Ep. 219. Who is Jessica Jones from Marvel Comics?! · Vigilante Vibes Podcast

• 0:10
Hello Marvel fans, comic geeks, and all the nerds in between.
• 0:12
My name is Megan with vigilante vibes.
• 0:13
And today I'm here with another character breakdown.
• 0:15
And it is actually not a mutant, but I think it's someone that we
• 0:18
should all be talking about. And with the incoming new season
• 0:23
of Daredevil born again, I think we really need to talk about
• 0:26
her. Today we're it's about Jessica
• 0:28
  Jones. Jessica Jones very first
• 0:30
appearance in Marvel Comics was Amazing Spider man #4 of June of
• 0:34
1963 where she was just a random character which was confirmed in
• 0:38
Amazing Spider man #6 O one that she was just a random character,
• 0:44
but she was indeed Jessica Jones.
• 0:46
But her first full appearance was an alias #1 in September of
• 0:50
2001. She was created by Brian Michael
• 0:52
Bendis, Michael Gaydos, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko.
• 0:58
Jessica Campbell grew up in Forest Hills, Queens and went to
• 1:01
Midtown High with Peter Parker. They had a few classes together
• 1:05
and she absolutely had a crush on him, and she just never
• 1:10
worked up the nerve to say anything.
• 1:12
One day she followed him to the New York Hall of Science,
• 1:15
planning to finally talk to him, but that's when he got bitten by
• 1:19
a radioactive spider that completely changed his life.
• 1:21
We all know the story of Peter Parker.
• 1:24
Jessica trailed after him when he rushed out, lost sight of
• 1:27
him, and almost got hit by an Ajax Atomic Labs truck before
• 1:31
some random guy yanked her out of the way.
• 1:34
Shaken, she bolted. That night at home, she was
• 1:38
trying to fantasize about the Human Torch when her little
• 1:41
brother Philip barged in and completely ruined the mood.
• 1:45
Not long after, her family went to Disney World thanks to free
• 1:48
tickets from her dad's boss, Tony Stark.
• 1:51
On the drive back, Jessica and Philip were arguing when their
• 1:54
car slammed into a military convoy carrying radioactive
• 1:57
  chemicals. Her whole family died.
• 2:00
Jessica survived, but was exposed to the chemicals and
• 2:04
slipped into a coma for months. She woke up around the time the
• 2:08
Fantastic Four faced Galactus when the planet was blasted with
• 2:12
cosmic radiation. Afterward, she was placed in the
• 2:15
Morehouse for wayward children and later adopted by Alyssa
• 2:19
Jones and her husband, taking their last name.
• 2:22
Eventually, she realized the accident left her with super
• 2:25
strength and durability. Back at Midtown High, she was an
• 2:29
outcast, especially with Flash Thompson on her case.
• 2:33
Peter tried to be kind to her since they both lost family and
• 2:36
he can relate, but she misread it as pity and she snapped at
• 2:39
him. In true Jessica Jones form and
• 2:42
in true Peter Parker form. Running off upset, she
• 2:46
discovered she could fly. This is different from the show
• 2:51
where she cannot fly, at least that we know of.
• 2:54
But yeah, in the comics she can fly.
• 2:57
And promptly lost control and crashed into the Hudson River.
• 3:00
Thor ended up rescuing her while testing her powers.
• 3:04
She accidentally crash landed on the Scorpion during a laundromat
• 3:08
robbery, knocking him out long enough for the cops to grab him.
• 3:11
Later, seeing Spider Man fight Sandman in her own classroom
• 3:15
made her realize that she could actually use her abilities to
• 3:18
help people. She tried the superhero thing
• 3:21
under the name Jewel and stayed active for about four years,
• 3:25
though she never got the spotlight other heroes did.
• 3:28
Then everything went sideways when she stumbled into Zebediah
• 3:33
Kilgrave, the Purple man who was played by David Tennant in the
• 3:36
show, making two men fight in a restaurant.
• 3:39
He mind controlled her, ordered her to deal with police, and
• 3:43
eventually kept her prisoner for 8 long months.
• 3:46
He never assaulted her sexually, but he used her as a puppet in
• 3:51
his crimes. At one point, he sent her to
• 3:54
kill Daredevil. Disoriented and barely free of
• 3:57
his pheromone, she attacked the Scarlet Witch by mistake because
• 4:00
of the red costume. She finally broke free, but The
• 4:04
Avengers and Defenders nearly killed her before Jean Grey
• 4:07
helped pull her out of another coma.
• 4:09
After months of recovery, she turned down an offer to join The
• 4:12
Avengers as a SHIELD liaison. Still angry and traumatized, she
• 4:16
briefly went dark as a vigilante called Nitrous, but that lasted
• 4:21
about a week. After a run in with Luke Cage
• 4:24
during a mob bust and seeing the collateral damage up close, she
• 4:28
ditched the mask and started fresh as a private investigator,
• 4:31
founding Alias Investigations. From there, her life got messy
• 4:36
in very human ways. Complicated cases, political
• 4:39
conspiracies, being manipulated into nearly exposing Captain
• 4:43
America's identity, getting attacked by super villains,
• 4:46
navigating relationships, especially with Luke Cage.
• 4:50
She uncovered missing persons, mutant hate crimes, corporate
• 4:54
corruption, and even rescued Spider Woman, which is Maddie
• 4:57
Franklin, from being exploited for mutant growth hormone.
• 5:01
Kilgrave resurfaced more than once, tormenting her again, but
• 5:06
this time she fought back. She beat him down herself.
• 5:09
Around that time, she found out she was pregnant.
• 5:13
After some emotional fallout, including an awkward
• 5:15
misunderstanding with Scott Lang, she told Luke the baby was
• 5:19
his. They decided to keep it and try
• 5:21
  building something real together.
• 5:24
Jessica took a consulting job at the Daily Bugle for a superhero
• 5:27
focus section called the Pulse, but that led to clashes with
• 5:31
Jay, Jonah Jameson and danger from Norman Osborne's Green
• 5:34
  Goblin. She survived.
• 5:36
Baby was cool and safe, and Luke made sure Osborne paid.
• 5:42
Eventually, Jessica and Luke got married.
• 5:44
She kept the name Jones. You have to stay on Brand had
• 5:47
their daughter Danielle and balanced family life with
• 5:49
superhero chaos. She rejoined the hero world as
• 5:52
Jewel again, later going by Power Woman, which is cute
• 5:56
'cause he's Power Man and became part of the New Avengers and
• 6:00
later the Defenders alongside Luke, Daredevil and Iron Fist.
• 6:04
Fun fact, Squirrel Girl was their nanny for Danielle.
• 6:08
So if you didn't know, now you know.
• 6:11
They dealt with Hydra takeovers, crime Lords like Diamondback,
• 6:15
and more purple man drama including him trying to
• 6:17
  manipulate her through her daughter.
• 6:20
Through it all, multiversal double S, Secret wars, SHIELD
• 6:23
conspiracies, and constant trauma, Jessica kept choosing
• 6:28
her family even when killed. Grave tried one last mind game.
• 6:32
Years later, she faced him head on and when he finally died for
• 6:36
good, it felt like she'd closed a darkest chapter of her life.
• 6:41
Since then, she's appeared in Marvel Comics, but not in like a
• 6:44
huge way. She showed up to help Spider
• 6:46
Gwen in Spider Gwen Go Spider by Stephanie Phillips.
• 6:49
That's the last time we saw her. But to celebrate the 25th
• 6:53
anniversary of Jessica Jones, we are getting an Alias red band
• 6:56
sometime soon in the next month. So that is Jessica Jones.
• 7:01
She went from awkward Queens teenager with a crush to
• 7:04
traumatized survivor to reluctant hero Pi avenger wife
• 7:09
and a mother still sarcastic and still stubborn but finally in
• 7:14
control of her own story. So that is Jessica Jones.
• 7:19
She is a fantastic character. Anyone that's watched her show
• 7:23
that was originally made by Netflix, you know she's
• 7:25
fantastic. And I'd say they did a really,
• 7:27
really good job with that show and her back story without, you
• 7:31
know, leaving off the flying. But it's fine.
• 7:34
But yeah, that's Jessica Jones. I am so excited to see her in
• 7:38
Daredevil Born Again Season 2. I am so excited for her incoming
• 7:42
limited series of Alias Red Band.
• 7:44
She is amazing and you should absolutely check her out in the
• 7:47
comics. One I would really recommend
• 7:49
checking out is Alias. I think that does the best job
• 7:52
at showing who she is. It's shows her from the start
• 7:55
and you get to know her from the beginning.
• 7:57
O With that being said, be sure to like and subscribe and have a
• 8:00
  marvelous day.
