- 0:00Speaker 1: Donna Jackson takes her husband Victor aboard Harvey Davis's yacht,
- 0:04Speaker 1: hoping distance from home may break the hold of alcoholism
- 0:07Speaker 1: and suspicion. Instead, a sea voyage leaves three people isolated
- 0:12Speaker 1: on a remote island, with supplies running low and fresh
- 0:15Speaker 1: water uncertain. From CBS on August 22, 1942, this is
- 0:21Speaker 1: episode 15 of The Whistler, Death Has a Thirst, written
- 0:26Speaker 1: and directed by J. Donald Wilson, with music by Wilbur Hatch.
- 0:30Speaker 1: We now take you back to the original broadcast.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Wait a minute. Have you heard the weird tales of
- 0:38Speaker 2: The Whistler?
- 0:58Speaker 3: I'm the whistler.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Here's the sanitarium, Harvey.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Is he still unconscious?
- 1:15Speaker 5: Yes.
- 1:16Speaker 6: Here comes the attendant.
- 1:17Speaker 2: We're all ready for him, Mr.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Jackson.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Take your seat, Harold. Oh, had to tie him, eh? Yes,
- 1:24Speaker 2: I had to give him a good one on the chin.
- 1:25Speaker 6: You'll have to watch him. He may try to get
- 1:27Speaker 6: away when he comes to.
- 1:28Speaker 2: Don't worry, we've got a lot of tough cases here.
- 1:30Speaker 6: Don't let him know who brought him here.
- 1:31Speaker 2: And don't let him know I had anything to do
- 1:33Speaker 2: with it. Leave everything to us. It's a two-hour drive
- 1:36Speaker 2: back to the city, Donna.
- 1:37Speaker 7: Yes, sir.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Well, I'll phone you tomorrow.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Good. If anything happens, we'll call you.
- 1:41Speaker 6: Thank you.
- 1:42Speaker 8: Good night.
- 1:49Speaker 9: Saturday night, and again, CBS presents The Whistler. I, The Whistler,
- 2:00Speaker 9: know many things, for I walk by night.
- 2:04Speaker 10: I know many strange tales. I know many secrets hidden
- 2:08Speaker 10: in the hearts of men and women who have stepped
- 2:10Speaker 10: into the shadows. And so I tell you tonight the
- 2:13Speaker 10: mysterious tale of Death Has a Thirst. The long black
- 2:23Speaker 10: car with the handsome man at the wheel and the
- 2:25Speaker 10: woman beside him returns to the highway and speeds on
- 2:28Speaker 10: through the night. The man and woman sit staring ahead,
- 2:32Speaker 10: lost in thought. The man is Harvey Davis.
- 2:35Speaker 7: The woman, Mrs.
- 2:36Speaker 10: Victor Jackson, wife of the unconscious man recently deposited at
- 2:40Speaker 10: the sanitarium.
- 2:43Speaker 8: I'm sorry I dragged you into this, Harvey.
- 2:45Speaker 6: But I had to have some help and I knew
- 2:47Speaker 6: I could depend on you.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's all right, Donna. I only hope it'll do some good.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Victor never drank a drop while we were in school.
- 2:53Speaker 8: He didn't drink when we were first married. But after
- 2:56Speaker 8: his father died and Victor took over the business, he started.
- 2:58Speaker 2: It's a huge concern, and I guess he just couldn't
- 3:01Speaker 2: take it. He's always had an inferiority complex.
- 3:04Speaker 8: But the thing that hurts me most is that the
- 3:06Speaker 8: drinking has completely changed him. Why, he's suspicious of every
- 3:09Speaker 8: move I make.
- 3:11Speaker 6: He accuses me of the most disgraceful things.
- 3:13Speaker 8: He accuses me of lying to him about everything and
- 3:16Speaker 8: of being in love with.
- 3:18Speaker 6: With other men.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Oh.
- 3:20Speaker 6: Countless things.
- 3:21Speaker 2: Other men? What men?
- 3:24Speaker 6: Any men I speak to. Even you, Harvey.
- 3:27Speaker 11: Me?
- 3:28Speaker 2: Well, after all, if he's going to be suspicious of
- 3:30Speaker 2: any man, it would logically be me.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Why?
- 3:33Speaker 2: You've brought most of your troubles to me. He knows that.
- 3:36Speaker 2: I'm as good a victim as any. He knows I'm
- 3:39Speaker 2: terribly fond of you.
- 3:41Speaker 6: Are you, Harvey?
- 3:42Speaker 2: From the first day I met you, I said, here's
- 3:44Speaker 2: a woman. A strong woman. Maybe she'll develop some backbone
- 3:48Speaker 2: in my willy-nilly friend, Victor.
- 3:51Speaker 6: That's very nicely put, Harvey.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Let's hope the sanitarium does him some good.
- 3:55Speaker 6: If it doesn't, I don't know what I'll do.
- 3:58Speaker 2: Don't worry, Donna. Just remember, I'll do anything for you.
- 4:02Speaker 6: Thank you, Harvey.
- 4:11Speaker 10: About Midnight The black sedan arrives at the Jackson mansion.
- 4:16Speaker 10: The butler greets Harvey and Donna at the door.
- 4:19Speaker 7: Evening, Mrs.
- 4:20Speaker 5: Jackson.
- 4:20Speaker 6: Evening, Mr.
- 4:21Speaker 5: Davis.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Evening.
- 4:22Speaker 6: Dr.
- 4:23Speaker 7: Saunders is in the library, ma'am. He's waiting for you.
- 4:26Speaker 11: Dr.
- 4:26Speaker 6: Saunders at this hour? What on earth does he want?
- 4:29Speaker 2: You'd better see him, Donna. Maybe he knows.
- 4:32Speaker 6: How could he? Come with me, Harvey.
- 4:35Speaker 5: Of course.
- 4:36Speaker 6: Oh, good evening, Dr.
- 4:38Speaker 2: Saunders.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Good evening, Donna. Good evening.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Evening, Harvey. Hello, Doctor.
- 4:42Speaker 6: This is quite a surprise.
- 4:43Speaker 3: I can imagine. I, um.
- 4:46Speaker 6: Harvey and I, we've just been for a little drive.
- 4:49Speaker 6: I felt I needed some air.
- 4:50Speaker 3: All right, so?
- 4:53Speaker 6: Did you come to see Victor?
- 4:54Speaker 3: Victor isn't here.
- 4:56Speaker 7: Really?
- 4:57Speaker 3: But I know where he is.
- 4:59Speaker 6: You do?
- 5:00Speaker 3: He's in a cheap dive of a rooming house downtown.
- 5:03Speaker 4: What?
- 5:03Speaker 2: But that's impossible.
- 5:05Speaker 3: That's where he always goes.
- 5:06Speaker 6: Well, you're wrong this time, Doctor. I took him by
- 5:09Speaker 6: force to a sanitarium tonight. Harvey, help me. Maybe they
- 5:12Speaker 6: can do something for him.
- 5:13Speaker 3: You told the sanitarium that I was his physician, didn't you?
- 5:16Speaker 6: Yes.
- 5:18Speaker 3: Well, they called me an hour ago. He's escaped. What?
- 5:21Speaker 3: They said he came to and broke away from them.
- 5:24Speaker 3: I know where he usually goes, and I can find him.
- 5:27Speaker 3: If you want me to find him.
- 5:29Speaker 6: What are you inferring, Doctor?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Donna, I know what you've been through with Victor. I
- 5:35Speaker 3: know what a trial it's been... I've tried and you've tried.
- 5:39Speaker 3: We've all tried everything we could do to make him stop.
- 5:42Speaker 3: Not many women would have put up with what you have.
- 5:45Speaker 3: We've dragged him through before. We probably can do it again.
- 5:48Speaker 3: I just thought, well, maybe you'd had enough.
- 5:54Speaker 6: You do know where he is?
- 5:56Speaker 3: Yes, I'm pretty sure I know.
- 5:57Speaker 6: Well, then find him. I'm determined to cure him if
- 6:00Speaker 6: I have to take him to a desert island.
- 6:02Speaker 2: That's an idea. A long ocean trip might be the answer.
- 6:07Speaker 3: After hog time.
- 6:07Speaker 6: I could do that, too.
- 6:09Speaker 7: Very well.
- 6:10Speaker 3: I'll have a talk with him. I'll phone you in
- 6:12Speaker 3: the morning. Good night.
- 6:14Speaker 6: Good night, Doctor.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Oh, Harvey.
- 6:18Speaker 5: No, no, no.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You've done your best, Donna.
- 6:21Speaker 6: Oh, but I feel so hopeless. I don't know what
- 6:24Speaker 6: to do.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Try the desert island.
- 6:28Speaker 6: Why not? Harvey, it might work, mind it. You can help.
- 6:34Speaker 6: Your yacht.
- 6:34Speaker 5: Dr.
- 6:35Speaker 6: Saunders may be right. Oh, at least it's worth a try.
- 6:38Speaker 2: I wonder.
- 6:39Speaker 6: Please, Harvey, it may be the answer.
- 6:40Speaker 2: I can't get away just now, but if you're determined,
- 6:43Speaker 2: you're welcome to the aunt.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Oh, please, I'd feel better if you came along.
- 6:48Speaker 2: All right, Donna. I'll go. I'll arrange it. But he
- 6:52Speaker 2: won't want to come.
- 6:53Speaker 6: We'll take him aboard by force.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Shanghai?
- 6:55Speaker 5: Well, all right.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Just let me know when you find him, and I'll
- 7:00Speaker 2: arrange everything. All right.
- 7:12Speaker 6: He sure was plastered. Well, I'll leave you alone.
- 7:16Speaker 2: With him, Doctor.
- 7:17Speaker 3: Thanks. That hypo will bring him out of this. Victor. Victor.
- 7:25Speaker 5: What?
- 7:27Speaker 2: What's going on here? Who are you? Get away.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Quiet, quiet. Take it easy, Victor.
- 7:32Speaker 11: Huh?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Who are you?
- 7:35Speaker 3: Doc Saunders.
- 7:36Speaker 2: Doc?
- 7:39Speaker 3: What do you want? I want to talk to you, Victor.
- 7:41Speaker 3: It's very important.
- 7:42Speaker 5: Yes.
- 7:43Speaker 3: Come on, Victor, snap out of it.
- 7:45Speaker 2: Hey, what's the idea?
- 7:47Speaker 3: What'd you slap me for? To wake you up, I've
- 7:50Speaker 3: got to talk to you. Oh, hello, Doc. What are
- 7:54Speaker 3: you after? Is your head clear? I guess so. Then
- 7:59Speaker 3: listen to me. You know where you are? Yeah, yeah,
- 8:03Speaker 3: my old heart. You know how you got here? No.
- 8:07Speaker 3: Let me see. No, I can't seem to remember. Well,
- 8:11Speaker 3: I'll tell you where you're going. if you don't pull
- 8:14Speaker 3: yourself together.
- 8:15Speaker 2: Where?
- 8:15Speaker 3: To the insane asylum. Did you say asylum? I did.
- 8:21Speaker 3: I haven't told you this, but your great-grandfather died insane.
- 8:25Speaker 7: What?
- 8:26Speaker 3: And that was your father's greatest fear, that he would
- 8:28Speaker 3: be a victim. And there's nothing that hastens final mental
- 8:32Speaker 3: breakdown more than alcohol. Insanity?
- 8:36Speaker 2: Are you just telling me that?
- 8:37Speaker 3: No, I can prove it.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Good Lord.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Do you want that to happen to you? Well, no, no.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Oh, but I.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Well, I just can't seem to quit.
- 8:46Speaker 3: You're going away, Vic.
- 8:48Speaker 5: Away?
- 8:49Speaker 7: Where?
- 8:50Speaker 3: I'm sending you on a long voyage with no liquor. Oh, no. No,
- 8:54Speaker 3: you're not.
- 8:54Speaker 2: No, now, I'll get hold of myself.
- 8:56Speaker 3: You said that before.
- 8:57Speaker 2: I can take it or leave it alone if I
- 8:58Speaker 2: want to.
- 8:59Speaker 3: But you haven't so far. You've gone from bad to worse.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Now you're going where you can't get it.
- 9:04Speaker 7: But, Doc, I can't. I'd die.
- 9:07Speaker 2: I couldn't stand it.
- 9:07Speaker 3: You'll stand it and like it. If I have to
- 9:10Speaker 3: kill you. No.
- 9:11Speaker 5: No.
- 9:12Speaker 11: No, I won't be pushed around by anyone. I know
- 9:14Speaker 11: who's back of this, don't I? She wants to get
- 9:17Speaker 11: rid of me.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Asylum, yeah. Yeah, that'd suit her fine.
- 9:20Speaker 7: She'd like that. So she can cavort around with Harvey
- 9:22Speaker 7: and all the others.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Shut up, Vic.
- 9:24Speaker 7: You're all planning to get rid of me. You don't
- 9:25Speaker 7: like me.
- 9:26Speaker 3: You're taking a trip.
- 9:27Speaker 7: Get rid of me and you all share in the estate. Well,
- 9:29Speaker 7: you'll see how much good it'll do.
- 9:33Speaker 3: But you are taking a trip, Victor.
- 9:44Speaker 10: And now, here you are, Victor, several hundred miles at sea.
- 9:50Speaker 10: And worried, too, aren't you, Victor? That talk about insanity
- 9:54Speaker 10: really upsets you. You believe it, too, don't you?
- 10:02Speaker 3: What's this? Where am I? Donna.
- 10:07Speaker 6: Do you feel better?
- 10:08Speaker 2: What is it? It's moving. I feel dizzy.
- 10:12Speaker 6: I don't think you're dizzy. We're on a boat, darling.
- 10:16Speaker 2: What boat?
- 10:17Speaker 6: We're on a boat in the middle of the ocean.
- 10:18Speaker 5: A boat? Yes.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Doc Saunders.
- 10:22Speaker 7: That's what he said.
- 10:22Speaker 5: A voyage.
- 10:23Speaker 2: It's his idea.
- 10:24Speaker 8: Oh, now, Victor.
- 10:24Speaker 6: Everything's going to be all right.
- 10:26Speaker 11: I know what you're planning to do. You're planning to
- 10:28Speaker 11: kill me. You want to get rid of me. Want
- 10:30Speaker 11: me to die.
- 10:31Speaker 6: You won't die.
- 10:31Speaker 7: Whose boat is this?
- 10:32Speaker 6: Harvey's yacht.
- 10:34Speaker 5: Harvey.
- 10:35Speaker 7: Now I know it's a plot. Now I know what
- 10:37Speaker 7: it's all about. You and Harvey.
- 10:40Speaker 5: That's it.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Don't be ridiculous, Victor. Harvey consented to let me have
- 10:43Speaker 6: the yacht.
- 10:44Speaker 3: Is he on board?
- 10:45Speaker 6: Yes.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Of course.
- 10:47Speaker 7: You and Harvey and me are prisoners. What a perfect setup.
- 10:50Speaker 6: You don't mean that, Victor.
- 10:51Speaker 7: I've been suspicious of you two all along. Who else
- 10:54Speaker 7: is on board?
- 10:55Speaker 6: Nobody but the captain and the crew of four. And
- 10:58Speaker 6: Harvey and the doctor.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Where are you taking me?
- 11:00Speaker 6: We're just cruising.
- 11:01Speaker 3: Just cruising?
- 11:03Speaker 7: Will you find the right spot?
- 11:04Speaker 6: Right spot for what?
- 11:05Speaker 7: To dump me overboard. No one will ever know, will they?
- 11:08Speaker 7: And you'll say I jumped over.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I was washed over the side.
- 11:12Speaker 6: Oh, Victor, what has happened to you? You're like a
- 11:16Speaker 6: stranger to me. I just don't know you. It doesn't
- 11:21Speaker 6: seem possible that you're the man I married. My darling,
- 11:23Speaker 6: what's happened to you?
- 11:25Speaker 7: Don't you know?
- 11:26Speaker 6: If I only did.
- 11:27Speaker 5: I'm crazy. Insane.
- 11:30Speaker 7: Surely you knew that.
- 11:32Speaker 11: My great-grandfather was insane, and my grandfather, and undoubtedly my father,
- 11:35Speaker 11: so why not me?
- 11:36Speaker 6: You're talking nonsense.
- 11:37Speaker 2: No.
- 11:38Speaker 7: Hasn't Doc Saunders told you what he knows? I know.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Oh, come now.
- 11:41Speaker 7: You three are closer than that.
- 11:42Speaker 6: Stop talking such nonsense. I won't listen.
- 11:45Speaker 7: I'm getting out of this cabin. I can't stand to
- 11:47Speaker 7: be cooped up like this.
- 11:48Speaker 5: Oh, no.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Please stay here for a while, Victor.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Please.
- 11:49Speaker 5: Please.
- 11:50Speaker 6: Here, I brought you some milk. Please drink it.
- 11:54Speaker 2: Milk?
- 11:56Speaker 7: Ah, got a funny color to it. And it smells strange.
- 12:01Speaker 7: What's in it, arsenic?
- 12:02Speaker 6: It's just plain milk, Victor. Now drink it.
- 12:06Speaker 7: Do you like milk, Donna?
- 12:07Speaker 6: Yes, I love milk.
- 12:09Speaker 7: Then drink it yourself.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Victor!
- 12:11Speaker 6: Oh, all over my dress.
- 12:12Speaker 7: You're trying to poison me, that's it. Now get out
- 12:14Speaker 7: of here.
- 12:15Speaker 3: Get out.
- 12:15Speaker 6: Oh, Victor, please, darling.
- 12:17Speaker 8: Get out!
- 12:17Speaker 1: Victor!
- 12:28Speaker 7: Oh, what do you want, Doc?
- 12:30Speaker 3: How do you feel, Victor?
- 12:32Speaker 7: They're trying to kill me. They plan to kill me.
- 12:35Speaker 5: Who?
- 12:35Speaker 7: Donna and Harvey. She just brought me some milk and
- 12:38Speaker 7: it had poison in it. I could tell by the color.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I think you're imagining things, Victor.
- 12:42Speaker 11: No, no, I'm not.
- 12:44Speaker 7: They want me out of the way. I can tell.
- 12:45Speaker 3: What made you think the milk was poison? It was
- 12:49Speaker 3: a purplish color.
- 12:50Speaker 7: Here, here's the glass. Smell it. Hmm, maybe I'm not
- 12:56Speaker 7: so crazy after all.
- 12:57Speaker 3: I didn't say you were crazy. I only want you
- 12:59Speaker 3: to stop drinking. Drink may bring it on. Doc, where
- 13:04Speaker 3: would they get poison? Oh, come now, forget it.
- 13:08Speaker 7: Do you know where they get poison, Doc?
- 13:12Speaker 3: I'll see you later, Victor.
- 13:14Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 13:16Speaker 2: THE END.
- 13:24Speaker 6: Did you send for me, Doctor?
- 13:26Speaker 3: Yes. Did you take some milk to Victor?
- 13:29Speaker 6: Yes, I did.
- 13:30Speaker 3: What did you put in it?
- 13:31Speaker 6: Why should I put anything in it?
- 13:33Speaker 3: Victor thinks you did.
- 13:34Speaker 6: You should know me better than that, Doctor.
- 13:37Speaker 3: You did put something in it?
- 13:39Speaker 6: Oh, yes, I did. Some of that red liquid to
- 13:41Speaker 6: make him quiet.
- 13:42Speaker 3: Oh, yes, of course. That's what it was.
- 13:47Speaker 6: He threw it all over me.
- 13:49Speaker 10: Oh, I.
- 13:50Speaker 8: I'm thoroughly disgusted, Doctor. I... I can't go on with
- 13:53Speaker 8: him this way. He isn't drinking, but there's something wrong.
- 13:57Speaker 8: I decided to give it up as a bad job.
- 14:00Speaker 6: I'm going to get a divorce.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Divorce? I'm afraid it's too late for that, Donna.
- 14:08Speaker 6: Too late? Why, what do you mean?
- 14:10Speaker 3: Well, there's something I haven't told you. I've been hoping
- 14:12Speaker 3: it wouldn't be necessary. But after today, I've given.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Up all hope.
- 14:17Speaker 6: Why can't I get a divorce?
- 14:18Speaker 3: You can't get a divorce from an insane person.
- 14:22Speaker 5: Insane? Good heavens.
- 14:25Speaker 3: It's been a secret in Victor's family for several generations.
- 14:28Speaker 3: Not even Victor knew it. It touched his father ever
- 14:32Speaker 3: so lightly, but Victor has all the symptoms. And the
- 14:36Speaker 3: liquor has hastened the crack-up. I couldn't be certain as
- 14:39Speaker 3: long as he was drinking. But today, I realized the truth.
- 14:42Speaker 6: Well, I'm bewildered. I've never been so shocked in my life.
- 14:49Speaker 6: I wish you hadn't told me.
- 14:50Speaker 3: I'm sorry, Donna. I wanted you to be on your guard.
- 14:55Speaker 3: He has some strange hallucination about you and Harvey. He
- 14:59Speaker 3: thinks you're planning to do away with him.
- 15:01Speaker 6: Do away with him? Oh, but that's ridiculous. I've never
- 15:05Speaker 6: had such a thought.
- 15:07Speaker 3: Never.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Oh, but now I am frightened. Doctor, what about Alice?
- 15:13Speaker 3: Your daughter's only eight years old. no symptoms and it
- 15:16Speaker 3: may miss her entirely.
- 15:17Speaker 6: But think what this will mean if this gets out
- 15:20Speaker 6: about Victor. It may ruin her whole life.
- 15:22Speaker 3: I understand that.
- 15:23Speaker 6: That must never happen. It must remain a secret.
- 15:25Speaker 2: That'll be difficult.
- 15:27Speaker 3: It's going to be hard to handle when that craving returns.
- 15:29Speaker 6: Yes, it will. I'll think of something. I'll find a way.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Doctor, come quickly.
- 15:38Speaker 7: It's Harvey Davis.
- 15:39Speaker 3: What's wrong, Captain?
- 15:39Speaker 2: Caught him in his bunk with a cord around his neck.
- 15:41Speaker 3: Good heavens. Quiet, Donna. Come along.
- 15:48Speaker 6: Is he dead?
- 15:49Speaker 3: No, he's breathing. Found him just in time. He'll be
- 15:52Speaker 3: all right in a few minutes.
- 15:53Speaker 6: Thank heaven.
- 15:54Speaker 3: Harvey, Harvey.
- 15:55Speaker 6: Harvey.
- 15:57Speaker 5: Donna, what's wrong?
- 15:59Speaker 2: What's happened?
- 16:00Speaker 3: Nothing much, Harvey. Just a little accident. You'll be all right.
- 16:03Speaker 5: Oh, my throat.
- 16:04Speaker 3: What's going on? You don't remember? No, I was just
- 16:08Speaker 3: taking a little nap. My feet were so high I'd
- 16:10Speaker 3: been choked. Better tell him, Donna. Come along, Captain. Any
- 16:16Speaker 3: liquor aboard, Captain?
- 16:18Speaker 2: Yes, Doctor. Several bottles in the locker in my cabin.
- 16:20Speaker 3: Let's have a look.
- 16:22Speaker 2: I keep it locked because, uh... Hey, it's been jimmied. Well,
- 16:28Speaker 2: what do you know? It's all gone.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I expected that.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I'll skin those men alive.
- 16:33Speaker 3: Don't blame the men, Captain.
- 16:34Speaker 2: What do you mean? What the devil is that? We've
- 16:40Speaker 2: hit something. Come on.
- 16:45Speaker 7: Captain.
- 16:46Speaker 2: What is it, man?
- 16:47Speaker 3: What's wrong with you?
- 16:48Speaker 2: The boilers blew up. We must have hit a reef.
- 16:51Speaker 7: All three of the men of the crew were down there.
- 16:54Speaker 7: We've got to abandon.
- 16:56Speaker 2: I'm hurt bad, Captain.
- 16:57Speaker 3: He's dead.
- 17:00Speaker 2: See to the light boat. Round up the others.
- 17:02Speaker 7: I'll go below.
- 17:03Speaker 3: Yes, Captain.
- 17:08Speaker 11: Murphy!
- 17:09Speaker 5: Jones!
- 17:09Speaker 1: Murphy!
- 17:10Speaker 2: Are you there? Good Lord, what a mess. I can't imagine....
- 17:26Speaker 7: Two days pass.
- 17:28Speaker 10: The sun beats down relentlessly on the five survivors in
- 17:31Speaker 10: the open boat. The doctor watches anxiously over the still
- 17:35Speaker 10: unconscious captain. Donna and Harvey keep a constant eye on Victor,
- 17:40Speaker 10: who sits alone in the end of the boat, staring
- 17:43Speaker 10: at the horizon.
- 17:44Speaker 2: How's the captain, doctor?
- 17:46Speaker 3: Still holding his own. Must have had a bad fall
- 17:49Speaker 3: down that companionway.
- 17:50Speaker 2: I don't think he fell.
- 17:52Speaker 3: Good thing you went down after him.
- 17:53Speaker 2: We're running low on water. I hope we sight some
- 17:55Speaker 2: land today. How much water have you left in your canteen, Donna?
- 17:57Speaker 6: A couple.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Hey, look over there. What's that?
- 18:00Speaker 2: Why, it's a ship. No, it's land. An island. Grab
- 18:04Speaker 2: an oar, Victor. Come on, Doc. Well, I've looked all around.
- 18:15Speaker 2: This place is as barren of food and water as
- 18:17Speaker 2: the Sahara Desert. I'm afraid if we do locate any water,
- 18:20Speaker 2: it won't be fit to drink. There must be water.
- 18:22Speaker 2: What do you care about water? You've got a canteen
- 18:24Speaker 2: full of whiskey. How much water is left?
- 18:26Speaker 6: I have some and Dr. Saunders has some.
- 18:27Speaker 2: So I'd better get busy. Although my experiences on these
- 18:30Speaker 2: islands haven't been so good.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Here's a chance to put your chemistry to use, Harvey.
- 18:35Speaker 3: You know the test for lead and zinc?
- 18:37Speaker 6: Yes.
- 18:38Speaker 3: I'll give you two vials, some sodium sulfide tablets and
- 18:41Speaker 3: some potassium chromate. You know the test. One tablet of
- 18:44Speaker 3: each and ten cc's of water. A dark precipitate means poison.
- 18:48Speaker 2: Yes, I know. Thanks, Doc. Well, I'll start off and
- 18:52Speaker 2: keep a direct line to the other side. Wherever that is.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Wait a minute, Harvey.
- 18:56Speaker 11: I think I'll go with you.
- 18:57Speaker 2: Oh, why?
- 18:58Speaker 7: Oh, maybe I can help.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I'd go with you, Harvey, but I'd better keep my
- 19:02Speaker 3: eye on the captain. He's the only one who knows
- 19:04Speaker 3: where we are. I've got to pull him through.
- 19:06Speaker 2: That's all right, Doc. I don't need any help.
- 19:07Speaker 3: I think I'll go anyway.
- 19:10Speaker 5: All right.
- 19:11Speaker 2: If you insist, come on.
- 19:12Speaker 6: Harvey, wait.
- 19:13Speaker 5: I'm going, too.
- 19:14Speaker 12: Why?
- 19:15Speaker 6: Because I want to.
- 19:16Speaker 3: We don't need you.
- 19:17Speaker 6: But I'm coming, just the same. Please, Harvey, I'd like
- 19:21Speaker 6: to come.
- 19:21Speaker 5: All right.
- 19:22Speaker 2: Let's go.
- 19:24Speaker 5: It's certainly hot.
- 19:34Speaker 2: How do you feel, Donna?
- 19:36Speaker 6: All right. How far have we come?
- 19:39Speaker 2: Oh, ten miles, I should say. was a pretty big
- 19:42Speaker 2: island at that, and nothing but desert.
- 19:44Speaker 7: Are you sure those last two water holes were poisoned?
- 19:47Speaker 2: Certainly. Look good to me.
- 19:49Speaker 8: I'm getting mighty thirsty.
- 19:50Speaker 2: Better quit drinking that whiskey. It'll only make you thirstier.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Harvey, can I have a little water?
- 19:55Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Donna, but you'll have to suffer it as
- 19:58Speaker 2: long as you can.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Please wait.
- 20:00Speaker 6: Do you suppose we'll ever get out of here?
- 20:03Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 20:04Speaker 6: Oh, it's all my fault. What a shame to get
- 20:08Speaker 6: you into such a mess. Please forgive me, Harvey.
- 20:11Speaker 2: There's nothing to forgive, Donna. I'd do it again a
- 20:14Speaker 2: hundred times over for you.
- 20:16Speaker 6: Would you, Harvey?
- 20:17Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Poor Victor, what a sad thing.
- 20:21Speaker 6: No one must ever know, Harvey. Promise me if we
- 20:24Speaker 6: get out of this, promise me you'll never let anyone know.
- 20:28Speaker 2: No one will ever learn from me.
- 20:33Speaker 7: I got him. I got him.
- 20:34Speaker 2: What on earth?
- 20:35Speaker 6: How did he get a gun?
- 20:35Speaker 2: Where'd he get it?
- 20:36Speaker 6: Come on.
- 20:37Speaker 7: I got him.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Look.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Look.
- 20:38Speaker 11: A lizard. A big one.
- 20:40Speaker 2: I knew we'd find something.
- 20:41Speaker 11: Put that down.
- 20:41Speaker 2: You can't eat that. There must be water around here.
- 20:43Speaker 7: There must be.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Where'd you get that gun?
- 20:44Speaker 7: Out of the captain's locker.
- 20:45Speaker 2: Better take it easy with those shells. We may need them.
- 20:48Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:49Speaker 2: Maybe I will.
- 20:50Speaker 7: Have a drink?
- 20:51Speaker 5: No.
- 20:52Speaker 7: All right. I'd sure like some water.
- 20:58Speaker 6: How about it?
- 20:59Speaker 2: There's just enough for one of us to get back.
- 21:01Speaker 2: If only one goes back, it'll be Donna.
- 21:03Speaker 7: Donna.
- 21:04Speaker 2: How chivalrous. Who's got the water?
- 21:07Speaker 3: I have.
- 21:07Speaker 5: Come on.
- 21:08Speaker 2: Let's keep moving. There's water around here.
- 21:09Speaker 7: There must be. Now I'm going to find it.
- 21:11Speaker 12: Donna, if we don't find water, he's going to start
- 21:13Speaker 12: pleading for what you have. No matter how much he
- 21:16Speaker 12: raves or pleads, don't give it to him. Even if
- 21:18Speaker 12: he threatens us with a gun. Tell him he drank
- 21:21Speaker 12: it all. I want you to have the best break
- 21:23Speaker 12: out of this.
- 21:23Speaker 3: Thanks, Harvey.
- 21:24Speaker 6: I appreciate that.
- 21:25Speaker 5: I found it. Water.
- 21:26Speaker 8: I found water.
- 21:27Speaker 7: Hurry, Donna.
- 21:28Speaker 11: Hurry. Hurry.
- 21:35Speaker 2: Well, what about it?
- 21:38Speaker 7: What's the test show?
- 21:39Speaker 2: Just like all the rest. Full of lead and zinc
- 21:41Speaker 2: and heaven knows what else.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Poison, huh?
- 21:44Speaker 2: Where's Jen? How about some of that water? What water?
- 21:48Speaker 7: In Donna's canteen.
- 21:49Speaker 2: There isn't any more.
- 21:50Speaker 5: Who drank it?
- 21:51Speaker 6: I did. You both did.
- 21:53Speaker 7: You left none for me.
- 21:54Speaker 2: You've got your whiskey.
- 21:55Speaker 7: I can't drink whiskey all the time.
- 21:56Speaker 6: You've done pretty well on it for several years.
- 21:58Speaker 7: I've got to have some water.
- 21:59Speaker 6: Harvey, won't you?
- 22:00Speaker 2: Harvey, Harvey, Harvey.
- 22:01Speaker 7: Is that all you think about, Harvey?
- 22:02Speaker 2: You should have married Harvey.
- 22:03Speaker 6: Perhaps you're right about that.
- 22:06Speaker 7: Are you sure that water's poison?
- 22:08Speaker 2: I'm not drinking it. And I'm thirsty, too.
- 22:10Speaker 7: Maybe you're just waiting.
- 22:11Speaker 8: For what?
- 22:13Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 22:14Speaker 7: But I can imagine a few things.
- 22:15Speaker 2: We'd better stop here for the night. Are you very tired, Donna?
- 22:19Speaker 3: Awfully.
- 22:20Speaker 2: Better try and get some sleep. Where are you going, Victor?
- 22:23Speaker 2: Just going to look around.
- 22:25Speaker 7: May find something. I'm hungry.
- 22:27Speaker 2: I'm going to build a fire with this brush. Don't
- 22:28Speaker 2: get too far away.
- 22:29Speaker 5: I'll be around. Don't worry.
- 22:30Speaker 12: Keep a close watch on your canteen, Donna. I have
- 22:33Speaker 12: an idea what he's up to. I'll try not to sleep,
- 22:35Speaker 12: but I'm dead tired.
- 22:37Speaker 6: I'll do my best, Harvey.
- 22:38Speaker 2: If he goes to sleep, I'll try to get that
- 22:40Speaker 2: gun away from him.
- 22:43Speaker 5: Good night, Donna.
- 22:44Speaker 6: Good night, Harvey.
- 22:55Speaker 7: Night comes on. The fire burns low. Only a red
- 23:00Speaker 7: glow remains.
- 23:01Speaker 10: Donna, in spite of herself, drops off into a sound sleep.
- 23:06Speaker 10: Victor stirs from his place 20 feet away, looks about him,
- 23:10Speaker 10: and crawls silently toward the sleeping Donna.
- 23:14Speaker 2: Put it down.
- 23:15Speaker 3: I want some water.
- 23:15Speaker 2: There isn't any more. I think there is. You heard
- 23:17Speaker 2: what I said.
- 23:18Speaker 3: You're lying.
- 23:18Speaker 7: You have got some.
- 23:19Speaker 6: Victor, what is it?
- 23:20Speaker 7: You've got some water and you won't give me any. Harvey.
- 23:22Speaker 2: I'm wise to you.
- 23:23Speaker 3: You don't want me to have any.
- 23:24Speaker 7: You want me to die. You're in love with each other.
- 23:26Speaker 2: You're drunk.
- 23:27Speaker 6: What if I am in love with Harvey? What of it?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Donna.
- 23:30Speaker 7: You want me out of the way. Either of you
- 23:32Speaker 7: is very thirsty.
- 23:33Speaker 4: No.
- 23:34Speaker 7: Because you had some water. And you got it out
- 23:36Speaker 7: of that pool. You're lying to me. It's good water.
- 23:38Speaker 2: You're crazy.
- 23:39Speaker 3: You sneaked it out of there.
- 23:40Speaker 2: While I was asleep.
- 23:42Speaker 7: You tried to make me think it was poison.
- 23:44Speaker 2: I ought to shoot you both. All right, Victor, if
- 23:47Speaker 2: you're so positive. Go on down and drink out of
- 23:50Speaker 2: the pool.
- 23:52Speaker 3: That gives me an idea.
- 23:55Speaker 7: I'll just find out if that water's poison. Go drink
- 23:58Speaker 7: some of it, Harvey.
- 23:59Speaker 2: Certainly not.
- 24:00Speaker 7: I'll give you 30 seconds. It's poison, Victor. Go ahead,
- 24:03Speaker 7: drink or I'll shoot.
- 24:04Speaker 6: No, don't do it, Harvey.
- 24:05Speaker 7: Then supposing you drink some, Donna?
- 24:08Speaker 6: Very well, I will.
- 24:09Speaker 2: Victor, it'll kill her.
- 24:10Speaker 11: Donna, wait.
- 24:11Speaker 2: I'll drink it. You're a fool, Victor. But come along.
- 24:17Speaker 7: This is going to be very interesting.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Not as much as you think.
- 24:20Speaker 5: Get off of me.
- 24:24Speaker 7: Maybe that'll hold you, Harvey. Harvey.
- 24:29Speaker 2: I'm all right down there. Just hit my shoulder. I
- 24:34Speaker 2: hope you're satisfied now that it is poison, Victor.
- 24:37Speaker 7: Maybe. But you two are getting water for some place.
- 24:41Speaker 5: All right.
- 24:42Speaker 7: Hand over that canteen, Donner.
- 24:44Speaker 2: Please, Victor. That's for Donner.
- 24:45Speaker 7: I'll take care of it for.
- 24:46Speaker 5: All of us.
- 24:47Speaker 7: And if either of you make a move toward me,
- 24:49Speaker 7: I'll shoot both of you. Good night. And sleep tight,
- 24:53Speaker 7: both of you.
- 25:01Speaker 10: The night slowly fades. The chill of dawn creeps in.
- 25:06Speaker 10: Then as the sun comes over the horizon, Harvey stirs fretfully,
- 25:10Speaker 10: opens his eyes and looks for Donner, She sits beyond
- 25:13Speaker 10: the dead embers of the campfire, her hands folded before her,
- 25:17Speaker 10: staring blankly into space. Harvey raises up with a start
- 25:21Speaker 10: and moves quickly to her side. Victor is sprawled on
- 25:25Speaker 10: his back, the hilt of a hunting knife protruding from
- 25:28Speaker 10: his breast.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Donna.
- 25:30Speaker 11: Donna.
- 25:31Speaker 5: Good.
- 25:33Speaker 2: What's happened to Victor?
- 25:36Speaker 6: He's dead, Harvey.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Dead?
- 25:39Speaker 5: At night?
- 25:41Speaker 2: By Jules, Donna.
- 25:43Speaker 6: Yes, it's mine. Now no one will ever know. Will they, Harvey?
- 25:50Speaker 5: No.
- 25:52Speaker 6: I had to.
- 25:52Speaker 7: I had to.
- 25:55Speaker 1: Harvey, hello there.
- 25:56Speaker 5: It's Dr.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Saunders.
- 25:58Speaker 9: Here we are.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Thank heavens we found you. Sighted a ship, built a
- 26:01Speaker 3: signal fire. They're waiting for us. Well, what's this?
- 26:07Speaker 2: Well, Victor must have gone crazy in the night and
- 26:10Speaker 2: stabbed himself.
- 26:11Speaker 3: Let me see. He's dead, Harvey. How'd this happen?
- 26:16Speaker 2: I told you. He must have stabbed himself.
- 26:21Speaker 7: No, he didn't.
- 26:22Speaker 6: I stabbed him. It's my knife. I got to thinking.
- 26:27Speaker 6: I did it. I crept over and I stabbed him.
- 26:31Speaker 3: I see. When did you do this, Donna?
- 26:35Speaker 6: It was not more than an hour ago. I couldn't
- 26:38Speaker 6: help it, Doctor. I couldn't help it.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Please don't.
- 26:44Speaker 2: There's nothing to fear.
- 26:45Speaker 6: I didn't want anybody to know. Because of Alice.
- 26:50Speaker 3: They won't know, Donna. You didn't kill him.
- 26:54Speaker 5: What?
- 26:54Speaker 3: He's been dead for at least three hours.
- 26:56Speaker 6: What do you mean?
- 26:57Speaker 3: Look at his eyes. Look at his lips and his tongue.
- 27:00Speaker 3: The swelling of his stomach. Did you test the pool, Harvey?
- 27:05Speaker 2: Yes. Every pool we've come to has been heavy in
- 27:07Speaker 2: mineral content. I warned him, but he thought we were
- 27:10Speaker 2: lying to him. Last night, he pulled a gun and
- 27:12Speaker 2: took Donna's canteen. There wasn't much in it, but it
- 27:16Speaker 2: was all we had.
- 27:17Speaker 3: He's been drinking whiskey, so a little water wouldn't satisfy him.
- 27:21Speaker 3: So he drank from the pool. Poor Victor. I guess
- 27:26Speaker 3: it's just as well. Don't worry, Donna. No one will
- 27:31Speaker 3: ever know. Will they, Doctor? There's nothing to tell. Except
- 27:37Speaker 3: Victor Jackson poisoned himself in a fit of extreme thirst.
- 27:42Speaker 5: The End.
- 27:46Speaker 7: No, Donna. No one will ever know. You did your best.
- 27:50Speaker 10: You tried hard to make things work out. But somehow
- 27:54Speaker 10: fate seemed to take things right out of your hands.
- 28:00Speaker 10: But you know better, don't you, Harvey? You know what happened.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Tell us, Harvey.
- 28:07Speaker 5: Tell us.
- 28:08Speaker 12: After Victor took the canteen from Donna and drank the
- 28:10Speaker 12: few swallows in it, he fell off to sleep. Then
- 28:14Speaker 12: I took the canteen and filled it from the poison pool.
- 28:17Speaker 12: I knew he'd wake up with a greater thirst, and
- 28:19Speaker 12: he did. But I'm not sorry.
- 28:23Speaker 2: He's better off. And I found I do love Donna.
- 28:27Speaker 2: And I'll take care of her for the rest of
- 28:29Speaker 2: her days.
- 28:30Speaker 7: There you are.
- 28:32Speaker 10: From drama to tragedy. From tragedy to a Beautiful love
- 28:36Speaker 10: story wherein they will live happily ever after.
- 28:40Speaker 5: I know.
- 28:41Speaker 7: The End.
