- 1:38and the title is the Spring Street Game. Ladies and gentlemen, the
- 1:53story you're about to hear is true, only the names have been changed to
- 1:59a protect the innocent drag Net. You're a detective sergeant. You're assigned to
- 2:14Juvenile Bureau. A rash of crimes is broken out in your city. Suspicion
- 2:20points to an organized gang of juveniles. Your job stop them. Drag Net
- 2:28the documented drama of an actual crime. For the next thirty minutes, in
- 2:31cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department, you will travel step by step on
- 2:37the side of the law through an actual case from official police files, from
- 2:40beginning to end, from crime to punishment. Drag Net is the story of
- 2:46your police force in action. It was Sunday, March twenty seventh, was
- 2:53windy in Los Angeles. We're working a night watch out of Georgia Street Juvenile
- 2:57Bureau. My partner's Ben Romero, the boss, a backstrand Chief of Detectives.
- 3:00My name is Friday. I was on the way up from the Juvenile
- 3:04Bureau and it was eleven twenty five PM when I got to the receiving Hospital
- 3:07room five, the treatment room. Everything happens on Sunday night, said Joe.
- 3:14Yeah, I was the kid making out dick. One arm is cut
- 3:16up badly, nothing fatal, though, How did it happen? That's what
- 3:20I like to find out when I talked to him. If you want,
- 3:23don't press him though. He's had a bad shot. All right, officer
- 3:36here to talk to you, so I can't tell him. I can't talk.
- 3:40Please, just a few routine questions saying we're gonna have to answer him
- 3:44sooner or later. Please, can't you see what's happened already? I can't
- 3:49tell you anything. Jack Monroe, is that's your real name? Yeah?
- 3:53How old are you? There'll be sixteen next July? Where do you live?
- 3:57I can't tell you. You know that now? Let me alone?
- 4:00Let me alone. You've been running around to that gang of kids on Spring
- 4:02Street, haven't you? The big timers? Isn't that what they call themselves.
- 4:06I don't know anything about it. Believe me, I can't talk.
- 4:10You tipped us off about the burglary they were going to pull tonight? Is
- 4:13that where they knifed you? Look? Would you believe me? I can't
- 4:15tell you anything, not anything. He's still shaky though. All right,
- 4:21well, Jack, we'll talk about it later. When you feel better.
- 4:25You see what they've done to me already, they said, next time they
- 4:28kill me. Chiven will Bureau Friday, Yeah, yeah, okay, friend,
- 4:46goodbye, I have to make out. Joe not very good. Ben,
- 4:50Captain Bulling come in yet? You checked him while you were going and
- 4:53wants to see it. Okay. I can't tell you who knafed him.
- 4:57No, I scared him good. He wouldn't tell me a thing. You
- 5:00get a line on the boy's parents Friday. He got ahold of his father.
- 5:03He's on his way in. How's the boy? Bad? Knife wounds,
- 5:06nothing fatal, you know, the boy? Nothing less? Afternoons camping,
- 5:10he tipped herself about a burglary. A gang of young kids were supposed
- 5:13to pull to nine go through No. But two hours ago this Monroe kid
- 5:16was founding a vacant lot down on the Olympic, cut up pretty bad.
- 5:19The gang must have paid him. How long is it going to take you
- 5:21to break that up? Were just starting to get a line on him,
- 5:25Bob. It must be nearly one hundred in that gang and everyone I'm working
- 5:28hard. Take a look at the couldn't map over here, that spot here,
- 5:33look at it all the jobs pulled during the last month time, last
- 5:38five weeks up to date. Red tabs for burglary must be one one hundred
- 5:42robbery's green pins count them at least fifty. There's five more orange ones I
- 5:46added for the weekend auto tests. You bet those kids are working hard and
- 5:49got a lead on him this morning. We had last week. You have
- 5:53to push it harder. Here's the big reason this line of pins brown and
- 5:58black purse snatchings first snatching right, twenty six of them in the past five
- 6:00weeks. They're pretty well concentrated in one area here, that's right. What's
- 6:05the leads you're working on right there on the pin map, gab huh Oh
- 6:09these two blocks here, Bob, where Franco Alley intersects Spring Street. What
- 6:13about it? Well, it's the only clear area for a dozen blocks around.
- 6:15There's not a colored pin on it, you see. Yeah. Now,
- 6:18all the rest of the pins, the robberies, burglaries attacks, they
- 6:23all seem to branch out from this same spot right here, in definite patterns
- 6:26Franco Alley and Spring Street. You figure that's the focal point for the game.
- 6:30Man's got all the mark. For instance, Oh, we've been checking
- 6:32that neighborhood for a week. We got it narrowed down to one place right
- 6:35in the corner of Franco and Spring. What is it? It's a soda
- 6:39Funta's pretty typical, only it stays open all night and it gets a pretty
- 6:43good play from kids Forregner hang out captain. Pretty tough youngsters, none of
- 6:46them over eighteen. Who runs the place? Guy named Eddie Ramsey, small
- 6:49time con man. Had a run in with him when we worked Bunco detail.
- 6:53I remember the name. Smart mouth tried to give his trouble when we
- 6:56talked to some kids in there last night. He's got a place out of
- 6:59port in the back of the store, kind of a clubroom. It sounds
- 7:00like a good lead. What are you doing about it? Well, in
- 7:03just a minute, cott'n bully, Yeah, who, We'll be right down.
- 7:12Monroe kid, his father's downstairs cursing every one of us. What's his
- 7:15brother can't understand how his boy got into trouble? Come on, Ben,
- 7:18let's tell him. What kind of a city do we have when we can't
- 7:27allow our children out on the street without being stamped a shop? What's our
- 7:30great police force doing when this is going on? I'd like an answer.
- 7:33If you got well, I command an answer. We got an answer for
- 7:35you, mister Monroe. When you sit down, my boys lying in there
- 7:39in that hospital bed cut to pieces, What did you do to prevent it?
- 7:42Tell me you tell us, mister Monroe, what do you do to
- 7:45prevent him? I'm no cock. That's your job. I pay my taxes,
- 7:47lie, I'll pay yours. Hal Ray, we look out for your
- 7:49kids, but we don't raise them. Next, talking about just a minute,
- 7:51mister Monroe, answer me. This whole is your son Jack. He's
- 7:56sixteen. I think, why you know what he does with his spare time
- 7:59he spent? Of course I do. He's at home. Some nights he
- 8:01goes to the library. Then you don't know much about your son, mister
- 8:05Monroe. For the past month, four nights out of five, he's been
- 8:07hanging around with a gang down on a soda funtain on Spring Street. He's
- 8:09down there as late as two am, he says, he goes to the
- 8:11library. How do I know, I'm a busy man. Did you know
- 8:15that your son is mixed up with that gang? He's not mixed up with
- 8:16that gang. A bunch of small time thieves, but they're growing. I
- 8:20started with perse snatching, breaking in park cars, burglarizing candy. Story,
- 8:24you don't know what you'll talk Wait a minute, please, And then they
- 8:26took up robbery, stealing cars, beating up girls, women, attacking him.
- 8:28Oh crazy. Jack's not that car. He's part of that gang,
- 8:31and right now we hold all of them responsible. My boy, he wouldn't
- 8:35do anything like that. He's a member of that gang. He told us
- 8:37they're the ones that knaffed him tonight. That's a lie. Jack's not mixed
- 8:41up with anything like that. You believe anything you want, mister Monroe.
- 8:43We're gonna protect your boy as much as we can, but don't expect us
- 8:46to raise him for you. You better take a free piece of advice.
- 8:48You'll keep your advice. Jack's not in this. You can't prove he is.
- 8:52We're not out to prove anything right now, but you catch up with
- 8:54that boy yours. Keep him off the streets before it's too late. Are
- 8:58you threatening me? Ser advising you? Next time? We might meet at
- 9:01the Morgue one am Monday, March twenty eighth, a detail of fifty officers
- 9:11from Juvenile Bureau and Metropolitan Division were deployed for sixteen blocks along figure Ross Street.
- 9:16At five minutes past one, they started to move south over an appointed
- 9:18area. In the space of half an hour, eighteen young kids, none
- 9:22of them over seventeen years old, were picked up off the streets and brought
- 9:26to the second floor at thirteen thirty five Georgia Street the Juvenile Bureau. Four
- 9:30of the youngsters were girls. At one forty five am, then and I
- 9:33checked the soda fountain on the corner of Franco Alley and Spring Street. Same
- 9:43lunch, Joe. It's a huge Yeah. Come on, hey, Teddy
- 9:48the pose. They're back again. Same guys, We're back in. Call
- 9:52Edny. Hey, Look, why do you guys have to keep tracking us?
- 9:56Huh? You think we were crooks or something the last time we checked
- 10:00in? Teddy? You ever go home? Sure? When I'm tired.
- 10:03I ain't tired. What's the matter? That's your money on the table there?
- 10:07Sure, it's my money. Do you want to borrow a buck?
- 10:11Twenty eight dollars? That's a lot of money for a boy your a You
- 10:13keep pretty late hours, son, You have to go to school in the
- 10:16morning. Maybe I can sit here, can I? It's free country?
- 10:20I'm drinking coffee. You gotta make me on that you've been drinking more than
- 10:24coffee. Where's your driver's license? Every time? The same thing there March
- 10:31tenth, nineteen thirty three, sixteen years old. They giving you a trouble.
- 10:35Ted Eddie's on his way out. What's your name? Jones? Clyde
- 10:39Jones? Ho Ted? Sure he's got money too, rich family. You
- 10:43can save the smart talk boys, any of your pals in the back room.
- 10:46What's the trouble now, sogeant? How many times a week do we
- 10:50get a check? Go ahead, Eddie read them off. We told you
- 10:52the last time, Ramsay, clean up your place here, we'll ride.
- 10:54You're back to the doo. I told you the last time, Sergeant.
- 10:58There's nothing wrong with my place. It's almost two o'clock in the morning.
- 11:01You've got a dozen underage kids hanging around here doing nothing. Some of them
- 11:03have been drinking school boys. Better to have them in here than hanging around
- 11:07outside in the street. I keep an eye on them. You're not to
- 11:09Guardian Ramsey this time of night. They've got no business in here or on
- 11:13us straight alone. It's your opinion, eh, that's the law of Ramsey.
- 11:18Now either you shut down that back room and keep these kids out of
- 11:20here late at night, or we'll go after your license. You don't scam
- 11:22me, sogiant. You can't prove a thing. A couple of these kids
- 11:26have juvenile records, are on probation. We can tag you for contributing.
- 11:30You still don't scam me. Now, why don't you leave the kids alone?
- 11:33Try Eddie read them off, ben Get Benson and Bell Roger. If
- 11:37you won't clean up your place, Ramsey will do it for you. Yeah,
- 11:39what are you gonna do. We're pulling these boys in, all of
- 11:41them. Two twenty five am Monday, March twenty eighth the Dragonet operation that
- 11:50netted thirty juveniles twenty six boys, four girls. Twenty four of the children
- 11:54were between the ages of sixteen and seventeen. They were lodged in the assembly
- 11:58room with the Street Juvenile Bureau. The other half dozen were thirteen and fifteen
- 12:03year olds. They were taken to the Juvenile Hall at thirteen sixty nine Henry
- 12:07Street. At two forty three am, we met with Captain Bulling Oh Jack
- 12:09Dan thirty eight. All right. In the morning, we filed petitions to
- 12:13have every one of these cases brought to the attention of the juvenile court.
- 12:16Make a note of it, okay, Bob, But the kids with records
- 12:18ask for detention from the probation department. Right we call their parents in the
- 12:22morning. Call them now, they've got some explaining to do. By six
- 12:28am, all but three of the children's parents had shown up, so most
- 12:31of them it was nothing new. Their kids had been there before, they'd
- 12:33be there again. They took the lecture from the juvenile officers calmly. As
- 12:37long as it didn't mean trouble for them, They wouldn't worry. When they
- 12:41got their children home, they would reprimand them, not for running the streets,
- 12:43but for being picked up by the police men. And I had seen
- 12:46the cycle of the young criminals start before one hundred times over. It had
- 12:50a lot of different endings, most of them solur. During the next week
- 12:56that followed, we booked an average of a dozen juvenile delinquents every night they
- 12:58clamped downtinue. So did the crime wave. Ton burglaries, four umberries,
- 13:03eight karthief's, six person matchings, three assaults on women. One week's work
- 13:07picked up a new angle on Ramsey to day Captain, he might be fencing
- 13:11for the game. Who gave you the tip off? One of our informants.
- 13:15Ramsey's brother lives out in the valley. He's supposed to be pushing this
- 13:18stuff. You check him out. Yeah, I couldn't get a thing on
- 13:20him, and might explain what attracts the kids to that soda funtain. He
- 13:24explains those twenty dollars bills. The kids are flashing and they stealing rob and
- 13:26then they sell allude to Ramsey for nothing and another thing. Ramsey keeps his
- 13:31place open all night. And there's no reason too. He doesn't get that
- 13:33much trade. It's only from the young gang and hangs around there. You
- 13:35question the kids, how do they account for having all that money? Well,
- 13:39most of them say Ramsey lends it to them. They say they pay
- 13:41him back a little at a time. I think he's fencing for the kids.
- 13:45You try to get his license, No luck, Captain. We can't
- 13:48prove a thing against him, and we'll do it the hard way. Sweat
- 13:50it out. That night, we drove out to ramsey soda fountain and asked
- 13:56him again to clean up his place, to keep the young kid out after
- 14:00ten o'clock at night, to stop lending them money. He refused. There
- 14:03was nothing we could do. His business was a public place. He could
- 14:07not be held responsible for any of his patrons. In the next ten days
- 14:11that followed, Ben and I haunted the sidewalk outside the soda fountain. We
- 14:13questioned every youngster as they entered and left. We made more than a dozen
- 14:18arrests. Many of the kids had been drinking heavily. We found some of
- 14:20them under the influence of narcotics, but Ramsey was still in the clear.
- 14:24The crime wave continued sporadically. Ben and I waited for our chance. It
- 14:28was a long time coming. Thursday, April fourteenth, we had dinner at
- 14:33Johnny Kochin's place and it was ten thirty five pm when we checked back in
- 14:35at the office. Ought Jock grab at you a terminal in Market Street A
- 14:41four fifty nine and shooting a terminal in Market Street A four fifteen. I
- 14:46let's go. He was approximately five feet four inches tall, one hundred and
- 14:56twenty five pounds, brown hair, brown eyes, white build, fair complexion.
- 15:01He was wearing blue jeans and a corduroy jacket. We found him between
- 15:05a row of packing cases at the rear of the warehouse at Terminal on Market
- 15:09Streets. There was a single bullet hole on his forehead, just above the
- 15:11left eye. There was a thirty eight revolver near his right hand. The
- 15:16watchman told us how it happened. She broke in the back of the warehouse,
- 15:20Sergeant. She wanted to shoot it out with me. Here's his ID
- 15:22card fell out of his pocket. Teddy Cameron, age fifteen, A kid.
- 15:31I didn't know Sajan. He didn't either. He thought he was grown
- 15:35up. You are listening to dragnet for the solution to an actual case.
- 15:48From official police files, Los Angeles Police Department formed three eleven dead body report
- 16:15type gunshot dr number four three seven six nine five. Victim Theodore Cameron.
- 16:25Residence address nine six zero Charter Street. Date and time of death Thursday,
- 16:33April fourteenth, ten thirty five pm, Place Terterminaline, Market Streets, South
- 16:41State Warehouse. Cause of death, gunshot, motive or reason attempted burglary time
- 16:52discovered ten forty pm. Removed to Cowley Morgue. Discovered by Carl Hi,
- 17:03a night watchman identified by Barbara Cameron sister. Description of victim mail Caucasian,
- 17:15age fifteen, height right so I was a occupation student The Scent English and
- 17:26was a witness signed Joe Friday, Surreal Lumber twenty two eighty eight, age
- 17:33fifteen. Right at Joe and Cameron boys. Sister, she's waiting in the
- 17:45next room. Yeah, let's go. She's taking it hard. Yeah borning,
- 17:56Miss Cameron. Good, mind you along. Get a few routine questions,
- 18:02Yes, sir as Cameron, how many other in your family? There
- 18:04were three of us, Teddy, Mike and me, mother and father.
- 18:08Did I work? Teddy and Mike go to school? I mean, Mike,
- 18:15how old is your brother Mike, Miss Camra, he's fourteen. You're
- 18:18the sole support of your two brothers. Yes. Do you have any idea
- 18:22who the boys were? Your brother Ted used to run around with. I
- 18:25don't know them by name. I remember seeing a couple of them once or
- 18:29twice. Mike could know. I think he and Ted were pretty close brothers.
- 18:34Do you know if Ted mixed with a gang of kids down on Spring
- 18:37Street, maybe Mike could know that Sergeant Teddy wasn't a bad boy, He
- 18:44wasn't a bum, none of us are. I tried to raise the boys,
- 18:48like Ma told me, it was neaty. We made out yes,
- 18:53I understand Miss Cameron didn't have too much, but we got by. Yeah,
- 19:00I figured on getting married. I'm thirty one. Be good for the
- 19:03boy, especially Teddy. He's dead, isn't it. Yeah. I couldn't
- 19:15be in two places at once, hold a job and watch the kids.
- 19:21That's why I thought maybe your husband. I'm sorry to press, Miss Cameron.
- 19:23Do you think your brother Mike can tell us about that Spring Street game?
- 19:26I'm miked. Now, where can we find him? Staying in a
- 19:30friend's house? I got the address in my bag. Yeah, that's two,
- 19:37five, one four, I know right numbers too. Well. Thank
- 19:41you, Miss Cameron. You've been very helpful. I'll get somebody to drive
- 19:42you home. How do I have to go? I wouldn't be all right
- 19:47if I just sit here for a while. I'm all right. I'm tired,
- 19:52real tired. Twenty five to fourteen west of Ranald Street. That was
- 19:59the address Barbara Cameron had given us. Was the home of mister and missus
- 20:03Jean Brewer High School friends of the Dead boys sister. We talked to Mike
- 20:07Cameron. He told us that his brother Teddy had been running around with a
- 20:10gang down on Spring Street. He identified Ramsey Soda fountains to hangout. It
- 20:12was two twenty five pm when we got back to Georgia Street. Juvenile Bureau,
- 20:17I guy, juven Gurerol Romero. Yeah, hold on our car here,
- 20:25Joe, Thanks Friday, Joel. This is Canfield in Burglary. Yeah,
- 20:30Homer, you work in that Cameron case, aren't you. Yeah.
- 20:33I just got a report on one you might be interested in out of the
- 20:36same neighborhood. Distillery, Prowl. What do you got on it? It
- 20:38was like a juvenile lamb all they got away with seven cases of Scotch whiskey.
- 20:41Expensive stuff. Okay, we'll hop on it. Bu Beck Warehouse Crocker
- 20:45at seventh. Miss Elizabeth Rice was the auditor in charge at the Bubeck Warehouse.
- 20:52We located her on the mezzanine office row. Was her job to keep
- 20:56a running inventory on all incoming and outgoing liquor stock. Our job, well,
- 21:00as you know, Sergeant Friday. Each and every bottle of distilled spirits
- 21:04carries a United States Internal Revenue stamp, Yes, ma'am. Each stamp carries
- 21:10a serial number, together with the name of the firm to whom the stamps
- 21:12are issued. Well, Miss Rice and the stuff is missing. The stamp
- 21:15on each bottle carries the case numbers. That right, that's right? Now?
- 21:19What did I tell you? Oh? Yes, I have it right
- 21:22here. Seven cases of high grade blended scout switzkey. Now I have a
- 21:27bottle identical to those in the missing cases. Yes, I see. Now,
- 21:32if you'll just look here, Yes, ma'am, the number on this
- 21:37stamp here three six eight two two, seven, nine nine five six,
- 21:41followed by the firm name. Could you give us the numbers of the stolen
- 21:44cases? I have them typed out, so you're right here. Seven cases,
- 21:48twelve bottles to the case, Canada Dry Incorporated, four of the red
- 21:53label and three of the black label. Johnny Walker, all right, thank
- 21:56you very much, Miss Ryah. And you think that this it's not be
- 22:00a juvenile case, sergeant, Yes, ma'am. We do seven cases as
- 22:03close to six hundred dollars, isn't it. We've lost a great deal more
- 22:07than that, sergeant. The insurance company makes up for the liquor loss,
- 22:11yes, ma'am. Those youngsters who makes up for them. Ben and I
- 22:19left the Bubeck warehouse with a list of serial numbers of the seven cases of
- 22:22stolen liquor. We headed back for the Juvenile Bureau. We figured that there
- 22:26was a strong possibility that the Spring Street Gang was responsible for the warehouse liquor
- 22:30theft. How were they disposing of the stolen property? That was the key
- 22:34question we had to answer. Ben and I had a hunch and a tip
- 22:37from an informant that the Young Gang was operating under the guidance of a fence
- 22:41a man or woman whose job it is to dispose of stolen property. The
- 22:45gang members were close to Ramsey at the Soda fountain. Ramsey was the logical
- 22:48suspect, all right, And I suppose they did steal the liquor. Suppose
- 22:52Ramsey's offense. What's he done with his deff I don't think he's turned it
- 22:56this fast. If he's turned it at all, he wouldn't give it at
- 22:57the soda fountain, no let, and we've been around too much. We
- 23:02wouldn't keep it in his house. He lives in the rear of the fountain.
- 23:04It's too hot. Only leaves one other location that we know about his
- 23:08brother's place in the valley. It was five minutes to ten when we turned
- 23:15the left off Ventura Boulevard, on the suppulvitor. Ramsey's brother had a small
- 23:18farm. About a mile and a half off the highway was a modest white
- 23:22frame house planeted squarely in the center of an acre of ground. An unpaved
- 23:26driveway led off to the left of the house to the garage. Pull up
- 23:29here. Huh yeah, okay, it looks kind of quiet. And no,
- 23:33lie, let's go all right, mud sticks to everything. Where's the
- 23:44doorbell? Oh? Here it is. You got your flashlight. Yeah,
- 23:49there's a note. Somebody left. Oh it's on the bomb again. Here
- 23:55strike them back? Thank you. We hold it a little closer. Can
- 24:00you read it? Yeah, Harry, wife and I have gone to the
- 24:04drive in theater. Before you put the truck away. Get three Can you
- 24:08hold that match closer? Oh not, wait a minute, yeah, get
- 24:14three cases out of the garage and take them into town. D is waiting.
- 24:18Please try to make it by eleven thirty tonight. Let's see signed George
- 24:22the addresses here, and there's a garage. Yeah, come on, three
- 24:29cases could be eggs, Joe. If it is, we wasted a trip.
- 24:38Oh, I'm out of matches, Joe. Here here's mine. What
- 24:45was that checking? Come on? See anything no, there goes a lot
- 24:53just to mend us striking you can save your matches. We found it.
- 25:02We found five cases of Scotch whiskey on the floor of the garage. We
- 25:04checked the serial numbers against the warehouse list. They matched. We went back
- 25:08to the car and called communications. We had an immediate stakeout placed on George
- 25:11Ramsey's place, and then we headed back for the city. It was eleven
- 25:15twenty pm when we got to the address. We found on the note it's
- 25:21about time, Harry. Hello Ramsey. We can do without the music.
- 25:26What's your problem this time? You're almost out of Scotch Ramsey serial numbers check

- 25:49other two cases? You drik them here? I gave it to the kids
- 25:55and you're looking at me like that for side anything wrong? Any partieskid?
- 26:07The story you have just heard was true, only the names were changed to
- 26:12protect the innocent. On June fifth, nineteen forty nine, trial was held
- 26:18in Superior Court Department seventy four, City and County of Los Angeles, State
- 26:22of California. In a moment the results of that trial, Edward and George
- 26:25Ramsay were tried and convicted in Superior Court of receiving stolen property. After serving
- 26:30their terms as prescribed by law, in the state penitentiary, they will be
- 26:33returned to the County jail where they will serve a one year term for contributing
- 26:37to the delinquency of miners. You have just heard Dragnet, a new series
- 26:47of authentic cases from official files. Technical advice for Dragnet comes from the Office
- 26:52of Acting Chief of Police W. A. Wharton, Los Angeles Police Department,
- 26:56honoring the City of Greenwich, State of Etiquette and the men who make
- 27:00up the Greenwich Police Department, another of America's great law enforcement agencies. One
- 27:07of these men, Chief John M. Bleieson FBI National Police Academy graduate who
- 27:12dedicates his life to making yours more secure. The Team of Cigarettes, the
- 27:22best of long Cigarettes, has brought you Dragnet from Los Angeles. Listen to
- 27:32Dragnet next week and be sure to hear Martin Downey tonight on NBC Welcome Back.
- 27:42You know, there are often little moments in Dragnet that'll stick out to
- 27:48me. Second Tom going through and just really nice touches. Probably the one
- 27:55thing in this episode that really stands out is when Hoday is new rating the
- 28:00dead body report, and it really illustrates the power of voice tone, because
- 28:06Friday's voice tone really conveys so much of the feeling over this death. Now
- 28:15on to some listener comments and feedback, and we'll start with some comments regarding
- 28:22episode fourteen forty two. Pastor Lisa comments, I love dragging at old time
- 28:29radio and TV. This was a good episode, a great episode. And
- 28:33then I received an comment on the blog, and this was regarding the TV
- 28:40version of The Big Little Jesus, but it applies as much to the radio
- 28:44version. Raphael comments, a seasonal classic. This show has an unforgettable exchange.
- 28:51Friday is interviewing the priest in the church. How long is the church
- 28:56open all night? Friday? You leave it wide oat and so any Seve
- 29:00can walk in pretty smilingly knowingly, particularly save Sergeant This gives me goosebumps every
- 29:07time I hear it, and that is a great piece of dialogue. It's
- 29:11one of those things I don't think you would hear in the typical Dragnet episode,
- 29:17But this is the exact type of thing that Richard Breen, who wrote
- 29:22that episode, he wrote the nineteen fifty four Dragnet movie and he wrote the
- 29:26nineteen sixty six Dragnet TV movie. Is the type of little bits of dialogue
- 29:32that Richard Breen also wrote. Pat Novak put in to make this a really
- 29:36strong episode. I think the power of the episode is really represented by the
- 29:41fact that it was redone for the nineteen sixties color TV series. And I
- 29:49think the reason it was redone, even at a very different time, I
- 29:53think when you're in the midst of the mid sixties, with all of that
- 29:57turmoil, this type of story was more necessary and more important than it was
- 30:04when it first aired back in nineteen fifty three. And that's why it still
- 30:08stands up today now to listener comments and feedback, and Amazon customer just says,
- 30:15fantastic app. I listen to it every day. Well, thanks so
- 30:18much. I'm glad you enjoy it. We will be back on Monday with
- 30:22the Saint, and then be sure and listen to us next Saturday for another
- 30:27episode of Dragnet. In the meantime, sendra comments to Box thirteen at Great
