- 0:10Hello friends, it's shown here. It is the 2nd of September.
- 0:16It is springtime in this part of the world.
- 0:19Happy spring to you, or autumn if you're far away.
- 0:23But here we go. This, this is looking good.
- 0:25This is the time of the year when things start to thaw out.
- 0:27Unless you're in Tasmania, in which case, well, that's really
- 0:31October. September's just kind of a, a
- 0:33rude month that you expect things to get warm in a it
- 0:36really doesn't, but that's OK. We know that in the fullness of
- 0:40time, summer will come. So in the meantime, we will
- 0:44enjoy the month of September. It is the second.
- 0:47It is the beginning of a whole new book.
- 0:50Well, this is a continuation of the previous book.
- 0:52So we just finished reading the the letter of First Corinthians
- 0:56that Paul writes to the church in Corinth.
- 0:58And today we begin Second Corinthians.
- 1:02And, well, there is a bunch of scholarly debate about Second
- 1:05Corinthians. Most scholars tend to agree that
- 1:08it's probably a number of letters which have been edited
- 1:12together into this letter of Second Corinthians.
- 1:15So as we're reading through it, you might think, my goodness,
- 1:17the tone is changing pretty fast.
- 1:19You know, Paul's a pretty switchable character.
- 1:22Well, that may be the case, but more likely the truth is that
- 1:25this was a combination of different letters that were
- 1:28brought together as the editors thought, how do we communicate
- 1:31the word of God most clearly in a book that we can add to our
- 1:36Bible and canonise it? And this is what we have.
- 1:39And you will hear as we read through that, a lot of what he
- 1:44is trying to address is his legitimacy as an apostle.
- 1:49So history will tell us that not long after he wrote First
- 1:52Corinthians, he went back to the church in Corinth.
- 1:55And it seems like he had a really difficult encounter with
- 1:59someone who was really critical of Paul and his role as an
- 2:03apostle, which unfortunately led to a relationship breakdown.
- 2:06And since that time he has left and there has been communication
- 2:13from the church saying that they realised that they should have
- 2:15acted differently and they've apologised to Paul and Paul then
- 2:20responds. So there is lots going on, lots
- 2:23of relational challenges, lots of legitimacy challenges and of
- 2:27course all the way through that Paul is just wanting to affirm
- 2:31that it is through Jesus and his power that things are
- 2:35transformed. So how about let's get down to
- 2:38it, shall we? Let us, you and me, read
- 2:40together Second Corinthians chapter 1.
- 2:52This letter is from Paul, chosen by the will of God to be an
- 2:56apostle of Christ Jesus, and from our brother Timothy.
- 3:00I'm writing to God's church in Corinth and to all of his holy
- 3:04people throughout Greece. May God our Father and the Lord
- 3:08Jesus Christ give you grace and peace.
- 3:13All praise to God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- 3:17God is our merciful Father and the source of all comfort.
- 3:22He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort
- 3:25others. When they are troubled.
- 3:27We will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
- 3:32For the more we suffer for Christ, the more God will shower
- 3:35us with His comfort through Christ, even when we are weighed
- 3:39down with troubles. It is for your comfort and
- 3:42salvation, for when we ourselves are comforted, we will certainly
- 3:47comfort you. Then you can patiently endure
- 3:51the same things we suffer. We are confident that you share
- 3:54in our sufferings. You will also share in the
- 3:57comfort God gives us. We think you ought to know, dear
- 4:02brothers and sisters, about the trouble we went through in the
- 4:04province of Asia. We were crushed and overwhelmed
- 4:08beyond our ability to endure, and we thought we would never
- 4:11live through it. In fact, we expected to die.
- 4:15But as a result, we stopped relying on ourselves and learn
- 4:19to rely only on God who raises the dead.
- 4:23And He did rescue us from mortal danger, and He will rescue us
- 4:27again. We have placed our confidence in
- 4:30Him and He will continue to rescue us.
- 4:34And you are helping us by praying for us.
- 4:37Then many people will give thanks because God has
- 4:40graciously answered so many prayers for our safety.
- 4:45We can say with confidence and a clear conscience that we have
- 4:49lived with a God given holiness and sincerity in all our
- 4:53dealings. We have depended on God's grace,
- 4:57not on our own human wisdom. That is how we have conducted
- 5:01ourselves before the world and especially towards you.
- 5:04Our letters have been straightforward and there is
- 5:08nothing written between the lines and nothing you can't
- 5:11understand. I hope someday you will fully
- 5:14understand us. Even if you don't understand us
- 5:17now, then on the day when the Lord Jesus returns, you will be
- 5:21proud of us in the same way we are proud of you.
- 5:26Since I was so sure of your understanding and trust, I
- 5:29wanted to give you a double blessing by visiting you twice,
- 5:33first on my way to Macedonia and again when I returned from
- 5:36Macedonia. Then you could see me on my way
- 5:39to Judea. You may be asking why I change
- 5:42my plan. Do you think I make my plans
- 5:45carelessly? Do you think I'm like people of
- 5:48the world who say yes when they really mean no?
- 5:52As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver
- 5:56between yes and no. For Jesus Christ, the Son of
- 6:00God, does not waver between yes and no.
- 6:03He is the one whom Silas, Timothy and I preached to you.
- 6:07And as God's ultimate yes, He always does what He says.
- 6:12For all of God's promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a
- 6:16resounding yes. And through Christ, our Amen,
- 6:21which means yes, ascends to God for His glory.
- 6:26It is God who enables us, along with you, to stand firm for
- 6:30Christ. He has commissioned us and He
- 6:34has identified us as His own by placing the Holy Spirit in our
- 6:38hearts as the first instalment that guarantees everything He
- 6:42has promised us. Now I call upon God as my
- 6:46witness that I'm telling the truth.
- 6:49The reason I didn't return to Corinth was to spare you from a
- 6:53severe rebuke. But that does not mean we want
- 6:56to dominate you by telling you how to put your faith into
- 6:59practise. We want to work together with
- 7:02you so you will be full of joy. For it is by your own faith that
- 7:07you stand firm. Oh Jesus, we certainly
- 7:20understand that life is complex, that our relationships are
- 7:23complex. We know that even when we have
- 7:27relationships with others who love you, it doesn't mean that
- 7:30things are going to be straightforward.
- 7:33But we see in this opening from Paul that when you give us your
- 7:39Holy Spirit, that is a deposit, that what is imperfect now in
- 7:45your revelation to us will be made perfect in time.
- 7:48And so we look forward to a time when your Spirit will spill out
- 7:54throughout us and it will transform us completely, that
- 7:58together, shoulder to shoulder, we will stand before you in
- 8:01absolute worship and adoration. And so we look forward to that
- 8:06time when all the niggles of relationships right now will
- 8:11pale in comparison to the glory that we will be exposed to in
- 8:15you, our glorious God, our mighty King, and our generous
- 8:21Saviour. We love you and we worship you
- 8:24above all else. And we pray all of this in your
- 8:27name, Jesus, Amen.
