaker 3: great debate. But regardless, I would say, right now, Eric,
- 5:17Speaker 3: to answer your question, it matters more to the Padres.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And even though they knocked out the Dodgers in twenty two,
- 5:24Speaker 3: they have not won the World Series, and they still
- 5:27Speaker 3: want to kind of knock off the Dodgers, slay the dragon,
- 5:31Speaker 3: as I always say, and then go all the way
- 5:33Speaker 3: and kind of prove themselves once and for all on
- 5:38Speaker 3: equal footing. So, yes, the Dodgers of course want to
- 5:42Speaker 3: beat the Padres and everyone else as well. But there
- 5:45Speaker 3: is a hunter versus hunted kind of situation going on here,
- 5:50Speaker 3: and the Padres are the hunter, and to me, it's
- 5:53Speaker 3: kind of apparent in the way this whole thing has
- 5:55Speaker 3: evolved this season.
- 5:59Speaker 4: Hey, Ken, So the Dodgers were the other team playing
- 6:01Speaker 4: in that game this weekend, the Dodgers and the Padres.
- 6:04Speaker 4: And we talked to Dave Roberts a little bit about
- 6:06Speaker 4: Tayo and right field. What's the long term thought on
- 6:11Speaker 4: Tayo and right Muki at short? I know, you know,
- 6:13Speaker 4: they killed that pretty quickly, and the Mookie is not
- 6:16Speaker 4: going back to right field, but Conflorida and left you know,
- 6:19Speaker 4: when Keith k comes back, Edmund comes back, Kim comes back.
- 6:22Speaker 4: Once he comes back, they're gonna have a roster crunch.
- 6:24Speaker 4: So what do they do with Taylor? Do they leave
- 6:25Speaker 4: him in right field? Noboe gets better?
- 6:28Speaker 3: Good question? First off, they should not move Mooki to
- 6:31Speaker 3: right field in my opinion, And I'll tell you why.
- 6:34Speaker 3: Mooki is playing right now. A brilliant shortstop really, if
- 6:38Speaker 3: you watch him play, he is adapted or has adapted
- 6:42Speaker 3: to that position as well as anyone possibly could. He
- 6:46Speaker 3: is shown that he can play it and play it
- 6:48Speaker 3: at a high level. So they are good with him
- 6:51Speaker 3: in shortstop. Now, the outfield, the situation with Hernandez is this,
- 6:55Speaker 3: If you play him and right, you're gonna have guys
- 6:57Speaker 3: going first to third. If you play him in left,
- 6:59Speaker 3: you're gonna have guy stretching singles into double. That's kind
- 7:02Speaker 3: of lesser of two Evils type of thing. He was
- 7:05Speaker 3: not a particularly good defender last season and left during
- 7:09Speaker 3: the regular season, but in the postseason was much better.
- 7:13Speaker 3: So I would expect that they're gonna keep him in
- 7:17Speaker 3: right because he does prefer right. He believes he sees
- 7:19Speaker 3: the ball better off the bat and right. And then
- 7:22Speaker 3: figure out left and center. Between Edmund and Hernandez and
- 7:27Speaker 3: Kim coming back, you can do a number of things there. Now,
- 7:31Speaker 3: there is some school of thought where their best defensive
- 7:34Speaker 3: outfield might be pies and right, Edmund and center. Tao
- 7:38Speaker 3: in left. But I don't know that they see it
- 7:40Speaker 3: that way. I don't know that they see it's that
- 7:42Speaker 3: much of a difference Tao and right or left. But
- 7:45Speaker 3: once these players come back, yes, it gives them a
- 7:48Speaker 3: much stronger group of players to choose from in the outfield.
- 7:53Speaker 3: And sure, Michael CONFORDO, because of all this, because of
- 7:56Speaker 3: all these guys returning, his spot's going to be in jet.
- 8:00Speaker 3: There's no doubt about that.
- 8:02Speaker 1: Okay, KP, this is your first arena club experience. We're
- 8:05Speaker 1: going to open a slab pack together. So first off,
- 8:07Speaker 1: we're gonna buy one of those twenty five dollars slab
- 8:09Speaker 1: packs and we get to.
- 8:10Speaker 2: See what is in the pack.
- 8:12Speaker 1: There it is the Grail, which is the best card
- 8:15Speaker 1: in the pack and worth the most. There are some
- 8:18Speaker 1: other cards that we're chasing, and you can see the
- 8:20Speaker 1: entire lineup so that you know what you're in the
- 8:21Speaker 1: running for. There's the Yamamoto signed card. Now let's open
- 8:26Speaker 1: up our pack and.
- 8:27Speaker 2: See how we do.
- 8:29Speaker 1: We have ourselves a really cool graphic and then a
- 8:35Speaker 1: show Heo Tani fifty to fifty card from last year.
- 8:39Speaker 1: What do you want to do? Should we sell it
- 8:41Speaker 1: right back to them for sixteen or should we keep it?
- 8:44Speaker 3: You should give it to me, I'll.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Keep good answer, fine, I will give it to you.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Since the Blue Jays didn't getto Tani, you can get
- 8:51Speaker 2: this fifty to fifty card instead.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Use the code foul ful to get yourself twenty percent
- 8:55Speaker 1: off your first slab pack or card purchase. Yes, you
- 8:58Speaker 1: get to keep that card if you want on it.
- 9:00Speaker 1: They send it to you foul at Arena club dot
- 9:02Speaker 1: com slash foul.
- 9:04Speaker 5: These two teams are gonna, most likely if one of
- 9:07Speaker 5: them is gonna face off with the Phillies in the playoffs.
- 9:10Speaker 5: Right now, the Phillies are in a good position, but
- 9:12Speaker 5: the Zach Wheeler loss. How much does that affect the Phillies'
- 9:18Speaker 5: playoff chances of winning not making the playoffs, but of winning.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Eric If we put odds on it and ask the question,
- 9:28Speaker 3: are the Phillies chances of winning the World Series better
- 9:30Speaker 3: with Zach Wheeler or without? Or what are those chances?
- 9:33Speaker 3: There's no question higher with Wheeler. The question is ultimately now,
- 9:39Speaker 3: can they win the World Series without Zach Wheeler? I
- 9:42Speaker 3: believe they can. I believe they can because Christopher Sanchez
- 9:45Speaker 3: and Rangers Suarez and Aaron Nola if he continues what
- 9:49Speaker 3: he did in his last start, and Jesus Lozardo and
- 9:52Speaker 3: even Taiwan Walker. It gives them a very good place
- 9:56Speaker 3: to start in their rotation. It's not the same as
- 9:59Speaker 3: it would be with Zach wheel No one would question that.
- 10:01Speaker 3: But given that, and given that their bullpen is much
- 10:05Speaker 3: improved with Duran and David Robertson, I still like them.
- 10:09Speaker 3: And we talk about hunger and desire and all that stuff,
- 10:13Speaker 3: the intangibles. They've got that too. Because they have not
- 10:16Speaker 3: won a World Series with this group, and this group
- 10:19Speaker 3: is getting older, real Mutto and Schwarber free agents. I
- 10:22Speaker 3: expect they probably will resign both, but they know this
- 10:26Speaker 3: is their time. It's not going to get any easier
- 10:29Speaker 3: next year. So I would expect that the Phillies will
- 10:32Speaker 3: make a strong push here. And do they have the
- 10:35Speaker 3: starting pitching necessary Well, not the way they did with Wheeler,
- 10:39Speaker 3: but yes, in my opinion, they.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Still do ken a little off the radar here. I
- 10:44Speaker 4: just want to ask you this. You're from Baltimore. The
- 10:47Speaker 4: Basayo contract, what does that mean for Adli Rutchman? Does
- 10:50Speaker 4: that mean he's necessarily gone? Because there's people saying, oh,
- 10:53Speaker 4: this means they've given up on Rutchmand. So what does
- 10:55Speaker 4: the Basayo contract mean for Adley Rutchman going forward?
- 10:59Speaker 3: Well, first off of AJM not from Baltimore, but I
- 11:01Speaker 3: worked there a long.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Time alive Ken, that's what that's right.
- 11:08Speaker 3: I don't believe that Rushman is in any trouble there
- 11:11Speaker 3: or anything like that. And we do not know yet
- 11:14Speaker 3: if Samuel Bisseio is a bona fide major league catcher.
- 11:17Speaker 3: There's a lot of questions about his defense. And also,
- 11:21Speaker 3: you cannot give up on Adlie Rushman, the former number
- 11:24Speaker 3: one pick in the draft off an injury. Mort's season
- 11:27Speaker 3: coming off a bad second half. I know it hasn't
- 11:30Speaker 3: been good, and it's been curious to me that this
- 11:33Speaker 3: has happened to him. This is a player, remember who
- 11:36Speaker 3: the Orioles drafted one spot ahead of Bobby wit Junior,
- 11:39Speaker 3: So he has that pedigree. He is someone that is
- 11:42Speaker 3: very much respected in the game. But at some point,
- 11:45Speaker 3: like any other player, you've got to perform. The real
- 11:49Speaker 3: question might be if Rushman isn't the guy, and if
- 11:52Speaker 3: Pisiah ultimately is a first baseman DH, then what do
- 11:55Speaker 3: the Orioles do at catcher. But we're getting ahead of ourselves.
- 11:58Speaker 3: I don't expect Adlie Rush to be anywhere else next season,
- 12:01Speaker 3: and I do expect him ultimately to be a much
- 12:05Speaker 3: better player than he's shown the last year and a half.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Ken, before we let you go, how happy are you
- 12:13Speaker 4: that you're not five foot seven tall? Right now?
- 12:17Speaker 3: I'm never happy that I'm not five foot.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Seven, Jazz, I think, Hey, I heard Jazz say, heard
- 12:25Speaker 4: you say that the Yankees Red Sox wasn't the best rivalry,
- 12:28Speaker 4: So then he decided to almost kill you here in
- 12:31Speaker 4: the cameral. Don't say it wasn't close, because its fall
- 12:34Speaker 4: is really close to your face. Now you weren't looking.
- 12:37Speaker 4: You need to pay attention a little better. But look
- 12:39Speaker 4: at that Look at that Ken.
- 12:40Speaker 6: You don't even flinch, Aj.
- 12:43Speaker 3: It was a few feet away, Honestly it was. And
- 12:46Speaker 3: am I guilty or have I been guilty in the
- 12:49Speaker 3: past of not having my eyes on the field. Yes,
- 12:53Speaker 3: there have been times I took a broken finger at
- 12:55Speaker 3: ten stitches one year because I was tweeting something. And
- 12:59Speaker 3: just in the All Star Game, I'll reveal this, even
- 13:01Speaker 3: though it's rather embarrassing. A foul ball came into the
- 13:05Speaker 3: Dugout and Al the Gonzalez from ESPN was doing ESPN
- 13:08Speaker 3: Radio and I was looking down and all of them goes, dude,
- 13:12Speaker 3: that really almost hit you. And it was a pretty
- 13:14Speaker 3: screaming line drive. So yeah, it gets icy down there.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But with that particular one, I know what it looked like,
- 13:22Speaker 3: and I know there are some stuff going on with
- 13:24Speaker 3: social media, but it really wasn't that close and I
- 13:26Speaker 3: did see it.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Ken hypothetical scenario, would you take a baseball to the body,
- 13:34Speaker 1: not the head, no head injuries, right below the body
- 13:38Speaker 1: to break a big story that you were getting, like
- 13:41Speaker 1: a big trade or something like that. Would you take
- 13:44Speaker 1: the sacrifice of you know, a baseball to the arm,
- 13:46Speaker 1: to the stomach, something like that, a spot that it's
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's not gonna kill you, it's just gonna leave a
- 13:51Speaker 1: significant bruise for a while.
- 13:53Speaker 3: Scott, why would I need to do that? Like, under
- 13:56Speaker 3: what scenario would take a baseball body?
- 13:59Speaker 4: Resulted me Travis Kelcey and Taylor Swift getting engaged. You're
- 14:03Speaker 4: breaking it and you take one to the chips.
- 14:07Speaker 3: Oh, you're saying, I'm in the middle of a tweet.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah, you're in the middle of a tweet and there's
- 14:12Speaker 1: a pitch coming and you're like, hey, this just came in.
- 14:14Speaker 1: This is the biggest trade or transaction of the year.
- 14:17Speaker 1: I'm going to risk this pitch knowing that that pitch
- 14:20Speaker 1: could smoke me, And well, I've actually get hurt as
- 14:25Speaker 1: as I've.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Done it when I had the broken finger. I think
- 14:29Speaker 3: this was in twenty thirteen. It was the final broadcast
- 14:33Speaker 3: of the season. It was the Reds and the Pirates
- 14:35Speaker 3: and they were actually playing for seating in the wild
- 14:38Speaker 3: Card and that play happened in like the fourth inning.
- 14:42Speaker 3: I think I was tweeting Terry Collins got extended something
- 14:45Speaker 3: like that with the Mets, and yeah, it hurt and
- 14:48Speaker 3: there was a lot of blood and I finished the game.
- 14:51Speaker 3: Age you should know that I finished the game. And
- 14:53Speaker 3: then after the game, this is a great story. The
- 14:56Speaker 3: Reds doctor goes home, the game is in Cincinnati. They
- 14:59Speaker 3: take me to the Pilot training room to get stitched up.
- 15:02Speaker 3: The Pirates doctor is stitching me up and it hurts.
- 15:05Speaker 3: I mean, it's hurting pretty good. But Justin Morneau, Canadian
- 15:10Speaker 3: former hockey player, maybe one of the toughest players in
- 15:13Speaker 3: the game at the time, is sitting on the training table.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Aj So I'm sitting there basically wanting to cry like
- 15:19Speaker 3: a baby in scream, but I couldn't say a word.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Well, it's good, thank god, thank god it But here's
- 15:26Speaker 4: here's what I really want to know. Who did the
- 15:27Speaker 4: ball almost hit? You didn't tell the whole story? Who
- 15:30Speaker 4: did the ball almost hit? Okay, tell the whole story.
- 15:33Speaker 3: I will tell the whole story. This is the jash
- 15:35Speaker 3: chism player referring to. So the ball hit the screen
- 15:39Speaker 3: over the camera. Well, and if it had not been
- 15:43Speaker 3: a situation where there was a screen, that ball would
- 15:47Speaker 3: have hit your Novak Djokovic. He's sitting right there. You
- 15:50Speaker 3: can't really see him. He's sitting right there. It might
- 15:52Speaker 3: have caught him in their face and we would have
- 15:54Speaker 3: had a different US open. So Novak's the lucky one
- 15:58Speaker 3: really because the screen was there.
- 15:59Speaker 4: Again, but he's tall. Ken, That's why he's tall. He's tall.
- 16:02Speaker 2: Wait, whoa you guys married the lead?
- 16:05Speaker 4: Ken was supposed to tell that Ken married the lead?
- 16:07Speaker 1: S That's that's real news. I haven't seen that. Is
- 16:11Speaker 1: that known? Is that public knowledge?
- 16:13Speaker 5: I don't know?
- 16:13Speaker 4: Is now? Yeah? He said, if you watch the replay,
- 16:16Speaker 4: you can see Jokovic sitting there.
- 16:19Speaker 1: Right, But one day there there is a documentary how
- 16:23Speaker 1: one little screen saved the US Open in twenty twenty five.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I didn't know that part.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I mean, that's a notable name, and it's it's not
- 16:29Speaker 1: just a famous name, it's a name that's super relevant
- 16:32Speaker 1: to what's going on right now in sports.
- 16:34Speaker 4: Ken, think about this. If that ball hits Djokovic, then
- 16:36Speaker 4: think about how many Yankee fans are mad at Jazz.
- 16:39Speaker 4: They're not only mad about the bad throw, but then
- 16:41Speaker 4: he ruined the US Open. So then there's worldwide fans
- 16:44Speaker 4: mad at Jazz for that bad throw. So forget you.
- 16:47Speaker 4: But like, if you do watch the replay, you can
- 16:49Speaker 4: see Djokovic just sitting there and he kind of flinches. Meanwhile,
- 16:52Speaker 4: Ken just it was like this screenager.
- 16:55Speaker 1: That's what I wanted to ask because some people saw
- 16:57Speaker 1: that Ken and they were like, it's Ken stone cold
- 17:00Speaker 1: that he's just been down in the camera well so
- 17:02Speaker 1: often that he just knows where the baseball's going and
- 17:04Speaker 1: doesn't react.
- 17:05Speaker 2: It was cool. It was worth a few minutes, and
- 17:08Speaker 2: that's what.
- 17:08Speaker 3: I told you. In that situation. It just wasn't that close.
- 17:11Speaker 3: But as I said, again, making myself look bad there
- 17:15Speaker 3: have been situations where, yeah, I've had my head down.
- 17:18Speaker 4: It's not smart, Ken, Ken, what's the worst camera well
- 17:23Speaker 4: in the league? Worst camera well in the league for you.
- 17:27Speaker 3: Well, from a site perspective or just from getting into.
- 17:31Speaker 4: It, just just the worst. Like there's if someone asked
- 17:34Speaker 4: me what's the worst place to play? I have an answer,
- 17:37Speaker 4: what's the worst place? What's the best place?
- 17:39Speaker 3: The Mets and Padres City Field and Peco Park they
- 17:42Speaker 3: are difficult camera wells actually to get into. There's not
- 17:45Speaker 3: a door or anything. You got to kind of climb
- 17:47Speaker 3: into them. So from that perspective those two. Now, there
- 17:51Speaker 3: was a situation once at Fenway, since we're talking about this,
- 17:55Speaker 3: where I was protected Scott. I was behind the cameraman
- 18:00Speaker 3: right and there's a wall behind me in the camera well,
- 18:03Speaker 3: and the ball off the wall and right there, and
- 18:08Speaker 3: that was a mess. It was quite bloody. It turns
- 18:11Speaker 3: out I didn't have a concussion, but and that was
- 18:13Speaker 3: a case where I was paying attention, didn't have my
- 18:16Speaker 3: head down, was looking up and thought I was covered
- 18:20Speaker 3: and still wasn't. So, yes, it can get very dangerous
- 18:23Speaker 3: down there.
- 18:24Speaker 4: Ye, Ken trying to climb over the wall and his
- 18:28Speaker 4: legs are stuck and he's like, somebody.
- 18:30Speaker 6: Halt me. I can't get over the wall.
- 18:35Speaker 2: I could sad he was waiting, he was waiting for it.
- 18:39Speaker 2: I'm glad to.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Comment there.
- 18:43Speaker 2: Well, well you're off the hot seat.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I felt it was worth a few minutes that that
- 18:47Speaker 1: was a little st scene and I didn't know the
- 18:49Speaker 1: Djokovic part, so U we sacrificed the good stuff and
- 18:53Speaker 1: got into some time for Ken.
- 18:54Speaker 4: Right now, this was good.
- 18:55Speaker 1: This was good Ken, Thank you, and we're glad you're
- 18:58Speaker 1: in one piece. And we're glad no Djokovic is in
- 19:00Speaker 1: one piece.
- 19:01Speaker 3: Absolutely more important.

- 20:18Speaker 7: Yeah, awesome, you're used to it. I love it's got
- 20:21Speaker 7: a good ring to it. Which part is the best?
- 20:22Speaker 7: The last part? Almost pro golfers. Yeah, he just counts
- 20:26Speaker 7: a professional golf it's the pro true. But does this
- 20:29Speaker 7: this sound? Does this doesn't ruin your amateur status?
- 20:31Speaker 6: You had to sign a forum last night if you
- 20:33Speaker 6: wanted to.

- 20:35Speaker 6: Correct? Yeah? Everyone, everyone let out a sigh relief when
- 20:38Speaker 6: they heard that.
- 20:39Speaker 4: I was a kid of one who's like sixteen years
- 20:41Speaker 4: old that won this year. He was real worried. Yeah,
- 20:43Speaker 4: he was. He called me last night man signed that
- 20:45Speaker 4: for him.
- 20:46Speaker 6: I titled to say, hey, ball talk for a few minutes.
- 20:49Speaker 1: First, So what do you think about the Blue Jays
- 20:52Speaker 1: and your boy George Springer?
- 20:53Speaker 2: Happened a year?
- 20:54Speaker 6: Yeahs kill it. He's doing great.
- 20:56Speaker 8: Uh, I mean, he's just he's I just, I guess
- 21:00Speaker 8: so frustrated people when they talk about the age thing,
- 21:02Speaker 8: like because everyone ages differently. Just because he had a
- 21:05Speaker 8: tough year, right, you know, for him, a tough last
- 21:08Speaker 8: two years doesn't mean that it's his age catching up.
- 21:10Speaker 6: You know.
- 21:11Speaker 8: The baseball so validole. There could be a number of
- 21:13Speaker 8: things going on. He had had a bad elbow injury
- 21:16Speaker 8: that was coming back from, which a lot of times
- 21:19Speaker 8: puts you in bad habits with your swing, and when
- 21:22Speaker 8: you're a good player like him, it just takes a
- 21:24Speaker 8: minute to refine it once it clicks for you. I mean,
- 21:27Speaker 8: he's going off. So he's playing great. Blue Jays are
- 21:30Speaker 8: playing great. They're a fun team. The city's behind him,
- 21:32Speaker 8: the country is behind him. It's right, it's rocking in
- 21:35Speaker 8: the Rogers Center, and it's going to be exciting as
- 21:37Speaker 8: the fall gets here.
- 21:38Speaker 4: Can they do it?
- 21:40Speaker 6: Can they do that?
- 21:41Speaker 4: That's I think everyone looks at it and says, can
- 21:43Speaker 4: the Are the blue Jays one for real? Because a
- 21:45Speaker 4: lot of people don't know a lot about They don't
- 21:47Speaker 4: flat and they know they bow a little bit, but
- 21:50Speaker 4: they don't know about the rest of the guys. So
- 21:52Speaker 4: can the Blue Jays go ninety two ninety three and
- 21:56Speaker 4: win the whole thing?
- 21:56Speaker 8: They definitely can they do? I mean, I really seriously
- 21:59Speaker 8: did they Can? They just they're gonna need a couple
- 22:01Speaker 8: guys in the bullpen. This stuff up they're starting pitching
- 22:03Speaker 8: is phenomenal, maybe the best in the league now that
- 22:07Speaker 8: they got Beaver back looking like benached Beaver and some
- 22:12Speaker 8: guys in the bullpen, like like a Louis Arland. Hafey's
- 22:15Speaker 8: kind of been He's had some really good stretches and
- 22:17Speaker 8: then a couple of games that haven't haven't miss so good.
- 22:19Speaker 8: And if he could just bottle those those good stretches
- 22:22Speaker 8: and be a shutdown closer that he is a pair
- 22:25Speaker 8: with the guy like Louis Arland and some guys that
- 22:27Speaker 8: can come in and.
- 22:30Speaker 6: Make you look silly. I think they really do have
- 22:32Speaker 6: a chance, all.
- 22:33Speaker 5: Right, you're just off the field. The rhetoric right now
- 22:36Speaker 5: is any team right now that makes it to the
- 22:38Speaker 5: playoffs can't win the World Series without hitting the dingers.
- 22:41Speaker 5: But then when the team doesn't win the World Series
- 22:44Speaker 5: because they're striking out so much and they're not hitting
- 22:47Speaker 5: and they're only hitting dingers, then it's like, well they
- 22:49Speaker 5: strike out too much. Do you believe in this game
- 22:53Speaker 5: right now? Because neither me or AJ have played in
- 22:55Speaker 5: the last five years? You can win the World Series
- 22:58Speaker 5: without hitting dingers?
- 23:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean Kansas City did it in twenty fifteen. Yeah, yeah,
- 23:05Speaker 6: it doesn't seem like forever ago though, you know, I
- 23:07Speaker 6: forget that it's twenty twenty five.
- 23:09Speaker 8: But you know, when someone someone doesn't win the World
- 23:11Speaker 8: Series is because something didn't go as good as the
- 23:15Speaker 8: other teams. They either didn't score enough runs, they didn't
- 23:17Speaker 8: pitch as well, they didn't put as many balls in play.
- 23:21Speaker 8: So anyone that doesn't win, obviously something didn't happen to
- 23:25Speaker 8: keep them from winning. So you're always pulling fingers. You
- 23:27Speaker 8: can always say things, but it's sports, you know, it's
- 23:31Speaker 8: you gotta do. You gotta do everything right at the
- 23:33Speaker 8: right time if you want to win a championship. And
- 23:35Speaker 8: that's so different than any than basketball. All we didn't
- 23:37Speaker 8: make enough threes, well, yeah, because other team made more.
- 23:39Speaker 8: And it's just it's just part of it. And people
- 23:43Speaker 8: just like to complain.
- 23:44Speaker 4: And now that you're a media member, you'll get used
- 23:46Speaker 4: to complaining because you have the double wam. You played
- 23:48Speaker 4: baseball and your media members, so you've created complaining. Both
- 23:51Speaker 4: of those are great jobs at complain. Yeah, I'm just
- 23:53Speaker 4: gonna teach you some you don't score enough runs and
- 23:55Speaker 4: the other team scores more, you lose, like every time,
- 23:57Speaker 4: So just keep that in mind.
- 23:59Speaker 6: Yeah, just keep that of mine. Yep, going forward.
- 24:01Speaker 4: That if you don't score every runs, you usually don't.
- 24:03Speaker 6: Win at least at least ninety games. Score enough.
- 24:06Speaker 2: That's media one, O one.
- 24:08Speaker 1: What about the Phillies, So you know, we just saw
- 24:11Speaker 1: the loss of Zach Wheeler for the rest of the season,
- 24:14Speaker 1: which is really tough with them. They have a great
- 24:16Speaker 1: rotation anyway, but what do you think about their chances?
- 24:18Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean it's that that's just a that's a
- 24:21Speaker 8: real punch in the gut just because as good as
- 24:24Speaker 8: he's been, he's just the steady Eddie. Especially in the playoffs,
- 24:28Speaker 8: you just know what you're gonna get when Wheeler goes
- 24:30Speaker 8: out there, and it's he's he's the guy. And really,
- 24:33Speaker 8: there's nobody if I'm if I got a playoff game
- 24:36Speaker 8: I need to win, there's nobody I would rather have
- 24:38Speaker 8: out there than Zach Wheeler.
- 24:39Speaker 6: And so that's you know, that's that's that sucks.
- 24:42Speaker 8: A guy like that goes down, and but they have
- 24:45Speaker 8: the guys that that can that can step in and
- 24:48Speaker 8: pick them up.
- 24:48Speaker 6: Sanc she's having an incredible year.
- 24:50Speaker 8: Uh Nola's bad getting healthy, and you know you got
- 24:54Speaker 8: you got Ranger who's who's also been really studying the postseason.
- 24:57Speaker 8: So you got guys that can that just need to
- 24:59Speaker 8: step up and take over that role, and they have
- 25:01Speaker 8: the guys that can do it. And then you got
- 25:04Speaker 8: a banging offense and and now you got Duran coming
- 25:07Speaker 8: in with the spy entrance, and so you don't want
- 25:10Speaker 8: to get to the ninth when being down and all.
- 25:13Speaker 4: Right, so Blue Jays Phillies World Series, who are you rooting for?
- 25:16Speaker 4: That'd be electric, that would be like, that would be amazing.
- 25:18Speaker 4: The Electric three right when they had the last one. Yeah,
- 25:21Speaker 4: it was here a home run in that series. It
- 25:23Speaker 4: worked out, it'd be good.
- 25:24Speaker 6: I wouldn't I wouldn't have a rooting interest, but I'm
- 25:26Speaker 6: such a liar. Well, Philly did boom me more than.
- 25:32Speaker 8: But I mean, I still have friends that I talked
- 25:35Speaker 8: to daily on both teams, and that would be the
- 25:37Speaker 8: see and probably get ticke us for easily those games.
- 25:42Speaker 6: So that's true. I would enjoy that.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Did you see the motivating pre aim speech from Manfred
- 25:49Speaker 1: a few weeks ago?
- 25:50Speaker 8: I heard I was getting filled in a game. I
- 25:51Speaker 8: was getting filled in a little bit last night about it, yekes.
- 25:55Speaker 8: I really wish, I really wish I could have hung
- 25:58Speaker 8: on another year and just just to be a part
- 26:00Speaker 8: of that, just to have heard that.
- 26:01Speaker 2: But historic.
- 26:02Speaker 1: What do you think about the commissioner coming in for
- 26:04Speaker 1: a conversation like that before a game during the season.
- 26:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, I know, I know Rob trying to
- 26:10Speaker 8: trying to to mend the bridges of player relations and
- 26:15Speaker 8: trying to get in better graces with some of the players.
- 26:18Speaker 8: And I don't know if I mean a lot of
- 26:21Speaker 8: especially an older team like Philly like so those guys
- 26:23Speaker 8: are so routine oriented. I don't know if pregame is
- 26:26Speaker 8: the best time to do it, but you know what
- 26:28Speaker 8: else are you gonna be?
- 26:29Speaker 6: Is everybody gonna be together? So I get it in
- 26:31Speaker 6: that sense.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Did he do though, or any years that you were playing,
- 26:35Speaker 1: he would come pregame from one meeting yep?
- 26:37Speaker 2: And how did it go?
- 26:38Speaker 6: Uh? Not as bad as that?
- 26:43Speaker 1: What was he was he saying, hey, I want to
- 26:45Speaker 1: make the relationship better or was he getting into topics
- 26:48Speaker 1: where guys were like, okay, this is you know, collective
- 26:51Speaker 1: bargaining right before we're gonna play a game.
- 26:54Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean that that's how it started. Just you know, hey, guys,
- 26:56Speaker 8: I'm here to you know, we gotta this. Last CBA
- 26:59Speaker 8: didn't go well. I want it to be better. I
- 27:01Speaker 8: want better relationship with the players, which I agree with it,
- 27:03Speaker 8: you know, needs to be better. Sure, now I think
- 27:06Speaker 8: they're closer to the CBA, so there might be more
- 27:08Speaker 8: conversation of this is what we want and this is
- 27:10Speaker 8: why we think it's important for our game, and this
- 27:13Speaker 8: is what the ownership wants and so we're gonna this
- 27:16Speaker 8: is what's gonna happen.
- 27:18Speaker 6: And certain teams you can say that too.
- 27:21Speaker 8: Philadelphia Phillies are not that team, and I think they
- 27:24Speaker 8: made it known that we this is We're gonna stand
- 27:27Speaker 8: by what we want and you're not gonna come in
- 27:29Speaker 8: here and say anything different to us in our clubhouse,
- 27:31Speaker 8: especially
