Latest / The Catholic Current / LTACL: DDF Reads Mad Magazine? (Fr. Robert McTeigue, S.J.)
Transcript
- 0:00I had an amazing insight recently, maybe it's a function of me getting older, but I think
- 0:05I'm connecting dots in a way that I hadn't seen the dots connect before.
- 0:09Hear me out.
- 0:10Do you remember Mad Magazine?
- 0:13I don't know if it's still in print, but if you are of a certain age, you may remember
- 0:18that it was a brilliantly funny satirical magazine that parodied just about everything.
- 0:28And honestly, I grew up with Mad Magazine.
- 0:30I spent a lot of my youth reading Mad Magazine.
- 0:35I know that probably explains a whole lot.
- 0:39In particular, I remember a parody they did about advertisement where advertisers said
- 0:45things that were true, but nonetheless misleading.
- 0:50For example, if you were selling chocolate chip cookies, you could put on your packaging
- 0:55contains absolutely no motor oil or no one ever died eating our brands.
- 1:02Now that's true and it makes you think about, well, gosh, what are the other brands like
- 1:08that you have to make warnings about death and motor oil and so on.
- 1:13And yeah, a lot of advertisers work that way and they're not lying, but they are misleading
- 1:19and it's worth poking fun at them.
- 1:21But what if somebody important, maybe even someone from the senior Catholic cadre of
- 1:30the People Who Really Should Know Better Club said, you know what, that might be a good
- 1:36way to do theology or at least run a consistory.
- 1:41Stay with me.
- 1:42I've got a story to tell.
- 1:43Hi, I'm Jesuit Father Robert McTague, your host every day of The Catholic Current, coming
- 1:46to you from the Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network.
- 1:50Let's take a closer look.
- 1:52Glad you're here.
- 1:53Mad Magazine did a parody of advertisers, doing a little sleight of hand, a little bit
- 1:59of misdirection, saying things that were not untrue, but were misleading.
- 2:08And logically or debate, we would call this a straw man argument.
- 2:13You attribute to your opponent an argument that he didn't make and then shame him for
- 2:19it.
- 2:20You know, I think we shouldn't support the beating of wives and the strangling of puppies,
- 2:28whereas my opponent, well, it's better left unsaid.
- 2:31Well, wait a minute, I didn't.
- 2:34So it wasn't untrue, but it was misleading.
- 2:37Well, why am I connecting this with the recent consistory of cardinals in Rome and the Dicastery
- 2:45for the Doctrine of the Faith?
- 2:47You know, I've been working on a series about the consistory and the different documents
- 2:54that were given.
- 2:55I want to look at the document given on preaching that was given to the cardinals by Cardinal
- 3:01Fernandez, who is the prefect of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.
- 3:06And to summarize what he said, it was along these lines, well, you know, not every aspect
- 3:14of Catholic doctrine and dogma has the same weight.
- 3:19Well, okay, but I don't think anybody did.
- 3:22But never you mind, because Cardinal Fernandez is just throwing up these straw men and setting
- 3:27them up on fire.
- 3:29Well, you know, when you're preaching the gospel, when you're preaching the good news,
- 3:34when you're preaching the living Christ, you don't have to summarize absolutely every single
- 3:41point of doctrine and make it just a tedious teaching.
- 3:45Well, okay, but who did suggest that?
- 3:50I want to know, who are these guys?
- 3:54What preaching has his eminence heard that has him so worked up?
- 4:02Do they exist at all, in which case I'd like to read them and evaluate them for myself.
- 4:09Or maybe, just maybe, hear me out, maybe I'm just getting old and I'm connecting dots
- 4:16that I didn't see connectable before, or maybe I'm connecting dots that aren't there.
- 4:22But it seems to me that this kind of talk is laying the ground for, I don't want to
- 4:32say an excuse, but a rationale for why we're going to put some aspects of Catholic teaching
- 4:43on the down low.
- 4:46Maybe I'm being a little bit too suspicious.
- 4:49Maybe a bitter experience has taught me to be cautious.
- 4:53We shall see.
- 4:54So here's my invitation for you.
- 4:57We're going to talk about this for a whole hour on Friday, January 30th, 2026, at 5 p.m.
- 5:05Eastern, on The Catholic Current.
- 5:08You can hear me at thestationofthecross.com or your favorite podcast platform, and I want
- 5:14you to be there with me because this will be the second of my three-part series on the
- 5:19inconsistent consistory.
- 5:23I'm not feeling confident that we're being dealt from an honest deck.
- 5:29I think there might be a little three-card Monty going on here.
- 5:33I hope that I'm wrong.
- 5:34Meanwhile, think on these things today, take them to prayer, and talk about it with those
- 5:38you love.
- 5:39Go in peace, and please do pray for me, for I am a sinner.
