Transcript
- 0:00Hour number two, welcome back Miller and Condon.
- 0:02Iowa Sports Radio Network, John Bowencamp coming up toward the
- 0:05bottom of the hour, Variety of topics with John, including the
- 0:08Hawkeyes, Trent's plays of the day, circus sports sponsor,
- 0:11those that comes up with about 10 minutes before too.
- 0:15But let's get to our next guest. Don't want to keep them waiting.
- 0:17Game one tonight. Chad Buchanan is well, he's a
- 0:21Valley grad, a Simpson grad. He's one of us here from central
- 0:26Iowa now the general manager, the Indiana Pacers, and he joins
- 0:29us. Chad Trent Condon, Ken Miller,
- 0:32thanks for giving us and your hometown a few minutes here on
- 0:35the cusp of game one. How are you, Chad Buchanan?
- 0:39I'm doing great guys. I appreciate you having me on
- 0:40today. No, I appreciate it as well.
- 0:42I think I spoke with you almost 30 years ago when you were at
- 0:45Simpson, believe it or not, but that for another day.
- 0:49So I guess where I want to start with you is, you know, we go
- 0:52back to the the Lakers and The Mavericks straight and how that
- 0:55caught everybody off guard and everything that went on to it.
- 0:57But it kind of gave us sports talkers and fans of sports like
- 1:01an opportunity maybe to look behind the curtain.
- 1:04I want to talk about the trade that you made when you sent
- 1:08obviously you you acquire Halliburton and send the I think
- 1:11he led the league and reap Sabonis led the league in
- 1:14rebounding this year. But a pretty significant trade
- 1:17once you're getting close to actually finalizing this thing,
- 1:21kind of take us behind the scenes, if you will.
- 1:25Yeah, so Tyrese was somebody that I had, you know, first team
- 1:28play at Iowa State. Ironically, I had my nephew was
- 1:31a manager on the team at Iowa State and he had told me is when
- 1:34Tyrese is a freshman, like, hey, we have this freshman from
- 1:37Wisconsin. He's kind of this quirky.
- 1:40He has a kind of a quirky game and he's skinny and he's got
- 1:42this funky looking shot, but he's pretty good.
- 1:45That's the first time I, you know, knew anything about Tyrese
- 1:48and watched him, you know, during time.
- 1:50But I was state and really became a fan of, you know, the
- 1:52way he played and his kind of his IQ and understanding of how
- 1:56to, to make, make his team go and make other players better.
- 1:59And then we didn't have the opportunity to draft and we
- 2:01ironically did not have a pick in that year's draft.
- 2:05And so, you know, gets selected by the Kings and we continue to
- 2:08track him. And, you know, our team was at a
- 2:10point where we had we were playing two centers.
- 2:12We had Demonis, Sabonis and Miles Turner.
- 2:14And it just wasn't clicking and meshing very well in the courts.
- 2:17We made the decision, you know, can we use, you know, Demontis
- 2:21to go get a player like Tyrese? And, you know, the Kings were in
- 2:25position where they had a couple of different point guards and
- 2:28they didn't have a center. So our kind of our needs and
- 2:30their needs matched up. And, you know, we made the trade
- 2:33and we believe that when we made the trade that Tyrese used to be
- 2:35a guy that we could build our franchise around, that he had
- 2:38the qualities as far as, you know, what he did on the court,
- 2:41but also his personality, his character, you know, his
- 2:45leadership ability, that this is a guy that we could build our
- 2:47franchise around for the next 10 to 12 years.
- 2:50And, you know, we're hopeful that, you know, our coach for
- 2:52Carlisle, Hall of Fame coach, championship coach, you know,
- 2:55believe that he could build a system around his talents.
- 2:58And he's done exactly that. And, you know, our team has
- 3:01really taken off ever since that trade and he's really changed so
- 3:04much about our organization. And you know where we're at
- 3:07today? We're we're definitely not here
- 3:08without that guy. So there's been a lot of talk
- 3:11leading into tonight's game one about these two teams coming
- 3:15from small markets, Indiana, Oklahoma City, doing it without
- 3:18the tax threshold that is there. Your job, as you've been on the
- 3:22job now for eight years with the Pacers and now these tax aprons
- 3:25that we have, How much goes into the roster construction, going
- 3:28out and trading for a Pascal PC Ackerman and scouting and
- 3:32figuring out you want Tyrese Halliburton in and then the next
- 3:35layer. But the financial part, the tax
- 3:37part of it, how different is that job that even 8 years ago
- 3:39when you took over? It's much different today.
- 3:42I mean, there's more restrictions, there's more
- 3:44rules. Obviously the money is, you
- 3:46know, grown in our league over the last eight years.
- 3:48The, you know, where the cap is at now and the, you know, you
- 3:51got the aprons you mentioned now that you got to manage it.
- 3:54Everything you, every decision you make, obviously you do for
- 3:57the short term and helping your team for the most part, but you
- 4:00always have to have where does this put us in three, 4-5 years
- 4:04every, every move to make every contract we acquire or sign.
- 4:07And you've got to manage that. You know, some teams have more,
- 4:11you know, more flexibility to take on, you know, different
- 4:14contracts and go to different levels of the cap.
- 4:17And, you know, we've always been very conscious of being, you
- 4:20know, within, you know, reason with our budget and try not to
- 4:24go into luxury tax. But, you know, I think, you
- 4:27know, the Thunder, another great example of that.
- 4:29And I think we've tried to both build our teams in similar ways.
- 4:32And, you know, the financial part of the NBA is a reality.
- 4:36And it, you know, the new the new rules restrict, restrict you
- 4:39on some of the things you're able to do now.
- 4:41And I think I think there are the rules in place are very good
- 4:43for our league. It's built some parity.
- 4:45I mean, this will be the 7th season in a row we've had a
- 4:47different champion, which I think is great for our league.
- 4:50And it's just great for the sport.
- 4:52And you know, but it is part of the reality of being, you know,
- 4:55being in the front office is you got to manage, you know, from
- 4:58year to year where your budgets at and what that means for your
- 5:00roster. Want to ask you what Pascal
- 5:02Siakam means to your roster, keeping in mind he was so good
- 5:06when the Raptors were able to beat Golden State and win their
- 5:09championship. Go.
- 5:10I got all the headlines. I thought Siakam was every bit
- 5:12of a big a piece in that championship run back.
- 5:16I think it was 19, right? 2019.
- 5:19What does Pascal Siakam mean to you guys?
- 5:22You know, Pascal's a guy we've been trying to trade for, for
- 5:25for a couple years before we actually acquired him.
- 5:28You know, our roster was lacking a kind of a versatile power
- 5:32forward. And we had targeted a couple
- 5:34guys over the years and he was always at the top of our list.
- 5:37And, you know, the circumstances finally, you know, came about
- 5:40where Toronto was willing to move him.
- 5:42And we are aggressive and acquiring him.
- 5:44And since we've acquired him, I think our intentions were to
- 5:47bring in a guy who's won a championship, who's got
- 5:49experience, you know, doing that, who fits the way that we
- 5:52play. And most importantly, I mean, he
- 5:54was a great fit, you know, with Tyrese when we, you know,
- 5:58targeted him and it turned out to be exactly that.
- 6:01He's a guy that can do so many different things on the court.
- 6:03He's not really A1 dimensional player.
- 6:06You know, he can really run the floor and finish shots for you.
- 6:09He can play isolation, he can move the ball.
- 6:11He's shot threes well, well for us this year.
- 6:14And he's got most importantly a thing I think that he brings,
- 6:17like I mentioned, his experiences, leadership.
- 6:19He's he's always got the right thing to say at the right
- 6:21moment. And there's times where as a
- 6:23leader you don't say anything. And there's times a leader where
- 6:25you got to be tough on your team mates and there's a time where
- 6:27you got to be really positive when everybody else is down.
- 6:30And he's got a great feel for that.
- 6:32It's a human skill, a touch that he has it.
- 6:36It's hard to quantify, but when you walk into our locker room
- 6:39after a game, win or lose, and he's speaking, this message is
- 6:43always spot on. It just makes sense to our to
- 6:45our guys and that's been just a, a super valuable trait that you
- 6:49don't see when you watch the game being played.
- 6:52Another guy, Chad on your roster, Aaron Nesmith.
- 6:55Don't remember him at Vanderbilt hardly at all.
- 6:57He plays for Boston for two years.
- 6:59What did you see out of him? He's turned into obviously one
- 7:01of the top defenders in the league.
- 7:03What do you see with the guy like that and what he's built
- 7:06himself into now as he sits in his mid 20s?
- 7:09Sure. And Vanderbilt, Aaron was a guy
- 7:11who played, he was a really a scorer.
- 7:13He was a guy that they ran off a lot of screens to try to get him
- 7:18shots from the perimeter. And he was he was really kind of
- 7:20a catch and shoot scoring wing in the college.
- 7:23And, you know, he gets to Boston, he's playing on a great
- 7:26team, A championship level team behind some really good wings.
- 7:29And and we always felt like, you know, our job is as a front
- 7:33office is identify guys that maybe you're not getting an
- 7:35opportunity elsewhere that fit your system, that could maybe
- 7:39blossom in a new setting. And that's Aaron was always one
- 7:43of the guys that we felt fed that mold.
- 7:45And when we required him, you know, we bought into, you know,
- 7:49selling him on the importance of what he could become for us.
- 7:52You know, Coach Carlisle, give him a lot of credit.
- 7:55You know, the day we acquired him, we flew him to Las Vegas
- 7:58for summer league and on that plane we just talked about, you
- 8:01know, what he could be for us and envisioned a role for him.
- 8:04And you know, I think Aaron really has embraced being a
- 8:07rugged physical, you know, just coming at you all the time,
- 8:12defender and and a capable scorer.
- 8:15We've seen him get hot shooting threes.
- 8:17We've seen him attack the rim and transition and he's just a
- 8:20guy who brings it every single second he's on the floor.
- 8:23I mean, there is never a moment where Aaron Nesmith is not
- 8:26giving you everything he's got. And that type of mentality and
- 8:29that type of unselfishness is really a huge piece to our
- 8:34success. And never, never wants any
- 8:36credit for anything. Doesn't care if he gets two
- 8:39shots or 20 shots in the game. Is always setting the tone for
- 8:43us defensively and he sets the tone for us physically too.
- 8:46I mean, we've got a lot of skilled players in our starting
- 8:49lineup and Aaron and Andrew Nembar give us some physicality,
- 8:52which is much needed, especially when you get in the playoffs
- 8:55like this. Yeah, game changes, no doubt.
- 8:57Well, here comes Oklahoma City and SGA and Williams and
- 9:00Holmgren are you guys are an underdog in the series.
- 9:04Not the first time you've been an underdog these playoffs by
- 9:06any means. When you look at Oklahoma City
- 9:09and what they do, well, obviously the results speak for
- 9:12themselves. How do you try and slow this
- 9:13team down? What will Coach Carlisle have up
- 9:16his sleeve for tonight? Well, they've been the best team
- 9:19from start to finish. So if you want to win a
- 9:21championship, you should want to have to play and have to go
- 9:24through the best team. So that's that's the the
- 9:27challenge in front of us right now.
- 9:28I think their team is well constructed.
- 9:31They've got a great coach. They've got guys that can do a
- 9:34little bit of everything. But I think the strength of
- 9:37their team is their defensive mentality.
- 9:39I mean, they've got defenders all over the floor.
- 9:41They've got great chemistry. They're very connected and I
- 9:44think to have a chance to beat A-Team like this, you've really
- 9:47got to, you know, get them moving as a defense and you got
- 9:50to make shots. I mean, it sounds very simple,
- 9:52but you're not going to be able to beat these guys playing
- 9:55one-on-one basketball. You've got to move the ball.
- 9:57You got to try and play fast, which is kind of how we play.
- 10:00And you got to be able to make open shots because they're going
- 10:03to help each other defensively, which can kind of create some
- 10:05driving kick and, you know, extra pass opportunities.
- 10:08You've got to be ready to catch the shoot and make shots, which
- 10:11you know, our team has done that pretty well in the playoffs.
- 10:13This is going to be different stage and a different level of
- 10:16defense that we're seeing. If I say they got the best
- 10:18player MVP in the league and Shay and they've just got a lot
- 10:21of lot of chemistry and connectedness and our teams are
- 10:24very similar. I think in the fact that they
- 10:26really everybody's embraced their role and everybody is, you
- 10:29know, pulling for each other and playing for each other, which
- 10:32makes for, you know, some unselfish play.
- 10:34And I think it's I think it'll be great basketball to watch.
- 10:36If you love basketball and you know you're putting past the big
- 10:40markets and the big superstar names, you just want to watch
- 10:43basketball because you love the game.
- 10:44I think both of our teams play basketball the right way and a
- 10:47lot of guys who play for each other, which is enjoyable to
- 10:50watch. Chad, before we let you go a
- 10:52little look back and as you sit here now on the cusp of game one
- 10:56of the NBA Finals, a long way from West Des Moines Valley High
- 10:59School and of course Simpson College, the D3 ranks.
- 11:02I mean, you look at NBAGMSA lot of them with Ivy League
- 11:05educations and the like, What the IT took for you to come from
- 11:09the D3 level? Want to do something in
- 11:11basketball now being AGM in the NBA, the path that you took and
- 11:16and that it could happen. Yeah, for anybody, even people
- 11:18here from the state of Iowa. Yeah, I think anybody don't be
- 11:22afraid to chase your dream. You know, I grew up, you know,
- 11:25West Des Moines, like you mentioned, I had a great family
- 11:27that supported my love for the game.
- 11:28And I was around a lot of great coaches, a lot of great mentors
- 11:32during my time growing up in West Des Moines and then on The
- 11:34Simpson and later, you know, Iowa.
- 11:36And having good people around you help set the course for what
- 11:40you can, you know, dream and achieve.
- 11:42And I never set out to become an NBAGMI, just happened to
- 11:46approach every opportunity that was in front of me and tried to
- 11:49do the best I could at it and work the best as hard as I could
- 11:52at it and just be a good person to others.
- 11:54And I think that's open doors for me and allowed me to have
- 11:57this opportunity to, you know, get to where I'm at.
- 12:00But it's, you know, there's lots of people out there that have
- 12:02similar qualities that, you know, maybe, maybe give up on
- 12:05their dream. And I think you got to be able
- 12:07to go through some hard times and persevere and not give up on
- 12:10what, you know, life could eventually to bring to you.
- 12:13And I've got a supportive family at home that really sticks by me
- 12:16and it allows me to do what I do.
- 12:18And I miss out on a lot of stuff at home and they're always there
- 12:21and supportive for me. So it takes a lot of people to
- 12:25have individual success. And I've been fortunate enough
- 12:28to have great family and teachers and coaches of my whole
- 12:31life here. Not lost on anybody in Central
- 12:33Highway. We've got a a member of The
- 12:36Simpsons Storm that's putting together the Indiana Pacers, a
- 12:39Hawkeye that's doing what she does in Indianapolis, a Cyclone
- 12:42that's leading your team. We are well represented, no
- 12:45doubt about that. Hey, last thing for you, kind of
- 12:47away from the game, etcetera. In some respects, just because
- 12:52you're in the league and I'm guessing that you guys are kind
- 12:54of like us on your off nights, you're watching basketball
- 12:58inside the NBA after so many years, I think it was 36, did
- 13:02their last broadcast of your of your of your series, actually
- 13:06Knicks and the Pacers. But that crew meant so much to
- 13:09the game and I think introduced some new fans.
- 13:12How do you remember? How will you remember inside the
- 13:15NBA and that broadcast and that group of guys that would come
- 13:18onto our television sets? I mean, a phenomenal group of
- 13:22guys that really, you know, brought laughter to the game,
- 13:27brought analysis to the game and brought just a a fun loving, you
- 13:30know, perspective on, you know, sports and you know, those guys
- 13:34chemistry and, you know, love for the M.
- 13:37They really helped, you know, educate people on, you know,
- 13:40what was going on the court, but also about, Hey, this is, you
- 13:43know, this is pro sports and it's serious.
- 13:45But there's there's a fun, fun to it and there's an enjoyment
- 13:48to the game. And, you know, you'll forever
- 13:52remember, you know, the NBA in my lifetime growing up, I'll
- 13:55always remember that's just part of the NBA was inside the NBA
- 13:58and Ernie and those guys and, you know, listen to them and,
- 14:01you know, assess and analyze games and talk about players and
- 14:05and strategy. But, you know, I think the thing
- 14:08that all always remember about that group is how they made it
- 14:10fun and, you know, our jobs and, you know, can be serious
- 14:14business. Like I mentioned by the core of
- 14:16this, it's a game that we all love and we all have fun doing
- 14:20it, whether you're playing it or coaching it or talking about it.
- 14:22And that that crew epitomized, you know, all of that.
- 14:26Yeah, that is for sure. Chad, listen, thank you for
- 14:29doing this. Taking time out again on the
- 14:31precipice of game #1 giving your hometown here a few minutes and
- 14:35the state of Iowa a few minutes to talk to one of us, Chad
- 14:38Buchanan. Best of luck, Chad.
- 14:39Thanks for doing this again. I really appreciate it guys.
- 14:43Yep, good to talk to you, Chad Buchanan, the general manager of
- 14:46the Indiana Pacers. As we catch up, get more more
- 14:50than generous with this time, I thought.
- 14:53I have a lot of Simpson people, a lot of Valley people that are
- 14:56checking in with me. I'm very happy to hear Chad's
- 14:59voice. A lot of memories, some stories
- 15:01that are being passed my way, some probably not on the air.
- 15:04But yeah, a lot of people with a lot of great things to say.
- 15:08Very easy guy to root. For no he.
- 15:10Is and is. You know and.
- 15:11He's an Iowan. So the first time broadcasting
- 15:14game of Valley, walking into the gym there cold iron field house,
- 15:17walking in there you see this picture.
- 15:19Back then he was a scout and then you see even from that
- 15:22level just to become an MBA scout and growing.
- 15:25Up in a college market, right? You would think that he would go
- 15:27that direction. Absolutely, but got a job now.
- 15:31I wonder because his first MBA job was as a scout and a
- 15:36scouting director with Portland. I wonder if that had something
- 15:39maybe to do with Bourne. Mike Bourne.
- 15:42Oh. Because he's been with the
- 15:45Blazers for how long? I mean, decades, right?
- 15:48I wonder if that's where the connection possibly came from to
- 15:51lead to that path. But it can happen.
- 15:54And we have these stories all across the state of people like
- 15:57this, people that played in the Iowa conference, coached my
- 16:00buddy Adam Dahl with the Simpson Storm.
- 16:02And now he's leading not just a GMGM for one of the more well
- 16:07constructed teams you mentioned Siakam.
- 16:10Oh, what a player. And that was a flash of
- 16:13brilliance, right? And he's kind of up against it
- 16:15in some respects too, right? I mean, he's trying to lure free
- 16:19agents to Indianapolis, IN, right, right.
- 16:22Not, not not to Miami, FL or Los Angeles, CA, or dot dot dot,
- 16:27right? Not these some of these cities
- 16:29that have all that glitz behind. Them or a state like Texas that
- 16:32doesn't have state. Taxes State taxes for Houston,
- 16:35Dallas, San Antonio. Now come spend your winners in
- 16:37Indianapolis. What do you say?
- 16:39Right, please put the other hell of a roster.
- 16:42I hope it's a good series, Trent.
- 16:44I really do. I as I said, I would take the
- 16:46points tonight. I think it's going you're you're
- 16:48the opposite. That's what makes sports betting
- 16:51go wrong. Go round right and the operator
- 16:53just sits in the middle and just scoops those $0.10 or whatever.
- 16:56I think it's going to be a good series.
- 16:59I hope it is. I hope I'm right.
- 17:00I'd love to see him get a ring, obviously, but I wonder if it's
- 17:04going to happen this year. We shall see.
- 17:06We'll take your time out. Thank you to Chad Buchanan who
- 17:08set that up for you, by the way. That was my buddy Graham.
- 17:11There's a family connection, somebody that works for back
- 17:15when he was a principal in West Des Moines.
- 17:16So all kinds of connections all over the place.
- 17:18Thank you, Graham. Yes.
- 17:19And big shout out tip of the ball cap there making that
- 17:22happen and. The bad news for Chad Buchanan?
- 17:25We have your number. We have your number.
- 17:27Might be another one down the line.
- 17:28Yeah, you know what? I bet you would do it, too.
- 17:30He's got that Iowa kind of background to him and seemingly
- 17:34appreciates that. We'll take a time out.
- 17:36We'll come back. John Bowen Camp will join us.
- 17:39Miller and Condon, you're listening to the Iowa Sports
- 17:41Radio Network. I'm Miller and Condon.
- 17:43Welcome back, Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 17:45Trenton. Ken with you until the top of
- 17:47the hour. At that time, we'll turn things
- 17:49over. The drive Heather and Lucas take
- 17:53you until 5:00 overtime. Iowa from 5 to 6.
- 17:56John Bowencamp, Iowa College hoops.com, Associated Press,
- 18:00etcetera. We will get into the team with
- 18:03the third best record in the National League at some point,
- 18:05I'm assuming, but we'll start talking Hawks with John.
- 18:08Hello, John Bowencamp, how are you?
- 18:11I'm good. How are you?
- 18:12They'll be. Fine, I knew it was coming.
- 18:13I'd have been disappointed if after that the lead in.
- 18:17That Game 7 Wrigley is going to be a Barber.
- 18:20What's going to be fascinating home field.
- 18:23There's a collapse coming. There.
- 18:25Oh no, anyway, shouting. Up where I want to start with
- 18:29you, John, is kind of not where I'd assumed that we would go
- 18:32here today, but it just dawned on me watching.
- 18:35I saw some highlights from WNBA on the Twitter and maybe it's
- 18:39just because I click on Hawkeye and Cyclone athletes.
- 18:42Lucy Olsen joined up or showed up rather in her Mystic in her
- 18:46Mystic gear, making a shot in one of the games.
- 18:49Not sure where they play. But that aside, I want to ask
- 18:52you about the the shoes that she was the the position that she
- 18:56stepped into, right. Obviously a generational we'll
- 19:00never see one like her again in Caitlin.
- 19:03And here comes Lucy Olsen and I think some of the fans, at least
- 19:06at the beginning, thought, you know, that this is going to be
- 19:09quote, her replacement, which is never going to happen.
- 19:12You saw all the home games covered most of them.
- 19:16I thought from where I sit that she handled the pressure that
- 19:20came along with that. Not that Hawkeye fans overly
- 19:23burdened with it. I didn't think, but to to to be
- 19:26asked to, you know, be the next. I thought she did an admirable
- 19:31job in her one and only year at the University of How about you?
- 19:35No, I did too. I mean, I, I mean, she had that
- 19:37little slump there during which coincided with the losing streak
- 19:40there in January, But other than that, she played well.
- 19:44I mean, she was, she was, she was she, she just fit the role
- 19:47very well. And I thought down the stretch,
- 19:51especially when she kind of broke out at some, she was
- 19:53really comfortable in, in, in the position she played the role
- 19:57she had with his team. And I, you know, I, I honestly
- 20:01think they probably wish they could have had another year of
- 20:03her. I mean, that's, I mean, I, I
- 20:04thought. She handled everything very
- 20:06well. Just great personality, but also
- 20:09great players. She made shots, you know, got
- 20:12got the ball to the right people.
- 20:14And I thought she just for what she, the position she was
- 20:17playing, which, you know, encompasses all of like what she
- 20:20said, I thought she did really well.
- 20:22Let's jump over to the men's side and a Friday news dump.
- 20:25Perhaps Pete McCullum is joining the basketball team with his
- 20:29son. In the grand scheme of things,
- 20:30we see sons join all the time and go on to play their four
- 20:34years with their dad. However, Hawkeye fan base is a
- 20:37little bit different after being Bird by Todd Licklider.
- 20:40The McCaffrey years that both those players were good enough.
- 20:43It just there's a lot of scar tissue there, John and in year
- 20:47#1 trying to resurrect a very disappointed fan base over the
- 20:53last 2025, thirty years now of men's basketball.
- 20:57Do you think this was the right choice for McCollum to bring his
- 20:59son along? I don't I don't see a problem
- 21:02with it. I really don't because I mean
- 21:04you, I don't know how much he will play to begin with, but if
- 21:07you look at his numbers last year in high school, they were
- 21:10really good numbers. This was a first team all state
- 21:13kid on a really good high school basketball team.
- 21:17And it's not like this kid can't play.
- 21:20It's also not like he's going to play 30 minutes a game there
- 21:23his. 1st. And it's like it's, it's you're,
- 21:27you're, you're fitting him into the roster.
- 21:30You, you, you're going to use him as you see fit.
- 21:34He's not going to be a starter. He's not going to, but he's a
- 21:37good player. And I mean, he, they needed to
- 21:39fill a couple roster spots. Why not fill him with a pretty
- 21:43good player who, oh, by the way, happened to yourself?
- 21:45I didn't have a problem with it. I, I, I think the kid will fit
- 21:50into what they want him to do. I don't think it's going to be a
- 21:53big role for him, but I think it will be good for him to be there
- 21:57because, like I said, I think he's a pretty good basketball
- 21:58player. Where I want to go with you is
- 22:01sticking with the with the men's program practices started, which
- 22:07is which is great. I don't think you've been given
- 22:10access as of yet. The media hasn't been allowed
- 22:12in. Correct me if I'm wrong.
- 22:13I didn't think you had, but what kind of what are you, what are
- 22:16you hearing from back channels, if anything?
- 22:18Is this just kind of, you know, the roster in some respects is
- 22:22is very familiar with one another because there's so many
- 22:24drink Bulldogs on it. They're just practicing further
- 22:27E than they normally would have last year.
- 22:30What are you hearing, if anything, as to how it's going
- 22:33and what Mccollum's asking his team to do?
- 22:35John. I haven't heard anything, but I
- 22:37found it interesting watching the videos that I'm looking at
- 22:39and I'm like, you know, you're always used to, whenever you see
- 22:42the videos, you know, these guys, you know, or whatever, the
- 22:45guys coming back and you're looking at that and that's
- 22:47pretty much a whole new team. And so it's going to take some
- 22:50getting used to getting to know these guys and all that.
- 22:53But I, I agree with you. I, I think there's a really good
- 22:55foundation there. These are guys that know each
- 22:58other as the, you know, all the Drake guys know each other.
- 23:00They know what he wants as a coach.
- 23:02They know how he is as a coach. It's going to take maybe a
- 23:05little bit of a learning curve to the guys coming into even the
- 23:08Cooper Koch, you know, because he's going to have to learn a
- 23:11new coach. But I think this summer will be
- 23:14really good for them to kind of bond and, and you can kind of
- 23:17see in what they were doing in the first couple of videos that
- 23:20this is a team that he's really trying to get them to bond right
- 23:23away. And you can see that there,
- 23:25there is some chemistry there right away.
- 23:27So it, it, it's going to come. I, I still think this, this is
- 23:31going to be a very good team this year.
- 23:33I think it's an empty tournament team again, some things are
- 23:35going to have to kind of fall into place.
- 23:37But I like what they're doing right now, and I like where this
- 23:39program is at. When he got six guys that have
- 23:42played for him before, I think there's a chance to hit the
- 23:44ground running and and couch basketball.
- 23:47John is, you know, it's just so much different with to turnover
- 23:50in every single roster that happens.
- 23:52I think there's a big opportunity for them to go out
- 23:54now. What have you heard about the
- 23:56non conference scheduling? There hasn't been out.
- 23:58There's a Bucknell game here. They're playing what in
- 24:01California? They'll play two games out there
- 24:03in Palm Desert and of course the Iowa State game.
- 24:05Have you heard much else though about what this non conference
- 24:08slate is going to look like? I think an opportunity for them
- 24:11to get off to a good start. Yeah, I do too.
- 24:13And I, I mean, obviously they're going to fill in teams there
- 24:16that you know, that, that everybody always, I believe
- 24:18Western Illinois on the schedule.
- 24:20I have not heard anything officially, but I do believe
- 24:23Western Illinois is on the schedule.
- 24:25And you talk about a program that's getting all new players.
- 24:28He's got a whole new roster there.
- 24:31So I mean, I think there's some, there's some challenges to what
- 24:34they're going, they're going to have this year.
- 24:35I mean, I, I think they're going to be tested in the schedule,
- 24:39You know, we'll kind of see it fill in here over the next few
- 24:42weeks. But I, I like where they're at.
- 24:44I like the game in Des Moines. I, I think it's a good idea.
- 24:46I'm going to be curious to see if maybe there's going to be a
- 24:49women's game in there, but I don't think there's going to be,
- 24:52I think I think it's a good idea.
- 24:54I think it's a good idea to play that game there or to play in
- 24:57the Quad Cities or whatever, to just kind of get out and and
- 25:00kind of show this program around the state.
- 25:02Yeah, look what the Quad Cities game meant to the fans last
- 25:05year. That was what stuck with me.
- 25:07I mean, to the team rather getting in front of those fan
- 25:09base and how passionate that they were.
- 25:11I went out their Hall of Fame class for 2025.
- 25:14The two names that I think would resonate, Bob Bolsby, obviously
- 25:18the athletic director and Brandon Sheriff.
- 25:20Here's AI. Don't know if you if it's
- 25:22possible to answer this question because everybody's going to
- 25:25have so many opinions. Who's Ference's best offensive
- 25:28lineman? There's been so many.
- 25:32That that's the I, he was one of them clearly.
- 25:35And I mean, he was, he was just so good in, in that job, in that
- 25:40role. And I, I always, because I've
- 25:42been, that's one of my freelance projects 30 years, the last
- 25:44couple years is interviewing these people going into the Hall
- 25:47of Fame and it's kind of interesting.
- 25:49It's kind of interesting to talk to them and what it means to
- 25:52them and all that. And so I was looking through the
- 25:54class that was like, he's supposed to be some really good
- 25:56interviews. You know, look at Bob Bolesby
- 25:58and what he did, you know, and when when you saw it kind of
- 26:01broken down there, he really did a lot there.
- 26:03I mean, the Davis, the Tom Davis stuff, you look back and you
- 26:06think maybe you know about that decision.
- 26:09But other than that, he had a big impact on that athletic
- 26:12program. And so, you know, looking
- 26:14through that class, all those people are deserving that it was
- 26:18they've had so many good athletes here.
- 26:19But getting back to your original question, I think
- 26:22Brandon Sheriff's on that list and he may be at the top, but
- 26:25you can argue for some different guys, but he's definitely.
- 26:28On that list. Gallery probably would be 1 for
- 26:31me. His NFL career he would have
- 26:34started a right tackle and his sheriff.
- 26:36He wasn't a left tackle of the league.
- 26:37Linderbaum. They moved to be right inside.
- 26:39There's a great one and we can go on and on, yes.
- 26:43There's been so many. Bruce Nelson was a Bruce Nelson,
- 26:46Yes. And what you're talking?
- 26:48And guys that originally came in and didn't have a lot of, you
- 26:51know, didn't have the stars by their name and came in and
- 26:54played really good football and, and, and grew as players and
- 26:58then went on to the NFL and had big impact.
- 27:01So that's the thing that has always impressed me is the guys
- 27:03that have taken that next step and have been really, really
- 27:06good. And Tristan, worse, maybe we'll
- 27:08have the best NFL career, best tackle in the league, all of
- 27:12them, and he's going to be the most well compensated.
- 27:14And we're not talking about any poor guys out of this group
- 27:17either that we're going through. And Speaking of that, looking at
- 27:21this offensive line, no, they Jennings dunker right at the end
- 27:25of spring practice. He's going through surgery.
- 27:26Well, you don't want that. Maybe the best right tackle in
- 27:28college football coming back this season.
- 27:31They go out into the transfer portal.
- 27:32They bring in the candidate maybe to help on the left side
- 27:34there. We talked about the new offense,
- 27:36what Tim Blester is implementing and the quarterback plays going
- 27:39to be better. But it doesn't matter if your
- 27:41offensive line isn't very good. Where do you sit and the
- 27:44development of that offensive line and, and where they're
- 27:46going to be by the time August camp starts up?
- 27:48I mean, I think they'll be pretty good.
- 27:50What I would like to see though, is to have that group
- 27:53established by Game 1, you know, don't kind of keep kind of
- 27:56moving guys around as they kind of have here in some of these
- 27:59past years, have that group established.
- 28:01But I do think it's a very good group.
- 28:03And I think it then when you, when you put them with the skill
- 28:06players around them, I that's why I think this is going to be
- 28:10a much better offense this year. And and I think now it's it's
- 28:14just kind of, I mean, you know, you've got a new, I'm going to
- 28:17say new offense line coach. She's now been there a few years
- 28:20now. They know what he wants.
- 28:21You're starting to see a lot more cohesiveness in that group.
- 28:24And I think that is going to be the big thing with this offense
- 28:27in my mind. Yeah.
- 28:29Did anybody say Marshall Yanda? There's another.
- 28:32One Hall of Famer. Right.
- 28:34I mean, there's just been so many.
- 28:36Who did he declete? What's the kid's name?
- 28:39Parker. Yeah, I remember Parker.
- 28:40Parker, that's what it was. Oh, what a blind side block that
- 28:44that that plays. Not legal anymore.
- 28:46No, that draws a 15 yard flag and.
- 28:49Maybe an injection? And maybe so many things do
- 28:52that. Then somebody was talking about
- 28:54I was a video from just a few years ago of a quarterback hit.
- 28:58And I'm like, in in today's game, that's a fine, you know,
- 29:00in a penalty. And it was.
- 29:02And at that time it was perfectly legal, you know.
- 29:04So John, you're a member of the media.
- 29:07Trent and I would be a big 10 media days, but what kind of
- 29:10different capacity? We're there to talk and censor.
- 29:12You're there to to write stories.
- 29:14No, we'd love to you're, but you would be there to write as
- 29:18you've been. There's so many of those media
- 29:19days over the years. If in your capacity, wouldn't
- 29:22you want Gronowski to be there? Because I'm not sure he will be
- 29:25there this year. No.
- 29:27And that's we were talking, Tom Caker and I were talking about
- 29:29that night about who might come. And I was like, he has to be.
- 29:33I agree. That's your starter, but he also
- 29:37has never played. Right.
- 29:39And Kirk likes to take guys there to honor.
- 29:43Reward them, yes. Yes, to reward them.
- 29:45And so yes, he should be there. Now whether he will be there, I
- 29:49don't know, but he should be there in my mind because that's
- 29:53your face, face your offense and and has a really good story to
- 29:57tell. And but I think Kirk always
- 30:00likes his, you know, the guys that have been there a long time
- 30:04to reward them. But then again, you start
- 30:06thinking, well, OK, who should go?
- 30:07Then it goes back to you should take it, bye bye.
- 30:11Yeah, 'cause McNamara never went right.
- 30:13He didn't go, thank goodness, right?
- 30:15I mean, certainly his last. Year last year was Jay Higgins.
- 30:18Your Jay Higgins, Luke Lachey and Quinn Schulte went last.
- 30:21Year. Yeah, yeah.
- 30:23Got to have investment in the program.
- 30:24I mean, it's Kirk. I know he but but the rest, the
- 30:27Big 10 media wants to talk to the guy that's going to change
- 30:31this offense. And I'm not talking about Jim
- 30:33Lester 'cause he doesn't get the play.
- 30:36They want to talk to Grenade. That's why I asked John, because
- 30:38he's, you know, the different media than you and I are, Trent.
- 30:40So yeah, that's why I put it down the.
- 30:42Interesting thing is Kirk's going to hate this being in Las
- 30:45Vegas, but that's because he always liked the Indianapolis go
- 30:48over that morning, get it done, come home.
- 30:51And you're not going to be able to do that with this.
- 30:53And and this thing's going to be a lot more glitzy than in the
- 30:56past. And it's going to be fascinating
- 30:59to see how that all. Goes well.
- 31:00Maybe we'll get him over to Circa.
- 31:02We'll put him in the world's biggest sports book.
- 31:04He can hang out with us for a little bit.
- 31:05Maybe we can can get him to change his tune.
- 31:07What do you think? Yeah, I just bring it up to him
- 31:10at some point. We'll see.
- 31:12Yeah. Yeah.
- 31:13Good luck, John. Thanks for doing it.
- 31:14Well, real quick on your baseball team, John, the Mets
- 31:17and the Dodgers three-game, is it a three-game or 4 game?
- 31:20That's four they play today. Yeah, super, really good teams,
- 31:24obviously. And and then going back to the
- 31:26weekend, the Yankees and the Dodgers, that was really good
- 31:29theater, especially Friday night Judge.
- 31:31And then no, Tony. Or was it the other way around?
- 31:32Whatever. They they both the both the big
- 31:35boppers doing what they do. Obviously, despite all the
- 31:38injuries, you you got to acknowledge that this Dodger
- 31:43team is still going to be a major, major factor even though
- 31:45their pitching is decimated. I keep telling people this right
- 31:49now, that you look at their record and then you realize they
- 31:52haven't come close to even playing their best baseball.
- 31:54Right. So, and, and there's a lot of
- 31:56teams out there that have really good records that I don't know
- 31:58how much better they could be. So I'm not big yet.
- 32:02They'll be fine. Who's the second best team in
- 32:05the West in your mind? I can't say the Padres just
- 32:10because I don't like him and I can't say the.
- 32:12Giants because you don't like him.
- 32:14Yeah, so I. Might be the Rockies in your
- 32:16mind. In my mind, no, I'm going to go
- 32:18Diamondbacks, of course, you know, and then Corbin Burns.
- 32:21Think about all the guys that all the pitchers that were out
- 32:23there as free agents this year and how many of them gotten
- 32:26hurt, you know, and then think about all the money that was
- 32:30invested in them and it's. It's crazy.
- 32:33My my squad signed Max Scherzer. How's that worked out?
- 32:36Brutal. Yeah.
- 32:37So, John, good stuff, buddy. Thanks for doing this.
- 32:40Talk to you in a couple of weeks.
- 32:42Thanks, I'm good. With you use the same John Bowen
- 32:44camp. Associated Press and Iowa
- 32:46College hoops.com love catching up with Bowen Camp.
- 32:49That offensive lineman question. I mean, it's, it's, it's
- 32:52everybody's got their own opinion.
- 32:55Gallery was drafted second overall.
- 32:57He was the best college player. I think he was, right.
- 32:59I think he was. He was, maybe.
- 33:01Linderbaum, though, Trent. There's a college.
- 33:04He was also dominated. He did.
- 33:07He didn't have much help. I mean his guards were mostly
- 33:09terrible. Around him, right?
- 33:12But they also didn't run the ball very well.
- 33:14I mean, doesn't that have to also be a component?
- 33:17I just like the way he finishes his block till the echo of the
- 33:20whistle. Sure, but that shouldn't make
- 33:22you the best guy I. Get it?
- 33:23I know, but those are the places that stick with you in your
- 33:26mind. Now look at gallery's probably
- 33:29the answer, yeah? But so talented.
- 33:31Oh Yanda, those dudes. Balaka played a long time, got a
- 33:37Super Bowl. Ring, you end up playing there.
- 33:39Kayak doesn't even have a football program anymore.
- 33:41Yeah. It's wild, truly is.
- 33:44Thought he's going to Iowa State.
- 33:46Is that right? I didn't know that he was.
- 33:48Was he committed to Iowa State out of high school?
- 33:50I don't remember that. Something like that out of
- 33:52Animosa. Decided to go up there, got a
- 33:54phone call and now Football Hall of Fame.
- 33:58Wow, Miller and Condon Trent's plays of the day.
- 34:00They are next. Not a ton of baseball.
- 34:03There is an NBA game. I want to.
- 34:06Did you find the prices for the alternate lines?
- 34:08I'll find them here during. The good stuff Miller and Condon
- 34:10Circus Sport sponsors that. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 34:13Network Game One, NBA tonight, Oklahoma City, 9 and a half, ten
- 34:19point favorite couple of 10s, DraftKings and Caesar's.
- 34:22Now the numbers gone up. See where it goes as we get
- 34:25closer to tip time. Do you play?
- 34:28You don't play the totals in games much, do you?
- 34:30No, I don't either. Well I don't play games either,
- 34:33but I've never been one to even you know, try and think if it's
- 34:37a good number or a bad number for some you can take advantage
- 34:39of. I just not into it.
- 34:41Same, right? My mind does not work deep into
- 34:44that. Every once in a while they will,
- 34:46but in general, I'm not a great better as is.
- 34:48And then you take it to throw another category in there that I
- 34:51could struggle at. No thanks for me.
- 34:53Yeah, I'm with you. So it's not a not a large slate.
- 34:56There's a bunch of games going on as we speak in Major League
- 34:59Baseball. There's one, maybe, I don't
- 35:02know, a handful, 5 or 6 of them under the lights tonight or in
- 35:05the twilight tonight. Do you like any baseball before
- 35:08we get to the NBA in your alternate?
- 35:09Totals yeah, I got a couple of baseball games for today.
- 35:12We're going to open things up 635 first pitch tonight.
- 35:17I'm going to take Peapot and the rays -140 for them against Jack
- 35:22Leiter and the God forsaken Rangers.
- 35:24Man team just can't hit, so we'll lay it with Tampa in very.
- 35:28Years. Jack Leiter, of course.
- 35:30He's AL's kid. He was.
- 35:32Wasn't he the number one or #2? Pick He was up there.
- 35:35He. Was out of Andy.
- 35:36Yep, but Jack Letter's in the show now.
- 35:38Good. He's four and two, 3.66 ERA,
- 35:41good solid start to his career. He's not the problem, no the
- 35:45offense. That's the problem with the.
- 35:46When they step into the batter's box.
- 35:48Speaking of guys though that have kind of disappointed who?
- 35:51Cole Reagans. For the Royals.
- 35:53Here's a bounce back tonight in the Interstate Series.
- 35:55Give me the Royals plus one O. 3 and that's the late game.
- 35:59So there is are they must be underway early.
- 36:01They are in the in the make up game and Casey's up to A2 zip
- 36:04leads as they play top of the fifth in Saint Louis 2 Nothing
- 36:08Royals. And I've got one more play
- 36:10before the NBA tonight. Give me the Liberty laying the
- 36:13big number -12 1/2 in Washington.
- 36:15You mentioned Lucy Olsen a little bit earlier, no?
- 36:17They're not very good they. Are not a very good team and the
- 36:20Liberty. Yeah, they're the best.
- 36:22They're a really, really good. Team, are they the best or would
- 36:26would you say Minnesota? No, it's still Liberty.
- 36:28Yeah, I mean, coupled with what they've done recently, I think
- 36:32you have to give it to Liberty. But that was a good series I
- 36:35think a year ago. That gap is not significant, but
- 36:37the edge goes to New York for and then alternate spread.
- 36:42So tonight you can lay 14 1/2 with the Thunder plus 166.
- 36:49You want to play 19 1/2 nearly 3 to 1.
- 36:52You want to get real crazy Thunder win it by 25.
- 36:56You get basically 5 to 1 + 496 at DraftKings.
- 37:01About 30 + 780. You want to do that?
- 37:05What if I want to bet the Pacers on the money line?
- 37:07The Pacers on the money line you can get plus 360.
- 37:12You would be more apt to do that, wouldn't you?
- 37:14I think it's going to be a good game.
- 37:17You hope. I that's, let me rephrase that,
- 37:20I hope it's going to be a good game.
- 37:22I don't want this thing to end in four or five.
- 37:25I don't. Well, Game 6 would be two weeks
- 37:28from tonight, I think. Hope in one hand, crap in the
- 37:31other, see which one fills up first.
- 37:32And I, I just, I think that's where we are.
- 37:36You're probably right. I want to be dead wrong, and I
- 37:39would love to be dead wrong. I just keep standing out.
- 37:42Was who was favored in the Knicks Pacers series prior to
- 37:45game one? I mean, to win, to win the
- 37:47series. Oh, it was the Knicks, yeah.
- 37:49So Cleveland was favored. The Knicks were favored, yes.
- 37:53And going way back, were the Bucks favored?
- 37:57It was a close one. It was pretty tight.
- 37:59Memory serves, that was the four, five match up.
- 38:02And we thought this could go either way.
- 38:05And the Pacers got through in five and then they got through
- 38:08Cleveland in five and then took six to get through to get
- 38:12through the next. Look, they're three and O in
- 38:14game ones. Is that a trend you should have
- 38:17on your side? 360.
- 38:20I don't think I can go there. So no hockey tonight?
- 38:24Nope, no baseball. It's all hoops.
- 38:26Yep. Oh oh, the Cubs play I think at
- 38:275:45. I like that time slot.
- 38:29Good start. It is, it is.
- 38:31It was a pretty good game yesterday for what I saw.
- 38:34As soon as hockey came on, I was done for baseball.
- 38:36I was loving the Twins on the West Coast.
- 38:38That works out better for my schedule.
- 38:39Twins got it done again. They did Zebby.
- 38:43And now Lopez is out eight to 12.
- 38:45We saw that. That's why you were pissed off
- 38:48with the. Show maybe that's what it was.
- 38:50Yeah, I wonder. I knew there must be something.
- 38:52Do you lose a bet? Something's not under his skin,
- 38:54Pablo. Yeah.
- 38:56That's going to do it for us. The drive is next, Trent, and
- 38:59I'll be back tomorrow. We're always here Monday through
- 39:01Friday from noon until 2, talking sports with you on the
- 39:05Eye with Sports Radio Network.
