- 0:00Hello there, my name is Tyler Griffin and this is Scripture
- 0:03Study Insights by Scripture Central Today Mosiah chapters
- 0:091-2 and three. This is an incredible set of of
- 0:15chapters for teaching all kinds of of life lessons and helping
- 0:21us on the covenantal path. There are literally thousands of
- 0:25different teaching and learning and study overlays that you
- 0:29could put on to these chapters and benefit from.
- 0:34That is one of the amazing things about these these
- 0:37scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon, is it is broad enough
- 0:41and deep enough that it can take whatever, whatever you need.
- 0:46You can bring into this book all of your questions, all of your
- 0:51concerns, all of your approaches, and it can take it.
- 0:55And we'll never get to the the bottom of the the gems that this
- 1:00book has to offer us. So considering that there are
- 1:051,000,000 directions we could go, I wanted to take one
- 1:10teaching and learning overlay perspective that I felt might be
- 1:17quite meaningful at this phase of the church in the ongoing and
- 1:22unfolding restoration and where things are currently with the
- 1:27spreading of the gospel in the world.
- 1:30And it has to do with relationships.
- 1:32It has to do with a a sense of belonging to the Lord in a
- 1:39covenant or as Elder Garrett W Gong has mentioned in a variety
- 1:44of settings and and talks this idea of covenantal belonging.
- 1:49So with that foundation, if you look carefully, when you get
- 1:56into a relationship, especially a covenantal relationship, there
- 2:01are usually two parties. There's me and there's thee.
- 2:10So the things that pertain to me and the things that pertain to
- 2:13thee. And then when you come together
- 2:15here in the middle, the focus becomes on the we.
- 2:22So in relationships and covenants this, this middle
- 2:26section, this we this is where the the incredible miracles take
- 2:35place. It's not what can I get from
- 2:38thee. It's how can we put all of our
- 2:42energy on our efforts and our resources into building this,
- 2:46this new entity that is no longer isolated, It's now
- 2:51combined and in in the Abrahamic covenant or in the big covenant,
- 2:56that invitation from from heaven.
- 2:58I will be your God and you will be my people.
- 3:03We're now coming together into this, this middle space, and
- 3:07we're trying to add everything we can into that relationship.
- 3:12So with that foundation, let's dive into these first three
- 3:18chapters of Mosiah, looking carefully for what is this?
- 3:23What do these chapters teach us About loving God, about loving
- 3:30our neighbor, about coming into covenantal relationships with
- 3:35God, and with our with a community belonging to this
- 3:40covenant community. So we open in chapter one and
- 3:45notice you can keep putting the different labels on who the ME
- 3:51is in these different parts of the chapters.
- 3:55So in this case, let's read it through the lenses of King
- 3:59Benjamin, who's towards the end of his life in this perspective
- 4:02of this loving aged father who is in the the location of the ME
- 4:09on this little diagram here on the left.
- 4:11And he's coming in to a conversation with his sons,
- 4:15three of them, Mosiah, Hilorim and Hiloman.
- 4:19And he caused that they should be taught in the language of his
- 4:23fathers. Notice he's bringing his sons
- 4:28into this beautiful middle ground relationship and he's
- 4:33teaching them the language of his fathers, which if you look
- 4:37over at verse 4, includes the language of the Egyptians.
- 4:41Why is that important? Because he's not just trying to
- 4:45take care of their physical needs right here, right now.
- 4:48He's trying to help them become self-sufficient so that they can
- 4:53build the kind of relationship down the road with God through a
- 5:00serious study of their scriptures at that time in
- 5:03Egyptian, and to be able to pass them on to their subsequent
- 5:07generations, which would then bless a whole generation after
- 5:13generation after generation all the way down to our day and
- 5:17time. So thank heaven for people in
- 5:22the past who were covenantally focused and were willing to
- 5:27sacrifice things, not with the intent to try to get something
- 5:32from in, in this case, Benjamin trying to get something from his
- 5:35sons or from us down the road. But he's trying to add into this
- 5:41middle ground, this, this area of we, this covenantal belonging
- 5:46that would then benefit and bless as many lives as possible
- 5:51in his own day as well as moving forward in time.
- 5:54I love this perspective. Now you turn the page over.
- 5:56Look at verse six. It says, Oh my sons, I would
- 5:59think you should remember that these sayings are true and also
- 6:03that these records are true. And behold also the plates of
- 6:06Nephi which contain the records in the sayings of our Father
- 6:09from the time they left Jerusalem until now.
- 6:11And they are true, and we can know of their surety because we
- 6:15have them before our eyes. So he's trying to strengthen
- 6:19them by bringing them further into this covenant connection
- 6:23with God and with the past prophets.
- 6:26And then he goes on verse 7. And now my sons, I would that
- 6:30you should remember to search them diligently.
- 6:34Don't treat the golden plates or the brass plates as if they're
- 6:38just a relic or an artifact or a trophy for the Nephite kings or
- 6:44prophets, but search them diligently.
- 6:48Why? So that you may profit thereby,
- 6:51and I would that you should keep the commandments of God, that
- 6:53you may prosper in the land according to the promises which
- 6:56the Lord hath made unto our fathers.
- 7:01So here's King Benjamin showing this, this multi generational
- 7:06recognition of building faith that he's looking to the past
- 7:12and and mentioning how amazingly blessed his life has been
- 7:17because of what past prophets have done.
- 7:19Now he's trying to pass this on to his children so they can
- 7:23become a strong link in this chain of covenantal faith
- 7:30through the generations. And then in verse nine it tells
- 7:33you he waxed old and he was soon going to pass away.
- 7:37So he asks his son Mosiah to go and gather the people at the
- 7:42temple so he can pass the baton of leadership on to to Mosiah.
- 7:49And he also promises that he will give a name to the people.
- 7:55Because you see this covenantal belonging.
- 7:58It's not just belonging to a club, as as exciting and as
- 8:04helpful as that may be in certain ways in our world, this
- 8:09is belonging in a covenant that is given a name.
- 8:15The name that he's going to be giving them is the name of
- 8:19Christ, and that is the name whereby they're going to be
- 8:23called. And that is the true test of
- 8:25these relationships, is are we doing the right things for the
- 8:30right reasons? Because we're looking to our
- 8:33exemplar, Jesus Christ. That's where you'll find unity.
- 8:37That's where you'll find oneness.
- 8:39That's where you'll find that covenantal belonging is only in
- 8:44Christ. So let's dive right in and look
- 8:48at his speech. Let's go to Mosiah chapter 2,
- 8:51and let's jump all the way down to verse nine.
- 8:54We're going to skip the part where they come to make
- 8:57sacrifice in the tense. These these concepts we've
- 9:01talked about in in previous videos.
- 9:05So in chapter 2, he gathers all of the people at the temple and
- 9:10they're sitting in their tents with their tent door facing the
- 9:13temple, facing the prophet. So a whole group of people who
- 9:19are separate individuals and separate family units have all
- 9:23come together into this center place rooted in Christ, focused
- 9:30on the Prophet facing the temple.
- 9:34There's there's beautiful power here as we consider what it what
- 9:39it means to gather in one and to become more like Zion.
- 9:43And so he stands up on this tower, which is caused to be
- 9:47built because there were so many people who couldn't hear him and
- 9:50they still can't hear him. So he causes his message to be
- 9:52written and distributed among them.
- 9:54But pay close attention to the opening of his great speech here
- 10:00in verse 9, the very first words out of his mouth.
- 10:03My brethren, all ye that have assembled yourselves together,
- 10:08you that can hear my words, which I shall speak unto you
- 10:11this day. It's interesting to note that
- 10:13he's a king, and most kings in the history of time feel very
- 10:20high and mighty. Here he is even physically
- 10:23standing in a high tower, with everybody facing him.
- 10:27It would be so easy for him to inhale the praise, the the glory
- 10:33of the world, and to become less like Jesus Christ, and to speak
- 10:39down at his people, and to look down on them and to speak to
- 10:44them in terms such as my subjects, my servants, my my
- 10:49lowly, my, my people. But he says, my brethren,
- 10:54there's something very, very Christ like about this entire
- 10:59speech coming from King Benjamin, this, this great king
- 11:03who has flipped the Kingdom on its head.
- 11:08Because most kingdoms in the history of time have a king
- 11:13sitting at the apex at the at the pinnacle, where everybody
- 11:17does everything to serve him so he doesn't have to work.
- 11:22And here we get the inverted King perspective where he's at
- 11:27the bottom serving all of them, including here at the very end
- 11:32of his life as he's on the Tower.
- 11:35One of the perspectives you can take as you read through and
- 11:38study these chapters on your own King Benjamin's speech is to
- 11:41pause and analyse. Why is King Benjamin saying
- 11:45this? Why is he teaching that
- 11:47doctrine? What is he trying to get from
- 11:50the people by saying that? Or what benefit is there for him
- 11:55by having him emphasize that teaching, And the answer usually
- 11:59is nothing. He's teaching these things to
- 12:03benefit them, to build this covenantal community.
- 12:08Here at the middle, he is putting his whole soul into
- 12:13these people and consecrating his life to the Lord and
- 12:17demonstrating it beautifully as we go through here.
- 12:20After that introduction, he then says, I have not commanded you
- 12:24to come up, hit her to trifle with the words which I shall
- 12:29speak. Unfortunately, because of the
- 12:33ability of the Internet to to spread voices and to create
- 12:39feelings of expertise among a variety of people teaching a
- 12:45variety of doctrines, it's become very easy for people to
- 12:50trifle with the words of the scriptures and the living
- 12:54prophets. For people to make statements or
- 12:57to make claims about what is really true and what is a nice
- 13:05idea. But you don't have to live it,
- 13:07even if it comes from the prophets, brothers and sisters.
- 13:11The The amazing thing to remember is truth is a knowledge
- 13:15of things as they are, as they were and as they are to come,
- 13:18things as they really are. If you want to take Jacob's
- 13:22definition. And prophets, Sears and
- 13:26revelators like King Benjamin in this context are given certain
- 13:32teachings. And if we choose to trifle with
- 13:35those words, we are the ones who are now going to draw attention
- 13:40to ourselves, drawing attention away from God and away from this
- 13:46covenant community, and putting the focus on ourselves, which is
- 13:50a dangerous place to be. So he says, don't don't trifle
- 13:53with these words which I shall speak, but that you should
- 13:57hearken unto me. Listen, pay attention, obey,
- 14:03Engage with these words, think them through deeply.
- 14:07And then he gives you an invitation to open your ears
- 14:11that you may hear and your hearts that you may understand,
- 14:14and your minds that the mysteries of God may be unfolded
- 14:17to your view. I love that the ears, the hearts
- 14:22and the minds. He wants the whole soul engaged
- 14:25and opened so that when he teaches, all three of those
- 14:30parts of our revelatory capacity will be activated so that we can
- 14:36see, we can hear, we can know, we can feel, and hopefully cause
- 14:43us to do and become something in this covenant or community.
- 14:49So he then goes on to talk about verse 12, this opposite of what
- 14:54you would expect, kind of a Kingdom.
- 14:56I say unto you, that as I have been suffered to spend my days
- 15:01in your service, even up to this time, and have not sought gold,
- 15:04nor silver, nor any manner of riches from you, I have not
- 15:08tried to take from you, and I've not tried to take from this
- 15:14combined Kingdom that we've been building this Zion.
- 15:18I've been infusing it with my life, with my work, with my
- 15:22heart, with my teachings. Verse 13.
- 15:25Neither have I suffered that you should be confined in dungeons,
- 15:28nor that you should make slaves one of another, nor that you
- 15:31should murder or plunder, or steal or commit adultery.
- 15:35Nor even have I suffered that you should commit any manner of
- 15:38wickedness. That five part series that we
- 15:42just read right there, murder, plunder, steal, commit adultery,
- 15:46nor commit any manner of wickedness.
- 15:48That five part series in that order, appears seven other times
- 15:52in the Book of Mormon by subsequent prophets.
- 15:56They keep referring back to this list it it almost becomes one of
- 16:01the foundations for their law in their society moving forward.
- 16:06And they keep reminding the people of what King Benjamin had
- 16:08taught there and then. This beautiful verse.
- 16:13I hope you hear more than just an aged King Benjamin in your in
- 16:18your mind saying these words. I hope you can see beyond the
- 16:22symbol of that incredibly powerful king, and look beyond
- 16:29him to Jesus Christ. Notice what he says.
- 16:33Even I myself have labored with my own hands that I might serve
- 16:41you, and that you should not be laden with taxes, and there
- 16:44should nothing come upon you which was grievous to be born.
- 16:47And all of these things which I have spoken, ye yourselves are
- 16:49witnesses this day. King Benjamin is a beautiful
- 16:52example of that, but it's only because he is modeling his life
- 16:56after the Lord Jesus Christ, who happens to be the only perfect
- 17:01example of those principles in verse 14.
- 17:04It's the Savior, Jesus Christ, who took those burdens, those
- 17:09prison sentences, so to speak, those those difficulties of
- 17:12life, and carried them to the greatest degree possible, so
- 17:18that we would not have to carry them only as absolutely
- 17:23necessary or essential in our in the course of our development
- 17:27and our our discipleship. And I love the motivation.
- 17:32Yet, my brethren, I have not done these things that I might
- 17:35boast. Neither do I tell these things
- 17:38that thereby I might accuse you, But I tell you these things that
- 17:42you may know that I can answer a clear conscience before God this
- 17:45day. If you if you look at the
- 17:47Savior's example from that first line, I have not done these
- 17:51things that I might boast. The beautiful comparison here is
- 17:55found in Doctrine Covenant Section 19 after Jesus Christ
- 17:59shares with Martin Harris and Joseph Smith the incredible
- 18:03depth of his suffering and his pain and the anguish of of body
- 18:08and spirit that He endured for us.
- 18:10After describing all of that in verse 19, he says nevertheless,
- 18:17glory be to the Father. He doesn't boast of himself.
- 18:23He doesn't say, look what I did for you, so therefore give me
- 18:26all the credit. Quite the opposite, he says.
- 18:29Look at all these things that were done for you, therefore
- 18:33give the credit to Heavenly Father.
- 18:36Now that is a beautiful concept that could be applied in our own
- 18:40life, which is is another lifelong learning overlay.
- 18:47Perspective to consider here. If we read our scriptures and
- 18:51study our scriptures, and if we talk of Christ and rejoice of
- 18:55Christ and prophecy of Christ, if we dive in and do these
- 18:59studies and then close our scriptures and go about our
- 19:04daily life unchanged, then we've probably missed the point of the
- 19:11intent of that scripture study. It's intended to help us learn
- 19:17of Christ, to see the beauty of his his perfect example, to
- 19:22taste of the goodness of God and of his grace towards us, so that
- 19:28when we close those scriptures, we now go about our life
- 19:32differently than before. We now go into our
- 19:38relationships, whether they be in the home or in the
- 19:43neighborhood or at work or at school, in the stake, in the
- 19:48branch, in the Relief Society. Whichever organizations we we
- 19:53have relationships in that we now act differently because
- 19:59we're trying to emulate these perfect examples that are shown
- 20:02over and over again. In the scriptures regarding
- 20:06Jesus Christ, so that now we don't do things for other people
- 20:11in order to boast. We don't labour to try to get
- 20:16credit. We don't insist that other
- 20:19people labour for our benefit alone.
- 20:22We keep trying to help others and to infuse our life through
- 20:30Christ like service into this covenantal community, into this
- 20:34feeling of a covenantal belonging, not just belonging in
- 20:38Christ, but belonging in this Zion like society governed by
- 20:45and directed by Jesus Christ. He then gives you this perfect
- 20:50conclusion to this concept in verse 17.
- 20:53And behold, I tell you these things, that you may learn
- 20:56wisdom, that you may learn that when ye are in the service of
- 21:01your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.
- 21:07Now many of you watching have a very difficult task that you're
- 21:16facing. It might be in the form of
- 21:19caring for children with special needs.
- 21:24It might be for parents who are aging, and you're having to make
- 21:30some really hard decisions. And it's it's painful and it
- 21:34might be financially straining, and there might be some emotion
- 21:38and some disagreement among the siblings as to what to do.
- 21:42It might be with a spouse who is struggling with ailing health or
- 21:49struggling with faith or questions and doubts.
- 21:53It might be with a loss of job or financial issues.
- 22:00There are a myriad of problems out there, but the invitation
- 22:05here is that anytime you do anything to help anyone take any
- 22:12step forward, President Nelson has remind us, on that covenant
- 22:16path you were helping to build Zion, you're you're creating
- 22:21this covenant community. You're becoming more Christ
- 22:24like. No kind thought, no kind word,
- 22:27No kind deed is wasted and goes unnoticed.
- 22:31Even if you're a mother at home with small children and nobody's
- 22:37noticing the multiple times you, you change those diapers or
- 22:42soothe those sobs or clean up those messes.
- 22:48Nobody gives you an award, Nobody recognizes you.
- 22:51But the angels are watching and you're infusing into these
- 22:55children or into these settings or into these people and into
- 22:59these relationships. You are sacrificing in a Christ
- 23:02like way, things that will build life and that will lead to this
- 23:08capacity for people to become instruments themselves in the
- 23:13hands of the Lord. And it's beautiful because
- 23:16those, those acts of service are not just being done to those
- 23:20people who are struggling in whatever way they're struggling,
- 23:24they're being done to the Savior himself.
- 23:28You're only in the service of your God.
- 23:31Hopefully that is motivating For any of you who have felt weary,
- 23:35who have felt like when is this going to end?
- 23:39I don't feel like I'm getting anything in return for all of
- 23:44the the intense labour that I'm having to put into this
- 23:47relationship or into this person or into this organization or
- 23:51this quorum or class or whatever the situation may be.
- 23:55It's worth every ounce of effort that we can consecrate.
- 24:01Then he takes it one step further.
- 24:03I love this, this next concept that King Benjamin shares with
- 24:06us, because he really puts things into perspective when he
- 24:10says verse 20. I say unto you, my brethren, And
- 24:14you might consider replacing the words, my brethren, with your
- 24:18own first name, so that you personalize these scriptures,
- 24:22and hopefully hear more than the voice of King Benjamin in your
- 24:26mind speaking to you. But hopefully you hear the voice
- 24:29of the Good Shepherd speaking to you through the words of King
- 24:33Benjamin. I say unto you, Fill in your
- 24:36name that if you should render all the things and praise which
- 24:40your whole soul has power to possess, to that God who has
- 24:44created you, and has kept and preserved you, and has caused,
- 24:46that you should rejoice, and has granted that you should have
- 24:49peace, or live in peace, one with another.
- 24:53I say to you that if you should serve him who's created you from
- 24:56the beginning and is preserving you from day-to-day by lending
- 25:00your breath, that you may live and move and do according to
- 25:02your own will, and even supporting you from one moment
- 25:05to another. I say if you should serve him
- 25:08with all your whole souls holding back nothing, you give
- 25:13everything to him, he says, yet you would be unprofitable
- 25:20servants. Why?
- 25:22Because he has put more into this covenantal relationship
- 25:30that we've labeled as we way more than we are capable of
- 25:35putting into that relationship, we get more out of it than
- 25:39anything we put into it. And King Benjamin's perspective
- 25:41here is the moment you try to put something else into this
- 25:44relationship and serve him and praise him and do these kind
- 25:48things for other people as well. He doth immediately bless you,
- 25:53and he blesses you more than you blessed him.
- 25:57You are an unprofitable servant. And here's the beautiful
- 26:01reality. God's OK with you being an
- 26:05unprofitable servant. You see, it's not that he
- 26:09doesn't want you to pay him back.
- 26:11It's that you can't pay him back.
- 26:13And that's not the plan. Parents don't hold little
- 26:16children thinking, boy, you better pay me back for all that
- 26:21I'm putting into you. That's not what parenting is
- 26:24about. Parenting is about giving to the
- 26:28children. It's about empowering them to
- 26:31then be able to pass on that godly love, those sacrifices,
- 26:37those consecrated efforts in a generational line of faith and
- 26:45devotion and conversion to the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 26:48It's beautiful. He's perfectly OK with us being
- 26:51unprofitable servants. Now the rest of these verses,
- 26:56read or study verse 22 down through verse 41.
- 27:02Try reading through this lens of why is King Benjamin teaching
- 27:08this doctrine and what does he what does he have to gain from
- 27:11the people in teaching that truth?
- 27:13Or replace King Benjamin as the placeholder, the symbol, the
- 27:17metaphor, if you will, for Jesus Christ, the perfect example of
- 27:23the the servant king. And ask yourself these
- 27:27questions. What would the Saviour Jesus
- 27:31Christ have me do differently because of these principles that
- 27:37are being taught in these verses?
- 27:39What is he putting into this relationship with me?
- 27:43And what is he asking me to take out or receive from this
- 27:48relationship, as well as to put into this relationship as we
- 27:51come together both at an individual level, me with
- 27:55Christ, as well as at a communal level, all of us jointly coming
- 28:01together under the direction and the watchful care of Jesus
- 28:06Christ. So you can read these through
- 28:09through both the individual and the collective lens, and it's
- 28:13powerful. Which now brings us to Chapter
- 28:153, which happens to be one of my favorite all time chapters
- 28:23anywhere written this, this is sacred ground.
- 28:28You'll notice a shift when you get to chapter 3, and he gives
- 28:32you an indication as to why it feels a little bit different.
- 28:36And that indication comes in verse two.
- 28:39It says. And the things which I shall
- 28:40tell you are made known unto me by an Angel from God.
- 28:46So these words are going to be very angelic that they're they
- 28:52feel exalting, they feel very high and lofty.
- 28:59Just as a as an example, listen to these words and listen
- 29:05through the lens of people sitting in their tent, facing
- 29:10the temple, facing the Prophet, saying these words to them more
- 29:14than 100 years before Jesus is even born.
- 29:18They hear this, For behold, the time cometh and is not far
- 29:23distant. That with power the Lord
- 29:26Omnipotent who reigneth, who was and is from all eternity to all
- 29:31eternity, shall come down among the children of men, and shall
- 29:35dwell in a Tabernacle of clay, and shall go forth amongst men,
- 29:39working mighty miracles, such as healing the sick, raising the
- 29:45dead, causing the lame to walk the blind to receive their
- 29:48sight, and the deaf to hear, and curing all manner of diseases.
- 29:54Stop and ponder for a for a second.
- 29:58What does Jesus Christ have to gain from leaving heaven
- 30:04condescending from his position as a God, with all of that
- 30:09infinite power and capacity to come down among us the children
- 30:16of men. Take upon him flesh, and then go
- 30:19forth doing all of these things in a Tabernacle of clay.
- 30:22What does he have to gain through this condescension?
- 30:25What is he getting from this covenantal relationship?
- 30:30Can I recommend to you that on the surface, from a world's
- 30:34perspective, he has absolutely nothing to gain.
- 30:38He's just giving. Everything is a sacrifice.
- 30:41Everything is a consecrated effort to benefit other people.
- 30:44If you look only through the lenses of the world.
- 30:48But if you look through the lens of eternity, if you think
- 30:53celestial, if you will, to to use President Nelson's phrase,
- 30:58he is using all of his godly attributes to help us, to refine
- 31:05us, to help perfect us, to forgive us, to build us.
- 31:11It's in giving that you most receive in relationships.
- 31:17It's not in receiving that you most receive, It's in giving.
- 31:23I suggest to you that if you want to become more like the
- 31:27Savior today and this week and this month and this year, that
- 31:33you focus more on this perspective of what can I do to
- 31:39give to others? What can I do to live my life as
- 31:44an instrument in the hands of God?
- 31:46To turn heavenward, to love God, and to turn outward, to love my
- 31:52neighbors as myself, Because that is where you will find the
- 31:57greatest increase of capacity to love.
- 32:01Now watch, He goes on verse seven.
- 32:05He shall suffer temptations and pain of body, hunger, thirst,
- 32:11and fatigue, even more than man can suffer, except it be unto
- 32:15death. For behold, blood cometh from
- 32:19every poor. So great shall be His anguish
- 32:23for the wickedness and abominations of His people, the
- 32:26Saviour's infinite atonement, his descending below all things,
- 32:33his ability to know exactly what you're going through.
- 32:37That perfect empathy, that complete and utter compassion.
- 32:43To be able to mourn with those that mourn and to comfort those
- 32:48that stand in need of comfort. Because he's he's suffered it.
- 32:53He's been there. He knows what we're going
- 32:55through. There's something beautifully
- 32:58refining about that for us that Jesus Christ gives you and me
- 33:05opportunities to practice to become more like Him by putting
- 33:09us in situations and in relationships that need
- 33:13incredible amounts of your time, your talent, your energy, your
- 33:18money, your devotion, your attention.
- 33:21And these are not means of of the Lord punishing you.
- 33:27These are tools the Lord is using to refine our character,
- 33:32to increase our our compassion and our empathy, ultimately to
- 33:37help us become more like and understand more than ever
- 33:41before, the price that was paid to redeem our soul by Jesus
- 33:45Christ Himself, this this incredible middle place of what
- 33:51we can become. And now verse eight, He shall be
- 33:56called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Father of heaven and
- 34:02earth. You noticing the different roles
- 34:04he's assigning here? He's the Christ, He's the Son of
- 34:09God, He's the Father of heaven and earth.
- 34:13He's the creator of all things from the beginning.
- 34:16And his mother shall be called Mary.
- 34:19And then he says, and lo, he cometh unto his own, that
- 34:23salvation might come unto the children of men, even through
- 34:26faith on his name. So he He's setting up the stage
- 34:31for what do we need to do to be able to access everything that
- 34:37Christ has put into this covenantal opportunity to
- 34:42connect with you? The most important being in the
- 34:46universe, the only perfect Son of God, the only one who
- 34:51completely kept the laws and who has infinite capacity and
- 34:56infinite power, is infinitely interested in you and me at A at
- 35:04an intimate level, at a personal level, I love the temple.
- 35:09Recommend question Do you have a testimony of the Atonement of
- 35:14Jesus Christ and of His role as your Saviour and Redeemer?
- 35:21He's inviting us into this incredible covenantal
- 35:27relationship with him. That feeling of covenantal
- 35:29belonging that Elder Gong has mentioned so many times and
- 35:32President Nelson has has beautifully taught from so many
- 35:36different angles. So now if you read the rest of
- 35:41these verses, consider what those covenantal connections
- 35:48cost Jesus Christ and what is he asking us to put into that
- 35:54relationship with him. What is your discipleship going
- 35:58to cost you? What are you going to have to
- 36:01give up? What are some things, whether
- 36:05it's time, energy, money, goals, perspectives, beliefs, passions,
- 36:15What are you going to have to give up to more fully come into
- 36:21this, this middle part of this relationship where we find the
- 36:28this belonging with Christ? If you look down now at verse
- 36:3319, he says, for the natural man is an enemy to God and has been
- 36:38from the fall of Adam and will be forever and ever.
- 36:42So the natural tendency is not to sacrifice, it's not to suffer
- 36:48for other people. It's not to look at others and
- 36:51think what do they need and what could I provide to help them
- 36:57find greater peace and joy on moving forward in the covenant
- 37:02path. That is not a natural tendency.
- 37:05The natural tendency has all of the arrows pointed inward.
- 37:09What can I get from you? How can you serve me?
- 37:13How can you bless my life? So to combat that natural
- 37:18tendency, he goes on to say, we need to yield to the enticings
- 37:23of the Holy Spirit and put off the natural man and become a St.
- 37:29But we can't do this alone. It was never, ever intended for
- 37:35us to become a St. on our own and then present ourselves to
- 37:40Christ. The invitation at the very end
- 37:42of the Book of Mormon in Moroni 10 is come unto Christ and be
- 37:46perfected. In him.
- 37:48We don't get perfected and then present ourselves to Christ.
- 37:51That's exhausting and it's impossible.
- 37:54So he says we've become a St. through the Atonement of Christ
- 37:57the Lord, and we become as a child.
- 38:01Now he's going to give you a long list of childlike
- 38:04attributes. Can I suggest to you that you
- 38:08don't stop in your scripture study at the point of
- 38:13considering children modeling these these beautiful attributes
- 38:17and behaviors? But do you recognize the reality
- 38:21that any good attribute, whether we're using the symbol of a
- 38:26righteous king like Benjamin, or attributes that children
- 38:32demonstrate, that all of those are simple metaphorical
- 38:37placeholders for the ultimate example of all good attributes,
- 38:42which is Jesus Christ himself? So I'm going to take the liberty
- 38:46of changing one word and see if it adds anything to your your
- 38:52understanding of this particular concept.
- 38:55We're going to become a St. through the Atonement of Christ
- 38:57the Lord and becometh as Christ, submissive, meek, humble,
- 39:05patient, full of love, willing to submit to all things which
- 39:11the Lord sees fit to inflict upon Him, even as a child does
- 39:15submit to his Father. Jesus Christ is the perfect
- 39:19example of every single one of those attributes.
- 39:23And at the end of the day, my hope, my desire for me, for my
- 39:28wife, my children, my family, my ward and stake members, for my
- 39:33students is that when we study these kinds of scriptures, we
- 39:37don't walk away saying, oh good. It's kind of like walking
- 39:41through a Museum of scriptures and looking at paintings and
- 39:43statues of ideal scenarios and situations and saying isn't that
- 39:47nice? And then going back out the door
- 39:51to regular life and not changing anything, but rather to look at
- 39:55those words on that page in verse 19 and say Heavenly Father
- 40:00more than anything else, I want to be more like Jesus Christ.
- 40:05I'm not very good at that. Please be patient with me.
- 40:08Please forgive me and help me to be more submissive, to be more
- 40:15meek, to be more humble, more patient, more full of love.
- 40:20Help me to stop being so easily offended.
- 40:24Help me to stop being so hard to to overcome an offence, but to
- 40:30be quick to forgive and to be quick to ask forgiveness.
- 40:36Help me to be more safe in my relationships with people that
- 40:40when they're when they're around me, they're not.
- 40:43They're not walking on egg shells wondering, wondering if
- 40:47if I'm upset at them, but they can feel of God's love through
- 40:52those interactions. Help me.
- 40:55I need to become more like the Saviour.
- 40:58If we collectively are approaching our scripture study
- 41:03as handbooks of instruction or blueprints for a Christ like
- 41:09life, and then we keep working at it every day and every day we
- 41:13wake up in the morning and think, oh good, it's another day
- 41:17to practice coming into this covenantal belonging with Jesus
- 41:23Christ and with my loved ones. And I'm probably not going to be
- 41:27perfect today, but it's another opportunity to practice these
- 41:31principles that I'm studying in the scriptures and I'm going to
- 41:34read more scriptures and I'm going to get more inspiration of
- 41:38ideas of ways I could try to apply these principles in my
- 41:41life. That's when scripture study
- 41:43becomes more engaging, less like busy work, less like I'm
- 41:52checking a box, and more like I'm on a quest.
- 41:56A quest to become more like the Savior.
- 41:58Let me give you a fun little object lesson you can try either
- 42:02yourself or with children or with students.
- 42:05Take a little 3 by 5 card or a small piece of paper and in
- 42:10capital letters write the word that we've been talking about
- 42:16here, two capital letters. Write the word ME on this piece
- 42:23of paper in big bold letters and then walk up to a mirror and
- 42:30hold that piece of paper up to the mirror in front of you flat.
- 42:37And then look in the mirror and what you'll see is the word we.
- 42:50That is one of the the powerful overlays that I wanted to to
- 42:55emphasize from these blocks or from these chapters of Scripture
- 43:00is that the scriptures are helping us look beyond the ME.
- 43:06To be able to see our covenantal connection with God, with our
- 43:11spouse, with our children, with our parents, with our siblings,
- 43:14with our other relatives, with all of those relationships
- 43:19around us. To be able to help us reflect on
- 43:23Christ's goodness and to see those connecting points between
- 43:29US and him and us and each other.
- 43:32And in closing, I wanted to to share this story that was told
- 43:37many years ago in General Conference by President Jeffrey
- 43:40R Holland about a couple who devoted so much to the Lord in a
- 43:51in a very tangible way. This is the story of Peter
- 43:56Nielsen and the Saint George Tabernacle.
- 43:59When it was being built, times were tough, money was scarce,
- 44:04and David Cannon was the one who was in charge of raising the
- 44:09money to get the window panes to put into the Saint George
- 44:14Tabernacle. The cost was $800.
- 44:18He had had them shipped around the Cape to California, but they
- 44:23still owed $800, which at that time was a significant amount of
- 44:28money. Before they could pick them up,
- 44:30there was a certain date on the calendar where the freighter was
- 44:34going to go to California to pick up those windows, and David
- 44:37Cannon had done everything he could to raise money.
- 44:42At the same time, they've been building the temple and the
- 44:44Tabernacle in their own houses and trying to survive in that
- 44:48difficult location at that time, the Cotton Mission.
- 44:52And he'd only raised 200 of the 800 dollars.
- 44:56Well, President Holland says, living in nearby Washington, UT
- 45:02was Peter Nelson, a Danish immigrant who had been saving
- 45:06for years to add on to his modest two room Adobe home on
- 45:11the eve of the freighter's departure for California, Peter
- 45:14spent a sleepless night in that tiny house.
- 45:18He thought of his conversion in far off Denmark and his
- 45:22subsequent gathering for the Saints in America.
- 45:25After coming W, he had settled and struggled to make a living
- 45:28in San Pete. And then, just as some
- 45:30prosperity seemed imminent, there he answered the call to
- 45:32uproot and go to the Cotton Mission, bolstering the pathetic
- 45:36and sagging efforts of the Alkali.
- 45:38Soiled malaria, plagued flood, bedeviled settlers of Dixie.
- 45:43As he lay in bed that night, contemplating his years in the
- 45:46church, he weighed the sacrifices.
- 45:49Asked of him against the wonderful blessings he had
- 45:51received somewhere in those private hours, he made a
- 45:56decision. In the middle of the night.
- 45:58Peter got up. He went to a certain location
- 46:03and he brought out of a secret hiding place, $600 in gold
- 46:07coins. His wife Karen, aroused by the
- 46:09pre dawn bustling, asked why he was up sorely, and he said only
- 46:13that he had to walk quickly the seven miles to Saint George to
- 46:16give $600 to brother David H Cannon.
- 46:20As the first light of morning fell on the beautiful red cliffs
- 46:22of southern Utah, a knock came at brother Cannon's door.
- 46:26There stood Peter Nelson, holding a red bandana which
- 46:30sagged under the weight it carried.
- 46:32Good morning, David, Said Peter. I hope I'm not too late.
- 46:36You will know what to do with this money.
- 46:41With that, he turned on his heel and he retraced his steps back
- 46:45to Washington, back to a faithful and unquestioning wife,
- 46:49and back to a small two room Adobe house that remained just
- 46:54two rooms for the rest of his life.
- 46:59Brothers and sisters, that's one teeny example out of millions
- 47:05that we could give of people who are living their life and who
- 47:10live their life for the we, not for the Me.
- 47:16May the Lord bless us in our efforts to connect more fully
- 47:20with Him and more fully with each other, which is going to
- 47:23cost you something. But oh, what a glorious cost
- 47:27that is, And what the Lord has to give us in return for that
- 47:32service, in whatever form that service may take.
- 47:35He lives, He loves us, and He's the giver of all good gifts and
- 47:41attributes, is my testimony in the name of Jesus Christ.
- 47:45Amen. Know that you're loved.
