- 0:50We're going to speak on what it is to have our
- 0:52treasures in heaven. I feel like this is an important
- 0:55topic as we go through our disciples. episodes.
- 0:59But before we get started with Bobby, I want
- 1:02to introduce today's sponsors of the podcast.
- 1:06And first up we have Clean Monday Meals. Now
- 1:09this is where clean eating meets real flavor.
- 1:13I was tired of mystery ingredients and hidden
- 1:16junk in pretty much everything you buy at the
- 1:19store. But their seasonings, their ramen, you
- 1:23guys need to go check out all their stuff. It
- 1:25only has real ingredients, clean, purposeful
- 1:28seasonings. There's no MSG preservatives or artificial
- 1:30flavors in these. And you're going to find absolutely
- 1:33no seed oils or refined sugars. That's what I
- 1:36love best. So their products are crafted to nourish
- 1:40your body and delight your taste buds. One of
- 1:43my favorite go tos other than their ramen, which.
- 1:47Spoiler alert. They just came out with new flavors.
- 1:50They have beef ramen vegan chicken and a spicy
- 1:55ramen and they're delicious But aside from those
- 1:57the ranch seasoning you guys don't want to miss
- 2:00out on this I like to make homemade wings and
- 2:03I will put it on top of those or I like to make
- 2:05like homemade dips and put some in sour cream
- 2:08It's so delicious But You guys don't want to

- 2:34up next. We have active skin repair guys. This
- 2:39is the all natural healing skin solution that's
- 2:42going to replace everything and your medicine
- 2:45cabinet and your first aid kits and your car,
- 2:47your beach bag, like literally replace it all.
- 2:51So active skin repair. It's a medical grade treatment
- 2:54that works for everyday wound care and skin repair.
- 2:58It's great for those cuts, scrapes, sunburns,
- 3:02normal burns, razor burn, chafing, rashes, insect
- 3:05bites. I literally could keep going on. What
- 3:11I love about it best too is that you can even
- 3:13use it on your pets. You can spray it on their
- 3:14little bottoms of their feet and give them extra
- 3:17hydration. So it's really cool about their product.
- 3:20But like I said, I take it with us. They even
- 3:22have a kids and baby formula. So it's great to
- 3:27get for like baby showers or carrying a diaper
- 3:29bag. Like I said, your beach bag, your home,
- 3:32your car. I carry it with me and use that even
- 3:35as a hand sanitizer. So this magic solution,
- 3:39what it is, is a naturally occurring acid, hydrochloric
- 3:42acid, which already your body already creates.
- 3:45So this is a medical grade. It's a well -studied,
- 3:49clinically proven, used in hospitals for decades.

- 4:11I want y 'all to welcome back Bobby Johnson to
- 4:14the podcast. Bobby, welcome back to the podcast.
- 4:19I want to thank you for joining us today. So,
- 4:22one of my favorite authors, pastors, and just
- 4:25person in this world was Dr. David Jeremiah.
- 4:28And I really have learned a lot from him over
- 4:30the years. But I try to get his books whenever
- 4:34they come out. And I picked one up that was called
- 4:38The Promise of Heaven. And it's just such a good
- 4:40read. But I came to a chapter called The Currency
- 4:44of Heaven. And I wanted to share some of that
- 4:47with you and the audience today. The chapter
- 4:51started out with a story of a man who played
- 4:54the lottery. It was like 1 in 50 million chance
- 4:58to win. Well, story short, he won. And he decided
- 5:02to go to the dentist and get much needed work
- 5:06on his teeth. And while he was there, he collapsed
- 5:09and had a heart attack and passed away. Now,
- 5:13I don't tell that story to be womp -womp. but
- 5:16I say it because it reminds us that our time
- 5:20here on earth is so short. Our lives are brief.
- 5:24And he went on in the chapter stating, David
- 5:31that he said, Lord, remind me how brief my time
- 5:34on earth will be. Remind me that my days are
- 5:37numbered. And this is why it's so important for
- 5:40us to focus on storing up our treasures in heaven
- 5:44and not on earth where moth and dust destroy.
- 5:49So where thieves break into steel, but we lay
- 5:52up our treasures ourselves. We lay up ourselves
- 5:55treasures in heaven and that's Matthew 6 19 through
- 5:5820. So Bobby, I want to ask you. What does it
- 6:03mean exactly to lay up our treasures in heaven?
- 6:07And why should we invest in heaven? Well, that's
- 6:11a great question, right? And I love that intro
- 6:16because we can get consumed with things. And
- 6:22it's not to say that things like, you know, having
- 6:26good finances, getting our teeth taken care of,
- 6:30right, are bad things. But when that's where
- 6:34we put our hope. Then we we run into trouble
- 6:38and that is the world's way of doing things but
- 6:42in that scripture verses 19 through 21 Where
- 6:47it does say, you know store up your treasures
- 6:49in heaven where moths and rust cannot destroy
- 6:52And we we look at that and say but why so if
- 6:56you look at verse 21 it says wherever your treasure
- 7:00is the desires of your heart will also be and
- 7:06Again, this tells us why because when we do lay
- 7:10up treasures in heaven then our heart is going
- 7:13to follow suit and You know scripture tells us
- 7:19that our hearts are naturally wicked and deceitful
- 7:23Mm -hmm that we are inclined to follow the ways
- 7:27of this world but as believers we're to be kingdom
- 7:32minded and when we live for Christ that is where
- 7:39our focus needs to be. And, you know, in scripture
- 7:42there are many references to rewards for believers
- 7:46who follow Jesus faithfully. So I look at Luke
- 7:51chapter 6 verses 22 through 23 says that a great
- 7:55reward is waiting for those who suffer for Jesus'
- 7:58sake. Second Timothy 4 8 mentions many crowns
- 8:02that will receive. Revelation 22 12 says that
- 8:06when Jesus returns he will bring rewards So these
- 8:11are all benefits of following Christ and it's
- 8:14not what we shoot for It's not like we're doing
- 8:16it because oh, well, I'm gonna be rewarded but
- 8:20our greatest treasure is Jesus himself and When
- 8:25we live that way, we will commit all we have
- 8:29to him our time our gifts our finances And then
- 8:34the desires of our heart become kingdom focused,
- 8:38right? When we give and we live sacrificially
- 8:42by serving the body of Christ and sharing the
- 8:46good news with others, this is where this comes
- 8:49into play. This is, it's like a cycle, a godly
- 8:55cycle. And none of it goes unnoticed by God.
- 9:00And again, we are storing up treasures in heaven.
- 9:05I do believe that it's important to revisit that
- 9:08verse 21 because it reminds us that laying up
- 9:11these treasures in heaven will change the desires
- 9:14of our hearts, so to kind of go back on that
- 9:16and focus on that a little bit more. As I said,
- 9:19our hearts are not naturally inclined towards
- 9:21godly living. Scripture tells us in Jeremiah
- 9:2517, 9, as I said, the human heart is the most
- 9:28deceitful of all things and desperately wicked.
- 9:33That's ouchy. But that's truth. It's easy for
- 9:39us to get caught up in all that this world deems
- 9:44as treasure. That's not what we're called to
- 9:48pursue. We may come to have some of these things,
- 9:52like I said, wealth, the ability to have good
- 9:56dental work. Whatever you fill in the blank there,
- 9:59it doesn't mean that it's bad necessarily. But
- 10:01it's all God's anyway. Right. He gives it to
- 10:04us. But if that's our treasure... Yeah. If that's
- 10:07the only thing we put our hope in and where our
- 10:10heart focuses, it's not what God wants for us.
- 10:14His abundance is so much more. Yeah. So only
- 10:19two things in this world are eternal, and that's
- 10:22God's Word and people. It makes perfect sense
- 10:25for us to build our lives around those two things
- 10:28that will last forever. In Psalms 119, 89 says,
- 10:33forever, O Lord, your word is settled in heaven.
- 10:37He shares in this chapter that the apostle Peter
- 10:39wrote, all people are like grass, and all their
- 10:43glory is like the flowers of the field. The grass
- 10:46weathers and the flowers fall, but the word of
- 10:49God endure forever. 1 Peter 1, 24 through 25.
- 10:55All the books we learn from now and study won't
- 10:59be going to heaven with us. The verses we memorize
- 11:02now, those will be what we have and can take
- 11:04with us. So one thing that really stuck out to
- 11:08me was that the Lord is so delighted when we
- 11:10speak about him that he notates our words in
- 11:13a special book in heaven. Many times in the book
- 11:17of Revelation, we read about the book of life.
- 11:22In Revelation 2012, it says, on the day of judgment,
- 11:25the books will be opened, revealing the attitudes
- 11:28and actions of all humanity. We won't be all
- 11:32knowing in heaven, but we will still be able
- 11:34to learn and possess knowledge. We will be students
- 11:39for eternity. And I feel like this is why it's
- 11:43so important to be disciples. So he went on to
- 11:48explain, this is why it's important because we
- 11:50can lead and help win others to the Lord. And
- 11:53this is urgent, especially in these times that
- 11:56we are in. We need to help others find salvation
- 11:59and find it now. We do this by the testimonies
- 12:03we share, the tasks we pursue, and the treasures
- 12:06and offerings we invest in the kingdom. Many
- 12:11people have devoted their lives to winning people
- 12:14to Christ. I know that when I walk through my
- 12:16cancer journey, I use every appointment, treatment,
- 12:20situation to shine my light of Jesus on the others
- 12:23and sharing the word with them. So declaring
- 12:26what Jesus was doing for me and healing me. We
- 12:31must let our friends and loved ones know we're
- 12:34going to heaven and we want to see them with
- 12:36us. I know that when I pass away, I want people
- 12:40to remember me for my faith, have comfort in
- 12:44knowing I'm in the arms of Jesus and heaven is
- 12:47my eternal home. Our testimonies can make a difference
- 12:51in the lives of others if we simply just voice
- 12:54them. Bobby, I want to thank you for voicing
- 12:57yours in season four. You had quite the journey
- 13:00and letting others know into your story is a
- 13:03blessing. Our testimonies aren't just for us,
- 13:06but to come for others and knowing they aren't
- 13:08alone and we can help them through whatever they
- 13:10are walking through. Now, if you didn't hear
- 13:13Bobby's testimony, please go back and listen
- 13:15to it because it was amazing. It was season four,
- 13:18episode 10. We all have tasks and personal ministry
- 13:24to pursue. The Bible says, be steadfast, immovable,
- 13:29always abounding in the work of the Lord. Knowing
- 13:32your labor is not in vain in the Lord. 1 Corinthians
- 13:3515, 58. Paul wrote this word to ordinary members
- 13:40in the sometimes troubled church in Corinth.
- 13:44Whatever God is calling us to do, We need to
- 13:47do it faithfully, prayerfully, and cheerfully.
- 13:52This is going to produce good fruit for the kingdom.
- 13:55Now, some people never hear the gospel preached.
- 13:59So what if you were the first one to tell them
- 14:01about Jesus and then lead and train them up in
- 14:04the way of the Lord? Bobby, do you have any task
- 14:07or personal ministry you're pursuing? I know
- 14:10you do, but I want you to share it. That's okay.
- 14:13I appreciate that. And let me just say too, in
- 14:17terms of my testimony, I just want to reiterate,
- 14:20I guess, and give God the glory for that because
- 14:27without Him we wouldn't have a testimony. And
- 14:34so I'm just so grateful to be able to share.
- 14:40And again, I thank you for allowing me to be
- 14:42a part of this because It's a great opportunity
- 14:45to share what goes on in life and apply God's
- 14:51Word and be a part of God moving in our community.
- 14:56So it's just really cool. So, you know, this
- 14:59has been a part of it and I am thankful for you
- 15:02and for your obedience because in that you're
- 15:05allowing other people in, you know, giving them
- 15:10a way to share and so... I think those opportunities
- 15:17are always around us. As you know, I'm in a season
- 15:23of preparing for pastoral ministry. My heart
- 15:31continues to be burdened for those in that recovery
- 15:38space. We've been through that journey in our
- 15:44own family and being able to use that experience
- 15:50to walk alongside other people who are experiencing
- 15:54the same thing has been one of the hardest things,
- 16:00but yet one of the biggest blessings that God
- 16:02has brought to my life. And, you know, in that
- 16:07space, working with individuals, families, those
- 16:10caring for children impacted by addiction. And
- 16:15when I say addiction too, I include not just
- 16:18substances, but I'm talking alcohol as well.
- 16:22You know, more people die every day from alcoholism
- 16:26than substance use per se. And yet we tend to,
- 16:33that gets overshadowed, right? So it's my little
- 16:36soapbox Okay But looking back I think the call
- 16:42to being a pastor was really rooted in my work
- 16:46with families impacted by addiction and It started
- 16:51with the family recovery program that we started
- 16:56out of our church and You know and while it was
- 17:00a good program. It is a good program. It's a
- 17:02faith -based program I kept coming back to the
- 17:07main thing that Jesus is where true recovery
- 17:11true redemption comes from and that's true whether
- 17:16you're impacted by addiction or any form of bondage
- 17:23or anything that you're impacted in this life
- 17:28so Again coming back to the the main thing to
- 17:33Jesus and that no matter what we face and then
- 17:37You know, he's there. He is the answer. He is
- 17:40where redemption that's he's where healing is
- 17:43found And so I kept coming back to that. I still
- 17:45come back to that And it was a couple years after
- 17:50that I recognized God's call on my life. So,
- 17:54you know again it wasn't like in starting the
- 17:59support group or working with people in this
- 18:02space and becoming involved because it did lead
- 18:04to other opportunities where you could share
- 18:08and share your faith and the importance of spiritual
- 18:13wellness specifically that that only comes from
- 18:18Christ. It was it was amazing but it wasn't like
- 18:23even in the early times of that that I recognized.
- 18:26God's call wasn't until later of my call into
- 18:30pastoral ministry. But, you know, even with you're
- 18:37still in a season of preparation. So that's that's
- 18:39for me. And you and I were just talking before
- 18:43we got on here today about, you know, I have
- 18:47and I feel like I just need to share this. I
- 18:50have times even in this preparation where I want
- 18:55to give up. and I have named these times now
- 18:59as my walk away weeks because it always seems
- 19:01to happen within that time frame and sometimes
- 19:06they last even longer those periods of time and
- 19:09it's not that I'm losing faith it's just that
- 19:13I think I just feel so burdened and ill -equipped
- 19:20and just tired wrestling with God you know recognizing
- 19:28my call but but really really having a hard time
- 19:34and and and frankly those are the times when
- 19:38I'm probably you know I'm trying to do things
- 19:42myself you know am I not right relying on him
- 19:47I don't know but anyhow so that's that's part
- 19:51of it You know, I think We can get this viewpoint
- 19:56of Preparation or personal ministry and it looks
- 20:00very flowery Whitewashed if you will and that
- 20:06is at least in my experience that has not been
- 20:10the case but that is what I think in the end
- 20:14makes it so beautiful and because God ultimately
- 20:18is going to use that to come alongside and has
- 20:21already used it to come alongside people in really
- 20:24dark yucky places so what good would it be for
- 20:30me to do that and be called to do that if i too
- 20:33am not experiencing that yeah so yeah i can't
- 20:37wait to get to have him one day and he just shows
- 20:39us what it all was for it's gonna be so cool
- 20:42i will take one big sigh of relief yeah i i i
- 20:45will admit but it's all worth it So Dr. David
- 20:53Jeremiah went on to say that the treasures we
- 20:56invest in are also important, which he talked
- 20:59about. So we have the joy of expanding the kingdom
- 21:01through investing our treasures through tithes,
- 21:04gifts, and offerings to the Lord. I think this
- 21:08is what Jesus meant when he said laying up our
- 21:10treasures in heaven. Now, of course, we aren't
- 21:13to neglect our futures or our families. We need
- 21:17to have discernment and be wise and faithful
- 21:19providers. but we should see it as a privilege
- 21:23to further the population of heaven. This could
- 21:26be as simple as being a disciple and sending
- 21:29Bibles into the hands that have never read the
- 21:31Bible or had one in their lives. Your testimony,
- 21:36task, and treasures don't need to be perfect,
- 21:39says Jeremiah. God's Word and human souls are
- 21:43eternal. We can't take much with us to heaven,
- 21:46but May God fill our hearts with his word and
- 21:50with that message let's determine to take as
- 21:52many people as possible to heaven with us. So
- 21:56my own personal journey, even if someone you
- 21:58love so much doesn't want to hear the word or
- 22:00feels as though they need saving, we still need
- 22:04to be praying hard for those individuals. You
- 22:08don't know where or what those prayers are leading
- 22:10to. We don't know how God is using those prayers
- 22:13to work on those individuals. I believe that
- 22:16maybe people can still be saved through our prayers.
- 22:21You know, Bobby, I feel like God speaks to us
- 22:23in many ways and we can use that for our own
- 22:26personal testimonies and to disciple others through
- 22:30our journeys. I think next episode we will go
- 22:33further details of just how God speaks to us
- 22:37and how we can use that to disciple others. But
- 22:40do you have anything to leave my listeners with
- 22:42today? Well, I would just encourage Folks and
- 22:47this this is actually something a story that
- 22:50a friend of mine told me just yesterday And it
- 22:53was very encouraging to me in its simplicity
- 22:57So I would share it I'm not gonna share names
- 23:02and specifics that way because I didn't actually
- 23:05talk to this person about Sharing it. However,
- 23:08I do think the overall story is incredibly beautiful
- 23:12and points to how important it is to just live
- 23:19out your faith in the everyday moments and how
- 23:24impactful they can be because God puts you where
- 23:29he wants to put you. So it's not like you've
- 23:33got to have this great plan of I'm going to go
- 23:35out and I'm going to minister. I mean it is yes
- 23:38to a degree. but to not lose sight of the everyday
- 23:43moments where God uses us to be Jesus to someone
- 23:50in need. And so my friend was sharing the story
- 23:54about how she was out for one of her daily walks
- 23:57and she lives out in the country and so she was
- 24:03coming up on this older country cemetery out
- 24:07where she walks. There was no one around and
- 24:11she just saw the single truck there and a man
- 24:15standing at a gravestone just sobbing and Now
- 24:21mind you they're out like it's very rural, right?
- 24:23There's nobody else around it's not like it's
- 24:25in town or anything Not that that would really
- 24:27matter. But you know, yes this was I think it
- 24:30just points to the divine providence in all of
- 24:33this but the man was standing at the gravestone
- 24:37and he was crying so hard he was trying she could
- 24:41see as he was walking she was walking up on him
- 24:43that he was trying to wipe his face free of tears
- 24:47with his forearms and he was by himself and Her
- 24:53path was going about to intersect with him. So
- 24:55she's coming up on him and She stopped and she
- 25:00said to him You look like you could use a hug
- 25:04She did not know this person and he turned around
- 25:09and just in his distress leaned into her gave
- 25:14her this hug and she said and I mean it was a
- 25:16hug like he just so desperately needed comfort
- 25:21and that embrace and so she she hugged him stepped
- 25:29away from him and she asked him is this your
- 25:35wife's grave? and he nodded and said yes and
- 25:41she said she wasn't sure what to say but she
- 25:46said I'm sure that she's at peace hopeful that
- 25:51she would have been and she said the gentleman
- 25:55just kind of shook his head back and forth and
- 26:01she said she just came right out and said to
- 26:05him you saved and he said I honestly don't know
- 26:11and so just just pause there for a minute imagine
- 26:16this right you're out the middle there's nobody
- 26:20around it's a secluded cemetery out in the country
- 26:23and here comes this person whom you do not know
- 26:26and likewise for her she's coming up on somebody
- 26:29like she didn't know him from Adam right and
- 26:32Yet God orchestrated that moment and in that
- 26:37because of her obedience and just Not because
- 26:40of a plan Not because she went out walking that
- 26:44day with the intent of evangelizing but because
- 26:48God put somebody in her path and She was able
- 26:52to literally embrace him share with him and share
- 26:56the path to salvation with this stranger And
- 27:02it wasn't awkward. It's just God had orchestrated
- 27:05just every moment and the timing and all of it.
- 27:08And while he did not pray with her in that moment,
- 27:12he did allow her to share how to be right with
- 27:16the Lord. And perhaps the most important part
- 27:21of that, aside from the fact that she led him
- 27:24to the opportunity of salvation. But that God
- 27:28was made so real to that man that day through
- 27:33a person Who loves Jesus who happened to be out
- 27:37for her walk? That is beautiful. That is that
- 27:42is to me more profound than any Formalized ministry
- 27:48program Outreach. I mean not that those things
- 27:52aren't beautiful in and of themselves. They are
- 27:54but I think Again, what I would want to leave
- 27:58people with is to be encouraged that as believers,
- 28:03God can and does provide us with those opportunities
- 28:07every single day, if we're willing to look for
- 28:12them and willing to be obedient in the small
- 28:15things. And as it turned out, she did find out
- 28:21who that individual was. And she now, because
- 28:26she walks on that route, she's already intended
- 28:28to leave him some information in a ziplock bag
- 28:33there by the gravestone for when he comes back.
- 28:37And so, you know, she's planted that seed. She's
- 28:43tangibly demonstrated God's love to him. And
- 28:47that can only, in his heart, can you imagine?
- 28:52that he had to walk away from that and be like,
- 28:55wow. Yeah. Like, what was that? Yeah. You know,
- 28:59and he cares about me. That's that it's God's
- 29:04love. And she demonstrated in a very simple,
- 29:08unplanned way, just because she walks with Jesus
- 29:13and she wants to do for him. And he provided
- 29:16her with an opportunity. It wasn't any more complicated
- 29:19than that. So Such a beautiful story. Wow. Glad
- 29:23you shared that. Yeah. Glad she shared it with
- 29:25me so I could pass it on. And like how sobering
- 29:29it is to like the part where he's shaking his
- 29:35head because his wife wasn't saved. Like that
- 29:38should be so sobering to us to want to share
- 29:45Jesus with people because It's interesting that
- 29:48you point that part out because actually when
- 29:50she was telling me that story, that was one of
- 29:53the things that really stood out to me. Like
- 29:55that hurts my heart so much. Yeah because that
- 29:58to me speaks to God's grace having been working
- 30:04on that man's heart. That he was prepared to
- 30:08answer that in the most honest way without hesitation
- 30:13that there had been some thought given to that.
- 30:18And in his loss that God was already preparing
- 30:21his heart. That's what I that's what stuck out
- 30:23to me in that whether or not That's the case.
- 30:25I do not know that yeah, but Because in those
- 30:29times, you know when you talk to somebody who
- 30:31doesn't know the Lord We know That they lack
- 30:37understanding scripture tells us that but Through
- 30:41his grace God prepares their hearts and that's
- 30:44what allows someone to eventually Come to a saving
- 30:49knowledge of Christ Because God allows it in
- 30:52that moment through his grace. And so it just
- 30:54was a testimony to me that God was working that
- 30:59Long before she put her shoes on to go for a
- 31:03walk. So cool, you know good stuff So to my listeners
