- 0:11Hello friends. Sean here.
- 0:14So glad that you could tap on play and let me join you for
- 0:19this few minutes as we go back into God's Word.
- 0:24Back back, back, all the way back into the Old Testament, to
- 0:29the book of Isaiah where we had previously read from chapters 1
- 0:33all the way through to 39 where we heard about God's people,
- 0:37Israel doing the wrong thing, testing God's judgment.
- 0:41And in the end, the only thing left to do after they continued
- 0:45to disobey God was for God to pluck them from their land and
- 0:49dump them in exile so that they would come back to God and be
- 0:55reliant upon him. And as we've gone through these
- 0:58different phases, we have arrived from Chapter 40, and
- 1:02Chapter 40 is where these people have arrived in Babylon.
- 1:07If you remember chapter 39, Hezekiah showed the Babylonian
- 1:11guests everything that they had in their Kingdom, including all
- 1:15of the royal treasures. And God said they are going to
- 1:19have everything that you showed them.
- 1:20And sure enough, history tells us they marched in and took it
- 1:24all for themselves. And so now the tone shifts
- 1:28dramatically. And now instead of being
- 1:29judgement, God gives comfort to His people who are now homeless
- 1:36in a very foreign, distant land, lamenting what has happened.
- 1:42And so today we will hear God's response of comfort to His
- 1:45people as we read together. Isaiah chapter 40.
- 2:01Comfort, comfort, my people, says your God, Speak tenderly to
- 2:07Jerusalem. Tell her that her sad days are
- 2:11gone and her sins are pardoned. Yes, the Lord has punished her
- 2:16twice over for all her sins. Listen, it's the voice of
- 2:21someone shouting. Clear the way through the
- 2:24wilderness for the Lord. Make a straight highway through
- 2:28the wasteland for our God. Fill in the valleys and level
- 2:32the mountains and hills. Straighten the curves and smooth
- 2:36out the rough places. Then the glory of the Lord will
- 2:40be revealed and all people will see it together.
- 2:43The Lord has spoken. A voice said.
- 2:48Shout. I asked What should I shout?
- 2:52Shout that the people are like the grass.
- 2:56Their beauty fades as quickly as the flowers in a field.
- 3:00The grass Withers, and the flowers fade beneath the breath
- 3:03of the Lord. And so it is with people.
- 3:06The grass Withers and the flowers fade, but the word of
- 3:10our God stands forever. Oh Zion, messenger of good news,
- 3:17shout from the mountain tops, shout at louder.
- 3:20O Jerusalem, shout, and do not be afraid.
- 3:24Tell the towns of Judah your God is coming.
- 3:28Yes, the sovereign Lord is coming in power.
- 3:31He will rule with a powerful arm.
- 3:35See, He brings his reward with him as he comes.
- 3:39He will feed his flock like a shepherd.
- 3:42He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his
- 3:46heart. He will gently lead the mother
- 3:49sheep with their young. Who else has held the oceans in
- 3:53his hand? Who was measured off the heavens
- 3:56with his fingers? Who else knows the weight of the
- 4:00earth or his way, the mountains and hills on a scale?
- 4:05Who is able to advise the Spirit of the Lord?
- 4:08Who knows enough to give him advice or teach him?
- 4:12Has the Lord ever needed anyone's advice?
- 4:15Does he need instruction about what is good?
- 4:18Did someone teach him what is right or show him the path of
- 4:21justice? No, for all the nations of the
- 4:26world are but a drop in a bucket.
- 4:29They are nothing more than dust on the scales.
- 4:33He picks up the whole earth as though it were a grain of sand.
- 4:40All the wood in Lebanon's forests and all Lebanon's
- 4:44animals would not be enough to make a burnt offering worthy of
- 4:47our God. The nations of the world are
- 4:51worth nothing to him. In his eyes they count for less
- 4:55than nothing, mere emptiness and froth.
- 4:59To whom can you compare God? What image can you find to
- 5:02resemble him? Can he be compared to an idol
- 5:06formed in a mold, overlaid with gold and decorated with silver
- 5:09chains? Or if people are too poor for
- 5:13that, they might at least choose wood that won't decay and a
- 5:17skilled Craftsman to carve an image that won't fall down.
- 5:21Haven't you heard? Don't you understand?
- 5:24Are you deaf to the words of God?
- 5:27The words He gave before the world began?
- 5:31Are you so ignorant? God sits above the circle of the
- 5:36earth. The people below seem like
- 5:39grasshoppers to him. He spreads out the heavens like
- 5:43a curtain and makes his tent. From them he judges the great
- 5:48people of the world and brings them all to nothing.
- 5:52They hardly get started, barely taking root.
- 5:55When he blows on them and they wither, the wind carries them
- 6:00off like chaff. To whom will you compare me, who
- 6:04is my equal? Asks the Holy One Look up into
- 6:09the heavens, who created all the stars?
- 6:12He brings them out like an army, one after another, calling each
- 6:17by its name. Because of his great power and
- 6:22incomparable strength, not a single one is missing.
- 6:27Oh, Jacob, how can you say the Lord does not see your troubles?
- 6:32Oh, Israel, how can you say God ignores your rights?
- 6:36Have you never heard? Have you never understood?
- 6:40The Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of all the earth.
- 6:46He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of
- 6:50his understanding. He gives power to the weak and
- 6:55strength to the powerless. Even youths will become weak and
- 6:59tired, and young men will fall in exhaustion.
- 7:03But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
- 7:08They will soar high on wings like Eagles.
- 7:12They will run and not grow weary.
- 7:15They will walk and not faint. Our mighty Father, you are a
- 7:30very big God. So much bigger than our little
- 7:35human minds can fathom. You are the mighty Creator, and
- 7:41we just worship before you. And what we love about you is
- 7:49you don't just flex your biceps in your power, but you use your
- 7:55power to uphold the weak and give your strength to the
- 7:59powerless. So when we feel utterly spent
- 8:06and powerless, let us lean into you, our mighty Creator God that
- 8:14you would be our strength. Because even young men and women
- 8:19become weak and tired that our trust in you will bring us
- 8:24strength. Help us be entirely dependent on
- 8:30you and not our own pitiful resources.
- 8:37Thank you, God, for your love and your graciousness and your
- 8:40might. We just fall in worship of You,
- 8:46our wonderful mighty God. We pray all these things in the
- 8:52name of Jesus. Amen.
