- 0:00Shelly Bond: Not gonna happen on International Clash Day.
- 0:04Tad Eggleston: No interesting things about International Clash Day? I thought that guaranteed interesting things.
- 0:12Shelly Bond: Just trying to be ironic.
- 0:14Tad Eggleston: Well, that's true. Okay. So, we just started, so, so, so good evening, everybody. Welcome back to 22 Panels. My, my guests tonight are Shelly and Philip Bond. I think this is actually the first time I've had the two of you on together. I've had you…
- 0:30Shelly Bond: That's impossible. You think?
- 0:32Shelly Bond: I think we were on together during Geezer, although I think that Philip was in the upstairs studio.
- 0:38Tad Eggleston: Maybe.
- 0:39Shelly Bond: We were being.
- 0:39Tad Eggleston: I… I know that at least one of the times he came on for Geezer, it was just with…
- 0:47Tad Eggleston: with, Will.
- 0:49Tad Eggleston: Yeah. So, yeah.
- 0:52Shelly Bond: There have been 3 issues of Geezer still available.
- 0:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 0:54Shelly Bond: Register.press.
- 0:56Tad Eggleston: That's right.
- 0:57Shelly Bond: For all your breadpop needs.
- 0:59Tad Eggleston: Or even if you… even just your comic book needs.
- 1:03Shelly Bond: Yes.
- 1:04Tad Eggleston: I mean, it's not required to be a Britpop. It helps to be a Britpop fan.
- 1:08Shelly Bond: Just general cultural…
- 1:09Tad Eggleston: But you can thoroughly enjoy Geezer with no knowledge of Britpop.
- 1:14Shelly Bond: But if you like K-pop, especially K-pop Demon Hunters, you might like Geezer.
- 1:19Tad Eggleston: You know? That's the way to… that's definitely the way to drive your sales.
- 1:25Shelly Bond: Yeah, we're gonna do, like, the anime version.
- 1:27Tad Eggleston: K-Pop Demon Hunters is exactly like Britpop, and you need to buy Geezer.
- 1:33Tad Eggleston: And I love your cat.
- 1:36Tad Eggleston: I don't know if I've met your cat before.
- 1:38Shelly Bond: We have two kids, well…
- 1:41Shelly Bond: They're troublemakers, they're gonna ruin this interview, so if we say something embarrassing, we can blame it on one or both of them.
- 1:50Tad Eggleston: I'm always… I'm always blaming things on Eddie.
- 1:54Tad Eggleston: The other three cats are well-behaved, but Eddie is… is… is the devil, and he's… he's the one that's in the 22 Panels logo now, because he…
- 2:04Shelly Bond: Named after Eddie Van Helen, I imagine.
- 2:07Tad Eggleston: No, actually, my wife names animals after artists and…
- 2:13Tad Eggleston: and, foods, so his full name is Edgar Gala Apple, after Edgar Degas.
- 2:21Tad Eggleston: Dala Apples.
- 2:24Shelly Bond: Alright, fair enough.
- 2:26Tad Eggleston: Nope.
- 2:27Shelly Bond: Okay.
- 2:27Tad Eggleston: So… Eddie.
- 2:29Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 2:29Shelly Bond: After Ed was taken out. So.
- 2:32Tad Eggleston: First, obviously, we need to… we need to plug…
- 2:36Tad Eggleston: the… the… I think you dropped the ball on making it 100 FAQ rather than 101, but… but you have corrected me, so the 100 frequently asked questions in comics. Give me your pitch, Shelly.
- 2:52Shelly Bond: Well, why do you think I dropped the ball by not…
- 2:55Tad Eggleston: I don't know, 101 just seems cooler.
- 2:59Shelly Bond: 1016…
- 3:00Tad Eggleston: That's like your introductory class, it's like your, you know.
- 3:04Shelly Bond: Well, we did use, we did use 101 for when you did the filth and grammar classes online.
- 3:11Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 3:12Shelly Bond: We did use… we did call that Filth and Grammar 101, actually. Haha. See? So there. But, you know, the reason why we said 100 is because Kickstarter has a Make100.
- 3:24Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 3:25Shelly Bond: Every January, and we've wanted to do this for a couple of years, and…
- 3:30Shelly Bond: not that we always have to do our crowdfunding on Kickstarter, but it's worked well for us for the past 10 years, and it seemed like a good idea, and it's easy to wrap your head around 100.
- 3:42Shelly Bond: 101, there's a cuteness to it, but I think 100 was pretty solid, and it gave us a hard out.
- 3:51Tad Eggleston: syndromes.
- 3:52Tad Eggleston: That's just… I'm… I like palindromes.
- 3:55Shelly Bond: Well, that doesn't surprise me, knowing you, Matt.
- 4:01Shelly Bond: But…
- 4:01Tad Eggleston: So 202 would have worked for me, too.
- 4:04Shelly Bond: Alright, well, why don't you write 202 FAQs? I feel like a palindrome of 101 FAQ would be Quaff 101. Which isn't bad. It sounds like there would be, like, a free hairstyling guide in the back of the book. Alright. Hey, amateur, how to cut your… how to cut your bangs.
- 4:22Tad Eggleston: See?
- 4:23Shelly Bond: Right?
- 4:24Tad Eggleston: We make a good team, Shelly.
- 4:27Shelly Bond: That won't.
- 4:28Tad Eggleston: I say… I ask crazy questions, and you come up with good ideas from this.
- 4:32Shelly Bond: Listen, I… I sell it like I see it, and I've said it's 100 of the most
- 4:40Shelly Bond: asked questions in my time making comics, from when I was an editorial ingenue answering phones at Comiko, to teaching comics editing. So, it's questions from, that run the gamut, from
- 4:55Shelly Bond: artists and creators I've worked with, to students I've met, to people I meet at conventions, to the guy sitting to my right, who sometimes has questions about my editing style, and whether I'm gonna stop taking stock in red pens, and the answer to that is no.
- 5:14Shelly Bond: Never.
- 5:16Shelly Bond: So it's the weird ones, and it's also the basics, so you, Tad, can avoid the blunders when you and Eddie decide to finally make your own zine or comic book.
- 5:25Tad Eggleston: I'll do my best.
- 5:27Tad Eggleston: But, the blunders are what makes it fun, Shelly.
- 5:30Shelly Bond: I agree. I agree. It's rolling up your sleeves and getting…
- 5:33Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I think half of the fun of the book is that, like, you get to see.
- 5:38Shelly Bond: What people are asking, and what… what blunders other people are making.
- 5:43Tad Eggleston: Absolutely.
- 5:44Shelly Bond: And most of the best… the best answers involve somebody making a blunder at some point in order to find
- 5:51Shelly Bond: The right way to go.
- 5:53Shelly Bond: And it's usually… it's a matter of taste and style, because as we know, art is subjective. Yeah. So one person's fine art is another person's garbage, and we just all have to admit that urgent art is…
- 6:10Shelly Bond: so important.
- 6:12Shelly Bond: means something different to everyone, and I'm hoping that this book is the kind of thing you're gonna put on your bookshelf, Ted, right next to the Black Crown Omnibus, Fast Times and Comic Book Editing, Art Spiegelman's breakdowns.
- 6:27Tad Eggleston: Yeah, I doubt that.
- 6:28Shelly Bond: all the comics and hardcovers, the Best of Punk Magazine, All those wonderful things.
- 6:36Tad Eggleston: Hi, doppelganger. It's still at my bedside.
- 6:39Shelly Bond: Tad is forgetting that this is an audio podcast only.
- 6:42Tad Eggleston: Yeah, that was for you.
- 6:43Shelly Bond: He keeps thinking he's on video, and he's just totally trying to kiss my butt again by showing Phillip and I that he backed every…
- 6:52Tad Eggleston: Which we appreciate. If I wanted to go that far, I would, like, have gone and dug up heavy rotation or something.
- 6:59Shelly Bond: Or you would just… you would have been having a seance, and you would have brought Joe Strummer onto the show today.
- 7:05Tad Eggleston: I mean, I tried. I did. I did try.
- 7:08Tad Eggleston: It didn't work. I'm not good at seances.
- 7:11Shelly Bond: Well, maybe you need to do 101 FAQs. Probably busy today.
- 7:17Tad Eggleston: I did… I did ask you a Joe Stromer-related question, even before… even before I knew it was Clash Day.
- 7:24Shelly Bond: We should get… we should get to that later, but Philip just came up with something profound.
- 7:29Shelly Bond: Please repeat what you just said. You said that you thought Joe Strummer would be exceptionally busy today. Yeah, he's probably got a, like, full calendar today. Because? Because it's International Class Day!
- 7:42Shelly Bond: And one of us out of three came dressed for International Clash Day. Guess who it is not? Guess who is not dressed appropriately?
- 7:51Shelly Bond: I'm not, no. And?
- 7:53Tad Eggleston: I'm not.
- 7:54Shelly Bond: Okay.
- 7:55Tad Eggleston: I got Paul McCartney on.
- 7:57Shelly Bond: Oh, that… does not qualify as anything substantial in my book, no offense.
- 8:05Tad Eggleston: It's the Simpsons version.
- 8:07Shelly Bond: Yeah, I… I have… I have Combat Rock in my heart.
- 8:11Shelly Bond: I did.
- 8:12Tad Eggleston: Listen to Live Clash from the time you told me it was International Class Day until…
- 8:18Tad Eggleston: I stopped listening to music today.
- 8:20Tad Eggleston: So…
- 8:21Shelly Bond: Right.
- 8:22Shelly Bond: And…
- 8:24Tad Eggleston: And… from Bonds Casino in New York.
- 8:28Shelly Bond: Whoa.
- 8:29Shelly Bond: That's hardcore.
- 8:32Tad Eggleston: That's like…
- 8:33Shelly Bond: That was my dream, to, like, be one of those kids that got in the back door of that show.
- 8:39Tad Eggleston: True story, I'll make it quick. Those shows. There were 11 of them.
- 8:43Shelly Bond: Right?
- 8:45Shelly Bond: First of all… What is this?
- 8:48Tad Eggleston: 1?
- 8:49Tad Eggleston: I thought it was late 70s.
- 8:51Shelly Bond: It was 79. I want to just tell you a quick story, it's a true story. You were there? No. No, I said I wasn't there. I said I wanted to be one of the kids
- 9:01Shelly Bond: who actually got to sneak in through the stage door. Oh, it's like… it's one of those, here's an interesting story about me. That really happened. I was really fascinated by this story. It's a true story. Philip might not believe it, but we have a terrific little used record shop in our town called Atomic Records.
- 9:20Shelly Bond: And one day, I was in there, and there was this, like, massive box of free Clash
- 9:27Shelly Bond: CDs, tapes, paraphernalia. And I was…
- 9:32Shelly Bond: flipping out. I was just, like, over the moon, and there were two other people standing next to me, and we're all kind of digging in, but not, you know, crazy.
- 9:41Shelly Bond: being pleasant about it, and the owner of the shop said, this box was just donated by someone I met over the years from being, like, friends with a Clash-type fan club, and I'm like, wow, that's so cool. And he said, yeah, I'm one of the kids who can honestly say.
- 9:58Shelly Bond: that Joe Strummer really did open up the stage doors and let underage kids in to see their shows. He's like, I will never forget that. He's like, I was 17… or not 17, I was 14, and I…
- 10:11Shelly Bond: I just wanted to go to the show, I couldn't afford it, and a bunch of us were just hanging out by the stage door, and I was one of those kids, so it's a true story.
- 10:20Shelly Bond: I'm serious! You guys, there was so…
- 10:22Tad Eggleston: I believe it, I believe it. I'm mostly getting lost because I'm looking at the website for Atomic Records right now, and it looks like a beautiful, beautiful record store, and I want to go now.
- 10:33Shelly Bond: It's cool, and I've got…
- 10:35Tad Eggleston: Oh, no.
- 10:35Shelly Bond: pretty great bargains there. Philip is not sure if that's a true story, but I'm gonna take him over there tonight, and I'm gonna say…
- 10:43Tad Eggleston: It feels very… it feels very Joe Stromer.
- 10:46Tad Eggleston: It feels very Joe Stormer. He didn't like rules.
- 10:49Shelly Bond: Right. Yeah.
- 10:51Shelly Bond: Yeah.
- 10:52Shelly Bond: For the kids. Yeah, right? Yeah, for the kids.
- 10:56Tad Eggleston: Well, and he needed backup singers if they played career opportunities.
- 11:00Shelly Bond: Right? Oh my god, there were so many songs, like, where they would bring in the… Child choir.
- 11:08Shelly Bond: Anyway, Shelly…
- 11:10Shelly Bond: Yep. Tell us, what's your favorite question in your new book? Oh, God, a favorite question. That's my favorite question. You know, I'm tired of that old chestnut. How do you break into comics? And I know that will be the number one question of all time until the end of time.
- 11:29Shelly Bond: So, I guess.
- 11:30Tad Eggleston: That wasn't even the one I was thinking of.
- 11:32Shelly Bond: Really?
- 11:32Tad Eggleston: I was thinking, since you said it went from your time answering the phones at Kamiko all the way through.
- 11:39Tad Eggleston: Like, what number does… does… how do you pronounce Kamiko come in?
- 11:44Shelly Bond: Oh, well, you know, Tad, you know, as a backer of every book that we've put out on Kickstarter… Has that story's been in every book. No, that story's been in Fast Times, but I know that's Tad's favorite story of all time.
- 11:58Shelly Bond: That…
- 11:59Tad Eggleston: This is my favorite story of all time, but I'm…
- 12:02Shelly Bond: That's not what you said, what?
- 12:03Tad Eggleston: I'm very, very literal, so when you say frequently asked questions, I'm assuming that you, like, counted, and that's gotta be one of the most asked questions.
- 12:13Shelly Bond: There are a lot of questions that fell by the wayside.
- 12:17Tad Eggleston: Because, like, everybody who called asked that question.
- 12:19Shelly Bond: Right? No, fair enough, fair enough. I think everybody wants to know how to break into… Yeah, I mean, most people just call Kamiko Comico, and they don't care about it, because they've never heard of it.
- 12:29Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 12:30Shelly Bond: It's people like you, if you're over a certain age, and I'm not saying you're…
- 12:35Shelly Bond: anywhere close to our age range, Tad, but.
- 12:38Tad Eggleston: I have grandchildren.
- 12:39Shelly Bond: You're getting up there.
- 12:41Tad Eggleston: I have grandchildren, so, like, I don't… yeah.
- 12:44Shelly Bond: But most people don't care about comics history, and to be fair, neither did I back in the day, when I.
- 12:50Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 12:50Shelly Bond: their age. I must have mispronounced it Kamiko, though. Even, like, nobody ever… nobody ever said it to me. I just, like, picked it up in a comic book store, and it read Kamiko. You're a proper Englishman, come on, that's why.
- 13:05Tad Eggleston: That, that…
- 13:06Shelly Bond: student of grammar and syntax, come on.
- 13:09Tad Eggleston: See, the proper Englishman actually does lead to one of the questions that, since I don't remember having the two of you together, and I certainly haven't had the two of you where I wasn't wanting to share time with Will, like…
- 13:23Tad Eggleston: Phil, did you move to the United States for Shelly, or were you here before you guys got together?
- 13:30Shelly Bond: What kind of weird question is that?
- 13:32Tad Eggleston: That, that's a, that's a… you're a fantastic relationship.
- 13:35Shelly Bond: Gotcha.
- 13:35Tad Eggleston: how you fell in love with him because he drew your favorite issue of, I mean, that's how you always tell it.
- 13:43Shelly Bond: Right. Change of Man.
- 13:45Tad Eggleston: Okay, the changing man, so, so, like, so, so I, I want, I want to know the Phil and Shelley story.
- 13:51Shelly Bond: Oh, boy. No, we, we.
- 13:54Tad Eggleston: Because you haven't made it a comic yet.
- 13:55Shelly Bond: We started kind of dating, like, after a convention in the UK. It was in Manchester, wasn't it? Yeah. Is that the one in Manchester?
- 14:07Shelly Bond: That was, like, during the summer, I think, and we sort of just, like, hit it off, and we decided to, like, give it a try. So there was a… there were a few months of back and forth, but sort of…
- 14:19Shelly Bond: by the end of… by the end of that year, I'd… I'd moved over.
- 14:24Shelly Bond: Yeah, but the true story, which involves Bowie, and I feel like I must have told you this, Tad.
- 14:30Shelly Bond: No, it's true. I was supposed to go to Berlin.
- 14:33Shelly Bond: Dirt back trip. This is one detail of the true story. It's an interesting one, because I always wanted to go to Berlin. I was supposed to trace Bowie's footsteps when he made the Berlin trilogy, and I…
- 14:44Shelly Bond: I couldn't wait to go, and I was gonna be on my own, and for some reason, there was some unrest there, for whatever reason, and my dad called me at the hotel, which scared the hell out of me. He called me at my hotel.
- 14:56Shelly Bond: And he said, I have a really bad feeling about this, don't go. And if you know how I talk about my dad, like, you know, you don't…
- 15:04Shelly Bond: say no to my dad, and especially when he's kind of a little bit, like, worried about something. And it really pissed me off, and I wish she wouldn't have gotten ahold of me, because I would have just gone to Berlin, and we probably wouldn't be here, had that been the case. So we are going to say my dad brought us together, because I slammed the phone down.
- 15:23Shelly Bond: And when I slammed the phone down and said, okay, I won't go to Berlin, I thought, well, what else am I gonna do now? Because…
- 15:30Shelly Bond: I got, like, at least another 4 or 5 days.
- 15:33Shelly Bond: in Europe, and that's when I said, oh, I'm gonna go to London, who can I hang out with? And that's when I called this guy.
- 15:40Shelly Bond: not you, Tad, meaning the guy to my right, Phillip.
- 15:43Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I saw the thumb. Right? For those listening at home, she pointed a thumb at Philip, not at me.
- 15:49Shelly Bond: I wasn't trying to imply that Tad and I had an almost romance.
- 15:54Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Kelly would be upset if she heard that.
- 15:56Shelly Bond: Yeah, so would… so would Eddie. I mean, come on, let's be serious, and the good cats.
- 16:01Shelly Bond: But… and Phillip, my God, you'd have to hope that they're gonna keep the door open at Atomic Records tonight so he could sneak in and have some shelter.
- 16:11Shelly Bond: But I had the balls for some reason to call Philip and say, hey, I was supposed to be in Berlin, but now I'm gonna be in England for, like, the next 4 days with nothing to do. Wanna meet up?
- 16:23Shelly Bond: And we did. And I was in London, and we met halfway from Worthing to London, and we had a picnic.
- 16:30Shelly Bond: In an area that I swear looked exactly like a scene in The Invisibles.
- 16:36Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 16:36Shelly Bond: Yeah, yeah. Which is why we're also convinced that Grant is responsible for our happy marriage in some way.
- 16:45Tad Eggleston: Well, I've heard he's a wizard.
- 16:47Shelly Bond: I think we actually went to a tea shop. It could have been, like, a scene out of, Kill Your Boyfriend.
- 16:54Tad Eggleston: It was a bit of both, and I…
- 16:57Shelly Bond: I'm not surprised. I'm not surprised because…
- 17:00Shelly Bond: Grant often told me things when I worked with him as editor to writer on The Invisibles, he often told me things that he was predicting based on the white magic that he was practicing, and some of those things involved me, so there you go. Here it is.
- 17:17Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 17:18Shelly Bond: 25 and a half.
- 17:19Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 17:19Shelly Bond: later, right?
- 17:22Shelly Bond: Those stories.
- 17:23Tad Eggleston: 25 and a half good years, because you still… you guys still laugh with each other.
- 17:28Tad Eggleston: I, and I, I, I…
- 17:29Shelly Bond: Mostly.
- 17:30Tad Eggleston: Well, that too, but I mean, that's…
- 17:32Shelly Bond: We still create with each other, that's the… that's the.
- 17:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 17:36Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, every once in a while, people create with each other when they hate each other. I mean, I was just listening to a thing on Fleetwood Max.
- 17:44Shelly Bond: Rumors album. Yeah, it's not that kind of situation. Right.
- 17:51Tad Eggleston: Actually, it was Cameron Crowe's book, because Cameron Crowe was in the room for part of that.
- 17:57Tad Eggleston: Did you get… get a chance to look at his Bowie chapters? They're phenomenal.
- 18:02Shelly Bond: Listen, you've recommended it to me, what, like, 6 days ago?
- 18:06Tad Eggleston: It might have been 8.
- 18:07Shelly Bond: books to make. Some of us have 100 questions.
- 18:10Tad Eggleston: We know down.
- 18:11Shelly Bond: from 101.
- 18:13Tad Eggleston: That's what… that's what audiobooks are for.
- 18:18Shelly Bond: Oh, so you read… listen to someone else's book while you're writing your own, yeah.
- 18:23Tad Eggleston: Well, I guess that doesn't work as well.
- 18:25Shelly Bond: Oh, God, I…
- 18:26Tad Eggleston: Well, actually, that's a good question. Do you have your…
- 18:29Shelly Bond: What's that next? Yeah. My god.
- 18:34Tad Eggleston: how did you… how did you whittle down the hundred questions? Did… did you… did you have… I mean, because I… I…
- 18:41Tad Eggleston: Again, I'm autistic. I make lists. And some days, I, like, go, oh, I'm gonna put together a list of 100, and I start with 300, and I have to whittle it down. And other days, I decide it's gonna be 100, and I get to, like, 70, and I gotta start, like.
- 18:57Tad Eggleston: really working to get that next 30. So, so how did it work here?
- 19:01Shelly Bond: Yeah, well, firstly, it hasn't yet. Well, that's not true. We have… because we have about 350. The truth of the matter is, for me.
- 19:09Shelly Bond: when I… when I think about projects like this.
- 19:13Shelly Bond: as soon as I break them down into chapters, it makes it easier, because you can actually… you can have a rhythm and a flow to the whole book, so…
- 19:22Shelly Bond: I talked to Philip about the idea I had of actually just taking the obvious linear steps to making comics.
- 19:31Shelly Bond: and break down everything into 5 chapters with approximately 20 questions each. Because some of them, one might have a few more, one might have a few less, but… Are you gonna mess with me like that? I'm gonna mess with you like that, but I'm gonna tell you, it's gonna be worth it. So you have…
- 19:48Shelly Bond: First chapter about idea and story. Second chapter is about art. Third chapter is about ballooning, lettering, and coloring, because those are areas that are usually short-changed.
- 20:02Shelly Bond: in any conversation or in any book about making comics, they never seem to get as much of a deep dive.
- 20:09Shelly Bond: After that, we've got proofreading, production, and printing, and then the big number 5, the one that I think most people need to know about industry in air quotes, because I think comics are a hobby now, but that's another conversation, Todd. Industry and professionalism.
- 20:28Shelly Bond: these are the things that are gonna make or break you in terms of kind of fitting into the business, or maybe actually finding a community to work with, because you know how it goes. You can be the greatest artist, you can be the smartest kid in the room, but if you're a jerk.
- 20:46Shelly Bond: Don't… don't even look at me again. Go away. I don't have time for you.
- 20:50Tad Eggleston: There's not enough money in comics to be a jerk.
- 20:53Shelly Bond: Right?
- 20:53Tad Eggleston: I mean… I mean, obviously, we have a handful of, of, of…
- 21:00Tad Eggleston: counterexamples to this, but I know I've said it to you before, that, like.
- 21:05Tad Eggleston: If you're working collaboratively, there's not enough money to go around for anybody willing to work with you if you're a jerk. And if you're working solo, you have to hand-sell things, so if you're a jerk, people won't buy from you.
- 21:17Shelly Bond: Right? Why should they? No one has any money right now.
- 21:23Tad Eggleston: Everybody is depressed and angry with the state.
- 21:27Shelly Bond: of the world.
- 21:28Shelly Bond: You know, the best thing we can do is put our rage and our anger and our disappointment
- 21:35Shelly Bond: our global…
- 21:36Tad Eggleston: Appointment.
- 21:37Shelly Bond: Into comics.
- 21:39Shelly Bond: And either make comics that are cathartic, that we can just get everything off our chest, or do the opposite. Make comics that are so fantastic and fun that you're escaping into the pages, because that's what I live to do.
- 21:55Tad Eggleston: So…
- 21:56Shelly Bond: Someone's looking at me like, what? I tried Cliff Baked Chocolate cake.
- 22:01Tad Eggleston: So, so how do you plan to…
- 22:05Tad Eggleston: Structure the book, because anytime you do something
- 22:09Tad Eggleston: nonfiction, and particularly something like this, where you're starting from questions, like, you…
- 22:16Tad Eggleston: The tendency is often to go, like, the Scott McCloud understanding comics, talking head type.
- 22:23Shelly Bond: Nope.
- 22:24Tad Eggleston: Bing.
- 22:25Shelly Bond: But…
- 22:26Tad Eggleston: there… there are a million other interesting ways, so do you have a specific way that you're planning to structure it, or is it going to change question to question?
- 22:36Shelly Bond: No, because we're thinking about you, and we know how you like to have a pattern. And also, it's why I've brought in this guy to my right, because…
- 22:45Shelly Bond: You marry your favorite artist, you don't want anyone else
- 22:49Shelly Bond: to do the illustrations to accompany the hopefully clever banter and useful information. So, having Philip
- 23:00Shelly Bond: Either draw something that runs counter to my answers, or that's a nice visual accompaniment.
- 23:07Shelly Bond: to what I'm espousing.
- 23:10Shelly Bond: to the world at large, that's the trick up my sleeve that I've had in making this book really cool.
- 23:17Shelly Bond: It's…
- 23:17Tad Eggleston: See, I just heard that you were gonna have a conversation with me, so I'm waiting to see how Philip draws me.
- 23:22Shelly Bond: No, that's not gonna… I'm sorry. Maybe one day, maybe not… not in the next year. We've got a couple of issues of Geezer to get to, too, after this as well. But I think the thing about this kind of book, Tad, it's…
- 23:35Shelly Bond: It's gonna have the Q&A and spot illustrations, and there will be a few comics, but they will be short comics, like strips.
- 23:43Tad Eggleston: Okay.
- 23:44Shelly Bond: four panels.
- 23:44Tad Eggleston: So it's gonna be… it's gonna be more spot illustration than… than…
- 23:48Shelly Bond: Yeah, it's got demonstrations and… and some interesting diagrams. I'm looking forward.
- 23:53Tad Eggleston: I love diagrams.
- 23:55Shelly Bond: Well, actually, our stretch goal right now, Tad, in case you didn't have time to check out the website before the conversation, Philip, just introducing a new stretch goal to the Kickstarter for the 20,000, which we didn't think we'd be getting anywhere near. But,
- 24:15Shelly Bond: So we're gonna add in a, a fold-out… it's kind of a fold-out poster, but it's a magazine in itself. It's a zine fold-out poster.
- 24:27Shelly Bond: That's all… all full of, informative little things.
- 24:31Shelly Bond: It's gonna be a handy little guide to have around for anyone who makes comics. Yeah, it's kind of like your cheat sheet, you know, your cliff notes. As you make a comic, there are always a bunch of things that…
- 24:45Shelly Bond: You should always remember to do that. Sometimes get… get…
- 24:49Shelly Bond: you know, lost in the process. I mean, sometimes it's the simplest thing, like, you make your comic on the computer, and you're doing it in RGB, and you have to convert to
- 24:58Shelly Bond: CMYK. Now, maybe that's not a big deal for you, and maybe your printer converts it for you anyway, but it's kind of really good basic information you need to know, because CMYK is print.
- 25:10Shelly Bond: Yeah, whether a lot of people use this information or not, or sort of… or digress from it, I think it's, like, good for people to know
- 25:18Shelly Bond: Sort of the standards that,
- 25:21Shelly Bond: That, that are expected before you can really,
- 25:25Shelly Bond: you know, move away from the standards. Well, right, and… Sort of understand…
- 25:30Tad Eggleston: What effect that's gonna have.
- 25:32Shelly Bond: Right? It's a professional quality. You know, sometimes I think… I'm always a big fan of, like, telling kids and students and teenagers, you know, throw yourself in, make a mini-comic. I mean, the day that I learned how to fold a mini-comic, I felt like my life began, because I didn't realize
- 25:50Shelly Bond: That you could do that with a piece of paper, and all you needed was a pencil, a pen, or some blood, and you could just make your own art. Seriously, like, it's not even that.
- 26:01Tad Eggleston: No, I love it.
- 26:02Shelly Bond: Like, you just need some… or soda. You could spill soda on it, and it's art. Now.
- 26:07Shelly Bond: That is good for you and your mom, and your husband or your boyfriend, your best friend. If you want to produce
- 26:15Shelly Bond: Professional-level comics, and you want one of the big two.
- 26:19Shelly Bond: to actually tap you on the shoulder and say, can we publish that? Or you want Drawn and Quarterly to offer you a contract for a graphic novel. You should know that there are certain standards that they're going to be expecting. You know, another one that might sound really simple and ridiculous, but
- 26:36Shelly Bond: Your page count should be divisible by 4, and there's a.
- 26:39Tad Eggleston: Forwardly.
- 26:40Shelly Bond: good reason.
- 26:41Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 26:42Shelly Bond: Because of signatures.
- 26:44Shelly Bond: I mean… the fact that you know that, Tad, makes you…
- 26:49Shelly Bond: so appreciated, even though you couldn't get Joe Strummer to guest star on this podcast today on International Clash Day.
- 26:56Shelly Bond: But the reason for that…
- 26:57Tad Eggleston: Well, you know, when I was googling how to do seances, they tried to convince me, and this is how I know that there's something messed up with the algorithm, because I didn't say, seance of Joe Strummer, I just googled how to do seances, and I had a thing pop up saying, would you like an AI version of Joe Strummer? And I said.
- 27:15Tad Eggleston: No, no, I shut down the window.
- 27:18Shelly Bond: Right?
- 27:19Tad Eggleston: I…
- 27:20Shelly Bond: Yeah.
- 27:21Tad Eggleston: So, I mean, we gotta be careful right now, Shelly. You're right. You're right. I'm sorry. I'll be a bit more specific next time.
- 27:33Tad Eggleston: But yeah, no, I, I love… and I'm gonna quickly say that as of right now, and hopefully they'll be over by the time anybody's listening, but at this moment, you are $1,522 away from us getting that fold-out comic.
- 27:50Shelly Bond: Wow, what.
- 27:50Tad Eggleston: P.
- 27:51Shelly Bond: Wait, what's behind you, Tad? That looks like it's a good stereo system behind you. Can we sell your stereo system?
- 28:00Tad Eggleston: Oh, that's my bookcase.
- 28:01Shelly Bond: Oh, okay. All right, that's.
- 28:03Tad Eggleston: And a Loving Rockets poster.
- 28:05Shelly Bond: Which Lovin' Rockets poster is that? That might be worth a lot.
- 28:09Tad Eggleston: The one they put out for the,
- 28:12Tad Eggleston: 48th anniversary that has all the characters?
- 28:14Shelly Bond: Alright. Alright, that might go for 1K. Let me make some phone calls. So it's a recent one.
- 28:21Shelly Bond: I'm gonna put that on eBay while we're talking, Tad, and…
- 28:23Tad Eggleston: I bet you we can get the 1K without having to sell any of my stuff.
- 28:27Shelly Bond: Yeah, I think so, yeah.
- 28:29Tad Eggleston: I don't have enough cool stuff.
- 28:31Shelly Bond: That, I… can't believe. No worries.
- 28:34Tad Eggleston: I have a lot of cool stuff, but it tends not to be the expensive cool stuff, and don't you care come near my original David Lapham.
- 28:44Shelly Bond: What?
- 28:45Tad Eggleston: I showed this to you a long time ago. I've got a page from…
- 28:49Shelly Bond: I know how excited you get when we talk about the spray bullets killers. Let's see, let's see it.
- 28:53Tad Eggleston: No, it's downstairs.
- 28:54Shelly Bond: listeners.
- 28:54Tad Eggleston: He's not in this room.
- 28:55Shelly Bond: Well, Philip is walking behind him because our cat… Toby knocked over.
- 29:02Shelly Bond: a David Lapham original that he gifted me when we worked on.
- 29:06Tad Eggleston: Oh, wow.
- 29:08Shelly Bond: This is, Danny Duotone.
- 29:12Tad Eggleston: Nice.
- 29:13Shelly Bond: from… he was the DJ, he was the alter ego of the character Danny Noonan from Young Liars.
- 29:20Tad Eggleston: Young Liars is such a good book. I actually… have I told you? I…
- 29:24Shelly Bond: After I read…
- 29:26Tad Eggleston: after I read Young Liars, not only did I love it, I went, my son's gonna love this. And I don't… was it all Lapham doing the soundtrack? Or at this point, I wonder, how much did you help him with the soundtrack for that book?
- 29:39Shelly Bond: Oh, let's just say when David and I started working on Young Liars, he… Bruin the song, Let's Dance.
- 29:49Shelly Bond: And that's when I really started to question his sanity, and I had said to him, so I thought he had told me years before that, when we worked on Silverfish, he was a big Bowie fan.
- 29:58Shelly Bond: And I don't know what that meant to him.
- 30:02Shelly Bond: But what it meant to me was not picking Let's Dance as the first song on the soundtrack.
- 30:07Shelly Bond: Just sayin'.
- 30:09Tad Eggleston: That, that makes sense.
- 30:10Shelly Bond: It was a combination. It was a combination. David and I both contributed songs.
- 30:15Tad Eggleston: So, so, so when…
- 30:17Shelly Bond: The set that was a part of the opening, you know.
- 30:20Tad Eggleston: When…
- 30:21Shelly Bond: Is anything…
- 30:21Tad Eggleston: I tracked down and got all of the single issues, and I put together a mixed CD that my wife did art for.
- 30:32Tad Eggleston: Wow. And that was my… that was my, son's Christmas present one year.
- 30:37Shelly Bond: was all 18 issues and the CD to go along with it. And tell me, did your son like it, or was he just like.
- 30:43Tad Eggleston: He did.
- 30:43Shelly Bond: I would rather… I would rather have a recipe book so I can make…
- 30:51Tad Eggleston: My son was…
- 30:55Tad Eggleston: over it. And… and for that matter, he, he, like, you have also worked with… with both his favorite comic writer and one of his top five musicians. Bowie, by the way, being probably his one or two musician, too.
- 31:12Shelly Bond: Oh, what a cool kid! Our son, like, sticks his nose up at comics.
- 31:17Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 31:18Shelly Bond: I mean, maybe not, but he just ignores us, and ignores the comics we.
- 31:22Tad Eggleston: No, no, no. That's no injuries.
- 31:24Shelly Bond: interest. I mean, doesn't… I mean, knows that it could be cool, but doesn't care.
- 31:30Tad Eggleston: My son, somehow, was a fabulous Killjoys fan.
- 31:36Tad Eggleston: before he was a My Chemical Romance fan.
- 31:39Shelly Bond: Wow. He's cool. You did. Yeah. Congratulations, you guys did well.
- 31:46Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, I worked in music stores before he was born, and I've always moonlighted in comic stores, and I learned a long time ago that the way to get kids into things is not to try.
- 31:58Shelly Bond: I just had it around. Yeah.
- 32:01Shelly Bond: Yeah. We tried too hard. I mean, our son knew… our son was listen… he was 4 years old, and he was singing the Clash's cover song of Bank Robber, and he knew the difference between a Clash and a… between a Mick Jones and a Joe Strummer song at that age.
- 32:20Shelly Bond: Right. And then that was it.
- 32:23Shelly Bond: I mean, seriously, he was… he never got… was a big Clash fan, he…
- 32:28Shelly Bond: What do you… I don't know what you're complaining about. I'm not really complaining.
- 32:31Tad Eggleston: My kids were singing Tom Petty in the back of the car when… actually, I remember it was the year the last DJ came out, and my daughter was, I think.
- 32:43Tad Eggleston: 5, and my son was one and a… er, my daughter was four, and my son was one and a half, and…
- 32:50Tad Eggleston: She would sing, like, all the words, and all he could do was, DJ! DJ! DJ!
- 32:55Shelly Bond: Aww.
- 32:57Shelly Bond: That's adorable.
- 32:59Shelly Bond: Yeah.
- 33:00Tad Eggleston: so, yeah, no, no, my kids have good taste.
- 33:04Shelly Bond: Well, I don't know how I pulled it off.
- 33:07Tad Eggleston: But it's, like, one of the few things I'm truly proud of.
- 33:11Shelly Bond: Is that the kids have good taste.
- 33:14Tad Eggleston: Well, my…
- 33:14Shelly Bond: Oh, awesome!
- 33:15Tad Eggleston: They're not my wife's kids. I got married long after my kid… my son was actually my best man.
- 33:23Shelly Bond: Huh.
- 33:25Shelly Bond: What?
- 33:26Shelly Bond: Well, how old.
- 33:26Tad Eggleston: But she's had something to do with his music taste since then.
- 33:30Shelly Bond: I can imagine. It sounds like.
- 33:32Tad Eggleston: Yeah. Because she's awesome.
- 33:34Tad Eggleston: I'm not trying to… not trying to downgrade my wife, but on the off chance that she listens or he listens, you know, they'd immediately correct me.
- 33:41Shelly Bond: You're kicking your head in the door right now, and you might be in big trouble!
- 33:45Tad Eggleston: I mean, that's always possible. I'm surprised the cat hasn't come in yet, because I left the door open, and he likes to come try to eat the microphone while I'm talking.
- 33:53Shelly Bond: We've got about 20 minutes to cover one… We do. …one frequently asked questions when making comments.
- 33:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, is it up to 101 now?
- 34:01Shelly Bond: Well, it is when we're talking to you, we need the public.
- 34:03Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 34:04Tad Eggleston: 20 minutes.
- 34:10Tad Eggleston: 20?
- 34:11Shelly Bond: Well, I just… oh, my wife just texted that she can hear me. -Oh.
- 34:16Shelly Bond: Now, Tad's in trouble. This might be our last interview of all time.
- 34:21Tad Eggleston: No!
- 34:22Shelly Bond: 22 panels is gonna be slowly dropping down to 21 panels, 20, 19.
- 34:29Tad Eggleston: No, no, no. Though I do actually… I do remember one question that I wanted to ask. Tess Fowler finished your book, have you gotten to see it yet?
- 34:38Shelly Bond: No, haven't.
- 34:39Tad Eggleston: Oh, she's… she's sent in advance to me. It is outstanding, you are going to love it.
- 34:46Shelly Bond: Oh, congratulations!
- 34:47Shelly Bond: the test.
- 34:48Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 34:48Shelly Bond: that she's been working on that for a long time.
- 34:51Tad Eggleston: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 34:54Tad Eggleston: Well, let's… because this can sometimes go the whole 20 minutes, and I don't want to keep you guys late tonight, as much as I would happily keep you forever,
- 35:08Tad Eggleston: So let's… let's… oh, that's right! Since the last time I talked to you, I've added to my required ending questions, so we will fill up the last 20 minutes, particularly, because with the two of you, this one's gonna get a good one.
- 35:22Tad Eggleston: In the 5 years since I started doing this podcast, I feel like I've entered the Twilight Zone. My life has become a series of surreal experiences with people that used to be names on
- 35:35Tad Eggleston: on paper, that I never thought that I'd…
- 35:40Tad Eggleston: Meet, spend time with, much less, like, text during baseball games, or go to dinner with, or whatever.
- 35:48Shelly Bond: You're not gonna text me during baseball. You're not gonna interrupt my baseball game. Oh my god. Sports. You know how I feel about sports.
- 35:57Tad Eggleston: Yeah, see, I feel the way you feel about sports for every sport except baseball.
- 36:01Shelly Bond: I know, we always talk about that! I like ice skating and roller skating and baton twirling and tap dancing, those are my sports.
- 36:10Shelly Bond: Okay.
- 36:10Tad Eggleston: I like tap dancing. I don't know about the other ones.
- 36:13Shelly Bond: I do. Is ice dancing a real sport? Ice… I didn't say ice dancing. Oh, ice. I said ice skating. Oh, it's the same thing.
- 36:20Tad Eggleston: Ice skating. So are you gonna be watching the figure skating in the Olympics this weekend?
- 36:24Shelly Bond: on the Olympics, yeah. I was like, I don't understand that. Are we promoting the Olympics on this podcast?
- 36:32Tad Eggleston: I wasn't really, but my student was talking about them all day today, so I've heard a lot about how the opening ceremonies are tonight.
- 36:42Shelly Bond: Yeah, we'll let you.
- 36:43Tad Eggleston: Obviously, I'm not watching them right now, I'm talking to you.
- 36:47Shelly Bond: That's true. You're in the future. We're still a few hours behind you as we're speaking.
- 36:53Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 36:54Shelly Bond: Tell us, tell us the.
- 36:55Tad Eggleston: So the question is… what I've loved is it turns out that, like, I'm not alone. Everybody in comics, no matter how big or small they are, has…
- 37:05Tad Eggleston: Similar surreal experiences, so… Would you share one? Each of you?
- 37:11Tad Eggleston: Tell me something that you just sit there going, oh my god, I did that, let me pinch myself, because that doesn't feel right.
- 37:19Shelly Bond: Villa?
- 37:20Shelly Bond: He's thinking.
- 37:24Shelly Bond: I've never been, sort of, like, one to, sort of, like, have… like… big names that, I.
- 37:34Tad Eggleston: It doesn't have to be big names, I mean, just, just things…
- 37:38Tad Eggleston: things that you, like… I mean, for some people, it's the feeling of, like, having fans come up to them for the first time and care about what they do.
- 37:48Shelly Bond: Well, yeah, yeah.
- 37:50Tad Eggleston: The job itself is… is…
- 37:53Tad Eggleston: I mean, possibly even more than the sports star or the pop star, like, to be able to survive in life by making comic books is, like.
- 38:02Shelly Bond: Barely. That. Yeah.
- 38:04Tad Eggleston: Well, that's my point.
- 38:06Shelly Bond: That's right.
- 38:07Tad Eggleston: It's like the impossible dream.
- 38:09Shelly Bond: Yeah, it is.
- 38:09Tad Eggleston: If you pull it off, it becomes…
- 38:12Shelly Bond: Yeah. Yeah, I, like, you know, it's gonna be, like, sort of, like, probably 40 years soon that I've been somehow scraping by, whether it's, like, through… like, the whole thing's been through the, sort of, kindness of friends and…
- 38:32Shelly Bond: And… and some strangers.
- 38:34Shelly Bond: You know, I couldn't have done this on my own.
- 38:40Tad Eggleston: I'm like, yes, ahum-hum, yes.
- 38:45Shelly Bond: You know, and willing partners, you know, like, it's often said, sort of behind every…
- 38:52Shelly Bond: successful comic book artist. There's a wife with a decent job and healthcare, but that's… that's certainly helpful.
- 39:02Tad Eggleston: I can name so many comic book artists that that's true for!
- 39:06Shelly Bond: Yeah. Well, it's very true.
- 39:08Tad Eggleston: You're the wife that just handles all the business side? Yeah. I mean, shouts out to Vijaya for Jeff Smith, and Robin for Terry Moore, and…
- 39:19Shelly Bond: Yep.
- 39:20Shelly Bond: Yep.
- 39:21Shelly Bond: So, yeah, I… it's… it's all… all been through the,
- 39:26Shelly Bond: The kindness of strangers. Well, I think also.
- 39:30Shelly Bond: you are a humble person, you know? You could have let
- 39:36Shelly Bond: your talent and success go to your head, and have… you could have just walked off and become a rock star in your own right. I think I came into it not expecting anything.
- 39:47Shelly Bond: for one thing, I didn't… I didn't come into it looking for, sort of.
- 39:52Shelly Bond: Money, certainly not money. Never really, sort of, thought about that.
- 39:57Shelly Bond: Hot girls. I'm afraid. Hot girls like the ones that you were drawing. Hot girls, yeah, we… yeah. That worked for a little while. It was, yes, I mean, it's like the reasons, you know, the reasons people form bands. It's like to hang out with friends, to… to make art, and to attract girls.
- 40:14Shelly Bond: Or, you know, whatever your preference may be. But, you know, it's the exact same thing.
- 40:20Shelly Bond: It's like…
- 40:21Shelly Bond: You know, you… you gotta do something if you're… you gotta make art. Like, some people have got to make art.
- 40:27Tad Eggleston: Here he is.
- 40:28Shelly Bond: Oh! It's Eddie to the rescue! Speaking of art…
- 40:34Shelly Bond: Oh my goodness. Oh, he's turned off the video. This is an audio podcast, because otherwise there would be no video anyway.
- 40:46Tad Eggleston: Hi, Eddie.
- 40:47Shelly Bond: it looks like.
- 40:47Tad Eggleston: How are you?
- 40:48Shelly Bond: Tuxedo.
- 40:49Shelly Bond: Is he a sexy?
- 40:50Tad Eggleston: He is… He is one part tuxedo and one part tabby, because he's actually striped in here.
- 40:58Shelly Bond: Yeah.
- 40:59Tad Eggleston: But… but he's got the white belly.
- 41:01Shelly Bond: Looks like a big, cuddly baby to me.
- 41:04Tad Eggleston: Yep.
- 41:05Tad Eggleston: Well, he's also my granddaughter's best friend, which is probably the only reason we haven't, like…
- 41:11Shelly Bond: Aww.
- 41:12Tad Eggleston: Left him outside.
- 41:14Shelly Bond: That's mean!
- 41:15Shelly Bond: Tad, I thought.
- 41:16Tad Eggleston: I only say that when he's around. I say it to his face.
- 41:20Shelly Bond: Yeah, exactly. I see that. I think you might get a paw up your nose in a second. Be careful.
- 41:26Tad Eggleston: That does happen sometimes.
- 41:29Shelly Bond: Tad, tell us.
- 41:29Tad Eggleston: And he was actually saying, wait a minute, wait a minute, there's a way to be left outside? You always chase me when I run outside.
- 41:38Shelly Bond: Yeah, we have indoor cats. We know that they cannot wait to get the hell out of here. Although, what kind of better life could it be for our kittens than a small publishing company that's overrun and overcome by boxes? Every time.
- 41:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 41:55Shelly Bond: If we lose these kittens, they're somewhere in a box.
- 41:59Tad Eggleston: Oh, he loves it when I get comics, because it means he gets a box.
- 42:03Shelly Bond: Yeah. Yep, every time a new box gets opened.
- 42:07Shelly Bond: Yeah, there's, like, glitter falls from the ceiling, and we have a little cheer party, and then the music somehow kicks in, and it's, like, 30 seconds of, like.
- 42:18Shelly Bond: Cheering and joy. And then suddenly we look around, and there they are, hiding from us.
- 42:23Shelly Bond: In the boxes. Because we have, like, sort of, like, 50 boxes of, iDoppelganger in the garage. That many. They're not allowed in there. Sold more than that.
- 42:36Shelly Bond: No, we've got.
- 42:38Tad Eggleston: I mean, you're just coming up on con season, so you'll get rid of more.
- 42:42Shelly Bond: Get rid of them. I don't know, they spent…
- 42:44Tad Eggleston: I meant sell.
- 42:46Shelly Bond: 5 years to make that book. My goodness.
- 42:49Tad Eggleston: It meant sell.
- 42:51Shelly Bond: Right, okay. I do.
- 42:53Tad Eggleston: I didn't… I didn't mean give away.
- 42:56Shelly Bond: Right.
- 42:57Shelly Bond: at Casa Bond, Coming soon.
- 43:02Tad Eggleston: Alright, Shelly, how about a surreal experience?
- 43:06Shelly Bond: Well, Todd, I've been on your show so many times, I think I've told all the same stories twice.
- 43:11Tad Eggleston: Well, that's possible, but only my mom listens to all of the episodes.
- 43:15Shelly Bond: Oh, alright.
- 43:17Tad Eggleston: I mean, this is the seventh…
- 43:19Shelly Bond: Yeah, I'm, like, really worried.
- 43:21Tad Eggleston: fun and, like.
- 43:21Shelly Bond: What… which surreal experience is gonna… is she gonna pull out of…
- 43:26Shelly Bond: The, the filing cabinet that is her brain. Yeah, I don't… I don't… I'm not sure which one I want to share.
- 43:34Shelly Bond: I feel like, Tad, when we spoke not long ago, I feel like I might have told the story about Paul Weller?
- 43:43Shelly Bond: Or about… I think so. The one about Morrissey.
- 43:49Tad Eggleston: You did tell… you did tell the one about meeting with Bowie's people.
- 43:54Shelly Bond: Right, okay.
- 43:56Shelly Bond: Alright, so… I'm not sure what to say. I mean, as far as comics, I feel like…
- 44:06Shelly Bond: Working in the industry for so long.
- 44:09Shelly Bond: You know, I knew I came in as just, like,
- 44:17Shelly Bond: Knowing that I had to prove myself.
- 44:20Shelly Bond: In an industry I knew nothing about. I was a kid, right out of college.
- 44:24Shelly Bond: And… I didn't have stars in my eyes, because I wasn't a comics fan, so I think that helped.
- 44:31Tad Eggleston: Right.
- 44:31Shelly Bond: early days, right? I saw people around me at DC Comics who were such super fan boys and girls, as they were called back then, that they literally started to sweat if
- 44:43Shelly Bond: some famous person came into the office for a visit. They would get, like, really nervous, and not be able to really speak well.
- 44:52Shelly Bond: And that's not good in… when you're working.
- 44:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah, Klaus Jansen's the only one who managed to do that to me. Who? And I made up for it the next time I met him.
- 45:00Shelly Bond: Who?
- 45:01Tad Eggleston: Klaus Jansen.
- 45:02Shelly Bond: Oh, Klaus Jansen, good guy, Klaus. I thought you were gonna say David Lapham.
- 45:08Tad Eggleston: No, I did pretty well with David Lapham, I thought.
- 45:12Shelly Bond: Yeah!
- 45:12Tad Eggleston: You saw me meet David Lapham.
- 45:14Shelly Bond: I know, I know.
- 45:16Shelly Bond: It was exciting! It was exciting.
- 45:18Tad Eggleston: Klaus Chance and I had trouble finding the right words, and my wife had to do some of my talking for me. And then I had to have Mark Chiarello reintroduce us a couple of years later.
- 45:29Shelly Bond: Oh, nice. And Klaus is very humble, too, so I'm sure he just thought that was charming.
- 45:35Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 45:36Shelly Bond: I'll have to… I'll have to ask him the next time I see him, which I don't see him often, so don't worry about it.
- 45:40Tad Eggleston: Yeah, he's a C2E2 again this year, so…
- 45:42Shelly Bond: Oh.
- 45:42Tad Eggleston: And I will get to see him again this year.
- 45:44Shelly Bond: Oh, you will?
- 45:45Shelly Bond: Yeah. Very nice!
- 45:47Tad Eggleston: I actually have 4 panels this year.
- 45:49Shelly Bond: Whoa!
- 45:49Tad Eggleston: I'm moving up in the world, I'm moderating panels this year.
- 45:52Shelly Bond: That's exciting!
- 45:54Tad Eggleston: Oh my god.
- 45:54Shelly Bond: Look out, Chicago, right?
- 45:58Shelly Bond: Back in Chicago for C2E2?
- 46:00Tad Eggleston: Well, I mean, that's… I live in the area, so…
- 46:03Shelly Bond: No, that's what I… I wasn't sure if it… if it moved locations.
- 46:06Tad Eggleston: No, C2E2's… it's the Chicago… Comics and Entertainment Expo.
- 46:13Shelly Bond: Yeah, that would make sense. I kind of thought it was the culture.
- 46:16Shelly Bond: to Culture Expo, but I'm just making that up now, because Philip's looking at me like, how could you not know that was in Chicago? No, I don't know at all. I just, I'm just trying to… I thought it was, how did that go?
- 46:28Shelly Bond: I… I'm… I was.
- 46:29Tad Eggleston: Actually, Simon Bisley's gonna be here this year, too, and your guy, Martin Simons.
- 46:34Shelly Bond: The biz! Well, you'll have to, like, nudge, nudge, wink, wink…
- 46:39Shelly Bond: to the biz. While we're talking, I know that people won't be able to see this, but you're mentioning the biz, and I've got to pull down something from.
- 46:47Tad Eggleston: Well, I'm just trying to convince you guys to come out to Chicago that weekend.
- 46:52Tad Eggleston: If everybody you know is here, that's a good opportunity to go on vacation.
- 46:58Shelly Bond: We probably owe them things. We don't need to see people who might want comics and original art from Phillip or something like that.
- 47:09Tad Eggleston: Oh, okay.
- 47:10Shelly Bond: Does this ring a bell? Oh, wow. You're looking at it, and I want you to… you're the one that has these listeners, so do you know what this is?
- 47:18Tad Eggleston: Well, it's definitely a Bisley Hellblazer cover, and… I don't… I love The Clash?
- 47:26Shelly Bond: There is a slight reference.
- 47:28Shelly Bond: Anyone who thinks that I'm just a casual Clash fan, au contraire, Bisley and I had so much fun on
- 47:37Shelly Bond: That cover run.
- 47:39Shelly Bond: It was the final 5 years
- 47:44Shelly Bond: of the original Hellblazer. It was Peter Milligan writing, and it is…
- 47:49Shelly Bond: I hadn't worked with him, I'd met him to say hello, not, you know, didn't really have any kind of…
- 47:55Shelly Bond: friendship with him at all, and I was super stoked to work with him, because I wanted to kick his ass. You know, I thought he was great, but I also knew that, like, you know, like any artist.
- 48:06Shelly Bond: If you're not invested in a monthly book, and you're not excited about the rhythm that you need to be in for monthly, then, you know, you should just be fired. So, I think
- 48:17Shelly Bond: I thought he was super talented, and I just wanted to, like, sink my fangs into him and say, dude, let's step it up, let's make this rock and roll.
- 48:25Shelly Bond: Because I think sometimes people have a tendency to make John Constantine look like an old, ugly.
- 48:32Shelly Bond: withered, raisin-like man. And I wasn't gonna have that for the Constantine that had my name in the book.
- 48:40Shelly Bond: So, we had a great chat, and we had some similar musical interests, and he was a fan of The Clash and strummer.
- 48:50Shelly Bond: And so, we talked a lot about how John should really have more of that edge again. And in fact, it was Biz who actually gave John, a scar down his eye that went from his middle of his forehead to his eye, because he wanted to roughen him up.
- 49:07Shelly Bond: And it just looked so good, and Peter Milligan and I were just like, whoa, you know, this is… this is the John that we've always wanted, you know, the badass John to come back. I mean, we were talking about issues…
- 49:20Shelly Bond: 352 to… I'm sorry, 252 to 300, so he'd been around the block. He was aging in real time, but that didn't mean he had to be, like, a super wuss and a lame, you know.
- 49:34Shelly Bond: repetitive constant time.
- 49:37Shelly Bond: So that cover, in particular.
- 49:39Shelly Bond: was basically John as Joe Strummer. You know, he was wearing a Clash t-shirt with that great logo, he was wearing, like, a leopard jacket, like, faux fur leopard jacket, and he had the Strummer mohawk from Combat Rock. And that only happens when your editor says.
- 49:58Shelly Bond: Let's step it up, people! Let's not just do the same old shot of John. Step it up with the Clash references. Well, but think about it. When you have a series that goes on for, like, you know, almost 300 issues.
- 50:13Shelly Bond: You're gonna get repetition. You're gonna have people come in and, you know, sometimes the same artist paints the same angle of the character over and over again, and, like, you know, let's do better.
- 50:23Shelly Bond: Let's elevate the art form, let's not do the same old thing.
- 50:27Shelly Bond: So, those were good times. So, tell Biz, I said, hey.
- 50:32Tad Eggleston: I will. I will.
- 50:34Tad Eggleston: Alright, standard closing question. Tell me something you love, preferably a comic, but we don't have rules.
- 50:41Shelly Bond: Preferably storytelling, but again, with the rules, but something you love.
- 50:45Tad Eggleston: And not enough people around you?
- 50:48Tad Eggleston: Have experienced it, and you need them to, so you have more people to talk about it with.
- 50:53Shelly Bond: Well… I'm…
- 50:56Shelly Bond: Can I… can I go with the book that we, let me, shelley, do you want to take all of this? Yeah. Hold on.
- 51:04Shelly Bond: Okay, we're gonna hold on to wait for Philip to go get this book that he's talking about. I'm not sure which one.
- 51:10Tad Eggleston: I love it.
- 51:10Shelly Bond: Oh, it's… Oh, -oh. Of course it's… I have no idea.
- 51:17Shelly Bond: I've been reading quite a few comics lately.
- 51:21Shelly Bond: But my suggestion isn't going to be a paper comic. Shock. Shock of all shocks.
- 51:28Shelly Bond: My… while he's… Searching.
- 51:32Shelly Bond: In the closet.
- 51:35Shelly Bond: I think he's coming back. Okay, I'll just fess up. I am blown to bits by Caroline Cash's Nancy. She's taken over the monthly…
- 51:43Tad Eggleston: I have totally dug it.
- 51:44Shelly Bond: And it is so good. I was a huge Olivia Jane follower.
- 51:50Tad Eggleston: Right?
- 51:51Shelly Bond: I don't know who else could have followed.
- 51:53Shelly Bond: Jane, but Caroline Cash, and she's just absolutely killing it.
- 51:59Shelly Bond: I love Ernie Bushmiller, and I love the meta of it all, so that's my pick. Everybody who's listening, you gotta find it, it's free. Go sign up, or sign up, I think it's on comics.com, it might not be true, but…
- 52:12Tad Eggleston: I think it's Go Comics.
- 52:14Shelly Bond: Go Comics, or follow Carol on Instagram.
- 52:17Tad Eggleston: Follow Carolyn Cash.
- 52:18Shelly Bond: Right?
- 52:19Tad Eggleston: I like Carolyn a lot. I haven't had her on the show yet, but I've talked to her at, like, 5 or 6 shows. I loved her… her Godzilla vs. Chicago comic this year.
- 52:29Tad Eggleston: Which was just… if you haven't… you don't even have to be a Godzilla fan. I am NOT a Godzilla fan.
- 52:35Shelly Bond: Godzilla is my favorite serial killer. I was on a panel this summer. I was on a panel this summer, and someone said, who's your favorite serial killer? Which I thought, that's a really…
- 52:45Shelly Bond: That's a real personal question. I didn't want to answer that question, and then I finally realized it was Godzilla.
- 52:51Shelly Bond: Philip, you're on, we've got 2 minutes. Yeah, I was… I was looking for cold checks. Oh, it's right here, you should have asked, I keep it by my…
- 52:58Shelly Bond: By my,
- 53:00Shelly Bond: computer, where I rock things all the time. Yeah, this is incredible. Cold Chips by Chris King.
- 53:09Tad Eggleston: Cold chips, Kris King.
- 53:12Shelly Bond: British… Which is, like, a… just a beautiful British,
- 53:16Shelly Bond: Seaside. Just, yep. Northern, dilapidated seaside town, which is… which is my home ground. Just a, like, really beautiful book, just sort of…
- 53:28Shelly Bond: Just beautiful, like, Illustrations of windswept beaches and…
- 53:35Tad Eggleston: Oh, I dig it.
- 53:36Shelly Bond: So, the stuff that goes on off-season, which is… which is all year round now, these seaside resorts used to be,
- 53:44Shelly Bond: They used… used to be…
- 53:47Shelly Bond: full of people until all the British started going overseas for the holidays, so, now there's… they're just sort of empty.
- 53:55Shelly Bond: Basically, we… Empty towns. We have two favorite comic shops in the UK, and one is Gosh, of course, because it's in London, it's fabulous, but OK Comics in Leeds.
- 54:07Shelly Bond: Is also a terrific store, and…
- 54:10Shelly Bond: they introduced us to Chris King's work, and…
- 54:15Shelly Bond: I think this was my pick for the best comic of 2025. I read it, I loved it, I bought 3 copies, because I had to give it out to people who I thought would appreciate it, and who deserved it. So, you can find it, you can follow Chris at
- 54:31Shelly Bond: Chris King Art, or at chriskingillustration.com, or support…
- 54:37Tad Eggleston: And he has a big cartel shop that you can buy cold chips at.
- 54:42Shelly Bond: Yep, and also, he has another book that just came out, too, and there… when we say books, Cold Chips is, 7x7, I think, or it's close. It's, it's a beautiful size. I guess it's not Geezer Square, but it's a little wider.
- 55:00Shelly Bond: It's… that's more 8. 8… 8 and a half, I'd say. Eight and a half. Let's trust the artist.
- 55:07Shelly Bond: But that… he's definitely a talent to be watching.
- 55:14Tad Eggleston: Unfortunately, I can't tell if he ships to the US right now.
- 55:17Shelly Bond: Well, if not, it's worth the extra money for shipping.
- 55:22Tad Eggleston: And…
- 55:22Shelly Bond: Sell that Love & Rockets poster. You'll thank me tomorrow.
- 55:27Tad Eggleston: Do you want me to get rid of my Love and Rockets poster?
- 55:30Shelly Bond: Kidding.
- 55:31Shelly Bond: Just kidding.
- 55:33Tad Eggleston: That just feels weird.
- 55:35Shelly Bond: I said I was kidding. I know. I promise you I'm kidding.
- 55:39Tad Eggleston: I'll tell you what.
- 55:40Shelly Bond: I bought 3 copies just for really special people that deserve presents, and I have one more copy left, and it's gonna be on its way to you tomorrow. No, not your copy. Okay.
- 55:52Shelly Bond: the extra.
- 55:53Tad Eggleston: Like I said.
- 55:54Shelly Bond: I bought a… I bought a copy for Philip's dad.
- 55:57Shelly Bond: For Christmas, which he loved.
- 56:00Shelly Bond: And a nice thing people can do.
- 56:03Shelly Bond: to support British shops is to actually buy comics for your overseas friends.
- 56:09Shelly Bond: and relatives.
- 56:11Tad Eggleston: I will have to remember that.
- 56:12Shelly Bond: nice thing about OK Comics, they'll send copies
- 56:15Shelly Bond: to different places for you. Of course, you have to pay, but that's what it's all.
- 56:19Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 56:20Shelly Bond: Make… make money so you can make comics.
- 56:24Shelly Bond: And make more money. To continue making comics and listening to music.
- 56:29Shelly Bond: And on that.
- 56:30Tad Eggleston: And pay for it all.
- 56:31Shelly Bond: Joe Stromer on International Clash Day, and remember, everybody, to know your rights. You have the right to make comic books, because no one can stop you, and the time is now.
- 56:41Shelly Bond: No one can stop you yet.
- 56:44Shelly Bond: Especially if you have 100 frequently asked questions on making comics by Shelly and Philip Bond, working together once again to make your comics life enjoyable.
- 56:57Tad Eggleston: Available on Kickstarter, and let's see, let's see if it's moved… It has.
- 57:02Tad Eggleston: Now we need only, $1,512 to get to… and you're up to 664 backers.
- 57:12Tad Eggleston: I can sell the Lapham piece if I have to. I'll call Maria Lapham to see if she wants to buy it back. You're over your goal, you don't need to…
- 57:21Shelly Bond: That's true.
- 57:22Tad Eggleston: This is not one of the books that you have to let go of precious artwork for, shall I?
- 57:28Shelly Bond: Nobody needs to sell relatives now. All right, all right, there we go. We might want to, but okay.
- 57:35Tad Eggleston: I mean, pick the right one.
- 57:37Shelly Bond: Fun!
- 57:38Tad Eggleston: It's always so much fun, and I can't wait till the next time you're in the Midwest, or I actually make it out to the West Coast, which… I have so many friends in LA now, and two cousins, and therefore places to stay, that one of these days I'll come, but…
- 57:54Shelly Bond: One of these days, one of them is going to owe you an invite because their mom and… will tell your.
- 58:01Tad Eggleston: Oh, I have the invites, it's.
- 58:03Shelly Bond: You have to open up the couch for.
- 58:05Tad Eggleston: Hang on.
- 58:06Shelly Bond: He's got some important business to take care of.
- 58:09Tad Eggleston: I, I, I, I, I, I have.
- 58:12Shelly Bond: the invites, and…
- 58:13Tad Eggleston: And they don't have to open up couches. They're both doing well enough that I'm pretty certain there are guest bedrooms. But I don't have the airfare.
- 58:25Shelly Bond: Yeah. Bye.
- 58:26Tad Eggleston: time or money.
- 58:28Shelly Bond: Well, understood.
- 58:29Tad Eggleston: Remember, I'm a teacher!
- 58:31Shelly Bond: Yes.
- 58:32Tad Eggleston: I make about the same as most comic artists.
- 58:34Shelly Bond: Yeah, probably more, actually, in this day and age.
- 58:39Tad Eggleston: I'm a paraprofessional, so I'm still hourly.
- 58:42Shelly Bond: Okay.
- 58:42Tad Eggleston: My wife makes more than a lot of comic artists.
- 58:45Shelly Bond: Alright, well, again.
- 58:46Tad Eggleston: She's my sugar mama. My sugar mama is a part… is a… is a public… public school art teacher.
- 58:52Shelly Bond: Nice! That's right.
- 58:54Shelly Bond: Yeah. Nice!
- 58:55Tad Eggleston: Yeah.
- 58:55Tad Eggleston: So, always fantastic, guys. I can't wait till the next excuse to talk to you, because it's always a blast. Happy Clash Day to everybody.
- 59:06Tad Eggleston: Lord.
- 59:07Tad Eggleston: Shelly and Philip Bond, this has been 22 Panels. We will see you after the next page.
